Sick Puppies Launch A New Era & HardDrive Live Tour at Scout Bar Since bursting onto the rock scene, Australian rock band Sick Puppies have sold over 1 million records, including a Gold album certification for their breakout second full-length Tri-Polar which yielded 2 million in single sales including the gold- certified “You’re Going Down” as well as rock smashes Friday, April 22 “Maybe,“ “Riptide” and “Odd One.“ But when the band takes the Scout Bar stage April 22 as the headliner of the 2016 HardDrive SCOUT BAR Live Tour, it is beginning a new era. Gone is frontman and coSick Puppies founder Shimon Moore. Joining Aussies Emma Anzai (bassist) and Seldom Mark Goodwin (drums) on stage will be Houston singer/guitar Hudson player Bryan Scott, known locally for his work with Glass Intrepid The Soapbox Revolution and Dev Electric. Apparently Scott reached out to Anzai via Facebook within days of the announcement that Moore had left the group. He sent her a video of himself performing, and she swiftly replied.

“Both Mark (Goodwin) and I knew he was the guy right away - he was cool and he sounded great. It was a natural progression. We were totally on to something” explained Anzai. “Something just overwhelmed me,” admitted Scott. “I had a feeling that I needed to reach out. They needed a singer and guitarist and that’s what I am. I had always loved their music and as soon as I saw the post, I went home and immediately sent Emma a message.

Texas Beer Enthusiast Small and Independent Brewers Continue to Grow Double Digits
The Brewers Association (BA) – the trade association representing small and independent American craft brewers – recently released 2015 data on U.S. craft brewing growth. With more breweries than ever before, small and independent craft brewers now represent 12 percent market share of the overall beer industry.

MIKE CORTEZ
Available at Barnes & Noble Stores (including Webster location). Also on Amazon.com
In 2015, craft brewers produced 24.5 million barrels, and saw a 13 percent rise in volume and a 16 percent increase in retail dollar value. Retail dollar value was estimated at $22.3 billion, representing 21 percent market share.
“For the past decade, craft brewers have charged into the market, seeing double digit growth for eight of those years,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “There are still a lot of opportunities and areas for additional growth. An important focus will remain on quality as small and independent brewers continue to lead the local, full-flavored beer movement.” Additionally, in 2015 the number of operating breweries in the U.S. grew 15 percent, totaling 4,269 breweries—the most at any time in American history. Small and independent breweries account for 99 percent of the breweries in operation, broken down as follows: 2,397 microbreweries, 1,650 brewpubs and 178 regional craft breweries. Throughout the year, there were 620 new brewery openings and only 68 closings. One of the fastest growing regions was the South, where four states—Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Texas—each saw a net increase of more than 20 breweries, establishing a strong base for future growth in the region. Combined with already existing and established breweries and brewpubs, craft brewers provided nearly 122,000 jobs, an increase of over 6,000 from the previous year.

Real women reeling in fish for fun & charity By Betsey Ennis Brickhouse “Beauties on the Bay” Fishing Tournament was created because of one woman's desire to bring together ladies in camaraderie for an event filled with laughter, smiles, hugs, kisses, memories and fish. Founder Jackie Powell participated in her first fishing tournament in Corpus Christi in 2012. Her experience left quite the impression as she watched and felt what only women feel when they are surrounded by other women – empowerment, love, and fun, while making lots of memories. Powell knew before the tournament was over, she had to bring this experience back to the Clear Lake area. She came home with a thirst to recreate that amazing female bonding experience for her friends, customers and friends-to-be. She started working on Brickhouse “Beauties on the Bay” Fishing Tournament immediately. To her delightful surprise, the response from local businesses, guide services, friends and family signing up for sponsorships, building teams and donating auction items was positive. Powell recalled, "The greatest feeling was watching my little idea grow into something real and something people were looking forward to attending." With the help of so many people, the 2013 event came together. "I wanted to offer the same kind of excitement to the lady anglers and the feminine first-timers," Powell recounted. "Girlfriends, sisters, moms, and daughters were given the
chance to hang out, have fun, and make new memories – with an abundance of laughter, smiles, hugs and kisses. What’s great is that they weren’t alone! Husbands, boyfriends, fathers, and brothers showed up to support their teams." Jackie says she gets great joy from watching the interaction of the women on the teams. "Just thinking about it now, puts a smile on my face," she said. Teams can be made up of one to four women. Registration is $125 per angler. (Fishing guides do not have to be female and are excluded from fees.) Entry fees cover team expenses, souvenir goodie bags, cash and prizes. A portion of the event proceeds plus the entire auction goes to Harley's Angels, a Houston-area non-profit 501(c)(3) volunteer organization. Harley’s Angels is a group of female motorcycle enthusiasts dedicated to promoting breast cancer awareness, research and education. - Continued on Page 38

JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE
Come in, relax and stay a while By Betsey Ennis “We want to make a regular out of every single guest,” Jackie’s Brickhouse General Manager John Barrera said, and elaborated that every person who comes to Jackie's is referred to as a “guest,” not a customer. “We are all about people,” Owner Jackie Powell said. “From our staff to our guests, we enjoy what we do, and we try to make everyone happy. People are the most important thing to us.” Jackie’s Brickhouse, located at 1053 Marina Bay Drive in Kemah, is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Barrera said their goal is to always have something for Saturday, April 30, Jackie’s Brickhouse will host a special show with the Velcro Pygmies in honor of bass player Jacob and his brother Jeremiah who both died last month in a boating accident. Half of the $20 cover charge will go directly to their family.
everyone: a large diverse menu, live entertainment, adult beverages, food and drink specials, games (pool, darts, arcade games), indoor seating, patio seating and lots of TVs to catch the game. Barrera said that two things you can count on at Jackie’s are “We’re always gonna change with the times;” and “We offer a helping hand to anyone who asks.” Barrera said he’s constantly working on building a better staff, so that together, they can build a better community. “We are open-minded here. We really listen to suggestions from our guests about the music we bring, our menu items and even physical changes at the restaurant,” Barrera said. “Look here and there; You’ll see small touches and (sometimes large) improvements.” Check out the new menu items as well as the crawfish specials Sunday through Friday. - Continued on Page 38

When I first arrived on the local beat, the patio setting I first discovered was at T-Bone Tom’s during the pre-Ike days before the days of the palapa when paying attention to the weather was what diners often did. In those days, the weekly Wednesday night patio crowd enjoyed the Kemah Jam hosted by Wood & Wind – where musicians from across the region and genres would come together hanging out, performing whatever was on their minds and often collaborating with other musicians while sharing the stage – a Wood & Wind & Guests @ T-bone Tom’s spawning grounds for new band formations providing an abundance of quality local live music. LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 41 March with Wood & Wind along with Stix on the kit with musical guests Aaron Dunlap, Kevin Fenton and Angie Emerson. The evening brought back pleasant flashbacks... Keep an eye out people! I’ve been enjoying watching Ms. Emerson the past few months and suspect her collaborations with Cisco is bearing out as she performs the music “as if she owns it” – a strength which resonates well. Speaking of who else plays them like they own them….
The Band Hennessy @ Zone 504 Wood & Wind @ T-bone Tom’s
INVENTION AND REINVENTION - Zone 504 was the place years ago when yours truly had the privilege to judge a karaoke contest. It was that night I got to first hear Ashley Hennessy for the first time. Subsequent judges agreed with our ears as Ashley moved on and eventually took all the marbles at the Bay Area Idol Contest with a power and grit that clearly shook the ’hood. As her newly found position called for this Killer Karaoke Megaforce to replace the teleprompter with a live band, a series of interesting and timely events took place which only the cosmos could arrange – Leah Howard and Erik Garza (lead voices for Rockit Bayou and Pirates Radio) were getting their calls into their big-league roles in life. This created multiple voids in multiple bands presenting Christian Weigand the perfect opportunity to pick up the pieces for a perfect band DNA matchup, consisting today of Ashley and Weigand along with power vocalist Heather Miller, musical instructors Giovanni Capelo (drums) and Darrell Lacy (bass) and topping it off with Jerry Hardin as Mr. Kincaid, into what is known today as The Band Hennessey. This reinvention of talent has
The Band Hennessy @ Zone 504
been nothing short of genius to my ears with a sound that the band truly owns as their own. The tightness and perfection interweave in not of a band on the same page, but as a band that makes up “the” same page, a subtle difference… This band has grown legs and covers the region, which is always cool for new bands. What was even cooler was the evening in March when the band returned to the cozy Zone 504 playing an up close and personal show for all their friends and family who have been supporting them over the years – Now “that’s” a cool show… Well done people! Keep The Band Hennessey on your watch list, okay? SOHO LEPRECHAUNS - By the time you read this, I hope I’ll have seen many of you at the Second Annual Fundraiser for Texas Equusearch that will have gone down at the Brickhouse (on April 2), an extremely deserving good cause indeed. Sister Mary Tarantula @ Jackie’s Brickhouse Not too sure how many regional neighborhood bars are large enough to host a complete billboard backlight setup, but Jackie’s proved that night they can. For a first-time appearance, this band drew a usual full-house crowd. Also in March was the long-anticipated Sister Mary Tarantula show and on St. Patrick’s Day, no less. It’s been years since I’ve last seen this band that hails from Southeast Houston, and best I can reckon, Jackie’s Brickhouse is perhaps the only place I can think of that’s large enough to host the following this band brings. The addition of Bonsko McColloch on keys, allows for a wider variety of songs for the band and vocalist, Marc Nee-
ley, who is arguably the area's top male vocal talent happening these days in the region. I’ve a hunch we won’t need to wait for another St.Patrick’s day to see Sister Mary Tarantula in the area again. I noted they perfectly fill Brickhouse’s Thursday slot. THE TRIBE - Caught a new gig in the area, Ulrich Ellison and the Tribe at Katie’s. This guitar virtuoso from ATX via Graz, Austria (home of Arnold Schwarzenegger), trained as a child in classical piano which Austria is often noted for, plays what’s described by James Wilhite as “a badass guitar” and provided

Many guitar virtuosos are capable of wowing the audience with their talents, yet it takes a certain touch for a musician to bring smiles to listeners. Beyond his crazy musical talents, Ulrich possesses and shares a personal touch with his audience, which is old-fashioned, Austin friendly. I’ve said this before, but it bears mentioning again, for the finest in live music in the area, the friendliest of service, and never ever a cover charge, you’ll find it hard to go wrong at Katie’s. If you missed this show, keep your eyes on Katie’s calendar where we suspect we will get another chance to catch Ulrich and The Tribe. Cheers! TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE - Caught an interesting Tour Stop Clear Lake in March at Scout Bar. The acts were up and coming new bands from the north where they’ve still got snow in the ground – aside from the excitement of getting out on the road, these cats were really digging life having finally made it to Snowbird Territory. The group going by the name, “It Lives,
It Breathes” tore it up incredibly well and despite being a Wednesday show, was worthy of a weekend billing. PARTY FOR THE KIDS - Each spring, hundreds of thousands of fullgrown adults converge just off Loop 610 and proceed to party to no end in the name of raising money for the kids. It’s called the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. With the departure of our regular band (Southbound US) who we usually hang out with at this annual event, it was time to lug the lenses into the big arena where we enjoyed great rodeo action *and* two quality shows this year, Kid Rock and Brad Pais- Continued on Page 33

LOOSE NOTES: Cont. From Page 35 Much like live music, rodeo action is one where the contestants (animals and people) simply cannot “fake it” providing a sincere integrity to the expression and action. As for the shows, both of these were over the top – each showcasing exceptionally strong songwriting, entertainment and performance skills, which by my accounting have withstood “The Test of Time.” Also passing that test and making a surprise guest appearance with Paisley was Larry and Rudy Gatlin, which was a special treat for the entire arena indeed. To the “kids”…. Cheers! - Continued on Page 32

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE
LOOSE NOTES: Cont. From Page 33 THEN PLAY ON - Years ago, I met Wolff DeLong and Brooke Alyson at the first Ike Fest fundraiser event. Wolff was the bass player for Mean Gene Kelton (author of the book “Gigs from Hell” and available on Amazon) and Brooke was starting a Stevie Nicks tribute band. Over the years, I can count the number of times I’ve seen these two perform on a single hand, making their show at the Redneck Country Club, a rare and special event in my books. First order of business, the Redneck Country Club in Stafford is a creation unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed, with an emphasis on Texas live music, Texas-size beverages, comfortable lawn chair seating, cordial polite service, a “very” well lit stage (cameras love good lighting) and a large music hall ambience – a place I wouldn’t mind covering in the future. Back to the band…. Over the years, Wolff joined up with Brooke’s band “Nightbird: Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nick’s tribute band” which currently includes the remarkably uber talented Kelli Thompson – who handles the role of Christine McVie and much, much more. I had the good fortune to catch them opening for Kozmic Pearl The Janis Joplin tribute band where the entire night was magical and memorable, so it made sense to put Nightbird down on “the list.” Fast forward a couple of years… today finds the band with Paul Hatton as the Lindsey Buckingham guitarist, and Danny Shudra holding down the Mick Fleetwood spot. Opening the show was Damn the Torpedoes, a Tom Petty tribute band that is currently holding down the No. 3 slot for Best Cover Band in Austin, which speaks mighty highly. I’ve seen the full up Tom Petty show and only caught Fleetwood Mac while they were in turmoil so my basis is somewhat intact. The surprises that evening included Thompson displaying musical variety and talents that were in my opinion, beyond that of her assigned persona (she also plays her Ovation with an incredible frenzy like that of Anne Wilson). Wolff nailed what I thought was an exquisite Don Henley vocal part on Leather and Lace which was simply exquisite. Clear Lake’s Rasa Yoga’s resident chiropractor, Paul Hatton earned the audience's appreciation with a total immersion of himself deep into the role of Buckingham. I personally enjoyed how Shudra served as the band’s grounding rod and anchor in what would be a John McVie persona. Throughout the evening, Brooke provided the audience a steady presentation of the Nick’s charisma in the categories of tone, demeanor, appearance, flow and when it mattered most, depth and ferocity. Comparing the principals, I’ve no qualm testifying the presentations at the RCC compared to the originals suitably well in terms of music, visual, mood, and overall enjoyment – which is often why we seek live music in the first place, and which is why a show including Night Bird and Damn The Torpedos is on my “Good To Go” list. Put it on yours! IT’S A WRAP - Well folks, we made it through March and while it’s likely your team didn’t win it all, I suggest leaving your seat belts on as baseball’s opening day is upon us and the weather is looking great. Chatting with you in March finds many of you seeking traction on life’s slippery slopes (God bless) or trying to reckon the commotion beyond your control (good luck). If you are amongst the latter - Cambridge/Princeton Professor Josh Zeitz offers, “Throughout history, American democracy has often been a noisy, quarrelsome and indecorous affair. Yet our institutions have consistently proved both strong enough to endure and malleable enough to adapt.” If you are grouped with the former, may I humbly suggest – take care, hang in there, spend time with your family and friends and take in some good eats, fun drinks and enjoy some great live music in the place we call the SCENE - It’ll do you good... If you’re in neither, then carry on! Catch you out there!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACES START 38TH SEASON You don’t need to know the difference between the “main” and the “jib” to enjoy and appreciate the Bay Area’s most beautiful spectator sport, sailing. Few places anywhere have the kind of sailing community that is found in the Bay Area. This area is home to competitive sailing programs and races run by a number of yacht clubs and local sailing associations. For anyone who loves to sail, who could ask for a better place to live or visit than the Bay Area? But sailing is also a fabulous spectator sport, and our area offers residents and visitors the rare opportunity to enjoy the impressive sight of sailing up-close and personal during the Wednesday Night Races on Clear Lake. A month of sailing seminars has concluded and the Opening Party/Skippers Meeting is in the books. The 38th season kicks off on Wednesday, April 6. The organizing body is the Clear Lake Racing Association, an informal association of sailing enthusiasts from all the sailing clubs around the Houston/Galveston Bay area. During the months of April to October (during Daylight Savings Time), there is enough light left over in the day to get off work, and head for the docks to launch boats and get in a sailboat race. The Wednesday Night Races are a wonderful mid-week break, and the short distances between marks provide a great venue to sharpen boat and sail-handling skills. The best spectator outpost and official host venue is Villa Capri in Seabrook where a crowd gathers to watch the races and listen to the commentary from the race announcer. After the race, all the sailors gather at Villa Capri Restaurant to join the spectators for food and drinks and the trophy presentation. There are Wednesday Night Sailboat Races held all over the country, but those held in Clear Lake are unique because many of the marks are placed close to spectator viewing locations. So close, in fact, the spectators get a really good look at the teamwork required to get the jib up and douse the spinnaker. Yacht races are not known as a spectator sport, but when they are viewed in the comfort and proximity of a convenient dock (instead of the middle of a large body of water), it can be quite entertaining and is an event to check out at least once if not weekly. These races began locally in the late ‘70s and have evolved. Major changes in 2016 will be that the number of races have been cut down, and there will be no season ending championship series. One other major change will be a bye week (week of no racing) between each series.

Lakewood Yacht Club to Host the 2016 J/70 North American Championship • May 19-22 Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) won the highly-coveted bid to host the J/70 North American Championship for 2016. A four-day event from May 19-22, the regatta expects to draw in about 60 boats from the Americas and Europe. The race will be held on Galveston Bay. The regatta is open to all J/70 boats. Introduced in 2012 and with a long pedigree of successful and family friendly race boats designed by J/Boats, the J/70 burst onto the scene as a wildly popular class. Its sleek racing design combined with a retractable keel for easy trailer transport make it one of the most highly sought-after vessels to date. LYC’s J/70 Committee Chair Al Goethe describes why the J/70 is so easy to handle for transport, "You can actually lift the keel so that you can trailer the boat in a low position for better stability and bridge clearance. The carbon fiber mast is stepped on top of the deck and can be removed for transport by a single person." Speed and versatility are the two main objectives for J/boat sailors. A long-time sailing enthusiast, Goethe enjoys the versatility of the J/Boats designs. "We wanted to have a boat that we could also live on. Our J/109 has nice accommodations and sleeps six people. When our kids were in the sailing program at LYC, we'd go and spend a weekend on the water. During our club’s Youth Seahorse Camp, we lived on the boat and I commuted to work from there." But while the J/70 features a few amenities for the cruising sailor, the boat remains a favorite design for the serious racing sailors. Recently named Lakewood's Yachtsman of the Year, Goethe admires the competitive edge of

You can sail it with a small family, but you can also get four hot-shot guys on there and do some very serious racing." The J/70 North American Championship is the premiere event on the continent for this boat and consistently attracts the attention of top-ranked professional and amateur sailors. Now in its fourth year, the regatta has been hosted by famed Annapolis Yacht Club, Rochester Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club. As an experienced race boat skipper, Goethe understands the paramount importance of a consistent, capable crew on the way to the finish line. "We pay very close attention to ensuring that all boats are truly identical, the guiding principle of ‘one design’ racing. On the race course you compete only on your sailing ability. If you have identical boats, the winners are determined by their ability to best use wind, current and waves to their advantage, to work the boat as a team and to avoid mistakes." Registration for the J/70 North American Championship is currently underway. Interested racers can go to www.J70NAC.com for detailed information.

Galveston Home Tour Continued From Page 16 2016 HOMES ON TOUR In addition to the eight homes listed below, Galveston Historical Foundation will be presenting select properties as part of its revolving fund program. These rehabilitations in progress show how GHF continues to preserve the islands history through inventive green technologies and stewardship. c.1870 Charles A. and Catherine C. Albertson House - 2017 Avenue N 1⁄2: Noted in the Galveston Architecture Guidebook as a classic example of post-Civil War construction in Galveston, cotton buyer Charles A. Albertson built this grand Greek Revival house about 1870, living there with his wife Catherine until 1892. Severely damaged by the 1900 hurricane, Ben Blum purchased the property, and divided it in half, maintaining his residence in the western portion and moving this section east for use as a rental property. 1883 Levy-Bowden House - 1227 Winnie: Broker and grocery commission merchant Meyer M. Levy built this Victorian townhouse in 1883 for himself and his wife, Julia. After the 1900 hurricane left the property damaged, Levy sold the house to building contractor Miles Cornelius Bowden, who repaired the structure for use as his family’s home. The Bowden family maintained ownership of the property until 1969. 1887 Howard L. and Kate B. Mather House - 1601 Ball Street: German immigrant and carpenter Andrew L. Pfannsteil built this elegant Victorian house in 1887, on lots he had owned and resided on since 1875. The new structure, featuring timbered bays that resemble a Swiss chalet, replaced the existing structure consumed by fire in 1885. Howard and Kate Mather purchased the new house from Pfannsteil in August, 1887, for the sum of $2400. 1888 Benjamin F. Barnes Tenant Cottage - 818 Church: This classic Gulf Coast cottage was constructed in 1888 by brick contractor Benjamin Barnes, who owned several lots in the area. Residing at 828 Church, Barnes used this dormered cottage as a rental property. In a series of ironic twists of fate, the cottage is owned today, by the descendant of a family who occupied the property more than a century ago. 1893 James S. and Violet H. Waters House - 1116 Church Street: Galveston County treasurer James Stephen Waters hired architect Henry Collier Cooke, of the

Nebraska architecture firm Bourgeois Nitchner & Cooke, to design this grand Victorian residence in 1893. The most prominent building on the block, the house was sold by the Waters family in 2012 to new owners who are nearing completion of a thoughtful and thorough rehabilitation of the property. 1913 McDonald-Blake House - 1922 Avenue P: Located just two blocks from the Seawall, this Craftsman-style house was built in 1913 by public cotton-weigher John C. McDonald and his wife, Minnie. After John’s sudden death in 1914, Minnie used the house as rental property until 1919, when she sold it to real estate agent Thomas Blake and his wife, Anne Margret. The current owners purchased the property from the Blake’s daughter in 2013. In 2015, GHF recognized the rehabilitation of the property with a Sally Wallace Preservation Award. 1905 Charles F. Marschner Building 1914 Mechanic Street: In 1905, German immigrant Charles F. Marschner, and his wife, Marie, hired brick contractor Otto Haas to build this two-story building to house their residence and business, the Texas Bottling Works. The structure, which features a variety of architectural styles including decorative brick work and stepped parapet wall with ball finials, was restored in 1989 and designated a Texas Historic Landmark in 1996. Post 1900 Storm Tenant Cottage 1309 15th Street: After the owner of this corner lot perished with his family during the 1900 storm, the Galveston Savings & Loan Company, led by John Stowe and William Selkirk, purchased the vacant lot in 1901. From 1904-1912, Stoew and Selkirk moved four small houses that had survived the Great Storm onto the lot. Used as tenant houses for African Americans, the cottages were purchased by Italian immigrant and grocer, Giuseppe Negrini in 1925. Rehabilitation In Progress • 1915 H. W. Hildebrand Tenant House - 3624 Avenue R 1⁄2: Henry Hildebrand, president of the Anchor Milling Company of Galveston, built this two-story house in 1915 to use as rental property. The original insurance record for the house noted that the entire building was shipped from Michigan “ready to nail together.” The manufacturer of the kit house, called The Fairmont, was the Aladdin House Company. Located in Bay City, Michigan, the company slogan was “Homes Built in a Day.” Founded in 1906 by brothers, Otto and William Sovereign, the business

GRITTY GODDESS Women’s Obstacle/Mud Run returns to Galveston’s Moody Gardens, April 23 On Saturday, April 23, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run returns to Moody Gardens in Galveston. The event is all about women who want to challenge themselves, and have fun in a beautiful venue worthy of a goddess! The 5K- (3.1-mile-) course through Moody Gardens includes almost 30 themed obstacles, and incorporates mud, water, foam and props. “It’s a one-of-a-kind course,” says The Gritty Crew, “because Moody Gardens is such a unique venue with a variety of terrain.” The course incorporates the grounds of Moody Gardens, the lazy river at Palm Beach, the banks of Offats Bayou, and the surrounding area. It even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course, enjoy some sweet snacks, and gaze at the “cabana boys.” The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive, so participants can complete the course at their own pace and enjoy every moment. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will start every 10 minutes beginning at 8:30 a.m., The first wave at 8:30 is the co-ed wave so your significant other can join you! Each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena, and Venus. Teams must register as individuals for the same time/wave and then “create” or “join” a team during their individual registration process. After completing the course, women can rinse off, change clothes, relax and enjoy a frozen yogurt sundae and a complimentary beer. “This event is all about camaraderie, challenging yourself physically, and most of all, having a full day of fun,” says The Gritty Crew, “because every woman deserves a day off!” Although the minimum age to participate is 10 years old for the 5k, on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. there is also the GRITTY KIDS event, a shorter 1K obstacle/mud run for all children, both male and female, ages 6 to 13. For more information and to register, go to www.grittygoddess.com. You can also find them on Facebook at “Gritty Goddess Obstacle Run.” Be sure to tell them you saw them in The SCENE and SAVE $10 off registration when SCENE readers use this code: MOODY10 (valid for registrations ages 18 and up).

New Book by Dayna Steele is Helping Many Families By Domino Taylor A book signing and reception was held recently at DRDA CPA’s for the book Surviving Alzheimer’s: With Friends, Facebook and a Really Big Glass of Wine, by Dayna Steele with Heather Rossiello. The crowd bought books, met Dayna and Heather and mingled with old and new friends. It was an upbeat reception and she gave an enlightened talk to the crowd about her journey. This is a caregiver’s guide to love, humor, patience, confusion, and wine. Dayna Steele went thru a hard road of caring for her mother with Alzheimer and she recorded the day to day obstacles. At the request of many people she wrote this journey to help all families who are dealing with this illness. With unfiltered observations and sometimes dark humor, Dayna, chronicled her mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s on Facebook. This collection of Alzheimer’s updates posted on social media networks included biting humor and raw emotions as Dayna carries you from diagnosis to the inevitable end. Also included are sections from a neurologist, long term care insurance specialist, other caregivers, documents experts, elder care attorney and an assisted living advisor. This is a struggle many people are going to experience in one way or another. If one has to experience it, do it like Dayna with love, wit and wine. Dayna Steele is the creator and CEO of YourDailySucessTips.com. She is also the author of Rock to the Top: What I Learned about Success from the World’s Greatest Rock Stars, and 101 Ways to Rock Your World book series. She is a Rock Radio Hall of Famer and a successful entrepreneur. A pro-

Continued From Page 19 He paints tangible scenes allowing viewers to feel a place, even one they may not have ever visited. His works truly are museum-worthy. His combination of impressionism and realism make his paintings all his own. If one pays close attention, many of Mower’s painting pay homage to some of the world’s greatest painters such as Monet and Cezanne. Like such artists, Mower prefers working with oils. He often quips, “If it’s good enough for Rembrant, it’s good enough for me.” Mower explained he photographs his subjects to paint – whether landscapes, architecture, people or animals. He then arranges the photographs to make the right perspective for him. Mower confirmed, “When it’s a commission, I do what they want, rather than what I

fessional business speaker, Dayna also is a regular contributor to Fox News Houston, consults Fortune 500 companies and is married to author Charles Justiz. Her mom, Fran Nicholson, was her biggest fan. Heather Rossiello, Dayna’s writing partner, has spent the majority of her adult life in the real estate industry and raising two kids that are now in college. She has headed up numerous committees and community projects and most recently working with special needs children in the area. One review from Houston Chronicle’s columnist Lisa Gray says, “I would normally never read a book about Alzheimer’s or click LIKE on a Facebook post about someone’s declining mother. Dayna Steele sneaked past my defenses the same way she dealt with her own misery, with humor by making me laugh, she managed to break my heart.” This pretty much says it all on this gripping book. Dayna is heard on numerous radio shows across the country talking about her book and the journey, and always with humor. Dayna Steele’s book is available at Amazon.com and anyone can sign up for updates, videos and more at YourDailySuccessTip.com, including her longtime radio fans, the ‘Steeleworkers.’

want.” Mower revealed he hopes to continue growing as an artist and exceed his previous works. He remains open to different mediums such as carving, etching, and bronze sculpture in order to avoid “staying as is and just being comfortable.” Painting is a form of communication for Mower. He advised, “Works of art survive you. You don’t have to speak the same language. They make a statement without saying a word. I could write a paragraph and not say what I can in a painting.” Mower added, “I feel lucky to be able to communicate the way I do and show the world around us.”

Featured Artist: Lowell Mower
At the age of 5, Lowell Mower drew a fish so well, he said his mother insisted he get some proper art training. Drawing talent certainly runs in the family of the local artist. He spent many hours sketching at a draft table with his father, a well-known architect. Mower told, “I grew up around artists and it comes natural to me.” Since the age of five, he has also been fortunate to travel the world. According to Mower, having traveled over 45 years in the states and abroad is basically a degree in travel. He shared he has been to countless museums and seen all the greatest artists’ works up close. Mower informed, “It gives me an advantage. I’m borrowing from what I’ve seen.” There is no denying the well-travelled inspirations nor exceptional artist ability when viewing Mower’s paintings. With definitive brush strokes and meticulous detail, Mower creates incredible depth and layers. - Continued on Page 21

NOAH’S ARK BAR & GRILL
WATERFRONT DINING WITHOUT THE WAIT By Betsey Ennis For 18 years, Noah’s Ark, located at 4438 Boulevard in Bacliff, has provided a refuge from the crowds and the mundane. There are no stuffy attitudes in this friendly, tightknit community restaurant and bar. Boasting “the best crew and best view,” few businesses can compete with the unobstructed view of Galveston Bay visible from almost any seat in the house. Excellent service starts at the top and trickles its way down through this ark-inspired restaurant. At Noah’s Ark, guests will never be handed a pager. Open seating is always available, inside or out, guests can seat themselves to take advantage of all the water views or can find a more intimate spot to suit their mood. Large parties of guests are always welcome. Outdoors, Noah’s Ark features three downstairs, waterfront-facing patios. Inside, find a warm, inviting Noah’s Ark-themed interior where kids and the young-at-heart will be delighted by the numerous Noah’s Ark references they’ll find, whether it be the mural, the figurines in the custom shelving unit, or names on the menu.
styles) to Hand Cut Rib-eye Steaks. New menu items include the California Chicken Sandwich and the Turkey Club with Avocado. Tolhurst said that without question, the most popular appetizers are the Hot Mermaids (bacon-wrapped shrimp with jalapeño, fried or grilled) and the Fresh Oysters (raw or grilled). “Be sure to try Noah’s ‘famous’ Oyster Shooters,” he suggested.
From the outside, venture upstairs to the palapa bar. What used to be the top of the Ark is now a gigantic (3,800 squarefoot) rooftop palapa bar and restaurant for 21 and up, called the Parrots Nest. Take a seat at a picnic table or atop a tiki-style barstool, then sit back and take in the view – there’s a waterfront view from EVERY seat. Enjoy live entertainment Thursday through Saturday nights. As you soak in the atmosphere, their slogan comes to life: “Your island paradise just minutes from home.”
Noah’s Ark offers daily specials such as Monday’s Chef Special (new dishes weekly); Tuesday, the slow roasted Pork Roast Dinner is served deliciously tender. Bring the kids! They eat halfprice from the kids menu (8 years old and under); Wednesday is “All-You-Can-Eat” Spaghetti with Meat Sauce or Chili Spaghetti served all day, plus kids 8 and under can eat spaghetti for $1.99; Thursday, the Fish Tacos and Fisherman’s Platter are on special; Friday, choose from 12 Shrimp Dinners for $12.95.
Noah’s Co-owner Steve Tolhurst said, “De-stress, breathe in the tropical atmosphere, taste the light spray of saltwater on your lips, sip a cool drink, slide down a fresh oyster, and know you’ve made it to paradise…Ahhhh.”
Wake up on the bright side and have breakfast served fresh seven days a week (Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to noon; Saturday & Sunday 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.) Arrive thirsty because Bloody Marys, Screwdrivers and Mimosas are $2.75 each from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and all day Sunday. Sundays are even better with the breakfast buffet served from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Continued on Page 15
