CCEF to Host DINE
OUT TO DONATE
Monday, Oct. 2 at 58 Restaurants
The Clear Creek Education Foundation (CCEF) recently announced that it will host its fourth annual “Dine Out to Donate” event on Monday, October 2 and is excited to have so many local restaurants participating. Participating restaurants will donate a portion of their October 2 revenue to CCEF to benefit the students and teachers of Clear Creek Independent School District.
“This year, the response to the Clear Creek Education Foundation’s Dine Out to Donate has been tremendous,” said Kaci Hanson, CCEF Executive Director. “The community continues to demonstrate its strong support of the Clear Creek Independent School District, and we thank all of the participating restaurants for their commitment.” CCEF encourages citizens to dine out for a good cause on Monday, Oct. 2. The process is simple – patrons enjoy a meal at a participating restaurant, and restaurant proprietors donate a portion of the proceeds to CCEF to support its many programs, including Teacher Innovative Grants, National Board Teacher Certification, Clear Horizons Early College High School and Technology Education Labs. Patrons are encouraged to bring the printable flier that can be found on the Foundation’s website (clearcreekeducationfoundation.org).

The Pelican Grill:
Soaring to New Heights Under New Ownership By Shawn Domingues Pelican Grill received quite a bit of buzz when Robert Irvine tried to rescue it from extinction on his show, Restaurant Impossible, for the Food Network in 2012, but the buzz quickly faded and ultimately Irvine’s mission proved to be impossible. When the cozy restaurant went on the market for sale, the current owners, Zach and Sarinya Lowry and Jeeb Tippayapon, seized the opportunity and decided to rescue it… again. Three years later, it seems Pelican Grill has enough wind beneath its wings to keep soaring for a very long time. Zach grew up in La Porte and was stationed in San Diego while he was in the Navy; that’s where he met his wife Sarinya, who goes by the nickname Nu. A year later, the couple decided to open a food booth at the local farmer’s market with Nu’s best friend, Jeeb, and the three have been partners ever since. Their first taste of restaurant ownership proved to be a rewarding experience, so the three partners decided to go “big AND go home” to pursue their dreams of owning a restaurant down the coast from Zach’s hometown. A passion for food and a love for cooking run deep within each of the partners, and this common bond is what keeps the dream alive. “I love to cook and make nice dishes of food that taste good,” said Nu, “I like to see what the customers think, and I am happy when they like it.”
“My mom used to tell me I was born with a spatula in my hand,” Nu said, “From the age of 8, my mom would make me cook at least one dish every day before I could go outside and play.” Their passion is proving to pay off as the great reviews keep pouring in about the new owners, their friendly staff, and the food at Pelican Grill, which has become a local hangout. “What I really love is the atmosphere,” said Zach, “Our customers have become our family, and the customers have gotten to know each other as well. Someone made a joke that this place was kind of like Cheers, where everybody knows your name." When asked about the experience of owning a restaurant in the area, Jeeb replied, “I have never seen a community like Seabrook, where both wealthy entrepreneurs and salty sailors live and hang out together. The people are genuine, want to know everything about you, and legitimately care about their neighbors. We are very grateful to have started our first restaurant in one of the best cities we have ever lived in, and we are lucky to call Seabrook our new home.” - Continued On Page 15

Pelican Grill:
Local artists such as Brian Hitchcock, Nancy Longenecker, Frank Bettencourt and Peter Bowman showcase their art on the walls of Pelican Grill and the artwork is ever-changing since the artists sell their pieces and bring in new art consistently.
From Page 10
Serving breakfast and lunch daily, Pelican Grill proudly offers their customers “great food without a huge bill,” and the locals flock to the eatery for standout menu items like the Smoked Salmon Benedict, the Reuben Breakfast Sandwich or the popular Eagle’s Nest (which is diced ham, bacon, sausage, tomato, green bell pepper and onion mixed with eggs on top of hash browns and served with gravy sauce and cheese). Each dish is made to order using traditional homemade recipes and the lunch menu offers classic American fare such as the Killer Club Sandwich or the Chicken-Fried Steak, as well as several large salads served in unique wooden bowls. Insider Scoop: A new menu will be coming out toward the end of the month in September that will expand upon the customer favorites by adding new eggs Benedict selections, as well as small plate options and healthy, gluten-free menu items.
The artwork and menu may change, but the partners plan to stick to the same flight path they have been soaring for the past three years. Stop by for breakfast or lunch any day of the week and tell them The SCENE sent you! The future looks bright on this side of the lake.

Things are getting pretty “real” at Zone 504 in Kemah where a new reality TV show is being filmed. The show, In The Zone, is being produced by a former NFL Green Bay Packers player and will be focused on the team of beautiful bartenders and staff at Zone 504. Owner Heather Smith said, “We are known for having the hottest bartenders in Texas, but these women are so much more than ‘just another pretty face,’ they are strong, independent women who are single mothers trying to raise and provide for their children as best as they can while working in the bar industry.” Think “Housewives of Whatever City,” but with working women struggling to make ends meet who are really more like family and actually look out for one another instead of stabbing each other in the back.

Overview: Sawa might be the newest Mediterranean restaurant in the area, but owner Abdul Ghonym has been cooking homemade Mediterranean fare in Clear Lake for over a decade. His latest venture brings us hummus made from scratch and fresh-to-order Mediterranean salads. With ingredients grown in his garden out back and authentic olive oil straight from his sister’s family-owned olive farm in the West Bank, the menu at Sawa is full of authentic Mediterranean dishes, but one real standout is the Mixed Kabob. Made with Filet Mignon and chicken that has been marinated for more than 24 hours, this mouthwatering kabob is served on the skewers and comes with homemade Mediterranean rice and delicious green beans cooked with onions and tomatoes with just a hint of tomato sauce. Insider tip: Enjoy with a delicious Mint Smoothie made with fresh mint from the garden.

ARTS
A RT, R OCKS ! By Kelley Dawson “It’s an Easter egg hunt all year round,” proclaimed Tonya Rolf, founder of the Clear Lake Painted Rock Hunt group. She’s not the first to create such a group. Rock art has been around as long as cave drawings. In the mid 1970s the pet rock grew immensely popular.
ROCK HIDING TIPS: • Hide in public places, not on private property.
Recently, the trend to paint, hide, and hunt rocks has exploded across the globe. Rolf had heard about other painted rock groups on social media, and in her original home state of Arkansas as well as other areas around the country. A friend painted a rock for Rolf’s flower bed as a housewarming gift. While unpacking boxes in her new home, Rolf serendipitously opened a box of art supplies that had been stored for 20 years. Rolf said, “I thought I’d paint rocks and hide them in the community, and get everyone involved. That’s how it began.” For Rolf’s painted rock group and others, the intent simply is to brighten someone’s day.
• The rocks should be easily seen and accessible. • Do not place in grassy areas where mowers and other yard equipment could be damaged. • The group is public and is not limited to the Clear Lake area. To learn more, visit Clear Lake Painted Rock Hunt on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/1128829503928793/ • There are several local painted rock groups including Galveston County “Rocks!” Official Group: facebook.com/groups/1757986264488895/
“The purpose is to promote kindness and inspire others to get involved,” further explained Rolf. Through random rocks of kindness and art inspiration, her group’s aspiration grows with every art rock discovery and each new member. In a month’s time, the group consists of over 300 members. To continuously spread joy, it is requested the rocks are labeled with the group page info. When a rock is found, Rolf’s hope is the person will read the printed or handwritten information, take a photo of the rock, and post to social media. She expressed, “That way the person who painted [the rock] may get a chance to see it was found.” Some of the group’s local rocks have been relocated and discovered as far away as the Alamo in San Antonio, South Carolina, and St. Croix. All ages and both men and women paint and hide rocks. Rolf told that retirees to toddlers participate. She added, “You don’t have to be an artist. You can’t mess up. You can paint over and try again.” Designs range from very simple polka dots to intricate fine art pieces. The painted creations are typically river or landscaping rocks. Rolf informed rock sizes three to five inches in diameter are best to ensure the rocks are easily found. The supplies she uses include acrylic paint and exterior Modge Podge which seals the rocks. Rolf mentioned sealing the rocks keeps them from fading and chipping. She said people use other paints, paint pens, Sharpies; and that it can be whatever you have handy. Rolf paints rocks daily and hides them at the end of the week. “I’m kind of rock doctor,” she quipped. She often repairs any damaged rocks she finds whether it’s a missing googly eye or chipped paint. Rolf admitted she found several painted rocks she’s wanted to keep, but continues to relocate them all. - Continued on Page 22

“If you find a rock that inspires you and makes you happy, you can keep it, but are encouraged to paint another rock to replace it. The main object is to find and relocate,” advised Rolf. She affirmed, “If someone finds a rock that means something to them, they should certainly keep it.” Rolf suggested the whole family can paint, hide, and hunt rocks together. Community involvement groups can join in on the fun, too. Rolf recently shared her group’s purpose and how-to’s with a local Girl Scout troop. “It’s a great activity

2017 Harvest Moon Regatta features Sail-a-thon For the sixth year, a Sail-athon to raise ovarian cancer awareness will be part of Lakewood Yacht Club’s Harvest Moon Regatta which will race from Galveston to Port Aransas over October 5 – 8. The beneficiary of the Sail-athon proceeds will be the Judy’s Mission Ovarian Cancer Foundation. The organization was founded seven years ago to honor Judy Robinson, a long-time member of Lakewood and participant in the HMR. Since Sail-a-thon began, over $68,000 has been raised for awareness programs. The Judy’s Mission trophy, honoring Robinson, will be presented again this year to the skipper who raises the most money for the event. Additionally, five individual trophies are presented to first, second and third place skippers who raise the most funds, an awareness trophy to the skipper who receives the most donations, and an organization trophy to the virtual boat who raises the most funds. This presentation will take place during the HMR Awards Ceremony the evening of Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Port “A” City Pavilion.
Robinson was an avid sailor, boat owner, and racing participant. She was a member of the Harvest Moon Regatta committee for years and was a great supporter of the event. Despite a healthy lifestyle, Robinson was diagnosed with advanced stage ovarian cancer in 2009 and died within a year. While battling ovarian cancer, she was determined to do something to raise awareness about the vague signs and symptoms and ineffective screening tools for women impacted by ovarian cancer. The Judy’s Mission Ovarian Cancer Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization in Houston dedicated to raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and to funding research. For further information, please visit the website www.judysmission.org. To participate in the Sail-a-thon, please visit the website www.harvestmoonregatta.com and click on Sail-A-Thon. Direct any questions about the regatta to HMR Race Chair Paul Dunphey at hmr@lakewoodyachtclub.com or call Principal Race Officer Dwight Bengtson at 832-457-5154.

Revolver - Tribute to Rage Against The Machine @ Scout Bar
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 31 RAGE - Seems to be a common emotion during the dawg days of summer and this summer, the heat seems to be really getting to many. If my history serves me correctly, the Houston area was one of the early participants in ‘road rage’ driving. Fortunately, the area seems to have gotten rage out of its system, and I’d like to think places like Scout Bar has done the community a fine job providing a live music outlet for proper release. In August, we got to catch Revolver - A Tribute to Rage Against The Machine. BOOM!!! Reuben had the band sound BIG, CRISP and SHARP letting Revolver show off their complex rap/heavy metal savvy with breaks and turnarounds reflecting the music’s heavy Rush influence. Perhaps if more places across the nation had a Scout Bar in their neighborhood… IT’S A WRAP - Lucky us! The days are getting shorter which means that summer is wrapping up meaning the return of patio season. The “good” games for our pro baseball team lie ahead and all the pigskin teams we follow will be putting their undefeated season to the test. A big shout out to my colleague, Sarah Piña! I’m truly going to miss her writing and stories of what all happens on the music SCENE and wish her all the best with her new career in Wisconsin. Lots of great action usually happens this time of year, and I’m expecting the same to hold true this year. Thanks to all you good people who stopped by to chat, sharing your stories. We’ve made it through a lot this year, and our best days are here and now on The SCENE. Cheers!!!!!

Tommy Dardar Celebration of Life @ Big Easy Social Club
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 32 CELEBRATION FOR A FRIEND - Bluesman Tommy Dardar left us earlier this year. In fine New Orleans style, the celebration of life at the Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club, scored “Over-The-Top” mention – perhaps for the entire year already. Memorials for fallen musicians are notorious for their magical musical moments and this event, the rule held true. Pushing matters even further over the top were the copious quantities of homemade Cajun Style Potluck filling the entire pool room, fed fans the entire day, and typically spiced to level 7 on the 5-point flame index. What absolutely shoved this event waaaaaay over the top was the standing room only turnout of friends, musicians, and family – many who belong to one of Tommy’s favorite organizations, the Houston Blues Society. Before the music got going, I got to spend time catching up with Ezra Charles who is showcasing “The Story of Boogie Woogie” a musical narrative of a music style that began in the lumber camps in the 1870s from East Texas. While you can still catch an Ezra Charles show if you get invited to the right Christmas Parties, do yourself a favor and catch his show, happening now in the great Houston metroplex (www.ezracharles.com). The music started with an EXPLOSIVE opening set from the Evelyn Rubio Band and things simply got hotter from there. The Allison Fisher band took the music deep into soul and swing territory while Brad Abshire and James Wilhite took turns holding the stage together as more and more musicians plugged in, turned it on, and turned it up with what had to have been a magical musical afternoon of blues – I’m sure Dardar himself was in the mix. I had to move on as the fans kept arriving throughout the afternoon and into the evening – a shout out to the Houston Blues Society for getting the word out to spread the load in a way only these people can. If these cats happen to be in your area, don’t be surprised if they bring an army to the show, they certainly can. They’re a well-wired bunch. Chatting with the James Wilhite and other Big Easy regulars, the turn out was described as PHENOMENAL. People came all the way from Tomball and out out of state for this event – a testimony to the many lives Dardar touched while he was with us. - Continued on Page 30

Rat Ranch @ Zone 504
IT COULD GET LOUD - is a favorite music documentary of mine featuring Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White. It was also the thought that came to mind when I spotted Rat Ranch on the calendar at the new Zone 504. Rat Ranch travels with enough stage gear to handle large venues with ease and I along with many were curious how the band would fit into Zone 504. Thanks to the front porch to serve as a backstage, the fit was living room cozy and the sound is GREAT. With a humongous sub-woofer planted in middle of the dance floor and monitors smartly placed across the room, the sound was as if the entire room was transformed into a comfortably fitting headphone, perhaps even home theater quality making for a uniquesounding, Texas-style, rocking good time. The Zone 504 building is a state of Texas designated historical marker and the old house styling, the antithesis of the modern strip mall venues, makes for one of the area’s more unique live music venues. This band plays over 200 shows a year, keeps great shape and capable of handling the Kemah August outdoors on the hottest of weather. Nonetheless, with perhaps the best AC happening in the Lighthouse District and an awesome sound happening, a Rat Ranch show at Zone 504 is a winner. Hey, Good People, listen up please…. Be sure and checkout their website (www.ratranch.com) where you Rat Ranch @ Zone 504 can load up their music FOR FREE on your player! As A.D. Rowntree would always say, “Everybody loves free stuff,” and it just so happens that this stuff is “very good.” HOT STREAK - Our beloved hometown pro baseball team had a nice streak running in July. Knock on wood. I’ve got a streak running too. For nearly a year, I’ve had a saying “Pick a night, any night, and you’re likely sure to catch a good live music show at Katie’s in Bacliff. I’d like to tweak what I said a bit, “Check out the Caulderon Brothers @ Katie’s calendar at Katie’s. If you’ve never heard of the band, check out the show. It’ll likely be a dandy.” Which is what I did in the month of August when I caught the Caulderon Brothers for the first time. This is one nifty gritty three piece R&B band with a perfect stage presence – only the vocals needed the PA. Barry Seelen was on the keys leaning hard and heavy on his black Leslie. The lead licks were delightfully crisp with what I believe were 1/32 notes racing through a 4/4 groove. This was a delightful find as this band doesn’t doesn’t keep up a large social media presence. Rather it seems that they get around mainly by word of mouth and referrals. Got discriminating blues music fans in town your trying to impress? Take the to Katie’s. They’ll think you’re a genius! - Continued on Page 31

Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival
Radney Foster
Continued From Page 48 The festival will then wrap up with a bang on Sunday, October 1, when again dozens of local and national musicians and songwriters will share their craft throughout the area, and Texas native and festival headliner Radney Foster will perform that evening. Foster, best known for his hit songs “Nobody Wins” and “Just Call Me Lonesome,” has made a name for himself in the music industry as a performer and songwriter whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Sara Evans, Keith Urban, Jack Ingram, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Gary Allan. From local to national acts sharing their talent and experiences in the music industry, the Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival is a special event for the area that is not to be missed for music-loving audiences and up-and-coming musician and songwriters alike. “It’s been really great to partner with all of the wonderful local businesses in the area for this event,” said Burns. “We anticipate attendance from all over the Gulf Coast, and hope that this develops into a destination songwriting festival.”
David Lee Murphy
Most of the shows are free, with exception of certain concerts, such as headliners David Lee Murphy and Radney Foster. Head to galvestonbaysongwriters.com to clench $35 tickets for reserved seating (in the first six rows, great for those who wish to closely listen) or $20 (ideal for more casual festival revelers). A very limited number of all-inclusive VIP tickets (for all ticketed concerts, preferred parking, and more) are also available. Don’t miss this unique, first-ever event that is the Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival!

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35 And that evening, the killer heat was impotent in the cool Railean Rum cavern, rage over riots & statues was nowhere to be argued, and the anguish of the killings around the world were put aside. It was a day the mint, mojitos and the music won the day. Perhaps we’re onto a recipe for world peace here. We will be back... BACK ON THE BEAT - Which would be the Ol’ Mother’s and Zone 504. We’ll start with the first... Clear Lake’s upscale icehouse on 146 is looking better than ever. For those of you who haven’t been here before or heard of ice houses, the first thing one notices is that they’re large metal buildings with huge overhead garage doors, ice cold beverages, and gritty rock and roll. None of your fern bar stuff. On the stage was a showcase powerhouse garage band, Daddy Longnecks (Anthony Corona, Danny Acker, John Donaghy & Scott Parker) with a sound system that could easily carry over motorbikes, a full set of stage lights and effects, all with a bona fide road crew to boot. These guys are seriously party ready with a clear intent to have fun and a good time with the audience. Chatting with the band’s manager, Daddy Longnecks used to play here back in the day when Lowell owned the place. I miss the upstairs pool tables, but I’m liking this new Ol’ Mother’s and the return of gritty rock & roll to our neighborhood icehouse. I think Lowell would be pleased, too.

Loose Notes by Andy Eng
Live music in the area was ‘extremely’ outstanding during the month of August. Many thanks to the great venues, talented musicians and great fans for making this one over the top month. Let’s run down the list of some of what went down in August. PARROTS THAT ROCK AND SWING - With school winding down, the dinner crowds were out en masse at T-Bone Tom’s. They were nothing the crisp running staff couldn’t handle. Coming in from the parking lot, the sound in the air was distinctly unique and on the stage was the Dennis Davis Band. The first time I heard this group was when they played the Harvest Moon Regatta Bacardi Party and the second time was at Noah’s Ark. Back then, we put them on our watch list after getting to listen to Davis’s album, Last Song of the Summer. This band owns a different kind of Parrothead sound that builds around a deep rooted rock & roll influence and dashes of Country & Western swing, resulting, in my opinion, a Parrothead sound that resonates well not just lyrically in the mind but also to the bone – a great crossover approach that can easily take their gig anywhere. MOJITOS, MINT & MUSIC - was my mission and Railean Distillery was the destination. In Kelton’s book, “Gigs from Hell,” Gene wrote often of enjoying a cold beer and playing gigs at several of the many ice houses in the region. It’s a fact that he never stepped foot into the friendliest rum distillery on the planet located in San Leon. But if he had, I’d wager that he would’ve liked the place and would’ve likely enjoyed trying out new material... Speaking of new material, Brooke Alyson, Kelli Thompson and Woff deLong were on the stage sharing for the audience their collaborative acoustic project, playing a “very” wide swath of classic rock and pop songs not part of their regularly Nightbird gig. One thing I’ve noticed about the astute live music listeners in the area is how they stop yapping to listen when the music grabs their muse. - Continued on Page 34

Meet The Brewer: BILL ARNING Continued from Page 45 Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? Mexico City at a Metallica concert with 50,000 of my closest amigos. Beer is great, but metal is like air to me. I need it to survive. And I need it for you to survive. Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? I recently took a vacation in Belize. They aren’t really known for their beer selection, but just about anything tastes good when you’re at a bar that has innertubes floating in the Caribbean for bar stools, complete with stingrays swimming beneath us and everything. The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. When I was 15, I needed money to buy records. Remember how metal is my air? Yeah, so I started mowing yards. In 1986, kids really didn’t have very many options, so professional lawn care became my career. I stuck with it for 31 years. It was boring AF, but it paid the bills. My most interesting job was delivering pizzas for Mr. Jim’s in Plano in my Camaro that I raced at the local dragstrip on the weekends. Gas was cheap then. Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. Start small and brew what you like to drink. Chances are, there are others who like the same thing. You don’t need to convert the masses, you just need to make good beer. And, even more importantly, you need to SELL good beer. Surround yourself with people who are smarter and better than you. The state of the Texas craft beer scene is inspiring, to say the least. I’m really enjoying some of the new and exciting beers that are coming out from breweries in greater Houston. I know pretty much every brewer in the area, and to see them go from brewing in their garage to producing that same beer on a large scale is quite encouraging. Favorite perk of working in a brewery is making people happy. There’s no better satisfaction than seeing someone’s face light up when they try one of my creations for the first time. Oh. And free beer. Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is Waiting. You pour your heart and soul in creating a badass IPA, then donate your sweat and stress into an 8-hour brew day, only to wait three weeks to try the final product. If you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? Brash. They’re metal AF. Oh, and they brew some of the best IPAs on the planet.

Favorite Texas brewed beer? Without a doubt, hands down, no question, Yellow Rose from Lone Pint. If I see it on the tap list, I stop reading. My “beer snob” friends like to give me sh*t about always ordering the same beer when I go out, but I like what I like. It’s delicious. They can have their latest and greatest superrare barrel aged whales, I’ll be over here enjoying my Yellow Rose. Thank you very much. Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? Sublimely Self Righteous by Stone. It’s the beer that turned me on to craft beer forever. My (now ex-) wife and I split a bomber of it in the Hooters parking lot one time before meeting some friends, and it just blew me away. We bought it for the badass logo, and it didn’t disappoint. My whole car smelled like the art teacher’s office on a Friday afternoon. Stone’s head brewer, Mitch Steele is my hero. I read everything he writes. When I grow up, I want to be just like him.
Bill Arning is an award-winning brewer at Cranky Britches Brewing Co. and has collaborated with Saloon Door Brewing and Beerfoot Beach Bar among others and will be making more news soon.
Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? My favorite beer to brew is Pentagram Porter. I just love brewing that beer on a cool morning. It fills the room with sweet coffee aroma, and it’s actually really easy to brew. My favorite beer to drink is my dill pickle Gose. I call it adult Gatorade.
What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? Speaking of Goses. Is that the plural of Gose? No one knows. But anyway, if you’re looking for something to drink at the beach or otherwise in this Texas heat, go for a Gose. Salty, tart and light? Yes, please. What many critics don’t realize is that it’s much more difficult to make a light beer taste good than a heavy dark beer.

Ozz
All Aboard the Crazy Train! Blaggards Thurs., Sept. 7 T-BONE TOM’S
Get ready to board the crazy train, Clear Lake! Ozz, the award-winning, fan-favorite Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath Tribute returns to Scout Bar this month with another high-energy, dedicated tribute performance to the famed British rocker and his band, Black Sabbath.
OZZ - A TRIBUTE TO OZZY/SABBATH w/ Mob Rules (Tribute to Ronnie James Dio)
Saturday, September 23, 2017 Scout Bar (Doors 8pm / Show 9:30pm)
Infinity’s Twin Fri., Sept. 8 ZONE 504
Ozz formed in 2011 and has been rocking and wowing crowds in Houston and beyond ever since. The tribute encompasses the span of Ozzy Osbourne’s entire career, from Black Sabbath to his solo albums with Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Zakk Wylde and Gus G. From appearance to performance, the band is dedicated to giving the most memorable Ozzy experience to their audiences, even taking on stage names as part of their stage persona. The current lineup consists of Iggy Igbourne (Iggy Reyna, vocals); Todd B. (Todd D. Bishop, guitar); sKot “Whiplash” Daisley (Scot Whiplash Burmeister, bass); Sandy Castillo (Paul Sandefur, drums); and Adam “Sinclair” Rawlings on keyboards. Names aside, the physical likeness and spot-on performances have left some audience members wondering if who they saw was Ozzy Osbourne or not! “Everyone in the band really looks like someone who would be in Ozzy’s band. I do the tattoos, the whole thing. But the most important thing is that the music is as dead-on as possible,” said Iggy, lead vocalist. “Once I get into character, I am Ozzy,” he said, with the perfect, raspy and British-toned voice that the eccentric Osbourne is known for. This lends entirely to the stage performance as well, playing fan favorites as well as more obscure songs for die-hard Ozzy Osbourne fans.
The Spazmatics Fri., Sept. 15 SCOUT BAR
“What’s surprising is that the Black Sabbath songs that go way back are the ones that evoke huge reactions. Songs like ‘Mr. Crowley’ and ‘No More Tears,’ are always a favorite. And then of course people lose their minds when we play hits like ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘War Pigs,’” he said. So what else can audiences expect if they have never attended an Ozz show? “A very lively performance! We all love this music and are deeply passionate about it and the history of it. Our love of the music really shows, I think,” Iggy said. “But at the end of the day, it’s something about Ozzy, something about his voice that always carries through us and electrifies the stage.” Ozz performs next in Clear Lake with Mob Rules (a tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio) at Scout Bar on Saturday, September 23. Tickets are $10 (available at www.scoutbar.com, or at the door). Doors open at 8 p.m. and the crazy train takes off at 9:30 p.m.! Don’t miss this spot-on, incredible tribute to Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, and see you out there on The SCENE! - Sarah Piña

First Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival Debuts Off This Month
Cabo Clear Lake - Seabrook The Railean American Spirits Stage 6:00PM ....Will Kimbrough, Mary Cutrufello, & Christopher Dale 7:45PM .................................................... The Detentions
T-Bone Tom’s - Kemah
By Sarah Piña The Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival kicks off for the first time ever at the end of this month, and official locations, stages, and artists have now been announced! The The Detentions SCENE Magazine Drop Dead Dangerous first broke the news Sat., Sept. 30 • 7:30pm Sat., Sept. 30 • 8pm of the inaugural T-BONE TOM’S CABO (RAILEAN SPIRITS STAGE) event this past April, which will feature several free music and songwriting events as well as ticketed concerts showcasing national headliners Radney Foster and David Lee Murphy. The festival first opens, however, on Thursday, September 28 with a tribute to a late Texas country icon. “We will have a tribute to Guy Clark that evening called ‘Always Trust Your Cape – A Tribute to Guy Clark.’ It is going to be a very special event which will be held that evening at the Kemah Community Center, and I say special particularly because Tamara Saviano will host it,” said Jon Burns, founder of Poets & Pirates who hosts a weekly podcast of the same name with local artists, and who has also produced similar showcases in Texas. “Tamara is a Grammy-award winning producer of his and other artists’ work, but she was also close friends with Guy,” he explained. Saviano also wrote Clark’s biography Without Getting Killed or Caught: The Life and Music of Guy Clark (2016), and is currently working on a documentary exploring different facets of Clark’s life. Heading into the weekend, then, on Friday, September 29, twenty different acts – from local favorites Ben Reyna, to Austin-based duo The Detentions and Tennessee’s Drop Dead Dangerous – will perform on four different stages beginning at 5 p.m. “Starting on Friday and continuing throughout the weekend, musicians and songwriters from Texas and across the U.S. will play throughout Kemah and Seabrook,” Burns said. “The festival will be mostly free, with many of what are called ‘in-the-round’ sessions, a format where three songwriters will perform and speak about their music and the songwriting process on several different stages in the area.” These locations include Cabo Clear Lake (The Railean American Spirits Stage), T-Bone Tom’s, as well as the Kemah City Parking Lot and The Railean Buccaneer Bar. Saturday, September 30, the same locations will host more than 30 different acts beginning at 12:30 p.m. and culminate with David Lee Murphy, the festival’s first national headliner to take the stage. Hailing from the Nashville country music scene, the acclaimed songwriter and performer will bring a one-of-a-kind experience to audiences at the festival, who will have the chance to hear hits Murphy has written for everyone from Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, to Brooks and Dunn, Blake Shelton, and even Jason Aldean (with his megahit “Big Green Tractor”). “During David’s set, audiences will also get a chance to not only hear the originator of some of their favorite songs perform them, but hear some ‘behind-the-scenes’ stories, such as how the songs came to be, or his inspiration for them,” Burns said. - Continued on Page 33
