“We Fell in Love on Stage” Wood N Wind’s Love for Music and One Another By Sarah Piña A little over ten years ago, local musicians Steve Revak and Bobbie Emerson Revak met online, and later began dating. After a few months, both decided that it just wasn’t going to work out – romantically, at least. Fast forward to a time when Steve was hosting open mics all over the Clear Lake area, however, and the story began to change.

The Slags Sat., June 10 CABO

“I really wanted to start a group, and it just wasn’t happening,” Steve said. “One night in 2007, I was playing at the Bayview Duck, and I was told if I could find someone to sing with me, that they would hire me on a regular basis,” he said. This prompted him to call Bobbie back up and see if she would join him onstage. “She had a studio and all of these instruments on the wall at home. She brought a sax and a flute to the next gig, and we began playing at the Bayview Duck,” Steve recalled. And even after both thought that as a couple they weren’t meant for one another, “We fell in love on stage,” he said. A marriage then blossomed soon afterward, as did what area residents now know as the duo Wood N Wind, aptly named after Bobbie’s powerful voice and the variety of instruments they play. Steve is on the acoustic guitar, while Bobbie “pretty much does everything else!” he joked.

Mix Master Mike (of the Beastie Boys)

Sun., June 11 SCOUT BAR

Bobbie’s talent truly runs the spectrum, as her musical history indeed runs deep. “I started singing when I was 4 in a country western band with my father, who was also in the Air Force. I began playing piano at 6, then guitar at 10. I picked up the flute when I was 11 or 12, and then the saxophone at 25,” Bobbie said. “Then my first official paid gig was when I was 18. I took my 12 string and went and sang ‘Bobby McGee.’ The rest is pretty much history,” she said. Bobbie then went on to work with an Elvis impersonator playing the sax and flute, as well as become the lead singer of a big band performing soul music. - Continued on Page 31

Grand Funk Railroad, Josh Turner to headline Baytown’s 4th of July Celebration

Mr. Big Sat., June 17 SCOUT BAR

The City of Baytown is celebrating the 4th of July with two nights of free concerts at Bicentennial Park. The free event starts 6 p.m. Monday, July 3 with a concert by popular local band The Mambo Jazz Kings. Then at 8 p.m. the Grand Funk Railroad will take the stage. The band has toured for the last 48 years, preforming hit rock ‘n’ roll songs such as “Walk Like a Man,” “The Loco-Motion” and their first No. 1 hit, “We’re an American Band.” - Continued on Page 31

STAR-SPANGLED KEMAH: A Fun-Filled Week of Celebration for the Whole Family! By Sarah Piña

Abbi Walker

Why celebrate 4th of July for one day, when celebrations can continue all week? For the first time ever, the City of Kemah is extending the holiday over several days. Events will begin on Friday, June 30, and run through Tuesday, July 4. Kemah is known for the Boardwalk restaurants, amusement rides, games and its carnival-like atmosphere year-round. It’s also well-loved for the Lighthouse District and downtown areas which offer unique dining and nightlife experiences, boutique shopping, sailing schools, a winery and much more. Visitors and residents will have even more to look forward to with the opportunity to enjoy several days of fun, or even “stay and play” by planning a fun weekend getaway for the whole family.

Rapture

“This year, the City of Kemah and the Kemah Boardwalk have teamed up to co-sponsor fireworks planned every evening of the celebration (five nights, beginning at 9:30 p.m.), and several fun events each day. It will be very family-friendly. We really want to give everyone the opportunity to spend some time in the city and get to know all of the wonderful, unique things Kemah has to offer,” said Brenda Miller-Ferguson, Director of Communications, Human Resources, and Special Projects for the City of Kemah. Free events include an art walk, as well as offer many activities for children throughout the week, including a children’s bicycle parade along with the featured Star Spangled Kemah Parade, which will close out the holiday festivities. “The Toucan Alley Art Walk, for example, will feature many local artists and artisans, from glassblowers to jewelry makers, and there will be live music each day,” Miller-Ferguson said. Along with street DJs and various musicians playing throughout Kemah during the week, Top 40 variety band Rapture will perform, along with country music artists Bri Bagwell and Abbi Walker. And just announced as of press time: Country music star and Houston-born Jack Ingram, known for hits such as “Wherever You Are” and “Barefoot and Crazy” will headline on July 3 at 7 p.m. (These performers will take the stage in the city’s newly renovated parking lot, next to the visitors center.) With so many fun events happening during the week, visitors will also be happy to know that the area spaces and facilities will have a grand opening of sorts, as parking and restrooms in Kemah have recently undergone upgrades. “We just recently renovated our city parking lot to offer more parking spaces, as well as added restrooms in our Visitor’s Center,” Miller-Ferguson said. “It’s really going to be a great week in Kemah!” she said. So bring the whole family, and get ready for the largest 4th of July celebration that Kemah has ever had! Entries are still being accepted for many events, such as the children’s parade, and StarSpangled Kemah city events will free of charge (with the exception of some private events). For more information on this and all specific schedules of activities, make sure to follow the Star-Spangled Kemah Facebook page to keep up to date as they develop, call 281-3341611, or visit www.kemah-tx.gov. Happy Independence Day!

JUNE 2017

The ’80s are Baaaaack and Ready to Party in Clear Lake By Shawn Domingues Studio 80, Clear Lake’s newest nightclub, pays tribute to an era when Frankie said, “Relax,” Madonna was ‘like a virgin’ and Prince was king – and you can tell they take their ’80s theme seriously by the way they parked their car outside during their grand opening party last month. The silver DeLorean, a replica of the time-traveling machine used in “Back to the Future,” landed on NASA Road 1 and brought the ’80s back with it in full force. For those who grew up wanting their MTV (back when the music channel actually only played music videos) and those who love ’80s music, but have never seen the videos of their favorite songs, Studio 80 is “totally tubular” – the perfect place to wax on nostalgic and dance the night away. With wall-to-wall TVs that exclusively play music videos all night long and an illuminated dance floor, Studio 80 captures the true essence of the ’80s club scene and gives a nod to legendary New York nightclubs like The Palladium and Studio 54. In fact, owner Jeff Murtha was once a bartender at Studio 54, which explains his passion for the era and accuracy in replicating it. “It was electric back then,” Murtha said, “There was a vibe and atmosphere in the night clubs of the ’80s like no other time before or since, and I wanted to recreate that experience for our clientele. Music has a way of bringing back memories and seeing the videos that we grew up with really enhances that experience.” Bill Byous, former DJ at J. Larkin’s (Clear Lake’s premier nightclub back in the ’80s) keeps the dance floor packed at Studio 80 with tunes from Michael Jackson, Prince, Depeche Mode, Wang Chung, George Michael, Duran Duran and many more. “Like J. Larkin’s back in the day, Studio 80 is a place to go, meet with friends and dance to great music,” said Byous. Open Wednesday through Sunday, Studio 80 offers a variety of drink specials and promotions. Wednesday night, for example, is “Country Night” with $2 Longnecks and $1.50 well drinks – featuring country music from the ’80s and ’90s. On Thursday, Studio 80 goes ’90s featuring music from both the ’80s and ’90s with $2 Longnecks and $3 Crown & Down drink specials. On Sunday, the “After the Lake Party” on the patio is sure to hit the spot with drink specials, live bands and kabobs on the grill. The dress code is strictly enforced Friday and Saturday nights (no ball caps, tank tops or saggy baggy pants), so come “dressed to impressed” to get in the door, or better yet, get radical and wear some totally awesome ’80s attire and they will waive the $5 cover charge.

Loose Notes by Andy Eng

STARTING OFF - It went down to the wire…. As I’m writing this, I’m downloading this year’s Oleander Party, a slam-dunk annual over-the-top event. Word from several of you good readers is that you’re really liking the full glossy, full color look The SCENE has become. Thank you for your kind words and patience as we continue to grow from the B&W format of old. One hazard with the glossy color format is that the printer needs extra time and with the Memorial Day Holidays upon us and the 4th of July right around the corner, we’ve been needing to “race” to get as much content as possible with the holiday deadlines.

Rain showers could not ruin this annual over-the-top event as a last-minute relocation from the traditional musical sanctuary to the refuge of the American Legion Post 291 saved the day! Gratitude to Commander Rick and the Post, for letting the show to go on under one roof and to all the hardy souls that handled the venue change without skipping a beat. Bravo!!! The Oleander bands this year included Funksion, Andy and the Dreamsicles, and this year’s newcomer, the newly rejuvenated Fuzzy Side Up. Each of the bands nailed it at this annual party for musicians by musicians. Special recognition this year went to Darryl and Marsell, the original cooks at the beginning whose efforts made this party legendary. I had not seen either in more than three years, and, in the case of Daryl, the man looked incredibly good, putting on nearly 60 pounds, quitting tobacco and drinking after having died twice. Funny how that works! - Continued on Page 35

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 37 The food at this year’s event was fantabulous! Thanks to all who helped make this happen. Music-wise, not a single song did I hear play twice the entire day and the dance floor was never absent of dancers the entire afternoon. Twas truly magical and over the top! FOLLOW UP - In the April edition of The SCENE, we mentioned the Open Mic at Vollie Ray’s Rock & Blues Bar and catching a couple numbers from Mid Life Crisis, and knew a follow-up was in order. Thanks to a last minute promotion, I was able to catch Mid Life Crisis at Hugh & Jeff’s. This four-piece alternative and classic rock band consists of Allan Creger on vocals, Josh Barry on drums, Darrell Masingale on guitar, and Myrna Sanders on bass. Creger has a voice that’s uniquely powerful and well-cared for between songs with shots of honey and hot tea chasers. You can tell who they are after hearing only a couple of measures. We arrived in time to catch the opening of the second set with a series of Chris Cornell songs, a well-received tribute to the late lead vocalist of the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave. With remembrance and respects accomplished, Mid Life Crisis shifted gears and took the house into party mode with a convincing command of rock & roll covers. Complete with musical talent, an ample PA and stage lights, this band is party ready and with a name, “Mid Life Crisis,” these folks are on my watch list. - Continued on Page 34

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35 REASON TO READ - ‘Twas time to stop in at T-Bone Tom’s where we took in an evening of *very* clever originals at the Pirates and Poets show. Hosted by Donny Brewer, this evening’s guests included Bryan Shayne and Jim Hoehne, the “Billy Crystal of Trop Rock from Wisconsin.” Throughout the evening, each performer shared the story behind the song making for a great evening of listening enjoyment. The Galveston Bay Parrot Heads filled out the audience, uncharacteristically not dancing - rather glued to their seats taking in the compositions as was I. Through the night, Brewer stuck to his tried and true recipe of songs of pirates and rum, Shayne did a splendid job finding common ground between Trop Rock and Country, and Hoehne (a journalist and sports announcer by trade) struck my muse as many of his clever songs came about from reading daily police reports in the local Wisconsin newspaper. Maybe it’s time I get reacquainted with reading SOULFULLY REVISITED - It was Friday; time for dinner and off to La Porte to Mainly Drinks. This place has one of the best munchie dishes on the planet, the Smothered Lobster Fries with Shrimp and Crawfish. For dinner, we enjoyed the coffee crusted ribeye, chicken Cabernet and a bottle of Earthquake, a warm and smooth peaking petite sirah from Lodi AVA that scored a 92 on the Wine Enthusiast scale. Tonight’s musical entertainment was Jeff Lopez. We’ve enjoyed his band, Crossroads, on several occasions and always placed Jeff in the loud rock & roll category. Boy, did he have me fooled! Playing on a Custom Shop Carvin electric that sounded distinctly acoustic, Jeff entertained us with an evening of easy listening music. I checked out his website (jeff-lopez.com) and found that my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt had covered Jeff and here’s what he had to say, “ His highly melodic voice is among the best I've heard for some time; it's warm, rich, and projects well. He’s also an accomplished guitarist; his accompaniment complimented his vocals exceptionally well. I soon found out I was not the only patron paying attention. Lopez got strong well-deserved applause after every song.” My words: enjoyable and easy listening. I’m not sure how Debra Gallington picks the bands that play at Mainly Drinks. Over the years, their music selection has been talented, delightfully smooth and good for the ears and soul - sort of in line with her choice of wines, beers, hanging art and menu. Works for me! NO REFUND BAND - I stopped in to Katie’s in May to catch Erin Jaimes but had my days mixed up and got to catch Ricky Jackson and The No Refund Band. Ricky was an instant force when he arrived on the local music scene (Bob & Katie Emmons always had a knack for spotting great talent) and wasted no time developing a following in Bacliff and around the region. 2015 was the breakout year with the No Refund Band winning the Houston Blues Society the Best Local Self Produced CD Award with “Current State of Blue,” winning the local Houston Blues Challenge and was selected to represent the Houston Blues Society at the 2015 Memphis International Blues Challenge. When I caught The No Refund Band at Katie’s in May, they were short their horn and keyboard player yet still entertained the house with front man Ricky Jackson, Rik Robertson on bass, Walter Kross on drums, and Anthony Terry on sax. The band was remarkably tight never really knowing what song was next, relying on Jackson to read the mood if the room and lay onto a few measures of intro before catching the groove and joining the charge. The stage presence of this band is first class with a healthy 85db floor punching cleanly to 108db affording excellent punctuation, vocal passages, and loooong tasty solo runs despite nobody driving the mixer. Pick a night, any night and you’ll never go wrong at Katie’s. - Continued on Page 33

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 34 HOMETOWN FAN CLUB - We’ve been following the combination of Scout Bar and Pub Level for a couple months now and been super delighted with the new groove forming. In May, we stopped into Pub Level to recharge ourselves after a day at work and before the Dennis Quaid show. Smart move! The servings are silly huge and the service was super bringing stacks of food orders downstairs all night long. I was chatting with Lester, an IT wizard who was busy quaffing down craft beers and working the Digital Pour app on his phone. "The selection and the prices here are fantastic! All the new happening places are using this app (Digital Pour). All my friends use this app. We earn points for drinking different beers, just like Pokémon!" Did I say the food was good? As for the Dennis Quaid show, when the doors opened, the line was already wrapping around the building. I got a chance to chat with Dustin Condon, frontman for Rainchild who just finished his opener, “I’ve no idea why Thomas picked us to open. But this audience was GREAT!!! They came for the music, and it felt good performing to an audience that appreciates music.” Which probably best describes the audience that evening. I’ll have to ‘fess coming into the area in ‘98, I wasn’t properly up to speed on Quaid and was hoping to catch a glimpse of Don Felder whom I thought would be playing with Quaid that evening. I bumped into Quaid heading in through the back doors. He’s an ordinary-looking fellow wearing a long sleeve paisley shirt. On stage, Quaid was an entertainment monster with a crazy looking play list - Some Doors, some Clash, Walk With the Angels, and playing in a Wyatt Earp flick. Amazing what learning piano can do for you. Lot’s of people who aren’t Scout Bar regulars left the place very happy that night and I’ve suspicion if Quaid were to stop by again, even more would come. HOMECOMING - is a good thing and in May, Matthew Beard and JBone White along with their new bandmate, Jason Wilson arrived to a hearty welcome home gathering at League City’s Easy Street Lounge. It was two Octobers ago when these two set out across the country armed with their music and with That Captain, “a band consisting of two dreads, a jock, and a couple hippies.” Travelling from coast to coast and breaking down walls with the Folk ‘n Reggae, born here in the Clear Lake area, these guys presently reside in Humboldt County, California fortifying their “very own special blend of roots-reggae, bluegrass, and trippy good times music.” According to Beard, “We haven't played the hometown in over a year. Since coming home, the reception has been phenomenal, it’s been a treat sleeping in my own bed for the first time in years. - Continued on Page 32

went to work in a serious way not looking for bargains but bidding up the auctions in a keenly serious way. Scoring very high marks on the Charity Navigator website, the mission of the Sunshine Kids Foundation “ adds quality of life to children with cancer by providing them with exciting, positive group activities, so they may once again do what kids are supposed to do . . . have fun and celebrate life!” Kids, cool… Cancer, evil…. If you’re of like mind, ponder pitching in the next time there’s a Sunshine Kids event nearby. Kudos to Cabo for hosting this cool event and to all the great supporters for pitching in! Cheers!

We found it important to explore beyond the Clear Lake area, otherwise the saturation and burn out sets in. It’s a curse that you have to leave but it's a rite of passage heading out into the road, surviving the struggle, getting that hungry edge… The most interesting thing is that the best bands in California aren't from California. Over time, we've been finding out the other bands who are traveling and formed a camaraderie... Playing acoustically, there's a lot of looking at each other while playing and knowing each other well enough to take the music. The band has been mostly gone to live recordings of shows (ala Grateful Dead) although the Tree EP project was assembled in the studio. We also got a producer. Craig Lawrence , a Clear Lake High graduate and a cadre of recording engineers. You'd be surprised how much talent comes out of this area that you don't know about.“ SUNSHINE KIDS - Humid and windy with a high tide was the Saturday. Down in G-town came pictures of surfers shooting the tube with some nice 8 foot wave action and water was covering many Clear Lake piers making for a perfect day to be at Cabo in Clear Lake as they along with Berkshire Hathaway, hosted the 4th Annual Crawfish Festival benefitting the Sunshine Kids Foundation. With an all-youcan-eat crawfish boil on the deck and Radio Frequency on the stage, the Sunshine Kid supporters

Wood N Wind: Continued From Page 48 “I’ve pretty much done every genre of music except pop and rap. But the cool thing is I GET TO do it, not a lot of people get to do this, and I’m blessed to do it as part of my profession,” she said, who also works as a full-time auctioneer, while Steve works in the computer industry when he’s not performing.

Tuesday, June 20

How is it working as husband and wife onstage, though? Both Steve and Bobbie agree that once they hit the stage, “We are NOT married!” Steve laughed. “This way, we can’t tell one another what to do!” Bobbie added. “But it’s great [working with your spouse in a group]. You don’t have to worry about musicians not showing up. And he’s such a comedian. He’s hilarious! We have a lot of fun, and it’s always a pleasure to get out and play for people,” she said.

Vinyl Draught 20 will be held at Preamble Lounge and Craft House (20801 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas 77598) on Tuesday, June 20 from 7-9pm. Vinyl Draught is an upscale business networking event, without the pressure of selling or being sold to. Come out and enjoy some great Music and Draught Beer.

Wood N Wind have established an area fan base through their varied performances, which are principally centered on Southern Rock genre. Their repertoire regularly includes songs by artists such as the Allman Brothers, Janis Joplin, and the Doobie Brothers. And the love for the music, as well as one another, always comes out onstage. “We do play a wide variety of music,” Bobbie said. “A lot of people are shocked at all of the instruments on stage when they come to a show, and they see a woman up there playing all of that stuff. My voice is also low and pretty powerful, so they are always taken back a little. I give them 500 percent every time I go out; it doesn’t matter if I’m playing for 10 people or 100,” she said. “We really put a lot of emotion into our performances.”

Hope to see you there, Bertrand McHenry and Doug Meisinger

Wood N Wind regularly play the Bayview Duck the first Friday of each month and the first Wednesday of each month at T-Bone Tom’s. (Music runs in the family; Bobbie’s daughter Angie Emerson, also a flutist, now hosts open mics at the newly opened Vollie Ray’s Rock and Blues Bar, as well!). Check out Wood N Wind’s Facebook page (WoodNWind – no spaces) for upcoming shows and events from this dynamic duo!

Baytown 4th of July: Cont. From Page 48 Free concerts continue on Tuesday, July 4, with local band Picture Book at 4:30 p.m. followed by another local band in Al White and the Chaparral at 6 p.m. Then headlining the 4th of July celebration will be country music star Josh Turner, who produced a Top Thirty hit, “Lay Low” and “Hometown Girl” from his sixth studio album, titled “Deep South” which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Top Country Albums chart. Turner is best klnown for hits such as “Firecracker,” “Would You Go With Me,” and “Your Man.” In addition to music, there will be vendors and a children’s amusement area. Activities include a fishing tank, a wetlands touch tank and games. New to this year’s event will be Magic in the Sky fireworks pyrotechnics out of San Antonio, replacing Zambelli Fireworks which is no longer doing shows in Texas. Fireworks conclude the celebration at 9:30 p.m. The show will be accompanied by patriotic music by DJ Mike.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 32 MAGDY & SONIA’S HOUSE - We ended last month’s Mercury retrograde where we started: at Mediterraneo, this time for their specialty dish, the Paella Valenciana, where they have a very special way of preparing calamari. As the menu said, the meal was well worth the extra wait as owners Magdy & Sonia Kotb brought in Jameela of the Bella Donna Dance Company and a new music act into their house, Roberto del Toro and Reuben Garcia. Sitting in for a set with the duet was Vicente Castenada and the three of them sat about serenading the audience with long runs of Bossa Nova Latin Fusion Jazz heavy with Cuban, New York, Brazilian South American - As if any moment, the girl from Y Panama would show up. And while she did not show, we were treated to a very nice belly dance show from Jameela to go along with dinner. The music all night was long and mindful, perfectly made for the getaway, be it in mind or body. Word is that these two have a Gipsy Kings cover band project larger group project playing at Preamble. Something to definitely put on the watch list. SUNNY SUNDAY - The humidity blew out one Sunday and with temperature no higher than 75, no humidity and no mosquitos, patio season returned. The drive into the lighthouse district was a cinch and Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack was the destination. The singer on the Seabrook Beach Club Stage with the Gibson SJ200 was a new talent for me that evening. David Joel, from Beaumont, turns out to be quite the active balladeer in these parts. On this pleasant Sunday evening, David performed for the Swamp Shack diners in song with stories presented in clear witty manner and at a pleasant 36-80db. In a Mellancamp-like manner, he shared with us a set of originals Live Once / Die Once, Steamy Windows, and All Night - new song complete with a YouTube video about how it’s possible to love Johnny Cash and Jesus. As for dinner, we enjoyed the fried shrimp basket and crawfish so big, three shellings were needed to manage the tails and two claws. Huge! IT’S A WRAP - Hope you and yours had an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. Crawfish season is winding down for the year and it’s time to set our sights towards fun on the water. Be sure to keep a couple extra copies of The SCENE around - your pad, car and at work for the rundown of what’s happening around town. Thanks to all the great venues and musicians out there for a fabulous month of May. Looking forward to catching you out there in June on The SCENE. Cheers!

Lakewood Youth Sailors Challenged Competition at 2017 USODA Team Trials Lakewood Yacht Club's (LYC) youth sailing program was represented well by 15 sailors for this year's KO Sailing / 2017 USODA Team Trials held May 6-14 at Brant Beach Yacht Club in Long Beach, New Jersey. USODA Team Trials is the most important event of the year for ambitious Optimist sailors, who must first earn their chance to compete in this challenging competition by pre-qualifying in several events around the country. "Fortunately, our Opti team saw conditions similar to what they are used to practicing in during the year in Galveston Bay," said LYC Head Coach Bernat Gali. "Eight LYC sailors qualified to the final round in the Gold Fleet and the remaining seven qualified for the for the Silver Fleets." Noah Zittrer finished 6th overall, just 10 points away from qualifying for Worlds. However, he earned the opportunity to represent Team USA in the next IODA European Championships, to be held in Bulgaria in late July. Scott Mather and Tony Slowik finished 18th and 19th respectively, earning their chance to represent Team USA at the next IODA North American Championships, to be held in Toronto in early July. Since Zittrer, Mather and Slowik placed in the top 20 at Team

Trials, the trio also secured the right to become part of the US Opti National Team next year. Lucas Tenrreiro and Parker Tyson, who were sailing in their first team trial competition also qualified for a spot in the IODA North Americans. Emma McInnis, Eric Jayawant and Kelly Bates rounded out the LYC sailors who qualified to sail in the Gold Fleet. Two LYC sailors placed in the Top 10 in Silver Fleet. Sheridan Shaw was 4th overall as well as 1st Girl, and Stephen Momeier took 7th. Piotr Smieja, Emilie Janzen, Nicky Abate and Ava Anderson all performed well in the Silver Fleet. "All of our sailors performed well," added Gali. "Even the sailors who didn't do as well as they would have liked overcame their challenges and disappointment by sailing strong the last two days, showing great competitive spirit. It was a fabulous learning experience for all of our sailors." Contact the sailing director at sailingdirector@lakewoodyachtclub.com. Or visit the LYC website at www.lakewoodyachtclub.com to learn more about the LYC Sailing Program or upcoming camps and summer sailing classes.

Lakewood Yacht Club Reschedules Heald Bank Race Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) and the Bay Access Foundation recently announced that the 2017 Heald Bank Race originally schedule to take place in late April will be raced July 29-30, 2017. Heald Bank Race is one of the three-event Texas Offshore Circuit (TORC). The Houston Yacht Club Offshore Regatta and the Galveston Bay Cruising Association Regatta constitute the other two TORC events. Boats sailing in the PHRF Spinnaker Class will be eligible to compete for the TORC championship trophy, the Texas Navy Cup if they enter all three races. Competitors sailing in the PHRF Non-Spinnaker Class in all three events will be eligible for the S. Rhoads Fisher Trophy. Visit the LYC website at lakewoodyachtclub.com for information. true for Roy Orbison fans.

By Domino Taylor The Galveston Summer Musicals are back! And opening the 2017 Summer Season is the Rodgers & Hammerstein's legendary South Pacific. The romantic musical and deeply felt drama plays out June 9, 10 and 11, starring Broadway's Rob Gallagher, who held the same role in the Broadway revival, as Emile De Beque. This Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning musical has melted the hearts of audiences for over 60 years with the unforgettable score filled with all-time favorites like Some Enchanted Evening, I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair, There is Nothing Like a Dame and Bali Ha'i. Texas Family Musicals' production of this classic show is at Galveston's Moody Gardens Convention Center with two performances daily. All the musicals this summer have a 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. performance at Moody and inside, no more sweltering outside. Made possible by The Moody Foundation, the various tickets are affordable for the shows of this magnitude.

A special engagement is Moments Remembered; The lives and loves of Lily and Daniel Grant, who met in their early twenties and follows them until their autumn years. This play is written by and starring Judy Norton, who played Mary Ellen on The Waltons. Her co-star is Donny Most, who played Ralph on Happy Days, will share their adventures, tragedies and joys as they raise a family and live life to the fullest. Little did the 320 teenagers and chaperones know as they crowded into the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, that they would be witnessing history, the last concert of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Through the magic of theatre everyone becomes 16 once again as the production company recreated this historical last concert in The Night the Music Died, playing June 16, 17, 18, 30 and July 1 and 2. Recording artist Kevin Kratzke will return as Buddy Holly. This fabulous show has played for 11 years straight to nearcapacity crowds or sellouts. It will be a walk through the ’50s with original Rock and Roll and includes referring to being in Iowa. Chris Trimboli joins the lineup of stars for this season in the role of Roy Orbison, which he originated, and will revive his role in The Roy Orbison Experience, July 6, 7 and 8. OFF “Z” WALL

EN

Featured Artist: Jim “Z” Zanelli

By Kelley Dawson Local artist, Jim “Z” Zanelli designs unique, playful art with reclaimed wood. “I like off-the-wall stuff. I know I’m not the greatest artist, but I love playing and creating,” he admitted. Zanelli told he has a natural ability and has created art his whole life. He mentioned he only took standard art courses in grade school. “I started by painting murals. I was doing it, because I like it,” he said. As a resident of Kemah, Zanelli finds piles of wood from neighbors’ home construction projects. With permission, he rummages through the wood junk piles to collect workable pieces. Zanelli stated, “I search for good shapes and solid wood. I imagine what I want to do with it. I even collect pilings to make into totem poles.” Zanelli further explained when an idea comes to his mind; he draws the image on wood, paints it, and then cuts it with a jigsaw. “Whatever comes to mind with the wood piece, and I play with it,” informed Zanelli. He leaves certain creations as a painting on a wooden canvas and others are cut out to a specific shape. Zanelli often incorporates the existing features of wood such as knots of a cedar post and the natural patterns found in wood to create the shapes and designs much like seeing forms in clouds. He typically accents what is there. Zanelli advised it’s how the wood speaks to him that dictates the final product. He shared he sometimes integrates strands of rope and other found objects with his wooden projects for more depth and texture. Zanelli constructs both small and large scale wood works. The majority of his creations are nautical in theme; including distinctively different sea-life, mischievous mermaids, and whimsical fish and lizards. “Any work creating is learning. The more you do, the better you get,” declared Zanelli. He added, “I enjoy it and making money doing what I love.” But for Zanelli, the most rewarding part of his job is the reactions from the viewers. He expressed, “It gives you a good feeling inside when people appreciate your work. I see folks taking selfies with my art. I love that. It gives me a great feeling of accomplishment.”

BARge 295: Cont. From Page 9 In addition to larger windows for panoramic views, the vessel also features aquatically inspired counters throughout. Water-going patrons familiar with the space will also appreciate the structural changes that have taken place. “We’ve added more bathrooms, which also includes having a unisex bathroom upstairs. The stairs have been rebuilt. With how it’s all is being restructured, we will have a bigger and open kitchen which will offer small dishes and shareable plates,” Emel said, and also hinted that these menu items are likely to include Korean and Vietnamese-inspired fusions in addition to American fare. But wait – there’s more! Knothead’s, which shares the same parking space as BARge 295, will also undergo significant changes. “By mid-summer, Knothead’s will become the Seabrook Beer Garden. It’s going to be totally transformed, especially from the outside,” Emel said. “The biggest change will be that a full Renderings of office space to be developed patio space, a true over the water between BARge 295 and the beer garden, will be Seabrook Beer Garden. added to the rear of the building. It’s going to be fantastic,” he said. Both BARge 295 and now Knothead’s are sister businesses to the Seabrook Classic Café, located next door at 2511 NASA Parkway.

TEXAS OUTLAW CHALLENGE Turns Clear Lake into a Top High-Performance Boating, Biking & Car Destination

The 10th Annual

TEXAS OUTLAW CHALLENGE: June 21 - 25 National Shootout Championship & Pony Express Run added to this year’s event Texas Outlaw Challenge founder and organizer Paul Robinson has added to his event each year to earn its current status as the biggest of its kind in Texas and one of the top Performance Boating events and destinations nationally. And that tradition continues as the 10th edition of this dynamic one-of-a-kind event is poised to be the biggest yet and will include a host of upgrades, improvements and the addition of more events geared towards the general public. But the biggest news is a change of venue for the National Shootout Championship. After nine years of executing a safe and efficient shootout format in the open waters of Galveston Bay, organizers have been granted exclusive access to the calmer, and more protected waters of Clear Lake by the six cities representing jurisdiction on the lake. So instead of needing a ride out into the bay to watch some of the most dynamic action of the event, spectators will be able to watch from the shores of Clear Lake. According to Robinson, the event is being rewarded for a perfect safety record and the new course approval will become a catalyst for even further growth of the Shootout with an upswing in public viewing opportunities. “Every year we fill the local hotels, raise money for 10 local charities, bring money into the community and are invited back to do it the following year.” Robinson explained. “Last year we brought more than $1 million to the community. And we expect an even bigger impact this year.” Note: See the center spread map of this magazine for a detailed breakdown of featured public events. See the premium advertising spread on pages 6 and 7 for more details about the Texas Outlaw Challenge. See page 15 for a full schedule of 2017 Texas Outlaw Challenge events.

What is New in 2017? 1. This will be the 10th Edition of the Texas Outlaw Challenge and the biggest yet. As of press time, boat registration and hotel room bookings are already ahead of schedule and the calendar of events is the biggest yet. See page 15 for the complete calender of events. 2. For the first time in event history, the National Shootout Championship (Friday, June 23, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) is being relocated from the open water of Galveston Bay to Clear Lake. This will allow more spectators to witness one of the highlights of the shootout from the shore line. Not since Clear Lake hosted the Hydroplane races in 1982, 1983 and 1984, has this kind of power and speed been displayed on Clear Lake. 3. Also new in 2017 is the Outlaw Boat Parade (Saturday, June 24, 10-11:30 a.m.) when 200+ boats pass through the Clear Creek channel along the Kemah Boardwalk as they depart for a day of performance boating featuring a total of over 850,000 Horse Power within the fleet!! This event’s economic impact to the community was estimated more than $1 million in 2016. With many local hotels already sold out, a boost to the local economy of even more is expected this year.

By now, commuters who frequent NASA Parkway in Seabrook have noticed demolition and construction at 2613 ½ NASA Parkway, the area that formerly housed the historic Turtle Club. The reason: exciting changes are coming, just in time for summertime fun! The floating bar is now named BARge 295 because it was the 295th vessel the company Brown and Root fabricated, as welded on the hull (hence, BARge 295). Set to open by the end of June, BARge 295 will offer a more tropical experience to the Seabrook area.

“BARge 295 will have a more Caribbean feel with a Texas coast theme and overtone,” owner Brad Emel said, who is working along with coowner Mike Robinson for this transformation. “We’ve expanded and added more windows for a greater view of the waterfront,” he noted.
