New Restaurant Report:

OPUS OCEAN GRILLE casts wider net for Lakefront Diners By Jason Goodrich The team that brought popular Opus Bistro to Clear Lake Shores is doubling down on upscale waterfront dining. The seafood-centric Opus Ocean Grille opens its doors this month just a short paddle from its Bistro brother. The new Opus promises to follow the same winning formula of upscale setting and service. What’s different, according to co-owner Charlie Felts, is that this new work encompasses the water in every way, starting with the stunning setting and the freshest catches. Tucked away in the resort-like grounds of the Watergate Yachting Club, Opus Ocean Grille feels upscale inside and out. The harbor and its sailboats gently bob just feet beyond the two main patios. Palms and live oaks surround the perimeter, creating a private getaway vibe. Inside, a glassed-in atrium welcomes guests with views of the timber loft dining room with an onyx bar and the water beyond. The broad spiral staircase gives way to a blown-glass chandelier straight out of 20,000 Leagues and the second-floor dining room. Cream leather and linens on dark wood create a timeless, rich feel. Panoramic windows offer 180 degrees of waterfront bliss. The scene appropriately set, the table is next. Felts said there will be five to six fresh fish on the menu every day. A sneak peek at the menu showed intriguing choices like Golden Tile, Cobia and Grouper in addition to more familiar (but no-less-tasty) names like Red Snapper, Swordfish and Flounder. Dishes will range from $12 to $32, quite reasonable for the area and the polish that Ocean Grille shows. The shellfish selection is just as impressive. Oysters from the Gulf are joined by cousins from the other coasts. Crabs come in every variety from blue to Dungeness and Alaskan King. Fresh Maine lobsters are on hand, too. No need to go so far afield for shrimp, of course, which show up everywhere on the menu – always a good thing in my book. - Continued on Page 10

Opus Ocean Grille: Cont. From Page 9 Besides seafood, the Opus Ocean Grille team goes deep on two other things near and dear: wine and sauce. According to Felts, the wine list will be under-the-radar values like at his Bistro and, surprisingly, majority red. He debunks the white-with-fish rule with his observation that “people tend to drink what they like, no matter what’s on the menu.” Fair enough. The final list isn’t complete yet, but should feel and be priced similar to the Bistro list. Another item guests tend to like a lot at his restaurants: martinis. They are prominently featured on the drinks program. Full bars on both levels serve up beer, wine and mixed drinks to both dining rooms and the three patios. As for other elixirs at the table, sauces play a prominent role. “Both Chris (Simons, executive chef) and I love sauce,” said Felts. He’s speaking of the generous pools of fresh-made sauces on appetizers, entrees and desserts. So when’s Ocean Grille going to open officially? “We’ll practice until I see the staff looks confident,” Felts said. “Once they know, I’ll walk in and say ‘We’re open today.’” At first, Ocean Grille will keep dinner and weekend brunch hours. Early diners will get a chance to sample and give feedback on dishes. “We love feedback, too.” Even when you happen to eat somewhere else, you will want to consider stopping in to finish off your meal with dessert. The candidate list is extensive, delicious and all made in-house. “The white chocolate bread pudding will blow your head off,” said Felts proudly. And don’t forget – lots of sauce.

Introducing Hot Shotz Your Local Improv Troupe By Domino Taylor An area group of actors have joined together and formed an entertaining improv troupe called the Hot Shotz. Under the production of Charlotte Jackson of Santa Fe, this group will take the stage at Franca’s Italian Restaurant on 1101 E. NASA Parkway, Nassau Bay on November 15 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with a $5 cash cover for the show.

NEXT SHOW: November 15 • 7pm (Doors Open at 6:30pm) Franca’s Italian Restaurant at 1101 E. NASA Parkway

This group is made up of actors from all the area community theatres, from Houston to Galveston, who auditioned to have a position in the spotlight with this hilarious team called Hot Shotz. The group performs improvisations on stage with subjects, scenarios and accents and more from the audience and their suggestions. The actors perform numerous games similar to Whose Line Is It Anyway?, the famous British television show that was originally a radio show and then in the States, a long running and current comedy television series. Each performance has a host and a panel of four to six performers who tackle spontaneous improvised skits with random, and sometimes off-the-wall, ideas from the dining audience. With very little information and a whole lot of imagination, the Hot Shotz depict a variety of characters and accents in scenes and songs. After one game is over the next begins and anything can happen, all with audience participation. The Hot Shotz are Angela Case, Clear Lake; Bill Krause, Houston; Dianne Foussac, Seabrook; Domino Taylor, Seabrook; Chad Greenough, Bayou Vista; Jada August, Clear Lake; Judy Alhorn, Seabrook; Matt Schell, Seabrook; Steve Forgus, La Marque; Teri Muse, Friendswood; Vicki Barosh, Brazoria County and under the direction of Bev Forgus from La Marque with League City’s Andrew Mentzel as theatre tech and Jeremiah Maddix as media coordinator. The founding charter members are Charlotte Jackson, Teri Muse and Steve and Bev Forgus. All of the Hot Shotz are experienced actors and have acted many years in theatre productions and succeed with hilarity acting out the theatre sports type games in a game show format, which is part of the comedy also. The cozy and romantic Franca’s Real Italian Restaurant offers menu specials and appetizers and desserts, along with a great wine list and friendly staff. For more information, log on to their website, francasrealitalian.com or call 281-488-2207. Make a date night of good dining and wine with plenty of laughs watching the Hot Shotz perform improv.

THE PAINT WHI

SC

Featured Artist: David Camp

SPERER

Seabrook artist, David Camp believes in an art concept he calls the “holistic ideal.” He defined, “Paint does what it wants. It has its own mind.” His theory is as interesting and mystical as his works. Yet, Camp’s sense of paint potential which other people may not initially have seen help create his completely quintessential art. Camp’s transformations of paint-can lids to art are great examples. Growing up, Camp admitted he never took art seriously. He said, “I would just doodle on the back of my homework.” A friend noticed the doodle art and told Camp he should save each drawing. Fortunately for Camp, his friend’s advice paid off when he needed a fine art credit while attending the College of the Mainland. Camp told, “My design class loved what I had.” With only a few community art classes and mostly self-taught abilities, Camp declared he “took it from there.” He has since participated in Galveston art walks and was a featured artist for a Heights area art show. “My apartment is full of art,” shared Camp. He said he tries to put stuff up for sale as he pushes it out. Camp explained he creates with anything he can get his hands on. The majority of his materials are donated such as old house paints and even dry wall mud. Camp likes to work with other found items such a plastic planters. The recycled, repurposed items along with Camp’s artistic guidance generate intriguing pieces rich with texture and color. Camp stated, “I also like working really big.” He paints large 8x10foot mural pieces. Camp disclosed his preference to working with what he’s found or been given. Camp often buys canvas paintings at resale locations. “I do better with old canvas than blank. It has previous life to it; a history behind it,” he said. Camp enjoys giving his pieces as gifts. He explained that the gift of art is everlasting and more appreciated. He confessed, It is hard to let go of a part of yourself, but it makes more room to grow and make more art.” To view additional art works by David Camp contact Drcartwork@aol.com or www.facebook.com/DavidRyanCamp or Instagram: Drcartwork. Currently his works are on display at Art of Coffee.

TOE JAM BALL

COCK-EYED SEAGULL

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 31 TOE JAM BALL - When word that classical dance instructor, Deanne Luprete, had fallen to neurological problems with the feet, the fantastic folks at the Cock-eyed Seagull rallied to the call. Family and friends came out to support this ever-smiling sunny personality with an over-the-top banquet table and perfect autumn weather. The crowd that day enjoyed live music from Hourglass, Cisco & Angie, Greg Stephens, Tod Marsella and a blistering series from Lynn Raggio playing along with Cisco, Myrna Sanders, Mark Fenton & C.J. Philpot. The live music typically is exceptionally magical at benefits and today was no exception. Thanks to the great staff at the Cock-eyed Seagull, the fantastic cooks, volunteers and to all those who came out to support. Cheers! Our hometown baseball team didn’t get to play in the final game of the season and our hometown football team shows us what it is to dig in and not give up. The elections have arrived, the world did not end, and it’s time to come together again. Holiday season is around the corner, a time to take stock of matters, a time to be spent with family and friends. Several have left the area and moved on. New friends are arriving whom we’ve yet to meet and need to get to it. We’ve got a dandy gig here in a place we call the SCENE. Be sure and keep the latest issue on your coffee table, in your car and at work, so when visitors come calling, you can be the one

half a country apart, I sense we will see more of these cats at venues across the country spreading to others great music and fun times we enjoyed locally for so many years. SOMETHING NEW - In case you haven’t noticed, The SCENE has changed to an all-color, glossy. Thanks to all of you readers for supporting our advertisers in making this possible. Now it’s time to step up our game on the color photography-front and with that in mind, a stop in to Jackie’s Brickhouse to catch Madigan was in order. I was curious if my setup was up for handling whatever lightman, Eric Wolfe, could serve up in the visual light spectrum. What a workout! On the audio end, soundman Dale Lance had the sound dialed in beyond Madigan @ Jackie’s Brickhouse simply sounding good and into the realm of “feeling good” –- a total body experience that music lovers crave. Those of you who are new to the area and haven’t caught a Madigan show, this is your band if you are into the likes of Van Halen, Ozzy, Rush, Journey & Satriani. When your friends come in for the holidays, take them to a Madigan show. They’ll think you’re genius. SOMETHING NEW PART 2 - Switching to the new full glossy magazine has meant changes to production schedules and unfortunately last month, I accidently left out some great action of at the South Side Roller Derby as the Golden Sk8 Champions took on the Elite Team. I’m not sure who won the games that evening, despite lots of competitive skating, bumping, crashing and spills. I recall vividly both teams being happy and laughing at the end. These ladies are classy. I’m looking forward to catching more of this action in the months ahead! - Continued on Page 30

December’s Pirate Guild Night will be a great time to join in on some seasonal pirate fun, too! “December’s Guild Night theme is Bad Pirate Santa! The Bilge Pumps, a band from the Dallas area, have a pirate-themed Christmas album, hence the Bad Pirate Santa theme,” Railean added, though the Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar is a great place to visit, as a wide variety of live music and parties (think island-inspired: Jimmy Buffet, steel bands, and more) are showcased year-round. Railean is also a great place to bring out-of-town family and friends this holiday season – or any time – for tours of their distillery and sampling their wide variety of spirits, including their two newest rums, Railean Lime Rum and Railean Grand Cuvee Rum. The gift shop also includes a variety of great holiday gifts, including many pirate-themed items. Railean has a private room available for parties, happy hours, meetings, private tours, and their patio is pet-friendly for leashed dogs (with up-to-date vaccinations). For more information on tours, the Pirate Guild, live music, events and more, visit www.railean.com and Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar’s Facebook page. You must be 21 years or older with valid ID to enter the Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar.

PATIO SEASON - With the heat wave broken, we joined up with the patio wine and diners at La Poz. Ryan On the Seabrook-EuGuidry @ ropean style patio was La Poz Ryan Guidry performing the entire set of British Invasion hits along with an occasional ’60s acoustic hippie hits filling the air with an enjoyable acoustic sound. TALENT - I spent an evening with a great music alongside appreciative audience at Katie’s in October, taking in enjoyable evening with Luther and the Healers. Ever notice the way good music makes you feel good? Luther Rada was in great form as his Luther and the Healers @ Katie’s hometown Chicago Cubs made it into the World Series and the atmosphere that evening at Katie’s was sweeter than ever – Tasty on the ears and from watching the dance floor, perfect for moving and grooving. I was going over the November calendar with Bob Emmons – they’ve got a great lineup in store. Over the years, I’ve made mention that if you and your guests are in need of some of the best live music in the area, you can’t go wrong at Katie’s. According to Bob, they work hard at consistently booking good talent –something that one is not only born with, but a trait that is continually developed over time. And there you have it! With the holiday season ahead, talent is what you are sure to get at Katie’s! To be continued… HOMECOMING AND SNOW CONES - ‘Tis pigskin season and while not all teams get to sit on a Top-10 ranking, homecoming weekend is always a special weekend indeed. In October, partiers celebrated the return of Southbound on the Railean’s Buccaneer Bar stage. According to the band, it’s been over six months since the two have played together and yet after hoisting up the traditional toast, it was as if the magic never left - Neat when that happens! We had out-of-town guests and took them to The Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar for an evening of bar-hopping fun. Smart move! Railean is a wonderful place to make a great first impression. My mom scored copies of Southbound’s two albums “Hammock On The Keys” and “Live from Cozumel” and has been playing them a lot. Not everybody in the United States has heard tropical rock and her first impression of the music was “it’s bright, happy, musiSouthbound @ cal, and fun!!” Railean Rum

The School of Rock entertained School of Rock @ Texas Classic Rockin’ and impressed even the brazened Food Truck Rally musical veterans in the audience waiting for their turn later in the day. The Band Hennessey blew things apart and won over new listeners with the dual vocal attack from Ashley & Heather. Southbound 45 won me over successfully bringing together Country and Metal into a genre they call “Gruntry.” I won the “late-comer-to-the-party” award catching for the first time, Victim – a Houston classic rock cover band that plays the classic cover songs nobody else plays, yet what listeners know and enjoy. written by Rebecca and John Stoll covering vocals and no less than a dozen instruments, featuring Max Dyer (cello) and Kevin Hardin (fiddle), produced by Brad Sayles and recorded at The Farmhouse (Vanderpool, Texas) and the Outhouse (Houston). This first-class production includes a full-color booklet with lyrics and anecdotes – the way CDs used to be. Listening to the music, reading the lyrics, I felt crystal clear intelligence throughout on the level unfelt since the days of Carole King’s Tapestry - “Watershed” is now on my benchmark album list for independent artists.

How cool is that? I have a soft spot for benefit volunteers, venue staff, and especially instructors, so whenever they get a chance to show off their chops, it’s always worth checking out. No wonder the students at School of Rock are so good! Grifters and Shills @ T-bone Tom’s

AMERICAN ROOTS WITH A SPLASH OF AC/DC - The bands at the Texas Classic Rockin’ Food Truck Rally was still ringing in my ears when I dropped into T-Bone Tom’s. On the stage was Grifters and Shills – This is the first time I have seen them exclusively play a show in several years. This is what I would call a perfect act for the patio season if a night of pleasant intelligent conversation and thoughtful entertainment is what you are seeking. With school back in session and the heat wave broken, the audience under the palapa were entirely locals starting the evening grabbing a bite for dinner, yet ended up staying to enjoy an entire evening of Rebecca and John Stoll. Andy Upchurch told me once to “always pay attention to the two piece groups”. Between the two of them included two microphones, two Fishman amplifiers, and at least a dozen instruments playing what several of us in the audience described amongst ourselves as Americana Folk with a generous splash of AC/DC. We were close… A much more accurate description comes from their website griftersand shills.com: “His was hard rock and heavy metal. Hers was the classic sound of the East Texas piney woods. Theirs was a fiery collision, bearing forth a sound that was at once novel and instantly familiar--nodding to roots seated deep in high lonesome harmonies and back porch blues, while peering out at a scorched path bound by modern assertions and contemporary commentary. This two-person, dozen-instrument act provides a show full of sound a fury, punctuated with raw, quiet vulnerability.“ Bingo!! When I listened to their CD , “Watershed,” my blood pressure suddenly goes into relaxed mode and my mind enters a peaceful space I don’t visit often enough. This all-original compilation was

Loose Notes by Andy Eng

Wow! October was one fun month! Much like the Blue Angels at the Wings Over Houston Air Show, the month flew by entirely too fast. It was good crossing paths with many of you, hearing your stories all while taking in outstanding live music shows. We enjoyed quite a few new acts in October. Let’s run down some of what all went on.

ALMOST FAMOUS - Over the past several months, I’ve been enjoying following the musicians develop at the School of Rock as they put their talent out for show on local stages – their poise, skills, street team effort and fan base are impressive. This month, I thought I would make mention something a bit different about this bunch, their instructors…. At Scout Bar in October, I arrived late to the Punk Star Full Throttle show as the young musicians were winding up, packing up and getting ready for school the next day. On stage was a lineup setting up that I didn’t recognize and hung around to catch Almost Famous, a fun musical Almost Famous @ Scout Bar group of the school’s instructors and staff getting a chance to play a gig. - Continued on Page 35

Texas TNT: Continued From Page 48 Ramona previously played in the successful all-female band Cowboy’s Nightmare for ten years, a country rock band which toured the US and even Europe. “We had so much fun. The response we got was amazing. Cowboy’s Nightmare songs are still available on iTunes,” she said. As far as the formation of Texas TNT, though, it took some shifting to get it “right,” something many bands often experience. “We had tried some other combinations awhile before,” Ramona said, “but it really did not gel until the three of us played together. In addition to guitar and drums, Ronnie and Ian add variety and depth with their lead vocals and vocal harmonies, giving the band the ability to cover a very wide range of musical styles. For the first five years we played cover songs. In the past few years, we have been writing, playing and recording our own songs in addition to playing covers.” Texas TNT’s covers—with Ramona’s powerful voice bursting through on each song, at once unique yet reminiscent of many female rock greats – of Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, Janis Joplin, Black Sabbath—and of course, AC/DC (“TNT”) – are their favorites to play, and the songs people really love hearing. “When we play the cover shows, we play the classic hit songs the audience remembers, and introduce them to our favorite classic hits, occasionally introducing one of our original songs,” said Ramona. However, shows featuring their all-original songs have been met with resounding popularity as well. “We played at Scout Bar in August and got such a great response for our original show that we were recently asked back,” she said, so more original shows are in the works in the area.

THE SCENE

Texas TNT can be found playing all over the Houston area several times a week, with some stops in Clear Lake and Galveston every month as well. “We love playing all over town. We just played an interesting place in Dickinson called Hugh and Jeff’s Car Wash, where they actually do wash cars [as people enjoy the music]. We have fun playing at Outrigger’s Seafood, and sometimes play the Rum Shack in Galveston. Texas TNT will also have more shows coming up at Blue Collar Bar in Pasadena,” Ramona said. Whether it’s a show of covers or their new all-original songs, the audience is guaranteed an explosive fun night of rock at every Texas TNT show.

Plus Seldom and Astoryia. With Six Gun Sound, Indaskies, Ganesha & Andy Cortez on the Outdoor Acoustic Stage!

“TNT means dynamite, and we are like that AC/DC song! We want to give everyone a high energy rock and roll show and for them to have a good time,” Ramona said. Texas TNT will soon be blowing up several dates throughout November in Houston. In the local area, make sure to catch them Sunday, November 20 at Outrigger’s from 3 to 7 p.m., November 23 at Jackie’s Brickhouse in Kemah from 7 to 11 p.m. and November 26 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at The Saloon in San Leon. How long have you been a bartender + How long at Jackie's Brickhouse: 17 years. With Jackie’s for 5 years this coming February. What do you love about working at JBH? I love that it's a single-owner business, where all your hard work and efforts are always recognized. Jackie aka "Mama" treats us all like her own children and so does our GM John Barrera. My long-time regulars have also all become life-long friends, and I appreciate their loyalty. YOUR favorite day of the week to work at JBH & why? Oddly enough it’s Monday. It’s a fresh start to my 5-day week. Plus it doesn’t hurt that it’s also happy hour all day with $3 fireball shots. Top 3 drinks you recommend to customers at JBH? 1: Blackberry Mojito. Made with only fresh fruit and mint; 2: Jackie’s Rita; 3: Bloody Marys

Jackie’s Brickhouse 1053 Marina Bay Dr. • Kemah

Do you have a signature drink you do best above all or are most proud of? Any of my martinis. A classic Dirty Martini with vodka of your choice is best. My husband would disagree and say it's my Bloody Marys since that's why we got together 8 years ago. (He kept coming back for them, but I think it was just to flirt with me!) It worked! Are there any new drinks you’re excited about? More and more guests are requesting older traditional drinks such as Old Fashions. I love making the classics, and I love that they are making a comeback . The most rewarding part of your job? Seeing guests come back again and again just because they enjoyed their time with me. Hearing stories from so many different guests is always an interesting plus. What do you do when not at work? (Hobbies?) I'm mostly mom to my 2-year-old son Troy III. Other than that, I do enjoy riding

on the back of my husband’s Harleys through all the tiny towns in Texas. "Stoop parties" with my best friend Megan Ross are also a great escape when there isn't enough time for a trip. 5 words that describe you: Sarcastic; Honest (sometimes too much); Funny; Witty & Easy-going Favorite thing about the Bay Area? The Bay itself and the overall calm it gives people. Best tip you ever got: Don't take any wooden nickels What do you love about Bartending? That it's something different everyday. You can't get bored with everyday being a total mystery as to what might take place. Never a dull moment. Who inspires you? -- or -- What motivates you? My family is my biggest motivator and what inspires me to make everyday the best I can make it.

Hot & New at Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar

’Tis the Season to Aaargh, Matey! By Sarah Piña Pirates, parrots, parties, and rum punch abound at The Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar, as do handcrafted rum of course – along with vodka, whiskey and blue agave spirits December 1: Railean Pirate Guild Night, down by the water in Bad Pirate Santa with The Bilge Pumps San Leon, Texas. Al(Pirate-Christmas music!) 6:30 to 10 p.m. though many in the area may be familiar with the fun pirate-island atmosphere and quality spirits Kelly Railean provides at Railean Distillery for nearly 10 years now, a variety of seasonal pirate-induced fun events await guests in November and December! The Buccaneer Bar and Tasting Room, in service for a little over two years now because of changed liquor laws (thank you, Texas!), is now open with extended hours (Tuesday to Friday, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday from noon to 9 p.m.) and serving even more of their delicious concoctions. Craft cocktail specialist James Bradshaw is a new addition as well, ready to serve up the latest of their now over 170 custom cocktails. The newest options include a “Tiki List,” which will be featured during The Railean Buccaneer Bar’s new Tiki Tuesdays. “We’re going to have specials on all of our tiki drinks and discounts starting in November,” Railean added. Both new and old Pirate Guild members can surely benefit from the cocktail list expansion. But what’s the Pirate Guild, one may ask? Those who join, receive a stainless steel mug for use on each visit, a personalized badge and pirate name and even a “pirate personality.” Since it’s inception in 2015, the popular “club” has acquired more than 1,300 members, who all enjoy special perks at the Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar. “We have a big event the first Thursday of every month called Pirate Guild Night. Anyone can join in the fun! You don’t have to be a member to attend Pirate Guild Night, but if other members see you haven’t joined, you more than likely will be talked into it,” Railean said with a giggle. “We have a special greeting, live music, contests, and advance notice of upcoming events. It’s so much fun!” she said. Members can also receive an “award of achievement” of sorts.

November 18: Chris Connerty & Moses Bayou Boys (rock & roll) will be rocking the house 6 to 9 p.m. December 10: Sugarcane Crush! Railean’s own sugarcane will be crushed with their antique cane press, on and off all day from noon to 6 p.m. December 16: Charlie Imes will be entertaining us 6 to 9 p.m. (trop-rock music) Don’t forget to buy your stainless steel mug and join in the fun with the Railean Pirate Guild! Leashed dogs with up to date vaccinations are allowed on the outdoor patio! *Must be 21 or older with valid ID to enter the Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar

“Once you complete the drink list (60 cocktails), you get a pirate eye patch with your name on it hung up at the bar. After the other 40 tiki drinks, you get a tiki mug. And August is the anniversary of the guild, so we always throw a big party during that month,” Railean said. - Continued on Page 32

Stuttgarden Tavern Kemah is located at 609 Bradford on the second floor of Toucan Alley. For more information on the Galveston and Texas City locations, visit www.stuttgardentavern.com or their Facebook pages.

This is apparent as both of their newest locations are ever-expanding and truly offer something for everyone. “Our Kemah location is our biggest, with 52 taps. Some of them are reserved for our regular German beers, while many others showcase the craft breweries in the area, like Texas Beer Refinery, Galveston Island, Karbach and Saint Arnold. Everything rotates based on what’s seasonal,” Groenewold said.

For those wanting to explore a little taste of it all, Stuttgarden offers beer flights of four 4 oz. pours. In the liquor department, one of their top drinks is a Cherry Limeade, which Mortensen notes “tastes just like a Sonic Drive-In cherry limeade,” though they have a variety of other popular specialty cocktails as well. And the food? With Chef Steven Navarro, a graduate of Cordon Bleu in Los Angeles overseeing the menus, hungry guests are in for some incredible dishes. “Everything is fresh. We make pretty

In addition to the German staples, the diverse menu includes American fare, too – burgers, sandwiches, salads, wings – and a several other international offerings. New Club & Pub Report

Prost! Stuttgarden Tavern Opens Kemah Location By Sarah Piña Kemah has long been known for a variety of fun events, restaurants, bars, nightlife, and water recreation. Stuttgarden Tavern, a full-service bar and restaurant serving food, beer, wine, and liquor, is the latest addition for Kemah visitors and its surrounding residents. Stuttgarden Tavern opened its first location on The Strand in Galveston in 2014. Following their recipe of success serving fresh food made inhouse and a rotation of the area’s latest and seasonal craft beers on the island, partners John Mortensen and Derek Groenewold teamed up again to open a Stuttgarden Tavern at Mall of the Mainland in Texas City this past April. Currently, the popular hangout offers both indoor and outdoor seating including two outdoor televisions. The Texas City space is in the process of expanding into a 6,000square-foot facility as an indoor, air-conditioned beer garden. Stay tuned to the SCENE for expansion details. Kemah is the latest location to join their roster. Their doors opened the final week of October. Looking for a fun German-inspired name, Mortensen and Groenewold decided on, Stuttgarden Tavern. The name encapsulates what they offer: a laid-back atmosphere (“not fancy, but not a dive bar, a great place to chill” Mortensen notes) and American and European-influenced food and drinks. The name, Groenewold explained, is derived from a town northwest of Münich. “I love visiting cities all over Germany, but I love the town of Stuttgart, he said. “There they hold HarvestFest every year, similar to Oktoberfest,” adding that they were careful to not use the traditional German spelling for a beer garden (“garten”) – because although they do have a wide variety of beer on tap, they indeed serve so much more. - Continued on Page 46

TEXAS TNT, DYNAMITE! Female-Fronted Rock Band Blows Up Local Scene By Sarah Piña The lights are swirling, a familiar rock anthem blows from the speakers, and a gritty, soulful voice projects from behind swinging long, strawberry blonde hair. Those familiar with the local rock scene know this must be no other than Texas TNT, the self-described “Texas heavy metal blues rock” band which exploded onto the Houston music circuit in April 2009.

The Band Hennessy Sat., November 12 WATERS EDGE WINE & CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL

Seven years ago, Ramona Pace (bass guitar/vocals), Ronnie Pace (lead guitar/vocals), and Ian Carroll (drums/vocals) came together to form what would become Texas TNT, a now staple of the Clear Lake music circuit. And the rest, as they say, is history. Though all three have always been musicians, and continue to work in other businesses, as many musicians often do (Ronnie has his own guitar business, Pace Guitar Repair; Ramona teaches fitness classes, and helps with the guitar business; Ian works in construction), Ramona has set herself apart and has broken through in the music industry as a successful female rocker in her own right, something of a challenge in a predominantly-male field.
