Blackgrass Gospel Returns to Scout Bar, October 19 By Sarah Piña A mandolin, a guitar, drums, a banjo, raspy vocals, and a slamming upright bass converge on one shadow-filled stage. It’s all the makings of what one would expect to be an emblematic bluegrass and Americana show – and then, defying all expectation, the dark lyrics emerge, some renderings of this band’s trademark jackalope skull of Texas folklore materialize, and what is familiar to many as heavy metal rhythms begin to thrash and electrify the audience.
Oct. 19 @ Scout with Cash’d Out - Tribute to Johnny Cash
Rat Ranch Thurs., Oct. 12 ZONE 504
Welcome to the musical mayhem church known as Blackgrass Gospel, a group like no other which took root in Alvin, Texas, three years ago and has garnered an immense following ever since. “It’s basically like metal and punk rock played on folk instruments with metal chord progressions. It’s usually not something you find with folk instruments at all,” said Chris Barnes, who provides vocals for the group and plays the omnipresent upright bass.
Wood N Wind Sat., Oct. 21 NOAH’S ARK
Wait – upright bass? “Yeah, I really see it as a dying art,” he said. “It was given to me on my birthday one year, and I just learned to play it. Really, how we formed as a band is that we picked up all these different instruments and either learned how to play them, or practiced even further what we already knew.”

BARge 295 makes a Splash on Clear Lake! By Jennifer Fuller Experience salt-water life relaxing on the lake without having to own a boat or a waterfront home. Enjoy a resort feel with a panoramic view of Clear Lake while basking in a glowing sunset and floating on the new bar in Seabrook. The former Turtle Club is now BARge 295. This welcoming watering hole encourages guests to unwind and take a break from the everyday routine. Texas liquors create premium cocktails and a fullservice kitchen is onboard to satisfy grumbling tummies. BARge 295 is the clever creation of owners Brad Emel, Mike Robinson and Mike Hessemer. The location of their breezy boat bar is perfect. Clear Lake and the nearby marinas can be seen from every seat in the house. The newly expanded upper deck is partly shaded for those extra sunny days, or guests can choose to stay out of the sun completely and relax in the cool, open-air section of the top floor. Enjoy listening to island music upstairs and sipping on a “famous” Bushwacker served by one of the friendly faces seen around the BARge. Guests can choose from an extensive assortment of liquor and locally crafted beer. General Manager Josh Taylor wants to deliver the best possible premium products to BARge 295 guests. With almost two decades in the food and beverage industry, Taylor favors small batch distilleries and breweries. “You’re getting a really good product made by someone local who has put in a lot of TLC into their creation,” Taylor said. BARge specializes in providing many Texas distilled liquors, including Western Sun, which is a veteran-owned and operated company. “Indulge in high-end drinks without the high-end price,” Taylor said. “We want our guests to experience quality at a fair price.” Check out the Salt Life Old Fashioned made with Rebecca Creek whiskey or a Perfect Storm made with Kraken rum, fresh-squeezed lime juice and ginger beer. To add more to the tropical experience, try the Krak-N-Tai, which is BARge 295’s twist on a Mai Tai, made with Kraken and Malibu rum, amaretto and sweet island juices. Another new aspect of BARge 295 is the food. Owners Emel and Robinson both come from culinary backgrounds. Emel owns Classic Café, which recently celebrated its 32nd anniversary. Robinson graduated from culinary school at The Art Institute of Houston and later interned at Le Gavroche in London. They collaborate closely with Kitchen Manager Cliff Marsters to ensure fresh, delicious gastro-pub style food is prepared. Menu items include: Chicken Kebabs, Korean BBQ Chicken Sliders, Shrimp Ceviche, Royal Reds, an Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl (made with quinoa, barley, red rice, kale, and couscous) or Twisted Nachos (topped with pan sausage, queso blanco, crumbled queso fresco, roasted poblano peppers, black beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, and drizzled with cilantro Greek yogurt sauce). New features have been made to the boat for a more inclusive experience. Colorful epoxy tabletops add to the island-feel of BARge 295. The lower level bar counter is colored in shades of blue and sandy brown to mimic the surf coming in. Large windows have been installed behind the downstairs bar to open up the view of the lake. The kitchen also has a new panoramic west window. Emel said he wanted to incorporate this for guests and staff to enjoy the sunset’s sparkling reflection dancing on the water. Guests can enjoy an air-conditioned, non-smoking environment on the first floor. Smoking is permitted on the entire upper level. - Continued on Page 42

THAT FATEFUL NIGHT When Jared King and his fiancé, Silda Elizabeth Como, left T-Bone Tom’s on Saturday, Sept. 9, they had no idea just how crucial it would be for them to be on that exact road at that exact time. They recounted that heading home at 2 a.m. on Hwy. 146 after a long shift, Jared spotted a car on the side of the road that had flipped on its side. There were no immediate responders on site or approaching. It must have just happened. They immediately pulled over and Jared ran to the car that was now catching on fire. The driver’s side was facing up and once he realized the driver was still in the car, he somehow managed to pull himself up on top of the car and reach down to pull the driver out. The problem was, the driver had broken both of her arms (one in three places) so she could do little to help him. Jared told her to jump, and he was able to miraculously catch her under her armpits to pull her out of the car, just in time for it to go up in flames. Silda rushed to the girl and helped her to quickly get out of harm’s way. “It was surreal. We were just doing what we hope anyone else would’ve done in that situation,” said Silda and Jared. Although they prefer not to be called heroes, they definitely earned hero status from the girl, also a bartender in Kemah, whose life they saved that fateful night.

The Hunger @ Scout Bar
A huge word of THANKS to all of you out there who rolled up your sleeves and pitched in helping friends, family and strangers this past month. If you were on the receiving end of needing a hand, our thoughts and prayers are with you still. Compared to Ike, we got very lucky with most of our SCENE spots getting back up and running in some manner and did so quickly, providing the normality we all needed with good food, drinks and plenty of outstanding live music for all. After Harvey left town, our search was on for a… FULL MENU & FULL BAR - These were the welcoming words at Mamacita’s, Wednesday evening, after Harvey passed through. With multiple locations to choose from, Joe and Alma were at the NASA Road One location with Joe Sr. himself greeting and seating guests that evening. While other eateries in the area were not yet ready for business, the entire Mamacita’s staff from top to bottom were sincerely happy to have us, and it was good seeing their friendly familiar faces. Even the three Mariachi guitarists were in on the action despite it not being their regular Sunday shift. With a good post-storm meal under our belts, it was time to turn to the…. LIGHTHOUSE DISTRICT - I’ve got to admit, early social media pictures of Kemah’s rising water had me quite apprehensive as to how our Lighthouse District would handle Harvey. Turned out very well as this time around. The good folks at Zone 504 transformed into a neighborhood relief distribution center, and our restaurants were making the SCENE feeding first responders. Once the commotion calmed down a bit, and the cabin fever set in, we stopped into T-Bone Tom’s for an evening of the Pee Wee Bowen Band. By my eye, there was an abundance of table settings for up to 20. The itch to get out of the house was widespread and the need for an evening of dining and dancing quite evident. The music this evening was dialed in perfectly for the many of Bowen’s faithful fans. Not many in the area can pull off a convincing Stormy Monday – Pee Wee and his band certainly can. Catching up with keyboard/vocalist John Bockleman, word is that many of the bands in the area are keeping a busy schedule with smaller benefits around the area. We’re not out of this mess yet, so keep your eyes peeled for a local fundraising happening near you.

The bathrooms have been extended and are now handicap accessible. The women’s restrooms have a place for purses, phones and drinks. “I was told at a very early age to pay attention to the cleanliness of women’s restrooms, and the men will go where the girls are,” said Emel. “We have the cleanest restrooms on the lake,” Taylor added. A variety of music is played at BARge 295. Downstairs, they play rock country and blues. Upstairs, they play island-style music to complement the vibe and view. Weekends, during the day and early evening, hear live music playing rock, blues and country. Then later that night, after 10:30 p.m. a D.J. will come on board playing today’s hits, top 40s and dance music. BARge 295 carries the NFL ticket, so televisions are mounted upstairs and downstairs. The first floor plays the games with sound and the upper deck plays music while you enjoy the game. The exception to that rule is if the Texans are playing. In that case, the music’s off, and the game can be heard all over the boat. So grab a few friends and head over to cheer on your favorite team! The Astros are also a huge hit here. Participate in the Oceans of Orange playoff watch parties while enjoying a matching amber sunset. Guests wearing Astros gear enjoy drink specials, $4 Texas beers, $3 Hustle Town shots and $3 (16-ounce) domestics. BARge 295 is the new crew on the lake. Show up by boat or cruise over by car. Take a load off, anchor down, feel the breeze, and enjoy a glass of your favorite spirits. Whether it’s watching a sporting event or listening to music and enjoying the sunset with friends, this tucked-away retreat will surely become your favorite spot for floating fun.

ABOVE L TO R: The Hunger @ Scout Bar’s Pre-Labor Day Show
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 43 THE SHOW MUST GO ON - Is what the true professional entertainers must do, and do it, they did at Scout Bar’s annual Pre-Labor Day show hosted by the Hunger. The bands that evening were strikingly inspired performances, clearly intended to give those able to attend the much-needed relief from their sheetrock and carpet demolition battles. Opening for The Hunger were two local up-andcoming industrial rock bands, Black Market Tragedy and Broken Valor. Both of these groups got their notice while making appearances at the Wednesday night Punk Star Radio shows. According to Isaac Stoddard, Black Market Tragedy is one hard-working band alternating shows between Houston and Austin. I got a chance to visit with front The Hunger @ Scout Bar female Vali Reinhardt about their “powerful melodic melodies and powerful vocals… Sweet & sinister…” In my words, I found them to be refreshingly industrial metal. Turns out they’re from the region just northeast of Houston which has proven fertile grounds providing many potent musical forces. A band to put on your watch list! The Hunger came out with a retooled lineup rotating Richie Hey from key’s onto bass, the Wilson brothers alternated songs on the keys/programming, and guitarist Tim Huston filled the air with 8-string Ibanez on lead. I’ll ‘fess that I missed seeing Jeff and Thomas’ dual lead vocal assault which very few bands are capable of even pulling off. Overall, this lineup was all business putting forth an “outstanding” show leaving me wondering when they be back on a nationwide tour. On a side note, I scored a first at a Hunger show “finally” getting a clear photograph of percussion monster Alex Slay. He had to stand Black Market Tragedy @ Scout Bar up over his colossal kit that normally blocks him out and he held still for what’s usually the impossible moment, but I finally got a good picture of him. (See page 43.) Something at least six years in the making. Thank you, Scout Bar for the show the people needed! LC ROOTS @ LYC - Earlier in the year, I got my first chance to hear LC Roots, one of the early local musical mainstays in the Clear Lake area. It was such a good show that we made note that a follow-up was in order, and we got a chance the Friday after Harvey left town, at a very much-needed party with frontman Faron Daigle and LC Roots, playing at the Lakewood Yacht Club, home of the annual Harvest Moon Regatta. For all of you LC Roots fans out there who are curious, according to Faron, “We currently work as a trio with original bass player, Randy Wills, Preston De Meritt on guitar, steel, banjo and vocals and myself. - Continued on Page 39

Blackgrass Gospel:

Anyone who has seen the band perform live can speak to the trademark bass Barnes plays, and instrument which definitely makes its presence known, although the group also includes Randall Platt on banjo/vocals, Jimmy James Copeland on mandolin/backing vocals/lead electric guitar, Howell Wyndham on rhythm guitar/vocals, as well as Eric Sanders as the featured drummer. The high-energy eclectic group, a self-described “outlaw bluegrass band” which counts artists such as Old Crow Medicine Show, .357 String Band, Johnny Hootrock, and Koffin Katz as influences, regularly plays the Clear Lake and greater Houston area, and now tours nationally. “Our fan base outside of Texas is freaking wild!” Barnes exclaimed, noting that they have played alongside high-caliber similar-genre acts such as Rehab, Reverend Horton Heat, Confederate Railroad, and even Molly Hatchet since forming only a few years ago. Their rocketing popularity also has them playing more dates soon in the Midwest, in the northern United States, as well as some possible shows in Europe next year, and are also in the process of working on their second album, tentatively titled “Banned in Canada.” For the time being however, Clear Lake audiences can experience Blackgrass Gospel’s next transfixing all-original set in October at Scout Bar (“We only really do two covers,” Barnes said), including fan favorites such as “Gallows,” “Stack Them Bones,” and “No Soul to Give,” to name a few.

Hope to see you there, Bertrand McHenry and Doug Meisinger
“Make sure to come on out – it’ll be a lot of energy, a lot of whooping and hollering, and a lot of beer!” Barnes said. Join Blackgrass Gospel as they open for Cash’d Out – A Tribute to Johnny Cash on Thursday, October 19 at Scout Bar. The doors to this all-ages event opens at 7 p.m., with the show beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, and $12 at the door. It’s about the human connection. What do you love about Bartending? I’m a talker. I LOVE talking to people, and you get to meet a LOT of people… and I will talk your ear off if you let me. Who inspires you? My mother, she’s the most selfless, encouraging, inspirational person I’ve ever met, and I thank God she’s in my life. Favorite Halloween Costume growing up? Star Wars Jedi. Since 2012, Scout Bar in Clear Lake has hosted a myriad of live local music each year for a good cause: helping the hungry in the area. With the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey, however, the annual Will Play for Food event founded and directed by wellknown local musician Chris Hardy, with production support from Roland Belmarez, has taken on a new meaning for an even greater purpose.
Chris Hardy
Will Play for Food is a non-profit venture which showcases the vibrant music and art scene each year at Scout Bar, a fundraiser which ultimately benefits the Galveston County Food Bank. This year, however, Hardy and Belmarez sent out a call for submissions for a new project: a Will Play for Food “Flood Edition” to further help with this cause in the city’s time of dire need post-Harvey. “For this part of the fundraiser, we sent out a call for submissions, and were overwhelmed to have received over five hours of music. [Hardy and I] have now narrowed it down to 19 local artists and 75 minutes,” said Belmarez. “This is a digital download through CD Baby that will be released October 11,” he added. The trademark cover art reflects the special nature of the project as well: a red “L” has been inserted into the word “food” to indicate that this would be a special edition Houston Flood Relief release. The musicians featured on the download include Hardy himself, Mandi Powell, Badhouse, David Grace, The High Mile, Astoriya, Heights Funk Collective, rapper MBA featuring Metrico, Aftervibe, Angel Siren, and many, many more. In conjunction with the download, as well as to assist in further fundraising, there will also be an event to support the release later this year. - Continued on Page 36

ABOVE L TO R: Zach Tate & Lynn Raggio @ Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 39 This evening, joining Tate was Lynn Raggio – a true born and raised product from the heart of Louisiana – and the show was on. We caught an incredibly lively set of summertime songs complete with swamp water blues and Gershwin. Nice, eh? I’m sure if Alan himself was there that evening, he might very well repurpose the venue into a Creole Dixieland music beer hall with Tate and Raggio as the house band. Then again, I doubt we’ll ever see anything so drastic, but if you’ve a chance to catch Zach Tate w/ Lynn Raggio at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack, do check it out. KEEPING THE STREAK ALIVE - The calendar at Katie’s had a show I’ve never seen before with Brad Stivers on the marquee - And true to the trend, the show was a burner. This young blues talent had played a show earlier in the day at Greune Hall in New Braunfels, yet they were remarkably crisp and fresh for their Saturday night Brad Stivers show in Bacliff. These guys are truly pros…. Hailing from Austin @ Katie’s and already a veteran on the international Blues touring circuit, Stivers and his band tastely folded a refreshing slashing sizzle into their fundamentally solid blues foundation that was enjoyable and unique. When I asked Brad what it was like touring internationally, he mentioned at length the blues from Spain, where the musicians are not gentle and polite like the French, nor lyrically witty like the English, but passionately gritty and intense – likely from their region’s heritage of flamenco, conquistadors, and bull fighting. An intriguing description and good enough to land Spanish Blues onto my watch list. I took some time and asked owners Katie and Bob Emmon’s how in the world do they keep up such the streak, bringing in quality acts I’ve neither heard of before. I won’t get into the details, but my bet continues: If you’ve a hankering for some good music and see a band on the lineup at Katie’s that you’ve never heard of before, give it a whirl. In fact, try it with out-of-town guests. They’ll think you’re a genius! HAPPY 1ST YEAR ON THE SCENE - Goes to the great folks at Scotty’s Pub on the Bay! With a fantastic munchies menu and an ever friendly staff, we enjoyed the first day of autumn with the Last Song of The Summer, a favorite of song of mine from one of the region’s award-winning tropical rock musical groups, the Dennis Davis Band. I like how Scotty’s has been taking root in the ‘hood, and I am looking forward to covering more live music there in the days ahead. In the house, too, was the happy hour flock of Parrot Heads who have been busy doing good things in the area. The good people had just finished up what was a “very” successful Riddles In The Sand where word has them scoring a record breaking fundraiser all for local charities. Thanksgiving still lies ahead, but our Last Song of the Summer on the first day of autumn on the first year celebration weekend with record levels of fundraising, all for good causes, has a nice ring to it. Cheers! - Continued on Page 36

Will Play For Food:
Continued From Page 38
“In December, we will have all 19 solo acts or bands from the CD play a special show at Scout Bar,” said Belmarez. “This show will be in support of the CD, and further help raise funds for the Galveston County Food Bank, which is just an amazing organization. For people still looking for ways to help, purchasing the digital download as well as attending the show at Scout will be a great way to show your support not just for live local music, but for the people of our area that really need help the most.”
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 37 GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE - of potentially what lies ahead for Seabrook came in September when we ventured into La Porte. This town has had the 146 overpass in place for a several years now, and what I’ve come to notice is now nicely the neighborhood has “decompressed.” Driving up to one of our favorite hangouts, Mainly Drinks, you can feel the hustle and bustle leave your body and once inside feel you’re inside one of those eclectic midtown places without the yuppy yammering. Deb takes great care of her staff, and they in turn take great care of the patrons who’ve become regulars. We took in an evening of Cold Feet unplugged to go along with a smothered lobster fries and seafood flatbread. This was one of the first bands I covered when I wandered onto the SCENE and today, like then, these guys always have a way of bringing along their fans. I could be mistaken, but I believe nothing in their set list is newer than the mid-1980s (i.e. Pretenders and Talking Heads) which puts this band into the “rocking fine scotch” genre. You don’t have to wait for Seabrook to decompress someday like La Porte, stop by and hang out at Mainly Drinks. Reservations suggested.
While the event’s date is to-be-determined, make sure to “like” the Will Play for Food album page to receive all of the latest updates, as well as the links for the digital download for its big release date in October. “It’s really a best-of as far as all of the bands in the area. So, in addition to your digital release of these 19 amazing bands, you have a sense that you are helping those in need as well through our local food bank organization,” Belmarez said. In all, this year’s Will Play for Food strives for an even greater cause; so, lend a helping hand to Harvey victims in need by purchasing the digital download this month, attend the live event in December, all the while enjoying some of the best artists the area has to offer in the process – and make sure to look out for more updates in upcoming issues of The SCENE Magazine!
IT’S A WRAP - Predictions and history suggest full recovery will take us out to three years. It’s a good thing that we’ve lots of good live music in our area, and that we have The SCENE, a place where something good is always happening. The weatherman says by the time you read this, chances are high that autumn will have arrived and along with it, our beloved patio season. To the too many of you out there still putting your lives back together and to the rest of you, too, remember to take a break and get your body & soul rejuvenated, out and about on The SCENE See you out there!

Lakewood’s Youth Sailors Out-Sailed the Competition at FWBC’s Mid-America Championships in North Texas Although the conditions weren’t great at all, results came up the opposite way with the Lakewood Team placing eight sailors in the Top 10 and claiming the overall win in the Red, Blue, White and Girls Fleet as well as winning the Regatta Overall.
overall and 1st in the Blue Fleet. The next Lakewood sailor was Zach Brown, who surprised everyone and placed 4th overall and 1st in White Fleet with Stephen Momeier closing the Top 5 after a very consistent day and getting the 3rd place in the Blue Fleet.
The 17/18 Season for the Gold and Silver Optimist Fleet officially started in last month with the celebration of the USODA Mid America Champs in Fort Worth, Dallas, and 22 sailors representing the Lakewood Team.
Next in the Top 10 finished William Baker, who got 6th overall and 2nd in White Fleet followed by Eric Jayawant in 7th and 2nd in Red Fleet, Matias Martin in 9th and Ava Anderson in 10th, who at the same time got the first girl award for the first time in her Opti career. Inside the Top 20, another Lakewood sailor, Maddie Janzen who claimed the 11th place overall, 3rd in White and 2nd in Girls and at the same time secured her spot for the 2018 Team Trials, raising the number of qualified sailors to 16.
Fort Worth Boat Club was the Yacht Club organizer, and the event was part of the TSA Circuit, which meant the Lasers, 420’s and Green Fleet participated in the competition as well. Following the routine of the summer, conditions were extremely difficult and challenging, with very shifty and puffy winds throughout the weekend that allowed the Race Committee to run only three races for the entire Regatta, all of them sailed on Saturday. Unfortunately, Sunday ended up with no racing which meant no throwout. Tony Slowik continued to show a very strong shape after a successful summer and took the overall win and the Top Red Feet sailor award after a very consistent set of races on Saturday, winning by a margin of 20 points. Following Tony was Scott Mather, who despite a 20th in the first race came back strong to finish 2nd
For the rest of the Lakewood sailors, a bit of inconsistency, UFD’s and struggle in the starts but much was learned for future Regattas. Mathieu Brown finished 21st, followed by Noah Zittrer (UFD) in 22nd and Nathan Pine in 23rd to close the Top 30. More Lakewood sailors participated with Lucas Tenrreiro in 31st (UFD), Max Bettis in 32nd (5th in the last race), Drew Gourley in 33rd, Emilie Janzen in 38th, Cole Gourley in 39th (rounded the mark first in the last race!), James Pine 40th (UFD), Brayden Benitz 45th, Tanner Ward in 50th and Anna Jayawant closing the Lakewood representation in 52nd overall.

2017 Wings Over Houston: Continued From Previous Page “Despite Hurricane Harvey and all of the challenges facing our area, our show will go on exactly as planned. We’ve been a Houston family tradition for 33 years, and in times like this, our show is a real boost for all us,” said Airshow Director Bill Roach. “The amazing U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds return under the direction of one of our own, native Lt. Col. Jason Heard from Sugar Land. We will have several new performers, a lot of our fan favorites, and some really fun ground activities including exotic cars and motorcycles. Of course, we also feature one of the largest assemblies of vintage aircraft of any show in the country.” Along with the Thunderbirds, modern military aircraft performances include a roaring show kick- off by an F-16 Fighting Falcon of the Air National Guard 138th Fighter Wing of Tulsa in a full afterburner take-off. The U.S. Navy will present a tactical demonstration of the F-18 Super Hornet VFA-122. Aerobatic pilots Elias Corey with Suzuki Airshows and Michael Wiskus of Lucas Oil Airshows will both make their Wings Over Houston debuts while fan favorite and world aerobatic champion Debbie Rihn-Harvey also will perform. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force, the always popular U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight will feature a World War II-era P-47 Thunderbolt and its newer namesake, the A-10 Thunderbolt II also known as the “Warthog.” Also flying together in an airshow for the first time will the world’s first jet fighter, a replica German ME-262, and another famed singleengine jet fighter, the British de Havilland DH-15 Vampire. Randy Ball returns to pilot the MiG-17 in a solo demonstration and will fly in the Vietnam War Tribute. Ace pilots, distinguished military veterans, and a record-holding astronaut will meet fans in the Legends & Heroes Autograph Tent. Honored guests include Lt. Col. Dick Cole, Clarence E. “Bud” Anderson, Col. Dean Caswell, Col. Joe McPhail, Capt. Royce Williams, Brig. Gen. Steve Ritchie, Major Terry Pappas, Col. Jerry Ross – and many others. Other spectacular performances and activities will include: • The Vietnam War Tribute will include F-4 Phantom II, F-100 Super Sabre, MiG-17, A-4 Skyhawk, Huey Cobra, and Skyraider 02 as well as ground action by re-enactors from the 6th Cavalry of the National U.S. Forces Museum and others. • Vintage aircraft performing and on display from various units of the Commemorative Air Force, Lone Star Flight Museum, Vietnam War Flight Museum, Lewis Collection, Cavanaugh Flight Museum and Collings Foundation. To see all most of these aircraft up close and on the ground, arrive at 8 a.m. and go straight to the warbird ramp. The area is always open until 10 a.m. but often stays open as late as 10:30 or 11 a.m. depending on show scheduling. • A large assembly of modern and vintage military aircraft will be on static display all day, including the specialized EA-18G Growler, reliable B-52 Stratofortress, the massive C-17 Globemaster III cargo plane, the multi-role F-16C Fighting Falcon, the impressive AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, the huge U.S. Coast Guard HC-130H search and rescue plane – and more. • The RE/MAX Skydiving Team will open our show, bringing the American and Texas flags to the crowd during the National Anthem. • Precision Exotics is bringing a collection of exotic vehicles to the tarmac for an exciting fan experience. • Aerobatic pilot Elias Corey – Suzuki Airshows includes not only his aerobatic performance, but also an amazing fan experience featuring Suzuki’s full range of motorcycles. • The custom-built Shockwave Jet Truck, powered by three massive J34-48 Pratt & Whitney jet engines, will scream down the runway at chilling speeds. • Before the airshow starts, Texas City Radio Control Club will demonstrate scale model radio- controlled aircraft that will amaze you with their capabilities. Members of reenactment and historical organizations set up camp, complete with authentic military vehicles, equipment and uniforms. More fun on the ground for everyone includes plenty of food, merchandise booths, children’s carnival area, aircraft simulators and more. Come early to do it all! Visit the show’s website, www.wingsoverhouston.com, for tickets, latest updates and advisories, transportation and parking information, and advice on what to wear and bring.

ART DOLL HOUSE “Most people assume I’ve been making dolls all By Kelley Dawson my life; I haven’t. I never played with dolls as a child much to the chagrin of my mom and grandmother,” acknowledged doll artist, Marsha Krohn. She made her first art doll nine years ago, during a polymer clay doll construction workshop. Krohn declared, “I was hooked. It took over my life from there.” She disclosed the reason why she took a doll-making class was due to conversations her husband had with a coworker.
Featured Artist:
MARSHA KROHN
“My husband and I were living in Louisiana at the time, and his coworker’s wife ran a doll shop,” told Krohn. Apparently, the coworker stated the shop was very lucrative, and his wife made enough money to pay off her parents’ home. Krohn said she then researched doll-making on the internet. “I thought I’d never be happy making the same doll over and over again.” She found a teacher that specialized in creating one-of-kind dolls and attended the workshop. Krohn has been making art dolls ever since, though, she admits, “I have yet to pay off someone’s house.” Her dolls truly are exceptional. Their uncommon often exaggerated features remain familiar, yet haunting. The countless details including pose, color, hair, or specific shreds in the fabric embodies each doll’s personality. Krohn shared she explores with other mediums such as fabrics and paper clay. She informed, “You have to be capable to do hair and paint makeup. It requires quite a few techniques and materials to work with which suits me. I don’t like the same over and over.” Krohn finds reward for her creativity is in people’s reactions to her art dolls. She expressed, “I enjoy standing next to someone at a gallery asking how I created a doll or what was the inspiration.” Krohn revealed, “I’m inspired by many things like nature or sometimes just a word or turn of a phrase. It pops in my head; that needs to be a doll.” Current events also influence Krohn. She recently designed a Harvey doll. She explained while watching the hurricane radar tracking the storm she saw the colors whirling around and thought she could recreate it with fabric. She said, “It helped me to keep my wits about me during the uncertainty of the storm.” Krohn appreciates the plain satisfaction of the creative process not just the result. She mentioned the process with every piece involves experimentation and solving engineering problems like holding a certain pose. Krohn stated, “It forced me to learn anatomy, but I don’t allow a realistic human figure to limit my creativity. I take liberties.” Her art dolls tend to be elongated or have extra-long legs. She added, “It is still believable. I want to make [the doll] look like it really could live and breathe; but not strictly human-like.” - Continued on Page 23

The Addams Family Haunts
A perfect timing as fall rolls in and Halloween approaches, Pasadena Little Theatre is opening their 63rd season with The Addams Family, A New Musical Comedy, by Marshall Brookman and Rick Elice with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. In this kooky, upside-down world of the Addams Family, to be sad is to be happy, to feel pain is to feel joy, and death and suffering are the stuff of their dreams. Nonetheless, this quirky family still has to deal with many of the same challenges faced by any other family, including the spookiest nightmare faced by every family, the Addams kids are growing up. The Addams families have lived by their unique values for hundreds of years and Gomez and Morticia, the patriarch and matriarch of the weird clan would be only too happy to continue living that way. Their dark, macabre, beloved daughter Wednesday, however, is now an 18-year-old young woman who is ready for a life of her own. She has fallen in love with a sweet, smart boy from a normal, respectable Ohio family and to make matters worse, she has invited the boy’s family to the Addams’ home for dinner. In one fateful, hilarious night, secrets are disclosed, relationships are tested, and the Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations, change. The outstanding casts in this new musical comedy are Michael Rodriguez, who plays Gomez Addams, Amy Morneau plays Morticia Addams, Luci Galloway plays Wednesday Addams, Matthew Hailey is Pugsly Addams, Steve Walker is Uncle Fester, Robert Wise is Lurch and Janet Sharpley is Grandma. The director is Craig Trauschke, AD is Rose Trauschke, music director is Crystal Mata and choreographer is Danielle Knight. This production opens on Friday, October 13 and continues weekends through October 29. Friday and Saturday show times are 8 p.m.; Sunday matinees are at 2:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online and offer reduced prices for advance purchases, students and seniors. On Thursday, October 26 catch an evening show at a special rate. PLT, located at 4318 Allen-Genoa Road in Pasadena, is the oldest community theatre in the Houston area, and to open a 63rd season is remarkable. To purchase tickets, make reservations or for more information call their box office at 713-941-1758, or log on to www.pasadenalittletheatre.org. Boo! - Domino Taylor

night games. Other drink specials are offered throughout the week such as Monday wine specials (halfprice bottles all day), Texas Tuesday (specials on all Texas beer and wine), Happy Hour specials (Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.) and Power Hour specials (Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.)
“We strive to keep it fresh, not just our ingredients, but our menu items as well, catering to the local customers when we come up with new dishes like our new “Gator Eggs” appetizer we created in honor of the Dickinson Gators (the high school mascot),” said Buyher. Gator Eggs are hand-made macaroni and cheese balls, stuffed with prosciutto, shrimp and crab mix, panko breaded and fried, served with horseradish caper aioli. Another new appetizer Buyher has created for the menu is the Spicy Italian Eggrolls. Made in-house, the eggrolls are stuffed with Italian sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, jalapeño, mozzarella and pasta, served with marinara sauce. New entrees include the Blue Cheese Crusted Rib Eye Steak (12-ounce rib eye, topped with a Portobello mushroom demi glace sauce, served with rosemary potatoes and fresh Italian green beans) and the Beef Cannelloni (large pasta tubes filled with a delicious mix of ground beef and blend of sautéed celery, carrots, onion, garlic and herbs, topped with a suga rosa meat sauce and mozzarella cheese.)
Because of the relaxed atmosphere at Gio’s, combined with the upscale, modern and Tuscan-style décor, Gio’s Flying Pizza and Pasta is the perfect place for a romantic date, a night out with friends, a family dinner or just throwing back some beers while watching the Texans play. But Gio’s goes beyond the brick and mortar and offers catering packages for large gatherings off-site, such as birthdays, weddings, and business functions or church and school events. Diana is the first point of contact and often serves at the event, ensuring top-quality food service. For those wanting to pick up large trays of food for an event and feed a minimum of 10 people without busting the budget, Gio’s is happy to also provide plates, cutlery, serving utensils, beverages, ice and cups. And if you can’t pick it up, Gio’s will even deliver.
Every dish is prepared from scratch using only the freshest ingredients. Pizza to go is their most popular menu item, and with gourmet toppings like grilled chicken, meatballs, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, provolone, feta and ricotta cheeses, as well as all the usual pizza toppings, it’s no wonder Gio’s pizza pies are flying out the door. Delivery is available within a 6-mile radius from the restaurant, and Gio’s is happy to fill the order with any of the dishes from their expansive menu. From classics like spaghetti and lasagna, to specialty dishes like Pork Valdostana (grilled pork rib eye stuffed with provolone cheese, topped with artichokes and mushrooms in their valdostana sauce, served with rosemary potatoes and a sautéed vegetable medley) and Penne Civitavecchia (Penne pasta tossed with diced grilled chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, feta cheese, garlic, basil & olive oil), not to mention popular items like a halfpound burger and a variety of paninis and hoagies to choose from, Gio’s has something that’s sure to please even the most picky eater.
Whatever the occasion, Gio’s will continue to surprise their regular customers with more improvements planned in the coming weeks. Diana summed it up best, “We always want our guests to feel welcome and enjoy our delicious food with their friends and family in a relaxed atmosphere. We appreciate everyone who has supported us throughout the years and look forward to continued success for many years to come.”
The newly renovated bar is lined with six large HDTVs, making it a great spot to watch the game, and happy hour is served during Monday and Sunday

Gio’s Flying Pizza and Pasta – More than What’s in the Name By Shawn Domingues On any given day or night, disks of dough can be seen flying through the air at Gio’s Flying Pizza and Pasta. Owners Steve and Diana Gunnett are very hands-on and passionate about their restaurant, their employees and the clientele they serve. They have been updating and remodeling the restaurant, a little at a time, over the years, to achieve
