Let’s Groove! That 70’s Thing By Sarah Piña Around three years ago, a recently formed 70s and groove band played to an early afternoon, scant crowd on the 4th of July in Kingwood. “It was 3 in the afternoon, it was hot, and we were one of the opening acts to the main band,” Joe Cavazos, bassist of That 70’s Thing recalled.
The Blaggards Sat., April 15 CABO
That show was enough to get the attention of several booking agents, however, and the group found themselves playing gig after gig in the year to follow. “That year, we ended up playing several shows, including regular gigs at TBone Tom’s and Jackie’s Brickhouse. By the time the next 4th of July show rolled around, we were back as the main act, playing to 5,000 people, and even had a horn section and go-go dancers for that huge show,” Cavazos said.
Rat Ranch
That 70’s Thing (whose “name was only meant as a placeholder when we started getting booked, and it just stuck,” Cavazos laughed), is now one of Clear Lake’s most popular bands, and regularly plays to crowds in the area as well as different parts of Houston. Their current lineup includes Pamela Saxon King (lead vocals), Chris Neman (guitars), Todd Fulks (drums), Mike McCulloch (keyboards and vocals), and Cavazos (bass and keyboards).

Classic Café: Welcoming neighborhood restaurant & bar serving breakfast, lunch & dinner announces sister night club coming soon By Sarah Piña
“Our bar is a very local, welcoming neighborhood bar, and we have some great drinks that we’re famous for – because either they were created here, or because you can’t get them anywhere else in the area,” said owner Brad Emel. “The Club Special, for example, is a refreshing margarita-like beverage (without tequila), made with vodka, equal parts sweet and sour and soda, and a splash of tonic with a salted rim. It evolved in country clubs, and golfers would drink after their rounds after being out in the sun,” he said, adding that because of the surrounding water community, sailors especially love the Club Special after sailing races on Wednesday evenings.
Although Classic Café has grown to be an area “classic” since it first opened its doors in 1985, the Seabrook staple continues to serve up exciting new eats and drinks, showing just why they have been in business for over three decades.
Another popular drink unique to the Classic Café is The Iceberg, where champagne is added to a frozen screwdriver, creating an iceberg effect.
One beloved aspect, which has remained a definitive place in the café, is what was referred to as the Back Door Bar in the ’80s and ’90s. The bar currently features drinks invented at the Classic Café, and will soon expand their happy hour and late-night menu.

“It’s like a mimosa on steroids! We invented that, so when we become famous for it, you’ll know where it came from,” Emel said. The bar also features a variety of craft draft beers, other specialty cocktails, and wines – including an unoaked chardonnay, which Emel noted is aged in stainless steel barrels instead of oak, creating a tannin-free wine that in turn is less likely to cause headaches. - Continued on Page 44

That 70’s Thing: Continued From Page 48 Though many grew up performing and playing music – Cavazos himself is a classically trained pianist – most all members have some connection with NASA when they’re not laying down funky grooves at area bars and clubs. “We’re trying to hide the fact that we’re actually professional nerds,” Cavazos joked, noting that Pamela’s talent extends beyond the area. “She has performed previously on Broadway and at Madison Square Garden,” he said. This performing experience has influenced the band’s presentation as well. “We started dressing up for shows, and Pam coming from Broadway really pushed for that. The crowds loved it, and now many people who attend our shows dress up as well, in everything from large mustaches to psychedelic pants!” Cavazos said. So what can someone expect if they’ve never attended a That 70s Thing show? “Expect nothing but a fun time with crazy attire, and enjoy some cool, happy funk groove disco music!” That 70s Thing is performing at T-Bone Tom’s in Kemah on April 8 at 7 p.m. For upcoming events, or to book the band at your next big event, make sure to visit their Facebook page or www.that70s-thing.com. ----------------------------------------------------
Galveston Bay Songwriter’s Festival: Continued From Page 48 The festival will begin on Thursday, September 28, with special tribute to Texas songwriting icon Guy Clark, followed by performances throughout the weekend by the festival’s headliners: David Lee Murphy, and Texas native Radney Foster. Murphy is perhaps known for his hit “Dust on the Bottle,” and has collaborated with other country greats such as Kenny Chesney, while Foster has made a name for himself in the music industry as a performer and songwriter whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Sara Evans, Keith Urban, and Gary Allan. The events will take place at various locations in the area, including Cabo in Seabrook and T-Bone Tom’s in Kemah. Headliners were announced in March, with tickets going on sale starting April 8. “It’s been really great to partner with all of the wonderful local businesses in the area for this event,” said Burns. “We anticipate attendance from all over the Gulf Coast, and hope that this develops into a destination songwriting festival.” Tickets are $35 for reserved seats and $20 for general admission on a per-show basis. A limited number of all-inclusive VIP tickets will be available. Additionally, songwriters of similar genres (Americana, country, trop-rock, roots rock, and more) who are interested in participating in the festival may still submit their material at this time. Rules and requirements for submission, as well as ticketing information, may be found at galvestonbaysongwriters.com. Further updates will also be available on the Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival Facebook page.

The new happy hour has also been extended, with some fun new changes. “Happy hour is now from 4 to 9 p.m., and we are planning a ‘second happy hour’ from midnight from 1 a.m.,” Emel said. As a compliment to the happy hour, an upcoming late-night gastropub menu will be available and feature new items, such as Korean fried chicken and banh mi sandwiches, and the “cheeseburger of the week.” Meanwhile, the full menu of the café itself has also incorporated some new entrées, including fresh grilled red fish, lox and bagels, black and bleu ahi tuna, Emel noted. The Classic Café-related breaking bar news doesn’t end there, though – for the many wondering about the location formerly known as the Turtle Club, Emel recently acquired it and is planning on an early summer opening date. “We’re going to call it Barge 295. Many don’t know this, but on the hull, it is welded ‘barge 295’ because when the company Brown & Root made it, it was the 295th barge created,” he said. “We’re aiming to be open by June 1.” In the meantime, there are plenty of refreshing drinks exclusive to Classic Café to be had at the “Back Door Bar,” along with some great new food menu items! Be sure to visit their Facebook page or website at www.seabrookclassiccafe.com for all the latest happy hour times, specials, and upcoming changes!

BRENNA How long have you been a bartender + How long at TOPWATER GRILL: I have been at Topwater now for 4 years, going on 5; and have been in the food and beverage industry since I was 16 years old. Without telling my age I think my first bartending job came when I was 22 at a tavern in Parkersburg, WV. What do you love about working at TOPWATER? I love everything about Topwater, mostly the people. It is such a great family atmosphere with the best view. I probably have 500 pelican pictures on my phone. YOUR favorite day of the week to work at TOPWATER & why? My favorite day would be Monday nights since I have worked that day since I was first hired. Plus we have half-priced oysters, so its always a busy night. Top 3 drinks & food you recommend to customers at TOPWATER? The top 3 drinks would be our Tito’s mojito, drunken parrot and the Topwater margarita. The dish I always recommend is the Grilled Snapper with three grilled shrimp with the addition of jumbo lump crabmeat. The royal reds are fantastic, too, and I recommend them as a starter. Do you have a Signature drink? My signature would be the Cosmopolitan. I worked for 3 years at a hotel where all we made was martinis. I think the most I've ever made in one night was 150.

(LOL) I should have a PhD by now if I got credit for life experience. I also love the hill country and try to get there as much as I can, it reminds me a lot of my home state of West Virginia. I think I made it 15 times last summer! The most rewarding part of your job? The smile on my customers’ faces. Someone could be having the worst day, but after some time at our bar, they leave with a smile on their face, because we genuinely care about our customers. 4 words that describe you: Awesome, Charismatic , Loyal , Fun-loving (These are all according to my best friend.)

Growth continued for Small & Independent Craft Breweries in 2016
The Brewers Association (BA) recently released 2016 data on U.S. craft brewing growth. With more than 5,300 breweries operating during the year, small and independent craft brewers represent 12.3 percent market share by volume of the overall beer industry.

In 2016, craft brewers produced 24.6 million barrels, and saw a 6 percent rise in volume on a comparable base and a 10 percent increase in retail dollar value. Retail dollar value was estimated at $23.5 billion, representing 21.9 percent market share. By adding 1.4 million barrels, craft brewer growth outpaced the 1.2 million barrels lost from the craft segment, based on purchases by large brewing companies. Microbreweries and brewpubs delivered 90 percent of the craft brewer growth. “Small and independent brewers are operating in a new brewing reality still filled with opportunity, but within a much more competitive landscape,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “As the overall beer market remains static and the large global brewers lose volume, their strategy has been to focus on acquiring craft brewers. This has been a catalyst for slower growth for small and independent brewers and endangered consumer access to certain brands. Small and independent brewers were able to fill in the barrels lost to acquisitions and show steady growth but at a rate more reflective of today’s industry dynamics. The average brewer is getting smaller and growth is more diffuse within the craft category, with producers at the tail helping to drive growth for the overall segment.” Craft breweries provided nearly 129,000 jobs in 2016, an increase of almost 7,000 from the previous year.

Loose Notes by Andy Eng
AN AMAZING KIND OF GRACE - Last year was my first introduction into a world where speed, agility, grace, punch and teamwork was the mantra - Roller Derby! In March, I attended the season opening games for the South Side Roller Derby held at the Pasadena Fairgrounds. Much like our home professional baseball team, off-season is a time for tune-ups to the roster and it was cool catching all that’s new this season.
Between games, the folks from the Clear Lake School of Rock lit up the arena peeling off Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4,” a song I’m guessing I’ve not heard played out live in 40-plus years. Looking back, I’ve been finding out that the instructors at this school are noted gigging musicians in the Clear Lake area and the performances by their students reflect such. It’s three months into the New Year and looking good already.

In March, I got to cover another type of an amazing kind of grace, the Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre, performance of Pasion. Looking over their program, this is one well-supported organization, yet I was mused not recognizing a single name in the program on my Facebook friends list. This is truly new turf for me and from my upper deck location in the control room, I got to use my long lens (normally used for bird watching) – extremely new turf. - Continued on Page 36

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 37
The entire company, from Apprentice, Soloists, Corps, and Artists presented impressively strong performances, which were very well arranged and appreciated. The program lineup was perfect for the spring fever season and included Strings of Romance, Le Jazz Hot, Le Corsaire, Gopak, Apprassionato, Bolero, and Carmen. I would like to encourage all of you good readers out there who have not partaken of the local ballet to give it a whirl – The Bay Area Houston Ballet. It’s a new year. Try something new! SPRING BREAK 2017 - Started with rain, lots of rain. Driving south on the 146 bridge, the traffic line turning into the Boardwalk was essentially nonexistent, a big surprise and likely due to the rain. Turns out the party had already started, having moved inside to T-Bone Tom’s with a packed palapa patio full of diners, partiers, and Rat Ranch on the Landshark Stage. Brilliant!!!
and Mick Jagger always had a way of bringing out the “frenzy” in an audience; and in a similar fun way, so does Rat Ranch. This group’s local reputation as a strong cover band is well-known, and in my opinion, their original pieces are even stronger. In the prior century, I can easily picture Rat Ranch signed to a major label with their Texas Country music playing on the airwaves. Listeners can score free downloads of all their originals at www.ratranch.com We had such a fun time there that night, we went back to the patio again later in March to catch Andy and The Dreamsicles.
The band hasn’t been playing in the Clear Lake area much lately with the closing of Sherlock’s Bay Area and the audience that evening was truly ready for their Rat Ranch fix. In the prior century, Little Richard - Continued on Page 35

lots of intelligence as the finishing touches were still being installed when we got there. Scout Bar regulars are well aware of their crisp service and will find such here.
This time was different as school was back in session and with the student crowd safely back to their book in college town, the place was packed with empty nesters of all ages with the funnest band in the land. Original lead singer, Bill Samson, was out. We wish him the best and a speedy recovery. Sitting in for Bill was Harold Gill, a popular voice out on the SCENE. The Dreamsicles showed off their talent with Harold. The set we heard included many songs that Harold brought along, which I’ve never heard the band play – Sweet! A band with four vocalists able to carry a song - not bad! <vbgrin> IRISH FOR THE DAY and ARENA ROCK ANTHEMS - Thumbing through my trusty copy of The SCENE on what to do on St. Patrick’s Day (always keep a copy handy at work, in your car, by the TV), it was clear that an evening of bar hopping was the order of the day. Our first stop was at the new Pub Level and started the night off with Irish Car Bombs. The core make-over of the what used to be Doc’s Upper Deck and before that, Rock Neutney’s was total, down to the concrete foundation. Functionally, the layout of this new place shows

Going along with the totally fresh update was The Jay Walkers dialing in the courtyard natural reverb perfectly and serenading the patio diners as the egrets were returning from a day of fishing. This is a place has lots of different slants to offer patrons and has a great feel about it. We will no doubt be frequenting here again down the road.
Down in San Leon, we checked out the Irish festivities happening at Railean Distillery. Despite its rich pirate tradition, the Irish were out in full force with green galore, and I happily recommend both of my samples that evening, the Green Parrot and the Walk The Plank. Railean Distillery is one of our places on the SCENE I’ve no trouble with recommending to anybody at anytime, a place I’ve personally declared as the friendliest place on the planet. - Continued on Page 34

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35 Heading west, we rolled into Hugh & Jeff’s for a night of green beer and to catch up with Roxx Kraven and Victim. Line up changes swapped the order that evening forcing us to miss out on catching Roxx Kraven. A follow up is in order. Victim was our surprise find at last Fall’s Texas Classic Rockin Food Truck Rally at Greyhound Park and the show on St. Patrick’s night was one of their first shows they performed on this side of town. Perhaps more impressive than these guys having been at it since 1991 is that they’ve still got the enthusiastic fan base wherever they go. I like the way these guys prepare for a show as their rituals make it clear they intend to give it their all.
We misjudged our schedule on St. Patrick’s Day and were unable to stop by many other spots we had on the list, but we’ll catch you next year. However, before calling it a day, I did manage to make a quick stop into the newly relocated Scotty’s Pub on the Bay, the spot that had originally been La Dolce Vino. This place was PACKED with spring breakers and Irish partiers. Scotty and his team were in top form, handling patrons on this busy evening and have done even better moving from their previous location on the other side of the complex. This is Scotty’s second location; the original bar restaurant is on Scarsdale. Personalities of the patrons at each of these locations are noticeably different, and I’ll be looking forward to seeing how the newest Scotty’s location shapes up in the months ahead.
Victim’s Facebook page describes their style of music as Hard Rock, which in my opinion, undersells their true strength as a full force band of the Arena Rock genre with a set list dominantly loaded with classic Rock Anthems rarely heard – likely drawn from their experience playing with nationwide acts including Blue Oyster Cult, Ronnie Jame Dio, Testament, Megadeth, Cheap Trick, Kansas, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Three Dog Night, Grand Funk Railroad, Marshall Tucker Band and many more.
TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE - Lots of great national acts have been happening at Scout Bar. In March, I opted to try out some of the international Scene when Katchafire came into town. Hailing from New Zealand, this band had a great local turnout having recently appeared at a Reggae festival in California.
The small live music room at Hugh & Jeff’s had a difficult time handling the energy and force of Victim – as if The Who were in town performing a series of full electric house concerts. Victim is now on my official watch list for the Clear Lake area - Put them on yours.

Katchafire @ Scout Bar
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 34 A fun evening was clearly on the minds of many. Personally, I found this group to be a delightfully bright and refreshing blend of fusion funk wrapped around a reggae core. Desi Arnez would’ve liked this band and for now, the Katchafire show is sitting in the “funnest show of the year” position. Opening the night included Clear Lake’s own Indaskies along with the release of their new five song EP “Essential Vibrations” (a great album name, in my opinion) available on iTunes. You can catch Sara Piña’s in depth write-up on Indaskies online in the March issue of the SCENE. Good stuff! JOE PALERMO MEMORIAL - The weather for the event was perfect with showers and downpours throughout the day putting a clamp on any crazy idea of working in the yard. Turnout was very far reaching coming in all the way from Huntsville, Magnolia,
Katy and San Antonio. Joe Palmero played in so many bands, not all of them got to perform at the earlier benefit so at this go ’round - This day started off where the benefit left off with Six Gun Keys setting things off with a blistering pace with the magic moment dial turned to max. The Peace Makers was an enjoyable insight into Joe’s venture into the Country & Western Genre. Rock Republic, who gave up much of their show time at the benefit, finally got their chance to present themselves to the masses. This group has a super talented line up and hopefully will start appearing more

around town. I’m positive that there are more bands that Joe had played with that weren’t able to squeeze into the line up. Our loss…. The closing set was an interesting new project that formed last year, Judgement Day: A Tribute to Whitesnake, featuring the vocals of front man Tom Calandra, a family man from Louisiana who we caught for the first time at the Texas Classic Rockin’ Food Truck Rally at Greyhound park. Back then he was triggering flashbacks with Escape: A Journey Tribute band with similar results, massive female swooning. Cool! Joining Calandra was, Scott Misner (everybody’s drummer), Rick Flores (Keyboard) Chris Kotlarz & Dale Rasco (Guitar), and Shane DuBose (Bass) This time around, we were unable to drink the place dry. Kudos to the folks at Fatty’s, I’m sure word will start getting around how this place supported the Palermo family. If your band is of the classic rock variety, and you’re needing your sound to come off BIG, Danny Divar is one you should consider hiring (you can find him on FB). A shout out to Chris Loper for roping things together and the huge cast of supporters, the “great loud” turnout of friends, family & musicians - ’twas a magical afternoon indeed. - Continued on Page 32

.38 Special... My third and perhaps most important reason to catch Potroast again.
DUELING KITS - Early in my tenure of covering live music for the SCENE, Andy Upchurch offered me some really good advice, “Always watch for the two piece groups. They’ve gotta be strong as there’s little to cover mistakes,” - Words that have held true over the years with the likes of Wood & Wind, Southbound, and Grifters & Shills. Taking this concept further, dual lead vocals carry similar strengths such as the Wilson brothers of The Hunger who ditched taking turns on the lead mic and now providing continual front duty assault well into Force Of Nature levels. Dual lead guitars are cool too with interesting melodic back and forths throughout the show. Local dual lead guitars coming to mind include the likes of Mark May/Paul Ramirez, Don Eisle/Steve Shannon and Randy Hughes/Curtis Beinhorn. In March, I was delighted to catch a local band with dual drummers on the kit when Randy Wall brought Potroast to Katie’s. Joining Wall was a fabulous lead guitarist, Guilherme Fonseca (whose mind likely thinks in 1/64th notes), bus driver Jimb Jackson on bass, Andrew Saad on Sax/vocals and the duo of Brian Scardino and Randy Woodard on drums. Pat Brink and Jordon Wright are also listed on the lineup and weren’t there which is fantastic because now I’m looking forward to catching Potroast again. According to the band, “Potroast is an eclectic group of musicians that play a very eclectic mix of musical styles. Potroast blends elements of a wide variety of genres, including funk, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, folk, country, jazz, blues, Reggae and pop focusing on musical improvisation, extended jams, and a blending of musical genres…. with a fan base that likes to dance and hula-hoop.” I missed the hulahooping that evening and with delight, looking forward to another reason to catch Potroast again. Aside from the exceptionally strong performance from Wall, Fonseca Saad & Jackson, the dual drummers gave the music a life and heart beat not often heard of live on the local SCENE – Think Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Santana &
THE SCENE
Local musician Andy Upchurch and his wife Vicki were there too that evening. Andy relayed to me, “These cats are good! Lots of energy, great song selection, great musicians…. I'll never know how the bandleader talked the band into 2 sets a night. Most bands play 4 sets in 4 hours. I saw their Facebook post, looked them up, they looked good. I’d never heard of them before.” Same here!!! Pick a night, any night, Katie's has the band. Pick a complex ’70s hit, any hit, Potroast can cook it up with a live music energy often better than what you may recall hearing on the old FM dial. Put Potroast and Katie’s on your anytime and anywhere good-to-go-list.

Benefit for Reuben @ Scout Bar
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 32 BRING REUBEN BACK - There’s always lots of good things happening out and about on the SCENE. One of my favorites is the special events to support a worthy cause and even better, those gatherings for musicians and those in the service industry, where the gathering often ventures into the realm of inspired magical moments. In March, we had one of those moments when the rock metal community came together to support Reuben Foster, Sound Meister at Scout Bar. Headlining the music this evening was a special reunion performance by local award winning Born from Ruins and included performances from Driven With Insanity, ORR, Erase the Virus, and Blood of an Outlaw. Khris Harding provided Master of Ceremony duties fittingly well for the heavy metal crowd. Blood of an Outlaw was a new band for me. They were wrapping up when I arrived so we’ll follow up with them later down the road. Erase The Virus is very well known in these parts. The surprise for me this evening was getting a chance to chat with ETV guitarist, Jeff Smith, who has rejoined the band. Drive With Insanity and ORR are two local sizzling acts that have come up through the ranks through the Punkstar Full Throttle doors, both working on recording new material, and both performing well into the zone. I was also really impressed with DWI’s street team who were doing a fantastic job reaching out to new fans. Tis good seeing new bands making it happen. “Over the Top” mention goes to the return of Born From Ruins for this event. It was clear that this multiple Buzz Award winning band still knows how to start up the mosh pit. Musically, BFR demonstrated their music mastery using the entire dynamic range volume and tempo while still sporting a loyal fan base that never really left - All in all, evidence that their songs & shows were not only “award winning” but their music has withstood the time test.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 31 MUSIC TEACHERS AND BELLY DANCING – One music act I’ve a soft spot for are the live music shows presented by teachers. Months ago, I had the chance to do that when Almost Famous, a throwdown band of teachers at the local School of Rock were playing late at Scout Bar following a PunkStar Full Throttle webcast. In March, I got to catch Almost Famous members Michael McColloch & Stacie Mathis perform a two-piece show at Mediterraneo Market and Cafe. Magdy and Sonia Kolb really know how to entertain their customers as we arrived in time for an enjoyable belly dance presentation from Kasandra. My hunch watching the reactions from the VIPs (A.K.A. little folks) is that more than several will have belly dancing on their list of electives when they get older. The dinner crowd enjoyed McColloch’s strengths on the out front robust keyboard and Mathis’ vocals reaching Ann Wilson level strength. A cool song the two pulled off was the ballad from Billy Joel’s “Scenes
From an Italian Restaurant” fitting perfectly with the dolmas, souvlaki, paella valenciana, and house reds. Mediterraneo Market and Cafe - One of my favorite mom and pop neighborhood restaurants that has a worldly neighborhood atmosphere. IT’S A WRAP - Our professional baseball team is getting ready for the new season and our hometown basketball team is looking stronger compared to recent past seasons. The crawfish I’ve been spotting are huge this year and patio season is officially upon us! Keeping a measuring stick on where we sit, years ago when the local setbacks from aerospace and the energies ran their course, a friend on the SCENE shared with me “The place will come back and those who stuck it out and made their moves while it’s down, will be in position when everybody comes back.” In months prior, we mentioned the departures of two popular places, Sherlocks & The Turtle Club. This month, her words held true seeing the expansions taking place at Scout Bar and their new Pub Level along with the newly relocated Scotty’s Pub on the Bay joining the many fine venues we have locally for dining, spirits and live music here in our place, we call The SCENE. We caught several over-the-top musical acts in March and expect nothing less in April. By the time you read this, it will be the perfect time to take advantage of our best time of year here. Thanks for sharing all of your stories in March, get your chores done, and we’ll see you in April, out on The SCENE!

Weekends on the Water
The Boat Yard: Helping get everyone on the water As the boating season swings into high gear in Clear Lake, it is time to start thinking about making sure your boat is in top shape to hit the water. Or maybe you don’t yet own a boat, but have been thinking about it. In either case, no need look no further than The Boat Yard for affordable boats and boat specialists who can take care of all the above. The Boat Yard, which opened its Kemah location last summer, has a staff with more than 20 years of combined experience in boat repairs and more. All are certified Tohatsu technicians and are ready to assist with any boat-related need, or help you pick out your new vessel. “We do total maintenance on engines, monthly routine checkups, and even have a team just for big fiberglass jobs. We can assist with anything from structural damage to cosmetic damage,” said Chet Morampudi, General Manager of The Boat Yard. “Last year we started selling a Piranha boats, which are shallow-water fishing boats. We are the only dealer from Louisiana to Brownsville that sells them, so we are really one-ofa-kind,” he added. “They are very affordable, too. Our goal and what we really want is to see everyone on the water.” And when it comes to seeing “everyone on the water,” The Boat Yard truly follows through in every regard, specifically boat education. “We like to educate people, and offer at least one seminar a month on a weekend. We have a variety of classes, such as navigation. Even if you have been boating other places for ages, you may not be familiar with the ship channel lights or what certain lights are, so it’s very important,” Morampudi said, adding that they will be offering three seminars, including one class specifically for women (Ladies on the Water) at the Southwest International Boat Show in South Shore Harbour on April 9. The Boat Yard is also very involved in the community, and frequently participates in charity benefits, such as the recent CureFest benefitting brain cancer research. Additionally, they will have their 5th annual crawfish boil on Saturday, April 29 from noon to 5 p.m., which will be a great opportunity to see everything the shop has to offer first-hand. “Every year we do an annual crawfish boil in the spring,
and a fish fry in the fall. Last year we cooked 280 pounds of crawfish and over 12 dozen crabs! It is free and absolutely anyone is welcome (RSVP to info@eaglesboatyard.com to join us at the boil),” Morampudi said. So whether some routine boat maintenance is required, a new boat is on the horizon, or you are looking to educate yourself further about these topics, The Boat Yard has you covered! They are located at 1145 FM 518 in Kemah and can be reached at 281-334-3300 or visit eaglesboatyard.com. APRIL 2017
WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACES START 39TH SEASON You don’t need to know the difference between the “main” and the “jib” to enjoy and appreciate the Bay Area’s most beautiful spectator sport, sailing. Few places anywhere have the kind of sailing community that is found in the Bay Area. This area is home to competitive sailing programs and races run by a number of yacht clubs and local sailing associations. For anyone who loves to sail, who could ask for a better place to live or visit than the Bay Area? But sailing is also a fabulous spectator sport, and our area offers residents and visitors the rare opportunity to enjoy the impressive sight of sailing up-close and personal during the Wednesday Night Races on Clear Lake. A month of sailing seminars has concluded and the Opening Party/Skippers Meeting is in the books. The 39th season kicks off on Wednesday, April 5. The organizing body is the Clear Lake Racing Association, an informal association of sailing enthusiasts from all the sailing clubs around the Houston/Galveston Bay area. During the months of April to October (during Daylight Savings Time), there is enough light left over in the day to get off work, and head for the docks to launch boats and get in a sailboat race. The Wednesday Night Races are a wonderful mid-week break, and the short distances between marks provide a great venue to sharpen boat and sail-handling skills. The best spectator outpost and official host venue is Villa Capri in Seabrook where a crowd gathers to watch the races and listen to the commentary from the race announcer. After the race, all the sailors gather at Villa Capri Restaurant to join the spectators for food and drinks and the trophy presentation. There are Wednesday Night Sailboat Races held all over the country, but those held in Clear Lake are unique because many of the marks are placed close to spectator viewing locations. So close, in fact, the spectators get a really good look at the teamwork required to get the jib up and douse the spinnaker. Yacht races are not known as a spectator sport, but when they are viewed in the comfort and proximity of a convenient dock (instead of the middle of a large body of water), it can be quite entertaining and is an event to check out at least once if not weekly. These races began locally in the late ‘70s Wednesday Night Sailboat and have evolved. Major changes continued from the 2016 season include that the number of Races on Clear Lake races have been cut down, and there will be no season ending championship series. One other major change will be a bye week (week of no racing) between each series. Villa Capri: 3713 NASA PKWY (Seabrook) *6:15pm 1st Gun

FONTAINE OF BEAUTY

SC
Featured Artist: Fontaine Jacobs
By Kelley Dawson
“When you survive cancer, you feel you have been given a second chance, and I have the need to give back,” proclaimed local artist Fontaine Jacobs. This year will mark her sixth year as a breast cancer survivor. Jacobs told of her love of portraits. She aspired to create a cancer portrait series for which she has painted several people who have or had cancer. “My plan is to show each painting for two years and then donate the portrait to the survivor or the family of those who don’t win the fight,” stated Jacobs. She said, “It lets me paint and portraits don’t sell very well.” Jacobs mentioned she’s doesn’t know why she likes to paint people so much. She tried to explain, “When I see a person I see all their colors, the shadows, shapes, images. I am a very visual person.” Jacobs entered three of the portraits in the upcoming May Galveston Art Walk. People are not Jacobs’ only inspiration. She is inspired by the world around her and her travels. “I look around and want to paint all the beautiful things,” expressed Jacobs. She also paints abstracts and what she refers to as “impressionist realism” – a cross between the two styles. Jacobs applies a variety of mediums as well, including acrylics, oils, and watercolors. Her well-balanced mix of techniques produces exceptional pieces. Jacobs paintings invoke the emotions within them. The phenomenal values of the artist’s works cause the viewer to surrender into the depths of remarkable tones and colors. Jacobs shared, “When I paint in acrylic and oils, its impressionist realism and more realism in oil. With watercolor I feel I paint in a more abstract nature.” Jacobs admitted she has been told to settle down and stay with one style. She added, “But, that doesn’t sound like fun.” Creating with watercolor, Jacobs revealed she allows the paint to direct itself by pushing the it around until she sees something. She will share her artistic talents while teaching acrylic and watercolor on yupo classes to 50-year-olds and older at the College of the Mainland starting in June. Yupo is a slick paper Jacobs highly regards for its nice lifting abilities. “I like to try different things, whatever strikes me and challenge myself,” informed Jacobs. She paints every day for at least two hours though she confessed two hours can become eight hours. “I often say I’m possessed by a painting and can’t stop,” said Jacobs. She affirmed painting centers her. “You lose yourself in it all when you’re painting. A bad day? I feel better after I paint. Even aches and pains – I won’t feel it while I’m painting,” advised Jacobs. Those who gaze at Jacobs paintings can become lost the same way. It’s no wonder she has shown in galleries for over 20 years and won several awards for her commercial and fine art throughout the United States. To view additional artist’s works visit www.fontainefineart.com or call 832-474-2882. Jacobs will be showing at Texas City Art Festival April 8 and the Galveston Art League Walk May 6. (Event details can be found in the Arts Section.) She also has several pieces on display at The House of Tea in Kemah. Fontaine donates a portion of her proceeds to breast cancer research each year.

NOAH’S ARK: Continued From Page 9 Breakfast with a view: Bring your whole crew and let Noah’s handle breakfast for you, served fresh seven days a week, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. On the weekends, (Saturday 8am - Noon and Sunday 8am - 1pm) enjoy their breakfast buffet complete with a made-to-order omelet and egg station. Arrive thirsty, because Bloody Marys, Screwdrivers and Mimosas are $3 each from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and all day Sunday. I can’t speak for your view, but the waterfront view at Noah’s beats my kitchen view any day. 21 & up only upstairs: Located on the second floor, the Ark has a gigantic (3,800 square-foot) covered rooftop palapa bar and restaurant for 21 and up only. The beautifully furnished, Belize-inspired, open-air palapa bar is affectionately referred to as the “Parrots Nest.” Take a seat at the bar or find a table with tikistyle barstools, then sit back and take it in – there’s a waterfront view from EVERY seat. Enjoy live entertainment Friday and Saturday nights. As you soak in the atmosphere, their slogan comes to life: “Your island paradise just minutes from home.” Tolhurst said, “De-stress, breathe in the tropical atmosphere, taste the light spray of saltwater on your lips, sip a cool drink, slide down a fresh oyster, and know you’ve made it to paradise!” Family-friendly downstairs: Inside this Ark-inspired building, find a warm, inviting Noah’s Ark-themed interior where kids and the young-at-heart will be delighted by the numerous Noah’s Ark references they’ll find. Whether it be the giant wall mural, the figurines in the custom shelving unit, or names on the menu, the Ark theme runs throughout. Their three downstairs waterfront patios aren’t just family friendly, but pet-friendly also. Four-legged family members are always welcome, but Noah’s (like most establishments) requests that they must be on a leash. Hassle-free parking: Any day of the week, find plenty of parking on-site, or worst case, park a half block away in a nearby designated lot. Motorcycle-friendly parking is also available in front of the restaurant. Free parking seven days a week. - Continued on Page 14
