Malay Malay spins Asian with Tropical Twist By Jason Goodrich Chances are you’ve never had food quite like the cuisine at Malay Malay in League City. It’s high time you changed that. Like Houston, Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. Chinese, Thai and Indian all come together on one menu here. Add a healthy dose of tropical island ingredients like ultra fresh seafood, coconut, pineapple and green mango and you have something uniquely surprising and satisfying. Malay Malay, which opened three months ago, is the second restaurant from the families behind Chinatown’s toprated Mamak (9889 Bellaire Blvd. in Houston). Their new outpost brings Mamak's upscale street-food concept to a south suburban audience. Co-owner April Wang is excited to introduce South Houston to Malaysian cuisine, with its island-fresh flavors. “Malaysian cuisine is different from Chinese and Thai, but it’s familiar at the same time,” she said. “People are delighted to find something new!” Inside, Malay Malay’s airy space shows high style without being pretentious. Rich, natural wood tables and modern, large-format prints make for an inviting environment. To the right of the entrance, the bar area beckons with its warmly lit glass canopy. Behind the long wooden bar, talented mixologists blend creative cocktails like the Red Lotus (Absolut Vodka, Soho Lychee, cranberry and pineapple juices); the Malaysia Mule, which adds color to its kick, thanks to a shot of Midori; and the Malay Malay Bloody Mary, infused with sriracha and soy sauce. Fortunately, the staff also knows when to leave well enough alone. The boozy Mai Thai is made by the book and opens a portal to your happy place in the tropics. For those going for the opposite effect, industrial strength iced coffee and fivetimes brewed iced tea will put a spring in your step. You have been warned. The daily lunch specials are an ideal way to sample representative dishes like pineapple chicken, beef rendang (a chili con carne-like dish) or sweet-spicy mango shrimp. Each selection comes with delicate fried rice, an egg roll and the soup of the day. They offer 23 options for around $8. At both lunch and dinner, the kitchen turns out expertly crafted, gorgeously presented dishes ranging from potent curries and smoky satay skewers to banana leafwrapped barbecue fish and refreshing tropical desserts like coconut custard. Entree prices average around $12.

From countless flickering city-scapes to memorable movie scenes, the iconic glow of neon signs generates more intriguing lighting and mood. The incandescence is so recognizable; many songwriters even include neon in their lyrics. Yet, the craft of neon continues to decline due to the introduction of light-emitting diodes or LED’s. Local artist Chuck Bosone is keeping the lost art of neon alive. He has been blowing and bending glass tubes for neon signs and designs for over two decades. His career in neon began at a small shop in Houston. When it closed, Bosone set up his own shop named 81 Neon in Seabrook in 1988. Bosone’s neon works glow all around the Bay Area from store fronts to private palapas. “My neon’s everywhere,” he said. Bosone explained the process of creating neon. He told he starts with a drawing of the sign lettering or design and pulls the necessary materials. Bosone then places the pattern on a screen. Next, he informed the glass is hand-fired until malleable and bent by hand to follow the pattern. Bosone added, “It’s a true art form.” He said once the tube bending is complete, it’s heated again with 20,000 volts of electricity to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The finished tube is finally sent through a vacuum system to ensure proper function. When the tube reaches a certain temperature it is filled with the gas. Bosone shared there are actually only two colors available. He informed, “Neon is red and argon is blue. The other colors of neon are made of different fluorescents added to a tube before bending.” Because it’s fabricated without filaments or elements, Bosone revealed neon can last 30 to 50 years making it highly economical. Of course, he means with proper care. He advised, “It’s glass with gas. You break the tube and it won’t work.” To affirm the long life of neon, Bosone proclaimed inside his shops hang signs they made their first week in business that still operate. “Everyone loves the final products,” said Bosone. He acknowledged, “It’s a big deal to make something look just as someone imaged it. Whatever you can dream up, you draw it, and we can make it.”

CCEF encourages citizens to dine out for a good cause on Monday, October 3. The process is simple: Patrons enjoy a meal at a participating restaurant, and restaurant proprietors donate a portion of the proceeds to CCEF to support its many programs, including Teacher Innovative Grants, National Board Teacher Certification, Clear Horizons Early College High School and Technology Education Labs. Participating restaurants as of press time include Angelo’s Pizza & Pasta, The Aquarium, Bubba’s Shrimp Palace (2 locations), Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack, Double Dave’s PizzaWorks, Floyd’s Cajun Seafood House, Fuddruckers (Both CCISD Locations), Gatti’s Pizza, Ichibon Japanese Steakhouse, Jersey Mike’s Subs (3 locations), Jinya Ramen Bar, La Brisa on the Creek (2 locations), Longhorn Steakhouse, Luby’s (Both CCISD Locations), Luigi’s, Luna’s Mexican Restaurant (2 locations), Malay Malay Malaysian Restaurant, Mediterraneo Café & Pizza, Mediterraneo Market & Cafe, NAM Noodles and More, Noodles & Company, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Opus Bistro, Pei Wei, Red River BBQ & Grill, San Lorenzo’s (3 locations), Saltgrass – Kemah Boardwalk, Skipper’s, South Shore Grille, Tommy’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar and Zoe’s Kitchen. Demonstrating our support of the district by donating a portion of proceeds on one day is a great way to support educational excellence.” It’s not too late for restaurants to sign up! Please contact Kaci Hanson at kahanson@clearcreekeducationfoundation.org or 281284-0031 by July 15 to help CCEF reach their goal of 50 partici-

Lakewood Team USA Wins the Marco Rissotti Trophy Lakewood Yacht Club's youth sailing Red Team celebrates a first-place victory at the Trofeo Marco Rissotti Regatta in Venice, Italy. After three days of intense racing, the US team earned top honors on the podium.

Lakewood Red was one of three teams to represent the United States at this prestigious event, competing with 23 teams from four continents. Winning the pivotal USODA Team Race Midwinter Championship this past January earned Lakewood Red the first slot at the Marco Rizzotti Regatta.

HOUSTON YACHT CLUB 281-471-1255

Lakewood Red dominated the race course on day 1 of racing, winning all of their races that day. Light winds and heavy storms postponed racing on day 2. By day 3, conditions improved enough for Lakewood Red to take the lead, losing only one of their races to hold on for the win. Venetian Race Committee Chair Dodi Villani spoke highly of the US teams and their sportsmanship both on and off the race course. "The US teams showed themselves to be very determined and decided in the race. They're highly trained athletes who are diligent at sea and showed great understanding and fellowship." Marco Rizzotti, a lifetime resident of Venice, initiated the youth racing event 30 years ago. Over time, the event has become arguably the most prestigious international team race competition in the Optimist class. This year’s regatta was the largest ever, featuring sailors on 23 teams from 10 countries. Red Team member Dutch Byerly enjoyed his first trip to Italy. "We stayed in a marina with lots of waterparks right on the beach. My favorite part was getting to bike around the city with the team."

J-Fest Southwest Regatta Oct. 29-30 • Galveston Bay

Byerly and winning teammates Zane Rogers, Paul Houston, Yumi Yosiyashu, and Michael Burns brought home the Venice Optimist International Cup, on loan from Italy. Lakewood's Blue team, crewed by Kelly Bates, Noah Zittrer, Cade Morrel, Parker Tyson, and Tony Slowik, brought home the Fair Play Award for best sportsmanship on the water. Topping out at over 100 sailors, Lakewood's Youth Sailing Program trains athletes who sail in the Opti, Laser, and FJ classes. This year, the program looks forward to coaching in the 420 class as current Opti sailors outgrow their boats. Directed by Olympic competitor Marek Valasek, the Lakewood sailing team enjoys coaching expertise from international competitors as well as winners of top-ranking national regattas. Program opportunities are available for youth aged six and older. For information about Lakewood's Youth Sailing Program, contact Marek Valasek at SailingDirector @lakewoodyachtclub.com. LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 31 TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE - It’s at Scout Bar, where loud and powerful are the norm. Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Robby Krieger is on stage and one could almost hear a pin drop… I’ve NEVER seen a Scout Bar audience this way before, but then again, Scout Bar patrons always knew their music. Krieger, on his 2016 North American Tour, rolled into town traveling with his son Waylon fronting the part of Jim Morrison and a road crew appearing bona-fide from the ’60s. The entire evening, Krieger graciously shared up close and personal displays of his playing skills, rarely carrying the melody of the song, rather interweaving with the other band mates into a collective rhythm and tone that was the song. Readers and fans of The Doors likely have been to Krieger’s website and already read their more eloquent description, “We just combined the Apollonian and the Dionysian. The Dionysian side is Robby Kreiger @ Scout Bar the blues, and the Apollonian side is classical music. The proper artist combines Apollonian rigor and correctness with Dionysian frenzy, passion and excitement. You blend those two together, and you have the complete, whole artist.” Opening this evening was Rainchild, with Dustin Condon setting the crowd into proper mood. With solid shows year in and year out, Rainchild was the perfect band for this opening appearance. Krieger and his band played an honest ten-song set plus an encore run of four, that pretty well covered everybody’s favorite. Rainchild @ Scout Bar

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 32 ON TO NIGHTBIRD - Jackie’s Brickhouse is an interesting place to bring tribute bands as not all of the great bands over the decades were exclusively for dancing but also fed intellect. Over the years, Jackie’s has hosted tribute bands for Heart, The Beatles, The Eagles and in June for the first time in our area, a Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac tribute group, Nightbird – a blend of dance and intellect appeal from the pop era of Fleetwood Mac. Members of Nightbird include: Brooke Alyson (who works Nightbird @ Jackie’s Brickhouse with Jill Focke, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac's wardrobe manager) as “Stevie Nicks.” Paul Hatton (Local chiropractor at Rasa Yoga who understands placing oneself in other dimensions) as “Lindsey” - Guitar/Vocals. Wolff DeLong - Bass/Vocals/Percussion Kelli Thompson (uber talented musician/teacher that we need to hire down in our local school district) as “Christine” - Keyboards/Vocals/Percussion/Acoustic Guitar Danny Shudra - Drums. Andy and The Dreamsicles @ Alzheimers Fundraiser Over the years, the Dreamsicles have evolved their playing almost sort of like how Pink Floyd did after Syd Barrett with David Gilmour, structured and solid. The Dreamsicles are always adding songs to the play list that are sophisticated, legitimate, familiar, fun and rarely heard live these days. With the Olympics coming soon, a familiar term comes to mind of the concert Tens across the board…. CATCHING UP - When Crazy Alan opened up his Swamp Shack, one of the first musicians hired to play there was David Schwope. In June, a follow up visit was in order. The last time we covered a David Schwope show was at his 60th birthday party. Despite being eligible to retire, Schwope hasn’t rested on his laurels including opening for Jerry Lee Lewis and Rusty Weir along with gigs of yesteryear at the Balinese Ballroom. Rather instead, he opts to keep busy with his remodeling business and a steady calendar of gigs – wise man… One gig that David David Schwope mentions is sitting @ Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack in with the Mike Stevens Band in what he describes as The Wizards of Aaaahs (cool name). This is one I’ve put on my watch list. Recently, Schwope has livened up his show with the addition of a Taylor T5 12-String from Danny’s Guitar Hacienda which is one of the cooler models in recent history – and the only one I’ve ever seen gigging these days. If it’s been awhile since you’ve caught a David Schwope act, you can find his full schedule and more about his music at his website. Oh, the food at the Swamp Shack? May I suggest one of their mixed boils? Great stuff! (www.davidschwope.com)

FOLLOW UPS Klocks @ Jackie’s A few months ago Brickhouse The SCENE covered two groups that left such a favorable impression, follow-ups were warranted. And so in June, when the schedule at Jackie’s Brickhouse included The Klocks and Nightbird, we knew we had to stop by. First up were The Klocks, a killer cover band from the San Antonio/Boerne region. This band has been playing for over 18 years, which seems to create a solid fan base wherever they play, and a well-rounded list of music including today’s current hits all the way through to the ’70s, plus rap, country, Latin and more. Speaking of more, The Klocks clearly reinvest back into the band, packing along one super killer stage light system, state-of-the-art P.A. system and video, making their shows a complete road ready package. Aside from their spiffy visual presentation, the pure Gibb Brothers’ vocal quality of front man Brent Fields provides an entertainment experience like none in the area.

Hourglass @ Cock-eyed Seagull NOS - Is an abbreviation for New Old Stock, a term often used by guitar players on their relentless search for vintage tubes still in their original packaging, installed into modern day amplifiers, to achieve the ultimate nirvana known as “Tone.” Still in their original packaging, the Hourglass Trio of Kevin Fenton, Claudia Hammond & Greg Stephens have embarked on a mission to reacquire the Tone of yesteryear amidst what is known as vocal harmonies – the stuff that makes your spine tingle... At the Cock-eyed Seagull in June, we got to check out the progress on their mission and are pleased to report good progress on a wide variety of classic covers, rejuvenated and returning to life heard live. No doubt, this will be a continued work in progress, and I’m looking forward to hearing more of this down the road. Check out the annual The Hourglass Band’s Monster Birthday Bash with Mark Fenton on Saturday, July 16 at the Seagull! THE LONGEST DAY - It’s no secret I’m fond of benefit/memorial-type gatherings, where the music often drifts into magical territory, and in June, I had that privilege again. There were a couple of Dreamsicles fans who used to come hear Andy and The Dreamsicles at La Brisa, Patsy and Carl. They heard the band all the time and loved them. Patsy, died of Alzheimer's last January. Her daughter Michelle and husband Brent hired the band to play a concert for anybody who wanted to go and have a good time in her memory with proceeds donated to the Alzheimer's society. As for the concert, the courtyard venue was perfect with tall hard walls and a bricked terrace creating a sonic heaven that music craves - A natural large ambience with clarity on the order of Red Rocks. This evening, The Dreamsicles along with the Kick Ass Brass sported a six-piece vocal line, instruments out the wazoo, musical spectrum spanning five decades and even pulled off Beach Boys crisply, something you don’t often hear live.

Latin Artists @ Scout Bar Continued From Page 48 This international following in conjunction with the support and respect of prominent local bands has helped to reinforce an already solid path to bring groups like Los Pericos to Houston for such highly successful shows. Roland Belmarez – a promoter for Scout Bar who, along with venue owner Thomas Wilson has been chiefly responsible for bringing some of the most established names in the Latin music industry to the Clear Lake stage – was quick to point out that Los Skarnales, among other revered rock en español bands such as La Sien (some of whose members were also in attendance, singing the praises of Los Pericos), continue to be a great part of the reason why even more Latin artists have been brought to Houston and to Scout Bar in particular. “What you are experiencing is because of them,” Belmarez said, though both he and Wilson (also a musician in his own right as member of industrial rock band The Hunger) are credited as well for bringing renowned international artists such as Spain’s Jarabe de Palo and Cuba’s legendary band Los Van Van over the past two years. A momentous precedent would set this exciting trend in motion, however. Mexico’s preeminent alternative rock and hip hop band Molotov was the first of many successful shows to come. “We took a chance [on Molotov] in a rock venue in Clear Lake, and it worked amazingly. We started pursuing other artists, and felt that Houston was lacking Latin artists and venues that were booking them. So here we are today, booking Latin Grammy nominees and winners like Natalia Lafourcade and Los Pericos, and it is working great,” Belmarez said. The packed house during Los Pericos last month was no exception, even drawing in hard rock/rap/metal band Saliva drummer Paul Crosby, who as a first-time attendee of Los Pericos was extremely impressed by the band, noting that their music transcends any assumed language barrier. “They are incredible. You don’t need to know Spanish to know this is amazing,” said Crosby. Indeed, the tireless, high-energy set of more than two hours of Los Pericos’ biggest hits, including “Runaway,” a hit they also recorded later with the original Wailers, kept the crowd on its feet in English and in Spanish, with an overwhelming vow of approval as they shouted, “¡Otra! ¡Otra! ¡Otra!,” for just “One more song!” when it appeared that they would close for the night. The band complied with the hundreds of excited fans present, and another successful Latin show in Clear Lake – on a weeknight nonetheless – concluded to the sounds of overwhelming whistles, yelling, and resounding applause. Next up at Scout Bar will be alternative metal/rock/pop star Mon Laferte, a highly-acclaimed contemporary singer-songwriter from Chile who has performed for crowds of tens of thousands around the world, garnering widespread international attention with her vocals, and particularly her masterful talent on a variety of instruments including guitar, drums, piano, and harmonica. As of press time, Laferte’s show is scheduled for November 13, though several other well-known Latin artists and exciting shows will be confirmed in the coming weeks. LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 37 Not every band in the area is suited for this type of venue, but not to worry, Rat Ranch is a perfect band for this event, and they were in full command of the music the entire evening. Also in command were Rat Ranch fans that filled the courtyard. These fans are perhaps some of the hardiest people on this planet. Catching my muse, I spotted a few young people in the audience of the intermediate school age (our future replacements) wearing Rat Ranch merchandise – a favorable sign the music connected with those that matter, providing hope that rock will truly live on. Viva! PALAPA COUNTRY - In June, we stopped in at T-Bone Tom’s catching The Slags and Sheila Marshall @ T-bone Tom’s

Sheila Marshall on the Landshark stage. The Slags have been often mentioned here in the SCENE and were putting on their usual high-octane show. Sheila has changed considerably, since we last covered her prior to her Nashville venture, shedding her high pitch young country singing for a deeper powerful Melissa Etheridge vocal style. Lyrically, we’ll do a follow up to see if the content has also matured this Nashville transformation. To be continued…

FRENCH RODEO & 128TH NOTES - This year, we missed catching up with Chad Ware at the annual Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. He usually serenades the wine-drinking crowds. We first caught this talented singer Chad songwriter and guitar Ware @ player at the first GBAMA Katie’s IkeFest where he was handling lead guitar duties for headliner, Perfect Stranger and enjoyed follow-ups over the years. When we saw him in June at Katie’s (the area’s place to enjoy great local live music up close and personal), he

was matter of factly playing what I believe were 1/128th notes, not in the machine gunning way metal shredders do, but with melodic arpeggio accuracy, which -- my friends -- is rare to hear live. We got to hear his original “She Likes The Way My Guitar Sounds” live for the first time, mentioned in the Valentine's issue of The SCENE a couple years ago, which in my humble opinion, has the hooks to make it onto Billboard. Chad is one of those crazy gifted musicians. He started playing guitar at age 10, and by his early 20s was making a name for himself in the Houston area as a lead guitar player. Aside from playing the clubs, he’s played with Rick Trevino, opened for Ronnie Milsap, had a live KPFT broadcast and plays Christmas music at Moody Gardens Festival of Lights. Oh, and as to why we missed Chad at the HLSR? Chad and the band have been busy recently playing at the Equiblues Rodeo/Festival in Saint Agrève France which probably one of the coolest reasons I could imagine. LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 39 PUNKSTAR FULL THROTTLE UPDATE - After May’s family evening, the June show went waaaay to the other corner with a slant on death punk, alternative and black metal. The skill set amongst the three groups there that night was widespread ranging from world touring members forming up Wulfskol, the 18 month old experimental Frank Zappa Metal by Sift Through the Ashes -- a young group that put on a show of mic eating. Also that night was a local concoction of Astoryia - described as the Five Thieves of musicians wanting to “play something different.” We weren’t able to stick around for their midnight stage time and will follow up with them again later. My scorecard? Wulfskol came this evening showing all they definitely could play and once they finish their projects in work with Mike BBQ, Astoryia should interviewed by be good to go on Punkstar Full the Throttle @ Opening Scout Bar Act call list. Remember bands, if you get an invitation to come play at the Punkstar Full Throttle Radio, you’ll have some mic time with an international audience, so make it good! OLYMPIC TRAINING - With the Olympics coming up in Brazil, local festive fans may wish to consider a training routine that includes Rock the Dock, the annual summer tradition on the Boardwalk. In June, we dropped in to catch a full courtyard and Rat Ranch on the stage. This is an ideal event for the hardiest of people in the area - The tall construction that blocks native natural breezes combined with the high content of brick and cement which holds heat great in the winter makes for awesome sound and festive atmosphere Think upcoming Brazilian Olympic street parties!!! Summer arrived in a most interesting way this year: In 2016, the Strawberry Moon coincided with the June Solstice. These two events haven’t occurred on the same day since 1967 and will not coincide again until 2062. If that wasn’t cool enough, that night, we happened to take in perhaps the best first impression ever at the newly opened Tookie’s Seafood. Now that, good people, qualifies as a Seabrook magical moment. I’m pretty sure many of you took in some magical moments around the area. June was a good month with live music, too! Let’s run down some of what all went down.

by Andy

NEW STOP ON THE BEAT - The SCENE has a new stop on the beat which would be Aspens Bar & Grill in Clear Lake Shores. One cool thing about this place is that on Friday nights, you can catch a live band (we heard Tomz Katz from Galveston for the first time), watch the Astros (and likely some Olympics soon) on the tube, relax and enjoy great service with the super friendly Aspens’ staff, and see the Kemah fireworks all from one seat! Don’t let all the golf carts in the parking lot run you off as there’s plenty of parking. Aspens has great a/c and comfortable seating which is very important this time of year and makes me wonder who goes to the food truck court this time of year? BACK ON THE BEAT - And that would be The Tree House where we Tomz Katz @ Apsens stopped in for the 25th Anniversary festive gathering. A little refresher: Back when Ike blew into town, The Tree House served as the 'round-the-clock gathering spot for the first responders never losing power the entire time, making this a cool solid designated hang25th Anniversary Party @ Tree House out. Word is also that The Tree House was a favorite of my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt who had sooooo many places to chose from. The patrons here are truly neighborly, spanning the entire 25 years and came for the celebration the entire day. A fantastic BBQ spread and musical entertainment was provided through the entire day. Hopefully, we can skip the hurricanes this year, but stop by The Tree House and hang out awhile anyway. Congrats to all at The Tree House! - Continued on Page 37

JULY 2016

Scotty’s Pub on the Bay drops anchor in South Shore By Tanisha Hicks Scotty’s Pub on the Bay sailed into South Shore Harbour in early June and is already making quite a splash. Their convenient location (3202 Marina Bay Drive in Kemah) makes it easy for guests to cruise in for exceptional service, unique drink menu and fun daily specials. The South Shore Harbour location is the second Scotty’s Pub to open. In 2011, Scott Sexton III, Scott Sexton Jr., Craig Sexton and Greg Castro opened the original Scotty’s Pub, a friendly neighborhood bar located at 10943 Scarsdale. The pub was a long-time dream of all the owners, and they still take an active part in the day-to-day work of the bar. Scott III credits the Scarsdale staff for enabling him, Scott Jr. and Quinton Turner (long-time manager of the Scarsdale pub) to open Scotty’s Pub on the Bay in June. “Our staff helped us get where we are today,” making the South Shore location a reality. Scotty’s Pub on the Bay reflects the successful menu and hybrid bar concept (part nightclub and part pub) that was perfected at Scotty’s Pub on Scarsdale over the last five years. Scotty’s owners continue to partner with their friendly and knowledgeable employees to provide a “whiskey-heavy, craft beer-centric, foodie haven.” When the idea to open a new pub was first tossed around, the guys knew they wanted to drop anchor in South Shore. They wanted to be near the water, and they knew the people in the area “love to party and are good people, nice and well-mannered.” As the work on the new pub was taking place, they made it a point to have lunch and dinner at locally owned restaurants and shopped close by to support their new neighbors throughout the build. It was immediately obvious that there were many creative residents with knowledge and appreciation of good food. For three culinary experts, this was perfect. All three of the founders studied culinary arts – and Scott III continues to teach culinary classes in Houston.

WHO IS SCOTTY? Chef Scott Sexton began his career in the service industry at the age of 18. He immediately knew that showing people a good time was his passion. He worked his way through college waiting tables, bartending and even cooking at bars and restaurants around Houston. After earning a Bachelors in Music from the University of Houston, Scotty never stopped learning and went on to get a degree in Culinary Arts and a Level 2 Sommelier Certification from ISG. He now teaches culinary arts at Houston Community College in addition to helping manage both Scotty’s Pubs. In April 2011 Scotty joined forces with his father (Scott Sr.), Craig Sexton and Greg Castro to open Scotty’s Pub on Scarsdale. The Pub was a long time dream of all the owners to open a place of their own. Now they have two.

In the near future, the kitchen will open at Scotty’s Pub on the Bay. Be on the lookout for daily chef-inspired specials. Just like at the Scarsdale location, the chef will prepare a limited amount of plates every day, featuring new and fresh ideas. Favorites expected on the menu include Scottish Eggs, Sober Sticks (locally made spicy pork tamales, breaded and deep fried, served with queso), Jerky Bird and Los Tacos (beer-batter fried shrimp with pineapple preserves, pico and awesome sauce).

Personally, the fact I can now eat almost anywhere and expect to be offered a selection of solid Houston, Texas, and national craft beers to enjoy with a meal is the biggest and most positive change. Often an option from more local than Houston will be among the handful of options. In 2016, craft beer on the menu at any venue is a given and no longer a plus.

Then there is the Tap Wall “Arms Race” with venues taking their commitment to craft to another level. To follow are some of the biggest and best tap walls full of craft beer in the area:

* Gordon Street Tavern only fills Growlers of their in-house beer (beer they brewed on-site) due to TABC law. ** J Henry’s has a Growler Fill Drive Thru for your convenience. Three additional venues with draft beer selections worth mentioning are Bakkhus Taverna (605 6th St., Kemah); Bar 36 inside of Dickinson BBQ Company ( 2111 Fm 517 Rd. E, Dickinson) and the recently expanded Dan’s Pizza Company (15148 Hwy. 3, Webster). While none of these three venues have close to 40 or 50 taps like many of those listed above, they do have at least a dozen. And more important is how they use those taps and the commitment to local and independent craft they demonstrate. For example, Dickinson BBQ may only have 12 taps. But the fact that it takes seven or more different sources including multiple beer distributors and many small, independent self-distributing breweries to fill those 12 taps shows more commitment and deserves more credit than a bar with 50 taps that uses only two or three sources to fill them.

How long have you been a bartender + How long at Skallywag? I have been a bartender for 14 years with a few years break. I have been at Skallywag for a little over a year, and it has been by far my favorite bar I've worked at. I have learned a lot about craft beer and working with this staff has been amazing! We are like a little family!

Signature Bloody Mary

SUDS & GRUB

YOUR favorite day of the week to work? My favorite day to work at Skallywag is Sunday – industry night, when I get oneon-one time with a lot of my regulars and friends. Plus, it’s usually an interesting night. Top 3 drinks you recommend to customers at Skallywag: Always beer! Usually something local like Galactic – which is a top seller, or TBR. I also like recommending one of our house Bloody Marys made with our infused vodka. Do you have a Signature drink? Through the years I've been known for making a shot called The Venus Fly Trap – something I made up years ago while I was competing in flair. (Fly was my nickname). I'm also known for my Bloody Marys. I feel like I make them well because it's something I drink, and I'm pretty picky about them.

What’s the most amusing or weird question you have ever been asked by a customer? Most people ask about my tattoos and what they mean to me. Favorite thing about the Bay Area? I like being near water!

Where: 10943 Scarsdale Blvd. When: Everyday 4-8pm What: $2.50 Domestic Beer & Well Drinks. $3 Wines. Fireball always $4. Ask about daily specials.

Are there any new drinks you're excited about? I am always excited to try something new, especially good beer! I got the chance to try The Enchanted Rock peach vodka last week, and I really liked that!

What do you love about bartending? I love that while I've been a bartender I’ve met so many great people. Some have become very close friends and some even like family.

Where: 10943 Scarsdale Blvd. When: Everyday 4-8pm What: $2.50 Domestic Beer & Well Drinks. $3 Wines. Fireball always $4. Ask about daily specials.

What do you do when not at work? When I’m not at work, I'm usually at dance competitions with my daughter, reading, taking photographs, traveling and spending time with my family.

What motivates you? What has motivated me for many years now is my daughter Madi. It's important to me for her to see that hard work pays off. And that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it and work hard for it!

Oye, Houston:

Scout Bar

Draws Internationally-Renowned Latin Artists By Sarah Piña An electric crowd of hundreds excitedly milled around Clear Lake’s premier rock venue on a warm Monday evening in June as they waited for the night’s act to begin. When Scout Bar was established in 2004, it quickly made a name for itself as a hub that drew in some of the music industry’s biggest names in the genre. As Los Pericos, the definitive reggaerock-ska band from Argentina hit the stage on June 27, however, it was further proof that in the past couple of years, this venue has also garnered recognition as a home in Houston for the world’s leading Latin acts. Despite having lost the coveted Copa América soccer title the day before to Chile, masses of those with Argentinean roots and those with childhood nostalgia of the band turned out in force, dancing, jumping, and singing every word to hits they had grown up with—songs that hooked and influenced even the most well-known local musicians on the Latin music scene in Houston as kids.

“These guys are history. Growing up in Houston, they are one of the first reggae bands I heard in Spanish,” noted Nestor “El Tiburón” Aguilar, member of Los Skarnales, a fixture of the Texas music scene that has been around for over two decades with their own fusion of ska, reggae, cumbia, rockabilly, and punk.

Lauren Cohen Live Concert Photography

Indeed, Los Pericos hold many firsts and accomplishments for the reggae genre that have earned them international acclaim, and in turn have become highly influential for many. Though the six-member group – who began in the late 1980s as a group of friends covering reggae greats such as Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley, and Peter Tosh – has changed greatly over the years, perhaps more notably so with the departure of their beloved original vocalist, “El Bahiano,” in 2004— they have maintained a strong fan base with their blend of ska, rock, and reggae that still brings them on international tours, playing to crowds of hundreds of thousands throughout South America and all over the world. Of their 16-plus albums to date – many of which have gone gold, triple, and quadruple platinum – the band also owns the distinct honors of being personally invited by Rita Marley, widow of Bob Marley, to record in his former studio in Kingston, Jamaica, as well as the only Latin American band invited to participate in a tribute to The Police. The reggae rock group also gained notoriety with North American audiences when renowned travel host, chef and writer Anthony Bourdain featured them on an episode of his then-show No Reservations.
