Local Music Spotlight:

SataDaze

By Sarah Piña Recently, several news outlets have indicated that Houston is the most diverse metropolitan city in the U.S. This reflects in a variety of ways in the city’s culture – through its people, its food, and most definitely the music as well. Look no further than the seven-man reggae/rock/hip-hop band SataDaze for proof positive of a new music movement occurring as diverse populations begin to fuse together as they have in Houston. The self-described group that finds itself “between the City Lights and Gulf Coast Beach Vibes” has a current lineup that consists of Ivan Dobbs Davila (guitar/vocals), Trevor “The Tree” Tapani (lead vocals/songwriter), Adrian De La Garza (drums), Larry “The Lyricist” Hurtado (rap vocals), Noel Sánchez (aka DJ Cyde), Danny De La Garza (bass), and Taylor Lake (congos/bongos) as one cohesive group began playing together a little over a year ago.

Marty Friedman Wed., August 16 SCOUT BAR

“Trevor, Larry, and Adrian, as well as myself, began playing together some years ago in our early 20s,” said Davila. And it just sort of naturally formed from there.” Add in bass, bongos, rap, and even a DJ scratching old-school on turntables, and SataDaze was born. But wait, what was that – a DJ, too? “I told the band I wanted a DJ when we began playing together,” said Davila. “I’m a huge fan of groups like Incubus and Sublime… and what do they have in common? A DJ! And [DJ Cyde] is the best person I could have asked for,” he said. “Cyde has different scratches, a real old school style, always out there with vinyl,” Tapani added.

A Splash of Nashville: David Lee Murphy to Headline Inaugural Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival in Sept. By Sarah Piña Bay Area, get ready for a first-class, debut music event, as this fall, the cities of Kemah and Seabrook will host the first-ever Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival! Among the several exciting events that will take place beginning September 28 are songwriting showcases, as well as concerts featuring nationally-recognized acts. Festival headliners include Texas native Radney Foster, but will also deliver a big splash of the Nashville country music scene with acclaimed songwriter and performer David Lee Murphy, who will bring a one-of-a-kind experience to audiences at the festival.

“This festival will showcase the music industry from Texas and beyond. David Lee Murphy will definitely bring the Nashville experience, which will provide such an exceptional perspective with all of his success and experiences on the country music circuit,” said Jon Burns, founder of Poets & Pirates who hosts a weekly podcast of the same name with local artists, and who has also produced similar showcases in Texas.

NEW OPENING ALERT

The Boldthouse Coffee, Cabs and Beer Taps 2234 NASA Parkway in Seabrook

By Sarah Piña Three years ago, wine and beer industry veteran Miriam Lozano and her beau and business partner, Devin Boldt began drafting the concept for a fresh new wine pub in the Clear Lake area that they had envisioned for many years. Now having a family, they knew that starting a second venture meant longer days and fewer nights spent together. It was then that Devin, a full-time employee for NASA, didn’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call his long-time friend and Minnesota native Lucas Johnson to join the ride. “You can dream of something forever, but if you don’t have the support of others, then it’s less likely to become a reality. Devin and Lucas believed in it just as much as I did,” said Lozano, General Manager of The Boldthouse. As of press time, the trio was wrapping up the last few weeks of renovations, and preparing to open their doors for the first time to the public. Whereas much of the Bay Area offers several bars and club-like venues, The Boldthouse (pronounced "Bolt House") will offer a more laid-back lounge atmosphere for those looking to enjoy an evening out with great music, food, and conversation. “Here we will have a mellow atmosphere. This will be a place where you’re able to talk to friends, or have a place to go on a date and you can actually listen to your date with nice music that doesn’t overpower the conversation,” Lozano said, adding that the live music they will feature will draw from all over Texas and the country, adding to the eclectic, modern vibe. “We want to create a new experience for our guests, and have that experience lead them on an adventure – and that comes from the international wines and beers we have carefully selected and perfectly paired with fresh food that doesn’t come out of a plastic bag or a freezer,” Boldt said. "It’s about finding the best beers and the best wines. It’s not just about Napa wines; it’s about tasting wine from all over the country and the world, from Arizona to Portugal,” he emphasized. The selection of 20 beers from their custom-made taps and 30+ wines will provide exactly that, for every level of craft beer and wine expertise. “We will cater to everyone from wine connoisseurs to those newer to wine and craft beer. Those who are more experienced will have a variety of new things to try, and at the same time we really want to help guide and teach those willing to step out of their comfort zone, especially the younger demographic who are just getting into trying more complex wines and beers,” Lozano said, adding that beer flights and wine flights, as well as bartender selections of the week, will also be featured. Along with this fresh new selection of beer and wine comes a thoughtfully designed, innovative food menu to pair with them by Boldt himself. “We’ll have several small plates and tapas, with new recipes that I’ve developed, and new takes on dishes like a traditional Cuban picadillo sandwich, for example, which I wrap in lettuce for a nice crunch as a contrast. There will also be a special featured chef’s item, which will change monthly. But most importantly, everything on the menu will be made from fresh ingredients,” Boldt said. - Continued on Page 46

The Boldthouse: Continued From Page 47 And all that The Boldthouse Soft Grand Opening: has to offer, from the wine and Friday, August 11 beer, to the music and food, Grifters and Shills can be enjoyed in a modern venue with an industrial vibe that has been conceptualized, custom-built, painted, and created by Lozano, Boldt, and Johnson, from the beautiful enclosed wooden patio and custom-built wooden tables to the bar itself in the two-story building (formerly Rotana Café). “This has really been a joint effort of friends and family. Devin and Miriam had a vision I really believed in,” said Johnson, Bar Manager of The Boldthouse and a communications professional who made the move from Minnesota to partner in this new venture. “We are all very excited about The Boldthouse. It’s going to be the place to be. It’s all about the fun, modern atmosphere, where people want to come and stay,” he said. The Boldthouse, located at 2234 NASA Parkway in Seabrook, will have their soft opening on Friday, August 11 at 4 p.m., and the local duo known as Grifters and Shills (John and Rebecca Stoll) will begin performing at 5 p.m. for the big occasion! As of press time, anticipated hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., and from noon to 2 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday (subject to change). Be sure to visit The Boldthouse this month, and welcome them to The SCENE! Cheers!

The three-day festival is packed with beer, cheer, and plenty of foam-filled events happening each day over the Labor Day weekend. Friday night, September 1 kicks off at 7 p.m. with the spirited Nach-Yo Ordinary Tequila Tasting event featuring a range of high-quality tequila-tasting and plenty of salt and nachos for all. Frivolity abounds at the popular BrewMasters Friday Night Pub Crawl at 8 p.m. where guests can climb aboard a festive party bus each of which is hosted by a brew brain and tour some of Galveston’s coolest bars. Saturday, September 2 is all about craft beer, and the innovative breweries who make it happen. This tour provides a rare opportunity to meet some of the most successful and emerging breweries in the state. Guests will enjoy featured selections with each brewery offering a “Taste it First” selection in a small group and intimate environment with some of the most passionate and skilled brewers in the industry from 11:30 – 12:45 p.m. On Saturday afternoon, the ultimate BrewHaHa Grand Tasting begins with the chance to sample some of the best beer in the world, over 400 of them to be exact. Yes, you can “Have your beer and eat it, too.” The Art Institute of Houston will present several cooking demonstrations showcasing how to cook with beer. And finalists in the infamous Bad Ass Beard Contest, presented by Free Beer Friday, will see if their mustache, goatee, and beard made the final cut. BrewMasters goes out with a bang on Saturday and Sunday night with Beach, Brews, and Bands at Moody Garden’s Palm Beach with a live concert each night at Palm Beach. To top off the foam-filled weekend, don’t miss the Brew-B-Que, Sunday September 3 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. featuring smokin’ hot smokehouse specialties, live music and, of course, plenty of brews. Meet Rocky Stubbs from the infamous Stubb’s Barbecue empire, which started in 1968 when C.B. Stubblefield, “Stubb,” opened his first restaurant in Lubbock, Texas. Over the course of his life, Stubb perfected the art of barbecue, including making the sauces, marinades and rubs that today bring legendary Texas flavor to homes everywhere. Stubb was well known for his trademark smile and infamous line… “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m a cook.” Make it a destination weekend. Set in Galveston’s tropical Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center, with special events at various venues around the island, BrewMasters breaks out the barrels and serves up foam-filled perfection all weekend long. Tickets range from $25-$85. For more info on the festivities, visit http://www.brewmastersbeerfest.com/

FEATURED BARTENDER:

How long have you been a bartender + How long at Studio 80: I've been bartending since I turned 18, so that makes 8 years now. I was a part of the opening team here at Studio 80 back in April.

CODY

What do you love about working at Studio 80? I love the atmosphere and how everything from the music videos to the decorations makes you nostalgic for the ‘80s! My coworkers also play a huge part, one of the best staffs I've been a part of. YOUR favorite day of the week to work at Studio 80 & why? It's gotta be Saturday nights when the dance floor is overflowing with people having the time of their lives!

Studio 80: 803 Nasa Road 1, Webster The most rewarding part of your job (emotionally)? Probably the connections and relationships you build over the years. I’ve made so many good friends and have learned tons from meeting so many diverse people.

Top 3 drinks you recommend to customers at Studio 80? One of our bartenders here makes something called a Tori bomb, and they're quite delicious! I make a good martini with Ciroc redberry, but if you want to experience Studio 80 the right way, get a bottle of Strawberry Hill Boonesfarm.

5 words that describe you: Extroverted, ambitious, goofy, passionate, charismatic... (according to friends)

Do you have a Signature drink? I like to have people challenge me with a color and a flavor for me to make them a martini with. It gives me a chance to be a little creative.

Favorite thing about the Bay Area? There's something for everyone. And I grew up in the area, so I like reminiscing about how much things have changed since I was a kid.

Are there any new drinks you're excited about? I'm always excited to see new craft beers and/or new vodka flavors

What do you love about Bartending? I love the fast-paced and high-energy nature of the whole service industry and the fact that things are constantly changing. Definitely never a dull moment.

What do you do when not at work? (Hobbies?) When I'm not working, you can usually catch me on a stage singing karaoke somewhere; otherwise, I'm a big homebody. I enjoy spending time on the couch with my dog and my boyfriend watching movies or playing video games.

Who inspires you? The first person to pop into my head is my little sister Jessica. She's one of the coolest, most intelligent, and driven people I’ve ever met.

Grand Funk Railroad in Baytown

WE’RE AN AMERICAN BAND Each year on Independence Day, the city of Baytown puts on a free concert, for it’s patrons on the grounds of Lee College, and year in - year out, always manages to pick great bands covering the widest spread of genres like no other event. This year, we caught the July 3rd shows which included the Mambo Jazz Kings opening for Grand Funk Railroad, instantly scoring “over the top” mention. Many of you have enjoyed the Mambo Jazz Kings, a blistering 14 piece band and may not know they’ve been together for over 32 Mambo Jazz years. Their motto “Have Kings in Soul, Will Travel” goes well Baytown with their purpose of “makin you shake that thang.” With the setting sun shining down hard onto the lawn, the MJKs was able to warm the crowd up even more with a solid 90-minute set of non-stop heat, which caught the notice and respect of the headliner band taking in the show backstage. Speaking of the headliner band, the last time I caught a Grand Funk Railroad show was in 1975 and this year’s show rocked the house every bit as strong this July. Original band members Don Brewer and Mel Schracher was able to fill the shoes left by former frontman Mark Farner bringing in “The Professor” Tim Cashion on keys, former KISS member Bruce Kulick on lead guitar, and hall of famer Max Carl as frontman and lead vocals. I’ll ‘fess that while researching this show and watching some of the bootleg YouTubes, I was wondering if this band still had it. Turns out the recordings were pretty cheesy with cell phone quality mics and video capture - The band and the Baytown crowd meshed well and the show sizzled. Different, too, with this and the show I saw in ‘75 was how well GFRR reached out and engaged the audience. Typically after these holiday shows, the audience tends to go home, but this year, the postshow crowd simply lingered on not leaving, enjoying the show ringing in their head... Me too! - Continued on Page 35

SataDaze: From Page 48 DJ Cyde’s addition to the mix not only makes SataDaze’s sound more unique, but brings a true “H-town” hip-hop influence to it as well. “We can’t help but blend all of this in when we make music. I mean, we enjoy reggae music, but we’re from Houston, with a huge hip-hop scene, too, so it comes organically,” said Tapani, noting Houston’s DJ Screw as a big influence as well. Since then, this innovative sound has held audiences captive all over Texas to rising success in a short period of time, touring several cities in the Lone Star state, and even playing a recent show with reggae legends the Wailers. “We had to go get it – because no one was going to give it to us,” DJ Cyde said. Davila agreed. “[Our passion] is a collective thing. Our first gig was at Zone 504, then shortly after we played Scout Bar. The EZ Vibe Network (an online network for local artists, venues and

community projects) has played a huge part as well. And as we just kept being asked back, it’s sort of gone down like dominoes,” he said. As for the lyrics and music itself, the band is constantly challenging themselves to evolve with new originals. “We started putting together songs I had written, and creating new stuff, and we’ve been growing as artists ever since, because for many of us this is our first band,” said Tapani, who writes many of the songs for the band. This, the band believes, is a big part of their success, along with a passion for not only the music, but the dynamic shows they have become known for. “We don’t like to limit ourselves. We go up on the stage and have a good time and give our all – otherwise, why are you up there?” Cyde said. So what can someone expect from a SataDaze show if going for the first time? “ENERGY!!” said the band, collectively. And a high-energy performance infused with reg-

36

gae, hip-hip, rock, and more to appeal to many is exactly what one can expect from a SataDaze show. “Pretty much everyone is going to like something we’re doing, from hip-hop to the guitar,” said drummer De La Garza. “Come and join the party!” SataDaze’s future plans include an album and out-of-state tours. Their music is available at www.satadaze.com, though more live shows are coming! SataDaze will next play Acadia Live in Houston with other local reggae favorites InDaSkies on August 13 at 6 p.m.; and in the Clear Lake area, they will join Through the Roots and King Baby on Sunday, August 27 at Scout Bar at 7:30 p.m. So go join the party, tell the guys hello, and tell them The SCENE sent you!

ABOVE L TO R: That Captain & Christopher Morphis @ The Volcano Room

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 37 ROLLING WITH MY FRIENDS…” A couple months ago, we caught the return of J-Bone White and Matthew Beard at Easy Street Lounge and what was a great homecoming evening. In July, the story gets better with the entire band of That Captain along with Marc Borde, Gregory Moreno, and Blake Plsek joining Beard and White. The band? Check…. Their Village? Check… Christopher Morphis in the room painting? Check.... The Volcano Room was the location for this long awaited homecoming and I recommend for their next return visit home in November, an outdoor festival setting be considered… By my measure, That Captain has made it to Step 8 on the FreePressHouston.com list of what it takes for a band to “make it” in the world of live music. I expect these cats will last the long haul. IN SEARCH OF THE GREATEST A/C IN CLEAR LAKE - I’ll ‘fess... This time of year, a place with a great air conditioner goes along well with live music, and in July, surveyed such spots: Railean Distillery, Cock-eyed Seagull, Noah’s Ark and Katie’s. In the month of July at Railean Rum, we enjoyed what is perhaps the friendliest place on the planet, partook of their awesome refreshing Agave beverages, and enjoyed an evening of Billy Gilbert on the stage. Billy is one of those talents that played the Houston area in his younger years, took a break to raise his family, recently retired from his daytime job and has been returning to the musical scene with his voice well-preserved and Billy Gilbert playlist packed with obscure @ Railean Rum classic covers making for a fantastic evening of enjoyment and intelligent conversations. If you’re out in the San Leon area, stop by Railean Distillery where their AC can hit 70 degrees in the heat of the day and let their friendly staff serve you up a cool one. You’ll be glad you did. We stopped into the Cock-eyed Seagull a couple of times in July, where their AC is so cold, an occasional patrons will dash to their cars during band breaks fetching jackets and sweaters. In July, we joined up with the merry monger seagulls for the Sandra Hamilton Benefit and for Mark Fenton’s When I’m 64 Party. - Continued on Page 33

Ol’ Mothers takes on new owners, changes By Shawn Domingues Devastated by the news when they heard their favorite bar might be closing, and determined not to let that happen, Devin and Charlene Bendon and Kenneth Crump decided to partner up and keep the bar alive. New ownership, new menu items, and new hours, but it’s still the same Ol’ Mothers the regulars have come to know and love. One noticeable change is the new dart room. Moving the pool table from one side of the bar to the other offered more space to add new dart machines and give dart players the extra elbowroom needed, especially on Wednesday and Saturday nights when Ol’ Mother’s dart tournaments are in full swing. Speaking of elbowroom, the bar was extended by three feet allowing room for more guests to sit at the bar and enjoy the new menu items, and you can even put your elbows on the table, ahem… bar. The restrooms also received a much-needed makeover with new paint and tile in the men’s room, and painted murals for the ladies’ room and added purse hooks for the ladies’ stalls. New menu items have been added, like Chicken Quesadillas, Fried Mushrooms, Sliders and, for the more adventurous carnival-loving foodie, they now have Fried Twinkies, served with powder sugar. New Texas beers have been added to the taps, and there are new additions to the drink menu as well. For instance, new flavored rums and vodkas like the pineapple, mango and banana rums that make up their new signature drink called Ol’ Mother’s Three Rum Punch. New promotions have been added, like Industry Night on Monday nights, with Happy Hour specials from open to close, free jukebox and free pool, and some of the original promotions have changed. For example, guests can now enjoy live acoustic music on Tuesday’s Steak Night from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Steaks are served with a baked potato, one side and choice of one beer or a house wine for $15. Taco Tuesday is now Taco Thursday, which is Karaoke Night as well. Wednesday night is Wing Night, with 75¢ wings and $3.50 well drinks. Live bands continue to take the stage on Friday and Saturday nights. Ol’ Mother’s has new hours. Open Sunday through Thursday noon to 2 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Although there are some minor changes taking place in the near future, for the most part, Ol’ Mother’s will remain the same as it was when the new owners were regular customers who truly loved their neighborhood bar.

ABOVE L TO R: Sandra Hamilton’s Benefit @ Cock-eyed Seagull

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35 The turnout for Sandra’s Benefit was over the top and the Seagull staff put on a true dandy for this worthy cause. The bands were in top form and the surprising fundraising event of the day went to the Chicken Sh*t Bingo pulling in over $270 a round. Great job to the Seagull staff and to all who came out to support this worthy cause!

I almost missed out on Mark “Coach” Fenton’s 64th Birthday Party as the show at the place earlier in the evening ran longer than expected. Luckily for me, I was able to catch Hourglass’s final set which was dialed in perfect and sounding great. During the show, I got to Hourglass @ noticing Cock-eyed Claudia Seagull Hammond slinging a new guitar “It’s a Guild 00, much easier to play on then my old full size Guild, it’s the same style of guitar that Eric Clapton plays, and I got a good deal for it a Danny’s!” Me? I thought it sounded lighter and brighter - Refreshing! - Continued on Page 32

ABOVE L TO R: Tyrone “The Hammer” Stewart @ Noah’s Ark

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 33 NOAH’S ARK - We were curious about the air conditioning at Noah’s Ark, got sidetracked watching the Kemah fireworks show from the parking lot and heard what sounded like juke box music playing - All sorts of genres and all sounding cleanly like the originals, so a trip inside was in order. Upstairs on the palapa covered deck, we found Tyrone “The Hammer” Stewart and his band from Galveston playing practically everything from funk, disco, rock and country – All of it... Not exactly factory air conditioning, but we did enjoy a pleasant Galveston Bay breeze with the full house. BUDDY WHITTINGTON - The first time I crossed paths with this Hurst, Texas musical virtuoso was when I was assigned a seat next to him on an airplane ride to Los Angeles in the late ’90s - I was seeking a new future and he was on his way to join up with John Mayall for a series of west coast shows. He didn’t pack along a guitar which at that time, I thought odd. I reckoned he must’ve been good. Buddy reappeared on my radar showing up on the lineup at Katie’s (of course), and I finally got a chance to catch his show in July. You can tell a lot about a band by who you see in the crowd and on that night at Katie’s, the house had more than several lead guitar players from around the area. Desiree and Brandy kept the beverages flowing and the music was perfect. According to Whittington's bio “Though no other family member played music, there was always plenty of music at home. Probably the biggest influence in Bud’s musical makeup was the record collection of his big sister, encomBuddy passing everything from British Invasion to R&B hits Whittington of the day.” One things special about the show was how Bud would spend a brief moment intro@ Katie’s ducing each song, who it was written by, and mention of some authentic trivia before launching into the song. It wasn’t your straight-up blues but more on the rock end of the spectrum with bridges, interludes, back and forth solos -- an eclectic song list! Buddy and the band of Mouse Mayes on 2nd lead guitar, Wayne Six on bass, and Randy Schez on drums, possessed an impressive stage presence with only the vocals mic’d and with both guitar players with little more than 10” speaker amps. Mouse and Buddy have been playing together since ‘72 and separating themselves with complementing rhythms while sharing the 20 to 20,000 Hz audio spectrum. Their songs included plenty of fun back and forth musical interluding and bridge work, making for one refreshing night of musical enjoyment. - Continued on Page 31

ABOVE L TO R: Galactic Empire @ Scout Bar • Nightbird @ Kemah Boardwalk • Let It Rock & Judgement Day @ Hugh & Jeff’s Carwash

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 32 TRIBUTE BANDS - The popularity of tribute bands has been on the rise it seems. With a focus on not reinterpreting but to relive the “original experience,” the focus is not just in terms of audio and imagery, but also recreating the original persona. During the month of July, we took in four different tribute bands, Let It Rock - A Tribute to Bon Jovi, Judgement Day - A Tribute to White Snake, Night Bird - A Tribute to Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, and Galactic Empire - A Tribute to Star Wars.

Let It Rock @ Hugh & Jeff’s Carwash

The first two, Let It Rock & Judgement Day, we caught at Hugh & Jeffs. Both of these bands have been together for a relatively short time and assembled from a cadre of seasoned and talented Houston rock & rollers and scored well technically in the audio category. I had heard Judgement Day play earlier in the year at the Joe Palermo Memorial and knew these guys were capable of ripping it and getting the audience swooning. Both of these bands paid tribute to groups well-known for their prancing stage antics in monster-size arenas. I’m looking forward to catching these two again on the big stage with festival/arena audiences. Nightbird has been a band I’ve been following for awhile and in July, had the chance to catch them out in the natural light setting sun at the Kemah Boardwalk’s Tribute Band Tuesdays. I really like how this band scores persona points and the fan lines seeking photo ops with the groups during intermission is a testimony to their presentation. Nightbird @ Nightbird gets checkmarks in many of the the FreePressHouston.com’s Kemah list categories. A band worth seeing! Boardwalk

The surprise tribute band for perhaps the entire year thus far has to go to Galactic Empire at Scout Bar. Chatting with the staff, nobody was exactly sure how well this all-instrumental group with no vocals would go over on a Monday night, wondering what their boss Thomas Wilson had in mind. This triple lead guitar band simply ripped it with a sizzle and dazzle I’d place in the Trans Siberian Orchestra category in an up close and personal scale in a setting only available at Scout Bar. A special shout out to Alex Slay for the great light show with a selection and synchronization that put this interesting show waaaaaay over the top! David L. Murphy: From Pg. 48 An Illinois native, Murphy spent ten years writing and performing in various venues in Nashville before his first big break as a songwriter in the mid-’80s, when Reba McEntire recorded "Red Roses (Won't Work Now)" for her album Have I Got a Deal for You (MCA Records). Eventually, Reba’s producer signed him to the same label, where he went on to record three albums, including his platinum-selling album Out with a Bang in 1995 that spawned the hits "Dust on the Bottle" and "Party Crowd;” it also became the bestselling debut album by a male country artist that same year. Songs from this album were also included in the motion picture soundtracks of Eight Seconds (starring Luke Perry as a bull riding champion) and Black Dog (starring Patrick Swayze, Randy Travis, and Meatloaf). He then decided to focus on songwriting for other artists, and has since become one of Nashville’s most in-demand songwriters. “Many of the names you know today, so many of those country music stars have recorded his songs,” Burns said. “The Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival will give country music fans the unique opportunity to hear all of these songs originally written

and composed by David Lee Murphy. It’s always a very cool experience to hear hit songs performed by their original creator,” he added. The list of artists who have recorded Murphy’s Grammy and American Country Music Award-nominated songs reads like a virtual “Who’s Who” of country music stars: Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Brooks and Dunn, Blake Shelton, and Jason Aldean (with his megahit “Big Green Tractor,” no less), to name a very few. In many of these cases, including Bryan and Aldean, these songs established them as topselling acts and became their first top Billboard charting songs as well. Needless to say, country music fans and up-and-coming musicians and songwriters alike are all in for a treat when Murphy hits the stage at the festival. “During David’s set, audiences will also get a chance to not only hear the originator of some of their favorite songs perform them, but hear some ‘behind-the-scenes’ stories, such as how the songs came to be, or his inspiration for them,” Burns said. David Lee Murphy will perform in the Kemah City Parking Lot on Saturday, Sep-

tember 30. Tickets to this exclusive Nashville experience are limited! Head to www.galvestonbaysongwriters.com to clench $35 tickets for reserved seating (in the first six rows, great for those who wish to closely listen) or $20 (ideal for more casual festival revelers). A very limited number of all-inclusive VIP tickets (for all ticketed concerts, preferred parking, and more) are also available. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime evening at the Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival!

Loose Notes: From Page 31 IT’S A WRAP - The month of July burned like a fast fuse mortar, perhaps too fast for my liking. There was lots of really excellent live music to enjoy and we were pressed to cover what all we could. Throughout the month, we got to catch up with many of you out there partaking of The SCENE. All-in-all, things are looking up on many fronts with our baseball boys of summer are enjoying a nice lead, resting injuries and hopefully will be well-positioned for a chance to play in the final game of the year. Football training camps will be underway, our basketball team has been making some interesting trades with promising outcomes. On other fronts, oil prices appear to have stabilized and rumblings of a return of aerospace stir the air. According to the almanac, the days are getting shorter which means cooler weather lies ahead and school is around the corner. But before that happens, ‘tis time to head out onto the water, time to catch some good live music, and partake of the great place we have here, out on the SCENE. See you out there!!!

LYC Releases Harvest Moon Regatta Notice of Race Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) to host the 31st Annual Harvest Moon RegattaÂŽ October 5-8. "Registration is now open for the 2017 Harvest Moon Regatta," says HMR Regatta Chair Paul Dunphey. "The notice of race (NOR), registration link and other relevant information can be found at www.harvestmoonregatta.com." The entry fee is $180 plus a Port A City Marina Docking /Rafting Fee based on length overall of your vessel. U.S. Sailing members receive a $10 discount. See NOR for details. "This 150-mile offshore regatta from Galveston to Port Aransas has become a favorite tradition among sailing enthusiasts," says LYC Fleet Captain Rex Bettis. Open to all serious as well as non-competitive sailors; the regatta will begin with multiple starts on the afternoon of Thursday, October 5 in front of Galveston's Pleasure Pier, where

spectators can watch the action before driving down to Port Aransas to enjoy the numerous festivities. Previous HMRs have had more than 200 participants which amounted to close to 2,000 crew and guests descending on the Port Aransas City Marina. Postrace activities include the not-to-miss, Saturday afternoon Welcome Sailors Bacardi Rum Party, sponsored by original race sponsor Bacardi Rum. Camaraderie over catered bar-be-que and refreshing beverages, followed by a lively awards ceremony make for a fun and memorable evening. Lakewood Yacht Club Members Dominating East Coast Sailing Circuit Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) members Chris and Karen Lewis have been displaying their sailing prowess on their J/44 Kenai along the east coast sailing circuit. Kenai's signature Texas Flag is hard to miss on the horizon. In a record-breaking heat, the Lewis' along with LYC crew members Al Goethe, Bill Zartler and Mike McGagh, won the IRC2 Class and took third overall in the IRC Fleet in the "Granddaddy of Ocean Races," the 37th biennial Marblehead to Halifax race on July 9. Kenai also took home the coveted Chelsea Clock Trophy for bestcombined results in the Marblehead to Halifax and Annapolis to Newport races. Kenai placed second in the IRC2 Class in the Annapolis to Newport Race. Together with the Lewis', Zartler and J.D. Hill crewed Kenai to a win first out of the bay but were narrowly beaten by Orion, which was navigated by Libby Greenhalgh, who was also navigator for the all-women Volvo Ocean Race Team. Kenai also won best combined score for Annapolis to Newport and Newport to Bermuda races. In the 163rd Annual New York Yacht Club Regatta, the boat was switched to the One-Design configuration, and the Lewis' and their talented LYC crew of Susan and J.D. Hill, McGagh and Kevin Hayes won the J/44 Class, competing against six identical J/44s. The J/44s held their North American Championship as part of the Block Island Race Week. Kenai won the event in dramatic fashion making up a deficit of 5 points on the last day of racing and finishing in a tie. Kenai took the win over Challenge IV because she had more first-place wins. Earlier this year, in only their second Southern Ocean Racing Conference event, the Lewis' took First Place in ORC in the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race. They also won the best performance award for any boat over 25 years old. The team made up of local and east coast sailors finished 27 minutes ahead of the second-place finisher.

Along this journey they meet eight of the most unusual characters, including a cannibal who speaks German and a furry yeti who wants to be loved. This play is just too much fun to be had in one night of theatre!”

Quilt For The Moon: Continued From Page 19 Each 18-by-30-inch quilt is unlike any images from a typical “granny” quilt. The pieces are multimedia art on an astronomical level. Referred to as fiber art, the quilts incorporate handdyed materials, markers, ink, paint, free-motion sewing, machine stitching, and even found objects. Thread painting is used for intense details and shading. Three dimensional layers and objects such as buttons, beads, stones, plastics, and lace generate rich textures. Jones stated several of the art quilts will be a part of the Smithsonian’s new Apollo Gallery for the 50th Lunar Landing Anniversary. She featured one of the fiber art portraits of Captain James Arthur “Jim” Lovell, Jr. sewn by Ellen Icochea and Jayne Gaskins. Jones shared the quilt contained seven to eight layers of thread painting necessary to create the desired depth. The finished product resembles a photograph. The life-like quality had many guests exclaiming, “It looks just like him.” Regarding the installation, WPC Historian Allton expressed, “Artistically, it blows you away.” Church member Sylvia Kinzler, wife of the late NASA Engineer Jack Kinzler (known for creating the Moon Flagstaff and saving Skylab) declared, “It’s fantastic. It gives me duck bumps.

I’m impressed and thrilled art is a part of our church.” The deep connection of the area housing and employing numerous in the space program enhances the already emotive woven masterpieces. The evocative exhibit showcases thoughtprovoking art quilts that truly take the viewer on many journeys through time, and space, memories, and beyond. Take a journey to the Fly Me To the Moon art quilt exhibit open to the public August 8, 10AM-1PM at Webster Presbyterian Church 201 West NASA Pkwy. and read more at www.websterpresby.org/VisualArts. Q UILT F OR THE M OON By Kelley Dawson A serendipitous art talk and exhibit recently took place in Webster, Texas. Fiber artist, Susanne Jones sent out an art quilt challenge themed after the space program and anything lunar; titled Fly Me To the Moon. Her request resulted in a global response with 179 quilts made by 130 artists from eight countries. One of the quilts “Lunar Communion” created by Michelle Flamer depicts Buzz Aldrin and the Lunar Chalice given to him from Webster Presbyterian Church (WPC). It is not well-known that on July 20, 1969 Aldrin partook Communion prior to taking his first steps on the moon. WPC celebrates the Lunar Communion the closest Sunday to July 20 each year. It seemed only fitting to have the Fly Me To the Moon art quilt installation at the church housing the same Lunar Chalice. “It is appropriate that [the show] is here. They are connected to the space program and have had several astronaut members. The connection is so special,” said Jones. As curator, Jones led an art talk at WPC. She told of the 61 quilts on display and highlighted works that affected her. She also detailed her own art quilt Stuart Roosa: Space Seeds show-

ing the Command Module Pilot of Apollo XIV and “moontrees” grown from seeds he took to the moon. Diane Kane, with the church’s visual arts program spoke as well. She affirmed the fortuitous show in her speech retelling a dare by the church Minister, Keith Uffman, for a “moon shot.” She defined a moon shot as an “ambitious, exploratory event.” Church historians Judy Allton and Pat Brackett explained their personnel connections with several of the quilts. Additionally, two artists in attendance, Wendy Starn and Bobbe Nolan, described their fiber art entries.

BRUNCH and BREAKFAST Guide: Part II By Shawn Domingues Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but on the weekends, a strong case can be made for brunch as the most important meal of the week. Otherwise known as “breakfast without the alarm,” brunch can be the perfect way to start the day on those lazy weekend mornings when the night before might have lasted a little too long or getting some extra zzz’s is a priority. Whether you are ready to start your day early in the morning or a little closer to lunch, the Clear Lake area has many delicious breakfast and brunch options to choose from and these local area restaurants go above and beyond to tantalize the taste buds and offer a little “hair of the dog” to wash it all down:

And for those less experienced with sushi? No problem! MichiRu’s knowledgeable staff is there to help. “You can come here and not know anything about sushi, or have a preconceived notion of what sushi is, and our expert servers or chefs can guide you to something you like. I’ve had friends who have come in and told me they did not like sushi, and a few months later, they’re eating sashimi. It’s all about having an open mind, and these experts who can lead you to things you never thought you would enjoy,” Zinn said. With such a following that is only growing, it should come as no surprise then that MichiRu is now celebrating several years of success, which they will extend to their guests at the end of this month. “Our 8-year anniversary is on Sunday, August 27. On this day, for every $50 spent, the customer will receive a $25 gift card – and there is no limit,” Zinn said. MichiRu also has a rewards program year-round. It is free to join, and for every dollar spent, guests collect points, which are later redeemable for discounts on their check. MichiRu (Webster) is located at 20911 Gulf Freeway (near Cinemark 18 Theatres) and is open Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.; and Sunday noon to 10 p.m., with lunch specials available from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. So head down to MichiRu to check out the latest custom creations by Chef Zhuo and enjoy some of the best sushi and Asian fusion cuisine the area has to offer. Be sure to wish them a happy 8th anniversary and tell them THE SCENE sent you!

Anti-Pub Grub (Scotty’s On The Bay): From Page 10 You can come to the bar for a date night, get lost in relaxation at a table away from people, have a conversation with other bar patrons or sit outside and enjoy the outdoors,” Sexton said, “We have something for everyone.” They always have creative and fun drink and/or food specials and there is always something new to try. They even take requests from guests, ask for the Duck & Dumplins or the Chicken Tikka Masala. Must Haves: DUCK WINGS (like chicken, but way better! Tossed in their in-house honey sriracha soy glaze and jalapeño ranch); GROWN UP GRILLED CHEESE (Texas toast, bacon, brie, American, gruyere, apple, and apricot preserves with fries); DUCK BLT (house-smoked duck breast, apricot mayo, BLT, red onion and fried avocado with fries); KOREAN BBQ PORK TACOS (shredded pork, crispy potatoes, cilantro, pickled onion and hoisin sriracha mayo). VOLCANO ROOM (4650 E. NASA Pkwy, Seabrook): This island lounge serves crafted cocktails, wine, beer and fancy bar bites. As day turns to night, the energy increases with live music and/or DJs 5 days a week. Volcano also features Signature Mac-N-Cheese a bar-cade room complete offerings (The Cartel) with pinball, various unique arcades, and two brand new skeeball machines that are free to play all day and night on Sundays. Must Haves: Various mac-n-cheese offerings (Monday Night Special $6) made with their own béchamel sauce of gruyere Volcano Dip and asiago cheeses with a hint of sriracha, folded into cooked medium-sized shell

pasta. Guests have the option of choosing from one of their signature mac-n-cheese menu items like The CARTEL (topped with chorizo, creamy queso blanco, and chopped jalapenos); The BOB MARLEY (jerk chicken, bacon, and drizzled with a pickapeppa ranch); the MAUI WOWIE! (topped with jalapeño pineapple chutney and pulled pork); or the RAJIN CAJUN (crawfish tails and andouille sausage); Volcano also offers an ADULT GRILLED CHEESE (made with thick slices of sourdough bread, their signature béchamel sauce, house-made applewood-smoked bacon jam that is made with St. Arnold’s root beer and brown sugar, grilled until the provolone and gruyere cheeses are oozing out). MAINLY DRINKS (223 West Main Street, La Porte): Although they do serve drinks, this place does more than the name implies! Although, technically, it is a full-service restaurant, we decided to shine a light on them because some in the commuChipotle Seafood Pasta nity may not think of food when they hear the name. But it’s quite the contrary. This establishment serves excellently prepared meals for lunch and dinner six days a week. They also offer gourmet coffees and teas, micro-brewery ales and beers, and boutique wines. Must Haves: SWEET POTATO AND JALAPEÑO BISQUE (garnished with candied bacon and jalapeños); SMOTHERED LOBSTER FRIES WITH SHRIMP AND CRAWFISH (lobster, shrimp, and crawfish sautèed with onions and peppers, smothered in cheese and poured over beer-battered fries); MAINLY DRINKS BURGER (wine-marinated Angus beef patty, cheddar cheese, crisp leaf lettuce, tomato, onion and a creamy chipotle aioli, served with your choice of crispy fries, house fried chips, or vegetable of the day); CHIPOTLE SEAFOOD PASTA (sautéed lobster, shrimp, crawfish, onions and peppers tossed with linguine in chipotle cream sauce).

Anti-Pub Grub:

Above L to R: Cannon Balls @ Preamble; Sampler @ Scotty’s Pub and Moby Dick @ Skallywag Subs & Grub

Taking Bar Food to the Next Level The phrase “pub grub” usually refers to the basic burgers, French fries or wings that pubs/bars serve as a side gig to slinging drinks. Here in the Clear Lake area, however, there are a handful of bars that serve outstanding food that will please even the most sophisticated culinary connoisseur. The establishments listed below are bars, first and foremost, that offer gourmet, one-of-a kind epicurean delights. Not your average pub grub, the menus at these establishments are original and creative and testament to how serious the chefs and/or owners are about their cuisine, taking “pub fare” to the next level with unique menu items that are sure to satisfy even the most critical foodie and maybe even blow their mind, or at the very least, explode their taste buds. - Shawn Domingues PREAMBLE LOUNGE & CRAFT HOUSE (20801 Gulf Freeway #12, Webster): A speakeasy-inspired lounge serving signature craft cocktails in an intimate setting, this prohibition-style, post-modern cocktail bar showcases the art of the handcrafted cocktail. Owner Joshua Jones helped start a cocktail revolution in the clear lake area and it’s clear that Preamble’s bar staff is motivated by the spirits. Expertly trained, these mixologists have mastered the artistry of the craft cocktail. But Preamble isn’t solely focused on the cocktails (anymore). They recently launched their kitchen and are just as passionate about their pub fare. Chef Ryan Klen has been in the kitchen since he was able to stand and his passion for culinary art continues to thrive at Preamble. Must Haves: CANNON BALLS (loaded mushrooms, stuffed with cream cheese, applewood bacon, chives and topped with panko bread crumbs); BLUE CHEESE WEDGE BITES (lettuce wedge bites topped with Roma tomatoes, applewood bacon, blue cheese crumbles and house-made balsamic and bacon vinaigrette), and PRETZEL STICKS (served with their Hopadillo beer cheese sauce and a house-made wholegrain balsamic mustard); CHICKEN *IN* WAFFLES, yes INSIDE the waffle (sweet cream Belgian waffle stuffed with a crispy chicken breast, covered in house made maple and bacon gravy) and every Wednesday Night is Prime Rib Night (delicious prime rib prepared by Chef Ryan Klen), served on a first-come-firstserve basis. They sell out every week, so get there early. Filet Mignon Skewer

SKALLYWAG SUDS N’ GRUB (600 6th St., Kemah): The name scallywag conjures up images of pirates and eye patches, but this is much more than a pirate bar. Owners Demetri Moose Knuckle Burger Kouloumoundras and his brother John Kouloumoundras designed this craft beer bar with the goal of creating an atmosphere that is intimate, laidback and not pretentious in any way. With over 50 rotating taps focusing on Texas Asian Pork Belly Tacos breweries, it’s clear that Skallywag takes pride in their beer selection as well as the great Lone Star State. The kitchen is open Sunday through Thursday from noon until midnight and Friday and Saturday from noon until 1 a.m. Chef Ernie Garza and Demetri Kouloumoundras are constantly coming up with new menu items that are unique and delicious. They change the menu at least twice a year. Must Haves: PORKY PIG EGG ROLLS (ground pork, carrot, cabbage with general tsao dipping sauce); MAC DADDY’S (fried bacon mac-N-cheese balls with queso and chipotle mayo drizzle); HOG SKINS (fried dry rub pork rinds served with jalapeño ranch); MOOSE KNUCKLE BURGER (ground elk seared in duck fat, curry stout mustard, gruyere cheese and pickled onion on a toasted brioche bread); YELLOWFIN FISH TACOS (ginger cilantro slaw, onion, chilli ranch, lime twist, hot sauce drizzle on corn tortillas); and the MOBY DICK (fresh yellowfin tuna steak, blackened and topped with summer slaw and dill aioli on a pretzel bun with lemon sauce). SCOTTY’S ON THE BAY (3202 Marina Bay Drive in Kemah): Owner Scott Sexton says this neighborhood bar has elements of a traditional English/Irish pub, “But we have tailored our offerings to fit a unique eclectic cocktail and food menu. We like to think of Grown-up Grilled Cheese the bar like your favorite pair of jeans.

MichiRu Sushi Celebrating 8 Years of World Class Sushi and Asian Fusion Cuisine By Sarah Piña In 2009, sushi and Japanese cuisine chef Andy Zhuo decided to make the leap from Manhattan (where he had two successful restaurants) and transplant his expertise in the Clear Lake area to be closer to family. That year, MichiRu was crafted and born. As some may recall, this was in the same timeframe as the construction of the NASA overpass. Achieving overwhelming success, much of which can be attributed to the high-quality standards, expert skill, and knowledge of the chefs. “[Zhuo] was born in China, and moved to New York City when he was 19, where he learned from the best Japanese master sushi chefs in the world,” said David Zinn, who became involved almost right away in several capacities, and now serves as General Manager for MichiRu. During that time, Zinn quickly learned that he was involved in something exceptional. “It was even things like the plates, for example. I would see the dishes and think they had these amazing decorations. I couldn’t believe that it was the sauce, because the designs were so incredible,” Zinn said. From design to service to innovative cuisine, it didn’t take long for Clear Lake residents, and sushi fans from all over Houston, to take notice.

8-Year Anniversary Event: Sunday, August 27 For every $50 spent, the customer will receive a $25 gift card, no limit. Spend $500, get $250 in gift cards

“Once we opened, it took off very quickly,” he said, noting that the menu is always the product of Zhuo’s mastermind – he trains each and every sushi chef at the restaurant. “He’s a culinary genius,” Zinn said. “And over these past eight years, the menu has gotten even more creative. We have special ‘off the menu’ items every week that keep changing. Everything is detail, detail, detail here.” And those “in the know” recognize not only the detail, but the quality of sushi and Japanese cuisine served at MichiRu. (In addition to the Webster location, a second location downtown opened four years ago.) “The sushi is exceptional. We use the least amount of rice and the highest quality of fish. We pay more per pound than almost anyone around, and things like that reflect in the quality of sushi and other dishes that have earned the recognition of people in the industry that know. Sushi chefs will come in here from all over Houston, from the most well-known sushi restaurants and say: ‘This is the best,’” Zinn said. - Continued On Page 15
