TOOKIE’S SEAFOOD
All fired up (over oysters) in Seabrook By Jason Goodrich Barry Terrell is an oyster evangelist. The owner of Tookie’s Seafood in Seabrook is obsessed with Galveston Bay’s humble, jumbo bivalve. And he wants you to taste the truth. “To me, they’re the best anywhere,” he proclaimed as a justshucked dozen hit the table on an unseasonably warm January afternoon. “I’ve been everywhere, tasted them all. There ain’t nothin’ better.” You may have noticed – or already visited – Tookie’s Burgers’ new seafood sibling. It’s hard to miss what looks like a 14,000 square-foot beach house just off Highway 146, near NASA 1. The theme continues inside where you’ll find beachy cool colors, warm woods and exposed brick. Overhead in the Treehouse Room, metal sharks chase each other from exposed rafters. Vintage signs and an ancient outboard engine adorn the walls. Local art and artifacts wash everything in a rosy sense of place. The open kitchen is centrally located for all to see. It’s a gleaming, impressive operation; just ask for a tour. But back to those oysters. Terrell’s passion for them shows up on the menu, where oysters - raw and grilled - perch proudly on top, like a pelican settled on a wooden pier post. - Continued on Page 13

TOOKIE’S SEAFOOD:
From Page 9
At their basic best, you have the succulent raw oysters (49 cents each during happy hour, Monday through Friday 3 to 6 p.m.) Heartier versions off the grill, include the bacon, jalapeño and cheese “Pelicans.” The Oyster D’Armes are nearly a meal unto themselves - a plump, juicy fried oyster lovingly blanketed in gratineed artichoke butter and topped with a zesty blackened shrimp. Make you slap yo’ mamma. The rest of the menu offers many equally rave-worthy dishes: Redfish simply seasoned and grilled over mesquite coals, blackened Mahi Mahi, “Frank’s” stuffed flounder, Gumbo Ya Ya. (There’s an authentic New Orleans vibe throughout the menu.) The perennial local favorite, fried shrimp, starts with crustaceans off the boat that day from just a shell’s skip away. Battered and fried to order, they are heaven. Get ’em alone or as part of a variety platter, but just get ’em. Around the Bay Area, we know that seafood has seasons. Oysters are more plentiful November through April, for instance. But no “season” gets people and local restaurateurs as excited as crawfish season, which is now upon us. To celebrate, Tookie’s Seafood is offering buckets of giant mudbugs for $4.99 per pound during the weekday happy hour (3 to 6 p.m.), and all day Thursday. But they are available any other time you want to suck some heads. To douse your flaming lips, try a local brew on tap. The 24spout system in the sports bar offers brews by 8th Wonder, St. Arnold, Karbach and Galactic Coast. The wine list covers a wide range of varietals while remaining compact. Something for everyone. Signature cocktails feature fresh ingredients and Texas liquors. The Toddville Tea and Watermelon Margarita are inventive twists on classics. All of this seems like a pretty complete dining experience. But Terrell, who also owns Tookie’s Burgers (next door in Seabrook) and T-Bone Tom’s (just past the bridge in Kemah), isn’t finished. “I’ve always had live music at every place I’ve managed or owned.” Tookie’s Seafood, he said, will have it, too. At first, likely upstairs in one of the dining areas. But the vision is much grander than that. The restaurant sits on a sizeable lot, the former site of a church, with several mature shade trees and a triangular, open lawn opposite the parking lot along 146. Terrell hopes to one day put a stage at the far end of the lawn to host regular concerts like at T-Bone Tom’s. Underneath the main restaurant on the ground floor, there’s enough space for a pub and event space with another kitchen, he said. Terrell has been running local restaurants and groups of them for 30-plus years. It’s where he developed the connections to his current managers and kitchen crew. Speaking to him about how his latest, largest venture came together, it’s easy to see the vision he’s laid out for Tookie’s Seafood as inevitable, like a good evangelist can do – Even an oyster evangelist. Tookie’s Seafood is located at 1106 Bayport Blvd. in Seabrook. Hours of operation are Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Featured Artist: Eva Michelle
By Kelley Dawson “I’m happiest when working with clay. I can do it for eight to ten hours and won’t even know it,” declared artist Eva Michelle. Her passion for art materializes in each piece she creates. From Michelle’s whimsical clay sculptures to her intriguing, surrealist paintings; her creations are eye-catching and memorable. Michelle stated she started art in high school. She told she never thought much about it, but knew she was talented. At 22-years-old, Michelle had a child and decided she needed to go to college. There she earned her Associate of Arts degree and is working toward her Master of Arts. “Art just comes natural and I can do it all: sculpture, weaving, oil pastels, acrylics,” said Michelle. She added, “Clay is my biggest passion. Between painting and clay, it’s a close call for first.” She stated surrealism is her favorite style and she also creates abstracts on the side. Michelle teaches art at a Pasadena middle school and shares her intense art adoration with her students. She shared how much she enjoys helping her students explore creatively, and it allows her to work on her own designs as well. Michelle is always making something. Currently, she is constructing large scale clay sculptures. “If I’m not creating and working with my hands, I feel incomplete,” admitted Michelle. She disclosed, “My emotions are carved out in the majority of my work. I won’t always notice until I’m done, and then it’s, ‘Wow! I’m so connected to this.’” Michelle explained that during her emotionally high times her works are “busier with way more color and seem happier.” Her pieces can be more off-the-wall during her down times. “Things may look a little bit more sad or morbid,” she said. Michelle informed she uses art to help her as therapy for whatever happens in her life. She revealed, “My life is truly related in my art.” Michelle divulged she has so much art she doesn’t know what to do with it all. She is hoping to participate in an art show soon and expand her local exhibitions. - Continued on Page 21

Make a SPACE for ART
Courage and Unity are composed of hand-painted canvasses by young cancer patients and will be displayed together through February 12.
Paint a picture with stardust. Capture the cosmos in a photo. Make a Space for Art. Space for Art is a new exhibit combining art, science and technology and curated by Space Center Houston with retired astronaut Nicole Stott. See how science and art are hand-in-hand linked in paintings, sculptures, skateboard designs, quilts, musical instruments, ceramics, a graphic novel, photography and other forms of art created or played by the space community.
Included in the exhibit are photographs taken in the International Space Station, the only watercolor painted in orbit, a flute played by NASA Johnson Space Center Director Ellen Ochoa while in space and more. The creativity of these courageous explorers will be on full display. Find the beauty in math. Find a Space for Art, only at Space Center Houston.
This new exhibit at Space Center Houston runs through March 19. See the artistic side of astronauts, engineers and scientists, as well as work from the Spacesuit Art Project.
One day admission to Space Center Houston is $29.95 for adult and $24.95 for children 4 to 11 years, under 4 free, and seniors 65 and up is $27.95.

2016 Houston Fishing Show Primed For Great Fishing A mild winter and an early spring are opening the doors to another great fishing season across southeast Texas. No major freezes along the coast protected inshore fish, and water readings already in the mid 60s are encouraging early shallow-water activity in freshwater lakes and ponds. And, not coincidentally, the 41st annual Houston Fishing Show will open its doors Wednesday, March 16, for a five-day run in the George R. Brown Convention Center. The show, regarded as the largest consumer exhibition of its type in the country, will fill the entire 200,000-square foot Exhibit Hall A with fishing-related booths. New rods, reels, lures, lines and accessories will be on display, many backed by guides, pro-class anglers and factory representatives. On-going fresh and saltwater seminars will be conducted daily, and Saturday and Sunday will feature the free Kids' Casting Clinic. The clinic, sponsored by Plano Tackle, the Two of Us Bass Club, and Fishing Tackle Unlimited, will give tackle boxes to all participants, and the young casters can aim for additional prizes.
FISHING SHOW FACTS: WHERE: George R. Brown Convention Center, Exhibit Hall A. WHEN: Wednesday, March 16 thru Sunday, March 20 SHOW HOURS: Wednesday Through Friday Noon to 9 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ADMISSION: Adults $9; Children (Ages 6-12) $2. Space Center Houston Opens Spectacular Mars Exhibit The next big thing is now open at Space Center Houston! The spectacular new Mission Mars exhibit showcases an immersive experience about the red planet and offers an opportunity to peer inside an Orion spacecraft research model, stand close to a giant model rocket and walk on a virtual Mars environment. The multi-million-dollar interactive exhibit, designed with input from NASA experts, opens as the nonprofit also kicks off its 25th anniversary year. “This new major exhibit will inspire the next generation of explorers who could one day walk on Mars,” said William T. Harris, president and CEO of the science and space learning center. “Visitors will explore what it takes to travel to Mars, the hardware that will get us to the fourth planet in our solar system and how humans may live and conduct research on the red planet in future decades.” Space Center Houston worked closely with NASA in the development of Mission Mars. A stunning 4K technology video shows a virtual Mars landscape with rovers exploring the planet, a future rocket launching from Earth and heading for Mars and future astronauts landing. The exhibit puts visitors in the astronaut’s seat of an Orion simulator and allows them to record their own historic messages as they take their first steps on Mars. A collection of three rare Mars meteorites is on display inside the exhibit for a limited time, plus there is a special Mars rock visitors can touch. There are only 60,000 known meteorites on Earth, fewer than 150 are from Mars and most of those are held in private collections. The future-looking exhibit takes visitors to a Mars landscape and features a look at how Mars and Martians have been illustrated in pop culture; the wealth of potential scientific discoveries to uncover on Mars; the innovation needed to build the most advanced spacecraft; and what returning to earth from deep space involves. Understanding the evolution and formation of Mars is the first step of the journey in the new exhibit. The physical terrain is explored through virtual landscapes provided from an orbiting satellite and surface rovers. The experience allows visitors to leave their footprints on three different types of Mars surfaces, study Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system, and seek evidence of water and water erosion as keys to finding evidence of possible life on Mars. Visitors are able to peer inside a full-size Orion research model used by engineers from NASA Johnson Space Center and Lockheed Martin. The exhibit includes a magnificent 45-foot 1/8th scale model of the Space Launch System, which will be the most advanced and powerful deep space rocket ever produced. The SLS will use four RS-25 engines to help propel astronauts further into space than any rocket in history. Visitors can walk around one of these engines in the display. Touchscreen activities provide an opportunity to explore Mars, suit up an astronaut and pack for the long trip. The SCENE is the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. Look for our Convention & Visitors Bureau racks in hotels and visitors centers.

at Dan's for the last year, but have worked with Dan the Pizza Man on-and-off in multiple restaurants for almost 12 years, sometimes cooking, sometimes delivering or answering phones, but always enjoying some local craft beers together come closing time!
The State of the Texas Craft Beer scene is to me, one of the most exciting things about being in Texas right now! We have some of the best IPAs and stouts (and almost every other style, too) anywhere in the world, in my opinion, not to mention some of the most innovative brewers/breweries. I could die happy drinking only Texas beers. When I'm not working or drinking beer, I'm ... asleep. Other than current profession, what position/profession would you like to attempt? I think one day I might enjoy being an old-school inkeep type, brew my own beer, cook the food, chat with the regulars... something very Game of Thrones-y without the violence and pillage that inevitably befalls such a peaceful and content establishment. Who inspires you? I am inspired by anyone who dares to try something different, rather than follow the same path of those that came before her/him. Even if you are not necessarily financially successful, if you are following your own creative direction – your own calling – that is awesome in my book. How long have you been working at Dan's Pizza Co.? I've been the "beer (and beard) guy"

FEBRUARY 2017
L TO R: Ace Frehley
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 40 One sign of an “all-together-ego” with bands is that they have no trouble including the best of talent, and the members of Frehley’s band are all each capable of frontman duties and mesh along well. Frehley’s bassist, Chris Wyse, has accumulated an impressive resume himself with contributions to The Cult, Ozzy Osbourne, Mick Jagger, along with others. Drummer, Scot Coogan’s resume includes Blue Man Group, Red Zone Rider and Six Foot Nurse. Frehley’s guitarist, Richie Scarlett (The Emperor of Rock ‘n’ Roll) sports a resume listing stints with Mountain, Sebastian Bach, Alice Cooper Group, Charlie Gracie & Chubby Checker. Scarlett reminded me of Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood together in a single package. With the new year here, we thought a calibration run would be in order and stopped in to see the Spazmatics and Powerman 5000 on their Set To Stun Tour. This is the second time I’ve seen a Powerman 5000 show and this time around, they tweaked things around a bit adding a hot female vocalist to the lineup joining frontman, Spider One. This has to have happened very recently as none of the band’s media sites has provided her name at the time of this writing. Nonetheless, I found the current dual vocal lineup crisp and refreshing. For those who have yet to see a Powerman 5000 show, they describe themselves as “Hi Fi Sci Fi Electro Metal Robot Rockers.” Truly original. Many of you have seen a Spazmatics show before. When I arrived, the band was on break. Looking on stage, I thought, “Oh... Bjorn has swapped his Marshall for a Blackstar?” The bigger surprise came while chatting with the bartender, that our regular boys had a schedule change and were up in the northeast at some inauguration event. Mercy!!! <lol> The Spazmatics team this time around included a younger band with Bert out front complete with pocket protector, Jeremy on bass, Skeeter on drums, and Lester on guitar. All in all, it was obvious the audience was having a good time that evening demonstrating that for many, the music is not about the who, but rather the what. A subtle yet interesting difference. I’m good….. HOLD THE PRESS!!! - I hope readers are enjoying the new full

glossy format of The SCENE. Getting the right look on photographs in notoriously darker setting has taken a bit of getting used to, and I’m continuing to work at getting things right with this full-color format. Another learning curve had to do with the new production schedule which significantly splits content into overlapping months. Last month with the hustle and bustle of the holidays piled on top too, I managed to miss mentioning of the winners of the Danny’s Guitar Hacienda / League City’s Easy Street Songwriters Contest. My apologies. Hosted by Angie Emerson, events like this are something, perhaps, we can use more of. I found the presentations I heard throughout the series most sincere and rich in thought. Easy Street made for an interesting venue for most of the genres presented. I felt several of the softer thoughtful songs may have been drowned out at times which to me, allowed the singers to display a characteristic – I’m not sure what was on the judge’s score sheet – for poise and composure. Congratulations to winner Chris Hardy along with second place and runner up winners Tati Raines and Aaron Owens! Well done! IT’S A WRAP - Our pro football team made it further than many expected and our hometown basketball team is having a hot season. With the month of February ahead, we are in the midst of the finest times of the year down here. I call it “Snow Bird Season.” Before we enjoy the March Madness, we’ve all of February to enjoy with Mardi Gras, Epicurean Evening, and the return of crawfish season. If your band is scheduled to play at any of the upcoming Houston Live Stock Rodeo events, drop me a line on Facebook with the details, perhaps we can connect the dots. Thanks! Many of you had a great 2016 and just as many were happy to see the year go. Me? I am excited with the emergence of the young new talent ever popping up on the SCENE and looking forward to seeing them develop and put their chops out for all to enjoy. Pleasing too are the fine scotches of the live music scene that continually get better year in and year out. While it’s sad seeing the departures of Sherlock’s and the Turtle Club, there are some very nice happenings on the horizon that I’ll be looking forward to checking out with you. As always, I’m looking forward catching up and hearing your stories, out and about on The SCENE. See you out there!

Texas Beer Enthusiast Craft Beer Ambassador
ROBERT BREAU @ DAN’S PIZZA CO. Favorite Texas brewed beer? Anything by Brash is typically awesome. I especially love Cali Green and Vulgar Display of Power! If I am at the grocery store, though, I'm always happy with Saint Arnold anything. To me, they are the Old Faithful of Texas craft beers.
BEER LOVERS
TEXAS : Best Breweries, Brewpubs & Bars BY
MIKE CORTEZ
Available at Barnes & Noble Stores (including Webster location). Also on Amazon.com
Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? Resin by Sixpoint is definitely a stand-out in my book, but anything that's fresh and local (and craft) wherever I'm visiting. Or someone that has a good Texas distributor that keeps it moving and up-todate! Overlooked beer classification? Fresh and local! Screw the macro-brew, sell-out, same-beerno-matter-where-you-go junk! Stylistically though, whatever the artisan wants to offer, I want to try. Favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? With a friend. Doesn't matter where you are -- a bar, a concert, home, floating the river, walking down the street, etc. – beer is always best when shared with a friend. Bucket list setting in which you would like to enjoy a beer one day? I would love to visit the Westvleteren Brewery in Belgium to drink all their beers and learn their brewing process. One person living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer. My wife Allison... She's 8 months pregnant, so has not gotten to enjoy a proper beer in quite a while! It'll be nice to share that enjoyment again. One person not living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer. Carl Sagan has always seemed like a cool mofo, like he would have some unexpected insight you wouldn't have thought of otherwise, but totally agree with. - Continued on Page 30

How long have you been a bartender: I've been bartending off and on for about five years now. When I was in the Air Force stationed overseas, I bartended at another pirate bar in South Korea, and a music bar in Italy. What do you love about working at RAILEAN? Working at Railean’s has taught me a lot about the science behind making distilled spirits. YOUR favorite day of the week to work at RAILEAN & why? Tiki Tuesday! No wait… Martini Madness Wednesday!! … But then, there are Fridays and Saturdays when we do the tours… So every day is really a great day to work at Railean Buccaneer Bar.
Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar 341 5th Street, San Leon • 713-545-2742
Top 3 drinks you recommend to customers at RAILEAN? Talk like a Pirate Rum Punch, Texas Dark and Stormy, and the Jalapeño Margarita
On Demand CO2 Delivery Do you have a Signature drink? The Bow Legged Mermaid, The Shark Attack, and the Lava Flow would all have to be my signature drinks. Are there any new drinks you're excited about? The Railean Buccaneer Bar is always making new drinks and creating new spirits. You never know what to expect from us! Direct
713-472-9368 Cylinder Solution Services
What do you do when not at work? When I'm not at work, I'm usually at school working on my degree in education to become a high school math teacher.
The solution for all your CYLINDER needs! We can REfill, REvalve & REtest your Oxygen, Helium, Acetylene, Nitrogen, Argon & CO2 tanks.
The most rewarding part of your job? Seeing happy customers and having repeat customers who enjoyed their experience.
5 words that describe you: Easy going, Cheerful, Conscientious, Dependable, Dedicated Favorite thing about the Bay Area? There is always something to do, and great people to do it with. There is a really cool vibe in the area. Best tip you ever got: Monetarily, I've received a lot of great tips, but the real tips are all the advice about life from people in the area. What do you love about Bartending? The two things I like most about bartending are the wide variety of people you meet on a daily basis, and I love experimenting with new and exciting cocktails. Who inspires you? My inspiration would have to be my dad – who also works here at the Railean Distillery and Buccaneer Bar.

Thing,” was totally enjoying the great Snow Bird weather we have here in Clear Lake and it clearly showed on stage.
Over the years, I had seen Fal Skye at the old Sherlock’s so it was good hearing from lead vocalist Preston McCarty and the rest of the guys, that the band is still keeping busy as ever around town. But for now in 2017, we can regather the gang at Cabo Clear Lake.
According to my buddy Dave Barnett (soundman for the Navigators), this is Frehley’s 3rd visit to the area and according to the band, their first show of 2017 Can you say “recharged?” I found it much more relaxed all around, even Mike the road manager was having a good time. Frehley appeared relaxed and having a good time playing a looser and fuller style of blistering licks – Gusto... His “Shock Me” setup must have gotten overhauled over the break and was fully loaded this evening with a smoke charge large enough for the Reliant arena which made for a pretty crazy showing in the cozy Scout Bar setting. - Continued on Page 31
IT’S A NEW YEAR - Scaffolding in the front, construction on the patio, a new pub going in upstairs – we got a peek at what’s happening at Scout Bar and I’ve gotta say, this should be one doozie of an addition. And with that, it was to the Ace Frehley show in January. Opening for Frehley was Enuf Znuff, a band of more than 30 years, releasing 13 studio albums and a total of 21 CDs to date. Chatting afterwards with original member, bassist Chip Z'Nuff, the Chicago-based band best known for their charting singles "Fly High Michelle" and "New

A band whose name had me guessing that I was in store for an evening of ’60s hippie music. Turned out this is one tight talented bunch of rockers capable of playing much much more of the jukebox. The band features the return of Mary Watson to the stage, one of the original Funksion vocalist (along with Frankie Edwards Stevenson). She had not heard of my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, so I’m pretty positive it was the same the other way around – I’d bet that Jim would’ve enjoyed this band. During the show, I got to thinking that pop singer Linda Ronstadt would’ve made a bigger impact in the rock area had she had a guitarist with a Mesa Boogie sound like Peace Project’s David Watson. After hearing David over the years as a horn player, I’ve no choice but to place him on my guitarist newcomer of the year list – The man can handle the lead breaks. Taking time during the break, I got to know this band a bit better sharing Clyde Dempsey stories with drummer Matt Souder and Russian Flight Controller stories with bassist Steve Capps. Good people…. All in all, this band is party ready. Cheers to the New Year! Book ‘em! NEW SOUND ON THE BEAT - In the January edition of The
THE SCENE
SCENE, I started delving into the new sounds continually being developed by a area musician’s need to create. This month we continue the survey with Sister Gypsies, the trio features Brooke Alyson and Kelli Thompson and Wolff deLong. Many have enjoyed their shows as Nightbird: Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks Tribute Band and Passion Works: A Tribute to Heart Music. Ever providing high-fidelity cover experiences for the audiences, the Sister Gypsies project is a cool creative outlet where classic rock & roll covers favorites (that are rarely played live), are improvised on the spot typically with an audience fixation being the result. This is music that makes you stop what you’re doing and listen. I ventured up Hwy. 146 to the Neon Moon to catch the Sister Gypsies for their first show in the area. If you are into music appreciation and enjoy listening for the intrigue, may I recommend Sister Gypsies? If you’ve been boxed in all day and need to simply get your Ya-Ya’s out, may I suggest…. CABO CLEAR LAKE - So Sherlock’s closed its doors in the Clear Lake area with little warning. Nothing like a hoodwink punch to the gut. Never fear. It seems many of the crowd that once frequented Sherlock’s have landed at Cabo – the place has food and a water view to boot! Things were pretty much hopping with what felt like the old Sherlock’s atmosphere when I stopped by in January. Fal Skye was on the stage belting out their list of Top 40s and sharing the stage with DJ action in the booth. - Continued on Page 40

drink menu. I’m looking forward to returning to Preamble with friends someday and will be sure to dress the part.
ME & JULIO - Which would be the duo of Stevens & Sanchez on the stage at the Cock-eyed Seagull. Michael Stevens has been an area staple over the years playing signature nonstop sets for countless numbers on the Clear Lake SCENE and one of the best at bringing out the fun in everyone. The weather painted the evening as a stay-at-home night, so during break, we were able to catch up on how much the area’s music hangouts has changed in recent years – How in 2016, we saw the closing of Sherlock’s along with the Turtle Club. An Auld Lang Syne to those once-popular hangouts. New Year’s is intended to reflect on the year past, it’s also intended to ring in the new…. NEW STOP ON THE BEAT - Which would be the Preamble Lounge in Webster. This is one classy hangout complete with the atmosphere and ambience perfect for meeting friends, enjoying spirits and holding intelligent conversation. Musically, Preamble is perfectly built acoustically to accomplish a natural reverb ranging between “room,” “hall,” and “cathedral.” The last time I heard such a perfectly tuned room was Jeremy Bradshaw at the old Vito’s further up I-45. Such a room in the hands of the right musician is capable of creating “nirvana class” sound which was what I encountered in January catching a set of Andrew Bateman, soloist extraordinaire. Checking out the audience, choice conversations were being had by all, no doubt encouraged with Bateman’s mentally stimulating music looping the the air along with the Preamble’s extensive

NEW STOP ON THE BEAT PART II - And that would be Scotty’s Pub on the Bay. The last time we stopped by Scotty’s was when they were at the Houston location on Scarsdale. They have since opened a second location at the old Pier 27 Tavern location and are in the steps of moving again into the former La Dolce Vino/Claudio’s location. I’m sure you’ll be reading more about this place in the months ahead. We caught a long-time entertainer, Tom Asbridge (saf-sax.com) stopped in for an enjoyable one-person show. Tom has entertained on the SCENE for years at places including The Treehouse and Turtle Club. In the immortal words of my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, which still hold true today, “During the evening, he accompanied himself on electric guitar, harmonica, tenor saxophone and electric fiddle as well as using some of the best sequenced music tracks that I've heard. Even though I caught Asbridge on a Tuesday night, he still had a goodly number of enthusiastic patrons dancing and having a blast. Asbridge did a remarkably diverse set. Many songs were done by request. Both vocally instrumentally, he handled all of those styles remarkably well. Bravo! Bravo! FYI: Asbridge plays The Treehouse regularly. Made sense when Jim wrote this up, still makes sense today!
NEW BAND ON THE BEAT Which would be Peace Project at Hugh & Jeff’s. I’ll jump straight to the punch line: This band is already on my list of new bands of the year. - Continued on Page 41

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 47 A standing state landmark nearby describes the area as a place where people would gather over the decades, on their way between Galveston and Houston, to enjoy music on the water. The span of music Hourglass plays predominantly centers from that special era in American history 50 years back, when music provided thoughtful messages to the consciousness of her people, and perhaps a dose that would suit well today and everyday. Inland from Noah’s on Grand Avenue, the party was going full tilt at Katie’s with Scott McGill on stage. Bob and Katie Emmons pretty much have gotten things down right at this Post Office turned music appreciation hangout. Scott McGill had his army of revelers out in force and ringing in the new year with proper frolicking. Over the holidays, we recommended Katie’s several times to out-of-town visitors needing someplace to go – All of them loved the talent and reported a great evening, no matter the night. FOLLOW UP - A few months ago, we caught The New Offenders for the first time at Katie’s and knew a confirmation listening to was in order. In January, we had that chance at T-Bone Tom’s. I was very impressed with this group when I heard them at Katie’s and was curious how their show would come off being played while the final game for our home football

team was on the tubes – These guys did not let up one iota, and, in my opinion, saved the night as I watched the game fans through the night turning their seats to the stage. Before going further, a quick shout out to the great staff at T-Bone’s - Ever crisp, courteous, and able to handle parties of any size, whatever the event. Now back to The New Offenders...
Checking out these guys’ facebook traffic, they’ve a following from all across town and demonstrated such with a nice turn out at T-Bone’s. Their music is fun to listen to and if this were the ’70s, they would’ve been likely booked at the national level by now. While their music is uniquely their own sound, I was able to pick out several pleasing nuances throughout the evening – such as hearing frontman Hunter McKithan’s vocal power reminding me of Ronnie Van Zant and bassist Jason Nelson flashing moments of Gene Simmons fun. Lead guitarist, T. Ray Porche reminds me of the talented Bill Hinds and lets loose good old fashion solos covering a span no less than a couple verses and chorus rounds in length while all of the above is solidly held together with Dustin Edwards on the kit. In short, this sums up to me as a musically tight group of spirited kids from the country, all properly schooled in the art of making music, and likely had aunts and uncles that played them Zeppelin, Nugent, Black Sabbath and Dire Straits for lullabies and nursery rhymes out of boom boxes when they were tots. *This* is what makes America great!

Dan’s Pizza Co.: New York Heart, Texas Soul – and now, Houston Beer! By Sarah Piña Just over eight years ago, the pizza pie game changed not only for Clear Lake, but for Houston. When Dan “The Pizza Man” D’Ambrosio started working in local pizzerias more than 20 years ago, a passion was ignited that has carried through the success of what is Dan’s Pizza Co. today, with many who can attest to its motto of “The Way Pizza Should Be!” “I learned the business the best way I could and never gave up on the pizza dream. My Uncle Tony as well as my childhood friend and business partner Alex stepped in and really believed in my vision of making the best pizza in Houston with care, passion, and consistency,” D’Ambrosio said, who has worked in four pizzerias since 1997 and has since owned two, including Dan’s Pizza Co. “We started as a small take-out here, and it just grew and grew,” he said. The success of Dan’s Pizza Co. also ties into D’Ambrosio’s vision of taking his New York roots and fusing them with his Houston upbringing, eventually creating what he has coined as “Hou-York” pizza. “‘Hou-York’ pizza pie is hand-tossed, neighborhood pizza, made with all local ingredients, and we make absolutely everything fresh daily down to the sauce,” he said, making sure to note that they are hearty Sicilian pizza pies, true to his family’s Italian heritage. Of the more than 150 menu items, including 30-something gourmet pizzas, are the family recipe homemade lasagna to oven-baked, never fried wings in more than 20plus flavors, as well as salads, calzones, a variety of subs and more. “It’s all New York blood and New York heart with a Houston theme,” D’Ambrosio said. This focus on Texas is also how Dan’s Pizza Co. continues to distinguish itself in many ways. Last year, Dan’s expanded to have a pizza parlor that prides itself on local Texas beers and many from the Houston area as well. “It’s all Houston-area beer on draft,” D’Ambrosio noted. “Nothing from our draft wall is found outside of the Houston area, and everything that has to do with Texas is in our cooler, from Arlington to Lufkin to Galveston. And this is the only place in the local area that has a Houston-only wall with as many taps as us,” he explained. The 24-tap Houston wall also includes local ciders and sodas, such as St. Arnold’s root beer on tap, adding to the family-friendly, fun atmosphere of Dan’s Pizza Co.’s parlor, which also includes games. “The kids love the free arcade. We call them our Dan’s Fans!” D’Ambrosio said. - Continued on Page 44

Loose Notes by Andy Eng
With the holiday season slowing getting packed away, we were able to ease off the scramble pedal in January, take a breather, and enjoy life a bit more. Hope all’s well on your end…. It was good catching up with many of you out there, hearing your thoughts, and marching on as the new year awaits. Before we do that, let’s take a moment to run down some of what all went down...
NYE - We started the evening off up the road in La Porte at CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Spazmatics @ Scout Bar; The New Offenders Mainly Drinks for dinner, a go at one the area’s best wine @ T-bone Tom’s; Chris Hardy @ Easy Street Songwriters Contest Finals; list and hometown music heroes, Freddy Krc and David Powerman 5000 @ Scout Bar; Hourglass @ Noah’s Ark; Easy Street SongHargraves providing revelers the evening’s “jingle jangle.” writers Contest Finals; Krc & Hargraves @ Mainly Drinks; Peace Project @ Historical descriptions of Mainly Drinks recalls the place as a popular corner drugstore gathering spot for ice cream in the Hugh & Jeff’s; Hourglass @ Noah’s Ark; Krc & Hargraves @ Mainly Drinks prior century. These days, the location continues to be a popular corner lot gathering spot for wining, dining, fine music and company. Before each show and between each set, Krc & Hargraves have this habit of mingling with the entire audience and never starting the music until all howdies are properly exchanged. Throughout the show, shout outs and jokes are shared with the audience making the show an up-close and personal event that scores as “special” in my book. The music at a Krc & Hargraves show is your classic Americana folk with heavy splashes of Beatnik, vintage Hippie, and country twang all dressed in paisley and suede – Good for the soul…. Freddy usually sings and strums the 1st and 3rd beat while David plays the 1/16th & 1/32th note bumble bee runs. With 2016 needing proper send off, it seemed appropriate to catch Hourglass at Noah’s Ark where diner’s were enjoying prime rib specials that evening. The music scene has changed considerably over the years down at the Clifton’s neighborhood. - Continued on Page 43

Who You Need To Hear Right Now!
THRU THE NOISE By Sarah Piña Just over a year ago, three longtime friends began playing their own experimental style, drawing from R&B to country to progressive rock. Today, Kirk McKim (guitar and lead vocals), Mike Meade (bass and vocals), and Walter Cross (drums) regularly play in the Clear Lake area as the Houstonbased, selfdescribed “power trio” Thru the Noise.

The band Upcoming Show: was first called upon last summer to open for THRU THE NOISE Thursday, Feb. 23 New York rock supergroup The Winery Dogs Katie’s Bar & Grill at Warehouse Live, and continue playing music that McKim describes as progressive in nature throughout the area.
Fri., February 17 T-BONE TOMS
“We all have so much to draw on from a musical sense that it’s hard to pigeonhole the band,” said McKim. “We change it up as we’re playing. It’s a free-form thing. I like it because it keeps it fresh; we have a template, and then we’ll just follow each other’s leads, which keeps it fun,” he said. The trio also play and record across the country as successful musicians in their own right. McKim just returned from recording in Florida and Nashville, as well as playing and recording with award-winning actor, filmmaker, writer, and musician Billy Bob Thornton’s band The Boxmasters.
Secondhand Serenade
“I’ve played with them since 2015. Billy Bob is a great guy and a really good songwriter,” he said. “And Walter is a highly sought-after drummer and plays with a lot of bands in town, while Mike is an A-list bass player who is also always working,” he added. These range of experiences, plus their own influences of artists such as Pat Travers, ZZ Top, Rush, The Police, and Cream, just to name a few, give shape to the power trio that is Thru the Noise.

“Here we are doing our own thing, not doing what anyone else is doing. And the name is reflective of that. We are really playing our power trio style ‘through the noise’ of our own existence,” he said. “There is never a set pattern to how it will go down, so no two shows are alike.” What started out as a “fun jam band” now currently has plans to record their own material, too. “We have a lot of material we want to record. It’s just a matter of time. I feel like it’s important for people to hear it,” McKim said. Thru the Noise will play next at Katie’s Bar & Grill on 315 Grand Ave. in Bacliff on Thursday, February 23 (no cover!)
