Let it Rock! A Tribute to Bon Jovi By Sarah Piña Last October, George Mangos wanted to build a guitar just like famed Bon Jovi guitarist Ritchie Sambora’s. Today, Let it Rock! A Tribute to Bon Jovi, is now a full-fledged homage to the great ’80s band playing venues all over Houston and the Clear Lake area.

KGBGees Sat., July 15 ZONE 504

“I wanted to build a guitar like Richie Sambora had, with the star inlays, and it got me wondering if there was a tribute band for Bon Jovi in the Houston area. I then saw there was a need, and I wanted to fill that need,” Mangos said.

UPCOMING SHOWS

After their first big show at House of Blues last fall and a couple of tweaks to the band lineup, the band lineup is now Mangos (guitar), along with Kevin Cody (vocals), Jarod Frank (drums), Jason Ward (bass), and Deanna Haughey (keyboards).

Saturday, July 8 House of Blues

with Judgement Day

(Tribute To Whitesnake) “We began this tribute not only for the music, but the look and the experience of watching a live Bon Jovi show. We really wanted to strive for that,” Mangos said, who also manages the band. “We all believe that any musician around town can learn the music, but we want to bring the experience. We want you to sit there and think ‘I’m watching Bon Jovi, I’m hearing Bon Jovi.’”

Galactic Empire to visit the Land of Manned Space Flight Some of the most infamous and feared villains in the galaxy will be landing locally this month when Galactic Empire headlines a special show at Scout Bar on Monday, July 24. The relatively new Star Wars cosplay band went viral last year when they released a music video of their twist on classic pieces from the iconic John Williams Star Wars soundtrack. Earlier this year, the band released their debut self-titled album through Rise Records featuring metal tributes to favorite Star Wars songs such as "Duel of the Fates" and "The Imperial March." Now they have headed out on a summer tour that's bound to be one of the coolest tours this side of the galaxy with a stop this month at Scout Bar.

What time is it? It’s 504! Step in the New Zone! 504 in Kemah Under New Ownership By Sarah Piña Since the end of April, Zone 504 in Kemah has been under new ownership – and signs of exciting, fun changes are already showing! This is apparent both inside and out of the well-known bar, a Kemah Historical Society Landmark which first served as a summer home built in 1926 (and now also holds the title of oldest house in Kemah!) Heather Smith, a veteran of the industry with more than 20 years of experience, recently acquired Zone 504 with Jim Thompson, silent partner of Zone 504 and a friend for over 30 years. The shift in the space has been immediate, from the cosmetic and structural changes to the staff and even expanded hours “We’ve brought in a whole new team and are starting over fresh,” Smith said. “We are truly family here. People say you can’t work and live together, but we basically do. We have a big-family mentality, and each one of us specializes in their own unique field. To add to the family hospitality, Zone 504 also boasts the lowest drink prices in the Kemah area and has expanded on their selection of craft beers as well as their selection of premium liquors, making possible drinks created especially by Smith such as the Tasty AF Bomb, the Apple Pie Mule, and a refreshing Ginger Margarita. Specials run throughout the week, with $2 wells on Tuesdays and $1.50 wells on Wednesdays. Zone 504 has also already started to bring in new live music acts who have never frequented 504 – or Houston, ever! Local favorites Rat Ranch and The Slags will now make regular appearances; however, the venue will also host several celebrity EDM DJs in the coming months, with some already making surprise appearances over the wildly successful Texas Outlaw Weekend. With the new shift in live music, plans are now in the works to expand upon current spaces for drinks and tunes in the two-story bar. “The upper deck will be complete with a bar used during special occasions in the coming months,” said Alan Kendrick, Zone 504’s bar manager (who many area locals know from Lance’s Turtle Club since the mid-’80s). “And besides updating the décor and colors inside and out, we are also taking part of the parking lot and turning it into a patio area, while the garage in the back will be turned into an outdoor stage,” he added. Changes in food are also in the works, with catering by Joshua’s Southern Spice forthcoming. In the end, though, it’s all about a new great experience for guests of Zone 504. “We make a great team that synergizes well together and encompasses everything, and most importantly, we always put customer service first,” said Smith.

Enjoy the view from the upper deck THE SCENE

Located at 504 Kipp Ave., Zone 504 is open daily from noon to 2 a.m. Head down to the Zone for the newest drinks, eats, and an updated live music atmosphere. Heather Smith and her expert staff are ready to offer guests one of the most unique experiences in Kemah!

Dickinson’s “One-Stop Pub Crawl!” Marais, a full-service, upscale restaurant in Dickinson on the Benson Bayou has enjoyed overwhelming crowd response since its inception this past April. Part of its success, however, is the fact that although it is a perfect spot for an elegant lunch or dinner, it features multiple bars with different themes and specialties throughout the property – making it truly a “one-stop pub crawl” of sorts. From casual to more sophisticated, there is an experience for everyone at Marais’ several eclectic spaces for delicious eats and unique drinks. Here’s a helpful guide for planning, from outside to inside! The Plank Bar: One of the more casual hangouts “below deck” at Marais includes The Plank Bar. A Jean-Lafitte/pirateinspired sports bar on the lower level which melds with the restaurant’s New Orleans vibe, The Plank Bar offers drink specials throughout the week, as well as a variety of craft beers and food, from sandwiches to appetizers, in a very casual atmosphere which includes a couple repurposed, rustic-style doors as the bar tables. It’s a must to be there at dusk, too, as bats emerge at sunset from Pine Drive Bridge, and enjoy a $5 Bat-Tini or a $2 Bat Outta Helles lager! Make sure to visit Pepe the Plank Parrot, too! Dickinbach Biergarten: Just around the corner from The Plank Bar is what has been dubbed “Dickinbach,” an outdoor area which overlooks the water and has been created in a traditional German biergarten style. Owners Keith and Holly Lilley aim for authenticity throughout Marais, which is no different in Dickinbach – even the tables were sourced from an Oktoberfest in Wilke, Germany. The more family-friendly area is also adorned with Oktoberfest-inspired artwork, and includes fun games such as Jumbo Jenga, Connect Four, and corn hole. Benson Bar: Moving into the restaurant, then, guests are greeted by custom-made swings in the Benson Bar, a space which was inspired by the old industrial vibe of the Warehouse District of New Orleans. “A lot of people hang out here on these swings and really enjoy sitting and chatting for hours,” Lilley said. It seems easy to see why, as time can pass quickly while swinging, enjoying a premium whisky, scotch, or one of the many custom-made cocktails by expert bartenders, and taking in the beautiful bayou view.

The Terrace: Elevated above both The Plank Bar and Dickinbach, The Terrace offers a more of a cozy, warm outdoor atmosphere. Adorned with sparkling chandeliers, eclectic hanging swings, and zero-gravity swings around a 120-year-old oak tree, The Terrace has a beautiful panoramic waterfront view which pairs perfectly with a great bottle of wine and some of Marais’ New Orleans-inspired appetizers. “The sunsets are amazing out here, especially with our lighting,” Lilley added, making it an ideal date-night spot.

Bar Marais: Exploring further into the dining room area adorned with a variety of chandeliers and authentic New Orleans gas lamps, guests may enjoy a truly unique drink experience at a stylish 40s era-inspired bar in custom-designed barstools. Apart from premium scotch and whisky, Bar Marais is the only spot in Houston which offers traditional New Orleans absinthe service. “It is an herbal liquor famous around the world, made with anise seed and wormwood, with a licorice flavor,” Lilley said, noting that because it also contains trace amounts of the chemical compound thujone, it was often portrayed as a hallucinogen which caused its prohibition in different countries at various times in history. Absinthe service includes a dilution of the distilled spirit (anywhere from 90 to 148 proof) using three to four ounces of ice water and a sugar cube to sweeten and release the flavor of it. The process includes slowly dripping the water from authentic glass absinthe fountain dispensers over the sugar cube that has been placed on a perforated spoon – also especially for absinthe service – which has been set on the glass containing about an ounce of absinthe. “One can pick you up, but two would put you on the floor!” Lilley said. Bar Marais, with its Statuary marble lined bars, is also a great place to enjoy an expertly made martini or crafted cocktail by its expert bartenders. Bar 36: Last but not least, don’t forget to cross the parking lot from Marais to Bar 36! Located inside Dickinson BBQ, Bar 36 offers an impressive selection of hyperlocal Texas craft beers, many brewed just miles from the venue. The saddle-topped stools and cowboy/western décor add to the fun. Also owned by the Lilleys, both Bar 36 and Marais have various exciting pint night events and changing drink and food specials most nights of the week. So no matter your poison, Marais has you covered – both inside, and out, from casual to specialized ’40s-era elegance! Located at 2015 FM 517 Road East in Dickinson, Marais’ happy hour in general runs from Monday through Friday, offering $3 off their Social Starters, as well as drink specials which include $2 domestic drafts, $4 craft beers, and $5 margaritas, to name just a few. Be sure to stop by often (or call ahead) to check out the latest food and drink specials and events. This venue is an exceptional destination where one can truly have a one-stop pub crawl!

Texas Beer Enthusiast On Demand CO2 Delivery

Controversial Texas “TAPROOM BILL” (HB 3287) filed into law, impact TBD

The actual impact of Texas House Bill 3287 which became law last month when Governor Greg Abbott failed to veto it depends on who you talk to.

Proponents of the bill, including the Beer Alliance of Texas and Wholesale Beer Distributors of Texas groups, argue the bill prevents large multinational breweries from “gobbling up” Texas’ small craft breweries and having access to multiple taprooms across the state. Opponents of the bill, including the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, suggest the bill is an "extortion fee" benefiting distributors and will put a ceiling on the success for the 200+ craft breweries operating in Texas and will slow the future growth of what has become an important burgeoning manufacturing industry in Texas.

Texas Craft Brewers Guide on HB 3287 This is absurd over-regulation that will slow the growth of the craft beer industry in Texas and drive capital investment in breweries to other states. Put simply, this law is an embarrassment to the State of Texas. Craft beer is not a fad. The jobs, tourism, culture, and economic impact that Texas craft brewers create and support are real and important. One day soon, with your continued help, a majority of policymakers will awaken to these facts. Please stay tuned and stay engaged. We will need your continued support to change the status quo.

What is known is that any breweries producing 225,000 barrels of beer per year (a calculation that includes the amount of barrels from any affiliate brewery with a 25 percent or more stake in the company) will have to pay a distributor to deliver that beer — even if they're delivering it to on-site taprooms just yards away from where it's produced. Houston’s Karbach Brewing (AnheuserBusch), Grandbury’s Revolver Brewing (Miller-Coors) and Austin’s Independence Brewing (Heineken) were recently purchased by mega-breweries but will be grandfathered in allowing them to avoid paying distributors to deliver beer to their own tap rooms. Possibly more damaging for small breweries is a new limit that self-distributing breweries can only self-distribute a total of 40,000 barrels across all locations; anything above that has to be sold through a distributor. This will limit expansion for many Texas breweries if they want to keep their independence from the wholesale tier.

SOMETHING NEW - For the past several years, we have enjoyed the presence of Miss Kemah USA at various functions while out and about on the SCENE. Two weeks before this year’s event, yours truly was asked to provide photography services at this year’s pageant Not their studio glam work, rather their action shots. Watching how this event is pulled off was intriguing with an interesting tempo, flow and motivation. Congrats to the 2017 Miss Kemah USA, Stephanie Ludwig and to the 2017 Miss Kemah Teen USA Bryn Carden and to all the contestants across the Houston metroplex for being a part.

TRIBUTE BANDS - During the month of June, we covered three really good tribute bands: Escape Houston - A Journey Tribute, Texas Flood - A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Zepparella - A Led Zeppelin Tribute. This is the second time we’ve seen an Escape show This time at the Rock the Dock on a rare cool and dry breezy evening where this local act continued off from where we last saw them last year, doing what they do best, and that’s keeping the audience swooning. In my recollection, I believe this was the largest crowd I’ve ever seen at a Rock the Dock show, thus setting a new benchmark reference. I’m keeping an eye out on Escape. I suspect there will be lots more comEscape Houston @ ing from this group of Kemah Boardwalk musicians in the months ahead.

Texas Flood @ Scout Scout Bar was the location where we caught both Texas Flood and Zepparella. Chatting with the fans at the Texas Flood show, it was quick to reckon that these were true SRV fans and Texas Flood was their show. According to their website, “Texas Flood has become the premier Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute act in the nation. With guitarist Tommy Katona leading the way, they bring the raw high energy of music and stage presence that Stevie Ray himself had. They have had the privilege of traveling all over the country with their tribute act. It is not only a show, but a recreated experience of one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time. This is their loving tribute to the life and music of Stevie Ray Vaughan.” My thoughts? I had the blessings to have lived in Austin in the late ‘70s through mid ‘90s serving me as reference and was “very” impressed with how well Texas Flood totally scratched not only my SRV itch, but also provided the entire Double Trouble experience with the rolls of drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon handled convincingly well. One comment the drummer shared was how stifling the humidity was the night before at their Rock The Dock show. Their comment makes sense as they make Dallas their home. His second comment was despite having played over a thousand shows, that his drums never sounded better. Makes sense also knowing Scout Bar’s Sound Meister, Reuben Foster, was running the mix. Special shout out goes to Bad House who opened that night. It’s been less than a year since we first happened upon this local band from Bad House Houston’s Indus@ Scout trial Belt and they continue to answer the bell abely and with gusto when called upon to open for touring acts passing through the area. - Cont. on Page 33

Let It Rock: Cont. From Page 48 The band makes a meticulous effort to ensure they have all of the clothes as Bon Jovi-thentic as possible, from the necklaces and cowboy hats, down to the gold coat with fringe that Ritchie Sambora used to wear. And being Bon Jovi, Mangos said, is really one of the best parts of the act. “You get to dress up as your musical heroes! But it’s also learning the particular style of a musician, learning his style and understanding his style… just to understand that is one of the best things about performing a tribute to Bon Jovi. It’s asking yourself, ‘How do I bring this to life?’ You have to take yourself out of your shell, and make yourself think what that person was thinking when they were playing this guitar part, or this other aspect of the show.

THE SCENE

You have to be dedicated to the tribute itself,” Mangos said, who even builds his own guitars just for the show. “I love it, I just love it!” For those who grew up with Bon Jovi, Let it Rock! A Tribute to Bon Jovi is not to be missed; the nostalgia is guaranteed. “We want audiences to have the memories when they first heard these songs. That’s what we’re really driving for. To remember dancing to these songs at prom, to having their first beer, or their first kiss. We want you to walk out of there and remember those good times. We want you to be singing out loud, hands up in the air, and really

enjoy the show,” he said. Let it Rock! A Tribute to Bon Jovi will play the House of Blues Houston at 7 p.m. on July 8. They will perform at Hugh and Jeff’s Car Wash and Sports Bar & Grill in League City on July 15 at 8 p.m. along with Judgement Day…A Tribute to Whitesnake. LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35

Zepparella @ Scout The show I was least prepared for, yet enjoyed most was Zepparella, a four piece collection of all female talent from the San Francisco. These ladies did a fantastic job bringing back the Led Zeppelin experience. The last time and only time I saw a Led Zeppelin live show was back in 1974 where I got a floor stage view of the original band’s musical mastery. Scout Bar lets fans get “close,” and there was simply no faking it – Zepparella had it. Music Emeritus and guidance and navigation specialist, Isaac Stoddard, pointed out that these ladies were accomplished musicians in their own right – A quick surf of their bios confirms this quickly. One nice thing I like about this band are the bio pages each member maintains -– A great idea and worth checking into if you are a musician interested in getting noticed. Start off with their Facebook page and surf from there. The audience was not your typical metal crowd, rather more along the lines of critical music listeners of classic rock that were deafeningly quiet as the band first took the stage. This would change throughout the night as the band lit the night off with The Immigrant's Song. Reuben and Alex had the sound and lights dialed in perfectly, a treat to the ears and to the camera. Along with a their musical barrage on critical ears was a genuine stage presence winning over the audience throughout the night. Their Facebook page reports regulars notching 40, 50 over 100 shows, even traveling between states to see the shows. Based on a sample size of one show, I can clearly see why! COOL HANGOUTS - Summer’s officially here, and it’s time to run down my favorite spots on the SCENE with great air conditioning. You think? New on the beat this year is not a music venue but one of my favorite diners, the Classic Cafe in Seabrook where they serve the essential seafood, steaks, sandwiches, and good old fashioned comfort food. During brunch hour on hot balmy weekends, we enjoy eating in the bar and sharing the table with other like-minded diners, much like the way meal tables are shared amongst strangers in Europe, and catching a friendly “howdy” from the proprietor. Another fine place on the SCENE I enjoy when I’m in need to chill is Bakkhus Taverna - Especially on Mondays with their Steak Night specials. Bar Captain, Lance Cumpian, mixes up some of the finest drinks in the area which are sure to have you forgetting your day at the office and their food is always a treat. - Continued on Page 31

Local Music Spotlight:

Andrew Bateman

By Sarah Piña

For more than 15 years, solo artist Andrew Bateman has been playing his melodic mix of folk, contemporary, rock, blues, jazz – and even flamenco – in a style all his own. “I picked up the guitar in middle school, but it wasn’t until college that I really started playing the style I do now. I had a teacher that was a traditional Spanish flamenco player, so I took that and applied it to other songs from genres I grew up with, including country and metal,” Bateman said. “Now I’ll play everything from Metallica to ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ for fun, but in that style.” This style also includes a performance technique known as looping, where he builds each song and serves as the percussion, bass, rhythm, and of course, lead guitar, giving him the title of the “one-man band for the modern stage.” His experience – from opening for metal bands to playing hundreds of weddings and other special events – demonstrates his range of music and ability. “My music is what I would describe as upscale, but not uptight,” Bateman added. “My performances are personal and intimate, while it’s music that is easy to socialize in, but also nice to zero-in on and enjoy.” Originally from West Texas, Bateman now has two albums and is an established guitar instructor and studio contractor as well, part of his goal to constantly be involved in the surrounding community through doing what he loves. “I was such a bad student that it made me want to be an even better teacher,” said Bateman. “I love seeing that the students are learning and not even realizing it, because they are having so much fun.” Bateman performs at local restaurants including every first Friday at the Lighthouse Bar and Bistro at the South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center (see page 9 for more info on SSHR). For information on guitar lessons, call 832-457-5645 or visit www.andrewbateman.com.

Hourglass @ Cock-eyed Seagull

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 33 I celebrated summer solstice by stopping into the Cock-eyed Seagull, where they have what I believe is one of the best air conditioners and easy going style in the area. The Hourglass Trio were on stage that evening and were simply nailing it on projects they’ve been working on. It was an evening I wish my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, was there to enjoy. The evening’s lineup of Kevin and Mark Fenton, Claudia Hammond, and Greg Stephens has been putting in time on their vocal blend. I enjoyed more than several songs hearing not a “single” voice carrying the melody, but a combination of voices coming together for a voice much larger. This is an interesting group to watch as they’re often changing their instrument assignments and pairings throughout the evening. The band would play no more than two or three songs before rotating parts making for a considerable range of songs they can cover, broader than many cover bands are capable of offering. “Catchy” comes to mind when both Kevin and Greg play electric guitars on the same song – intertwining much reminiscent of Felder and Walsh. Heads up: In July will be Mark Fenton’s (aka “Coach”) 64th birthday party. Keep an eye out for this party, it should be a doozie.

John Del Toro Richardson @ Katie’s

SURE BET - I’m always interested in testing my theory that any time I catch a show at Katie’s in Bacliff, it is bound to be a good one. In June, I got to check out my theory again catching, for the first time for me, John Del Toro Richardson. Holy moly! What a show! Chatting with Bob Emmons about Del Toro, “You’ve got to Google this guy. He’s very popular in Europe, recently won several Houston music awards, he’s the real McCoy, and may be soon ready to be too big for us.” That alone was reason to pick up of Del Toro’s CD, Tengo Blues during set break, and enjoy a brief congenial chat with the musician who clearly doesn’t shy from busting a sweat to get his musical point across. The stage volume was perfect with simply a Blues Junior serving as the volume reference point for the entire band and the music was a masterful blend of classic R&B, with a dash of C&W, along and a splash of Latin laced through the licks. My theory still holds: Pick any night Katie’s has a live music happening, let Desiree and Brandy serve you up a refreshing cool drink and better yet, double up and bring an out-of-town guest. You’ll be very apt to catch one fine evening at Katie’s. Your guest will think you’re a genius, and remember, there’s never a cover.

HISTORY, RUM AND LIVE MUSIC - Newcomers to the area sometimes have trouble understanding why so many people in these parts enjoy running around as pirates. Well once upon a time, Jean Lafitte, a French pirate and privateer in the Gulf of Mexico in the early 19th century made this area his stomping grounds. You can still drive by one of his homes he had down in Galveston. Many of his band went on to leave descendants that like to come out of the woodwork every now and then which exactly is what we did in June at Railean Rum where they hosted a “pirate good time” with the one and only Bilge Pumps! The turnout for this event was incredible! Lafitte’s people are truly everywhere! The Bilge Pumps performed a full evening of classic pirate sea songs, shanties, and celtic music while the great staff at Railean Distillery’s Buccaneer Bar served up crazy pirate drink specials all night long. This month, I got to enjoy their refreshing Blue Parrot, their Texas Scorched Margarita (an eye-opening zinger), and their top-shelf, El Perico Anejo. Railean’s Buccaneer Bar places itself at the top of my Friendliest Places list. Check them out and put them on your list, too! - Continued on Page 30

Salsa Sundays @ Kemah Boardwalk

FOUND THE SALSA - I had enjoyed watching this form of dance in the Clear Lake area at Las Haciendas - a form of Latin dance that’s hot, sultry, rhythmically stylistic and carries on in popularity. I’ve been able to find two places to catch this cool form of dance for those interested. At the Volcano Room, their Wednesday Havana Nights and on Salsa Sundays at the main stage on the Kemah Boardwalk. Houston is about as far north of the equator as Rio de Janeiro is south. Seems like a large Salsa following is another shared trait. PATIO SEASON - Reading last month’s issue of The SCENE, Sarah Piña’s feature had me missing what was the weekly Kemah Jam – Wood and Wind’s Wednesday evening show at T-Bone Tom’s came just in the nick of time. We arrived in time to catch their Allman Brothers set, a fitting tribute to the recent passing of Gregg Allman only days earlier. Bobbie and Steve Revack were joined by John Clemons on bass and Steve Sticks on the kit. Guest performances that evening included Angie Emerson and a drop-in from the Kemah Jam days of old. The big trees covering the patio are gone, replaced with a giant palapa. Yet the good times with great food and live music carry on still...

IT’S A WRAP: Summer is here! Unfortunately, our professional basketball team went out before making it into the final round; while our baseball team has been something to watch! It’s amazing how well a team can do when the chemistry is clicking. I enjoyed sharing time with many of you this past month, catching up on your stories. It’s been somewhat of a crazy world out there, glad hearing how you’ve overcome the rash of the doozies, and tis time to aim our sights up high. With the heat on, it’s time to take the fun out to the water and if you’re inland, we’ve plenty of great places with a cool A/C, great cold drinks, and of course, great live music. Lakewood Brother-Sister Team Earn Chance to Compete at National Sailing Championships Lakewood Yacht Club youth sailors Paul and Celia Houston earned the opportunity to compete for the coveted Bemis Trophy. The sailors traveled to Rush Creek Yacht Club last month to race in the Chocopalooza Regatta, which was the Bemis Area F Qualifier. “After two days of very light winds in Dallas, Celia and Paul earned a second place at the Area F Qualifier for the Bemis Trophy,” explained Lakewood Sailing Director Watt Duffy. This trophy is a US Sailing National Championship for youth sailors in a double-handed boat. Sailors from all over the country pursue this trophy through regional qualifiers. This year non-LYC members Yumi Yoshiyasu and Kara Scully from Houston Yacht Club and Texas Corinthian Yacht Club finished first and LYC’s Celia and Paul Houston finished second. Both teams qualified to move on to the final round in New Jersey later this summer. Coach MacKenzie McGuckin coached five LYC teams at the eliminations and reported light oscillating winds that challenged the competitors consistency and resolve. “The competition is the highest honor for double-handed teams awarded by US Sailing and with it comes great recogni-

tion, added Duffy. “Many Olympic sailors begin their strive for gold competing for the Bemis Trophy.” Visit www.ussailing.org/racing/championships/youth/juniorchamps to follow along or learn more about the championship that will take place August 9-11. Best wishes to these fantastic sailors. Visit the LYC website at www.lakewoodyachtclub.com to learn more about the LYC Sailing Program or upcoming camps and sailing classes.

PAINTING ENCHANTMENT ARTS Featured Artist: Jackie Liddell

By Kelley Dawson

“I’ve been doing some type of art since I was old enough to hold a crayon. It’s a part of me,” expressed local artist Jackie Liddell. Her mother would allow her to paint on the kitchen walls. “I was little, about five years old and I painted murals on the walls,” Liddell said. She is grateful for her mother’s support of creativity. Liddell added, “I think it’s very important to express yourself.” She shares her advocacy of art with her family and her many students. Liddell has been a teacher for 39 years. Though retired, she continues her love of teaching through art workshops. Liddell stated she is always painting. She informed, “I’ll paint two or three at a time. I start one, then set it aside and work on another. It’s fun having them in different stages.” Liddell believes good design and composition are more important than technique. She disclosed for each painting she draws a thumbnail sketch and contemplates how best to present her image. She mentioned many artists are intuitive and delve into the canvas. “I think about it quite a bit. It’s the teacher in me,” declared Liddell. Her favorite medium is watercolor with mixed media. “I am known for my use of different papers,” told Liddell. She explained Masa paper is good for “wrinkle-type, cool textures.” She also uses Yupo paper and Gessobord for different looks. Additionally, Liddell likes to paint watercolor on paper that she prepares with acrylic. “I can wipe the watercolor off to get the right lighting especially for painting reflections,” related Liddell. She enjoys painting architecture, animals, sea life, and things that have a lot of texture. Liddell revealed “I think how to get the texture such as wrinkling paper for a waterfall.” It is easy to get lost in Liddell’s enchanting watercolor creations. The intriguing depths and textures balanced with stunning colors are completely captivating. Her meticulous design process is visible in each nuance. Liddell advised every painting tells a story. She paints only from “direct observation;” her life experience or a photo she took. “I see, experience, and sketch or take photos,” she said. Liddell thoroughly gets involved in her work. She professed, “It is self-satisfying. Painting has to be for me, not for commercial gain. When it works, and you know it’s coming together; it’s a euphoria, a happiness you get.” Liddell admitted if viewers like her work, it’s a real plus, and if they like it enough to purchase, that’s even better. Liddell appreciates when people admire her work. She shared, “It means they like me, because my paintings are such an expression of me. When Liddell isn’t painting; she is fishing. She stated, “If there is water, I am going to fish.”

South Shore Harbour Resort Continued From Page 9 Breakfast and lunch are served throughout the week at the Paradise Reef Restaurant, and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. a Champagne Brunch is offered for only $24 per person ($15 for kids; 5 and under eat free). “It is a buffetstyle brunch with traditional breakfast items, but we also have boiled shrimp, an omelet station where they are made to order, as well as a variety of pastries, desserts, and a featured entrée item each week such as beef or chicken,” Food and Beverage Manager Adam Folden noted. The Lighthouse Bar & Bistro is also not to be missed! Enjoy a full-service dinner overlooking the lake conceptualized by acclaimed Executive Chef Roland Kyburz. The dinner menu includes popular items such as the Lobster and Crab Risotto Cake and Seared Tuna with a Twist of Thai Crawfish. The bistro also features a Happy Hour which runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday through Thursday (with complimentary hors d'oeuvres on Thursdays), and live music every Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. “We feature a variety of music and mix it up, from a live saxophonist to a guitarist or piano player. Meanwhile, you can enjoy your dinner while watching the sunset, too, which is beautiful from right here in the bistro,” Folden said. Additionally, Folden has crafted a Signature Series of Wine Dinners, which feature a theme or region every other month on Thursday evenings. This current series showcases the five major growing regions in the world for wine. “For our wine dinners, Chef Kyburz prepares an incredible four-course meal specific to the theme, and they are paired with five different wines. The food is phenomenal, the wine is fantastic, there’s live music, and it’s fun and educational as well,” Folden said, noting that the next festive dinner on August 24 is currently accepting reservations and will be centered around the region of Bordeaux, France.

2017 Texas Outlaw Challenge

The 10th edition of the Texas Outlaw Challenge was bigger and better than ever, with more events, more venues, more participants and more spectators. But the biggest development was a change in location for the popular and dynamic National Shootout Championship event. After nine years of executing a safe and efficient shootout format in the open waters of Galveston Bay, organizers were granted exclusive access to the calmer, and more protected waters of Clear Lake by the cities representing jurisdiction on the lake. The result was a show of speed and power not seen on Clear Lake since the Unlimited Hydroplanes races of the mid 1980s.

DID YOU KNOW: Each of the 7 Cities touching Clear Lake approved a special No Wake Zone allowing 10th Annual Texas Outlaw Challenge to host The National Shootout Championship on Clear Lake.

New Look, New Experience at South Shore Harbour Resort By Sarah Piña Last July, South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center underwent a multi-million dollar renovation, the first of its kind since opening in 1988. The result? A fresh, exciting experience for visitors and those looking for a one-of-akind “staycation.” “There is definitely a renewed sense of energy and excitement. Our guests say that the hotel has a new vibe, a chic, classy feel,” yet it is still nautical and comfortable for those already familiar with the resort and conference center, General Manager Roy Green said. This “new vibe” can also be attributed to the exciting events happening all year long for hotel guests, including conferences and special events which take place in the more than 25,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space available for reservations, as well as package specials catering to families. These include everything from a “Family Fun in the Sun” package (which includes dive-in movies by the pool), to one especially for the ladies (a relaxing “Momcation” package, complete with a champagne brunch)— and even an upcoming live country concert series in the Fall! “This will be an inaugural concert series,” said Green. “It will make for a one-of-a-kind poolside concert. You’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful sunset while seeing some of country music’s biggest stars perform,” adding that booking early is recommended by calling the hotel or reserving online. Hotel room packages start at $158 for two guests, which include wristbands for VIP Seating and reception-style food poolside. The series will include Curtis Grimes and Jake Worthington (both of “The Abbi Walker Voice” fame) on August 18 and September 15, respectively, and award-winning singer/songwriter Abbi Walker on October 20. Additionally, the innovative upscale food and beverage offerings and events are also a great part of this fresh South Shore Harbour Resort experience. Though the beautiful pool, complete with a swim-up cocktail bar and full service food and beverage service is reserved for hotel guests and South Shore Harbour fitness club and marina membership holders, there are many places in the hotel that are open to anyone looking for a new spot for breakfast or lunch, a fun happy hour by the water, a girl’s night out, or an elegant date night. - Continued on Page 15
