ALL ABOARD THE LOCO TRAIN! Metalachi Returns to Clear Lake in December By Sarah Piña “Loco, but that’s how it goes!…” an Ozzy Osbourne-inspired voice sings amidst a backdrop of violin, trumpet, guitar, guitarrón, and a stage filled with musicians reminiscent of the greatest rock and metal icons, all with large sombreros. It’s definitely a version of “Crazy Train”— but wait, is that metal, or… mariachi?

Wood N Wind Fri., December 9 NOAH’S ARK

It’s Metalachi, the world’s only heavy metal mariachi band in full effect, pumping out metal mariachi versions of “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” “Back in Black,” and “Enter Sandman”— and it’s an experience unlike anything else. The group that began as a family of traditional mariachi musicians at a number of events several years ago has today evolved into a powerhouse of inimitable musical-cultural fusion. With monikers and stage presence resonant of the most recognizable names in rock, Vega de la Rocka (vocals), Nacho Picante (guitarrón), Paco Halen (guitar), Kyla Vera (violin), and El Cucuy (trumpet), now tour nationally and will soon return with their unique brand to Scout Bar on December 10. “We started playing almost seven years ago,” master trumpeteer El Cucuy said. “We were all doing straight up mariachi for hire, performing everywhere at events in Los Angeles. One time at a quinceañera, we went ahead and began playing some of the Black Sabbath songs we loved, but in mariachi style, and people went crazy. So at that point we knew we should do more of that, and that’s how Metalachi was born,” he said.

Sheila Marshall Sun., December 11 T-BONE TOM’S

The breakthrough, like anything in the music industry, wasn’t easy at first, however. “At the beginning, people would come with such low expectations, thinking it would be something that they would just want to make fun of, a joke. And then they realized how good the musicians were,” El Cucuy said, noting that many of the best mariachi musicians can actually be found in Los Angeles. “Everyone thinks Mexico City or Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico when they think of mariachi, but realistically there’s more mariachis in Los Angeles than anywhere else in the world. It is the mariachi capital of the world,” he said. Soon Warren Moscow, their now-manager would come into the picture to help develop the band into what it is today, and the group now counts rock greats such as Billy Idol, Dave Navarro, Dave Lombardo of Slayer, Vinnie Paul of Pantera, and Eric Wilson of Sublime as fans, some of whom have joined the band several times on stage during set—further proof that this is a phenomenon and not just any concert. Metalachi is truly a full-on, multi-faceted performance that involves both music and comedic relief. - Continued on Page 33

Local Music Spotlight:

ASTORYIA

By Sarah Piña As Clear Lake continues to draw renowned bands to venues in the area, the local music scene is growing right along with it, gaining well-deserved recognition from the shared spotlight. The latest in such ventures will bring major national act Saving Abel (known for their hit “Addicted,” which in 2008 rose to No. 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart, and continues to get airplay on rock stations nationwide) to America’s Ice House in Texas City on December 16. The Scars Heal in Time, performances from 9-year-old drummer Kross Patrick from the School of Rock, as well as a set by local powerhouse Astoryia are also included on this non-stop rock ticket. Though Astoryia is decidedly the newest band on the ticket, they have quickly gained recognition as one of the most exciting up-and-coming bands to originate out of the Houston area. The current lineup includes Mike Carroll (guitar), Trey Klecka (guitar), Josh Padgett (bass), and Tommy Gamble (drums), and vocalist Patrick Gamble, who describes their sound as hard rock and metal, though, because of the group’s varying musical interests, meshes to become more melodic at times.

Blaggards Fri., December 9 T-BONE TOM’S

LA Roxx Fri., December 9 SCOUT BAR

“We come from many different musical backgrounds and interests, so we all have our differences and ways about it, but at the end of the day, we come together, and it just works. We do some hard rock metal, but also softer, more melodic acoustic songs, so we tend to appeal to many audiences.” Part of the appeal to fans is also the stories they tell with their music. Though originally named after the street Carroll and Gamble once lived on together, this “storytelling” quality of Astoryia is also a big part of how the group was named. “I think that is what really connects with the audience, the very relatable situations that we talk about with our music, which really does tell a story,” he said. “Even on our upcoming full-length album, which we expect to be released this spring, the music itself tells a story because of the track sequence on the album.” - Continued on Page 30

Roger’s Bar & Grill: Massive Venue Offering More Than 10,000 Square Feet Of Fun! Roger’s Bar & Grill, located at 1271 Deke Slayton Blvd. in League City, is a lively local hangout with a sports-theme décor. The venue is housed inside a hurricane proof twostory building that took three years to construct. It is this commitment to quality that is Roger’s Bar & Grill’s trademark.

Meet Chef Andre Cartier Chef Cartier brings 40 years of restaurant experience to Roger’s. This includes roughly 15 years locally, many of which were spent running the kitchen for one of the area’s more popular waterfront venues before joining the staff of the area’s largest corporate dining brands. Background / Experience: I attended the culinary school of “Chef George Cartier” my father and mentor. At the age of 13, I began washing dishes, prepping food and cooking alongside my father working my way up in the culinary world. Working with my father allowed me to learn a variety of techniques, which has given me the ability to cook anything from Cajun and soups to seafood and Italian along with good, oldfashioned, down-home meals. - Continued on Page 44

THE SCENE

The entire building is wellequipped with plenty of seating, a huge bar, many HDTVs (plus a couple of 12-foot projection TVs). Any seat in the house is a great seat to watch the Sunday NFL Ticket with Every NFL Game, every Sunday or college football game (showing all SEC & Big 10 Conference Football Games). Happy hour is Wednesday through Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. Enjoy a cold glass of one of the beers on tap or in a bottle, or order a drink from the full bar. Roger’s Bar & Grill presents live music Friday and Saturday nights. In December, Roger’s hosts quite the range of bands: The Goods Band, NC2 Cortés, The Band Hennessy, Mambo Jazz Kings, Hamilton Loomis and Outlaw Lynn. And then on New Year’s Eve, Andy & the Dreamsicles will be ringing in the New Year right as they take the stage on Saturday, December 31. Drink responsibly and party local at Roger’s Bar & Grill. In addition to live music, Roger’s Bar & Grill has an assortment of games including the latest and greatest Buck Hunter, numerous pool tables, and Golden Tee. Pick a lucky song from the Internet jukebox and have some fun! Let Roger’s Bar & Grill host your next personal or corporate event day or night. The venue is as nice as any hotel in the area with three rooms that each seat more than 100 people. Two private rooms each feature a beautiful mahogany bar. Chef Andre Cartier is happy to assist you in creating a special menu that is unique to your event. Call 281-334-1110 for more information. But you don’t have to have a special occasion to delight in their American and Italian cuisine. The steak and burgers rival the pricier restaurants. Roger’s Bar & Grill is open Mondays during football season from 4 to 11 p.m. with drink and food specials during the game. Check out this month’s ad for business hours, band line up and dinner specials. If you haven’t been to Roger’s Bar & Grill, it’s time to stop in and check it out!

Roger’s Chef Andre Cartier: From Page 45 Your Specialty: Over the years, I have prepared a wide range of dishes, but my speciality might be seafood, cajun and good old home-cooked comfort food. I’ve learned to take any food product and turn it into something everyone loves. Taking pride in what I create is important to me, as well as presentation and consistency. Adding a little love to everything I cook makes it all special! Two items I recommend at Roger’s are my Mango-Pico Fish Tacos and our Jack Daniels Ribeye. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? Yes, I’ve had the honor of preparing food for many people in the public eye. A personal highlight was preparing gumbo for Charlie Daniels while he was performing in Florida. I got the opportunity to personally deliver it to him. Great gumbo and great concert!

How long have you been a bartender + How long at Scotty's: I've been bartending for 6 years, starting out in restaurant bars. I'm coming up on my first year mark at Scotty’s. What do you love about working at Scotty's? What I love most about working at Scotty's is the people I'm working with and for. In a neighborhood bar set up, you have the opportunity to establish a real connection with every guest. Everyone I work with feels more like family than just coworkers. Our regulars at both locations are all amazing people from all walks of life that keep my job fun and fulfilling. YOUR favorite day of the week to work at Scotty's & why? Friday is my favorite day of the week to work just because I still get to see my daytime regulars for happy hour and also some new faces that only come out on the weekends. Top 3 drinks you recommend to customers at Scotty's? Our craft beer on tap is always rotating, so every time someone comes in, I always mention the latest beer we’ve got for them to try. The Pimm's Cup is popular at many other bars, but our version has ginger beer and tastes amazing, so I always recommend that for something different. My favorite thing to recommend, however, is our Bloody Mary. We infuse vodka with a variety of peppers, onions and garlic. Scott makes his own bacon salt for the rim and pickles spicy green beans for the garnish that people go crazy for. Are there any new drinks you're excited about? We are starting a new special at our South Shore location called “Pass the Tequila Fridays” featuring several different tequilas. We

Scotty’s On The Bay 3202 Marina Bay Dr., Kemah

Scotty’s Pub 10943 Scarsdale Blvd., Houston will have different variations of cocktails every week along with flights of tequilas available and shots. There are some interesting flavors I'm really excited for our guests to try. What do you do when not at work? (Hobbies?) I go to school full time at UHCL, so work and school take a lot of my time. When I'm off, I like to spend as much time with friends and family as possible. I love playing darts, watching sports and reading as much as I can. The most rewarding part of your job (emotionally)? I'm on my last semester for a psychology degree, so learning, understanding and making people happy is what my life revolves around. It is so satisfying for me to make someone a drink after they’ve had a long day or week or year, and for them to be a happier version of themselves because of it. - Continued on Page 36

Loose Notes by Andy Eng

Seasons Greetings good people! We hope to find everybody well and enjoying time with friends and family. I am writing this month’s column while traveling, using mostly just my smart phone – a first for me! (My apologies for any errors or omissions.) November’s live music scene was exceptionally good, with plenty of heart and soul for listening enjoyment. Let’s run down some of what all that went on!

CELEBRATION SEABROOK & HAMMER OF THE CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Chris Hardy @ Easy Street Lounge GODS – A restart of a past glorious tradition…. Evidence of planning was prevalent throughout the event, and hopeBrandy Zdan @ Scout Bar | Mickey Avalon @ Scout Bar fully this festival Nightbird @ Jackie’s Brickhouse | Texas Renaissance Festival Mango Punch @ will continue to Celebration Doyle Bramhall II @ Scout Bar | Mango Punch @ Celebration grow. The music Seabrook stage setup was Seabrook | Dave Nevling & Blues Kats @ Katie’s top shelf and Knurd @ Scout Bar | Picture Book @ Celebration Seabrook most – if not all the bands – were from inside the loop. Activities for the kids were plentiful, the grounds were very clean and the staff appeared as if they had a job to do, which they did very well. We got there in time to catch Mango Punch doing a great job of getting the crowds moving and grooving. - Continued on Page 35

desk it wouldn't be appropriate. Featured Bartender: TAYLOR from SCOTTY’S Bartending isn't necessarily a job Continued From Page 43 Favorite thing about the Bay Area? Being by the water is a great change of pace for me. I've worked behind the bar in East Texas, the galleria area and South Houston, but being by the Bay Area now is my favorite. There’s just something about being by the water. What do you love about Bartending? I was never very in tune with my creative side growing up, because I played sports my whole life, but being a bartender allows me to tap into creativity I never knew I had. Putting different liquors together for a shot and someone being impressed is a great feeling. My personality is able to shine behind the bar and gives me an opportunity to constantly meet new people. I'm extremely sarcastic at times and enjoy witty banter, so I'm able to use that in my line of work, where behind a

society holds a high standard for, but to me, it is the best job in the world. I get to help people have fun for a living. Who inspires you? I'm motivated by every guest that has asked me "What nights do you work, so I can come back and see you?" It's one thing to just serve drinks, get tipped and repeat. It's another to truly give your guests an experience and have them enjoy their night because you did everything you could to give them that. Working for Scott and everyone else at Scotty's Pub is the most fun I've ever had. These people care so much about what they are doing and pour their heart and soul into their company. You can tell it's not just for money, but a passion and it motivates me to keep learning to continue to wow people with two great pubs.

inevitable to find this year, many favorites from the past have passed on with new younger acts taking their places. I’m going to indeed miss the well-honed shows from the past and look forward to watching how these new acts develop out into the future. To be continued….

Headlining this year was Picture Book, a British Invasion Band with a splash of ZZ-Top and SRV for good measure. This tight

unit features member of the original Fab 40 and includes Ryan Guidry (lead), David Blassingame (rhythm), Steve Candelari (drums), and Bill Royal (bass) – and they all sing! This was the first time I had a chance to catch Picture Book on the local SCENE and rank these guys easily on the top end of the brackets as they pull off smashing renditions of the classic concert rock greats (Think of the last time you heard Immigrant Song loud and live), complete with anthem class solos channeled directly from the cosmos. Book ’em!!!!

RIDING WITH THE KING AND IN THE FLESH - You can tell a lot about the band playing Doyle Bramhall II by noticing @ Scout Bar who is in the audience. The night Doyle Bramhall II came to town, the audience at Scout Bar was unlike any audience I have seen ever at the place – many musical performers themselves. It’s been more

TEXAS REN FEST TOUCHED – In this season of traditions, one traditional popular for many throughout the region is to partake in the Texas Renaissance Festival in Texas Renaissance Plantersville, Texas. LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35 Opening for Brandy Zdan @ Bramhall was Scout Bar Brandy Zdan, a strong musical talent out of Nashville, and Houston's own Bad House, a local band we first covered in The SCENE at the Punkstar Full Throttle Internet broadcast show. A friendly reminder to all local bands, when you crack it open for national acts at Scout Bar, getting yourself onto the Punkstar Full Throttle show at Scout Bar is a prerequisite that surely helps. Knurd @ Speaking of opening for the Scout national acts, I caught a Bar new local band calling themselves Knurd out of the stables of Punkstar Full Throttle opening for nationally touring rap artist Mickey Avalon in November. Pretty cool, eh? If you think your band has the chops to perform with or at, Ation level caliber, Scout Bar is definitely good punch to have on your ticket.

Big Cletus Blues Review @ T-bone Toms

T-BONE TOM’S - The Big Cletus Blues Review was on the local schedule playing with Big Terry Rodgers, and I knew this was the show I would need to see as Cletus has recently moved to Rockwall, Texas. We will have fewer chances catching him live in the area with the Hollisters and as a music instructor at Danny’s Guitar Hacienda. Cletus musical career included opening for national acts at a young age and attributes much of this musical success to what he learned on tour and in Nashville where he was summoned to play along with others already there in the industry – – much different than going to Nashville on your own seeking fame and fortune. I’m sure it will only be a matter of time before Cletus is picked up by Rockwall bands and playing around the area much like he has in the Houston area. Front man, Big Terry Rodgers (who Big Cletus Blues Review @ T-bone Toms

Mickey Avalon @ Scout Bar

is still a frequent face around town) had it going well that evening. The blues has a way of resonating one’s body and soul and the truth tellers at T-Bone Tom’s (the dancers) picked up on it immediately confirming what we were hearing that night how he’s the real McCoy. - Continued on Page 32

METALACHI: Continued From Page 48 “Some people may think, ‘Oh that’s a mariachi band playing heavy metal music,’ but it’s one of those things that you definitely have to see live. It’s not just a band playing on the stage; it’s an experience; it’s a show. These aren’t your average musicians. They are masters of their instruments,” El Cucuy said. “Another facet of our show is a comedy show. There are a lot of jokes and interaction with the crowd. We make the crowd laugh, they make us laugh, and it’s really a big party. We don’t want people going home only saying, ‘That was a great band.’ We want them to say, “That was a great show!’ We always change it up, be it the songs or the show itself, and something for all of our returning fans,” he said. And Metalachi loves coming back to their fans in Houston to give them the experience they have come to expect.

THE SCENE

“Most of the times we play in Houston we play at Scout Bar. I love it, because I think it’s one of the loudest and craziest crowds we play anywhere! They get so loud sometimes that we can’t even hear ourselves on the stage! Houston really appreciates us. It’s such a fun crowd, and it’s one of the shows we always look forward to doing,” he said. Apart from their shows, Metalachi now has two albums. The second album, appropriately titled “Dos,” will be released this week and will be available at their shows, on Amazon, iTunes, or Metalachi.com. “This a project three years in the making. It sounds very different from the first one, because we have developed what heavy metal mariachi should sound like, and we are very proud of it. The album is very much a reflection of the show,” El Cucuy said. Catch the Metalachi experience on Saturday, December 10 at Scout Bar! Doors open at 8 p.m.; show begins at 10 p.m. Tickets are $12 and are available at www.scoutbar.com. For more information, including their upcoming national tour with Mac Sabbath (a parody heavy metal band that plays dressed as McDonald’s characters), visit Metalachi’s Facebook page or www.metalachi.com!

The Tree House

Dave Nevling & Blues Kats @ Katie’s

DAVE NEVLING AND THE BLUES KATS - I stopped in at Katie's in Bacliff on a Tuesday to catch Dave Nevling and the Blues Kats. It had been a while since I had seen the band play (back at the old sandbar Clear Lake Shores to be exact), and like a fine whiskey, time has been very good to Nevling and his Blues Kats. I have mentioned often how Katie’s is one of the finer music appreciation listening places in the area. And that evening, I got to meet a couple music loving newcomers to the area, all the way from Rhode Island, who had discovered Katie's and have made it their place. The staff at Katie’s are amongst the friendliest in the area with smart service and welcoming smiles which is impressive as they have one of the busiest bars happening. With the holiday season here and friends and family likely to come visiting, give them a treat and bring them to Katie’s for an evening of the finest Texas blues rock 'n' roll - They will think you’re a genius. THE TREE HOUSE – In case you are new to the area, The Tree House is one of our classic neighborhood bars. Tucked away with whereabouts known to the locals, this cozy hideaway is the place to pass time with friends enjoying food, spirits and football. The Tree House has regulars who have been coming for decades, something not many places in the area can boast. With

the upcoming college bowl season ahead, consider watching your alma mater at the Treehouse. While we’re on the subject of neighborhood bars... LEAGUE CITY’S EASY STREET is a friendly little neighborhood bar on the corner of Highway 3 and Main Street. For five months they closed their doors and completed a total makeover inside and out. This friendly live music hangout gutted the original sound dampening materials and completely revamping the room acoustics with a shiny bright surface. We missed out on the grand reopening event, but were able to catch Chris Hardy on the stage the night beChris Hardy @ fore. The last time we Easy Street saw Chris was at his infamous “Will Play For Food.” Since then, Chris has been busy folding into his mix a variety of new tastes and styles out of the music spice rack. Hardy’s vocals were strong last time we saw him and have developed into an even greater presence, with a gusto and heart that grabs listeners attention; it’s a unique sound you can recognize as Chris Hardy within merely a few measures.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 32 FOLLOW UP – A few months ago, I covered Nightbird at Jackie's Brickhouse for their inaugural show. Back then I was curious to see how the Kemah/Clear Lake audience would receive this Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac tribute band. This time around, I

was curious to see if they could grow a fan base - The November show packed the house with ease transforming Jackie’s into a concert hall / party arena. Music listeners truly get it when an artist puts their entire heart and soul behind the presentation and Nightbird did exactly that – gluing listeners to their seats on one song to fully absorb a Paul Hatton or Kelli Thompson solo followed by the next song filling the entire

FIT TO BE SCENE It is no secret my fondness of photographing performers as they exude their passion and full effort. Therefore, it should be no surprise in my recent taking to the local roller derby action. In November, we witnessed some of the finest displays of speed, power, finesse, teamwork and strategy at the BanxGiving Banked Track Invitational. Teams from across the nation were in attendance competing in round robin matches for top honors. I’ve a suspicion there is a larger roller derby following in the greater Houston metroplex then many would imagine. I’m looking forward to sizing it up. IT’S WRAP - With Holiday season upon us, ’tis time for things to start getting hectic and busy with friends and family. Sounds like fun and sounds like something best done while taking in some live music out and about on The SCENE. Thanks for taking time to share your stories. Big time thanks to all the artists, venues and supporters for all the great music and good times. Also, please don't forget to reach out to those who are alone, down and/or out. A helping hand goes a long way and is some of the finest mojo available - indulge yourself some, okay? We'll see you out there on The SCENE!

Regretting that Tattoo?: “When the Fun is Done, say ‘Tats Enough!’” By Sarah Piña

useful for future tattoos.

Maybe that tattoo of a years-ago-ex isn’t so pleasing anymore, or that fading butterfly doesn’t have the same charm it did when you were 18. Never fear, there is a new solution in the Clear Lake area!

“It doesn’t need to be completely removed. Tattoos can be faded with sequential sessions to get new ink or a different design. My purpose here – I feel – is to help people transition and make that change,” she said.

Terri Blatt, owner, operator, and licensed laser tattoo removal specialist of Tats Enough in League City, is ready to help with all tattoo removal needs.

These transitions can vary, however. A free consultation with Blatt will help those looking to switch things up determine the number of sessions needed as various factors are in play.

“People change throughout their lives; maybe they want to change things up. I see tattoos as an art form, and art always has meaning – but things change. When you were younger, maybe a poster of ‘dogs playing poker’ in your dorm room was cool, but you don’t want to have it hanging over your sofa several years later!” Blatt said.

“Each treatment takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Unfortunately, the inks are unregulated in the tattoo industry, and it really depends on the person, their health, and their skin. Other factors are the color of the tattoo, the size, and also the experience of the tattoo artist – that is, if it was a professional or just a friend who thought they knew what they were doing,” she said.

Sometimes that change need not involve complete removal. Blatt noted that the laser tattoo fading services she offers are also

There are varying wait times between treatments, also. However, this season is best to begin the process. “It’s a good time of year to get it done, because the treatments should be shielded from the sun,” she said. So whether a New Year’s resolution is in order, wedding bells may be ringing in the future, or it’s just simply time to say goodbye to that regrettable tattoo, call 409-443-4060 to schedule a free consultation or to book your appointment. The creative wheels are once again spinning for local artist, Elizabeth “Garnett” Ceret. After a 15-year hiatus from the canvas, Garnett is back at her easel. Garnett’s artistic drive never really stopped; it idled while she “chased the world.” Garnett has been working in the automotive industry for 20 years including selling cars, finance, management, and serving as an Automotive Retail Trainer. Garnett added she was also the manager for a rotary performance shop in Tampa, Florida. She is quite knowledgeable about engines and can teach about them as well as all product or models. Garnett believes in the spiritual world and the worldly or real world. She said artists especially would understand when you’re chasing the world and using all your emotions, it’s not easy to be as focused in the spiritual. “I feel a reawakening, a new me,” expressed Garnett. She had wanted to be an art teacher since the age of 7. Garnett’s love of art began when her father enrolled her in a drawing and slogan contest. Garnett won for her sketch and catchy slogan, and she told it was just the beginning. She started her artistic resume in her teens. Garnett received a prestigious pre-college scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University. She proclaimed, “It was quite a big deal at the age of 15.” Garnett informed her creative strength is in drawing, and she honed her painting skills while in college. She finished school in Florida; attending Pensacola Junior College and the University of South Florida. While in college, Garnett participated in many juried shows and sold lots of pieces. Through an art department program, she even travelled to study art in France for two years. Garnett considers her older works “abstract impressionism.” She explained, “It’s loose and abstract. You see form, but must use your imagination.” Garnett shared her newer paintings are “more landscapey and more thoughtful in application.” She finds current inspiration from her travels to places such as France, Hawaii, and Aruba. Garnett disclosed she is enjoying working with acrylics again. Garnett likes that acrylic is fast-drying to keep up with her pace. She admitted she’ll work on four or five paintings at a time. “I’m shaking off the cobwebs,” she confessed. When she moved to Seabrook and discovered a French café, La Poz, in need of artwork, Garnett said she threw her work up on the wall. “Now, they won’t let me take it down,” she said.

Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack: From Page 16 “Everything is fresh and made in-house. Guests love our fried and blackened alligator, which we also use in our tacos and étouffée,” she said. Smoked oysters, “dark roux” gumbo, and corn and crab bisque are also big hits, which score high with Louisiana natives as well. “People come here from Louisiana and say, ‘Oh yeah, you know what you’re doing here!’” Laurie said. At the end of the day, however, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack, with their famous crawfish and other seafood offerings, loves to bring people together. The holidays are a great time to get together for some great seafood meals, or bring your out-oftown guests who have never tried crawfish before.

“Crawfish is really a social event,” Laurie said. “People like to get together, relax, drink, talk, and dance to our live music. Many families will come for birthdays and other events, but this time of year is perfect for friends and family to gather for the holidays, too. And we are very kid-friendly. Kids are kids! Parents can kick back and relax and the kids can come here, be themselves and have a good time!” Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack in Kemah (310 Texas Ave.) and Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack 2 in East Houston (12008 East Fwy.) are open Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Visit Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack’s Facebook pages or www.crazyalanswampshack.com for menus, crawfish specials and other current specials, and live music happening on the patio this holiday season – and have a merry crawfish Christmas!

Laurie attributes this success to the spices and sauces originally created years ago by former Kemah head chef Guillermo Miranda, now manager and part owner of the East Houston location, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack 2. “The spices definitely make our crawfish special. Guillermo originally came up with a lot of these recipes,” she said, including the famous G-Sauce, named after him. “That’s our signature sauce, which is more Asianstyle, and people love it!” Along with the G-Sauce, crawfish-crazy patrons can Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack #1 order them with a garlic 310 Texas Ave. • Kemah, TX sauce (“People love the garlic sauce we make!” Laurie notes), and mild, hot, spicy and – for those who dare – extra spicy! Also key to Crazy Alan’s crawfish success, besides offering crawfish all year round, is the fact that they Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack #2 are very much in control of 12008 East Fwy • Houston, TX the crawfish product they bring in. While some venues operate on a “take what they can get” basis, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack’s long-established relationships with Louisiana crawfish farmers ensure that they get the best, freshest product, size, and cost, so they then can serve quality crawfish at reasonable prices to their loyal clientele. “Many years ago when we [Alan Franks, owner of Crazy Alan’s, and I] started in the crawfish business, before the restaurant opened, we decided we would go out and get our own,” Laurie recalled. And that recipe is one that continues to create success for Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack locations. Besides crawfish, however, Crazy Alan’s stays true to their “swamp shack” roots and offers a variety of Bayou-born dishes that are extremely popular with diners. - Continued on Page 17

CRAWFISH ALERT:

CRAZY ALAN’S SWAMP SHACK: A Crawfish Crazy Christmas! By Sarah Piña For more than seven years, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack in Kemah has garnered a reputation as the first area restaurant every year to have fresh, live Louisiana crawfish. The lively, two-story bar and restaurant has already been offering live Louisiana crawfish since early November. We’re told, diners come from around the world to try their tasty mudbugs with their signature sauces and seasonings. “At the Kemah location, we have many tourists who pass through from various countries, and will seek us out year after year for our crawfish,” manager Laurie Holzle said. Laurie has been a part of Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack since its inception in 2009, and has watched it grow into two locations (the second location is on the East Freeway in Houston) and, starting this year, remote food trucks. - Continued on Page 16
