RESTAURANT & BAR SCENE EXPLODING WITH GROWTH
The number of new restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs that have recently opened (or will soon open) is the largest in the 15 years this magazine has been covering this area’s entertainment “SCENE.” And that observation does not include venues about to break ground, nor ambitious projects rumored, nor the impressive number of venues that opened late last year and early this year, including Top Golf and the multiple restaurants in Baybrook Mall’s outdoor expansion. Bottom line: The growth of our local entertainment segment is hard to miss. Also hard to miss for anyone who uses Highway 146 to travel between Harris and Galveston counties is Tookie’s Seafood in Seabrook. Easily one of the most-anticipated upcoming restaurant openings, the 12,000-square-foot, family-owned restaurant will “open slowly and just for dinner at first,” explained owner Barry Terrell. Terrell and his wife Melissa who also own Tookie’s Hamburgers and TBone Tom’s, have seen their share of challenges and headaches during the construction process, which Terrell has described as “inch by inch.” But certainly it’s nothing that fresh Mesquite-cooked Red Snapper can’t cure. Tookie’s Seafood will likely open before the next issue of The SCENE hits the streets. Another impressive, family-owned restaurant being built from the ground up is the multi-venue restaurant Marais in Dickinson – where Benson and Dickinson Bayous - Continued on meet at FM 517. Page 10

Cont. from Page 9 ; Marais, which means bayou in Cajun, will feature elegant French Quarter-inspired architecture and a Gulf Coast casual menu of steaks, fresh seafood, Cajun-inspired dishes, a large selection of shareable appetizers and fusion dishes. The brainchild of Dickinson BBQ owners Keith and Holly Lilley, Marais will be “like nothing anywhere,” explained Keith. “Three bars, four venues, three levels and a wine locker suite. There will be an elevated tree terrace, a 3000-square-foot pirate bar underneath with an exterior bayou-side beer garden with fire pits and games.”

Lilley also explained the venue is “Galveston Bay accessible via Dickinson Bayou.” Despite the recent “unfriendly” construction weather, the plan is for Marais to open this fall.
PUBLISHER & ART DIRECTOR
John Ennis (Co-Founder)
Also opening in Dickinson is the Duo Winery & Cider Co. The locally-owned winery is the passion project of Craig and Raquel Jarmosco and will be an extension of a family winery and vineyard in Michigan. The winery will practically be neighbors with two local breweries (Galactic Coast Brewing and Texas Beer Refinery) and is putting the finishing touches on a beautiful tasting room where wine tastings from a variety of grapes and hard apple ciders will be offered. The space will also be available to rent to celebrate special occasions.
EDITOR & OPERATIONS OFFICER
On the topic of refreshments, Rosewater Clear Lake will be the newest venue to participate in the growing “craft cocktail” movement. Like the recently opened Volcano Room and Preamble Lounge & Craft House, Rosewater Clear Lake will be putting the use of fresh ingredients, homemade mixers, premium liquors, creativity and presentation in priority over speed when it comes to serving liquid yummies. While the craft cocktail movement might be just arriving locally, the craft beer movement is continuing to grow and thrive. In the summer of 2012, when Galactic Coast Brewing started its distribution, it was the only local commercial producer of craft beer and just one of four in the Houston area. Less than four years later, the number of local craft breweries and brewpubs has reached double digits – many times that if including the entire Houston area – thanks in part to the recent openings of Saloon Door Brewing in Webster and Bakfish Brewing in Pearland. Add in Texas Beer Refinery’s recent launch of a separate TBR Taproom down the street from the brewery and at least three more brewpubs in various stages of construction and this area is experiencing a craft beer renaissance. And the news only gets better for beer enthusiasts; thanks to the recent opening of Beers Looking At You and Stuttgarden Tavern Texas City, which both offer a top-notch selection of craft beer.

Another popular theme among many new venues opening locally is “expansion.” We have hyper-local brands such as Scotty’s Pub (Scarsdale and now in South Shore), Grazia Italian Kitchen (Pearland and now in Clear Lake City) and Stuttgarden Tavern (Galveston Island and now in Texas City) opening second locations locally as well as bigger brands (Torchy’s Tacos, Los Cucos, 1000 Degrees Neapolitan and eventually the Tilted Kilt) entering the area for the first time. And the venues mentioned and listed are just the beginning of what has recently opened or in active pursuit of opening.

TEXAS OUTLAW CHALLENGE Turns Clear Lake into a Top High-Performance Boating, Biking & Car Destination
The 9th Annual
TEXAS OUTLAW CHALLENGE: June 22 - 26 National Shootout Championship & Pony Express Run added to this year’s event Texas Outlaw Challenge founder and organizer Paul Robinson has added to his event each year to earn its current status as the biggest of its kind in Texas and one of the top Performance Boating events and destinations nationally. And staying true to form, Robinson is adding the National Shootout Championship which will attract the fastest boats in the country for this Gunfight on Galveston Bay and a $25,000 bounty. Also new this year will be the Pony Express Run for boats under 28 feet -- ski boats, pontoons and jet-skis included -to participate on an inland Clear Lake course. The 9th edition of this event will take place June 22-26 as more than 200 performance boat teams, including 30 of the fastest boats in the country, come to town. No other event attracts the fastest, most beautiful and most expensive high performance boats in U.S. and Canada. They are coming in from coast to coast to be in Clear Lake and feature manufacturers such as MTI, Apache, Cigarette, American Offshore, DCB, Nordic, MTI, Nor-tech, Formula, Sonic, Skater, Velocity, Fountain, Active Thunder, Statement, Outerlimits, Donzi, Baja, Sunsation to name a few. Come out and see amazing performance boats, hear the roar of thunderous horsepower, feel the chills and adrenaline pumping through your veins as you experience powerful performance boats on and off the water. In between all the action on the water, there is plenty for the general public to enjoy including the Street Party in Kemah, bike rallies, a bike giveaway to a veteran, High Horsepower Dock party featuring exotic cars and performance boats and a bikini contest, all organized to support local charities and inhance the Texas Outlaw experience.
Fun On & Off the Water You don’t need a performance boat to enjoy the fun when the Texas Outlaw Challenge speeds into town this month. While the National Shootout Championship and Gunslinger Poker Runs attract the fastest boats from all over the country, there are plenty of other public events for non-boat owners and locals to enjoy. Thursday’s (June 23) free Stampede Street Party will feature performance boat and car displays along the closed streets of Kemah’s Lighthouse District. Other public events include the High Horsepower Dock Party (Fri., June 24 • 7pm-12am) at Sam’s Boat; Miss Outlaw Bikini Contest (Fri., June 24 • 10pm-2am) at Cabo and the Steel Horse Stampede Fun Rally (Sun., June 26 • 11am-2pm) at Jackie’s Brickhouse.
Note: See the center spread map of this magazine for a detailed breakdown of all the public events. See the glossy advertising spread on pages 4 and 5 for more details about the Texas Outlaw Challenge. This event’s economic impact to the community was estimated at $900,000 in 2015. With many local hotels already sold out, a boost to the local economy of more than a million dollars is expected this year.

Did you know the Longhorn, a Texas icon, was almost wiped out of existence? How did this marvelous creature snap back from near extinction? Find out at the Butler Longhorn Museum by joining their 6th Annual Boot Scootin’ Longhorn Social fundraiser, July 16 at the South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference, 2500 South Shore Blvd. in League City.
Sponsorship is provided in three levels; Miss Ceole at $800 with a table of eight and two bottles of champagne; the Miss John Wayne is $2,000 with a table of eight, two bottles of wine and two bottles of champagne; the top sponsorship is the Classic Sponsor for $3,000 and includes four bottles and wine and two bottles of champagne. Smaller packages include Lady Butler for $600 for a table of eight and a table tent with name and a Casino Table sponsor for $100 with signage at casino table. Advanced tickets are $75 each until July 11; thereafter, individual tickets can be purchased for $100 each.
This year’s event will include various entertainment and group activities throughout the evening, including a casino night, live and silent auctions, dancing, live music and dinner. ANTMENT
For most folks, observing breath-taking landscapes and underwater scenes or listening to an ocean’s waves or beholding colorful skies creates a natural serenity. Artist Andy Long paints these enchanting moments making them everlasting. Long is a native of the Pacific Coast and well-travelled. His surroundings continue to inspire much of his art. Long attended the University of Colorado and San Francisco Art Institute; majoring in print. He also studied film at Rice University and lithography at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts School. His talents earned him an independent studies scholarship for mural painting. Long told about the opportunity which took him to Austin to paint a large scale mural on the strip. He also created a realistic desert landscape mural for a meat packing plant in Arizona. He said, “It blended right in with the background.” Long shared he participated in two billboard paintings that were filmed from start to finish as well. Having worked at his own print company and 17 years as a printer for the Houston Chronicle, Long’s printing background is evident in his paintings. - Continued on Page 21

Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre Announces New Plans Forty years into their history, the Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre is about to embark on another exciting chapter. It was announced last week that their rehearsal space will be moved to a new location, while proudly keeping their performance home at the University of Houston at Clear Lake. The new space will provide an ample area for their professional dancers and BAHBT Company members to train and rehearse. In addition to office space, it will also accommodate their vast costume collection, along with a sewing room for design, construction, and fittings. The new rehearsal space is located at 2350 Dickinson Ave. in Dickinson, just off Hwy. 646. The completion date is estimated to be in mid-July. The BAHBT Board of Directors also announced the 2016-2017 Season, aptly named Variances. The first major production will be Dracula, slated for October 14 to 16, 2016. Next will bring The Nutcracker for two weekends in December. A spring performance, entitled Pasión, promises to be a crowd pleaser. Among other events will be the annual Breakfast with the Sugar Plum Fairy on November 19 at the South Shore Harbour Hotel & Resort, as well as a shortened version of last season’s Cinderella to be performed in area schools. The non-profit Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre will have open auditions for dancers from all around the area who are interested in quality, semi-professional dancing and in training with extraordinary teachers. Go to their web site at www.bahbt.org for instructions for video auditions due in mid-May. Other important dates to remember are The Nutcracker auditions on August 20, and the BAHBT Season Kick Off in early September. BAHBT can be contacted via e-mail at office@bahbt.org or by calling 281-480-1617. FEATURED ARTIST:

Continued From Page 19 “The way I paint is mainly like screen printing; laying down yellow, red, blue, black and then lay down other colors or transparents to build up layers in the painting,” explained Long. He added, “It’s very complex. You look up close at all kinds of stuff colliding. You can look at it forever and not get bored with it.” The colors and textures of Long’s works are quite engaging and easily allow the viewer to get lost in the creative depths. Long revealed he doesn’t worry about exact detail as much as he did before. “It takes too much time,” he admitted. Long still uses photo references when needed. “When I want to better remember how water looks washing up on shore to look convincing and real,” he said. According to Long, he manipulates the art to not be too realistic. He disclosed, “It makes it more interesting. Like enhancing colors, especially skies, to maybe

green instead of blue. That’s the beauty of art. You can do whatever you want. There are no rules.” Additionally, Long believes the purpose of art is to control things “by making them look a certain way and provoke a specific feeling.” Long creates his pieces with many mediums though he divulged weather sometimes dictates his medium of choice. He often paints with acrylics in winter and oils in warmer weather. Long declared half the gratification in painting is trying something new and pulling it off. He said, “It gives you the inclination to keep trying.” Long stated, “I have learned something from every piece I’ve crafted. I listen to my heart and work in any medium that the vision dictates.” To view more of Andy Long’s works or for commissions, visit www.AndyLongArt.com or http://flickr.com/photos/andylongart. Summer Sailing Draws Kids to Seabrook! The Bay Access Foundation in cooperation with Lakewood Yacht Club kicks off summertime for the kids with six week-long sailing programs. Tailored for beginners, the program’s mission is to promote youth sailing in the Galveston Bay area for kids aged 7-18. Junior sailors will learn from the experienced team of certified instructors at the Lakewood Yacht Club. The club’s Sailing Director Marek Valasek looks forward to a diverse class of kids this year. "The program is designed for children ages 7 to 18 years of age who have little or no sailing experience. Plus, it’s open to non-club members as well as members." Training will use Optimists for ages 7-12 and Club 420s for ages 13 and up. Participants will be exposed to basic sailing skills, water safety, seamanship best practices, and team building exercises. Beginner sailors in the program also get an inside look as Lakewood organizes its annual race team clinics, which afford racers opportunities to prepare to compete at the Texas Youth Race Week, national championships, and international competitions in Optimist, Laser, and Club 420 classes.

Clear Falls High School Sailing Team Makes History The first ever Texas team has captured the Mallory Trophy in a 1st place win for their area district, SEISA, at the National Championship at the College of Charleston in South Carolina this month. Trained by Bay Access in cooperation with Lakewood Yacht Club, the winning team from Clear Falls High School qualified in April in a two day qualifier in Mississippi to represent the state of Texas at the High School Doublehanded Championship for the Mallory Cup as well as the High School Team Racing Championship for the Baker Cup in Ana Cortes, WA.

The co-ed racing fleet for Division-A was made up of 17-year-old Wiley Rogers and his 18-yearold crewmate Hunter Skinner who dominated both days to pull in a victory overall. Dane Byerly and Laura Masterson partnered with Julia Sheaffer and Bailey Spatz to pull ahead to the finish in Division-B. While the first day of racing brought on a light, westerly breeze, sailing conditions became shifty. As the day progressed, the wind picked up to 15 knots, slowing down most of the teams. But by the end of the day, the Clear Falls team had pushed themselves to a significant lead. Day two saw some of the most difficult conditions with light winds out of the North. The team fought hard to come out on top for the duration of 20 races. After two days of intense sailing, the Clear Falls team finished with a 38-point lead.

keyboards, this Badhouse @ allowed Jeff Scout Bar and Thomas to sing dual lead vocals, the frenzy factor simply breaks the needle as the two have figured out the recipe for delivering relentless waves of hard hitting vocals, song after song after song! Something I’ve yet to see bands even on the national level pull off. About the closest I can come to properly describing it vocally would be having two Ann Wilsons on the stage singing at the same time – which is a dubious description, but one I hope conveys the vocal experience. Back on the desk, Reuben had the sound dialed in superbly that evening and a new light system was brought in for this show with a back lighting projection suitable for NRG stadium. Front filling the band with targeting spot lights would basically be impossible with this band as only Alex Slay ever stays in one place for more than a measure. ’Twas Splendid!!!
Six Gun Sound @ Scout Bar In the audience, I met Alex’s intermediate school music teacher who proudly shared how the younger Alex went to play at a House Of Blues talent search, got “discovered,” and brought back a $5000 grant for the school to buy more guitars. Now is that cool or what? Influenced by Metal, Classic Rock, Blues and Country, they
decided to throw it all together to eventually form Badhouse. Later, they added drummer Jason Garcia to the lineup to fill in the gap. These cats can rock! Put them on your watch list…
To Whom It May @ Scout Bar The Hunger @ Scout Bar
The Hunger started off with “If” – an early electronic cut from their second album, which I’ve never heard them play live before. (Thanks Isaac for the playlist!) After this refreshing throwback, the onslaught commenced. During the show, the band did something that Thomas said has never happened in the history of Scout Bar – they blew a fuse (breaker)! Thinking back on all the acts I’ve seen hosted at Scout Bar and for this to have never happened before, well, there’s your clue on just how powerful the show was! With Richie Hey (Erase The Virus) on

IT’S A WRAP - The month of May clearly went by fast – perhaps too fast! Reports suggest that Houston continues to grow at a rate at which could make us the third largest city in the U.S. which speaks well of our drive and motivation. At the same time, it makes you wonder what the rest of the nation is doing. We have a great local live music environment that allows musicians to get paid for their talents while in certain regions, musicians are charged to play at venues. How bass-ackwards is that?!?!?!? Keep up the good work, support your local music venues who support the musicians who support all of us with what we all need, good local live music! See you out there on The SCENE! Cheers!

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 32 These gladiators come from all walks of life and during the day can be found as teachers, nurses, quality control inspectors, biomedical engineers, graduate students, doctors and lawyers – I haven’t done the math, but my gut feel is that this collective carries an average IQ waaaay above local norms. Seriously! The music at the roller derby was provided by The School of Rock parents, which brought along a nice crowd. A DJ was spinning along too, providing entertainment for timeouts and intermissions. My thoughts was that this game can use something similar to the organist at the baseball diamond playing along with the action, but more along the lines of musician Mike Taylor on metal and a few of his improv jamming buddies. We caught up with Mike and Brad Southside Johnson (two former members of Roller Derby Hobson’s Choice) at Union Tavern in May, these days going by the name of Two Fifths. This duo has been on a song writing adventure reflecting current events and social idiosyncrasies with astutely witty color and a blend of Nirvana, Foo Fighters and Will Rogers. “You know if you’re going to make it, you’re gonna have to write your own songs…” ~ B. Segar to G. Frey. Pre-Memorial Holiday Party – This annual show by The Hunger took it up another level this year. lences go out to the band for their loss. I am pleased to report, the show goes on, not skipping a beat with their massive loyal following getting on a proper dose of feel-good entertainment. I found it interesting as I wandered through the crowd and listened to people in the audience carry on serious discussions about the Spazmatics. They attested to their consistent energy, ability to hit the high notes, reflecting back on prior shows – serious fans indeed! One thing for sure is that good bands are the ones that connect and interact with their audiences for which these guys do consistently well. Speaking of bands that interact well...
Taking the reigns is Angie Emerson of the avant garde; and that evening, I enjoyed sets from the Fentons and Greg Stephens – perhaps one of the best voices coming onto the local scene. Also in May, we took in an evening with Big Tip Todd and Jeremy Kilgore – two leads, two guitars each, two mics, and two congos between the two Big Tip Todd @ Cock-eyed Seagull
for an interesting night of collaborative arrangement. The Seagull with live music, set for summer…. Calibration – Big Tip Todd passed along to me that the Spazmatics had lost their drummer, so it seemed appropriate to check out the new guy. Our condoSpazmatics @ Scout Bar
An Amazing Kind of Grace - In the April issue of The SCENE, I shared my fondness of photographing athletes. Such as those who would preserve obstacles with determination and effort with expression that simply can’t be faked. In May, I was introduced to a local sporting event, the kind that was televised way back in in black and white. This sport is much like hockey needing to be seen live in order to grasp a proper feel for how play develops. Action: Check! Coordinated teamwork: Check! Strategy: Check! Sportsmanship: Chec!. Folks, I discovered “Roller Derby” – Southside Roller Derby to be exact! These folks are local and have been at it in the region so why they weren’t on my radar and on my beat, I’ve no idea – especially as I bumped into several of you readers who were also at the derby. I alluded to these ladies’ grace, strength and agility, but did I Southside mention intelligence? Roller Derby

The New Offenders @ Katie’s
I scored a copy of their album “Stones To Throw,” a hands-on effort taking more than a year what is uniquely “them” in terms of tone, mood and melody. Each of the 12 songs on this album fits within the industry recommended length yet packed with well-woven passages that seem to play on timelessly legitimizing their mastery of composi-
tion and musical skills. The lyrics come across as articulate and direct yet took a while to sink in for me, likely due to my limited perspective. The consensus I gather talking to people in the know is that this local group has a great shot at “making it.” The New Offenders – Check them out where you can, when you can! A Party for Musicians - These are perhaps amongst my favorites and when the invitation came from the Rock Room Studios, I knew I had to check it out. The Rock Room Studios and nextdoor Vixen Tees are an activity hub for musicians by musicians. Other such places that come to mind would be Katie’s, The Oleanders, and Daryl’s House. This village is predominantly loud gritty powerful rock meant to be felt and the entire mood was that of a backstage party and a great place to Rock Room Studios
get the rundown on the local live music nitty-gritty. Our hosts, Chris & Terry Loper – aside from their awesome culinary skills – along with their village of musical friends recently spearheaded the benefit for Joe Palermo a few months ago making this a post benefit reunion of sorts with much joy & good vibes in the air Open Mic @ Cock-eyed with Joe himself at this musical shindig and laying down grooves. Rock Room Studio & Vixen Tees: Check them out! Play on! Cool Hangouts - With summer on its way, a cool hangout is always a good idea. I dropped by the Cock-eyed Seagull where they’ve got perhaps one of the best air conditioners in the area. Beggars Union @ Jackie’s Brickhouse
Home Grown - Bold, brash and bushy which would be a band I caught for the first time, The New Offenders – A perfect band for Blues Bars, Biker Rallies and Country County Fairs. This band is perhaps The New Offenders the only band I know of who's played T-Bone @ Katie’s Jackie’s Brickhouse - Chalk me up as late to the party, I finally got to catch Beggars Union for my first time and gladly confirm what many of you already knew: This is one strong party band that is good to go on any night of any day of the week. Great song list: Check! Good lights: check! Makes you wanna move: Got it! Packs a good crowd: Covered! Musically talented: Holy moly!!! Lead guitarist Lawrence Lusignan (certified Sante Fe authentic) with his low-key, edgy demeanor, scores tens across the board in tone, technicals, and texture – which aside from the dance beat Beggars Union carries along, is what listeners appreciate hearing. What was also interesting that night was while Beggars Union performed on front stage, a meet and greet party was going on at the same time in the back dining room with frontman

Toms, Katie's and Scout Bar reflecting well the band’s character. In the words of Bob Emmons at Katie’s, “This is one well-schooled bunch.” This Southern-rockrooted band also owns quite a following – that evening at the classy little music hall in Bacliff, I sat next to a couple duck hunters who drove more than 90 minutes from Fulshear just for this show – and on a work night to boot! The band features Hunter McKithan (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar), Jason Nelson (Vocals, Bass), Dustin Edwards (Drums), T.Ray Porche (Vocals, Lead Guitar). The State of the Texas Craft Beer scene is growing at a rapid pace. It seems like every other month there is a new brewery opening and that’s in the Houston area alone. I think it’s great that there are people out there that love to craft beers and maybe there will be a new style or two that will become a staple.
How long have you been working at Bakkhus Taverna? I’ve been working here since day 1. So it will be 8 years on August 11.

Greetings, good people! I hope most of you were able to keep dry last month, and if you took in water, may you recover quickly. May went by fast with lots of outdoor activities happening for so many. Memorial Day came and went, kicking off summer. If your family has lost a loved one in the armed forces on our behalf, our sincerest thanks and gratitude goes to you and your family. There are some interesting things happening out on the music SCENE: New collaborations are sprouting up and traditionally strong groups are finding ways of getting better and stronger. May the Fourth Be With You - Last month, we failed to mention a few local musicians who made memories here leaving town and following their paths. Early in May, we stopped by to check out a few of the local home-grown bunch with the School of Rock featured on the Punkstar Full Throttle internet radio show at Scout Bar. This truly “all-age” family fun show coincided with May the Fourth Be With You celebration complete with regalia & dress of Comicpalooza quality. I’ve been loosely following the School of Rock group over the years and quite impressed how far along many have developed. These students demonstrated a stage presence that was very poised and in control – I spotted a few, perhaps, ready to go out gigging now. Pretty cool, eh? - Continued on Page 37 School of Rock @ Scout Bar

No matter what you come for, the music will keep you there a little longer. The energetic mix of rock, reggae, blues and country seems like it could be culled from guests’ iTunes libraries. And the saltwater breeze adds an air of the islands to performances by local artists like Michael Stevens (featured on the cover), Fuzzy Side Up, Wood n Wind, and Dave Nevling. So the next time you feel the need for an island vacation, know that there’s a spot waiting for you in the Parrots Nest palapa bar or the openair patios of Noah’s Ark where their motto is “Your Island Paradise Just Moments Away!”

Late-Night Fun Rises to the Top at Parrots Nest By Jason Goodrich Wanna get away from it all without boarding a southbound plane? There’s a waterfront palapa bar and restaurant down Bacliff way that will transport you from “Ugh!” to “Ahh!” every day and night of the week. Noah’s Ark is a two-story, full-service bar and restaurant located at 4438 Boulevard in Bacliff. The Parrots Nest palapa bar, located on the second floor is a 3800-square-foot open-air palapa bar and adult refuge (21 and up). Locals stop in after work to soak up island vibes and sip refreshing cold drinks. “There is no better place than the Parrots Nest to kick back, relax and unwind,” said Noah’s Ark co-owner Steve Tolhurst. Things heat up Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights with live music. Thursday night is open mic night where eager unknown musicians can showcase their talent. Friday nights are especially electrifying with karaoke in the palapa bar. Tolhurst said the outdoor setting and relaxed, adults-only vibe have made the Parrots Nest a destination for late-night fun seekers in the Bay Area. Besides, he said, “Who wants to be stuck in a smoky club when you can enjoy an open-air palapa bar?”
Parrots Nest Palapa Bar at Noah’s Ark 4438 Boulevard, Bacliff, TX (10 minutes south of Kemah, off of TX 146. Take 646 ’til it ends at the bay, then left)
PARROTS NEST HOURS: Monday through Thursday 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Fair point. If that were all it was – a waterfront palapa bar – it would rank on most locals’ list of go-to entertainment spots. Add to that an exciting music lineup, all-day happy hour Monday through Thursday, and an extensive menu from Noah’s Ark, and you have a recipe for regular visits. Fortunately, you won’t have to save up for months (or even days) to escape to this waterfront get away. During the week, Noah’s Ark well drinks are specially priced at $2.75 and regular beers are $1.75. Appetizers are 2-for-1 from 3 and 6 p.m in the Parrots Nest Monday through Thursday. Tolhurst said Sundays are a very popular day with $2.75 Bloody Marys, Mimosas and Screwdrivers all day! The staff at Noah’s is excited about their new specialty drinks on the menu. Best sellers include the spicy, sweet and salty Jalapeño Margarita and Fresh Minty Mojitos. Longtime customer favorites are the Noah’s Colada and Parrot Head. For the adventurous, try Noah’s Famous Oyster Shooters.
Friday & Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday 10a.m. - 11p.m.
NOAH’S ARK HOURS: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday & Sunday 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.
HAPPY HOUR: Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.
EVENTS: Thursday: Open Mic Friday: Karaoke & live bands Saturday: Live bands
And when it rains at Noah’s Ark (Monday through Thursday), the bartenders really start pouring since well drinks are half price. That’ll bring some sunshine to a cloudy day. Rough weather regulars know this little secret, but - Continued on Page 44 they mostly come for the show.

Overlooked beer classification? Rauchbier (smoked beer)! We are in Texas after all where smoking meats is what we love to do. There needs to be more smoked beer! Favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? I would have to say a road trip to Austin to a beer festival with individuals who shall remain nameless to protect the innocent. Needless to say one of the best times I’ve had and needs to be repeated soon. Bucket list setting in which you would like to enjoy a beer one day? Definitely with the brewers of BrewDog at their brewery in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. They would be awesome to hang out with for a pint or three. - Continued on Page 44

Saturday, June 25: Catch the Supervillains performing. They have been brewing an explosive cocktail of feel good grooves that blend Reggae, Punk, and Funk in a melting pot that has been breaking boundaries for almost a decade. Special guests Refinery Coast – a knock-down, drag-out blend of punk, ska, and Southeast Texas flavorings. From all over Houston, Texas, the members are seasoned and skilled musicians seeking to leave their best on the stage every time they perform, and Refinery Coast is the result.
Wednesday, June 8: León Larregui takes the stage during his Voluma Tour. Mexican born singer and composer of alternative rock, psychedelic rock, spatial rock and indie rock. Thursday, June 16: Upchurch the Redneck & JJ Lawhorn will perform. He is a musician with a thick drawl. "I'm proud of my heritage. I'm proud of where I come from." That sentiment rings true throughout JJ's new single, "Stomping Grounds," which encourages each individual to take pride in what they consider to be their 'stomping grounds.' Saturday, June 19: Kutt Calhoun will perform. He's an underground hardcore rapper from Kansas City, affiliated with Tech N9ne and the independent label Strange Music.
