AC/DC auditions singer from tribute band BACK IN BLACK In a story line right out of the 2001 See them Friday, May 13 @ Scout Bar movie “Rock Star,” long-time AC/DC tribute band BACK IN BLACK frontman Darren Caperna was selected by AC/DC to audition as their potential new vocalist. Caperna was contacted by AC/DC via phone, and was immediately flown out by the band. Joining him was founding Back In Black member and guitarist Mike Mroz. After meeting the band, and having some tea, AC/DC put Caperna to work. The 3-4 song audition turned into a 21-song concert. Caperna ended up singing the entire “Rock or Bust” tour set, plus two additional songs that Angus wanted to play, “Dog Eat Dog,” and “Riff Raff.” Mroz and Caperna spent over 4 hours with their musical heroes. “It was all so surreal, we had a couple of breaks, and Angus told me some great Bon Scott stories,” Caperna explained. “I still can’t believe that I sang with AC/DC! Even though I did not get the job, it was the experience of a lifetime! Being in a tribute band for 16 years, we were hoping that we would be able to meet AC/DC one day -- but this goes way beyond our expectations! Now, I have a great story to tell my grandchildren.”

Texas Beer Enthusiast Celebrate the
CRAFT BEER REVOLUTION
American Craft Beer Week: May 16th to 22nd
BEER LOVERS
TEXAS : Best Breweries, Brewpubs & Bars BY
MIKE CORTEZ
Available at Barnes & Noble Stores (including Webster location). Also on Amazon.com
For the 11th year in a row, the Brewers Association has declared American Craft Beer Week (ACBW), the nationwide celebration of U.S. small and independent craft brewers. The weeklong tribute provides an opportunity for craft brewers to share their diversity, creativity and passion for the beverage they love with the greater craft beer community. From May 16-May 22, all 50 states will be holding events including exclusive brewery tours, special craft beer releases, food and beer pairings, tap takeovers and more to celebrate the ever-advancing beer culture in the United States. WHEN: Monday, May 16–Sunday, May 22, 2016 Visit the official American Craft Beer Week event calendar on CraftBeer.com for a full – and growing – list of local celebrations. WHY: ACBW has been celebrated for the past decade. Since 2006, craft beer fans have had a designated week to support their local brewery, and beer businesses have had the opportunity to connect with their customers and other beer lovers. Tens of thousands of beer beginners, beer enthusiasts and beer geeks toast the week each year. In 2015, more than 60,000 beer lovers across all 50 states were also part of the ACBW Facebook Community. With over 4,100 craft breweries now open—an all-time high for our country—there’s even more to celebrate.

This is a moving target and I have several favorites that range across many styles. Lately I have been really into the brews that Brash has put out, specifically their EZ-7 pale (really good brew) which was just bumped back by their Fancy Sauce IPA (even better). I could see my fridge stocked with plenty of these on a regular basis. - Continued on Page 44

JOSHUA ANDERSON from Page 47 Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? I'm going to stick with the same style since I recently had the Free State Bora Bora IPA last Christmas and it was truly amazing. It was one of those beers I knew I would miss as soon as I went back home and would love to homebrew a clone. The nose was unlike anything I had ever tried before and I pray that it is as fresh in a can as it was on draft. There are also so many non-Texas brewed beers that I SALOON DOOR BREWING 105 Magellan Circle have yet to try and I almost always wait to try them close to Webster, TX 77598 their home before making a final judgement. Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? At home I loved to brew really big beers (10% - 14% ABV) that you could age for several years in the bottle to see how they would change or even improve over their lifespan. It was exciting to try a vertical of an old ale, imperial stout or barley wine that I had brewed and aged over 34 years. As a commercial brewer I haven't been at it long enough to really say which recipe is my favorite. Right now I am having so much fun learning my system, making mistakes, tweaking new recipes, and developing new ones that it will take some time to honestly answer this question. I still think that the rare imperial or strong ale will be my favorite brew because it just feels like a special occasion to make something so rich and complex. What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? I would guess that styles like ESB, Brown, and Saison are sometimes overlooked, but maybe they aren't brewed enough in certain areas. I think today their are so many choices that locals really have some serious options for exploring craft beer and that is what makes this industry so exciting for me. Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? I would love to make an extended world tour vacation that allows some amazing traveling experience with the potential to try some epic brews as close to their production site as possible. Travel the world and tour breweries.....now that sounds like a great retirement plan to me. Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? Sharing a growler of beer from a local brewery with my friends and family while shooting off fireworks during the 4th of July. The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. I was a chemical engineer for 13 years working in Petrochemicals, which was a very process oriented job. I am a very detailed person and the job suited me for several years, but it was missing the passion I had for home brewing near the end of that 13 year run. It is pretty convenient that process engineering is very similar to commercial brewing and quite a bit of my degree applies to the daily activity in a brewery. Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. If you don't have commercial brewing experience or a very limited amount (like myself) I would recommend hiring or making very good friends with a professional brewer. Having those contacts will avoid so many mistakes that could be detrimental to your product. I was very intimidated by our 10 BBL system, but having somebody to train with for the first couple of batches shortened the learning curve by several batches. It was a huge bonus for our grand opening to have our first batches turn out very well, which also required a little bit of luck. Finish this sentence: "The state of the Texas craft beer scene is‌. growing faster than the yeast in our fermenters Favorite perk of working in a brewery is I get to quickly enjoy a product that I helped to create by hand. The product is more tangible than anything I have had the opportunity to work with and seems to be almost universally accepted as something cool by other people. Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is I have to deal with the Texas heat in a brew house with no AC......at least we have the walk in cooler nearby. If you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? It would be Free State in Lawrence Kansas because my wife would make sure we were close to her family. I have already been told my children are going to be Jayhawks so it would make the most sense to work there, plus I have respected and enjoyed their beer and food for the past 8 years and a little behind the scenes action would be pretty cool.

I am a sucker for going back to my home BAKFISH BREWING state of Wisconsin 1231 Broadway Street and getting some Pearland, TX 77581 New Glarus beer. Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? I enjoy brewing the Circle Hook IPA and the Defying Gravity Double IPA. The hops always smell great when you add them to the boil, and it is fun just dumping pounds and pounds of hops in the kettle. What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? I think there has been a lot of focus on the IPAs lately. While I enjoy the IPA as much as the next person, there is a lot to be said for some of the lighter and more delicate beers Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer oneday? Maybe in one of the Trappist breweries, or the day I can hand my brewery over to one of my kids. Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? It is a tie between the day we finished the first brew on the big system, and the one we had at the end of the shift the first day we opened. Both were long and fulfilling days. The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. I was a chemist in the oil and gas industry for 10 years before we started BAKFISH. Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. It is a lot more work than you think it is. There are many restless nights and long days. Finish this sentence: "The state of the Texas craft beer scene is getting bigger and better everyday! Favorite perk of working in a brewery is I get to watch people come and enjoy my beer in a place that I built. It is one of the most fulfilling things a person can do. Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is I have to put in some really long hours. If you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? Featured Bartender: People always ask me how long have I been bartending, and I like to answer with "a little while," but I have an endless journey ahead of me ,and that's what my focus is on. It's hard to say what my signature cocktail would be (because I have so many that I am proud of), but it would have to be my margarita, mojito, and a caipirinha (Brazilian cocktail). The best tips I ever got were “Customers are no longer customers, they are your guests. When you refer to them as your guests, your body language will show it.” The other was to remember guests names and their drinks. Treat a woman like a queen and make her feel like she’s No. 1. What I love about bartending is that each day is a new day. The bad news of yesterday doesn't follow you into the next. You have a clean slate to start fresh and show the locals what your cocktails are all about. The reward of introducing guests to new cocktails with fresh ingredients and higher quality spirits for the first time is priceless. The look on their faces of astonishment is simply priceless. My inspiration is my mentor of bartending, bar managing, bar consulting, and bar chef Eddie "Lucky" Campbell from Dallas, Texas, owner of Parliament (named in top 24 new bars in 2015) and Knuckle Sandwich which are craft cocktail bars. The man sets no limitations to his dreams and has no obstacles that can stop him. I've never met a gentleman that could create energy like him and a following. If he wasn't a bartender he'd be a preacher! Some of my favorite cocktail books are "The Bar Book" by Jeffery Morgenthaler, "Liquid Intelligence" by Dave Arnold, "Potions of the Caribbean" by Jeff Berry, and "The Tequila Ambassador" by Tomas Estes. With those four books, I think you could get a real good handle on creating cocktails and understanding the fundamentals of prepping a bar. - Continued on Page 40

THE REPUBLIC HOUSE: Bringing Change to the Pasadena Bar Scene By John Ennis Pasadena nightlife has been known primarily – even nationally, thanks to Hollywood – for honky tonks, ice houses and dive bars. But Deer Park product Clint Smith decided it was time for a change and launched The Republic House a little more than two years ago. "The goal was to change the bar scene in Pasadena," Smith explained. "This area needed a nice place to go to without heading downtown (to Houston)."
atmosphere in contrast with most Pasadena bars.
Located at the corner of Fairmont Parkway and Center Street just west of Red Bluff, The Republic House is a Texas-themed bar with something for everyone. Named one of the top 10 bars in the area by the Houston Chronicle and Top Sports Bar by the Pasadena Citizen, the Republic House features a 55-tap craft beer wall, premium whiskey selection, handcrafted cocktails, unique wine list and an always-changing gastropub menu. Smith is quick to admit that the bar business is an ever-evolving industry, and he enjoys traveling and visiting other markets to stay up on and in front of new trends and concepts. But one of his first concepts will never change. "When we started, I knew we needed to do it with a higher class feel for this area," Smith explained. "We didn't want to be a dive bar, and we also didn't want to be fine dining. But we wanted to attract women with our clean, comfortable atmosphere."
But the attention and creativity invested in the venue's environment and feel goes far deeper. The beautiful tables were built from recovered Louisiana swamp logs that sunk during the Civil War and were brought up, dried out, cut, sanded down and epoxied as table tops. The wall treatments were built by friends of Smith who make sound booths for radio stations and recording studios. The bar is completely hand built. "The bar top is cedar from Huntsville," explained Smith. "We picked out the trees, brought them in and dried them here. Friends came over, we cut the wood and probably spent 200 hours with some of my original staff to get the epoxy set just right. It is so level, that you can pour a beer out on it, and it stays in place." Smith created the design on the stainless wall behind the taps and used a bank vault drill to make each hole, which took much longer than expected -- "A true labor of love." That tap wall is the largest east of Houston and offers an impressive selection of local, Texas and national craft beers, including special releases and rare seasonals only available at select venues. With the growth of the craft beer movement in Texas, Smith often wonders "if 55 taps are enough?" (A future venue he is planning for the Humble area, The Republic House #2, will have 160 taps.) The Republic House also has an extensive craft bottle selection, including some past releases that are being aged.
Although seemingly simple and even mandatory in many local cities, not allowing smoking indoors is one immediately indentifiable example of The Republic House's commitment to

Featured Bartender: Continued from Page 43 There are three non-cocktail books I'd recommend reading. "And a Bottle of Rum" by Wayne Curtis, "History of the World in Six Glasses" by Tom Standage, and "Proof: The Science of Booze" by Adam Rogers. They talk about the history of the world from a drink’s perspective that I feel is invaluable. All three form a kind of trifecta for me understanding how drinks play a part in the larger picture. The secret to making a cocktail with a bad reputation a good one is making sure it has some redeeming qualities. So I sort of dissect the drink and apply all that I've learned about making classic cocktails to that drink. An Amaretto sour is a common cocktail that can be ordered at a typical bar and generally be served with amaretto and sour mix. But what if you chose an amaretto brand like Disaronno, high-proof bourbon, fresh lemon juice, and little egg white, suddenly you have a super delicious cocktail that has a little body to it. I enjoy simple drinks, and I make sure to do as the Romans do (beer and Tequila shot). I don't go out to learn or stay relevant. If I go out, it's to enjoy the simple things in life. I love mojitos and margaritas, Lone Star and tequila. I go to Noah's Ark a lot, because it's biker friendly and has an amazing view and service. My dream is to build my rum and Tequila bar shack and serve my famous Cubano sandwich, ceviche, and key lime pie.

Greetings, good people! I hope April’s high water and the IRS spared you hassles, and I hope you’re catching a big Spring Fever because it’s here! Like many of you, we played host to a huge gathering of out-of-towners in April. Thanks goodness for all you out on The SCENE where we took them. You all were fabulous! The prejudgment many aliens have when they visit Houston metroplex is of massive roadways, our huge ditches that we call “bayous,” concrete jungles, a lack of vintage antique buildings, and massive traffic which may be true in some parts, but rest assured, my guests left knowing they were treated well, surrounded by friendly native folks while they enjoyed fine foods and spirits, and best of all, took in some really nifty live music. Here’s a quick rundown of some of what went down in April.
Andy & The Dreamsicles @ Ginger’s
Ginger’s Reopening - We stopped in to check out the reopening of Ginger’s in San Leon and on what had to be perhaps the best-est day in April for a patio party and with Andy and the Dreamsicles on stage. Boy, was it a party! The place was fresh and expanded with what may be the one of the nicest patios happening in the Bacliff/San Leon area. We didn’t have a chance to check out offerings from their new kitchen, though the bar staff was exceptionally crisp handling the full house with ease. This could be a great setting for a music festival perhaps? Stay tuned. - Continued on Page 37

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 39 Lost is Not Alone - When I was a child, I would sit at the breakfast table eating my Captain Crunch or Frosted Flakes and enjoy reading the cereal box labels hoping to learn more about what I liked. These days, I find myself reading Mission Statements of organizations I come across for the same reason when I find organizations I like (one of those '80s things). Texas Equusearch seems to have it the other way around where simple mention of their name brings about a swell of attentiveness and testimonies of their actions much, much louder than any words a mission statement can articulate. Nonetheless, like the organization’s leadership and volunteers, the Equusearch Mission Statement is simple, deep and effective – A good read…. So in the middle of prime patio season, with the Houston metroplex hosting such notable events as the Shell Houston Open and the Kemah Crawfish Festival, the perfect turnout gathered at Jackie's Brickhouse for a beautiful day of celebrating and fundraising to support the Texas Equusearch mission. This was the “40th” charity event hosted by the staff at Jackie’s and included Hamilton Loomis heating things up on the outdoor event stage (5 star in my books), a legion of volunteers, parking lot shuttles (Jackie’s has perhaps the biggest parking lot happening), and supporters turning out and turning in a cool quarter million. Now *THAT’S* cool… Well done, people! After this over-the-top event and later that evening, we stopped in again at Jackie’s to see if anybody was left standing. Sure enough, after this full day of events the place had morphed into nightlife mode with Rapture with big sound and big lights on the stage. Rapture is one of the region's top cover bands and, of course, that meant a full house present. There are no doubt large entertainment venues popping up across the region wanting a piece of the action. Best I can tell, none of them do it day and night with the heart and spirit like the folks at Jackie’s Brickhouse. Speaking of heart and spirit... - Continued on Page 35

Black Magic Box - In the month of April, Tony Vega Band, released their smokin’ hot, highly anticipated seventh album, “Black Magic Box,” and we took part at his CD release party at Katie’s in Bacliff. People often ask where the best place is to enjoy an evening of the blues, and without even checking to see who’s playing? Well, I tell them, “Katie’s, of course!” According to the band, “The title came about from the record being written and recorded entirely with Tony’s 1947 Gibson hollow body guitar, and like the "greats" who brandished the same weapon throughout the years; his ability to conjure the instrument’s enchanting power is evident on these songs.” The band mentions further, “The lo-fi, bare bones, blues sound of 'Black Magic Box' is captured with an immaculate care that pays homage to classic blues recordings of the mid20th century. The record, produced by Vega in the bluesdrenched music mecca of Austin in only five days, features such legends as Guy Forsyth (Guy Forsyth Band, The Asylum Street Spankers), and Johnny Moeller (Fabulous Thunderbirds),” and Houston’s very own Randy Wall, just to name a few. I listened to this CD several times and believe it presents two phases of the album making process. Regulars at Katie’s know

how Vega provides an effortless presentation of improv, intensity, and tone for listeners. Throughout an entire night, one would be hard pressed to catch any repetition in licks or riffs save for the basic verse and chorus necessities – A true joy! Knowing this, the first four songs of this album, it’s as if the session musicians in Austin are basically in awe of Vega as we know him and all of them are putting forth their finest instrumental playing in a frenzied effort to prove they can keep up with – in the words of Billy Gibbons – this Houston Blues “Monster.” How this sounds to the ears is like a barrage of well recorded, awesomely played individual instrument performances, mixed together so that every instrument is heard, and played in Phi Slamma Jamma mode. Then suddenly, the album takes a pivotal turn on track number 5, “Moody Park” which as Vega shared, “Is completely different than all the rest of the tracks” and the album transforms itself through the last four songs into an orderly cohesive arrangement of dynamics, allowing the uber-talented studio musicians to tag team - Continued on Page 33

THE REPUBLIC HOUSE: Continued from Page 41 But you don't need to be a craft beer enthusiast or hop head to enjoy a cold one at The Republic House. "When we first started, we knew we would be a transition bar and were careful to include some ‘easier drinking’ beer on our wall because we had to transition people off of traditional domestic beer," Smith explained. "We also still sell domestics (in bottles) -- which some people that are really into craft beer don't agree with -- but we want to be a bar that appeals to those who drink domestics also. Maybe we will turn them onto craft, but we aren't trying to force craft." Smith explained, "four or five years ago, I never touched craft beer." So he is careful in how he approaches transitioning customers. "It is all about developing your palate. If you take a person drinking your average pilsner, and you throw them an IPA, they may not be ready for it. But we can recommend a quality, tasty beer to start with." Smith is also very careful in how the Republic House maintains the bar's draft system, which can play a major role in the taste and quality of beer – or lack of – if not given proper attention. First, The Republic House
uses a system developed in-house by a couple staffers called "True Tap." Every 15 days they clean all the tap lines. It is a more consistent, frequent and pro-active solution than waiting for beer distributors to clean the lines. As a matter of fact, the "True Tap" protocol has proven to be so effective that other bars that put craft beer in priority are now paying for the service. The Republic House also uses a foodgrade liquid CO2 instead of the common gas CO2 and a nitrogen generator instead of a nitrogen tank to mix its own high-quality "beer gas" to serve draft beer. If that all went over your head, no problem. The key takeaway is they have an attention to detail in pursuit of the serving the cleanest and highest-quality draft beer not common in most bars. One area of expansion and exploration for The Republic House is in the area of hand-crafted Cocktails. Current options range from the Key Lime Pie Martini or Republic of Tejas Martini to the Jalapeño Cucumber Margarita, to their twist on the Bloody Mary, the Blood Sweat & Beards, among others. But keep an eye on the cocktail menu as more are on the way.
Speaking of menus, the kitchen is ready to prepare a number of tasty appetizers and entrees. This writer can personally endorse both the TRH Cuban and the Quesadillas. (Trying the Mushroom Melt and Over Stuffed Texas Dip are next on the list.) The common theme is delicious, large portions at a great price. Rumor has it, Smith and the team acquired the space next door and plan to open a pizza place which will only expand the food options available. As the sun goes down and the evening comes, the feel in The Republic House starts to change. "At night, the music starts bouncing and the bar transforms into more of a night club with shots flying," according to Smith, who admitted it is more of a reaction to the guests than part of the initial plan. DJs come in on Friday nights, and there is live music every Saturday night. There is something going on every day including Open Mic on Mondays, Taco Tuesdays and Big Ass Beer Night on Wednesdays. Go "like" The Republic House on Facebook to stay current with all the ongoing promotions, tap takeovers and special events. But more importantly, go check it out, and be sure to tell them The SCENE sent you.

Around the corner we stopped in to catch a set of J.R. Ancira at The Monkey Bar. The folks at The Monkey Bar have always been live music supporters. They provide entertainment as often as weather permits. We caught J.R. at his first gig down the road at Jackie’s Brickhouse and noticed he was one of the few to play a Godin Multiac. Over the years, he’s settled into the Clear Lake Shores neighborhood, regularly performing at The Monkey Bar, and has since replaced the Godin on stage – Yet still, the song remains the same…. First Time & Follow Up - We stopped into T-Bone Tom’s to check out this new band we had heard about, That 70’s Thing with Pamela Saxon King (lead vocals), Chris Neman (guitar), Todd Fulks (drums) Mike McCulloch (keyboards and vox), and Joe Cavazos (bass). Many of these names should sound familiar to listeners from the Clear Lake music
scene. Self-described as a groove and funk band, I’ve marked these folks for a follow-up but judging from the crowds, do That 70’s Thing yourself a favor, don’t wait for @ T-bone Tom’s me, go ahead and check these cats out yourself, and be sure to wear your dancing shoes. Later in April, we took a party of 18 out-of-towners to try out the large-scale family dining experiRat Ranch @ ence at T-Bone T-bone Tom’s Tom’s, and while we were there, scored a nice catch with Rat Ranch in the house. With one album under their belt, the band tells me we can be expecting a series of singles coming out on iTunes in the near future. This is truly a band you can listen to for two measures, and know it’s Rat Ranch. If you haven’t scored their recent album yet, get it because it’s a good one. Rat Ranch is often booked up a year or two in advance, so plan accordingly. Got it? These guys “do” bring along a crowd, so when you do get them signed, your event planning staff will think you’re a genius, okay? Oh, the show at T-Bone’s? Crazy fun, of course! - Continued on Page 32

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 33 Tour Stop Clear Lake – I was chatting with a fellow music fan about that huge venue they have up in the Woodlands where there bring in large bands and both reached the conclusion, “That’s nice, but you still can’t get up close like you can at Scout Bar!” And with that, we stopped in when multi-platinum Candlebox Candlebox @ Scout Bar brought their worldwide tour into Clear Lake. In Candlebox @ a day and age Scout Bar when time is valuable, it’s good to know so many of you out there will clear your Wednesday night and take in a Candlebox show at our local, neighborhood Scout Bar. Man, what a crowd! Kevin Martin was in virtuoso musical form and enjoyed asking if our Texans had gotten a quarterback yet while the band delivered massive doses of rejuvenating sonic hits to the body. River from the Jeff Tillman heralded FAME CD Release and Muscle Party Shoals Recording Studios to recent adventures here in the Bayou City. Produced by Phillip Shanks, the two of them combine on seven parts of the mix with Don Bonner sitting in on sax for “Gotta Have Love.” I played this album several times and found it pleasant to listen to, a genre in short supply these days. Shanks does a superb job technically, capturing the sounds accurately, with appropriate equalization and mixed cleanly. I was spoiled getting to hear the music first played live at Jeff’s CD release party complete with a live music sound tech and confess the open stage, live ambiance gave the music some room to dynamically breathe, expansion depth, piercing leads and large hall reverberation. This album is correctly mixed affording the listener to add sauce of their choosing during playback, to contemplate the thoughtful lyrics and tasty instrumental, making this one great album that should translate and carry well during your travels and adventures, be they out and about or in your mind, through ear buds, stadium speakers or your trusty Jensen 6x9s. Tillman and Shanks: Hire these guys! Both of ’em... The Lighthouse District - If you’re local, you’ll know that this time of the year, the Lighthouse District can be one packed place and with some sort of festival happening each weekend. Samplings during April were very good starting with Zone 504 and The Bodacious Tatas. - Continued on Page 31
Tillman’s Corner - After laying low on the music scene for several months, Jeff Tillman has reemerged from the recording studios with his second CD album, “Tillman’s Corner,” a 10-song compilation about his life and times, I suspect, originating from his early days in Florence, Alabama, across the Nunnuhsea

This was one of the first bands I ever covered when I first came onto the SCENE and delighted with their ability to arrange covers so that they clearly have the easy to recognize “bodacious” sound that is uniquely their own. (The Tatas have been one of the few bands to buy ad space in The SCENE, if you’re in a band seeking an ad spot, drop me a line). New to the band is vocalist Emily Glazener, whom we first heard when the Tatas tested things out at a Cabo open mic last year. I’m pretty positive my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt wrote well of The Bodacious Tatas, and I would not be afraid to bet he’d be pleased with the band’s addition of Emily.

Punkstar Full Throttle Radio - We’ve been covering this cool live internet broadcast show for a few months now, and it seems that word is getting around as writers for some of the other Houston publications dropped in to check out the action. The local bands that evening included In Da Skies and Carranza. We’ve covered In Da Skies in prior issues of the SCENE, a self- Punkstar Full Throttle described “Reggae, Alternative, @ Dub Rock” band that’s presently Scout on the path of inventing their Bar sound and having a great time along the way. Carranza was a first-time catch for my ears. This Houston rock band clearly came out with their A-game and blistered the stage as if they were auditioning for A. D. Rowntree – Like many in the Houston metroplex, I’ve now got Carranza on my list of bands “good to go” and I’m sure A.D. would too... - Continued on Page 30 In Da Skies @ Scout Bar

Epicurean Evening award winner on their first year on the Clear Lake SCENE. To celebrate the event, a packed patio gathered (the area can stand to have a few more patios like this) for a night of British Invasion and Classic Americana hits with “Foregone Conclusion,” solidly on my Foregone list for New Conclusion Band of the @ La Poz Cafe Year honors. This talented trio includes Ryan Guidry on lead guitar, David Blassingame on bass, Steve Candelari pulling Keith Moon duty on the kit, and all three sing a great three-part harmony. I’m not exactly sure how La Poz would be able to have these guys as their house band, but judging by the turnout, the idea of a French eatery live music hall bears merit. Congrats, La Poz! To be continued...

Almost Endless Summer @ El Lago Celebration throw a party in the park for it’s citizens. We caught exactly that at the El Lago 55th Anniversary Celebration at McNair Park with Almost Endless Summer on the stage. This event which could only have been better had the party rolled on into the night and had fireworks, but in my mind, this was the perfect band for this event. In a neighborhood where space travelers would reside and raise family – the travelers have since moved on, yet the spirit of this charming small town carries on – A great place to be! Gritty Goddess - When I’m out on the beat and chatting with people, they often ask me, other than live music, what else I like to photograph. I often answer: Kids playing, animals being themselves, and athletes. There’s really no faking what these subjects do and the integrity of their expression is sincere. And with that, we returned to Galveston for the spring run of the Gritty Goddess mud run. I like shooting the participants at this event as they take on the course overcoming obstacles, lend each other helping hands, and still find time for frolicking with some good clean fun!?!?! Over the years, many of you readers out there have taken on the challenges of this course and for some reason, witnessing new contestants coming out each year never gets old. Well done, ladies! It’s a Wrap - Recently, our area has been undergoing an exodus of friends and musicians leaving our area (Steve Johnson of Southbound, Jason White of Mama Tried, Cam Rowe of Cassette Tape, and Mark Lum of Alvin and the Slick Punks, to name a few). This is nothing new as musical talent leaving footprints here while on the path to their calling has been happening for decades. Nonetheless, our appreciation and memories of the great music moments they shared with us on The SCENE remains. And as we bid them farewell, I remind myself there will be new collaborations and new blood appearing on the local live music SCENE to join the ranks of the great live music already here. Give them a chance when you spot them out there. I look forward to being out there with you when that happens. All the best!!

Lakewood Yacht Club set to host 34th Annual Shoe Regatta • May 14-15 Lakewood Yacht Club’s race committee Chairman Larry Rogers has announced the kick-off for the 34th Annual Shoe Regatta. To be held over the weekend of May 14 and 15, Lakewood hosted the first Shoe Regatta in 1982. Bay Access, a not-for-profit organization that supports amateur racing, is the organizing authority of the races. The Shoe Regatta, which is open to the public and raced on Galveston Bay, is a favorite among local racers because in the past, each crew member of the winning boat in each class was awarded a certificate for a pair of deck shoes; hence, the name of the regatta. This year, crew members of the winning boat of every class will receive a pair of premium Musto sailing shoes with exceptional grip for the serious sailor. The Shoe Regatta is for one-design, handicap and cruising sailboats over 20 feet in length and with a cabin. There will be three race courses to accommodate one-design, PHRF and distance classes. The skippers meeting will be held on Friday, May 13th at 7:30 pm in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club, 2425 NASA Parkway, Seabrook, TX. We urge all skippers to attend this important gathering so that they can take full advantage of all aspects of this weekend regatta.
The Saturday evening party will feature music by “Southbound” and a dinner of comfort food including fried chicken. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 4 pm on Sunday, May 15th, and will also be held in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club. In addition to shoes, the first and second place skippers will receive a bottle of DonQ rum. Sponsors who make the 34th Annual Shoe Regatta possible include the following: City of Seabrook, DonQ, Musto, KO Sailing, True North Marine, Little Yacht Sales, Blackburn Marine, Alliant Insurance, Texas Coast Yachts, Edna Rice Recruiting, Davis Marine Electronics, The Yacht Sales Company, and Mauri Pro Sailing.
The J/70 North American Championship is the premiere event on the continent for this boat and consistently attracts the attention of top-ranked professional and amateur sailors.

J/70 North American Championships: from Page 26 But while the J/70 features a few amenities for the cruising sailor, the boat remains a favorite design for the serious racing sailors. Recently named Lakewood's Yachtsman of the Year, Goethe admires the competitive edge of the popular J/70. "The J/70 is purely a race boat. It's also a boat that's relatively easy to sail. It's very versatile and forgiving. You can sail it with a small family, but you can also get four hot-shot guys on there and do some very serious racing."
Leukemia Cup June 25 & 26 • Galveston Bay
Now in its fourth year, the regatta has been hosted by famed Annapolis Yacht Club, Rochester Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club. As an experienced race boat skipper, Goethe understands the paramount importance of a consistent, capable crew on the way to the finish line. "We pay very close attention to ensuring that all boats are truly identical, the guiding principle of ‘one design’ racing. On the race course you compete only on your sailing ability. If you have identical boats, the winners are determined by their ability to best use wind, current and waves to their advantage, to work the boat as a team and to avoid mistakes."

Lakewood Yacht Club to Host the 2016 J/70 North American Championship • May 19-22 Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) won the highlycoveted bid to host the J/70 North American Championship for 2016. The regatta is open to all J/70 boats. Introduced in 2012 and with a long pedigree of successful and family friendly race boats designed by J/Boats, the J/70 burst onto the scene as a wildly popular class. Its sleek racing design combined with a retractable keel for easy trailer transport make it one of the most highly sought-after vessels to date. Speed and versatility are the two main objectives for J/boat sailors. A long-time sailing enthusiast, Goethe enjoys the versatility of the J/Boats designs. "We wanted to have a boat that we could also live on. Our J/109 has nice accommodations and sleeps six people. When our kids were in the sailing program at LYC, we'd go and spend a weekend on the water. During our club’s Youth Seahorse Camp, we lived on the boat and I commuted to work from there." - Continued on Next Page

She said, “People are just amazed at what I can pull off, the same with painting.” She stated, “I love working with large canvas. Designing space is a huge canvas and they correlate with each other. The world is also a huge canvas.” Schafer revealed she has a keen ability to read people really well and that even perfect strangers will walk up to talk her. The program began with a welcome from 2016 Lunar Rendezvous Festival Co-Chairs Kim Barker and Lisa Holbrook, followed by a few words from Board of Directors’ Chairman Michael Landolt who recognized the rest of the Board. 2015 Lunar Rendezvous King Jerry Ross introduced Kevin Duke, General Manager of The Fitness Center at South Shore Harbor, as the 2016 Lunar Rendezvous King. Kevin has been a part of the Clear Lake area since the age of six growing up in Clear Lake Forest where his mother still resides in the same house. He attended Ed White Elementary, Seabrook Intermediate and Clear Lake High School. Little did he know that his third grade teacher, Dr. Pat Wilson, would be a lifelong mentor and one of the reasons Kevin has been involved with the Lunar Rendezvous Festival for so many years. Growing up, Kevin played in and won the Lunar Rendezvous Festival tennis tournament several times. When Dr. Wilson served as the Festival’s Chair in 2000, she encouraged Kevin to chair the tennis tournament. That same year,
Kevin’s son, Ashton, served as a festival page. Kevin headed up the tennis tournament for 15 years and his wife Ruth served as co-chair for many of those years. The tournaments have raised more than $75,000 for the festival. It is through his tennis connection that Kevin has made a name for himself in the Clear Lake area, not only as a teaching tennis professional but as an astute businessman, Clear Creek ISD advocate, and through his various philanthropic activities. Tennis has been a constant throughout Kevin’s life. He played on several Clear Lake High School state-ranked teams in the 1980s and then played at Odessa Junior College, Texas Tech University and the University of Houston from which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Finance. Kevin has dedicated himself to his profession both on and off the court. Check out next month’s issue for more info on the 2016 LRF.

This year the festival is looking forward to quality and competitive projects. Last year’s competition was outstanding and the entered projects were from across the U.S. and Clear Lake area also. They were highly competitive projects judged by professional film judges. Every film maker and screenwriter is urged to step up their game and submit their projects. The Saturday night Gala and Awards Banquet will be at the Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook. Regular entry rates are affordable and the competition will be with films from all over the world. CREATIVE SPIRIT
Featured Artist: Dar Schafer
By Kelley Dawson
Dar Schafer’s creativity glows as aurora around her. You aren’t only drawn to her; you’re captivated by what she’s drawn. Schafer, a selfprofessed free spirit and “hippy at heart,” has travelled to 26 countries and said that she is inspired by the places she sees and the people she meets. She expressed, “The opportunity of lots of travel is incredible; to see what’s out there really does inspire you.” Schafer stated she often paints by memory, but also with photographs. She started painting at the age of 13 and sold her first painting when she was just 16 years old. In high school, Schafer proclaimed that she was very good with colors. “My fellow art students would call me ‘Michelangelo’ because if they couldn’t mix a color right, I could just do it,” she informed. Schafer still mixes beautiful colors. She paints with oils, acrylics, and water colors. She mentioned her recent parle into abstract art. She paints using mixed media. “Abstract painting never made sense to me before. It’s a new challenge and I really like it,” admitted Schafer. She believes it helps her progress as an artist. She disclosed, “I’m pouring my heart out telling a personal story, but to each viewer [the painting] tells their own story not just mine. I can lead them in a certain direction and they finish it.” Schafer explained she likes to incorporate a lot of texture with her art “to be able to use all senses.” - Continued on Page 21

What happens when two fellow photographers join forces in a unique way, with photography and poetry interwined to showcase the beauty of the moment as seen in nature? A beautiful new book is the result named “Literary and Visual Metaphors.” This was published by Author Dion McInnis, of League City, with Laszlo Perlaky as collaborator. This 216 page book of Zen, Nature, Poetry and Photography is a visual treat and would also be an excellent gift for all ages and an idea for Mother’s Day, graduation gift or Father’s Day.
Various day camps ready for kids this summer As the end of the school year approaches, it is time to think of all the things that the kiddos want to do this summer and to start making plans. The Clear Lake area has many options and the hardest thing is to decide which program(s) to choose for the children. Many area day cares, event centers and churches offer summer children’s camps of all ages. Not every family can commit to a month-long camps, but many local facilities offer day camp options. Here are some of camps that fill up fast, so reserve your spot early.
“As a fine art photographer and portrait photographer, I see with all my senses to reveal beauty in life, in you, in living. Preserve the moments and the memories with fun...and in ways that affect how you see yourself, your loved ones and life. Really!” Dion stated. His wife Ginny attests to his constant vigilance, “{When we travel,} he’s always interested in the local food and drinks. Wherever he goes, he brings back ideas he learns along the way to share with his Topwater customers.” Today Topwater Grill is the largest employer in San Leon, but what the Jakubas family started years ago was created organically out of love from the growth of a successful marina called April Fool Point Marina on Galveston Bay!

Betsey Ennis (Co-Founder) Andy Eng Since those days, the family has added shrimp and oyster boats, fuel docks, and in 1999, their eldest son Robert opened Topwater Grill on the property. Fortyone years later, Captain Wally and the Jakubas family still operate these businesses. A property that started out as “just” a little marina has blossomed into quite the booming business hub for this family.

Memorial Day marks the 17th anniversary of Topwater opening its doors. Robert and Ginny are quick to credit Captain Wally and Barbara for their vision, passion and drive to purchase the property with a fledgling marina four decades ago, where next door, Robert had a dream to open a little place and do what he loved – to serve the public delicious food and amazing drinks.

Robert started in the restaurant business at age 15 as a bus boy at the Flying Dutchman, where he met owner Frans Gillebaard, who was to become Robert’s mentor. He would go on to hold every position in the restaurant industry including 15 years as a bartender before opening Topwater Grill. Topwater Grill: Continued from page 10 They look similar to a regular Gulf Coast shrimp, but are much larger and have a sweeter taste that is similar to the rich, luscious and tender consistency of a lobster. Ginny insists they are “out of this world!”
DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT TOPWATER?
Oyster enthusiasts love Mondays at Topwater with half-price raw oysters all day. True, the menu is heavily stocked in seafood options, but Topwater does have quite an array of other options including steak, chicken, sandwiches, burgers, salads and pasta. The appetizers, desserts and specialty drinks (adult beverages) are definitely worth touring as well.
Glide Therapy: Last year Topwater Grill’s added to the outdoor seating experience with the addition of various roller gliders. “The roller gliders are our version of the traditional picnic table and benches together with its own umbrella fabric sunshade that glide together. It’s a way to enjoy our fabulous food with a cold beverage of your choice in a unique patio setting by the Bay!” said Ginny Jakubas.
Topwater guests have likely noticed the boat ramp and marina located adjacent to the 5,000square-foot restaurant. In 1975, Wally and Barbara Jakubas purchased four acres of land that included April Fool Point Marina. They started simple. Charging $3 per boat launch and $4 for live bait. - Continued on Page 13
“You Hook It; We Cook It!” Bring in your fresh catch of the day. Topwater cooks it: fried or grilled, served with sides. Choose to add a topping if you please: Drunken Sauce, Crawfish Ettouffe, Red Pepper Cream and Crab Meat Dressing. For $3 more, add a side of fried shrimp.

TOPWATER GRILL SERVING UP FRESH GULF COAST SEAFOOD FOR 17 YEARS By Betsey Ennis For 17 years Topwater Grill has been serving fresh Gulf Coast Seafood along San Leon’s waterfront. Topwater has become a bit of a local treasure – a hidden jewel, if you will – that most locals know and area visitors seek to find April Fool Point. It’s always worth the trip to this bay front restaurant, not only for the view from every seat in this popular seafood restaurant, but for the quality food. Priority No. 1 at Topwater Grill is fresh Gulf Coast seafood. “We operate our own shrimp and oyster boats and always buy local whenever possible,” owner Ginny Jakubas said. “One non-negotiable is that we ONLY serve Texas shrimp.” How popular are the shrimp at Topwater Grill? The top three most-ordered dishes are shrimp: Cold Boiled Shrimp, Royal Red Shrimp, and the No. 1 best seller is the 12-piece Fried Shrimp.
THE SCENE
Let’s dive in: Royal Red Shrimp are served in a ceramic steamer pot with a touch of Old Bay. These shrimp can only be found in the Gulf of Mexico in very deep waters along the coastline from Texas to Florida. Shrimpers have to cast nets 2 miles down to get them. They live only in dark cold waters at 50 degrees. These shrimp never see sunlight until they are caught. And to Ginny’s knowledge, Topwater Grill is the only restaurant in Texas to offer them on a daily basis. Royal Red Shrimp are high in protein and low on carbohydrates. - Continued on Page 10

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT TOPWATER? The Marina: Fishing Guides have been running their chartered fishing guide businesses out of April Fool Point Marina for more than 40 years. Many of these guides currently offer full-day and halfday fishing trips out of Galveston Bay. There are currently more than a dozen guides who use the April Fool Point Marina as their home base. The marina also has fuel docks and plenty of space for boaters to tie up and take a break from the waves and sun for a drink and a meal at Topwater Grill. Fisherman’s Breakfast: After decades of the fishing guides suggesting Topwater provide breakfast for their hungry tour goers, they finally took the plunge! The “Fisherman’s Breakfast” is served 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Choose from Country Boy, French Toast, Fishermen’s Eggs, Fish & Grits, Breakfast Biscuits and Breakfast Burrito. You don’t have to be a fisherman to love these breakfasts, offered at $4.99 each.
