New Year’s Resolution
EAT MORE MASA SUSHI!
Make a resolution to eat more sushi this year. And there is no better place to put this resolution into action than at Masa Sushi’s newest, biggest restaurant in Friendswood. More than 10 years ago, Michael Zhou and his wife Chi, new to the local area, introduced us to their collaboration with the opening of the popular Masa Sushi Japanese Fusion Restaurant in the heart of the NASA/Clear Lake area. Michael (a sushi chef for more than 30 years) and wife Chi (an accomplished French chef) have used a unique blend of Asian and French cuisine to grow and expand the Masa Sushi brand. First was the addition of a second restaurant, Masa Sushi Sake Bar, in League City. Next came the expansion and

As a SCENE favorite, we have published articles about the Zhous, new additions to the menus, aggressive drink specials, the openings of each of their new restaurants and the famous Masa Sushi anniversary celebrations that pack each location with promotions so good customers happily wait in lines stretching out the door. If you haven’t had the Masa Sushi experience, we suggest you give it a JAPANESE REST (3) try. And even if you have, we’ve got 1788 Friendswood Dr. more than a few reasons to go more Friendswood often, especially to the Masa Sushi 281-482-8888 mecca in Friendswood.

Black Pepper Tuna: This alone is tasty, but what makes it amazing is presentation and the dipping sauce that Zhou makes inhouse. It's his own recipe that truly brings out the flavors. Tuna Tartar: Spicy tuna, avocado and cucumber served with crispy wonton chips. Order a half order or full.

Sushi Sake Bar, this is the restaurant's namesake appetizer – and it's a tower of food. What's not to like already? Spicy tuna, rice, snow crab, cucumber, avocado and masago dressed with honey wasabi cream.
Masa Tower
Yummy Must Try: The name says it all. We were skeptical, but the dish DOES live up to its name. Shrimp, smoked salmon, tuna, yellow tail, crab, avocado, rolled with soypaper and white fish topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce. Slow-baked. Available only at Sake Bar.
Hot Rock Beef
The Food: We have provided a checklist of some of our favorite Masa Sushi items. Not included is the Sushi C, which is perfect for a group of two to experience a wide range of sushi offerings. Also of note is the brand new Bao Bao Sliders, which has become a go-to appetizer for some guests and main course for others.
Hot Rock Beef: Ishiyaki! A traditional Japanese table-cooking in new style. Thinsliced rib-eye served with shaved garlic and special dipping sauce. Only at Fusion. World Sashimi Combination: A great sampler presentation featuring tuna, Nabeyaki Udon hamachi, fresh salmon, flounder, super white and black pepper tuna. Only at Sake Bar.
World Sashimi | Fu Fu Roll
Fufu Roll: Fried oyster, salmon, avocado, cucumber, smelt roe topped with spicy tuna, spicy scallop and crunch.
Full Liquor Bar: Although their original location (at NASA Road and El Camino) started out with a beer/wine license, all locations now offer a full bar with the Friendswood location enjoying the most aggressive specials. Guests are welcome to sit at the bar and stay awhile. - Continued on Page 14

TACO TUESDAY TODAY With the end of 2016 we decided it was time to say good bye to “Taco Tuesday” and hello to “Taco Today.” Why limit ourselves to Tacos once a week when our area offers so many options for enjoying Tacos every day, including Today? Our crack editorial staff agreed any “Talk-o 'bout Tacos” should start with the venue that makes Taco lovers smile every Tuesday, Cabo in Seabrook. Even with a slight price increase starting this month, Taco Tuesday at Cabo is arguably the best bang for one’s buck. Of note is the nine flavorful choices Cabo offers every Tuesday at $3 a taco for Mojo Pork, Caribbean Jerk, Chicken Fajita, Steak Fajita or Fried Chicken, Mexican-style Street Tacos. For $1 more, chose from the three seafood options: Mahi Mahi, Ahi Avocado and Gulf Shrimp. But the Taco action isn’t limited to Tuesdays as the remaining six days of the week guests to Cabo can choose one of 4 taco entrees to satisfy those hunger pangs. And technically, you don’t need to limit yourself to just one taco entree. We don’t judge. More Taco options that get a SCENE endorsement: Mainly Drinks (La Porte):The Fish Taco is Panko fried tilapia, marinated slaw and pepper jack cheese on blue corn tortillas with a roasted tomatillo salsa. Served with chef's roasted corn and cilantro rice and vegetable of the day. Roger's Bar & Grill (League City):Chef Andre Cartier lists his signature Mango Pico Fish Tacos as one of the two most highly recommended dishes on the menu. Lone Star Grill (Bacliff):Choose from Fish or Shrimp Tacos: Huge Portions of Tilapia OR Shrimp, Marinated in Jalapeño, Cilantro & Cumin then Grilled to Perfection. Served w/Pickled Cabbage, Carrots, Red Onions, Fresh Salsa, House Made Verde Sauce & Lime in Corn Tortillas. Skallywag Suds ‘N Grub (Kemah): The team at Skallywag has gained a reputation for cooking up awesome scratch-made pub grub to complement the draft beer selection including a rotating selection of tacos (yellowfin, pulled pork, pork belly and fried chicken among others). We recommend visiting on Wednesday for $2.50 mix and match tacos. - Continued on Page 14

Happy Hour: Toast with your friends and buy a round or two with Friendswood’s competitive Happy Hour (starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday.) Beef and Thursday’s Roll. Saturday nights just got more fun with $4 select drinks from the full bar. The Architecture: Even if you don’t eat Japanese cuisine, the building itself is quite the marvel. Step inside and be wowed. This building is both beautiful and constructed with cutting-edge energy efficient building techniques and materials. Traditional Sunken Dining Tables: The Friendswood location offers an area featuring the only sunken dining tables this side of the loop that we (or the Zhous) are aware of. Ample Parking: There’s always plenty of parking at the Friendswood location. Sure, the front spaces immediately visible from FM 518 fill up rather quickly, but the huge exclusive parking lot behind the building has plenty of room. And there’s always plenty of seating inside, too! Special Events – OR -- Private Party Room: Perfect for gatherings of all sizes including business meetings, birthday celebrations or special events, the Friendswood location has a separate private party room available for reservation. It seats up to 40 guests. Catering: Masa Sushi is available for catering. Call for pricing and options. ------------------------------------------------------

Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack (Kemah): The Swamp Tacos are offered with a choice of alligator, fish, shrimp, or chicken blackened, grilled, or fried with shredded cabbage, pico, cilantro, cheese, and Cajun ranch on corn tortillas. You can find them on the lunch menu for a great deal. Stuttgarden Tavern (Texas City):Order Fish & Chips for two grilled cod tacos served with a pico de gallo & avocado sauce. Habanero's Taco Co. (Seabrook):Escape away from the norm and step into a Yucatan-style restaurant. An experience like none other around, step in and choose a tortilla and have your taco(s) filled with any of the 13 options available. We recently had an opportunity to sample the tasty shrimp tacos at Legends Sports Grill in League City. Next on our list are two new venues (Fuzzy’s Taco Shop in League City and Torchy’s Tacos in Webster), both ironically in locations previously home to Berryhill Baja Grill which had some tasty tacos while open locally. SC
PORTRAIT OF PATRIOTISM By Kelley Dawson
Ken “The Dauber” Pridgeon honors fallen heroes with his inspiring portraits. Each poignant piece tells a story of a soldier. Pridgeon assures the men and women he paints will always be honored and will never be forgotten. At 81-years-old, Pridgeon’s artistic passion is unwavering. He told he’ll paint from six in the morning until 10 or 11 at night. Though he has been an artist for a long time, Pridgeon admitted, “I didn’t think it was an asset for sure.” He mentioned his teachers didn’t care for his daydreaming. “I was always drawing pictures. My downfall was algebra,” joked Pridgeon. He added, “I really never thought about it being an asset. It was more a liability.” Pridgeon explained while serving in the United States Air Force, he was often asked to do “this and that and make posters and such.” Pridgeon shared at the age of 75 he discovered his artistic talents were indeed beneficial. He related, “It’s like the old saying, ‘In the frame it’s hard to see the picture.’” Pridgeon disclosed, “I was painting John Wayne and Willie and Waylon and the boys, but many calls were coming in for portraits of fallen soldiers. I became the poor man’s Norman Rockwell.” He said, “I was retired. A lady from Old-River Winfree called me about painting her son who was killed while serving in Iraq.” He informed the portrait he painted was three-foot by fourfoot and the family thought it might be too big to take home. The dilemma then became a mission. Pridgeon started “The Portrait of A Warrior Memorial Art Gallery” where large portraits of fallen heroes hang for all to view and respect. The families of the fallen receive a print of the portrait at no cost. - Continued on Page 21

Seen by The SCENE: NUTCRACKER BALLET
My name is Gracie Ennis. I am 7 years old. My mom took me to the Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theater's Nutcracker Ballet, and I want to tell you about it. During the performance, we saw the Rat King, Arabian Dancers, Chinese Dancers, Russian Dancers, Spanish Dancers and a Rose dancer with Flower people, the Sugar Plum Fairy. After the show, I got to meet Clara and the Nutcracker and all of my favorite ballet dancers after the show. I even got a big hug from Dr. Drosselmeyer. He has been doing this ballet for 25 years! Amazing! I love getting everyone's autograph and telling them they did a great job and that I loved the show. This year I wrote a special note on my hand and showed it to all of the dancers. My hand had a big smiley face and said "I loved the show." I think all of the girls loved my note and drawing. The ballet was all really cool. Good times! So good! I can't wait to go again next year! ~ Grace Ennis, Director of Social Outreach at The SCENE Magazine

Pridgeon’s portraits are accurate in his comparison to Norman Rockwell. “It’s not just a portrait anymore. I tell stories through painting with images in the background,” stated Pridgeon. He revealed that he starts portraits “right in the eye away from the light.” He finishes the eye completely before moving on. Pridgeon advised, “The families look at the eyes first. It’s how I maintain that person’s identity. Then I move across the nose to the other eye. The tone values are important and must stay true.” He uses a small brush and told he takes his time; though he can complete a portrait in just two days.
Pridgeon’s big heart, extraordinary talent, and his gallery have garnered international attention. His first magazine interview was for a publication in London, England. He and his museum have also been highlighted in several other magazine articles and many television and news shows. Pridgeon has a published book he wrote titled “The Life and Times of Ken ‘The Dauber’ Pridgeon.” He is currently writing his second book, “Life Begins at 75.” Learn more about Ken Pridgeon and his mission “The Portrait of A Warrior Memorial Art Gallery” by visiting www.portraitofawarrior.org or ken-pridgeon.pixels.com. The gallery is located at 308 W. Texas Ave. in Baytown. Other works (nonwarrior themed) are on display at Mainly Drinks (223 W. Main Street) in La Porte.

Lakewood Youth Sailors Spend Christmas at Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta Lakewood sent three C420 Teams with Coach Marek Valesek to their first C420 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in Miami over Christmas break.
HYC Commodore's Ball
The two-person teams of Alex Wise/Laurel Tyson, Grace Bates/Pilar Blanco Midulla and Paul/Celia Houston as well as several other youth sailors were in full learning mode before the trip as accomplished sailor and Yale Assistant Sailing Coach Bill Healy afforded the racers his knowledge of C420 racing. Healy, spent two days at Lakewood Yacht Club training the spirited young sailors.
HYC Mid-Winter Regatta
"We practiced in very breezy conditions," said Healy. "If the kids see similar conditions in Miami they will feel much more comfortable since Galveston Bay doesn't usually offer those types of conditions. The group has a whole is fairly fresh to the C420 class but no strangers to these large events. Look for them to post some great individual races and results." Strong 20-knot winds were enjoyed both days of the clinic, which focused on boat preparation, tuning guidelines, rigging the boats, and then basic trimming and hiking techniques as well as mark roundings. However, Sunday was 40 degrees colder than Saturday, so Healy, Valesek and the rest of the coaches utilized videos of high-level sailing to give the kids something to visualize. The young sailors took furious notes during the debriefings before braving the cold to practice the techniques on the water. Visit www.lakewoodyachtclub.com to learn more about Lakewood Yacht Club's youth sailing program and for updates on how the competitors fared in Miami.

Beer Ambassador (John Corbett): From Page 31
The State of the Texas Craft Beer scene is still on the rise with more and more craft breweries opening all the time. When I'm not working or drinking beer, I'm relaxing at home or playing trivia with my girlfriend and sometimes I travel to Austin. Other than current profession, what position/profession would you like to attempt: I would like to have my own bar eventually. Who inspires you: Ken Grossman the founder of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. He started his company when there were only 45 independent brewery's in America. He started basically with nothing, going door to door selling his beer and now runs a 300 million dollar brewing company. He is always trying to improve his products.

Craft Beer Ambassadors - Stuttgarden Tavern Meet the folks responsible for selecting, ordering and promoting craft beer at each of Stuttgarden’s three locations ERIC
JOHN
MICHELLE ERIC JONES Stuttgarden On The Strand Favorite Texas brewed beer: That's a tough question. I'll let you know when I've tasted them all. Favorite non-Texas brewed beer: There are too many to choose from. That's like asking my favorite thing on Stuttgarden's menu, they all taste good. Overlooked beer classification: American Brown ale. Favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer: Backyard cookouts with friends and family. Bucket list setting in which you would like to enjoy a beer one day: Beerfest in Germany. One person living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer with: Matthew McConaughey. One person not living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer with: Samuel Adams. The State of the Texas Craft Beer scene is looking good! I'm excited to see where we take it from here. When I'm not working or drinking beer, I’m hanging out with my wife and kids. Other than current profession, what position/profession would you like to attempt: Something to do with fitness. Who inspires you: My dad. How long have you been working at Stuttgarden On The Strand: Since it's inception.
MICHELLE HOOKS Stuttgarden Kemah Favorite Texas brewed beer: I am a huge Texas Beer Refinery fan!!
THE SCENE
Favorite non-Texas brewed beer: Clown Shoes makes some tasty beers. Overlooked beer classification: A good Gose or a good Rye Beer. Favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer: Is there a bad place to have a beer? Bucket list setting in which you would like to enjoy a beer one day: I would love to do a US tour in a RV! Maybe stop at 5 breweries for every state..... after my kids are gone, of course! One person living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer with: Donald Trump! Cause....why not???? (I didnt even vote, before anyone judges!) One person not living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer with: My grandfather. I would love a few more moments with him. The State of the Texas Craft Beer scene is Booming!!!! It is very exciting to watch so many new breweries pop up. I love local beer!
more than a year.
JOHN CORBETT Stuttgarden Texas City Favorite Texas brewed beer: Real Ale is putting out some amazing beers their Axis IPA is probably my favorite at the moment with its hints of tropical fruit and citrus. It is an easy drinking delicious beer. Favorite non-Texas brewed beer: Firestone Walker Luponic Distortion. It is a series of beers that rotates different hops so it is always intriguing and each batch will be different than the last. Overlooked beer classification: I love a great Porter! Porters are overlooked because of the Stouts, Imperial Stouts, and Bourbon barrel aged Stouts being all the hype. Favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer: I really love enjoying a beer with family and friends on a chilly night around a bonfire.
When I'm not working or drinking beer, I'm doing Crossfit. Just ask me.... I will tell you all about it.
Bucket list setting in which you would like to enjoy a beer one day: I've always wanted to visit Germany during Oktoberfest because it is the worlds largest beer festival.
Who inspires you: My amazing 5 year old, T! He was born with a childhood liver disease and is a huge light in everyones life that he meets. I am super lucky to watch him grow and become an amazing person. He reminds me not to sweat the small stuff....and its all small stuff.
One person living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer with: Mike Youngkin is a brewer at Texas Beer Refinery. He introduced me to the craft beer world. We are still great friends just finding time to sit and enjoy a beer together is getting harder to do with our busy schedules.
How long have you been working at Stuttgarden: Stuttgarden Kemah has been open 2 months! John and Derek have built an awesome place for folks to have a couple of beers....and lots of fun! Prior to that, I have worked at the Galveston location with Eric & Danny for a little
One person not living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer with: My grandfather, who believed that there was a perfect wine for every meal. I wish he was still alive so I could introduce him to all the different types of beer.

their shows. The show I caught at Jackie’s Brickhouse was LC Rocks which wasn’t the band I was looking for, but was a good catch that evening so I hung around for a set. LC Rocks is a pure ’80s party cover band from Austin, Texas. Like the Velcro Pygmies or the Klocks, the LC Rocks show uses gantries of lighting and operators trucked in from across the state. Many of you readers have enjoyed time in Austin. (I know Austin was very good to me back in the day.) It was refreshing to enjoy an evening of Austin entertainment down here on the coast. LC Rocks. They are good to go!
Along the way, we caught some great live music with the Blaggards at T-Bone Tom’s and Abel Salazar at Amadeus. The show at Stuttgarden Tavern was setting up for the late night crowd while we were there. I’m looking forward to following the live music action at Stuttgarden as they have had great lineups in their Galveston location. The Blaggards is a unique band with a crazy cool ability to take any song, be it from anything ranging from Cash to Presley, double the tempo and transform the song into a stout Irish rock anthem with a full head of gusto. They’ve got a following everywhere they go and includes past Johnson Space Center Directors as fans. It’s been a while since we’ve caught up with Abel Salazar, one of the area’s neighborhood musical cornerstones, and it’s plenty obvious that he still has the magic touch getting people on the dance floor and bringing out the good times in people – a gifted touch indeed. TWIN REDEAUX - Earlier in the year, we caught up with Infinity’s Twin and when they returned to Jackie’s Brickhouse, felt a follow up was in order. This is an interesting band that keeps a busy schedule with only a Facebook page for posting upcoming shows. Little is written on who their band members are, where they’re from, or what inspires them. One thing I could find was that this band keeps a pretty busy schedule playing at clubs around town. Once there, the band interprets and presents a range of popular covers in a big bold manner that grabs listener’s attention (including me). This commanding presentation then smothers the listeners in a sea of electrifying audio sensations that creates fans and keeps them coming back for more. Fun stuff! LC ROOTS/ROCKS - There’s a band that was popular in the area during the days of the Jalapeño Tree by the name of LC Roots. I had heard lots about this band and had always wanted to catch one of

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TIM MILLER - Over the years, we’ve kept up with founder of Texas Equusearch and his army of volunteers
through numerous fundraising endeavours throughout the region. In December, friends and families of those whom Texas Equusearch served gathered to celebrate Tim’s 70th birthday over brunch at Jackie’s Brickhouse. David Schwope provided the live music serenade for the party room crowd. It’s been awhile since we’ve crossed paths with David on The SCENE circuit and it’s always a good one whenever we do. We’ve always felt it a privilege being around Tim Miller, and all of his great people and look forward continuing to do so in the years ahead. Happy Birthday, Tim!!! IT’S A WRAP - Keep your fingers crossed, our hometown football team still has a chance this year while our pro basketball team is off to a good start and our professional baseball team is starting to trade for proven veterans. In 2016, we saw a lot of the vulnerable soft underbelly as a nation (and community) and by definition, ‘tis time to rejoin friendships that may have been severed during this discourse. I hope all of you were able to find periods of peace and joy through the holiday season with friends and family. Live music lost many good ones this year (Glenn Frey, David Bowie, Leon Russell, Leonard Cohen, Prince, Merle Haggard, Maurice White, Paul Kantner, and Dale Griffin). If an Auld Lang Syne struck close, I hope you were able to be able to reflect fondly of good times with those who had to march on. 2016 was a great year for local live music. Thanks to the artists, venues and fans for all the great music and good times here at a wonderful place we call The SCENE. And here’s to an even better 2017. All the Best!

I’ll have to do some serious research on this - I’m not sure if my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, covered a singer/songwriter’s contest but got this feeling that if he did, right about now, he’d shout out “Bravo!” Cheers! METALACHI & BADHOUSE - Last month’s writeup by Sarah Piña reminded me it was time to catch the Metalachi, the world’s first and only heavy metal Mariachi band, at Scout Bar. Man, I forgot how much fun this band is and was the shot in the arm I was needing… <vbgrin> New band member “Queen” Kyla Vera was on violin which turned me onto some really fine photos to go along with her sizzling fiddling. Sarah’s review of the band pretty much got it right, so I’d like to veer a bit and make some mention of the opening act, Badhouse.
According to the band, “Badhouse began in early 2014 as a jam project that slowly turned into some hard hitting grooving tunes. It all started with Alex Gomez on guitar and Johnny aka "Bum Johnny" on bass as kids growing up playing music since their early teen years. Influenced by Metal ,Classic rock, Blues and Country they decided to throw it all together to eventually form Badhouse. Later adding drummer Jason Garcia to the lineup to fill in the gap.” We first took notice of this loud and powerful three-piece group from up the street in Pasadena, when they brought out the crowd on the Punk Star Fullthrottle Radio Show at Scout Bar. They lit the place on fire... We weren’t the only ones to notice as Badhouse got the call to open for The Hunger, given a night of their own at Scout Bar and proving they can play *and* fill the house, got called in to open for Metalachi. Pretty cool, eh? According to their Facebook page, Badhouse has been around since 2014, but in my book, they scored my vote for new band of the year. ANNUAL PUB CRAWL - The Krewe du Lac’s annual Kemah Pub Crawl and Toy Drive went down in December and as in years past, T-Bone Tom’s served as the starting point where the fantastic staff was able to host their usual full house Friday night dinner crowd along with the masses See page 22 for more Pub Crawl photos of merry mongers without missing a beat. This year, the designated Kemah Lighthouse District stops included T-Bone Toms, Stuttgarden Tavern Kemah, Bakkhus Taverna, Palapas, and Amadeus before returning to the launch site.

Sparky turned me onto his first CD “Live in Houston.” Recorded live at Dan Electro’s. I listened to this CD several times over the holidays and consider this a benchmark CD of what many new bands need to be doing. The live albums are what I believe is missing these days: A well-performed show, clean audio capture, proper mix engineering and tastefully mastered. Tens across the board. The live atmosphere performance provides a forum for the group’s natural energy to be heard and a great means to get something out on the street with less time in the studio. Kudos to The Sparky Parker Band, Roger Tausz and JC Rx (Recording), Bong Island Sound (mixing), and Rock Romano at the Red Shack Recording Studio (Mastering). Well done! SINGER SONGWRITERS CONTEST - Hosted again by Danny D’s Guitar Hacienda and in collaboration with Angie Emerson & League City’s Easy Street Lounge, the format this time
SPARKY PARKER - Looking for something to do one evening, I was thumbing through The SCENE and happened upon an act I’ve never caught before. I gave it a whirl and caught a good one at Katie’s in Bacliff that night with the Sparky Parker Band. Bob & Katie are always bringing in the best of talent in the area and this night was no exception. Playing along with Sparky, this evening included Phillip (FenderPhil) Lock (bass) and Snit Fitzpatrick (drums). I had just returned from a ground level visit to lower Manhattan, New York, and my first impression of Sparky was that I was looking at a Wall Street financier before Bob straightened me out. This clean-cut guitar instructor, who currently lives in the Heights, blew me away as he and his band casually gathered on stage, plugged in and instantly took things straight into sizzle mode like a no huddle offense driving the field on the opening drive for a touchdown. It was a “very crisp” and compelling first impression. Parker keeps things busy and a popular figure playing in the Houston music community including lead guitar duties for Diunna Greenleaf and Blue Mercy. My early Christmas gift came when

Nonetheless, with what we were able to catch, we were totally delighted with the refreshing poise, clarity, and sincerity not from just the performer but the actual songwriter, in person.

“There’s a different dynamic between the live show and the studio album. The music is so attuned to dynamics and that’s one of the biggest things that strikes them. Jan and I take on very different personas onstage. We are very aware of the crowd, but also very engrossed in the music itself. We hope for a show where people will come up and hopefully say, ‘Wow! I can’t believe I just saw that!’” Eggenschwiler added.
This unique sound has already made the band a prominent fixture on the Houston music scene and earned them fans from around the world, particularly after the release of their first album, The Search (2016) (recorded at Lucky Run Studio in Houston). Reviews began to pour in shortly thereafter, including one from the popular underground music news and reviews website The Obelisk.
Add in the fact that they will be sharing the stage with heavy metal legend Udo Dirkschneider, and the show is sure to be an unforgettable one.
“[The Obelisk] has a high international readership,” Eggenschwiler explained. “Ever since then, we’ve been corresponding with folks all over the world. On a weekly basis, we are getting emails from Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Brazil, all wanting a physical copy of the album,” he said. Kimmel added that a popular Greek YouTube channel that showcases new metal and hard rock even bootlegged The Search.
“There is no doubt that Udo and the band Accept are extremely influential, and have been [an influence] on bands that everyone has heard of, from Metallica on down,” Kimmel said.
“We were actually very pleasantly surprised by that, because this is very much a do-it-yourself effort,” he said, with that particular video having now over 4,500 views. And with their upcoming show in Clear Lake at Scout Bar, Blues Funeral is looking forward to delivering their music live again to their loyal fans. “We have some of the best fans in the world. We have people that will fly in from out of town and come straight from the airport or drive an hour and half to see us,” Kimmel said.
“It’s really cool to be a part of this moment, and this show. [Udo’s tour] has been an insane show every night and has garnered some awesome crowds. We’re really stoked!” Eggenschwiler said. You can catch Blues Funeral on Saturday, January 28 at Scout Bar for Udo Dirkshneider’s “Farewell to Accept” Tour along with Paegan and Serpent Attack. Tickets range from $27.50 to $65. Doors open at 7 p.m. and show begins at 8 p.m. Be sure to visit Blues Funeral’s at bluesfuneral.bandcamp.com for more information on the band, their music, and upcoming shows!

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 47 Over the years of performing, I have become thankful for the fans and venues that have allowed me room to experiment and grow as a songwriter/musician - And in return, I’ve built a collection of songs suitable for the mood of the audience for the particular moment at hand”. Seems sound to me and traits recognized throughout the chronicles of modern music…. Carry on! Also in the month of December, we were treated with some really tasty new material from Joe Serrato, front men for the band InDaskies. Serrato’s solo works includes material ranging from Spanish rock, hip hop alternative, and reggae fusion. “I’ve even got a punk thrash country song.” Serrato shares, “I’m kind wanting to no set genre because I love so many different styles and am trying to implement all of them somehow.” -- Hearing the clarity of Serrato’s lyrics that evening had me thinking Fogelberg. I’ll have to get back with Joe and ask if he ever listened to any Fogelberg. Until then, know that word has Joe and the band working on an EP scheduled to come out Spring for 2017. If this album includes any of Serrato’s new material, I’m sure listeners will find this to be one fine piece of work.

Sometimes, simply altering the presentation a song makes for great new presentation (recall Led Zeppelin and their Unplugged show). In December, Howell Windham of the Black Grass Gospel did exactly that for me and the Cabo audience. Many of you readers have seen the Black Grass Gospel, the outlaw bluegrass band from the Alvin. This band displays musical talent that conveys clearly receipt of proper instrumental instruction coupled with a musical style reflecting having older cousins sharing Bluegrass, Classic Rock and Punk at an early age. They play a blistering Prestissimo tempo with a continuous Accelerando into what they describe an “original darque lyrical adventure supported by haunting melodies , upbeat rhythms” - I call it a clever frenzic interweave that resolves. This evening in December, Howell took several of their numbers into an easy listening tempo along the lines of a Harry Chapin or Gordon Lightfoot -- Had Cabo had a full house in for dinner, the setting would have nailed it for an evening of intelligent conversation and company with friends and company. Perhaps this may lead to something...

Loose Notes by Andy Eng
Happy New Year, Good People! I hope you’ve had a good dose of Merry come into your life in December with friends, family, and even strangers too… If the Auld Lang Syne hit close last year, we hope you found peace and closure as we rung in the new year. The live music scene was exceptionally good in December and it was great catching up with many of you out there. Let’s run down some of what all that went down.
MIC CHECK: Throughout 2016, we noticed an exodus in CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Open Mic (1st Monday of Month, hosted by Chris the ranks of the young local live music community as their paths carried more than a few of them to other places and Hardy) @ Cabo • Infinity’s Twin @ Jackie’s Brickhouse • Songwriters Contest pursuits. Checking out the local open mic scene in Decem- @ Easy Street • Angie Emerson hosts Open Mic (Thursdays) @ Cock-eyed Seagull • Chris Hardy hosts Open Mic @ Cabo • Blaggards @ T-bone Tom’s ber, we were delighted spotting the new wave of up and Open Mic @ Cabo • LC Rocks @ Jackie’s Brickhouse • Open Mic @ Cabo coming talent, predominantly homegrown, showing up Songwriters Contest@ Easy Street and joining those who stayed. Replenishing the ranks locally, if you will. I love open mic shows - It’s a great chance to hear musicians develop chops, collaborate with other musicians, roll out new compositions, and share other perspectives beyond what we may come to know them as. Current open mics in the area include Katie’s Open Jam with guest hosts each Sunday, from 4-8pm. On the waterfront, Cabo has an open mic on the first Monday of each month hosted by Chris Hardy. The longest running open mic on the Scene is happening at the Cockeyed Seagull on Thursday Nights hosted by Angie Emerson. We mentioned Chris briefly a couple of issues ago in The SCENE and follow up is in order. A songwriter at heart, Hardy’s origins stem from rock & roll & Texas country, yet we were impressed by the several new styles he presented. Hardy explains, “It’s not fair limiting a songwriter to a single style of music. Adding other styles to my palette (fusion, jazz, blues, and whatever) has allowed me the means and freedom to cover a wider range of stories that are within me... - Continued on Page 35

BLUES FUNERAL By Sarah Piña Clear Lake, get ready to rock again at Scout Bar this month for Udo Dirkschneider’s “Farewell to Accept” Tour! The lineup, though featuring German heavy metal legend Dirkschneider, will also showcase some of the best the Houston metal scene has to offer, including Paegan, Serpent Attack, and a band garnering not only local, but international attention with their signature mix of ’60s and ’70s hard rock, metal, and progressive rock.

Blues Funeral, a Houston-based group composed of Jan Kimmel (guitar, vocals, keyboard), Maurice Eggenschwiler (guitar, vocals), Gabe Katz (bass), and Cory Cousins (drums), formed just over two years ago, with most members coming from part of another popular metal band, Sanctus Bellum. However, in 2014, the band went on hiatus, and with ideas to explore and incorporate other musical styles, Blues Funeral was born.
Powerman 5000 and Orgy Thurs., January 21 SCOUT BAR
“We had been discussing a more ’70s side project for years with more harmonized vocals, in the style of Cream or Deep Purple,” Kimmel said. “[The band] is attracting a lot of attention because we have a very ’60s and ’70s-oriented sound, but Maurice and I will spend a lot of time on technical elements as well, and a lot of people dig that attention to detail.” Inspired by the album Blues Obituary from the ’60s British power trio The Groundhogs, this style of music and what it speaks to is very much tied to their band’s name, as well. “I like the idea of the New Orleans style jazz funeral… We cover a lot of different topics that revolve around personal struggles, relationships, life and death. I think that the idea of a funeral is that you mourn but you celebrate, and we try to cover all of that. So the name comes from a specific place, but it has a lot of symbolism to it,” Kimmel said. “We have a strong blues undercurrent with a modern tone. Blues Funeral perfectly conveys the sounds that Jan and I are into, from classical to jazz to ’60s and ’70s progressive rock to death and black metal in some cases. It kind of neatly encapsulates all we love in music,” Eggenschwiler added.
