Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack

Mudbugs Are Back! By Rhonda Meredith For more than six years, those crazy Cajun cousins Boudreaux and Thibodeaux at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack have been offering mouth-watering dishes fresh from the swamp. Order in from their extensive menu and stay awhile; or enjoy the convenience of their new drivethrough and pick-up window.

We Are Family!

The Swamp Shack, as it’s affectionately known, is located at 310 Texas Avenue at the base of the Kemah Bridge. The familyfriendly restaurant has a laid back and casual atmosphere and a vibe is festive and fun. Anywhere is a good seat in the house and there is even a rooftop deck with a killer view. The mudbugs are back! Channel your inner Cajun and savor the delectable flavors of the hot, fresh, and delicious mudbugs (crawfish) seasoned just right in a boiling Cajun bath served up with corn and potatoes. It’s “yum-mee” along with a cold beverage. Go “getcha” some!

Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack is a family-oriented establishment for sure, but they are a family behind the scenes as well. “Our staff members are family,” said owners Paul Latour and Alan Franks. And not because it seems like all Cajuns are related! They would like to recognize individual employees who have been with them in the Clear Lake service industry with them for quite awhile:

Crazy Alan’s boiling pot also “runneths” over with shrimp, lobsters, and swamp spiders. (The latter is “crabs” for you nonCajuns.)

· Lori Holzie, currently a Crazy Alan’s (Kemah) manager, has been working with Franks since 1996.

Or opt for a “Swamp Snack” at the Swamp Shack and taste some of Crazy Alan’s favorite starters such as the “Swamp Shack Sampler.” The “Smoked Oyster Swamp Shack” is a favorite among customers too. It’s hard to resist these flavors: smoked Parmesan, smoked Ponchatrain, smoked mango salsa, smoked Mexican jalapeño, and smoked pico.

· Jennifer Boehm, currently a Crazy Alan’s (Kemah) manager, has been working with Franks since 1997. · Guiermo Miranda, an operating partner at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack I-10 location, has been working with Franks since 1999.

Anytime is the right time for a bowl of gumbo, Crab Corn bisque, or Homemade Swamp chili. The Louisiana Swamp gumbo comes in either sausage and chicken, or shrimp and crab. Both are filled with swamp veggies and secret spices in a dark brown roux. - Continued on Page 35

· Bob Deering, Crazy Alan’s (Kemah) employee, has been with working with Franks since 2005 Even Latour and Franks have been business-related since the mid-1980s! Being thankful for longtime employees goes handin-hand with loyal customers as well.

Featured Culinary Artist: Paul Metha Thai Spice Rice-Noodle House 300 W. Bay Area Blvd. #900 • 281-554-6800 Background: I had been working in Japanese restaurants for years, watching chefs making sushi caught my interest. So I taught myself. With help from friends in the same industry, it has brought me to today. My specialty: Combining ingredients and setting display. Signature dishes: The Stonehenge. It's a combination of fish cream cheese and pepper rolled together and fried in tempura batter, cut and carefully displayed in four vertical pieces. So it's crispy, yet soft and creamy. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous? Famous? I could think of a good friend of mine Leon Cubillas, Former Superintendent of Splendora ISD, Chairman of East Montgomery County Improvement District. Non-famous: how about Ta Jedsi, partnership of Red Curry Thai & Sushi Bar in Kingwood. She is also a partner in my life. Cooking Tip: I always wear gloves when making sushi, so I use sesame oil to make the rice not stick to my gloves and also put a drop on the cutting board to help, too.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Space Center Houston photo

Houston’s Top International Draw Launches World’s Top SPACE SHUTTLE Exhibit A spectacular grand opening celebration marked the unveiling of Space Center Houston’s newest exhibit, complete with fireworks, astronauts and an incredible interactive experience inside the one-of-a-kind exhibit, Independence Plaza presented by Boeing. “It was an unforgettable day for the world and our center,” said Richard E. Allen Jr., president and CEO of the educationally focused nonprofit museum, Space Center Houston. “Visitors celebrated the historic day and the launch of the world-class exhibit symbolizing one of America’s greatest accomplishments in space exploration.” Years in the making, the extraordinary day themed “Mission Accomplished” welcomed visitors from all over the world to be a part of the historic opening. For the first time, the nonprofit opened the eight-story-tall multiple-exhibit complex, featuring the first shuttle carrier aircraft NASA 905 and the high-fidelity shuttle replica Independence. Space Center Houston Exhibits Manager PAUL SPANA (left) and retired NASA 905 pilot FRANK MARLOW address the media days before the display’s grand opening.

Set around the magnificent new exhibit complex, the day kicked off with an exciting opening ceremony and a T-10 countdown to celebrate the monumental day. Visitors heard from NASA Johnson Space Center Director and astronaut Dr. Ellen Ochoa, who was integral in obtaining the extraordinary vehicles featured in the international landmark. - Continued on Next Page

INDEPENDENCE PLAZA GETS A MISSION PATCH Every human mission NASA has flown since Gemini V has its own patch, created by the astronauts venturing into space. The newest international landmark, Independence Plaza, has its own unique mission patch and logo. The design reflects the remarkable ingenuity and achievement of the Space Shuttle Program and the innovators who conceived of the plan to ferry shuttles on the back of a 747. The logo has a patriotic flair, with a flag behind NASA 905 and the shuttle replica Independence. On that flag are five grouped stars to denote the orbiters that flew into space and one single star to represent Enterprise, the orbiter that proved our Boeing 747 could carry a shuttle.

Independence Plaza Grand Opening • Cont. Laura Husband, daughter of the late astronaut Col. Rick Husband, sang the National Anthem while RE/MAX skydivers landed at the event and the U.S. Coast Guard Ceremonial Honor Guard presented the colors. Space Center Houston President and CEO Richard Allen told the crowd about the ambitious project and why bringing such a grand exhibit to life was important to the nonprofit. U.S. Rep. Brian Babin joined the ceremony and presented Space Center Houston with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol Building. John Elbon, vice president and general manager of Boeing Space Exploration, discussed the importance of Independence Plaza and the significance of the shuttle carrier aircraft program to the Space Shuttle Program. The excitement filled the air when visi- Space Center Houston Presitors took their first steps dent and CEO Richard Allen inside the exhibit complex and entered both the shuttle carrier aircraft NASA 905 and the high-fidelity shuttle replica Independence. The action continued throughout the day with activities for the whole family. Visitors watched a space adventure during a special viewing of the new animated movie “Capture the Flag;” participated in interactive PopUp Science Labs; and had fun with hands-on space-related educational activities. People of all generations enjoyed a special opportunity to have Lunch with an Astronaut and meet space veterans Jerry Ross and Ken Cameron. Visitors took home the ultimate souvenir during astronaut autograph signings with Anne McClain, Ken Cameron and Jerry Ross, who also signed copies of his book “Spacewalker: My Journey in Space and Faith as NASA Record-Setting Frequent Flyer.” During three panel discussions, visitors gathered to hear about the rich history of the shuttle program and the exciting future of aerospace from the pioneers of human space exploration. Among the panelists were astronauts Jerry Ross, Dr. Jan Davis and Ken Cameron; shuttle carrier aircraft pilot Frank Marlow; Tony Antonelli, Lockheed Martin; Mark Mulqueen, Boeing; astronaut Brian Duffy, Orbital ATK; Chris Sanders, Aerojet Rocketdyne; George Nield, Federal Aviation Administration; Peter McGrath, Boeing; Jeff Siders, OrbitalATK; and Benji Reed, SpaceX. - Continued on Page 29

HOUSTON SYMPHONY LEAGUE BAY AREA’S 15th ANNUAL HOME TOUR • MARCH 4-6 By Domino Taylor There are several signs of spring coming, in nature and in the arts, and the long tradition of the symphony fundraiser of the Bay Area Home Tour is number one. The Houston Symphony League Bay Area’s Home Tour is March 4 through 6, and this year it offers diversity in style, era of design, and décor from a home that looks like a cottage with a footbridge to one that has 6,000 square feet. Two of the homes are in the Historic District of League City, two are in Nassau Bay, and one is in El Lago/Seabrook. Like many homes in the League City Historic District, this original home was constructed in 1908 from cypress lumber salvaged from the Great Hurricane of 1900 in Galveston. The owners have made significant improvements including enlarging the home, but have stayed true to the period with colors, style and décor. Unable to purchase moldings and frames representative of the period, the owner milled them in his shop. The décor was created by the owner, a master craftsman, who was inspired by beautiful pieces in historic Galveston homes. Even the landscaping – which includes a foot bridge and gazebo – is true to the period. A hidden treasure of the Bay Area, West Bay Common School Children’s Museum features a one-room schoolhouse on property originally home to the first school in League City. While the building is not original to League City, it is an original Texas one-room school lovingly moved to League City. Desks, chalkboard, stove and teacher’s desk are faithful to the period. Guests are able to “be” one of the students. Once serving as the garage for the one and only school bus in League City, the museum is a treasure trove of articles typical of the period of the school and even boasts a workable player piano.

You’ve Changed Your Diet. You’ve Changed Your Lifestyle.

The residence in El Lago boasts a superb view of Taylor Lake and an Olympic-sized pool. The home is furnished with a combination of modern and vintage pieces and an incredible art collection. The first floor includes a recognized water colorist studio resplendent with exceptional works, also art works are on display throughout the other two stories. The personality of the owner is apparent in the humor and character of the pieces in the home.

But Have You Changed Your WATER? Preserve your Body & the Environment with

Alkaline, Ionized, Microclustered Water

In Nassau Bay, there are many homes that are being lifted due to the damages suffered from Ike, but there are two distinctive ones that are on the tour this year. In the time of Hansel and Gretel, Old English and Danish Modern, the architecture of this home was most unique and ahead of its time. The architect, Clovis B. Heimsath, and design were featured in the 1966 Architectural Record of Houses, a rhythmical design centers on an open-plan great hall for the living areas, surrounded by closed, private rooms at each of the four corners of the house. The original owners were Captain and Mrs. Charlie Bassett. Captain Bassett was in the third group of astronauts chosen by NASA in 1963 for the Gemini and Apollo missions. While updated, the original design has stood the test of time and the house remains true to its original design providing variety and spaciousness. The original architect and his architect son plan to be at the home during the tour. - Continued on Page 21

STARR STRUC K

SC

Featured Artist: Debi Starr

By Kelley Dawson

Women, wine, and abstracts are the favorite subjects of local artist Debi Starr. The three subjects dominate her striking collection. Many of her paintings are brilliantly colored and all emanate deep expression and daring style. The artist revealed her brighter, bolder pieces are her interpretation of pop art color and style. She told, “I like to put my own twist on things.” According to Starr, she is “continuing to creatively engage and cheer up the world.” Starr said she has created art her whole life. She first studied at Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Starr then attended the Art Institute of Chicago and Houston Baptist University. She holds a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts and an Art Education Teaching Certificate. While teaching art in the Fort Bend school district, Starr employed her mural and faux painting skills when they became extremely popular art forms. She said commissions kept her very busy. Starr also taught art privately and has been teaching both kids and adults for more than 30 years. Many of those years, Starr shared that she worked out of her garage and never advertised; though, her classes remained full. Currently, Starr runs her first store front, StarrStruck Gallery and Studio. “It’s a dream come true. It’s totally incredible to have a place to create and show and teach,” she said. Starr stated she aspires to operate a gallery that has a “more relaxed atmosphere and feels comfortable.” She added, “I want to provide an art gallery that feels approachable and interactive; encouraging people to enter and to ask questions.” Along those same ideals, Starr believes her teaching methods garner the same comfort level. She said, “I help master your way, not my way.” She described her way of teaching as more “fostering.” In fact, Starr informed she has taught some of her students since the age of 5 to the present. - Continued on Page 21

Symphony League Home Tour Continued From Page 18

A premier property in Nassau Bay with an uninterrupted view of Clear Lake, the home was originally constructed in l977, and then extensively remodeled by the second owners during the mid-1980s and 1990s. With large rooms and an open floor plan downstairs, guests consider the house “cozy in a big sort of way.” Two wet bars, a backyard barbecue, an ample game room, and a large deck result in the current owners to call it the Party Palace. Entertaining includes annual parties for holidays, football games, and a salmon barbecue, special events have ranged from parties for spacecraft engineering colleagues to a wedding for 80 guests. For the Home Tour, rooms in the house will feature decorations for various regular annual parties. The first two owners spared no expense and incorporated every feature from sweeping staircase to gourmet kitchen in the front of the house, so the cook can view the water, and a master suite featured in a book on architectural lighting. The current owners restored the first floor and added a few improvements after extensive storm surge damage from Hurricane Ike. The home includes over 6,000 square feet of space plus the large deck. The tour times are noon to 5 p.m. on March 5 and 6. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the doors of homes. A pre-tour party will be held on Friday, March 4 with tickets $75 a person and includes a tickets to all five homes. Purchase tickets at Arlan’s (4614 NASA Parkway), Cassanova’s (4630 NASA Parkway), Adelaide’s (14870 Space Center) or Unexpected Interiors (613 E. Main Street). Featured Artist: DEBI STARR Continued From Page 19 As for Starr’s preferred choice of medium, she declared, “Everything!” She did admit her biggest passion is paint. Starr also disclosed her love of experimenting with essence and sheen of resins and precious metals. She explained the resin coating process to obtain a glass-like finish is difficult. “With conditions just perfect, the resin must be mixed exactly right, or it will ruin the painting,” she said. One of Starr’s most recent series incorporates mixed media of textured layers of silver, copper, and gold leaf on wood panels with paint, ink, and charcoal. For Starr, drawing is a strength and good foundation in her works. She disclosed her precious metals series required a lot of drawing, painting, and scraping in order to create “lost edges or integrated design” leaving the audience wondering, “Where does it start and stop.” Starr acknowledged she

Painting changes and evolves as I do, which is a huge positive in being an artist, or I would get bored,” she said. Starr’s works are not only on display at her studio. Starr has three Seabrook pelicans around town at Bayside Little League, Lake Point Forest and Clear Falls High School. The opti class victory came in a tight final round against the Lauderdale team who went undefeated through the qualifying rounds. The Midwinters Championship is open to kids under the age of 15 who sail in the optimist dinghy class. A one-person vessel for beginner sailors, the opti remains the boat of choice for youth racers who want to broaden their racing skills and expand their competitive edge. Byerly, who's been sailing optis since the age of eight, trains every weekend with Lakewood's coaches and attends the club's Opti Camp in the summer. Sticking to a rigorous training regimen has paid off for Byerly. "At first, I didn't like the water that much. But it didn't take very long for me to really start liking it."

Bay Cup I is the first in a series with Bay Cup II taking place on August 6th. Overall trophies will be presented for the two-race series at the conclusion of Bay Cup II. Both are open to the public with a $75 registration fee each. This includes the Skipper’s Meeting on Fri., Mar. 4th, 7:30 pm in Lakewood’s ballroom, along with one meal and two drink tickets for the Sat. night party, which includes the awards ceremony and amazing live music from Kelly McGuire. Kelly McGuire is an award-winning singer/songwriter that will make you smile, cry, tap your toes, kiss your guitar and have a blast.

The 3-day race was followed by an outdoor awards ceremony where each team member received an engraved trophy. Byerly couldn't wait to add his new team sailing award to all the mounting basketball trophies in his room. "This was the first big win for our team. We've been trying for a win for three years now. And we finally won!"

Racers can register now online at lakewoodyachtclub.com before the Wednesday, March 2nd deadline. Don’t miss out! Classes include PHRF Spinnaker, PHRF Non-Spin, Cruising Poleless Spin, Cruising Non-Spin-Classic Canvas (i.e. Dacron sails), Shorthanded Offshore Sailors (SOS), Multihull and One Design Classes.

Hidden Jewels on the Island:

MOD Coffeehouse By Lizzy Parker

MOD Coffeehouse, located at 2126 Post Office Street in downtown Galveston, is hidden in plain sight. The name “MOD” comes from the local company aspiring to incorporate something “modern, yet full of charm and warm hospitality” to the more historic area of Galveston. Upon approaching the community coffeehouse, you’ll see a beautiful pergola full of lush greenery and string lights lining the outdoor patio area. Walking into MOD Coffeehouse feels like coming home.

handshake agreed to partner with the now owner, Holly. The amazing story of how MOD came together after the storm is one you truly need to hear Holly tell herself. More than 20 people (customers of MOD prior to the storm), came together on a Saturday afternoon to hand make the decoupage tables seen in MOD today. Many of the other tables were made from reclaimed floorboards of homes that were damaged in the hurricane.

With such a warm and inviting atmosphere, any Galveston native or tourist alike will feel like they belong. One of the first things you’ll notice inside are the large chalkboard menus that were hand painted by local artist, Elizabeth Punches, hanging behind the counter listing the multitude of caffeinated options for your choosing. MOD’s coffee comes straight from Katz Coffee in Houston and is roasted, delivered and served in less than 24 hours. Katz even helped MOD create the very popular MOD House Blend, which is served daily. Go with a classic Latte, Cappuccino, Americano or feel free to venture into the many Specialty Latte options MOD has available such as the “Almond Joy” (mocha, coconut & amaretto), the “Holly” (toffee nut, vanilla & cinnamon sugar), or if you’re feeling adventurous, try the “Just Trust Me” (it really is a secret). Pairing with the amazing coffee, espresso and teas, MOD’s baked goods are all handmade in house. Try the creative carrot cake cookies or the yummy banana nut bread!

Along with the customer-made furniture which customers tend to move all around the establishment, patrons frequently gift gnomes to MOD and you can see them throughout the coffeehouse. MOD’s prized gift is a Tree of Life mosaic in two pieces. One panel was made by survivors of Hurricane Ike, the other by first responders who aided the Galveston community in distress. The amazing piece was hand crafted by hundreds of people and is a breath-taking sight to see.

Holly Hopkins is the owner of this Galveston go-to coffee stop, but she prefers to call herself the “Steward” of MOD, which means she’s much more than a just a boss. Holly feels she has a responsibility to “take care of what’s been entrusted to her” – the very dedicated employees who have been working with her as part of the MOD family for many years. You won’t see any turnover at MOD, so expect to see the same smiling faces if you frequent the place.

Holly and her husband, Mark, are dedicated to the values and traditions the Browns envisioned for MOD in the beginning and the theme of good business, community and the genuine sense of MOD and its family helping its customers and employees have the very best day possible still rings true to this day. MOD is a refuge for all members of the community. Holly Hopkins says, “You can’t own what has a heartbeat.” MOD Coffeehouse belongs to all of us. If you’re looking for a hometown or home away from home spot where everybody knows your name and your drink order, look no further than MOD Coffeehouse.

Sadly, during Hurricane Ike, MOD was severely damaged with more than 8 feet of water. After the storm, the former owners, the Brown family, on Christmas Eve and with only a

Voters on Galveston.com recently pronounced MOD Coffeehouse as “Best Small Business” for the second year and the Galveston Daily News listed MOD as #21 of the 101 Things to Love about Galveston going on to say MOD is the “heartbeat of the community.” This sense of community is deeply felt by the devoted MOD coffee drinkers on the island.

INDEPENDENCE PLAZA: from pg 17 Unlike anything else in the world, Independence Plaza immerses visitors in the science and history of the shuttle era with hands-on exhibit displays inside an unprecedented interactive experience. It honors those who designed, built and flew in America’s Space Shuttle Program by recounting stories from astronauts, engineers and pilots. Visitors learn about the key role NASA Johnson Space Center played in the shuttle’s development and see firsthand the future of space exploration through the interactive multi-media educational displays. To visit Independence Plaza, visitors who have purchased an admission ticket can reserve a free timed ticket to view the smaller shuttle, enter the larger plane via a firstcome, first-served line or walk around the plaza without waiting in lines. Houston once again steps into the limelight as host of the Advocare Texas Bowl at the end of December 2016. The matchup pits the SEC and Big 12 conference champions against one another for an epic title match. SUPER BOWL LI: The biggest game in sports returns to Houston’s NRG Stadium February 5, 2017. Preparations are already under way to provide visitors and Houstonians with an exciting week of activities and public events leading up to Super Bowl LI. The Super Bowl is the most watched television program in the United States annually with over 100 million viewers on average. The game also attracts

large audiences worldwide. This is the third Super Bowl for Houston. The city last hosted the big game at NRG Stadium in 2004. The hub for many Super Bowl activities will be Discovery Green, the 12-acre downtown park that fronts the George R. Brown Convention Center. The city of Houston as well as many local businesses and nonprofits are busy adding new hotels, infrastructure, and renovations to ensure the city looks its best for a year in the spotlight. Both of Houston’s international airports have undergone extensive renovations and terminal additions to accommodate area growth and the expected influx of travel to Houston in 2016 and 2017. By the time the big game rolls around, Houston will have added 8 new hotels with nearly 3,000 rooms in addition to the over 5,000 rooms already available. The 20-block Houston Convention District adds to the list with major renovations completely redesigning the face of downtown. The project will be completed in time to host the Super Bowl fan festival at the George R. Brown Convention Center in February 2017.

Beer Ambassador: Conti. From Page 55 Other than current profession, what position/profession would you like to attempt? I think almost everyone from age 2 to 92 wants to drive a race car. or race boat. or race motorcycle. Who inspires you? Frederick Dame, the first american to pass the master sommelier exam. He is still one of the leading American somms in the industry. How long have you been working for Dickinson BBQ, Steakhouse, and Bar 36? I started in 2013 after being suddenly unemployed from a small bistro on the seawall in Galveston. We offer; slow smoked brisket, ribs, and chicken, handcut ribeyes and strips, cold locally brewed craft beer, unbeatable revolutionary texas memorabilia, and a service oriented atmosphere.

CABO Monday Night: Continued From Page 49 The tradition of Open Mic Mondays at Cabo started with the band Mama Tried. The rambunctious group radiated their positivity to Cabo patrons. That same sense of family can still be felt. Open Mic encourages building lasting relationships with musical peers and is a safe space for musicians to express themselves. Hardy accommodates performers and offers full-service support, including lending a guitar or drum set, helping to get backing tracks ready or adjusting sound while performers play. Participants can message Hardy on Facebook prior to the event to work out accommodations or ask questions, so performers can feel ready for their big night! Attendees are allowed one to four songs (subject to availability). Cabo and Hardy will support artists at any degree and no two nights will ever be the same. All types of acts including singer/songwriters, hiphop artists, country stars, rock gods and even spoken word poetry, comedy acts and magicians have been known to grace Cabo’s stage. Cabo loves originals, but covers are welcome also. Set up begins around 8 p.m. and the music will keep going as late as 1 a.m. The sign-up sheet is out around 8:30 p.m., but arrive any time to get on the list (subject to availability). Another factor that makes Cabo more enticing is that the audio runs through Cabo’s house sound, and all performers can be heard in every area of the venue – including outside. The next open mic is March 7. If dancing away your Monday work blues isn’t enough of an incentive to check out Cabo, their stellar Monday Night Takeover specials are certain to seal the deal. Enjoy $2.25 drafts and wells, 50¢ wings and $4 Jack Daniel’s and Tito’s Vodka drinks every Monday night. While weekends at Cabo bring the party, Tuesdays and Wednesdays have more of that hometown, neighborhood bar feel to them. Taco Tuesdays where $2 tacos are featured, is a big hit as well as Geeks Who Drink from 8 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays. After trivia ends, stay for Gamer Night from 10 p.m. to close. Shut Wednesday nights down with Gamer Night Host, Carlos TheRev, playing old school gaming consoles like Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis with your friends. At Cabo, there is something for everyone. So, hit the dance floor to shake it out to the SBMT mix or to decompress after a long work day, lounge on the upstairs patio with a water view and the night sky, have a friends night out with a Monday night wing party, or enjoying some acoustic vibes during the first Monday open mic night. Whatever it is you choose to do, you’re sure to end your day on a high note.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 39 It was interesting catching Shooter who is touring these days with Waylon’s original band. These seasoned musicians came from the Willie Nelson-era where musician makes sincere, honest eye contact with everybody in the audience throughout the night

Saturate @ Scout Bar Objective evidence is abundant that Saturate is one of the local area’s hardest-working, creative, high-energy bands. Opening the wrap to their new 12-song album, it’s clear these guys have their sights on the next level. First thing that grabs you unwrapping this album is the care and attention to good, old-fashioned album artwork, the kind you would see on a Moody Blues album and could ponder at for hours on end. I listened to the album six times while writing this month’s column, and it took a while to realize that this is actually two albums, with the first six songs best played in large arena settings to facilitate spatial the separation needed for all of the sound squeezed between 100 to 4,000Hz. For me, this is a hint that playing in huge arenas and festivals could very well be in there upcoming horizon. Now, here is where I believe the Separation Effect takes place as the entire second half of the album undergoes a clear transformation in mixing levels and mastering bringing out detailed instrumentals, the sound dynamics and crystalline clarity well suited set to videos watching on your phone screen. As for the meaning of the songs, we’ll leave that freedom for the listener to choose. All the music was written by J. Miller and given the content, syncopation and dynamic complexity, the arrangement structure, the ability of Saturate to pull this off musically sets the stage for a run at album of the year.

Flaw @ Scout Bar - Something not all musicians do these days.

Flaw @ Scout Bar

Flaw was a band I was curious to see. With original members Jason Daunt and Chris Volz (guitar and vox) and long time member Ryan Jurhe on bass, the only new guy in the band was Chris Ballinger on drums. Pretty close to all original and hailing from Kentucky. I left the show reckoning them more of a band with a powerful southern rock foundation (ie. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker & Charlie Daniels) for their venture into Nu & Alternative Metal, aka Gusto... Opening for Flaw that evening was Saturate. Pretty cool for our local team, eh? The big rumors are the band will be headSaturate @ Scout Bar ing out on the national touring scene again this year, and, as we all know, there’s nothing to it once you get the hang of it, which Saturate no doubt is farther along than many of their peers. Asking each of the members what’s up, each one of them said, “The new album!!”

IT’S A WRAP - Let’s see, the groundhog forecasts the cold weather wrapping up. Reports are that crawfish are large in size for this time of year. Catching up with you out there, several shared their appreciation for the cheaper oil as their lower fuel bills has allowed them to step out a bit more often – a good thing. Since Snow Bird Season is officially upon us, when your friends from up north come in this month for a visit, don’t be a grump reminding them they could be up north shoveling snow, but be cool and take them out and about on the SCENE. Yes, it’s a political election year this year. My suggestion is avoid bickering nonsense and go take in some good live music ahead, and as Dr. K. Fenton suggests, make these the good days. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to live to see another year. Don’t forget Valentine’s Day! Cheers!

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE night we were there, we met local artist Ricky Ortiz - One whom I’m betting on whose work you’ll be seeing some day in the movies. More on the arts later… But perhaps the biggest surprise I discovered chatting with the team was all their work they’ve done for good causes including the likes of Saving Pets Lives, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, local people in need and the local VIPs (kids). Folks, I’m on board with what these people are all about and sure many of you would, too. So here’s the scoop… Check out punkstarradio.com, and if you’ve a couple hours free on Wednesday, come on and hang out in the studio audience at Scout Bar where you can enjoy drink specials, order pizza from Dan’s, watch the interviews as they happen, listen to local bands present their good stuff to the world. Be a part & more to come...

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 42 The timing was perfect with A.D. Rowntree moving on essentially ending The Buzz regular Sunday night show at Scout Bar. After a few starts around the area, Punkstar Full Throttle Radio landed the Scout Bar Wednesday evening slot and has since grown the program which includes a regular following from around the world. If that’s not enough, they recently announced an alliance with Reach Down Radio effectively bridging the north & south Houston audiences. And if that’s not enough, Punkstar Radio has expanded the musical genre from metal, rock, industrial, into instrumental, acoustic, progressive/aggressive country and others with the performing bands providing an intensity as if they were auditioning for slots in the Scout Bar lineups (which they are) all of which assures an enjoyable variety in a comfortable studio audience setting. (Message to the bands: If you’re interested in playing at Scout Bar and opening for a national act, your path these days will likely include a stop at the Punkstar Radio show. Be sure and bring your crowd.)

TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE - Caught two great shows during January the first was Shooter Jennings (son of the famed outlaw, Waylon Jennings), and a second show headlined by Flaw with local band, Saturate from Baytown opening. First blush questions the rationale Shooter Jennings @ Scout Bar

These folks are not just about the local music but also inclusive of the arts. The

of bringing in Shooter to Scout Bar. Second blush realizes the genius of such a booking considering we’re lined up to see Kid Rock at the Rodeo this year anyway. Genius move was proven with a full house Scout Bar, full honky tonking, twostepping, southern swing dancing patrons. Amazing! - Continued on Page 38 Punkstar Full Throttle @ Scout Bar

DIRECTOR WOLF: Continued From Page 56 This Clear Lake band started off as experimental pop-punk – and still has a very high-energy vibe – but has also morphed over the years into more of a garage/indie sound, especially after the addition of Angel. Their originals are laced with lyrics about heartbreak, passion and past experiences. It has been said that Director Wolf has a similar sound to The Front Bottoms and Tiger’s Jaw – Director Wolf claims both bands as a source of inspiration. Other influences range from projects like Title Fight, Tame Impala, and Modern Baseball to Classic Rock bands like The Ramones, Queen and AC/DC, and even artists like Blink 182, Enter Shikari, Foo Fighters and Say Anything. As the boys have grown and changed, so has their music. Director Wolf’s writing style has evolved and matured and after witnessing their live set, these guys have found a groove that suits them well individually and as a band. Like any group of people working closely together, Director Wolf has had their share ups and downs but when it comes down to it, these boys are a wolf pack who is there for each other through thick and thin. Jacob is said to be very artistic and more of a free spirit who doesn’t submit to societal norms. Angel is outspoken and more serious. Angel is in charge of many of the logistical responsibilities of the band and keeps everyone in check with ongoing constructive criticism. Christian, too, is serious and “left brained” using his math skills frequently while writing. What each member brings to the band combines in perfect balance to make Director Wolf unique, fun and always energetic.

THE SCENE

Christian started playing drums when he was 5 years old. Jacob began to culture a love for music at a young age and started playing guitar seriously at age 13. Angel picked up the saxophone when he was 12 but then began playing guitar and bass thereafter. Angel now books for Scout Bar, is a promoter, producer, and the owner of Red Raptor Productions. He is also in the hardcore band, Blood Between Us. (Catch their appearance at Scout Bar with ATREYU on March 11.) These three genuine and passionate guys consider themselves band mates and friends, supporting each other in their individual musical and personal pursuits and projects. While working on their current EP – which is projected to be out this spring – Jacob, Christian and Angel have learned what writing and recording style works best for them. The six-track EP self-titled “Director Wolf” is being produced by Angel. The guys tend to use improv as well as structured writing styles where one member presents an idea to the others, and they make their additions to what’s been presented. Director Wolf also uses a very interesting writing style called “live improv” where the band takes a structured song, then changes specific parts to experiment with different sounds while playing live. Even after you’ve seen Director Wolf several times, some songs will sound new and different. So, devoted Director Wolf fans will hear their favorites but also be kept guessing every time they go see a live set. The band is taking some time off from playing live to focus on finishing their EP. Keep track of where they play next at www.facebook.com/Directorwolf. Stay tuned while we await their EP debut!

Seems like an entire house of merry mongers at the Cockeyed Seagull thought so, too, thus proving great ears enjoy flocking together... This would’ve been a show my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, would have enjoyed. I know I would. masterful tapestry – how amazing it was that it all came together…” And such is how I would describe what’s been happening at the Punkstar Full Throttle Radio show. With an original dream of becoming a provider of cool rock & roll apparel to the populous and faced with the gaps between suitable events to sell such merchandise, these clever cats simply invented their own events by creating a weekly internet radio talk show complete with interviews, video and live music streaming. Go figure!

KATIE’S HOUSE I’m sure many have seen where musicians would venture to Daryl Hall’s Hawaiian sound barn for a musical get together. Here in Bacliff, we have Katie’s – that’s not a barn, but a converted blast-proof post office building turned into a local music appreciation room for patrons. This month, we caught Ricky Jackson fresh off his Lake Charles hiatus and Houston’s Juan Aiber on drums with Bob Emmons holding down the fort on bass. Perhaps missing was the hula attire, but musically, this place works if you’re needing your dose of R&B to get you by and with live music throughout the week, help’s not far away. A quick drive down to Bacliff at Katie’s.

Besides locals, the bands see the moved-up curtain as a positive. Barry even made sure the bands don’t have to haul their gear too far from the stage as a gate to the parking lot directly behind the stage makes for an easier load-in and -out. “These bands play other bars in the area, but we’re a restaurant, so the focus is not on alcohol sales but good, quality family entertainment,” said Barry. “Our bread and butter is food sales so whatever we make off alcohol sales is just gravy and not the other way around.” For those seeking libations, the choices are abundant and tasty, especially the Voodoo and frozen margaritas and the refreshing sangria rita, a mix of sangria wine flavors and a sweet tangy margarita.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 46 I took a peek and noticed lots of new gear – Jeremy Walton pedal board appears to be nuclear powered, Todd Fulks new kit has a bigger sound (nice depth and great tone) to it, and David Madigan’s new amp rack that bring aboard a full-bodied metal sound to go along with his liquid metal setup. Some where behind this, I think the new guys started this equipment proliferation mischief with all the new sounds the new materials demand. Just a guess and with Dale at the desk, the results are sounding huge... The house was crazy full as always with more and more people getting out now that gasoline prices are falling, making life more affordable. Someday, I’ll have to venture off the grid and see how the new huge venue copy cats that are popping up around the greater Houston metroplex are doing, but I doubt any can pull off a triple header day as well as they do at Jackie’s. Not a bad day at the office….

great seeing so many of you out and about enjoying the festivities throughout the region - The more the merrier always works. Let the good times roll! ON HARMONIES - In January, after Glenn Frey moved on, “vocal harmonies” came across my mind. Not what you hear when everybody sings the main line in unison, but when different vocal parts combine into a single pleasing sound requiring a talent, discipline and practice not every band can afford. When I heard Hourglass had taken aboard Greg Stephens and were working on vocally harmonic numbers, I thought it worth checking out.

ROLLING IN THE NEW YEAR: Publishing cycles don’t often jive with calendar events, and it would be very poor form to not mention the great time on New Year’s Eve at Mainly Drinks. Fine wine and dining included mixed greens with colorful grape tomatoes, feta, onions, and olives paired with a slightly sweet fruity white blend from Anderson Valley, a Oysters Rockefeller with a French Loire Valley white, fork tender stuffed tenderloin and stuffed crab with a Napa Valley cab, delicate cheesecake with salted caramel and Devil’s Food Fudge Cake with chocolate shavings and a tart raspberry sauce with a smooth Port served by Jonah Gallington. Throughout the night, hometown musicians Freddie Krc, David Hargraves and special guest Donnie McCorquodale entertained the capacity house bringing in the New Year with

EASY STREET LOUNGE - So when Queensryche came to town and limited photography to only 3 songs, we took the hint and hung out with the locals at League City’s Easy Street with Wood & Wind in the house with Stix on the kit. Had a great time catching up with Michael Shanks (Misfit Toys) and Tod Marsella (Bit Tip Tod) with more from these two to come. Easy location and far from traffic. If you’re Krc & Hargraves needing a neighborhood hangout, this could be it. @ Mainly Drinks JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE - Did things up big as usual and in January, hosted the 3rd Benefit for Sophia pulling in a sizeable haul for a great cause. Impressive was how smoothly they were able to transform the cavernous venue from a charity benefit to an NFL playoff sports bar and later that evening, into a Madigan kind of night. Word is getting out as I see more and more people trying out the kitchen’s epicurean creations. As for the band? The normal high-bar stuff with new material continually being worked in mixed along with the favorite rock & roll anthems. These folks are refusing to grow stale. - Continued on Page 45

Quick witted, good looking and funny with business mindsets, these dudes have everything needed to throw one sick, well-performed dance party. Their Monday night Cabo set consists of two DJs at a time on four turn tables. There are no specific set times, but listeners will catch all members of SBMT at some point in the night in different pairs. Because of their openformat, free-style approach and the wide variety of tunes they spin, SouthBeat appeals to all ages. Be prepared to hear music that’s anything from new to old, weird to cool.

SBMT’s always-evolving fan-base continues to grow daily. These boys are out being seen all over Houston, Clear Lake and Galveston. The SBMT boys are also innovators, producers, promoters, stage managers & photographers. Without being on the radio, Chase Patrick asked, “How can we impact the listener?” The outcome: The app-SBMT. Family-friendly Backyard invites music & food lovers to T-BONE TOM’S By Mark Evangelista Night owls never need a reason to howl at the moon with the evening entertainment at T-Bone Tom’s Backyard in Kemah. The family entertainment offered by owners Barry and Melissa Terrell six days a week ranks a close second to the food made famous on the Food Channel’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. With the average outdoor temperature in Kemah historically hovering around 60 degrees in February, heaters keep things toasty and the impressive and encompassing thatched palapa roof keeps patrons shielded from the chilly breeze. “A lot of times, people will drive by and see the gas heaters in the Backyard and decide to stop on in,” said Barry, who has owned TBone Tom’s for 17 of its 42 years in business. The Backyard grew annually at first to build an outside bar, then a deck and a bigger deck for 12 years to became the spacious, inviting place you want to be with your family and friends. “This is my kind of place,” said Barry. “This is my man cave.” The spot appeals to a range of musical tastes from country and western and classic rock to “pan jam,” the beat-laden, infectious dance groove featuring steel drums from the Caribbean. Tom’s Backyard also stands as one of the well-known stops for local and touring bands in the tropical rock genre or “trop rock” as it’s called. (Think of playing the guitar with your toes in the sand, a la the Zac Brown Band, Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney.) The Backyard even gets some tallies from the ballots of the Tropical Rock Association’s “Live Music Venue of the Year” voting. (Nominated three times for this Florida-based award. See www.troprock.org) Some of the touring bands that have graced the Backyard stage include Southern Drawl (Knoxville, Tenn.), Rick Lamb and the Phin Addicts (Nixa, Mo.); and Jimmy and the Parrots (New Jersey). “Plan on having a good time when you get here,” said Melissa, the coowner of T-Bone Tom’s, as well as Tookie’s and the much-anticipated Tookie’s Seafood. “It’s so much fun watching people when they get into the music.”

T-bone Tom’s will crown a new Fickerball Champion during Super Bowl halftime. THE SCENE

Bucket list setting? A recording studio filled with great deceased masters of music. Favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? I saw Aerosmith in Houston last September, the Woodlands Pavilion charged almost 20 dollars for a bomber of sierra nevada but for some reason the hopadillos I had during warm ups made the price seem reasonable. The State of the Texas Craft Beer scene is...? forever gaining great brewmasters and seriously off the wall breweries.

Clear Lake’s High-Energy Trio:

DIRECTOR WOLF I first had the pleasure of meeting two members of Director Wolf at a show in Houston in January. We talked briefly about music, their band and The SCENE Magazine. I immediately felt as if they were my long-time friends. I then met the third member at their first show of 2016 at The Green Room located inside Warehouse Live on January 24. I was thrilled to get to interview the three-piece and watch their energy-filled live set. ~ Lizzy Parker

Spazmatics Fri., Feb. 19 SCOUT BAR

Director Wolf’s drummer, Christian Rose and guitar player and front man, Jacob Eckenrode, have known each other since their youth and grew up playing music together. They added bass player Angel Carrera to the mix a little more than a year ago and became what is now Director Wolf. The name “Director Wolf” came to be after Christian and Jacob booked their first show but still didn’t have a band name. The then-duo decided to each pick one word and combine them as their band name. Jacob chose “director” which is symbolic because Christian is aspiring to be a film director, and Christian choose “wolf,” birthing the current band’s title. - Continued on Page 41
