GRITTY GODDESS Women’s Obstacle/Mud Run returns to Galveston’s Moody Gardens, April 8 On Saturday, April 8, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run returns to Moody Gardens in Galveston. The event is all about women who want to challenge themselves, and have fun in a beautiful venue worthy of a goddess! The 5K- (3.1mile-) course through Moody Gardens includes almost 30 themed obstacles, and incorporates mud, water, foam and props. “It’s a one-of-a-kind course,” says The Gritty Crew, “because Moody Gardens is such a unique venue with a variety of terrain.” The course incorporates the grounds of Moody Gardens, the lazy river at Palm Beach, the banks of Offats Bayou, and the surrounding area. It even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course, enjoy some sweet snacks, and gaze at the “cabana boys.”

vidual registration process. After completing the course, women can rinse off, change clothes, relax and enjoy a frozen yogurt sundae and a complimentary beer. “This event is all about camaraderie, challenging yourself physically, and most of all, having a full day of fun,” says The Gritty Crew, “because every woman deserves a day off!” Although the minimum age to participate is 10 years old for the 5k, on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. there is also the GRITTY KIDS event, a shorter 1K obstacle/mud run for all children, both male and female, ages 6 to 13.

The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive, so participants can complete the course at their own pace and enjoy every moment. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will start every 10 minutes beginning at 8:30 a.m., The first wave at 8:30 is the co-ed wave so your significant other can join you! Each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena, and Venus. Teams must register as individuals for the same time/wave and then “create” or “join” a team during their indi-

CRAWFISH SEASON

7th Annual Kemah Crawfish Festival Make plans to attend the seventh annual Kemah Crawfish Festival on March 24, 25, 26. Experience the sights of the water, the thrill of a big party with like-minded individuals, the sounds of the best zydeco, country and Texas party rock music, and the taste of ice cold beer as it combines with the seasoning on hot, scrumptious crawfish.

Whether you plan “to keep calm and peel on,” or “go get your peel on,” partying and having a great time is on the top of the list of things to do. This crawfish celebration will be under the Kemah bridge on Third Street where it started. The waterside location provides a better ambience. “We will be cooking crawfish out of our new cooking units that will be able to produce 6,000 pounds of delicious boiled crawfish per hour!” said Doug Davenport of Gulf Coast Festivals. These mudbugs are “spiced right and priced right” at $2.99 per pound. And you better bet they will taste fresh, too, since they are trucked in daily from farms in Louisiana. In addition to the crawfish, the festival will offer other Cajun dishes and festival cuisine such as alligator, frog legs, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn dogs, funnel cakes, nachos, fried oreos and twinkies, gyros and much more! “We are all about eating and music,” said Davenport. He recounted that in the years past, the event became one big dance floor. The live musical entertainment kicks off at 3 p.m. Friday.

The event hours are Friday from noon to 10 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. Purchase your ticket at the gate or online at www.gulfcoastfestivals.com. What’s your Background/Experience: Went to Culinary School at Le Cordon Bleu in Los Angeles Your Specialty: European and American cuisine Signature Dish: At Stuttgarden, the signature dish is the bangers and mash. It is a sausage served with mashed potatoes, gravy and german braised cabbage called Rotkohl in German. Despite having a British name, it is the most authentic German dish we have on the menu. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? During my employment at Hotel Sorella I was totally star struck when I was filling in at the cafe and I made Adam Carolla coffee. Cooking tip or technique for our readers: I have always felt that everyone should know how to roast a chicken. There are many different ways to get the same results. Here is a pretty simple recipe: You will need a cast iron skillet or a heavy duty saute pan that does not have a rubber or plastic handle will do too. You will also need butchers twine which is sold at most grocery stores. 1 whole chicken 3-4 lb. average; 1 large yellow onion large dice; 1 jumbo sized carrot, medium dice; 1 bunch celery medium dice; 1 lemon cut in 4 pieces; 2 tbl butter, softened; salt and pepper 1 package of fresh poultry seasoning from the fresh herbs section. If your market doesn’t sell it, then 1 bunch of thyme; 2 rosemary stems; 2 sage stems; 2 oregano stems. All minced together. - Preheat oven to 400 degrees F ; - Start by mixing the butter with the salt, pepper and fresh herbs; - Use your fingers to loosen the skin from the breasts but do not remove the skin - Rub 1/4 of the butter mixture into that area between the skin and the breasts - Rub the rest of the butter mixture inside the cavity of the chicken STUTTGARDEN TAVERN - KEMAH -stuff the bird with the lemon pieces 609 Bradford Ste 203, Kemah • 281-339-7826 - With the help of YouTube, truss the bird with butchers twine - Place your cast iron on high heat with canola oil, avoid olive oil because of its low smoke point. - Once the oil it hot, almost to a smoking point, place your chicken “breast side” down and sear until golden brown - Afterwards, sear each leg until golden brown, then the back of the chicken - Remove the chicken from the pan and add your vegetables, - Sauté the vegetables until soft and the pan is deglazed - Place the chicken “back side” down on the pan on top of the vegetables and place the pan in the oven uncovered - Roast for 1 hour or until the leg reaches an internal temp of 165 degrees F. - Let rest for 20 minuted then carve.

SCOOTERVILLE: Clear Lake Cruising Made Affordable, Stylish, and Fun! By Sarah Piña If you are searching for a stylish, affordable solution for commuting around the Lake, or a fun ride for cruising on Galveston Island, look no further than Scooterville in Kemah. This locallyowned shop offers a wide variety of Wolf brand scooters in styles ranging from sleek European to modern and sporty.

SERVICING CLEAR LAKE AREA SINCE 2005 EX-150 (150cc) MSRP $1,599

“I started this company 12-plus years ago, and we’ve been in our new Kemah location for about 6 months,” said Gary Gamble, general manager of Scooterville. “I was an airline pilot for 40 years, but I’ve always liked scooters, so I opened this business. Here, we do sales, repairs, parts, and even consignments,” he said. The many benefits of owning a scooter are perhaps some things people have never considered. The scooters are generally priced at under $2,000, and Gamble noted that insurance normally runs at about $80 a year.

“I have a lot of customers who use them to ride to work. They are excellent for running around the Clear Lake area, and they keep up with the traffic,” Gamble said. Additionally, college students and their parents find them especially beneficial. “Many times students have difficulty parking on campus with a car, but with a scooter, they can drive it onto campus and park it easily. Not only that, but parents (or students) can buy one and insure it much cheaper than they could a car,” he said. Gamble said, generally speaking, scooters are really the best allaround stylish and economical solutions for short commutes. “If you don’t want to tie up lot of money, you just can’t beat it for going back and forth to work. A lot of people aren’t serious enough to get into a bigger motorcycle or a $5,000 scooter, so they’ll get one of these,” Gamble said, noting that many of the scooters get 80 miles per gallon. Scooterville can color-customize the scooters, and they also offer 90-day layaway option. “We will work with all customers interested in owning one. We take pride in our five-star rating for service and quality,” he said. Scooterville is located at 1145 FM 518 in Kemah. For more information, call 281-538-0983. They are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit www.scooterville.bike for the latest styles and special offers, or simply stop in, browse the in-store showroom, and let Gary and the staff assist you in finding your ideal scooter!

BOHEMIAN ARTISTRY ARTS Featured Artist: Nicole Angelo

By Kelley Dawson

“It was just happenstance,” told local artist Nicole Angelo who recently began painting in September of 2015. Angelo shared upon returning from New York City to Baytown, Texas, she wanted to do a welcome home party and created three pieces. She said from those paintings she booked a well-known Earth Day festival and then worked her first “Straight Outta Baytown” music fest painting for bands and to live music. “Painting to music and spoken word poetry is a way to create,” stated Angelo. She sees a shift to the combination of art and music. When painting to live music, Angelo’s mediums include spray paints, acrylics, markers, and modge podge. Additionally she brings “a bucket of anything to throw on [the canvas] such as fabric, lace, ribbon, plus elements of earth like sand and stone.” Whether creating to the sounds of others or painting on her own, Angelo’s avant-garde works are enrapturing and somehow comforting at the same time. The offbeat designs and radiant colors mixed with tangibles form each unique piece. “It is organized chaos,” declared Angelo. She said, “A lot of times I come across found objects. I see something that sparks an idea and go from there.” Angelo explained her paintings create themselves. “The intentional plan is not the end result,” she

admitted. Angelo characterizes herself as a very Bohemian artist and describes her art as “diverse, mechanic pop art and definitely has a psychedelic element to it.” Angelo informed her inspirations come from historical and local artists’ works, as well as graffiti murals throughout New York and Houston areas. “Graffiti is now a more acceptable form of art and is really amazing,” she expressed. Angelo indicated she is venturing out from mixed-media paintings and currently designing art from vinyl records. She also produces multimedia design and graphics. Angelo mentioned she develops logos for up and coming bands and artists pro bono to pay it forward. She affirmed, “Gifting is a great way to create and give back.” Angelo said she really appreciates other artists’ advice and helping each other grow and be successful. As a student at Lee University, Angelo revealed, “Art funds my education. I never thought that would be possible.” Angelo confessed she is still getting used to being an artist. She said, “I think every day, ‘This is awesome.’” To view more Angelo Artistry visit www.angeloartistry.com or email at angeloartistry@gmail.com. Check out Angelo’s six-month art installation at La Poz French Café & Bistro (4622 E. NASA Pkwy.) in Seabrook.

location is a beautiful home on Galveston Bay reminiscent of New England’s East Coast style inside and out. It has been featured in Southern Living magazine in 2006 and 2007, and won two ASID awards. The owner has combined traditional pieces with nautical pieces seamlessly.

The League City location is a charming 1905 Victorian home that is a true labor of love. Owners took on the herculean task of moving it a few blocks, but had to have the top floor removed because it was too tall for the trees. The home was built of reclaimed wood from homes destroyed in Galveston in 1900. Original floors, still in the house, are heart of pine, which is extinct. - Continued on Page 26

DAY BY THE BAY : From Page 21 Butler Longhorn Museum is on the tour this year, and it illustrates all the history of this community treasure. Milby Butler and five other prominent Texas ranchers were tasked with breeding longhorns in the 1920’s because the herds were almost depleted. The Butler Longhorn is the most prevalent today and the museum is a testament to the efforts of those breeders. It is filled with local history long before NASA, has an old-world western theatre, murals, an education room, event rooms, and a gallery that features local artists. The Butler ranch was about 55,000 acres and this museum reminds us of the past that helped build and mold our area. Family, friends, and donations support this gem in the area, which is housed in the large home of Walter Hall.

Astronaut Clayton C. Anderson (left) visited Tookie's Seafood last month to present owner Barry Terrell (right) with an awesome picture that he shot with his personal camera of our area and Galveston Bay from Space (International Space Station). Be sure to stop by Tookie's Seafood in Seabrook to see the large scale canvas photo hanging on their wall.

The story of the Nassau Bay home is the story of Nassau Bay, perseverance and vision in the rebuilding after Hurricane Ike in 2008. This home, which the current owners have occupied since 1988, was built in 1965. Thirty-six inches of water destroyed the first floor in Ike. Through a partial FEMA grant, the house has been raised 10 feet, as have more than thirty homes in Nassau Bay. The interior of the home is the perfect setting for the pre-tour party.

Day by the Bay Home Tour is a fun weekend provided by the symphony and again, all the funds help the music program in our local schools.

Weekends on the Water

Epic Lunar Experience to Land at Space Center Houston After spending 46 years parked at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, the Apollo 11 command module Columbia has been given one more mission. And it is good news for our local area as Space Center Houston will be the first of four stops of a new exhibit which will leave the Smithsonian on a national tour for the first time since 1971. Space Center Houston will be the only location where guests can see the space capsules for both the first and last lunar landings. The awe-inspiring “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission” exhibit, on display Oct. 14-March 18, 2018 at Space Center Houston, is part of the nonprofit’s 25th anniversary jubilee. The center is the first and only Smithsonian Affiliate in greater Houston. “Houston is associated with lunar exploration and our guests will be the first to trace the steps of the first voyage to the moon in this spectacular new exhibit, as well as the last voyage in our Apollo 17 capsule,” said William T. Harris, president and CEO of the science and space learning center. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience these extraordinary space craft in the same location.” Opening just before the nonprofit celebrates its 25th anniversary on Oct. 16, the new exhibit dives into the rich history of the Apollo program. The Apollo 11 command module — the only portion of the historic spacecraft to safely return humans to Earth — will leave the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum for the first time in 46 years for the national tour. This first stop of the national tour is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people to see both command modules -- the Apollo 11 and the Apollo 17 -- as well as an array of original Apollo-era artifacts. The nonprofit Space Center Houston is the home of the Apollo 17 command module, the last mission to land men on the moon. Completing the ultimate lunar experience, Space Center Houston’s extensive collection gives guests a close look at the largest collection of moon rocks on public display including one you can touch. It also has astronaut Pete Conrad’s moonwalking suit and the presidential podium from which John F. Kennedy delivered his speech imploring America to reach for the lunar surface. Through original Apollo 11 flown artifacts, models, videos and interactives, guests will learn about the historic journey of the Apollo 11 crew — Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. “Destination Moon” will include an interactive 3-D tour, created from high-resolution scans of Columbia performed at the Smithsonian. The interactives will allow guests to explore the entire craft including its intricate interior, one that has been inaccessible to the public until now. The nonprofit is the first of only four museums in the country that will showcase this amazing artifact from NASA’s race to the moon. The traveling exhibition, a partnership of the National Air and Space Museum and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), will commemorate the 50th anniversary in 2019 of the extraordinary achievement of humanity’s first step on the moon. The SCENE has been named the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. Look for our Convention & Visitors Bureau racks in hotels and visitors centers. INDASKIES NEW EP: Continued From Page 48

TROPICAL WINES: Continued From Page 37

“It’s going to be a self-titled EP of 5 tracks, and we plan on doing a dub version afterwards. The songs are our fans’ favorites, the ones that everyone keeps asking us to play. We have had live cuts before, but we wanted a professional copy of the music for everyone. Then you can get ready for a bunch of new material for another album after this!” Also in the band’s immediate future are more release parties for the EP at Fatty’s on March 24, as well as a show with reggae legends The Wailers in April. InDaSkies have also been invited to play at the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin this month, a huge milestone in the career of any musician.

Between 4 to 7 fermented pounds of fruit are used per bottle, Michele added. “And it’s purely the fruit, there is nothing else added to it,” she said. “There are no added sugars, so it’s not sugar-sweet like you would get from a moscato. It’s just the sweetness from the fruit itself, very light and crisp. We also have sparkling wine, and we just got a smoothie machine in, so we now serve three flavors of wine smoothies,” she said. Currently in rotation to enjoy in-house are orange (comparable to dreamscicle), strawberry and white sangria, though they carry 10 different smoothie mixes. The tropical fruit wines, which currently boast more than 250 awards, are available by the glass, the bottle, and handmade gift sets in their boutique, which offers a wide variety of winerelated gifts. Guests may sample up to four complimentary types of wines, which range from Florida Sunset Pineapple, to Key Lime and even the best-selling Orange Coffee, though wine flights are also available. And the fun doesn’t stop there! Paradise Tropical Wines Kemah have already hosted several fun events, including birthday parties and even wine craft classes.

“We’re going to go out there and push the Texas reggae scene, which is growing and changing. It’s just different here. Between me and some of the local artists like Soulfiya, Louis Morales from DEM, Jon Clark from Sullivan’s Vessel, and Randy Mendoza from High Mile, we’re all trying to bring a coalition to Texas and to help bring each other up,” Serrato said. “That’s what we want. Something always brings you back to music, whether it’s reggae or not. Music helps a lot of people come together.”

“For special occasions like birthdays, guests are welcome to celebrate, and they can bring food in or we can bring in food for them as well. Also, every 6 to 8 weeks, we will do a class, always with a wine or coastal-theme, but we can also do private classes,” Michele said.

Be sure to join the Texas reggae fun and celebrate InDaSkies’ EP release at Scout Bar on March 21 at their show with Katchafire, Inna Vision and The High Mile! Tickets are $16 and the show starts at 7 p.m. Their EP will be for sale at the show and also available for download. “The Sharks,” which will include an all-star lineup of musicians including former Eagle Don Felder, among others, for this performance, was named by Quaid’s young son.

“My son, who was 9 at the time, he named us The Sharks — and I always say thank God he wasn’t into dinosaurs.”

HEAD INTO THE SUNSET… Hey all, before I wrap it up, I want to make a quick shout out to Rob Carroll, Godfather Emeritus of the local music scene who retired in February and will be rejoining his family overseas. I first met Rob during the IkeFest series and would hang around more during the Heads and Tails and Jackie’s Brickhouse days. He was raised in the northeast, traveled the world in the military, Rob had a personable no-nonsense style perfect for Clear Lake. Aside from his knack for bringing in quality entertainment from outside the area, he supported local live music while maintaining a business point of view, an essential symbiosis. Rob was a friend of many. All the best!

SCOTTY’S PUB BY THE BAY: Cont. From Page 45 “We’re keeping some of the big sellers, like our pork belly tacos. But since I think duck, for example, is really under-utilized, I’m planning on several new dishes that incorporate it, including a duck confit mac ‘n’ cheese, which we’ll call ‘Quack ‘n’ Cheese,’ as well as a smoked duck breast BLT,” Sexton said, adding that other “fun new” items would also be in the works. In terms of entertainment, Scotty’s Pub will continue to have pool, poker, several flat-screen TVs (including a huge projection screen) for sports and other events, as well as live music – but now, there’s even more guests can look forward to. “With this space, we will also have a stage for music, as well a dance floor, which will be new,” Sexton said. And with St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, “It will be a huge party!” he said. Scotty’s Pub by the Bay is now located at 3202 Marina Bay Drive in Kemah (next to the boat slips). IT’S A WRAP - March Madness is upon us, so may your brackets keep you in to the final game. Pitchers and catchers have reported to the Grapefruit League, and I’m actually looking forward to a great season this year. I read an article where they want to use Texas for qualifying self-driving car technology. Frankly, I’d be afraid and would prefer hanging out at one of the many fine places we have here. Spring break is coming and when your friends and family come in for the week, be ready and have a copy of The SCENE ready to go. I’m sure they’ll want to hit the ground running. Thanks everybody for taking time to share your stories and being a part. It’s time for folks to get the spring-cleaning chores out of the way, and when you do, the SCENE will be ready. See you out there!

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 34

Before going further, I need to make a quick shout out to the awesome staff at Katie’s: Ever friendly, crisp, and never keeping you waiting, these folks are amongst the best in town. Holding down the groove on bass is DC Olson & Urban Urbano on drums. Included in the line up is Vicor DiValentino as their “behind the scenes” guy. Interesting about this five-piece group is that they carry three strong 6-string guitarist (Scott Mayo, Sam Massey & Adam Johnson) each capable of headlining their own band, affording really nifty backand-forth lead moments and powerful in-unison phrases. Aside from their musical touch and ability to get patrons onto the dance floor is their friendly stage presence, sharing conversation with the audience, most of whom have never seen this band before. The more, the mightier: Smokehouse Guitar Army. VALENTINE’S DAY - Scored a good one this year as we joined up with the merry flock of Parrot Heads at Railean Distillery and Buccaneer Bar for this year’s Valentine’s Dance. Kelly Railean and the great folks at the Buccaneer Bar are simply fantastic when it comes to hospitality, service and fun. On stage this evening was Robert Greaney with his tone monster combination of a classic Gibson 137 playing into a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Something that evening was unique about Robert’s playing that evening as the verse, chorus and jam flowed along with an underlying tempo

that was comfortably natural – not your typical beat machine/looper rig. When I asked him about this, he explained how he actually performed and recorded all of the backing instrument parts (drums, bass, pad, etc.) that was loaded into the sequencer. He knew the song so well, it let him never play a song the same way twice. *This* is over the top… Recording skills aside, we were very impressed with Greaney’s playing skills, laying out technically skilled runs with an ease that made you wonder if Don Felder or Steuart Smith was in the room. Railean Buccaneer Bar for Valentine’s Day. We might need to make this a tradition! HAPPY 43RD BIRTHDAY - Goes out to T-Bone Tom’s. This place will likely become a State Historical Site someday, but until then, I spent this special birthday evening along with a patio full of diners enjoying the Snowbird Season weather and Wood & Wind on the stage. It’s coming up to the 10-year mark since I first crossed paths with Bobbie and Steve Revak, and I still find it remarkable how they connect and win over first-time listeners with their eclectic adaptation of classic covers. I was watching an audience listener shout out a request for Allman Brothers, and got practically an entire set. Speaking of Allman Brothers, I’ve only heard two local bands who were convincingly able to pull off Whipping Post – and Wood & Wind is one of them. Steve was experimenting with a monopole tower of sound which did a very nice job projecting throughout the entire patio clearly yet at a comfortable db level for pleasant intelligent conversations. I think he’s onto something here. Needing to decompress from a crazy day at the office? Come enjoy a dinner at T-Bone Tom’s and hang around the evening for the music. Your soul will thank you. Happy Birthday! - Continued on Page 32

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35

Preston and I replaced original founding band members Barry La Chance and Larry Pearl who began playing at the Jalapeño Tree in 1976. We were a house band at Gallaghers’ Steak House in from 1979 to 1989. Mike Greco joined us on keyboards from 1981 to 1991. Buddy Brown played drums from 1976 until moving out of state. We are fortunate to have played many private parties, weddings and other venues over the years. We are still having fun!!” HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KHRIS!!! - In February, Khris Harding had a birthday and in proper fashion, celebrating while broadcasting live to an international audience during the Punkstar Full Throttle

LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULEZ - Mardi Gras this year will be in the books when you read this. Hope you were able to partake of the festivities. We were able to cover a few events ourselves in February, the annual Kemah Parade and Mardi Party at T-Bones where we got our Zydeco fix with Zydeco Revolution, and the Krewe du Lac Royal Ball where I got to catch LC Roots for the very first time. The annual Kemah Mardi Gras Parade over the years has been a community and got hoodwinked moving up a week earlier thanks to the Superbowl coming to Houston. Nonetheless, I’ve no doubt parade planners will huddle and be back stronger next year. The Royal Ball was a full-house event at The Aquarium this year and with the Yachty Gras happening, Kemah was packed. LC Roots was a delightful musical treat playing an easy listening set during dinner before lighting things up after the Royal Court presentations. Local lore tells of the days these guys were the house band at Gallagher's and the Jalapeño Tree, back when the neighborhoods were young. They’ve recorded only one album in their early days, a 45rpm, which provides proof that fun party bands can get by without recording. My favorites of the night from the first set was their spine-tingling rendition of Seven Bridges Road and their entire second set of nonstop good oldfashioned vintage rock 'n' roll party music. I got the chance to catch up with frontman Faron Daigle, “We currently work as a trio with original bass player, Randy Wills, Preston De Meritt on guitar, steel, banjo and vocals and myself.

Show live from Scout Bar. What a doozie! An impressive turnout filled the house that evening including Sui Gordon of Second Chance Productions, Reach Down Radio, and musical guests Shadow Council (an impressive sounding local band from San Leon) and Orr (who is currently recording with Chris Loper at Rock Room Studio. For those of you needing something to do on a Wednesday, you may want to check this action out - There’s something about bands taking it up a level and sounding great when they’re playing for a live worldwide audience. - Continued on Page 33

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 36

Tonight was a relaxing setting as the musicians were testing out their new arrangements and originals on the live stage. Heads up: The 9th Annual ’60s Hippie Party with Hourglass is coming up on April 1, an event that’s always a great time. Mark your calendar! PATIO SEASON - Is here and we caught Danny Kristensen at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack where the aroma of cayenne hangs in the Kemah breeze, where one can find themselves neck deep in crawfish, and 5 pounds per couple is the usual starting order. Kristensen was doing well flying solo this evening, running through an assortment of Beatles, Bread, Glen Campbell, Byrds, Pink Floyd, and Modern English. One of my favorite shows is when he is with his full band rocking the dinner crowd with Boardwalk fireworks going off over the harbor. Those days lie ahead and frankly dinner at the Swamp Shack with Kristensen serenading on the stage suits well, too.

Competition amongst this season’s weekly winners was very heated at this year’s Super Bowl half time event. While preparing for the event, we partook of a new drink on the menu called "Hurricane Ike" – a subject the good folks at T-Bone’s know a thing or two about. This beverage is a mini bucket full of rums and fruits coming across as a punch with plenty of wallop. Two things missing at this year’s Super Bowl were the beloved Clydesdales commercials and the Bud Light Gals. However, Matt Lorfing, representative from Karbach, was on-site offering drink specials throughout the evening. Matt passed along that Karbach is pretty much being left alone to do what they’ve always done – a much different treatment than when the King of Beer went Belgium/Brazilian. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. My final Super Bowl thoughts? Bill Belichick pulled off an incredible Crazy Ivan on the Falcons, much like he pulled on the Texans. 18 STRINGS - Whenever I’m asked by out-of-towners where’s a good local place for blues and rock & roll, I’ve never failed by suggesting Katie’s to the asker. Taking a dose of my own medicine in February, I stopped in and checked out Smokehouse Guitar Army and easily scored a great show along with the entire house. This five-piece band from San Antonio is a proud member of the San Antonio Blues Society, The New Braunfels Blues Society and The Houston Blues Society – Blues to the bone.

FLICKERBALL V Congrats to Chuck Grassau for a repeat winning performance at the 5th Annual Flickerball Championship at TBone Tom’s.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 47 The surprise of the evening was catching local Chef Colin Jackson who has joined up with Executive Chef Jade Brown, a multi-year high-end Epicurean award winner. I’ve had the good fortune of enjoying Jackson’s creations over the years and have no doubt the team of Jackson with Brown will be a duo over at the Hilton to put on your watchlist. Newcomers to the SCENE this year did an OUTSTANDING job and choosing Rookie of the Year honors is difficult. Water’s Edge drew the honors of hosting the wine table and served an incredible number throughout the evening. Stuttgarden Tavern did a great job letting locals know of their new location in the Kemah Lighthouse District. Last month, I dropped by Preamble Lounge and Craft House for the first time and was blown away with the beverage experience. This month, I was blown away further seeing Joshua Jones and his staff’s approach gourmet appetizers every bit as impressively as their beverage experience. With a great representation of older established and new up and coming eateries we’ve got on The SCENE, it’s clear that we’ve got it good. Check them out! OVER THE TOP - Epicurean Evening wrapped up at a decent hour, so the boss and I went to check out the Starset show with Gemini Syndrome happening at Scout Bar and the release of their new album, Vessels. Reports that fans were forming a line for 6 hours before the show was a great sign that the place would be packed. It was! And getting an angle was tough. This was my first time to see this band and not exactly sure what to think. Let me try. In every band’s career comes a point where it is either time to throw it in or to go all the way for pop perfection. From what I saw, Starset opted to go WAY FAR ALL THE WAY. The first clue I had that this was going to be a cool show was seeing bass guitarist Ron

THE SCENE

DeChant on the entrance ramp in a spacesuit outfit that was fresh and ready for action compared to the museum garments I saw earlier that evening at Space Center Houston. The second clue I got was when his spacesuit jetpack fired off full thrusters on the intro. Wow!!! According to the band’s website, they describe their genre as “Cinematic Rock” – a style I had not heard of. According to me, this band is well schooled on the art of making music, motion pictures, special effects and costumes from Columbus, Ohio. Frontman, Dustin Bates, had a vocal style and down-to-earth stage demeanor, reminding me of the Gallagher brothers (Oasis), yet the show was anything but down-to-earth, though he did end every song with a humble “Thank you!” Joining DeChant in full spacesuit garb was lead guitarist Brock Richards and drummer Adam Gilbert with all three performing in closed-in sonic confines yielding a uniquely rare sound, similar to the vocals in Three Dog Night’s “Liar.” Very well done… From my position, I was able to get a good look at traveling tour members Jonathan Kampfe and Siobhan Cronin, providing pads and accents on cello and violin, taking the show into the cosmic zone. All in all, I’m still not sure how to describe this show, but do give it a coveted “over the top” mention for the month. OPEN MIC - After the Star-set show, I was clearly in need of getting my head together so I stopped in to one of my favorite neighborhood bars, the Cockeyed Seagull. Angie Emerson was running the Open Mic that night as she does every Thursday at the Seagull and each Tuesday at Easy Street Lounge. - Continued on Page 35

Paradise Tropical Wines Kemah introduces tropical fruit wine to Texas By Sarah Piña It’s one of those hot days in Kemah, and a cool, refreshing drink is in order. Wine normally sounds great, but a glass of Merlot or Cabernet, while delicious, isn’t exactly the thing that will hit the spot, though. Fortunately, Paradise Tropical Wines Kemah has several solutions to quench your thirst and your palette—both new to the area, and exclusive to Texas. Tropical fruit wine may be a product new to many, but just one taste is enough to make someone wonder why they haven’t heard of it before! Michele and Salvador Cisneros opened Paradise Tropical Wines Kemah last fall. After a business trip to Arkansas, and a visit to St. Petersburg, Florida (the origin of the wines), the husband and wife team were convinced they had to bring these wines back to Texas. Salvador wasn’t even a wine drinker previous to the trips; but he, like many others who have now tried their tropical fruit wines, finally found a wine that suited his palette. “I didn’t drink wine before. But just one sample completely changed my mind about what wine could be,” he said, true to their motto of “Finally! Wines That Taste Good!”

And the rest, as they say, is history. The tasting room, complete with a seating area, boutique, and a “Jimmy Buffet, Margaritaville kind of feel” opened Labor Day weekend 2016, and currently offers more t han 30 kinds of pure fruit wines, including 10 sparkling wines, and even wine smoothies! “It’s very natural. We are a non-traditional wine made strictly from the fruit fermented to make the wine,” Salvador said. “We have everything from dry to sweet, to semi-sweet and dark, depending on the fruit. It’s a great quality crisp wine, with no added sulfites. Since it’s not made from grapes, there are no tannins, and they are also gluten-free. Depending on your palette and what fruit you like, that’s the wine you’ll like,” he said. - Continued on Page 32

KAITLYN FOSTER @ SKALLYWAG SUDS & GRUB Favorite Texas brewed beer? This is the hardest question to answer...and it's the first one!! If I had to pick only one...Brash Pussy Wagon IPA! Brash is Houston-based and making some killer beers!

BEER LOVERS

TEXAS : Best Breweries, Brewpubs & Bars BY

MIKE CORTEZ

Available at Barnes & Noble Stores (including Webster location). Also on Amazon.com

Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? AleSmith .394 Pale Ale out of San Diego! Just wish we could get them to distribute in Texas! Overlooked beer classification? I am a HUGE fan of sour beers. They're beginning to trend now, but for a very long time, they have gone unnoticed. The Desthil Sour Plum Stout is my absolute favorite. Favorite setting which you have enjoyed a beer? At the top of the Torrey Pines hiking trail in San Diego...It'll take your breath away. Bucket list setting in which you would like to enjoy a beer one day? While swimming with the pigs in Exuma, Bahamas. One person living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer. Bernie Sanders. One person not living with whom you would like to enjoy a beer. Hands down...Johnny Cash! The State of the Texas Craft Beer scene is Booming! When I'm not working or drinking beer, I'm ... Reading, watching football, doing yoga, eating, or most likely sleeping! Ha ha! Other than current profession, what position/profession would you like to attempt? Food blogger or X-ray tech. Who inspires you? My mother. She is the most amazing human being! How long have you been working at Skallywag Suds N Grub? 3...almost 4 years.

How long have you been a bartender + How long at VOLCANO ROOM? I've have been a bartender on and off for 4 years. Here for the last 7 months. What do you love about working at VOLCANO? The ability to creative craft cocktails! It’s exciting being able to create drinks from fresh ingredients and different spirits. YOUR favorite day of the week to work at VOLCANO & why? Throwback Thursdays and Mondays! On Thursdays, our DJ plays ’80s, ’90s and old school classics. On Mondays, it’s Mac & Cheese Mondays – and who doesn't love mac & cheese?! Plus there’s free play on arcade games with a drink purchase. I'm always up to challenge someone to my high score with a game of Galaga. Top 3 drinks & food you recommend to customers at VOLCANO? The Volcano Old Fashion is my number one favorite. It's a different twist on an original old fashion. I like to recommend Rye Whiskey also: Demerara rum, and our house made turbinabo syrup. You can’t go wrong! Our Painkiller and the Cucumber Mule would follow up right behind. The Volcano Dip is hands down AMAZING! It’s guacamole with a twist. It has crumbled goat cheese and toasted Texas pecans in it. Do you have a Signature drink? My signature drink is my Bloody Mary! Also known as my tomato soup! It's delicious at anytime of the day.

The solution for all your CYLINDER needs! We can REfill, REvalve & REtest your Oxygen, Helium, Acetylene, Nitrogen, Argon & CO2 tanks.

Are there any new drinks you're excited about ? Yes! We are going to add more new drinks out for the spring/summer sea-

Volcano Room 4650 NASA Pkwy, Seabrook 281-549-4080 son. I can't wait! Refreshing is just a clue to what’s coming. What do you do when not at work? When I'm not a work I'm a mom. It's an amazing feeling being able to come home to my daughter, she'll always make a long day at work so much better! The most rewarding part of your job? Being able to make a drink for a customer off of their taste palette. It's more like a challenge to me. Getting it right is what makes it satisfying. 4 words that describe you: Clever, opinionated, ambitious and fun! Favorite thing about the Bay Area? Paddle boarding. It's getting to be right around the time the water is perfect!

Everyone’s Irish For A Day!

ST. PATRICK’S DAY BEERFEST Stuttgarden Tavern to unveil Texas’ largest, indoor, air-conditioned Beer Garden for massive Galveston County St. Patrick’s Day Event The fastest-growing nightlife brand in Galveston County isn’t slowing down as the team behind the popular Stuttgarden Tavern portfolio of venues are putting the final touches on converting the former Mall of the Mainland Food Court into a one-of-a-kind indoor beer garden and festival space in time for celebrating its grand opening with a Texas-sized St. Patrick’s Day Beer Fest on Friday, March 17. This inaugural family-friendly event will feature all the ingredients necessary for a proper St. Patrick’s Day event including food, beer, dancing, beer, live music and even more beer. Many of the area’s most popular breweries will be on hand and competing for the “Best of Fest Award,” which will be awarded at the end of the event based on festival-attendee vote. One of the first breweries to commit to the event was Galactic Coast Brewing. “Galveston County’s oldest brewery wouldn’t miss Galveston County’s largest St. Patrick’s Day event,” explained Galactic Coast Brewing co-founder Mike Taylor. “We look forward to participating in many of the upcoming events and festivals planned for this impressive event facility.”

Texas Breweries Attending

Unlike at many beer festivals, there is plenty of parking, nearby lodging and the entire event will be held indoors with air-conditioning and plenty of permanent restrooms -- no port-a-potties at this beer festival. Tickets will be $30 at door and $25 in advance through March 15. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at Stuttgarden Texas City. The ticket price will include a punch card that will allow guests to sample beers from all the breweries. Who is ready to get their Irish on?

Scotty’s Pub by the Bay Has Moved! WHAT’S NEW! By Sarah Piña This month Scotty’s Pub by the Bay will be serving up their handpicked craft beer and delicious, creative food made in-house that Scotty’s customers have come to love since they first opened in 2011 – but now, in a new location, with some great new additions! Scotty’s Pub by the Bay is now located at the end of the same strip on Marina Bay Drive that they have called home since last June. The move means a larger space for the pub, complete with a beautiful patio and outdoor bar, which features a stunning fire and water fountain. Scott Sexton, Jr., owner and manager of the pub along with his father, Scott Sexton, Sr., and longtime family friend Quinton Turner, teaches culinary arts at a local college, which furthermore translates into upcoming innovative eats at the new Scotty’s location. - Continued on Page 32

Loose Notes by Andy Eng

Super Bowl and Mardi Gras have come and gone. Groundhog Day this year was partly cloudy, so whatever the verdict, we’re bound to have great weather for awhile as Crawfish, Patio and Snow Bird season is upon us. I hope the month of February was a good one for you, but before I get ahead, let’s run down some of what all went down on The SCENE!

EPICUREAN EVENING - Aerospace has gone through quite a change over the past decade and Space Center Houston has too with the new shuttle trainer exhibit and futuristic presentations of exploration to Mars. This year’s Epicurean Evening reflected this change in kind with our CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Smokehouse Guitar Army @ Katie’s Bar; Open long-time favorites along with several new eateries that have Mic Night @ Cock-eyed Seagull; Starset @ Scout Bar; Epicurean Evening @ Space Center Houston; Smokehouse Guitar Army @ Katie’s Bar. recently arrived on the SCENE. Mamacita’s was in fine form, providing a large spread along with traditional mariachi music to serenade the local diners within the humongous Space Center Houston reverb cavern. Joe and Alma Gonzalez were both there and looking better than ever. Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack also provided live music (of the Cajun flavor) going along well with one of the finer gumbo offerings of the evening. It was great seeing Bakkhus Taverna Greek Restaurant & Bar back at the huge event and eyeballing the long line they had, many were glad to see them back. Opus Bistro did something new to go along with their ever-popular beef loin, bringing along their new sister eatery, Opus Ocean Grill, to the event. One of my favorite places for pizza is Midnight Slice in Old Seabrook. The past year, they added a HUGE pizza oven allowing them to expand their menu with some really outstanding eats and a capacity to cook up bodacious quantities, ample for an Epicurean Evening, baseball teams, parties and the like – A great place for late night pizza fix. - Continued on Page 36

Texas Reggae Favorites InDaSkies Release First EP By Sarah Piña By now, the name InDaSkies is familiar to many as a staple on the local music scene for the past five years. The group of friends, who began playing for fun in a garage back in 2012, continue to grow in popularity with their distinct brand of experimental reggae.

UFO / Saxon Thurs., March 9

The current lineup of Joe Serrato (guitar/vocals), Steve McDonald (drums), Mike Heilman (EFX/bass on keys), Kristen Heilman (keys/vocals) and Derrick Rosette (saxophone), have continued to witness an expanding fan base with their self-described “loco music,” which derives influence from several genres of music.

SCOUT BAR

“I have a hip hop background, and back in the day when I was growing up, I used to rap on two turn UPCOMING SHOWS tables and a microphone. I’d release little mix tapes, and it went all over Dickinson,” Serrato laughed. “And Steve for example has a ska background. He used to play in a skapunk band in Missouri, and once opened for Reel Big Fish,” Tuesday, March 21 he added.

@ Scout Bar (Webster) EP Release Show with Katchafire, Innavision The High Mile

Friday, March 24 @ Fatty’s (Seabrook) Friday Reggae Party with Formative Fire Saltwater Slide

These influences, plus the mission of the band to bring people together, ultimately determined their musical direction that continues to grow and develop.

Blaggards Fri., March 10 T-BONE TOM’S

“We wanted to spread unity with the music, and so we asked ourselves, ‘How can we do that?’ Reggae music is like that, so we decided to vibe that out and see what happens. Eventually what it turned into is really experimental, alternative music with a lot of reggae influence,” Serrato said. And that unique style has proven to be a success—InDaSkies will officially release their first EP at Scout Bar on March 21.

Tickets On Sale: Friday, March 3 @ 10 am Actor and Houston-native Dennis Quaid will visit Clear Lake with his band “The Sharks” for a special May 16 performance at Scout Bar. Although better known as an actor, Quaid has been performing with his band since 2000. “The audiences have a blast, which is all we want,” Quaid, who is lead singer and plays rythm guitar explained. “I make a complete and utter fool of myself. I think that's the only way to have fun onstage, instead of trying to pretend to be cool and all the rest of that stuff."
