Mediterraneo launches satellite location near Clear Lake High School By Jason Goodrich It was prom season when Mediterraneo Café & Pizza opened on Falcon Pass, just a stone’s throw from Clear Lake High School. But you could call it a homecoming for Magdy and Sonia Kotb, who also run Nassau Bay’s Mediterraneo Market & Cafe. Ever since the couple’s two daughters attended CLHS more than 20 years ago, the couple has supported student activities personally and through group sponsorships via their restaurant. With the new satellite location, the Kotbs are diving back into campus life. And this time, they brought pizza. It’s a savvy move, with thousands of hungry students just up the street, including the University of Houston – Clear Lake. It’s also good news for the other half of town, where many friends and fans of the existing location live. Not only is Mediterraneo’s timetested menu and neighborly vibe available around the corner now, but also their handmade Mediterranean-style pizza is a phone call or click away. What’s the key to Mediterraneo’s 17-year-long success? “We serve what we eat,” said coowner Magdy Kotb. “It’s not a commercial thing. It’s happy, homemade food.”

Mediterraneo Market & Café

You could also add “prepared 18033 Upper Bay Rd. with care and a bit of flair.” For Nassau Bay • 281-333-3180 example, in pizzas, you can order a straightforward Margherita with fresh mozzarella and fresh basil. On the other end of the spectrum, the Shredded Beef and BBQ pizza satisfies those Texan taste buds. Other Mediterranean staples such as kebabs, spanakopita, dolmas, falafel, hummus and baba ghanoug are rendered expertly and with style whether at lunch or dinner. American-style sandwich standouts include the halfpound hamburger and Tuna Melt Panini. Prices are modest. Choose from appetizers, salads, pasta or Moussaka. Don’t forget dessert! Choose from tiramisu, flaky baklava or Sonia's signature chocolate tart with almond crust.

That warmth and honesty flows from the kitchen, through the dining room and out the front doors at both locations. On Falcon Pass, an ingeniously designed leafy outdoor space makes dining or sipping a beverage a pleasure year-round. Kotb said he hopes to receive their beer and wine license for the new location by Labor Day. - Continued on Page 12

Dine Out and Do Good! Houston Restaurant Weeks benefiting the Houston Food Bank has started Houston Restaurant Weeks, the single largest fundraiser in the United States benefiting the largest food bank in America, started August 1st and runs through Labor Day, September 5th. Last year’s event raised a record breaking $1.9 million for the Houston Food Bank. A total of 261 restaurants are participating. Founded in 2003, Houston Restaurant Weeks has raised over $7.6 million for the Houston Food Bank. This has enabled the Food Bank to provide almost 23 million meals for Houstonians who are food insecure. As America’s largest and nationally recognized as Feeding America’s Food Bank of the Year, the Food Bank distributes 59 million nutritious meals through its network of 600 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other hunger relief charities in southeast Texas, feeding 800,000 individuals each year. Houston Restaurant Weeks is run by volunteers and 100 percent of the donations raised from area restaurants go directly to the Food Bank. For 36 days, diners will enjoy specially priced multi-course prix-fixe menus. Since July 15, 2016 the names of participating restaurants have been available at houstonrestaurantweeks.com – with others added up until August 1. From fine dining to casual neighborhood restaurants, patrons are able to sample a wide variety of cuisines during this month. Reservations may be required by some restaurants. Walk-ins may be accepted by others. This information will be noted on the HRW website menu pages. Participating restaurants make donations to the Food Bank based upon their HRW sales.

The cosplay craze is seemingly everywhere. Cosplay is the short form of costume play. Local artist Annie Kelley Davis believes films based on comic books propelled cosplay’s popularity into the mainstream. For Davis, “Cosplay is another way to express my art and creativity.” She added she saw the inventiveness of cosplay and “can go anywhere with it.”

racters to Life

As a child, Davis began her art path with pencil and charcoal drawings. Davis’ mother then taught her watercolor. From painting, Davis learned how to sew, quilt, make jewelry, and paint miniatures that require a magnifying glass. Davis told, “I like to go all over the place and get into everything. The natural ability has always been there.” Davis also grew up making her own Halloween costumes. “I love to dress for any occasion, any reason,” she said. Her love of art and dressing up forayed into creating cosplay. Davis declared, “I dress up as a favorite character and bring it to life. It’s the excitement of being someone else for a day.” When designing a costume, Davis explained she first finds items to start with at hobby stores and resale shops. She scours the aisles searching for interesting fabrics such as lace, fur, and leather. Davis admitted, “I’ll buy a shirt just for the cool buttons.” She then alters a piece of clothing by adding to it or taking away from it. Davis thoroughly researches every costume. She emphasized, “It's all in the details. I find out all I can.” Davis informed she creates most details best with paints including fabric, spray, and acrylic paints to “really see the details.” Additionally, she disclosed the incorporation of craft foam to add specific pieces and props to a costume. Davis advised the foam is versatile and light weight to carry around all day. She said, “I make it look like anything even metal weapons. People can't believe the props are made of simple craft foam.” Davis’ cosplay creations are worn at holiday and themedparties, comic cons, board game conventions, and Renaissance fairs. Her finely detailed costumes don’t go unnoticed at any of the events she attends. At conventions, Davis is often pulled aside by professional photographers for free photo sessions. Her clever costumes also make appearances in the local newspapers, TV coverage, and once an onscreen interview for a comic con documentary film. - Continued on Page 23

Galveston Heritage Festival adds Sacred Places Tour

ARTS

By Domino Taylor

Learn more about the early days of immigration through the Port of Galveston at Galveston Historical Foundation’s 2nd Annual Galveston Heritage Festival on August 6. Enjoy music, food and entertainment from numerous cultural groups and organizations throughout Texas with activities held throughout the day at historic Kempner Park, 27th and Avenue O. This year’s event added a Sacred Places Tour, featuring five area churches. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.galvestonhistory.org/heritagefestival. Combo tickets for both the Heritage Festival and Sacred Places Tour are $20 for adults, $18 for youth ages 6-12 and free for children 5 and under. The event is from 10:00 am to 8:00 p.m.

The event will be set in historic Kempner Park and the c.1880 Garten Verein pavilion, and feature a Karbach Brewing Company craft beer garden, live entertainment on an outdoor stage as well as lectures and exhibits inside the 1880 Garten Verein. Additionally, descendants of immigrants who came through the Port of Galveston from the early 1800s to the mid20th century will be on hand throughout the park, sharing their cultural heritage through vendor tents, exhibits and more. The popular Sacred Places Tour benefits GHF’s ongoing restoration of St. Joseph’s Church, the oldest wooden church in Galveston and the oldest German Catholic church in Texas. A wide range of religious traditions and building styles will be featured, highlighting the island’s rich religious heritage while showcasing the depth and range of Galveston’s sacred architecture.

“The festival is our time to celebrate the thousands of families that came into the Port of Galveston from around the world,” explains Dwayne Jones, GHF Executive Director. “We will recognize the many cultures that made the island an international center in the 19th and 20th centuries.”

“Galveston’s Sacred Places are a significant part of our history. When you tour these great buildings you can learn the story of some of the lives of generations of Galvestonians,” states Jones. “This tour is a glimpse into our past and one that will broaden your idea of what living on the island is really like.” Churches included on this year’s tour are; Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Saint Augustine of Hippo Episcopal Church, St. Joseph’s German Catholic Church, Swedish Zion Lutheran Church (Christ Chapel), and St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica.

The Galveston Heritage Festival will highlight the bold vision and contributions these groups have made to Galveston history.

The festival will host numerous lectures and entertainers throughout the day. Lectures include discussions on Galveston’s Immigration Station, German Texas Public Buildings and Painted Churches, Czech and Wendish heritage, genealogy research and more. Live entertainment and special presentations will also be held throughout the day on the festival’s outdoor stage with performances by The TubaMeisters, Revels Houston, Enzian Baum, cultural dance groups, The Auf Gehts, and more and will conclude with a special performance inside the 1880 Garten Verein by noted Czech polka band Mark Halata and Texavia from 6 to 8 p.m. Another new addition to this year’s festival is an opportunity to record their own heritage as part of the StoryCorps.me program. This program was created as a global platform for listening, connecting, and sharing stories of the human experience. The finished product will be uploaded to the StoryCorps.me website and to the American Folklife collection in the Library of Congress. Specially selected from Galveston Historical Foundation’s Preservation Resource Center, 10 large format images will be displayed throughout Kempner Park. These photos, many of which have never been publicly viewed, showcase Galveston’s incredible immigration history. - Continued on Page 21

AIA Sandcastle Competition Rescheduled for August 20 By Domino Taylor For those of you who thought you missed all the great sand art on Galveston beach because of rain, the Sandcastle Competition has been rescheduled for Saturday, August 20. This is the 30th Annual AIA Sandcastle Competition on East Beach in Galveston. Plan on lots of fun and many photos ops for the photographers. It is open to the public at 9:00 a.m. and the Awards Ceremony is at 4:30 p.m., with the sand art staying thru until the next day. The AIA SandCastle Competition is a fund-raising event for AIA Houston and ArCH Foundation as well as one of the top five revenue generating events for the City of Galveston. This year over 60 teams have their eyes and shovels set on winning the prestigious Golden Bucket Award. Firms begin months in advance generating ideas, developing designs, and assigning duties. On the day of the event the teams, stretched along the beach front, meticulously sculpt their piles of sand and work non-stop for five hours. The judging of the sculptures is rated on originality of concept, artistic execution, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site. In addition to the Golden Bucket, awards are given in several categories including Best Traditional Castle, Best Architectural Icon, Kidtastic! - Disney Edition, Best Cinematic, Best Meme and Houston-centric as well as best team t-shirt design, best team signage, best costume, and public favorite. The cost is $10 a car and event goers can bring picnics. East Beach is at 1923 Boddeker in Galveston. The sand art will also be available to view Sunday and maybe even longer. At the end of the day, everyone goes home with memories of a great day at the beach filled with fun, sand, and sun. To register a new team or sponsorship for the event, please contact Rhonda Lowe at rhonda@aiahouston.org or 713-5200155.

Davis recalled her first comic con which she attended with friends. She replicated the Cat Woman, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, and Joker outfits from the original Batman series and said they didn't even get to attend one panel, because they were stopped so often and asked for a photo. “I felt like a celebrity,” proclaimed Davis. She told the story of an older gentleman that requested a photo opportunity with her as Cat Woman. The gentleman shared his fond recollections of the original Batman. Davis said, “I was excited to bring back memories for someone.” She shared, “I love to watch the reactions of people to all my hard work. Cosplay is something I truly enjoy and so fulfilling when it's appreciated. I’m super excited about it.” For more artist information contact Annie Kelley Davis at al.kelley@hotmail.com or 281.832-8828.

Topping out at over 100 sailors, Lakewood's Youth Sailing Program trains athletes who sail in the Opti, Laser, 420, and FJ classes. Directed by Olympic competitor Marek Valasek, the Lakewood sailing team enjoys coaching expertise from international competitors as well as winners of top-ranking national regattas. Program opportunities are available for youth aged six and older. For information about Lakewood's Youth Sailing Program, contact SailingDirector@LakewoodYachtClub.com.

Bay Cup II Draws Racers to Galveston Bay Lakewood Yacht Club will host the annual long-distance Bay Cup II Regatta on August 6. Drawing competitive racers to Trinity Bay and Upper Galveston Bay, the second race in the Bay Cup series tests the limits of navigational skills. The race course challenges sailors with multiple legs that total 15 to 25 nautical miles. Lakewood racer Dwight Bengston appreciates the skill level of the summer regatta. "The Bay Cup II is a distance race around a combination of fixed marks. The idea is to give people multiple points of sail around Galveston and Trinity Bay." Competing vessels will include large keel boats, generally ranging from 30-50 feet. A variety of PHRF, multihull, and one-design classes will be represented. The course begins in Trinity Bay and finishes close to Kemah. Volunteers stand ready on hand to make this year's regatta a oneof-a-kind event. Race Committee Chair Larry Rogers asserts the utmost confidence in Lakewood's members. "We have around 100 volunteers who help out with racing events. From organizing registration to planning entertainment for the awards ceremonies, it's an amazing effort from an amazing group of volunteers." Families and friends of skippers and their crews will enjoy fun social events at the club as well as spending time in the Bay Area, taking in the local sites.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 31 HOMECOMING - It was nearly 10 years ago when I first heard Mark May play, and I’ve been a follower ever since, almost exclusively at Katie’s. Mark is one of the few players capable of plugging themselves into the musical cosmos and channeling nothing less than out-of-this-world guitar playing – You know what I’m talking about! Mark left the area years ago to spend time with his father, kept himself musically busy and would make annual return visits around the winter holiday months. On these holiday jaunts, Mark would often lighten his traveling load by playing on borrowed pedals and amps. I recall Mark often digging through duffle bags of Tube Screamers, pedals, and cables piecing together his sound merely moments before the show would start. Players at Mark May visits would be a throwdown affair, often accompanied with long-time band mates Paul Ramirez and Dan Cooper. This year was very different with Mark skipping his holiday visit and this time bringing down his ENTIRE BAND complete with Soul Satyr horn section for a cross country CD Release tour of “Blues Heaven.” Not quite the same as leaving home and years later bringing your new honey to meet family, but definitely a warm return. It was a blistering hot show and fun time for all. You can tell a band by who is in the audience and that night at Katie’s, the house was simply PACKED with lead guitar frontmen and authorities of the Blues in standing room only audience. As for the album, I believe May has successfully capturing the live show musical energy onto a studio recording. Not a single song is shorter than 4 minutes in length and are of adequate length for honorable solo runs. Mixing levels are proper throughout the project respecting the passages needing reinforcement. Mastering is tastefully applied bringing together a project recorded at multiple locations into a homogenous pleasing compilation, known as an album. “Blues Heaven” - Currently now on my album of the year list. SCOUT BAR - We stopped in to check out the Valeluna CD release party. This is a band with interesting credentials. Within their first six months of existence, Valeluna was able to win the Houston Battle of the Bands over 50 other bands, score a place on the 94.5FM BuzzFest, and in just over two years, has released their second album, Affinity. With a FB following riding at just over 3,400, an enthusiastic street team, tables of merchandise and a sizable following, this seems to be one well-wired band. To celebrate the release of their second “sophomore” CD, I was given a code to download their first CD to review. Well, okay. Nonetheless, I was able to listen to clips from their new CD where I found a very tightly compressed product with about 2.5 db of variance max and seeming constant mixer levels throughout. I’m sure this was due to the host site as the show I heard at Scout Bar sounded great live with Reuben operating the desk that evening. I’ve no doubt there will be other Valeluna shows down the road. We’ll keep watch! IT’S A WRAP - Whew! We’ve survived two weeks of political conventions, and thank goodness, we have the Olympics to enjoy in August. Also on the map ahead, our hometown baseball team is sitting in a good spot. The dog days of summer are here, so keep a friendly eye out for those vulnerable to the heat and if you finding yourself needing to chill, come hang out at any of the many great spots we have on The SCENE. On the live music front, we’ve seen several new musical collaborations coming together along with many established collaborations dabbling in the new – definitely signs for good times ahead! Thanks for taking time sharing your stories and passing along interesting scoops and slants. Looking forward to hearing more when we see you out there on The SCENE!

Hourglass @ Cock-Eyed Seagull BIRTHDAYS - July was a great birthday month out on the SCENE with the Monster Birthday bash going down at the Cock-Eyed Seagull with Hourglass and at the San Leon Beach Pub with the Zach Tate Band. We’ve been checking out the Hourglass trio with their new addition of Greg Stephens on vocals, keyboards and guitar and July was the first time we heard the New Guy with the entire band. Looking forward hearing more to come! The Zach Tate Band (Zach Tate-guitar and lead vocals, Lynn Ragio-lead guitar, Stan Dupp-bass, Anthony Puskus-drums) like a great marinade, has allowed the necessary time for slide guitar wizard Lynn Raggio to meld into Zach’s original brash rock style and the results have been mighty dazzling. In July, we heard the band come together with a sizzling new sound neither party had before and I’m pretty sure nobody else anywhere has - A sound distinct enough to be called their own. The Zach Tate Band - Party ready…. CHEFAPALOOZA - The community came together in July for (Chef) Brent Evans who has been diagnosed with metastatic Zach Tate Band @ melanoma. Southside Roller Derby SOUTHSIDE ROLLER DERBY & SCHOOL OF ROCK This year, a packed house came out of the July heat and enjoyed a well-contested Golden Sk8 Championships at the Pasadena Convention Center. Readers will know of my recent fascination and interest that banked roller derby action provides. This sport has it all: Speed & agility, strength & stamina, finesse & grace, intelligence, tactics & strategy, utmost sportsmanship, all-age / all-gender interest, and even marriage proposals. Pretty cool, yes? Congrats to this year’s champions and to *all* of the contestants and organization for an incredible season. Hey, not only did we catch some great skating action, we caught some very fine live music during breaks courtesy of the Clear Lake School of Rock. We’ve been covering this crop of young talent, some perhaps ready to be gigging out live today. From the upper bleachers, I couldn’t help but notice youth at its best - energetic, technically crisp, sharing a voice that can fool you thinking Robert Plant is in the house, and best of all - having FUN! Viva!!!! RAILEAN RUM - For years, many of you have seen Kelly Railean out on the SCENE providing samples of her various rum products. This summer, nothing has been finer than to make the short drive into San Leon and hang out at the Railean Handmade Texas Rum Tasting Room. This friendly upbeat operation provides a cool setting for guests to drop in,

unwind, and hang out with an impressive list of over 60 different beverages to choose from. In July, we joined the many Pirates, Parrotheads, and good people of Sunny Jim @ Railean Rum The SCENE and enjoyed fine live music including Sunny Jim stopping in on his cross country Parrothead circuit, Time In A Bottle - A band that has a great following reinforcing the band’s punch and sizzle, and Gene Rutt, whom I’ve been wanting to see for quite some time. Gene is a local musician (Kemah Bums) playing on a trusty Ovation, a local publisher/editorial writer that we’ve enjoyed reading, has a voice of Burl Ives which is a great treat for tired ears, and was the person who connected me with The SCENE nearly 10 years ago – an adventure that keeps getting better each year. - Continued on Page 31

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35 In the words of Captain Dave, “Tantrum reminds me of many of the rock bands years ago that filled the area at places like Turtle Club, Cock-eyed Seagull and Maribelle’s.” In my words, I was impressed with how – in a mere 20-minute span – Tantrum was able to cover five decades with a crisp, gritty and clean Tantrum @ Jackie’s Brickhouse crunch. That, and how effortlessly they were able to get people to dance to the likes of Foo Fighters, Hendrix and Skynyrd. This was the first time we saw the Bodacious Tatas at Jackie’s. This gem of a band is amazingly comfortable and at home anywhere they play (so very vital winning over an audience). They always have fans wherever they go and an incredibly crazy ability to take any cover song you’ve heard and make it their own. Five picks up!

EVACUATION ROUTE HANGOUT - At some point, Highway 146 will Above: Bodacious Tatas @ Jackie’s Brickhouse undergo long overdue expansion. In the meantime, we are enjoying driving north on 146 for evenings in LaPorte at Mainly Drinks, ranked No. 4 “Highest Rated” this year among Greater Houston-area restaurants, according to Open Table. Pretty cool and in our backyard, too! I’m wondering if there’s a new chef there as the menu has several new dishes and their sauces have been even more amazing. At the top of my appetizer list: Smothered Lobster Fries with Shrimp and Crawfish, simply mindblowing! In July, we caught Guitar Hero David Hargraves accompanied with Minor Key (a duet of Hollie Hewitt and Garrett Heck) covering Steve Earle, Tom Waits, Taj Mahal, Townes Van David Hargraves @ Mainly Drinks Zandt, Fleetwood Mac, Rickie Lee Jones, Uncle Walt's Band, Eric Clapton, John Hyatt, Bonnie Raitt, Rolling Stones, Marty Robbins, Linda Rondstadt, Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Grateful Dead, and more! The next time I need to evacuate, I might be tempted to simply park it at Mainly Drinks and ride it out there. Hope to catch me some Hargraves and Minor Key if that happens. - Continued on Page 32

Blaggards

Continued From Page 48

“If you watch Roth, he has no interest in standing still. So many bands, they want the crowd to come to them. Not us, we come for you. You have no choice but to participate in the show,” Devlin asserts. Blaggards, also meaning “rogues” or “scoundrels,” is a band name also derived from Devlin’s youth (“Old people called little kids ‘blaggards’ in Dublin growing up, and I just always loved the sound of it,” he laughs). 12 years later, the band plays to adult crowds and little “blaggards” all across the nation and world, everywhere from standard show venues to large-scale festivals. “We just try to keep it interesting for all ages,” he says. “The coolest thing, though, is to watch these little kids lose their minds and start dancing around when we play. [Our songs] are like electric nursery rhymes!” he laughs. However, while they regularly play family-friendly shows in the area at places such as T-Bone Tom’s in Kemah, Devlin highly recommends catching one of their hair-flying, guitar-rocking, fiddle-induced, no-holds barred 21-and-over shows, such as the ones they play around several places in Houston, including Sherlock’s Baker St. Pub – Clear Lake, several times a month. A show, he adds, that will be far from monotonous.

Every year since 2010, Blaggards have had fans actually touring with them all over Ireland; all-inclusive packages with roundtrip airfare, accommodations, transport, meals, and more are included (full details available on www.blaggards.com), as the group sightsees in the day and gather in the pubs at night with performances from the band, travelling through Dublin, Cork, Killarney, and Galway, Ireland. The package is available to anyone in the country, but Clear Lake, Texas in particular turned out in force in last year’s event. “Last year, we had about 40 people tour with us – and most of the people were from Clear Lake!” he exclaimed. This, for Devlin, is a great part of the inspiration for the music and continuing touring in Texas and beyond.

“We drift so far into different genres of music…for one night, you’re not stuck with ‘just one band,’” he says.

“We’ve been doing this for 12 years, and the best part really is the people that you meet. To hear them say they have heard our music before, and never heard a show like this, and then get to see the show…this is what really pushes me to have a studio album.”

As for the future of the band, Blaggards have already niched their way into national and international success, and made a strong mark in Hollywood while doing so. Their songs “Drunken Sailor” and “Big Strong Man” from their first album titled Standards (an ode to the pub standards they regularly play), were included in the CBS

Cabo

series “The Good Wife”; and, most recently, execs from the recent New Line Cinema comedy How To Be Single (2016), starring Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson, contacted the band to feature an original instrumental song in one of the movie’s scenes that (of course) takes place in a pub on St. Patrick’s Day. In addition, with an upcoming album in the works being recorded in their new studio, future plans also include appearances on The Jimmy Fallon Show and Late Night with Stephen Colbert. The immediate future, however, has the band playing touring throughout Ireland from October 28 to November 6 this fall—with their fans.

For more information on Blaggards, their music, and their tours, visit their Facebook page or www.blaggards.com.

Another addition to the property will be a new LED sign visible from NASA Parkway. “It will be one of the first things guests see as they turn into Cabo,” said Rodriguez. The sign will keep guests upto-date on daily specials, musical guests and special events. Cabo offers flavorful food, a full bar and a focus on quality that keeps guests coming back every week. Besides, there are not too many local venues where one can choose to arrive by land, by sea, and yes, even by air – which has actually happened when a seaplane landed on Clear Lake and docked at Cabo earlier this year. Monday through Thursday, the kitchen stays open late, until midnight. On Friday and Saturday nights, the kitchen closes at 10 p.m. On those nights, Cabo fires up the outdoor grill and serves $3 fajita tacos until 2 a.m. The tacos are so well-liked that some regulars drop in just to grab 8 to 20 tacos to go! As guests discovered how top-notch the food is at Cabo, it became apparent to the management that the wine menu needed to match the cuisine. This increasing demand for wine led Rodriguez and his team to hand pick an entirely new wine list that will be unveiled along with the new menu in August. The building itself has undergone some changes under Rodriguez’s leadership. With fresh enthusiasm and extra manpower, Cabo added a new waitress station and revitalized the interior, including handmade tables and new décor. The outside benefitted from modernized decks, updated stairwells and fresh paint.

upcoming 10th year might have something special in store?!

Things were on autopilot at T-Bone Tom’s where we checked out Daze of Nite for the first time. Soundwise, these guys nailed it on fidelity (tone and tempo) playing the covers – Perhaps the closest match to Ted Nugent I’ve heard yet! We also caught Andy and The Dreamsicles along with the entire Kick Ass Brass on the Landshark stage. The Dreamsicles and the band’s faithful army are coming up on their 10th year, always adding something new, always performing crisply and always lots of fun. I’m thinking this

Doggie Etiquette:

Continued From Page 41 Per health code law, pets are not permitted to eat or drink out of restaurant dishes. (When you call ahead, find out if you need to bring your own dish.)

- Make sure your pet is on a leash at all times. - Keep the leash tight around your hand, or tie him or her to your own chair. Avoid tying dog leashes to tables because it could result in spilled food, drinks and further chaos. - Prohibit your furry friend from socializing with other guests or employees, unless approached. - Try to keep your dog close to your table or chair so he or she is not in the walking path of humans. - Per health code laws: Dogs are to remain on the floor. They are not allowed on the chairs or tables. - Bring your own doggie bowl or ask the waiter for a disposable bowl if necessary. (Some venues have specially designated dog bowls for pet consumption.)

- Be sensitive to your dog and people around you. If your dog is uneasy or stressed, cut your visit short. If your dog is causing anxiety around you, be conscious of it and either relocate or try to alleviate the problem. (Some people may have allergies; others have fears or anxieties around dogs.) - Many business owners and managers love pets, but remember, there are laws that businesses must abide by, namely health code laws, which prohibit animals into their establishment. Furthermore, some folks have sensitivities and/or allergies to animals.

- Be vigilant of all pet rules/guidelines at each location to make sure the mistake of one, doesn’t result in everyone’s privileges being removed. -----------------------------------Here is a list of a few local establishments with dog friendly patios: Aspens – Clear Lake Shores Cabo – Seabrook (Provides doggy water bowls) Jackie’s Brickhouse – Kemah La Poz - Seabrook Monkey Bar – Kemah Noah’s Ark – Bacliff (Provides water bowls for pets) Stuttgarden Tavern – Galveston Stuttgarden Tavern – Texas City The Republic House – Pasadena Thai Spice – Webster (Will provide water for pets) Please note that pet-friendly restaurant/bar seating is always outdoors only – but not all restaurants/bars with outdoor seating are pet friendly. In their words, this band is “a cornerstone of 1970’s Top 40s and FM radio, providing uplifting music and a positive message, to their loyal legion of first-, secondand third-generation fans.” Sounds about right! What I found delightful was to witness this present-day group up close, after “surviving inter-band conflicts and exhaustive touring and recording schedules, rising to the challenge with changes in producers and managers, and immersing themselves in their craft, infusing a newfound maturity into their rich body of work.” – If they could do this, then why can’t we? Inspiring!

We’ve had ourselves a busy month of July and looking forward to wrapping up summer with a flurry. But before we do, let’s run down a sample of what went down. ONLY IN AMERICA - Lighting the fuse last month was the Baytown Fourth of July Festival which year in and year out, ranks high on the list of favorites for many. What’s neat about this annual humdinger is their line up, letting local performers open for popular national acts. Past shows included Ryan Guidry opening for the Marshall Tucker Band and 4-Barrel Ramblers for Kansas. This year’s festival lineup committee *really* listened to what the community wanted and delivered with a Houston Press Top 10 Tribute Band, Kiss Alike opening for perennial classic-rock favorite, America. One would think this a most dubious lineup, yet it proved crowdpleasingly brilliant. About the home team: I caught the original Kiss in 1976, and I recall vividly aside the bright lights and pyrotechnics, how intensely the audience locked into the moment absorbing every bit of energy the show had to offer. Fast forward to 2016: Watching the audience’s focus on this sunny day in July, it was evident this Houston-based tribute band pulls off an outstanding job capturing the essence of the original band and securing a place on my “Good Anytime” list. - Continued on Page 37

CABO

By Tanisha Hicks Tucked behind the busy traffic and businesses alongside NASA Parkway, sits Cabo, a two-story waterfront entertainment venue with a view, food, drinks and music. Their unique location at 2513 E. NASA Parkway has a completely unobstructed view of Clear Lake. Boaters are welcome to dock, dine, sip on some refreshing adult beverages and stay a while. Recreation, relaxation, live music, great drink specials and a new and improved menu are all part of the experience that is Cabo. Either deck is a great place to watch the sun set and relax before the venue transforms into an electric nightlife hotspot. Upstairs, find a pool table and ping-pong table indoors, and a giant Jenga set on the patio. True ping-pong enthusiasts and amateurs alike will appreciate the serious ping-pong tournaments that take place on Monday evenings. The downstairs deck is complete with docking capabilities, full bar, cornhole sets, plenty of seating, plus waterfront views and a stage for live music and DJs on weekends.

Sundays, featuring lighter fare such as build-your-own salads, deviled eggs and other comfort foods. Rodriguez said Sunday’s menu will debut Cabo’s version of Poutine (pulled pork over tater tots and Southwest coleslaw, brown gravy and chipotle cream drizzled over the top). Cabo has something fun happening every night of the week. Monday night enjoy 50-cent wings. Tuesday is Taco Tuesday with $2 and $3 tacos. Wednesday bring out your inner nerd for Geeks who Drink Trivia Night and $5 Cabo Burgers. Thursday night is Steak Night, which brings in enthusiasts by boat and car. Touted for a good reason, steaks and fresh produce are delivered to Cabo on Thursday mornings, and the steaks are hand cut on the premises.

Live entertainment adds to the atmosphere at Cabo. Club favorite “Obsolete August” (a two-piece acoustic duo) plays Thursday nights. Saturday nights feature a rotation of live bands with resident DJ, DJ Khaos, spinning upstairs between sets and SBMT downstairs. For example, instead of multiple burger specialties, the menu will feature the Cabo Burger with the option for guests to make it their own. No longer confined to just what’s on the menu, burger fans can have fun coming up with their own signature burger by adding mushrooms, avocados, pico, any number of cheeses and other add-ons. Direct from Dublin: A Piece of Ireland continues to Rock CLEAR LAKE By Sarah Piña Long hair is flying, guitars are wailing, fiddle strings are on fire. An unmistakable voice from Ireland then erupts into a pub classic:

Austin John Winkler (Formerly of Hinder)

Sat., August 13

What shall we do with a drunken sailor?

SCOUT BAR

What shall we do with a drunken sailor? Early in the morning! With these electric folk rock sounds from the Emerald Isle reverberating in the room, one could close their eyes and easily imagine themselves in a typical Irish pub, dancing and clinking pints late into the night. And that is exactly the dynamic experience the self-touted “stout Irish rock” band Blaggards brings to Clear Lake, Texas and beyond several times a week.

Infinity’s Twin Thurs., August 18

The band—currently, consisting of guitarist/vocalist Patrick Devlin, bassist/vocalist Chad Smalley, drummer Michael McAloon, and a rotating cast of fiddlers—was established in 2004 in Houston, Texas by Devlin. I recently caught up with Devlin to talk about the unique brand of music they serve up to Clear Lake several times a month— where it all began, what sets them apart in the music industry, and the future of this must-see group. After moving to Houston from Ireland in his 20s and working as a bartender around town, helping to open now-staples for music such as the Continental Club, Devlin was impressed by the music scene and witnessed numerous incredible bands in the area. “The talent level is just so good. I’ve lived all over, but the music scene is amazing here and people don’t give the city enough credit for that,” he said.

However, it was through these experiences that Devlin envisioned something different he could bring to the circuit. Blaggards, then, were formed and are the result of a long-standing cultural diffusion and his greatest musical influences. “I haven’t seen anything close to this in the area,” he says. A native of Dublin, Ireland, he grew up heavily influenced by the traditional Irish folk sounds of his homeland, as well as the likes of Freddy Mercury, Elvis Presley, and David Lee Roth, to name a few. - Continued on Page 34
