Tribute Band Spotlight:
CLEAR LAKE ROCK CITY! KISS ALIKE & others “Rock & Roll All Nite” Two Fifths
By Sarah Piña
Sat., October 15
As Clear Lake continues to draw some of the leading artists in the music industry to the area, there has been another trend emerging in the region at a variety of venues and events: that of tributes to some of the greatest classic rock groups of all time.
HUGH & JEFF’S
First, a bit of clarification may be in order about what a tribute band is vs. what is commonly referred to as a cover band: Expect a full-on experience with these bands. A true tribute band is one that not only sings the songs of the original group, but studies them, their performances, and makes sure that they are spot on – down to the gestures, pyrotechnics and other special effects including detailed costumes.
Sevendust Tue., October 18 SCOUT BAR
In the Clear Lake area, Scout Bar has hosted several of such groups recently, including Judas X (a homage to Judas Priest) and Noose (A tribute to A Perfect Circle). Noose will play their last show at Scout Bar this month along with Deft-Ones (Deftones tribute) on October 8; however, in true tribute band fashion, the same lead singer for Noose will continue performing with Toology, a tribute to, of course, Tool. (For those that may not know, the actual bands of A Perfect Circle and Tool share the same lead singer, Maynard Keenan, in real life). In addition, the Bay Area will also play host to some of the best tribute bands anywhere. Fortunately for this area, some will rock and roll all in one place this month. When the Texas Classic Rockin’ Food Truck Rally hits La Marque on Saturday, October 8, at the Gulf Greyhound Park, so will Escape (performing their respects to Journey), Back in Black (a tribute to AC/DC) and KISS ALIKE, who many are excited for, including Scout Bar’s Roland Belmarez. - Continued on Page 36

Okole maluna, Clear Lake!
Volcano Room Erupts in Seabrook By Sarah Piña Ever since Volcano Room opened (4650 E. NASA Parkway in Seabrook) this past summer, an increasing group of Clear Lake residents have enjoyed handcrafted specialty cocktails and its island-inspired modern décor. The vibrant “tiki-chic” lounge, complete with a fun island bar, private rooms and even a patio with games delivers an experience many take a trip into the loop for. Just one sip of a French 75 champagne cocktail or caipirinha (made just like they do on a beach in Ipanema, Brazil) crafted by their expert mixologists, and it’s is enough to see that the trip isn’t necessary. “We’ve been very humbled by the continuous support from the community since our inception,” said owner Stephen Ross, who conceptualized the idea for Volcano Room after being inspired by the innovative craft beer and wine industry happening in the area, as well as the water-enthusiasts of Clear Lake and its people.
with attentive, friendly service, delicious handcrafted, island-inspired drinks, all with a Midtown Houston vibe offered just across from the water. “I wanted to create a variety of environments within the space itself,” he said. One of those spaces is the bamboo-laden tiki bar one first sees upon entering, complete with a welcoming and neon green “Okole maluna” (meaning “bottoms up”) to greet patrons.
“Operators are being very progressive in their approach towards craft beer programs, wine, foreign cuisine, and twists on comfort classics,” Ross said. “So, instead of a guest walking off the beach into a surf side beach bar,” he said, the idea was to “have patrons walk off the [waterside] into what a lounge might look like at a nice resort with modern accents. Somewhere that’s still approachable for the shorts and T-shirt crowd, but at night can offer a splash of style for those who want to dress up.” And that is exactly the feel one gets in Volcano Room – along
“We've also created unique spaces for groups wanting to host their own happy hours, birthday parties, and more,” Ross said. “One space has been made to look like a cabana that can accommodate 20 people, while another space has dark leather couches, candlewrapped walls, and can host an event for up to 30 to 40 people.” As for the cocktails themselves, and some island-inspired eats, one could safely say a “foodie” will come away highly satisfied as well. “Whether it’s our fresh juice and champagne cocktails, or our Volcano Old Fashioned and bourbon/whiskey selection, there really is something for everyone,” Ross emphasized. “And if you haven't tried our pulled pork gruyere mac & cheese with spiced pineapple jam, then that's reason enough to come check us out, as our approach to food has its own unique qualities. We even put crumbled goat cheese and toasted chopped pecans in our madeto-order guacamole.” - Continued on Page 38

How long have you been a bartender + How long at Preamble? I’ve been bartending 3 or 4 years off and on. I’ve been at Preamble since we opened 6 months ago. What do you love about working at Preamble? I like the creative versatility. 20801 We make hundreds of different cocktails each week from a Margarita to a Manhattan, a Corpse Reviver #2 to a Daiquiri, a Mai Tai to a Last Word. We’re also constantly coming up with our own cocktails like the Spicy Cucumber Martini, the Porter Flip, and the Autumn Old Fashioned. We may not dish out drinks as fast as a “regular bar,” but you can spend plenty of time in Preamble before you’d have to drink the same cocktail twice.

YOUR favorite day of the week to work at Preamble & why? Tuesdays and Thursdays are the best. Fairly low volume usually so I can put some time and effort into some over the top cocktails. Top 3 drinks do you recommend to customers at Preamble? My current favorite is an Old Fashioned made with Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey. It has an awesome, wellrounded flavor and smoothness. My usual go-to, personally, is a Vieux Carré. Basically a Manhattan meets a Sazerac with the addition Bénédictine – very smooth with

Gulf Fwy #12 in Webster plenty of layers on your palette. You would never guess that all 6 ingredients are spirits. Light on the body, but heavy on the alcohol. Lastly, I would recommend our new signature cocktail, the Porter Flip. It’s gained a lot of popularity, especially amongst coffee lovers (like myself). We use 8th Wonder Rocket Fuel Vietnamese Coffee Porter as a base for the flavor, combine it with spiced rum, and add a whole egg to give it a really rich texture. It basically tastes like a Vietnamese Frappuccino! Do you have a signature drink? Well I could never settle on one drink. With the changing of the seasons right now, though, I think I have to choose The Autumn Old Fashioned. Using rye instead of bourbon, you get that nice whiskey heat as it goes down, along with a great blend of fall flavors and aromas like apple bitters, maple, and allspice. It’ll really hit the spot once the cold weather starts coming through. - Continued on Page 40

Featured Bartender: Continued From Page 45 Are there any new drinks you’re excited about ? Plenty. Fall and winter flavors stand out to me above any others. One yet to be named is made with Laird’s Apple Jack Brandy and essentially tastes like apple cider. One possibly more recognizable is the Split Italian, which is essentially a Margarita with an Amaretto foam floating on top. And, finally, I’m working on (success to be determined) a bacon-infused whiskey for something of a breakfast-themed Old Fashioned. What do you do when not at work? I’ll either be working on something Preamble-related, taking my ferret to a park, or being on the patron side of a bar. But usually I’m just at work. The most amusing or weird question you have ever been asked by a customer? “Can you splash some Sprite in my Old Fashioned?”
5 words that describe you: Awkward, sarcastic, forgetful, humorous, and compulsive. Favorite thing about the Bay Area? The view! Nothing like going out on the pier after a long shift and enjoying a bit of tequila while relaxing to the sounds of the lake. What do you love about bartending? It’s not really work. You’re getting paid to throw a party and make sure people are having a good time. You get to meet all kinds of people and hear the stories they have to tell. And I’m not big on waking up early so the schedule is pretty sweet. Oh! And there’s not much traffic on the way home at 4 a.m.! What motivates you? I think one should always strive to be a master of their art. There’s no sense in being complacent at what you spend half of your week doing. Opportunity tends to seek the virtuoso.

Volcano Room From Page 47 Volcano Room also offers up a variety of music, which their wide range of clientele have enjoyed since its inception (“While sitting in Volcano you could easily hear a Frank Sinatra remix followed by Depeche Mode, Slick Rick, Notorious BIG or Calvin Harris,” Ross added), and will soon add DJs and fun holiday events to the mix as well. Following the huge success of their Inaugural Moms & Mimosas Back-to-School Mixer, Volcano Room will also host a Bubbles vs. Black Friday event for those who revel in Black Friday shopping activities the day after Thanksgiving. Events or not, the experience, Ross said, is one patrons are sure to enjoy. “We really try to give our guests the same experience they would get in a bar/lounge area of a fine dining restaurant. At the end of the day though, we’re a funky island lounge where we take our jobs seriously – but we don’t take ourselves seriously. Loose Notes by Andy Eng
Greetings good people! The month of September is officially behind us and for those of you with tax obligations, hope things turned out good. The live music we took in last month were – in the words of Jeff Wilson of the Hunger – Stellar! Great job to all the talented musicians and staff out there for making it happen. Let’s run down a quick list of some of what went down starting with the…
LIGHTHOUSE DISTRICT: With school back in session, and it being too early for snowbird season, the Lighthouse District is ours again. We caught Shane Barnhill and his band for the first time at T-Bone Tom’s. Along with taking in a set from his pleasing country repertoire, I picked up an interesting aspect on Shane, that he’s with the fire department. “It inspires the way I live and allows me to appreciate that every day is a gift. I also try to teach my kids about the meaning of brotherhood and others being able to count on you. That’s what carries over into the music and being part of a band,” Barnhill explained. With a style he has termed, “Jukebox Music,” Barnhill listened to a variety of artists as he grew up writing his first song and has since produced album number three. Recognizing the music has to be steps above, he hired Jason Rooks and Bobby Terry, proven producers for his most recent project – Something I can appreciate from witnessing the variety of DIY music projects being released these days. While we’re on T-Bone Tom’s, in September, we also covered…. - Continued on Page 35

KISS ALIKE

“KISS ALIKE’S performance is incredible. They spit fire and blood like the real thing, and the costumes are dead on,” Belmarez said. Indeed, Houston-based KISS ALIKE, in addition to appearing stunningly like the original group with their spikey black hair, signature black and white face paint, and over-the-top rocker metal costumes, have even taken on the band member names KISS fans will recognize are in true reverence to the original members of KISS and include: Parn Stanley (guitar/vocals), Jon Frehley (guitar/vocals), Blü Simmons (bass/vocals), and Justin Criss (drums/vocals). This is not just any KISS tribute, however, as evidenced by recent success. In the short time they have played together, the group has already attracted not only local, but national attention as well. This summer they were voted as one of the top 10 tribute acts in Houston by area residents; have played the Houston House of Blues numerous times, along with several shows all around Houston including the Clear Lake area; and will play a show at the House of Blues New Orleans on October 22. And the icing on the proverbial KISS cake? They were invited to play for the official pre-party of the 6th Annual KISS KRUISE (touted as KISS KRUISE VI, with over 2,300 members of the KISS “Navy”) at Miami’s Hard Rock Café on November 3. This rocketing success, however, should come as no surprise to those who have already witnessed a KISS ALIKE show. For each performance, every effort is made by
the band (all of whom have been diehard fans since they were kids) with extreme preparation up to the show to provide the ultimate KISS experience. “Our stage manager, Boog Kulick, and our crew are the best. We couldn’t do this without them,” said Blü Simmons, who is effectively the Gene Simmons of the group. “We’re very honored to do this, and we take our craft very seriously. After wearing those boots, doing the choreography, and having the blood everywhere, which is so messy and sticky that it takes hours to clean up after the show…I have more respect for KISS than I already had!” said Simmons. Post-show audience feedback proves the work they put into their shows is not in vain, however. “We’re KISS ALIKE, the tribute band, but the greatest thing is when people say to me that they weren’t necessarily fans of KISS before, and now they are. Knowing that we helped to expand the KISS Army, just hearing that, that is the ultimate compliment,” said Simmons. So what else can an attendee expect at an upcoming KISS Alike show? “The ultimate KISS experience: firebreathing, smoking guitar solos, the lighted KISS sign, and spot-on vocals. We call ourselves the ultimate tribute band,” said Simmons. “This is an incredible joy to truly experience a tribute like ours, because there’s so much that goes into the

DRUGSTORE GYPSIES – which would be the name of a band we caught for the first time at Hugh & Jeff’s. Aside from their interesting name, this band grabs your attention by the jugular in many ways. For me, it was the crazy super crisp and bright tone that Dillan Dostal was getting out what appeared to be a C5-01 5 watt Marshall amp. Joining Dillan is Duke Ryan (front man), Korey Davis (bass guitar) and Rey Chopa (drums). In their
PIRATES & POETS – We began covering this monthly gig years ago, originally hosted by Jerry Diaz as a chance to hear the story behind the song for extra insights and aspects of the song not readily apparent after the first several listening. It’s my observation that the up close and personal experience between the artist and audience results in more CD and merchandise sales; at least so
within the parrot head community. In September we caught a Pirates & Poets show hosted by Donny Brewer on his Winnebago Tour and himself, a T-Bone Tom’s regular performer. Joining Donny was Eric Erdman and Paul Roush, two solid performers on opposite corners of the board with what I would call an edgy Muscle Shoals background (Erdman) in one corner, and smooth story telling (Roush) in the other corner with Donny in the center. Summed all together, we have a T-Bone Tom’s audience and an entire evening of enjoyable, thought provoking musical entertainment. Pirates and Poets – Be sure to check it out and stay a while. Around the corner and across from the docks, we caught up with Chad Ware at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack taking a break from his gig as lead guitarist for the Rick Trevino Band. Serious soulful serenading was the watchword of the evening, highlighted with Down The Road, a fan favorite original. One trait I enjoy is when Ware plays lead licks on the acoustic, probably based on skills acquired in his youth playing banjo. In a documentary of the Kiss MTV Unplugged show, several mentions are made of how it took Ace Frehley considerable effort to put forth lead licks on with out the aid of Frehley’s Les Paul and Marshall stack – It’s my opinion that Ware plays lead licks on acoustic possibly better than Frehley. Speaking of Marshall amps…

words, this band has “created an incredibly unique sound….best described as a mixture of rock and roll blues with just the right amount of that sweet Texas Touch. A working man’s band who are busting their asses with performing, writing, recording, marketing and advertising to turn a dream into a reality.” That pretty much accurately describes what I heard that evening. Looking at the Gypsies’ schedule, they cover the region typically 5 to 20 miles beyond Beltway 8 on the far side reaches of the dial – This band isn’t afraid to travel, and earns an audience whereever they go. If you’ve a chance to catch one of their shows live, go for it! OPEN MIC – Thursday night action at the Cock-Eyed Seagull was good in September with a good house of listeners kicking back and catching up, while taking in local open mic action. Also in September, we dropped in on Summerbreeze at Noah’s Ark with their new song lineup featuring vocal harmonies of the type often enjoyed, yet rarely heard performed live in the area. I’m really looking forward to hearing this all come together, it should be good! Stay tuned in! - Continued on Page 33

WEST COAST MEETS SOUTH COAST – When I saw that Harlis Sweetwater was playing at Katie’s, I knew he was either new or not from these parts. I also had the odds going with me that since this was happening at Katie’s, it would likely be a great show. Holy Cow! The entire room was getting down and grooving with Harlis and his band blistering the air on the stage. I asked owner Bob Emmons if Harlis brought his army of followers. “Nope... They’re all from around here and he’s from Huntington Beach, California. It’s called Rocking Blues”. Instant like! Seeking to place this bearded guitarist who had me believing he was mostly Viking warrior, the first thing that came to mind was neither his voice nor playing style; rather I was having trouble thinking which variety of hot pepper this band reminded me of. I’ve yet to really peg Harlis Sweetwater and his band. They were all very pleasant and we had a great chat. They hold great respect and have historical accuracy for the musicians who had done it before. I could easily envision the band performing opera – tattoos and all. When I spotted James Nagel’s lovely wife throw some dough in the tip jar, it became clear that the Blues Hound had something to do with this show. I’ve two albums of his I’ll be reviewing in next month’s edition of the SCENE and after giving them a listen to a couple times, my brain floods with “GUSTO, GRIT, PASSIONATE & LOUD.” Scratching the surface a bit more, it turns out Harlis is a well-respected and recognized talent in Orange County. I’ve spent lots of time in that part of the country (a place where
THE SCENE
you get parts to build space ships) and such credentials bodes well – a true talent in a land with lots of competition, and in this case, talent wins out. I know we’ve got some great talent here along the South Coast – There must be a way we can exchange some more of this good stuff. To be continued… LABOR DAY WEEKEND SHOW – Unusual circumstances kept this year’s annual Red Fish Island Raft Up in dry dock avoiding what my have turned out to be a modern day Gilligan’s Island episode. Not to be denied, the party found it’s way to Cabo (in Seabrook) for a free show with Kelly McGuire. This was the first time I had seen Kevin Taylor play drums with McGuire, an overall enjoyable time indeed. Musically, Kelly’s songs are perhaps the most mentally soothing material on the planet. Kelly is also one of few guitar players strong enough to play lead, yet makes room on the line up for Ken Reynolds making for some of the finest guitar call and response action happening in the area. In my limited mind, on the level of Walsh & Felder’s dueling guitars on the Hotel California outro, and a passage I could listen to endlessly. OVER THE TOP - Further into the weekend was the annual Pre-Labor Day show with The Hunger, Saturate, Lies of An Alibi, Tode, Sullivan’s Vessel, Joe Serrato & Andy Cortez. It was utterly delightful seeing Cortez perform live for the first time, and I’m sure it was no less than a pleasant treat for many Scout Bar regulars. Serrato and Sullivan’s Vessel did a great job also keeping the music alive out on the Scout Bar Courtyard, the finest reverb setting in the city. Detailed mention of Tode is warranted. - Continued on Page 32

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 33 According to the band, Tode “is a 4-piece grunge band from Houston that is comprised of Jeremy Kilgore on guitar and vocals, Ashton Kilgore on drums, Daniel Turvey on guitar, and Chuck Sanders on bass guitar. Tode officially formed in March of 2015. Tode is influenced by the Grunge scene of the ’90s fused with some of today’s top metal bands.” I felt Tode’s performance solid, interestingly complex and coherent in a genre the area needs. Tode and Lives Of An Alibi (recently mentioned in depth in a prior issue of the SCENE) put on shows in September that placed both solidly amongst the leaders for my ‘New Band of the Year’ vote. If you haven’t scored your copy of Saturate’s new CD, The Separation Effect, do so! The intensity of effort that the entire band puts into performing live on stage is totally worthy of another national tour. As for the host band, The Hunger simply outdid themselves once again in a show best described as “Stellar.” It was clear the band was bent on giving the audience their ab-
solute best, that they would maintain their tradition of recognizing long-time Hunger supporters, and had room for the usual outrageous Hunger show antics. JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE – We caught up with Rat Ranch at the Brickhouse in September while catching their breath after a sizzling summer campaign. This is one of the busiest bands in the area playing an average of 200 gigs a year and they own the sound gear, lighting equipment and have the fan following to prove it. Rat Ranch still uses the tungsten lamps that give the show a warmer natural feel and a sound stack that’s outdoor open air capable. If you haven’t scored your copy of their debut album Rat Ranch, this is really one that deserves a place in your collection. The sound is unique and when you hear it, you will recognize as Rat Ranch unique. Heads up: If you need to book a band and are even thinking about hiring Rat Ranch for your special gig, these guys are starting to fill their 2017 schedule, so you’ll want to be contacting them sooner rather than later.

The folks at Jackie’s Brickhouse are ever up to the challenge bringing in what the people want, and in September, we caught Loxley for the first time. This was an incredibly highenergy show with blistering covers and a frenzied fan base proudly referring to themselves as “The Clan.” This is a band that sounds a lot like their photo gallery page with powerful lighting and plenty of clarity. The sound setup was most curious with the control surface consisting of a laptop, a tablet, a vintage 1980s Audio Control (32 bin butterfly) analyzer, and a mouse… Excellent channel separation and individual signal optimization. Great fidelity to the original. Crisply folded, reinforced and cleanly pushed into the room providing a full-body vibe experience likely like that at the arena show. The atmosphere of the show had a strong semblance to that of a Velcro Pygmies show which made perfect sense once realizing these two bands cross similar paths – an awesome touching tribute by the band with Loxley herself playing on the piano, a touching tribute to Jacob, the beloved fallen bass guitarist of the Pygmies. Well done!!! ASPENS – A few months ago while covering the Joe Palermo benefit, we caught quite a few impressive local talents performing. As I’ve mentioned, I enjoy benefits, especially for musicians, as the performances are often very inspired and magical. One

performer I caught was Micah Mathews and finally was able to catch he and his band, Turning Point, at Aspen’s in September. Turning Point is a Seabrook band less than a year old, has several CCISD connections and is already on the Sherlock’s Baker Street Circuit. Checking out the bands website, the other band members include Ryan Damian, Grant Earnest, Max Ready, and Jarious Baird (drums, bass, lead guitar and keys). Musically, I appreciated the wide spread of tunes this band covers, several of which you’d be hard pressed to hear live anywhere unless you get to see the original artist. I’ll be looking forward to follow-up viewings of this energetic collection of talent. ROGER’S – There is an interesting statistic about the Houston area. There are so many people living here that are not “from here” but after arriving, take root. I am one in that statistic and in my early days of taking root, I did so catching a ride with Andy and The Dreamsicles playing weekly at the Seabrook Sundance
Grill that has since washed away. Over the years, this band has continually carried on with perhaps one of the larger followings each and every show. There are Dreamsicle fans everywhere, and in September, we found them at Roger’s. Roger’s is a multi-venue facility. I can see adequately hosting pool & dart leagues, mini concerts, dance hall parties, and a back patio large enough for gumbo and chili cook-offs. With patio season upon us, we’ll be looking forward to what’s happening at Rogers. - Continued on Page 30

PUNK STAR FULL THROTTLE - I’ve really been enjoying this Wednesday evening show at Scout Bar. The variety of guests on this show never ceases to amaze me including the Come and Taste It Cookers who passed along what has to be the best-kept winning secret for a cook off team I’ve ever heard. Food is good! Proof that this is a show for all ages and in the words of co-host Chris Calderas, 9 year old “Phenom Kross Patrick” was in the house sporting a wellgroomed spike and showing off a stage poise and kit skills good enough to redefine the term “proud parent.” On the music front was a slant totally unexpected from the show’s producers, bringing in two of Houston’s bright new bands: Turnin’ Up and The Heights Funk Collective. Both of these bands clearly on assigned missions to restore Houston’s greatness in Funk, Soul, Jazz, Boogie, Groove, Gospel, Latin & Improv. Each

30TH HARVEST MOON REGATTA: OCTOBER 13-16 The largest port to port race in North America will celebrate 30 years this month when more than 200 sailing yachts gather in front of Galveston’s Pleasure Pier for the start of a 150-mile race in open Gulf waters to Port Aransas. The Harvest Moon Regatta is a US Sailing “offshore” regatta open to all racing cruising spinnaker and non-spinnaker sailing yachts with a minimum length of 27 feet. More than 150 boats are expected to race this year with close to 2,000 racers, friends and family attending the awards ceremony. The regatta is organized by Bay Access, a charitable organization supporting amateur racing. It is hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club, City of Port Aransas and Mustang Island. It is up for debate among sailors if they participate each year to win or more for the popular Welcome Sailors Rum Party sponsored by Bacardi. What is not up for debate, is the tremendous growth of the regatta since the first year in 1987, when 17 yachts participated. Legend has it that one Friday night in the Lakewood Yacht Club bar (following a long Board of Director’s meeting), the often discussed topic “we need to use our boats more” evolved into “we need to sail offshore more.”
A few more Barcardi drinks and some wild ideas followed that night, but unlike many ideas birthed at a bar and fueled by adult beverages, the concept of organizing a race to take place in the Gulf of Mexico did not fade away, but germinated into plans for an event to include as many sailors as possible for a late fall offshore sail. The idea was shared with Houston Yacht Club, Texas Corinthian Yacht Club and the Galveston Bay Cruising Association, as well as the LYC Board of Directors. After several meetings and lots of discussions it was determined that LYC would spearhead the effort and the Harvest Moon Regatta was born. The first regatta was designed to run for about a week, sailing from the Galveston jetties to Port Isabel for race #1, then back up the coast to Port Aransas as race #2. Then there was Port A to inside the Galveston jetties for race #3 and on to the Seabrook marker two for race #4. Seventeen yachts sailed that first year. In year two (1988),
the regatta changed forever when Hurricane Gilbert blew away the facilities in Port Isabel. Thus began the tradition of sailing to Port Aransas under a magnificent full moon each October. Thanks to Mother Nature and Hurricane Gilbert, the Harvest Moon Regatta steadily grew from the 17 yachts of 1987 to more than 260 yachts in recent years. This was due in large part to the perfect destination, Port Aransas. This ideal Texas port allows yacht owners and sailors to use minimal days from work to join in on what can be a most memorable overnight sail down the Texas coast during what is traditionally, the best offshore sailing time of the year. For further information, please check the race website at www.HarvestMoonRegatta.com.
Lakewood Yacht Club Members Win Challenging Vineyard Race Lakewood Yacht Club members Chris and Karen Lewis who have been competing on the East Coast this summer with their 44’ J-44 Kenai won their IRC Class and took the overall IRC victory to win the Vineyard Light Ship trophy over Labor Day weekend. The Vineyard Race, hosted by Stamford Yacht Club in Connecticut, was the 82nd running of this 240-mile event. Viewed by many as the most challenging offshore race, with segments in Long Island Sound and the open Atlantic, as well as two crossings of tidal races that mark the boundaries between sound and ocean. The trophy memorializes the Vineyard Light Ship that sunk in September 1944 with all hands on board during a hurricane.

Sailing with Chris and Karen were local sailors David Hinrichsen, Emmett Dickheiser, Pedro Gianotti, Alex Freas and Reed Cleckler. Two east coast sailors Alec Snyder and Gurhan Ozen were also onboard. During the passage out of Long Island Sound, they picked the wind changes as it swung from the gradient northeast breeze to a thermal breeze and finally a south easterly. At Vineyard Beacon turning mark, Kenai was lying 6th rounding with much faster race boats. At the finish, after a 120-mile spinnaker leg home, charging in at up to 12 knots in a building breeze created by Hurricane Hermine, they corrected to finish 11 minutes faster than 2nd place Vamp, another J-44, after a 33-hour race. Earlier this summer Kenai won the Rolex Cup participating as a two-boat team with a fellow LYC boat Leading Edge owned by Tom and Diane Sutton. Kenai also won IRC Classes in the Around Conanicut Island Race and the New York Yacht Club 162nd Annual Regatta and finished third in class in the 50th Newport-Bermuda Race; making her Runner-up overall in the Onion Patch Series. Chris and Karen who first joined Lakewood in 1996 have owned Kenai for 20 years and over that time improved the boat to make her more competitive. The most recent change being the addition of a 1.5m sprit and giant 175sq m spinnakers. She has a modern sail inventory furnished by the local sail lofts North, Quantum and UK Halsey Sails.

GRAPHIC THOUG
Featured Artist: Tim Razkani
HTS
Tim Razkani makes his thoughts transform into reality utilizing computer generated graphics. “I see it in my mind and create it. Whatever pops into my head,” he said. It’s difficult for the Friendswood local to describe his style of art. Genuinely Razkani declared, “I don’t ever want to say it is art. Society calls it art, but it’s what is in my thoughts and I design it.” Razkani has been creating since he was a young kid. He received a degree in graphic design from the University of Houston. “I’m not sure I use any of what I learned though. There were too many rules. I’m more outside of the box,” confessed Razkani. He then decided to make money off his talents and “not work for anyone else anymore.” Razkani began with building custom, pressed-birch long-boards that he shaped, cut, sanded and designed. He currently runs a successful print shop in League City which makes generating his thoughts quite convenient. Razkani explained, “I can design and print in five minutes.” He continues to make custom-designed boards as well. When asked what inspires him; Razkani replied, “Life is inspiration. Look all around you. Waking up above ground each day is pretty good inspiration.” Whatever his inspirations and mental concepts, Razkani’s well-thought designs are remarkably bold. The peculiar images are striking, bizarre, and entirely intriguing. His use of boards as some of the design backgrounds gives more depth and adds to the uniqueness of the pieces. Razkani is a brave designer. He disclosed that he does not save any of his files. His designs can’t be reprinted or reproduced again. Razkani admitted he wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad idea. All of his manufactured mental images are truly one-of-a-kind graphic designs. Razkani stated he is still getting used to people loving his works. He continues to mainly create for himself. He said, “I need to create what’s in my head.” To learn more about Tim Razkani, email him at tim@signflygraphics.com. His graphic thoughts are also on display at Art of Coffee.

The project hopes to enhance the beauty of the beach in two ways: adding works of art to the public space, and increasing the proper use of the trash barrels to reduce marine debris. Design themes included Ocean Organisms, Coastal Processes, Marine Debris, Marine Ecosystems on the Gulf and Galveston.

ART MEETS SPACE Art Space Suit Project • Art, Science and Healing Collide window of the International Space Station. She transitioned from astronaut to artist and shared her experiences through her original space art and worked on this project to increase awareness of childhood cancer. “The Space Suit Art Project is the most meaningful project I’ve ever been a part of,” says Stott. “The power and inspiration of the artwork that each of these kids are producing is overwhelmingly impressive. I’m in awe of the very positive impact I see on everyone participating.”
By Domino Taylor An amazing art project that combined space suits and young cancer patients resulted in colorful space suits that went to space and were worn by astronauts in the International Space Station all while increasing awareness of children with cancer. This outreach project is named the Space Suit Project, a collaboration between the Johnson Space Center's Engineering Directorate, ILC Dover, the International Space Station and MD Anderson. The project inspired the leaders within NASA's space station program to support the effort with help from astronauts, scientists and engineers. The agency provided the patterns for the suits and collaborated with ILC Dover to assemble the garments.

The first produced spacesuit is named “Hope” and came from more than 600 swatches painted by patients, families and MD Anderson staff. A second suit, “Unity”, assembled from hand-painted swatches provided by the space centers that partnered to build the International Space Station and by children’s hospitals around the world, symbolizing the global issues surrounding childhood cancer. A third suit was named “Courage”, is not a patchwork suit, but a NASA-issue flight suit hand-painted by patients, their families and hospital staff.
Pediatric patients and their families, as well as MD Anderson’s staff, handpainted decorative fabric swatches that were then stitched together to create two replica spacesuits. The Space Suit Art Project was developed through the hospital’s Arts in Medicine Program, which helps pediatric patients cope with cancer treatment through art. Ian Cion, the program director of the Arts in Medicine Program knew that this would be a way to for the young patients to forget about their treatment while they were working on space suits.
In July, “Courage” flew aboard a cargo vessel to the International Space Station where it is being worn by astronaut Kate Rubins, who is conducting research aboard the space station. Rubins spoke of being inspired by this project during a live video conversation with MD Anderson pediatric cancer patients and representatives of The Space Suit Art Project.
Retired NASA astronaut Nicole Stott collaborated on the project. Stott is the first astronaut to paint what she saw while looking out the

Seven years of doing things the right way creates a lot of momentum for any business. But don’t expect to see another Gio’s location anytime soon. Check it: GIO'S FLYING PIZZA does Italian from scratch By Jason Goodrich Make a checklist for your ideal neighborhood Italian joint, and it might look a lot like mine: Classic sauces made from scratch daily. Check. Expertly hand-tossed pizzas. House-made gelato. Local craft beers on tap. Check, check and check. month and comes up with some crazy specials."
Wrap all these in a cozy, Italian-inspired interior complete with wine bar, and that would make me one happy paisano.
Indeed. The latest kitchen innovations, Italian egg rolls and Portabello fries, you won’t see at many other places.
Luckily for all paisan-kind, the owners of Gio's Flying Pizza, Steve and Diana Gunnett, had a similar vision when they opened their restaurant in 2009 at 650 FM 517W in Dickinson.
The rest of the menu is familiar territory: bruschetta, hoagies, pastas, lasagna, pizza. What sets all these offerings apart from the rest is that they’re all made from scratch every day.
That's not to say things haven't changed. Over the years, the husband and wife team have transformed a simple “white box” storefront into a Mediterranean getaway, complete with imported tile and artwork.
Taste any of them, and you might recognize a distinct accent. "The recipes, the dough, it’s all from New York and New Jersey,” Steve said, thanks to a good friend of theirs who helped inspire their venture.
"We've constantly been reinvesting in not only the menu but the interior as well,” said Steve. "Twice a year, we bring in a chef who camps out for a
Case in point, try the Luca Brazi: grilled salmon with artichokes in a caper-lemon sauce plus sautéed vegetables. At $14, it’s an offer you shouldn’t refuse. What’s missing from Gio’s kitchen is just as important in my book: “No microwave. No cheating,” according to Steve. That means each sauce, pizza topping, what have you, is sautéed to order just before hitting the plate and the table. You know, like it oughta be. - Continued on Page 17

“Wings Over Houston Airshow strives to bring new, exciting aviation demonstrations and exhibits each year “We appreciate our loyal volunteers, sponsors, fans, and members of the media as the event could not be a success without each and every one of you.” Bill Roach Executive Director of Wings Over Houston Airshow
WINGS OVER HOUSTON: From Page 9 Other highlights of the show include performances and displays of vintage warplanes, modern military aircraft, civilian aerobatic pilots and numerous exhibits and activities. Ticket Information: Tickets can be purchased in advance by visiting www.wingsoverhouston.com or by calling 888-4- FLYSHOW. Tickets can be purchased at the gate on show days, but premium reserved seats sell out early. General admission tickets will also available at area Kroger stores by mid- to late-September. The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Wings Over Houston Airshow is a non-profit 501(c)(3) community event produced by a volunteer effort of the Gulf Coast Wing, Houston Wing, and Tora! Tora! Tora! of the Commemorative Air Force, with support from the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston, Texas Legends Flying Museum, Vietnam War Flight Museum, Lewis Air Legends and Collings Foundation West. The Airshow is dedicated to showcasing vintage World War II aircraft, along with the thrills of modern aviation. One of the top air shows in the United States in its category, the CAF Wings Over Houston Airshow attracts more than 90,000 festival goers throughout Houston as well as from around
the globe. The 2016 Airshow benefits the CAF Wings Over Houston Airshow Scholarship Program, Aviation Career Education Academy, Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Westchase Rotary Club and the Commemorative Air Force aircraft restoration and flying historical programs, in addition to numerous other nonprofit participating organizations. About the Commemorative Air Force: The Commemorative Air Force honors the men and women who built, maintained, and flew in these airplanes during World War II. The organization believes that is best accomplished by maintaining the airplanes in flying condition; taking the airplanes to the people allowing them to experience the sight and sound of the aircraft in flight. Collecting, restoring and flying vintage historical aircraft for more than half a century, the Commemorative Air Force ranks as one of the largest private air forces in the world. The CAF is dedicated to Honoring American Military Aviation through flight, exhibition and remembrance. A non-profit educational association, the CAF has more than 13,000 members and a fleet of 165 airplanes distributed throughout the country to 76 CAF units for care and operation. For more information,
TORA, TORA, TORA: From Page 10 Over the years, "Tora, Tora, Tora" has brought both American and Japanese veterans together to celebrate the spirit of cooperation our two nations have enjoyed for more than 50 years. At air shows throughout the country, Japanese veterans living, working, and visiting in this country have had an opportunity to meet with the Tora gang and join with American veterans in a sprit of brotherhood and friendship that only former servicemen can experience. During the average year, Tora participates in 12 to 16 air shows with 8 to 10 Tora aircraft participating in each show. In addition, each performance includes approximately 61 pyrotechnic effects. The average Tora show requires the coordinated effort of a minimum of 20 to 26 individuals both in the air and on the ground. As one air show industry publication noted, “Flying and working with a keen sense of spirit and camaraderie, the men and women of Tora set themselves apart from other air show acts by exhibiting a professionalism that over the years has earned them the distinction as one of the best acts in the industry." This excellence was recognized formally in December 2001 when Tora was presented with the Art Scholl Award for Showmanship. This award is one of the two highest distinctions awarded by ICAS, the premiere air show industry trade association. Ten years later, the Wings Over Houston Airshow awarded Tora, Tora, Tora the 2011 Lloyd P. Nolen Lifetime Achievement in Aviation Award, which honors individuals, organi-

zations, companies and corporations dedicated to the promotion or advancement of aviation. This level of achievement is truly extraordinary when one considers that Tora is comprised entirely of volunteers. Every single person associated with Tora has volunteered his/her time, skills and financial resources to accomplish one simple feat -- telling of a true story, a piece of history. In this respect, Tora is more than just another air show act. Tora is a team of volunteers dedicated to an air show act that can best be described as a living history museum. As the pilots taxi for takeoff, Tora ground crew and Tora Bomb Squad members can frequently be seen saluting the pilots in the traditional Japanese fashion of a bow. From that moment in the air show until the final notes of Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless America" are heard as the smoke and fires from Tora finally fade away, the men and women of Tora are dedicated to one simple, yet powerful task... the telling of the story... "lest we forget". Dedication...Selflessness...Commitment... these terms are synonymous with the men and women of Tora, Tora, Tora. As one airshow promoter so aptly phrased it... "An airshow without TORA or the TORA Bomb Squad is just another fly in." Treat yourself to a day at the museum, the multi-sensory, 3-D, living history museum known as TORA, TORA, TORA. 2016 WINGS OVER HOUSTON: Special 75th anniversary demonstration of the attack at Pearl Harbor and other WWII air battles with aircraft from the Commemorative Air Force; Texas Flying Legends Museum, Lone Star Flight Museum, Collings Foundation with ground reenactments by the National USA Forces Museum and the Sixth Cavalry Historical Association. Many people have the opportunity to travel to visit a museum but rarely does the museum come to visit you. Attending an airshow where Tora, Tora, Tora is performing is like having a 3-D Museum come to visit you. "Tora, Tora, Tora" is the Commemorative Air Force's recreation of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that signaled the beginning of the American involvement in World War II. Designed as a living history lesson, "Tora, Tora, Tora" is intended as a memorial to all the soldiers on both sides who gave their lives for their countries. Tora, Tora, Tora began in 1972, when six replica Japanese aircraft used in the movie of the same name were donated to the CAF. The Gulf Coast Wing requested assignment of the aircraft and began developing an act for presentation at air shows. The act debuted at the Galveston Air Show on June 25, 1972. By 1977, Tora had gained national exposure. By 1978, Tora began to make international appearances in Canada and Mexico. In 1991 Tora participated extensively in the 50th anniversary year

commemorations of Pearl Harbor and in 1992, Tora tackled the challenge of sending two replica Zeros to Alaska to participate in the 50th anniversary commemoration of the raid on Dutch Harbor. Throughout the 90s, Tora has been in demand at air shows throughout the country and Tora aircraft and pilots have participated in the filming of many movies and documentaries. The motto of the Commemorative Air Force and the "Tora" act is "Lest We Forget." "Tora, Tora, Tora", as other Commemorative Air Force flying history recreations, is not intended to promote nationalism or glorify war. The intent of the Tora group is to help generations of individuals throughout the world born after World War II understand that war does not discriminate in the pain it causes and that courageous individuals on both sides lose their lives. The pilots and crew of "Tora, Tora, Tora" are proud of the reputation they have developed with veterans of the Japanese military as an accurate lesson on the history of the time and as a tribute to themselves and their comrades. - Continued On Page 11
