Andy and the Dreamsicles By Sarah Piña Andy and the Dreamsicles have become a staple on the local Clear Lake music scene since they joined forces a little over seven years ago. Their mix of ’50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s music, as well as their specialty of ‘70s classic rock, has earned them a huge following in the area. What fans may not know, however, is the curious way they got their start.

Founding member and keyboardist of the band Andy Upchurch – who is also a published writer of the book The Oleanders of San Leon (available on Amazon.com) – had the idea to start a band in the Seabrook/Kemah area one summer several years ago. After connecting with a local restaurant, he booked his first gig – without even having the band in place! Though Upchurch briefly met with a singer for some practice beforehand, the band that became Andy and the Dreamsicles was formed in the span of a week. Unbelievably, all met for the first time at their first gig! “The first singer was Bill Sansom, who is still our singer today,” Upchurch said. The band quickly became a local favorite, booking several gigs over the course of that summer. “And since that time, we’ve made many, many good fans and friends,” he added.

Along with Sansom and Upchurch, current members (all of whom sing as well) include Randy Hughes (guitar); Jeff Hoke (drums); Don Bonner (vocals and saxophone); Jack Pitcock (trombone); and Jonathan Starnes, lead trumpet of their large horn section they include for bigger shows. Initially, horns weren’t part of the plan, however.

Actor and Houston-native Dennis Quaid will visit Clear Lake with his band “The Sharks” for a special May 16 performance at Scout Bar. Although better known as an actor, Quaid has been performing with his band since 2000.

7th Red Cat Jazz Festival relocates to Mall of the Mainland, May 26-28 The 7th Annual Red Cat Jazz Festival, presented by the Red Cat Jazz Preservation Society, promises a unique cultural experience, on Memorial Day weekend. This year’s event takes place on the grounds of Mall of the Mainland in Texas City, Thursday, May 25 - Sunday, May 28. Festival founder, Sam Pink announces the lineup he has curated saying, “Expect performances by some of the biggest names in jazz, including Grammy Award winners Kirk Whalum, Jeff Lorber Trio, and Maurice ‘Mobetta’ Brown, the legendary Ronnie Laws, the First Lady of the Red Cat Music Group Althea Rene; Mike Phillips has played the national anthem for the NFC championship and other major sporting events, soulful funk saxophonist Marion Meadows, Elan Trotman, Theresa Grayson, Cindy Bradley and rounding out the stellar event will be LaLa Wilson, Joey Sommerville, Michael Ward and a new rising star in the jazz world, Mike Hamilton.” Last year’s festival took place at Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas, during Mother’s Day weekend. Addressing the goal of expanding its boarders, this year the festival is in Texas City. Mayor Matt Doyle called the Red Cat Jazz Festival a welcome addition to other festivals already in the city. “We’re very excited about having another festival in Texas City, especially at Mall of the Mainland,” Doyle said. “Most of our festivals are on the water, so we’re happy to have an inland festival to add to the mix.” What is the Red Cat Jazz Festival? The Red Cat Jazz Festival is a 4-day cultural affair, in which musicians, cooks and craftspeople welcome thousands of visitors each year. REELING IN THE YEARS - We went off-grid in April to sit on the patio at Dunn Brothers Coffee and enjoyed an afternoon of Bad Sneakers, a talented and multifaceted group of friends and musicians that have come together to celebrate and perform the popular and obscure tunes of the famous band, Steely Dan. The sets we were able to catch that beautiful Sunday afternoon were packed with nothing but the greatest hits and this band nailed it. Not too many cities in this country can sport having a Steely Dan tribute band. We got ourselves a good one here. Chatting with the band members, it appears Thursdays are the best nights to book this band as many of the members of this 10-plus piece group are members of other area bands and frequently gigging on the weekends. I’m thinking T-Bone Tom’s would be a perfect venue for some Bad Sneakers. - Continued on Page 38

SPRING FEVER - Is one of my most favorite of illnesses to succumb to – and one of the best reminders there is that it’s “that time of year” again is the Annual ’60s Hippy Party with Hourglass at the Seagull. The conscientious events of the ’60s despite the turmoil of the day, were major league epic with a lasting influence still. Oh yeah, and the music was really good back then, too. I played a lot of music from that day to my kids for their lullabies! Since it’s difficult these days to get time to stand still, yet trying always to best reckon where we are heading, it’s always a good idea to occasionally take a look back from where we came. The Annual ’60s Hippie Party at the Cock-eyed Seagull is a super fun way to get that perspective. Cheers!
NEW STOP ON THE BEAT - And that would be Vollie Ray’s Circus, a nifty neighborhood bar that’s easy to get too just off I-45, with lots of local live music, bridging musicians from throughout the Pasadena, Deer Park, Pearland, Clear Lake, League City and Dickinson region nicely. We stopped in on a Tuesday Open Mic hosted by Laura Magers and friends. Laura puts together one of the bestequipped open mics I’ve seen, providing keyboards, bass & guitar amps, a full drum kit and complete PA system with lights. While this Open mic certainly welcomes soloists, Laura’s Open Mic can easily handle complete bands coming together for a friendly jam. That evening, we got to catch a few songs from Mid Life Crisis (I love that name!) and I do not have problem recommending them to our neighborhood booking managers. More to come… THE BOIL POT - Years ago, one would ride through the neighborhood with the windows down and the aroma of the BBQ smoker would be found scattered all around. These days, the aroma of burning mesquite has given way to boiling cayenne and crawfish boil and with that, a trip to Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack was in order. Years ago when they first opened, I asked them to cook me up a mixed boil pot with a little of everything. It’s become a big hit on their menu and while the offerings around the SCENE for crawfish are quite good, the best mixed boil pot, hands down, is at the Swamp Shack. In April, I caught Bruce Courtney live for the first time. Hailing from Friendswood, Bruce is a soloist and mostly a private party performer, and struck muses with the diners that evening going from Gilmour, to Jagger, Henley, Joplin, Petty, Frampton, BB King with surprising ease. I had a bit of trouble placing Bruce’s unique vocal style. Steve Shannon described it to me, we were enjoying a “Sinatra, Buble, Harry Connick Jr.-style of crooning that Bruce does.” Bingo! Patio season at the Swamp Shack.Can it get any better? It most certainly did as the Rockets and Thunder were playing on the big screen. Chalk up a good win for our home team! - Continued on Page 37

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 38 NEW DINNER CLUB - We stopped into Scout Bar and Pub Level to check out how the new dynamics are coming together. People tend to think of Scout Bar as a stand room only venue for good reason. Slowly, over the years, additional seating has been added letting patrons past their mosh pit prime youth to comfortably enjoy great shows up close and personal. With the addition of Pub Level to the space, a full service village is shaping up where folks can grab a bite to eat after work and before the show. Once the show is over, there’s no need to go straight home, but instead let the groove linger and take the party upstairs. I mark this as brilliant! When we stopped into Scout Bar / Pub Level in April, we caught a couple tribute bands: Electric Love Temple, A Tribute To The Cult who brought in fans from the north side of town to partake. Headlining the night was Guns4Roses. I’ve gotta score both of these bands high marks for bringing back the sonic experience that more than many enjoy. Things are still shaping up nicely at this Egret Bay hideaway. Lots of potential and to be continued... NAVIGATORS - This was one of the first bands I covered upon arriving on the SCENE, and I find them as crisp as ever. Judging by the full house (inside and out) at T-Bone Tom’s, so do a lot of other people. I arrived in time for their “early ‘80s MTV set” triggering flashback memories and after dinner dancing in fine Navigator form. Tiger Woods needs to see Don Bonner’s back surgeon. Since returning from surgery for a pinched sciatic nerve, Don has fully recovered and playing the horns stronger than ever. Every team has a new guy and drummer Jeff Hoke fits in well as a Navigator. Studying jazz under Sparky Koerner at the College of the Mainland, Jeff provides a tasteful groove along with band leader bassist Galen Medlenka and also brings along a voice which may qualify this band as a Five Dog Night. Lead guitarist, Randy Hughes uses smaller tube amps caged in plexiglass (that get that pleasing classic vintage tone without blowing out the crowd), is one of the area’s fine lead guitarist who has played long enough to be in the fine-aged scotch category of musicians and handled the Eric Clapton passages with ease on the guitar and vox that evening. This band sports a second lead guitarist, Curtis Beinhorn who drives one of the biggest pedal boards I’ve seen and provides perhaps the finest GR-33 player in the area. If a band is ever equipped to handle the Eagles Hotel California outro of Walsh & Felder and five part harmonies, my money is on the Navigators. - Continued on Page 34

“I thought back to some of the other fun bands I had played with, and how much fun it was. Some of those bands had horns, and having horns in a band opens up a whole new musical horizon,” he said. The horns have indeed broadened their playlist to include songs by musical greats such as Chicago and Earth, Wind, and Fire, though the crowd favorites also include hits like “Mustang Sally,” “Brown-Eyed Girl,” “American Pie,” and “California Dreamin’,” and their repertoire ranges from artists such as the Beatles to Jimmy Buffet.

Red Cat Jazz Festival: From Page 47 This year’s festival is Memorial Day Weekend, May 25-28 at Mall of the Mainland in Texas City, Texas. The Red Cat Jazz Festival provides funding to support the Red Cat Jazz Preservation Society’s year-round programming. In addition to presenting epic concerts by world-renowned jazz artists, the Red Cat Jazz Preservation Society is joining hands with the Diaz Music Institute and the World Youth Foundation, in celebration of the festival’s 7th anniversary by doing what all three do best: Support Jazz Education and Outreach. In support of jazz education, the Red Cat Jazz Preservation Society presents: The Rising Star Talent Competition, facilitated by the Diaz Music Institute, which promotes promising high school and college musicians to live stage performances during the Memorial Day weekend. S.T.E.A.M. up the JAZZ, facilitated by the World Youth Foundation, is a series of interactive workshops focused on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math, and The Red Cat Jazz Café Sunday Brunch, honored guests are military veterans and active personnel. The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum Color Guards will open the ceremony.

Vollie Ray’s Rock & Blues Bar: From Page 46 Both are complete with lighting effects, as well as a special effects curtain on the indoor stage that can change backgrounds when filmed. Additionally, musicians will be able to take away live recordings in the future. “Soon we plan to have the capability to have live recordings, as well as broadcast shows through different social media outlets, like Facebook Live,” Ray added. Live music is featured throughout the week in a variety of ways — and there is never a cover charge! Vollie Ray’s holds open jams Sunday through Tuesday (each night has a different host), Karaoke Nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays (hosted by Ray himself), and scheduled local live acts on Friday and Saturday nights. Starting this month, there will be live music Saturday afternoons as well. “We have a total commitment to music,” Ray said. “When I started this place, it wasn’t even about the alcohol. Our dedication is to music.” That being said, he noted that they have come up with some really interesting exclusive fusion drinks that set them apart from area bars. Popular among guests are those that include vodkas in a variety of Jolly Rancher flavors infused in them, a Sailor Jerry rum with pears, as well as Absolut vodka with pineapple and Cuervo with mandarin orange. All shots are chilled and served in frozen shot glasses for maximum enjoyment. A variety of craft beers are also available, and specials change throughout the week. “And our drink prices are that of a neighborhood bar,” Ray added. Ultimately, though, it’s all about the music at Vollie Ray’s. “The musicians are supporting us as much as we are supporting them. LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 37 HOUSTON SOUL-BLUES QUEEN - Who, in the words of my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, would be Miss Trudy Lynn. The first time I got a chance to see Trudy Lynn perform was during a brief set at the Jim Shortt Memorial nearly eight years ago, so when I saw her on the calendar at Katie’s in April, it was a show I knew I had to check out before her departure on her 2017 European tour. This Houston Blues Hall of Famer was simply in classy command that evening delivering the message in the music straight to the bone. I checked out her website and was impressed – her discography of 16 albums stands out as an impressive accomplishment. In an oddly impressive way, nowhere on her website could I locate links where I could find her music on-line, making this modern-day icon an ironic muse. According to her website, “ Trudy Lynn, was born Lee Audrey Nelms in the Fifth Ward, Houston, Texas. In addition to her parents’ 78s, she had a lot of casual contact with blues and R&B performers because her mother ran a beauty shop by the Club Matinee. Lynn would walk there from school trying to catch a glimpse of acts like Joe Hinton or Bobby “Blue” Bland, who would play the venue. She wasn't able to get closer to the music than the club’s door. “There wasn't any going in there,” she says. “The way we were raised, everybody could whoop your butt in the neighborhood. The neighborhood raised all the children where I grew up, not just your parents.” During breaks at Katie’s, a steady stream of listeners would approach Trudy and thank her, expressing the feeling of how she had sung the song to “them.” When I asked her how she connects so well with her listeners, Trudy shared with me how she and her band would not perform a number on stage until she and the boys proved to themselves that they “know the story.” Not to simply play the music but must “feel” the music. Something to ponder.... Chatting with Bob Emmons and The Blues Hound, James Nagel, Trudy Lynn is definitely “old school blues,” the kind that was everywhere in Houston back in the day. It’s slowing disappearing as they're dying off. If you’ve never seen a Trudy Lynn show in person, do yourself a favor and catch some class at one of her shows after she returns from Europe. Thanks Katie’s for the great show! MELLOW MERCURY - My astrological pals told me that we had a retrograding Mercury in April which called for a mission to score a mellow evening meal at Mediterraneo’s, the cafe with great food and vintage spaceflight photos hanging on the walls. It was a shock seeing more than half of the strip center village which included a community theater, and my favorite resale shop for vintage ‘60s Hawaiian shirts slated for demolition. The plans call for a parking garage, an odd fate similar to the former The Arts Alliance of Clear Lake facility. Good grief… Luckily for us, Mediterraneo’s avoided the wrecking ball, and so we got in an evening of lamb, pasta, wine, and Mickey Hobbs providing the evening serenading. Music experts describe Hobbs as a vocal tenor and goes from note to note with a voice as smooth as butter. Mission accomplished! If ever you’ve got an urgent mission to make yourself mellow, may I recommend a meal at Mediterraneo with Mickey Hobbs? - Continued on Page 33

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 34 TEXAS EQUUSEARCH - We stopped in for a bit to check out the Texas EquuSearch fundraiser at Jackie’s Brickhouse in April. These events are always cool with community coming out and pitching in. This year, special guest Dan Pastorini stopped in to help support the cause. Dan wishes to pass along that he’s been enjoying spending time with his Dante Pastorini Charity work and was delighted to be a part of this TexEQ fundraiser. A big shout out to the Lighthouse Charity Team for serving up dinner for the crowd and to the many donors and sponsors who pitched in to make this event happen. This year, the curious spectators were able to enjoy their crawfish or simply hang out at the palapa bar providing breathing room for serious event donors. Not many venues in the area are large enough for such a multi-purpose day. Jackie’s Brickhouse is one of those places large enough to do so. Filling the air between speeches, announcements and auctions was Rat Ranch doing a great job with the crowd on what was perhaps the nicest weather day of the month. This was the first time I’d ever seen this band play out in daylight, and they sounded great with Sound Meister Dale working the sound desk. If you’re new to the area and don’t know what it’s all about, “Texas EquuSearch Mounted Search and Recovery Team started in August 2000 with the purpose to provide volunteer horse mounted search and recovery for lost and missing persons. The Team was started in the North Galveston County area because of the high incidence of missing persons in the largely undeveloped area of South Harris and North Galveston Counties. The team is composed of volunteers of various experiences, with many being experienced horse owners. TexEQ currently has approximately 600+ members, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and is funded solely by donations.” - Continued on Page 32

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 33 SOMETHING NEW DEPARTMENT - This year, I’ve been trying out something new each month. In April I checked out the Annual Opera House Kids Festival down in Galveston. Many of you out there in the SCENE have joined the ranks of becoming new parents or even grandparents. Seeking fun activities, especially those which include live music and the arts, is always relevant. This is one superbly sponsored event with activities and events galore slanted directly to the VIPS in our world – our little ones, our future replacements – and if you haven’t already, should check this one out. One of the most interesting sights at the street event were tables upon tables of musical instruments simply set out with absolutely zero adult supervision. Watching eyes and minds of the young ones light up as they invented music was blinding. Kids, music and art... It’s a natural and in April, was part of our SCENE...

Lakewood Hires New Sailing Director Lakewood Yacht Club General Manager Terry Chapman announces that the club has secured veteran racer Watt Duffy as Sailing Director. Duffy has been coaching since high school but also has enjoyed sailboat racing success at both the amateur and professional levels. Duffy started sailing at age 12, and it quickly became his passion. He sailed throughout his youth and was a member of the Georgia Tech Sailing team. Having sailed a wide range of boats including the Snipe, the Sonar, the J22, and the Etchells in World Championships as well as the V15, Melges 32, TP52, and Turbo Sled 72, he also brings a wealth of experience in fleet racing, team racing, match racing, and distance racing. "I'm excited for this opportunity to be involved with such a great program," says Duffy. "I will use my 38 years of sailing experience and my passion for sailing to continue the development and growth of Lakewood's sailing program and ensure the program extends to sailors of all ages and levels of sailing experience."

Lakewood Anticipates Great Turnout for 35th Shoe Regatta • May 20 & 21 Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) and the Bay Access Foundation are pleased to present this year's KO Sailing Musto Shoe Regatta May 20 & 21, 2017. First hosted by LYC and organized by Bay Access in 1982, this regatta is open to the public and will be raced on Galveston Bay. It's a popular event for the local racers; in previous years, the crew members of the winning boats in each class received a pair of quality deck shoes. This year's first place winners in each class will be presented with a pair of primo Musto sailing shoes designed specifically for racing enthusiasts. The regatta is open to one-design, handicap and cruising sailboats over 20 feet in length with a cabin. Three courses will be available to accommodate the one-design, PHRF and distance classes. Visit the LYC website at lakewoodyachtclub.com to view the notice of race or register before the May 17 entry deadline. Crew waivers and other valuable information are also available. The entry fee is $85 with a $5 discount available to U.S. Sailing members. There are very few operations of any kind that can accurately claim to be “hitting their stride” at the age of 100, but that is most definitely the case in regards to Ellington Airport (EFD). For 100 years, Ellington Airport has served the interests of the United States, the State of Texas, the Houston region and made a major impact in both human aviation and spaceflight. Though more bright days appear to be lying ahead, the public is invited to a FREE event celebrating the rich history and the exciting future of Ellington Airport. Summer Camps Offer Variety Around Clear Lake and Galveston for Kiddos By Domino Taylor Summer is here and the kiddos will be out of school, so it is time to think of which camp is best for your children on summer break.
Farpoint Theatre is offering their summer tradition, 2017 Summer Theatre Drama Camp. This camp teaches acting, confidence building skills and behind the scenes education. The camp and stage is in Seabrook at the Community House on Anders. This is a non-profit day camp with a low cost for a week of fun and learning. At the end of the camp is a grand finale production. It is amazing how much the children learn in one week and present an entertaining play. Farpoint Theatre also offers grants for elementary and middle school children. As any community theatre, Farpoint is always seeking volunteers, sponsors and donations. The tentative dates for the summer theatre camp are July 10 through July 21. Find Farpoint Theatre’s page on Facebook for all the updates and camp applications. Break a leg, guys. Sea Star Base in Galveston has summer camps where the classroom meets the water. The high adventure camps gets the students out on the water and learn more than just how to sail. They will learn how and why the sails work. The camp connects the classroom learning with the real world application. Camps dates are July 10 through July 15 and July 17 through July 22 and are for students 13 to 17 years of age. The cost is $750 for the 6 days/5 nights camp, which includes US Sailing membership, Texas Boaters Education course, time at the helm sailing, 11 REACH modules (US Sailing’s STEM Education Program, which combines science, technology, engineering and math) and a visit on the Tall Ship Elissa. Combining educators, sailing instructors, engineers and scientists with today’s youth provides them with a one of a kind authentic learning experience, giving the campers the opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a cooperative work environment. Anchors aweigh! Space Center Houston is preparing for a Martian summer with robots, rovers and fun. Space Center offers an assortment of age-appropriate educational camp experiences. Campers will participate in innovative robotics challenges, take part in space-themed interactive experiences and explore all that Space Center Houston has to offer. Summer camps are by ages, camps for age 4, camps for ages 5-6, camps for ages 78, camps for ages 9-11 and camps for ages 12-14. The dates vary per camp starting in June, continuing with several sessions in July and ending summer with August camps. Registration is a must through their website, www.spacecenter.org, due to spaces filling quickly. Registration forms must be received five days prior to the first day of camp. Forms can be downloaded from the website and submitted electronically to camps@spacecenter.org. Wait lists are available for sold-out camps. Check-in is 8:15 a.m. and checkout is 3:15 p.m. There is also a before-care option available from 7 a.m. or an aftercare until 6 p.m. for an extra $15 per day. Specific camp questions can also be directed to the Reservation Department at 281-283-4744. A student can receive a 10% discount by becoming a Space Center Houston Member. COMPELLING CREATIVITY ARTS Featured Artist: Billie Brinkley
By Kelley Dawson Artist Billie Brinkley inspired and often ignited her students’ creativity while teaching art for Goose Creek Consolidated School District in Baytown for 32 years. Now having been retired for more than ten years, Brinkley has time to create her own intriguing pieces. She shared, “I like to make art that is not only beautiful, but compelling and makes people think.” Brinkley informed that what her art may mean to her is up to the viewers’ interpretations and no longer hers. “My gift is art,” stated Brinkley. She joked that teachers often seek out the kid who can do art to help with the class bulletin board and she was that kid. Brinkley majored in fine arts and also earned a Master of Arts degree. “My parents probably thought I’d be broke,” she added. Brinkley then became a teacher. “Teaching is exciting and fun. You can spin your sarcasm and the kids get it. We laughed a lot and learned a lot,” she shared. Brinkley explained there is a preconception that teaching art is easy. She declared, “It’s not. I once taught history and everyone has the same answer to the same test question. In art, everyone has a different answer to the same question.” Brinkley added, “As a teacher you must watch that bloom.” In addition to helping her students blossom creatively, Brinkley taught problem solving by instructing the kids “to figure out how to do it.” She said, “I used to tell my students the root word of smart is art.” Brinkley revealed that many of her students discovered their artistic gifts and were saved by art. She noted her school district had great wins with several kids earning national merit awards which they received in Washington DC. “I’m blessed to be able to teach. We are driven to make things beautiful and create. It’s in our DNA,” proclaimed Brinkley. She continues to create prolific pieces and has not painted herself into a corner. Brinkley’s portfolio is extraordinarily diverse from photorealistic paintings to unconstrained mixed media and unique paper mache sculptures. Brinkley’s drawings are engaging and endearing. Her mixed-media creations captivate the viewer and certainly cause a deep state of contemplation. Though she works with various mediums, Brinkley disclosed her favorite is Golden Open acrylics. She advised the particular acrylic doesn’t dry as fast and blends more like oils. Brinkley affirmed, “Art is just fun and enlightening; a gift from God.” She expressed she is a lifetime learner and has a high level of curiosity. She said, “I’m always learning and painting. Always on the lookout for inspiration.” Birding on trips to High Island is a current inspiration of Brinkley’s and gives her material to paint, draw, and sculpt. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop Brings Baja California Vibes to League City always use name-brand liquors. “A Jack and Coke here will always have Jack Daniels in it, nothing less,” he said. “We’re really a drinking shop with a taco problem!” Cadle joked.
By Sarah Piña Since its founding in 2003, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop has made its way from Fort Worth throughout the State of Texas in more than 100 locations. This past November, Fuzzy’s opened in League City, and the response has been resounding. This isn’t your average taco shop, after all! Throughout the week, guests can enjoy even more than the delicious eats and drinks for which Fuzzy’s has become so popular.
Though known for these unique drinks and eats, Fuzzy’s also offers more in terms of the community, as well.
“Every Monday, we have Geeks Who Drink Bar Trivia, which is a lot of fun and people love it,” General Manager Kirk Cadle said. “And on Thursdays, we have karaoke, which is unusual to find in a place where you can have some tacos, have your dinner, and then enjoy the fun in a family-friendly atmosphere,” he said.
“That’s what I really like about working with Fuzzy’s. We do different things and are always giving back to community organizations and schools. We really want to give back to the people who are so important to our community, such as local law enforcement and teachers,” he said.
The tacos, of course, are what Fuzzy’s has become famous for ($1.25 every Tuesday, by the way!); however, Cadle notes that at their League City location, the nachos reign supreme. “Nachos are a big favorite here. We have everything from spicy pork to shredded brisket nachos, and they come with queso, pico de gallo, feta, and garlic. The feta, in particular, seems like a really different choice for nachos, but it really gives them a very distinct flavor people just love,” he said. “The ingredients we use are different, because it has a more Baja-California influence to the atmosphere and the food. It is something that really sets Fuzzy’s apart from the TexMex scene in the area.” In addition to the Baja California-inspired flavors, Fuzzy’s also carries 35 beers on draft, many of them local Texas beers, as well as a variety of bottled beers. Happy Hour runs each week from Monday through Friday, from 2 to 6 p.m., and includes $1 off house margaritas and $1 off draft beers, among other specials. Be on the lookout for their featured drink of the month, as well!

However, the fine dining experience, or any way one chooses to enjoy their evening at Marais, doesn’t have to come with a hefty price. Happy Hour runs from Monday through Friday, offering $3 off their Social Starters, as well as drink specials which include $2 domestic drafts, $4 craft beers, and $5 margaritas, to name a few. “This is fine dining at casual dining prices. We want to give people control over what they want to spend, but still enjoy themselves in a beautiful place,” he said. Because of these factors and all Marais has to offer, the popularity of the restaurant has boomed since its inception in April. In addition to the indoor spaces, “Marais Outdoors” has a pirate/John-Lafitte inspired bar downstairs called The Plank on a lower level by the water as well a biergarten with authentic tables from Oktoberfest in Wilke, Germany. Add to that a large wrap-around waterfront terrace, adorned with outdoor chandeliers, eclectic hanging swings, and zero-gravity swings around a 120-year-old oak tree, and Marais becomes the recipe for the perfect evening out. “The sunsets are amazing out here, especially with our lighting,” Lilley said, referring to the several cozy and warm outside chandeliers that adorn the terrace. “It’s really the perfect spot for a nice date night, with a great wine and some of our appetizers,” he said. The appetizers, or “Social Starters” are certainly nothing to miss, as well as the full-service dining experience available for guests. Marias offers an evolving Gulf Coast casual menu created by Lilley in collaboration with Executive Chef Frank Pannitti, who has spent much of his well-established career in the best steakhouses and fine-dining restaurants in Texas, as well as local Chef de Cuisine Carole Barnett (formerly of Pod Zu’s and Kemah Steakhouse).
“We all have a background in Southern cooking,” Lilley said. “But I love the diversity of Houston and wanted the menu to reflect that, so it keeps evolving,” he said, making note of guest favorites such as Okra Rellenos (flash-fried whole okra stuffed with habanero jack cheese served with a Thai Chile dipping sauce) and Marais Bacon Candy (smoked, candied and cubed pork belly served with jalapeño pepper jelly). - Continued on Page 15

Located at 2015 FM 517 Road East in Dickinson, Marais boasts the best of many worlds that can fit any group, occasion, or budget. Formerly the site of Garcia’s Grill, owners Keith and Holly Lilley (who also own Dickinson BBQ next door) recently opened a venue unlike anything Houston – let alone the southeast area – has ever seen. Marais (French, meaning “marsh”) is a full-service, upscale restaurant, located on the Benson Bayou. It features a variety of spaces, including a fine dining area and multiple bars – from casual to more upscale – woven throughout the property both upstairs and downstairs. “Indoors, our main fine dining area (complete with nearly 150 wine lockers) adjoins the Benson Bar, which was inspired by the old industrial vibe of the Warehouse District of New Orleans, and even has custom-made swings. I would describe the interior as accessible elegance with a casual vibe, where you can explore and play. A lot of people sit here on these swings and really enjoy sitting and chatting for hours with a beautiful view of the bayou,” Lilley said. “We also have an elegant space for special events of 50 to 60 people,” he said, making note of the carefully-researched (“nothing is here by accident,” he noted), New Orleans-inspired details that embellish the several spaces one may enjoy their time in. These details include a variety of chandeliers, bars with high-end Statuary marble and custom-designed barstools for maximum comfort, and even gas lamps handmade and created by the very same fabricator of the lamps found in the French Quarter. - Continued on Page 11
