TAME FURY: A True “Gift of Life” By Sarah Piña Ace Frehley of KISS. Brett Michaels. Buckcherry. Night Ranger. What might these big-name musicians have in common in the Clear Lake area? Faithful followers of the southern Texas rock circuit would have one clear answer: Tame Fury, a band who has since their inception been a support act in Houston for some of the nation’s biggest rock acts. The hard/modern rock-influenced group based out of Houston formed back in 2013, when lead vocalist Michael McVey — who has since earned the title of People's Choice award for Best Hard Rock Singer in Texas — was invited to open for rock icons known as Dokken. One call led to another, first to well-known drummer on the circuit Phred Williams, then to lead guitarist Mark Bankston, and the seed was planted for the group known now as Tame Fury.

“It all happened really fast,” recalled McVey. “We went (opening for Ace Frehley of KISS) from having this new band to writing all new songs in a matter of only three weeks!” The current lineup includes Michael McVey (vocals); Mark Bankston (guitar, vocals); Brandon Williams (guitar, vocals); Phred Williams (drums, vocals); and Eric Villarreal (bass).

Indeed, Tame Fury blasted onto the SCENE with such fiery vigor that in that time period, they were already opening for Brett Michaels, and several national rock headliners which followed, including Austin John (former lead vocalist of Hinder), Skid Row, L.A. Guns, guitarist Jake Lee (Ozzy Osbourne’s band), Stryper, and Dangerous Toys, to name a few. Success, however, came to a halt in 2014. Phred suffered a massive heart attack, and remained on life support for the next year as he awaited a donor. After more than a dozen surgeries and months in ICU, Phred received a heart transplant in May of the following year, and in June – determined as ever – rejoined his bandmates, who he considers his family. - Continued on Page 40

Your Neighborhood Bar With an Edge

There’s Always Something Going on at OL’ MOTHER’S SPEAKEASY By Shawn Domingues True, Ol’ Mother’s isn’t the swanky retro lounge paying tribute to the illegal watering holes operating during the Prohibition era, but the term “speakeasy” suits this unassuming bar in Bacliff, nonetheless. Back in the day, people of all races and from all walks of life would gather in these illicit establishments to drink alcohol; they would mix and mingle, drink and be merry… together, with few or no problems at all. The speakeasy was taboo, the patrons were rebellious and the bootleggers were brave enough to break the law, risking their freedom to supply the public with a vice they were forced to give up. This “outlaw spirit” is alive and well at Ol’ Mother’s Speakeasy, a neighborhood bar with a diverse crowd. From bikers to businessmen and rockers to rednecks, from “the girl next door” to the blonde bombshell, everyone is welcome, and they all get along; as one patron says, “This is a drama-free zone. There’s always something going on, and if you can’t have fun at Ol’ Mother’s… you’re just not fun at all.” That’s not an exaggeration. There is something going on every day of the week at Ol’ Mother’s. On Monday, they offer happy hour prices all day (from noon to 2 a.m.), free pool and 50¢ wings. Monday is also Industry Night with drink specials for those in the service industry (T.A.B.C. certification required to receive server discounts) and Instant Karma Karaoke starts at 8 p.m. Tuesday is Steak Night (Ribeye cooked to order, baked potato, one side, and one domestic beer for $15), with live acoustic music (5:30 to 9:30 p.m.), and Texas Tuesday drink specials ($1 off Texas beers, liquor and wine). On Wednesday, they host a 501 soft tip dart tournament (starting at 8 p.m.), $3.50 well drinks, 75¢ wings and $1 chilidogs. Thursday is Taco Thursday (two tacos for $1) with Thirsty Thursday drink specials and Instant Karma Karaoke (starts at 8 p.m.) Friday they offer $6 burgers (served with fries or tots), drink and shot specials and Instant Karma Karaoke (9 p.m.). On Saturday, they have $5 quesadillas (cheese or chicken) and a variety of drink and shot specials. - Continued on Page 38

Craft breweries continue to open at a brisk pace across Texas, and BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival is the perfect place to sip, savor, and explore the real meaning of the craft. Whether you are a craft-loyal drinker looking for inspiration, or just a newbie finding your way, BrewMasters is the ultimate event for experiencing the distinctive world of craft beer. Clifton McDerby, Executive Director of Food & Fine Time Productions, Inc. explained “our vision has always been to make sure that loyalists and newcomers to this event experience the widest selection of craft beers available at any Texas festival, along with brew education and an introduction to new brews coming available for the first time at BrewMasters.” McDerby continued, “this year we are planning pop-up tastings. Guests will be pleasantly surprised by this addition, we feel certain.” But BrewMasters is more than just great tasting craft beer, “it is a place to meet the people who make the craft beer industry a force to be reckoned with,” McDerby added. - Continued on Page 38

Loose Notes by Andy Eng

Did you catch Thrilllist.com’s recent survey ranking Tookie’s cheeseburger as #1 in Houston and #21 in the US? Like many of you, I’ve been out of synch with things following Harvey, glued to the tube watching our hometown baseball team, encouraged with our hometown football team’s new QB and likely missed lots of what’s happening around town these days. Nonetheless, we were able to score some great live music. Let’s rundown some of what all that went down.

GALVESTON SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL - While we were going to press with the October issue, the folks who bring us the popular Pirates and Poets shows at T-Bone Tom’s put together a dandy in late September, a three-day, three-venue music festival featuring local, regional and national singer songwriters of the Coastal & Western persuasion. Such festivals are associated with beach communities in Florida and such a show in our Clear Lake area was a first of its type. Joining forces with Railean Rum, the Galveston Parrotheads, Cabo and T-Bone Tom’s, this event had a feel of SXSW with non-stop music happening at multiple locations in the area without the madness. With proceeds from the event directed to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, the good karma in the air mixed well with the delightful music from the many “super talented” musicians through the impressive Bose sound reinforcement. What typical listeners find enjoyable at songwriter shows are the stories behind the song – often purposeful muses of everyday life of everyday people, and the “up-close and personal” connection between the performers and audience. Flying solo, it was physically impossible covering all of the acts happening at the different venues at the same time. Based on the sets we sampled, I score the event an overall success and a good base to build on. At the Railean Rum Stage at Cabo, we joined up with the Lakewood Yacht Club sailing league (another popular SCENE event) for a picture perfect patio session – Even the musicians were impressed with the view. At T-Bone Tom’s, the fantastic staff did not miss a beat handling their usual-packed house dinner crowd and the large flocks of live music-loving patrons. I’m giving this inaugural event the “Newcomer Award of the Year” and definitely looking forward to similar future events. Cheers! - Continued on Page 37

Ol’ Mother’s: Continued From Page 47 “It’s always a good time at Ol’ Mother’s,” said veteran bartender Kelli Roe, “But our regulars are what makes this place really special. We have a completely diverse crowd and everyone gets along, which makes it fun!” The regular customers at Ol’ Mother’s seem to be more like family. They are so loyal, in fact, that when the previous owners decided to close the doors to the bar, it was three of the regulars who got together and bought their favorite hangout to keep the bar alive. Since taking over, they have made a few changes to the bar they hold dear to their hearts and plan to continue making improvements. New menu items have been added, such as chicken quesadillas, fried pickles, garlic Parmesan tator tots, fried zucchini and even fried Twinkies. The customers really love the pizza and wings. Insider tip: With new and different flavors to try out (Dirty Girl, Lemon Pepper, hot and mild) Wednesday is the best day to order wings, for 75¢ a wing. Customers can mix and match and try them all without having to order six of the same flavor. Additional dart machines have been added to the dart room and their weekly dart tournaments have been attracting more and more players. Saturday, November 18, Ol’ Mother’s will be hosting their Calcutta Dart Tournament with a $500 prize to the winner. Sign up is at 1:30 p.m. with the tournament starting at 3 p.m. Biker Night is on the last Sunday of every month. Bikers come from near and far, on their choppers and hogs to take advantage of the $15 bike wash and special discounts given to those who ride their motorcycles to Ol’ Mother’s, filling up the designated motorcycle parking lot in front of the building. Non-bikers are also welcome. Additional parking has been added in the adjacent field behind the building, so the customers with four wheels won’t have to miss out on the fun. Everyone is always welcome in this neighborhood bar “where everybody knows your name” (think Cheers with an edge), and everybody gets along; and a happy-go-lucky vibe permeates the place.

LOOSE NOTES: Local Live Music Guide

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 39 PATIO SEASON - is here and not a day too soon! I’m often told I have a great gig getting to wander through venues lugging along my camera bag. In October, I pulled a sneak and tried things out as a normal patron. We had out-of-town guests with an appetite after a full day at Space Center Houston and there was no way I could handle cooking for them all. What to do? We loaded everybody into two huge SUVs, parked it in the new Lighthouse District parking lot and strolled into T-Bone Tom’s right in the middle of the dinner hour. Natives know this place can really pack a dinner crowd and my guests were thinking what a dubious idea. No reservations? “No worry…” A table for 12? “What’s the name?” A spot where we can watch the band? “We’ll see what we can do….” The short 20-minute wait gave us a chance for much needed visiting and before we knew it, the staff had arranged three adjacent tables and our group felt like they were special. Knowing our guests would need some time to go through the menu, we ordered up appetizers - two Sampler Plates and plates of Armadillo and Shark Eggs, which in many circles, is an adequate meal in itself. Did I mention the place was packed with a full house dinner crowd? Our server, Andrew, was fantastic with our large party and the kitchen did a fabulous job preparing and serving up our diversified meals. Musical wizard, Van Wilks was on the lineup and was a scratch. No worries as our out-of-towners got to enjoy music from Still Cruisin’, “a ten piece ‘Dance Horn Band’ that played live music of all types from R&B, Rock, Disco, and Pop for all occasions and every celebration.” The instrument section for this band was extremely powerful and made a great impression. What impressed them most was not watching the dancers (young and old), the scrumptious vittles, the crisp service, the Astros on the tube, or

the outdoor patio setting. It was that it was all of the above together in one place, at one time, and without reservations…. Thanks T-Bone Tom’s!!! We had a wonderful time! TWO MONTHS RUNNING - I stopped into Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack and for two months in a row, noticed they’ve gotten serious about bringing in some incredibly good live music talents. This time around, the audience got to enjoy the duet of Billy Bourbon and Chris Bergeron, two veteran musical talents who have an uncanny ability of taking any cover song, reinterpreting it, and totally making it their own. Perhaps the only other group I know locally who is as good at doing this would be the Bodacious TaTas – Bourbon & Bergeron are this good… Billy Bourbon was one of the first talents I covered when I arrived on the SCENE, playing down at the old Green Parrot. Over the years, as you would expect with any fine aged whiskey, his music has truly become uniquely recognizable as his own. Bergeron, in my opinion, is amongst the top shelf keyboard talents in the area that not merely plays the boogie woogie melodies, but able to coax out a soulful expression from the electronic ivory keys - something if you listen closely for, won’t find, unless it’s Chris on the keys. I’m not sure who the music booking manager is a Crazy Alan’s but whoever that person is, they do have an ear. Gratitudes! OPEN MIC - Readers know I’m a fan of the local open mic action. Katie’s Open Mic is unique having different hosts rotating duties each Sunday for a nice variety of quality playing for listening music lover’s listening pleasure. In October, we checked out the action with James Wilhite and the Classix hosting. - Cont. on Page 35

Never was that truer when looking for a new guitarist for the lineup. The band agreed that Phred’s son Brandon could be a good fit—and now, he’s a permanent member who lives a lifestyle a little differently than his high school peers. PEARLAND

“Brandon had a big orchestra concert one time in middle school that just so happened to coincide with one of our shows with Ace Frehley. He had a hard time convincing his teacher that he had a gig that night with a member of KISS, so I had to go up to the school and vouch for him,” Williams recalled. “Can you imagine being in 8th grade and having to tell your teacher you may not make it because you’re playing with one of the biggest rock bands in the world that night too!?” Williams laughed.

“We’re currently working on our first album called Gift of Life, aptly named because of the new lease on life I had after my heart attack. I never take one day for granted, not one day of waking up. We all feel that way, and it reflects in the songs we are writing and performing. We can’t wait to share this album with our fans next spring!” Phred said. You can catch Tame Fury next at 18th Street Pier on November 4, performing along with Michael Graves of The Misfits. However, now is the time to secure tickets for the next huge show, when they perform once again with Ace Frehley of KISS in December at Scout Bar! “This is a show you do NOT want to miss! Now is the time to get your tickets, because it will sell quickly! It will be one electrifying, rocking show—everything you expect from a KISS show and then some!” Tame Fury will open for Ace Frehley of Kiss on Sunday, December 17 at Scout Bar. Doors open at 6 p.m.; show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 to $40. Head to Scout Bar’s website to grab your tickets for the show before they sell out — or message the band directly via their Facebook page for discounted tickets to upcoming shows! — and when you go, make sure to tell them The SCENE sent you!

LOOSE NOTES: Local Live Music Guide

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 37

James was flying without his signature Stratocasters opting to get some time in on the Tele. Bob Emmons sat in on a few songs holding down the groove on bass with percussionist, Joe Campise on the kit and a “pro set” lineup of musicians sharing time on the stage. Perhaps one of the finer magical moments was the throw-down group launching into a set honoring the late Tom Petty, which turned into a heartfelt jam with each of the seasoned talents taking a turn at the wheel, and transforming the sunny Sunday afternoon into a bonafide concert. It was splendid! We’ve been following Wilhite for the past several years demonstrating an ability to play anything and everything. Since moving recently into the city, James has dedicated his music to the blues where he gets to showcase not only his own talents, but also his ability to share the stage with many other musicians, bringing out the best in all. I’m a fan of all kinds of music. What I like about the blues most is what I heard from Mick Jagger, “blues has its conventions, if followed, allows musicians from anywhere in the world to join in and make music.” And making music is what goes down at Katie’s every Sunday afternoon at their Open Mic. Check it out! SHRIMP, SHRIMP AND MORE SHRIMP - Our local Food Festivals are on my list of favorite events in our area. While the seasonal mudbug festivals have been on a rocket ride in popularity in recent years, it is the “shrimp” from our own local waters that supports, I believe, a larger livelihood for many. And so in October, we celebrated our beloved local morsels from the Gulf at the 44th Annual Space Center Rotary’s Shrimporee, at Clear Lake Park’s Landolt Pavilion.

THE SCENE

This year, the shrimp were HUMUNGOUS and in true Texas style, served with delicious portions of BBQ brisket and sausage. I’ve seen lots of fundraising auctions in the area over the years – Space Center Rotary has perhaps the largest action happening with nearly a quarter of the pavilion for silent auction and the rest of the pavilion set up for live auction action. This event is one of the smoothest I’ve ever seen and ran by an army of student volunteers from the Clear Lake area high schools. Patio season is here. Get out and be a part! VOLCANO ROOM - Earlier in the year at the Joe Palermo benefit, I got a chance to hear Micah Matthews and thought “this chap packs one set of pipes.” Able to carry a register up there with Steve Perry, Matthews made it onto my watch list and a follow up was in order. That opportunity happened in October at the Volcano Room, where a nice crowd gathered in attendance for Matthew’s birthday bash and his band, Turning Point, a Baker’s Street circuit group. This band has undergone some lineup changes recently and presently on firm foundation with a wide ranging modern day song list. Perhaps one of the most laid back singers I’ve ever seen, Matthew’s has an easy going persona having me thinking Perry Como / Tony Bennett / Frank Sinatra in a t-shirt. The show that evening was dialed in at perfect audience-pleasing sound levels, conducive for an enjoyable evening. I suspect we will be hearing more from this local cover band in the months ahead. They’ve been on my watch list. Put them on yours.

TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE - Hard core industrial late ’80s rock was in full force at Scout Bar with the 30th Anniversary Tour of My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, a notorious highly-experimental and influential band out of LA (via Chicago). We arrived early enough to catch The Hunger opening for TKK. The Scout Bar stage was essentially 1/3rd the depth of the nor-

SWAN SONG TOUR - We’ve a really good thing going down in the area and it was in disbelief when I read that Rat Ranch posted their schedule of their final shows as a band. These cats are one of the areas hardest working bands that averaged 200 shows a year across the great Houston Metroplex and amongst the best at getting the dancefloor into a frenzy past the 11 setting. It’s my belief that this band, with their originals and their energetic stage presence, had they happened in the ’60s or ’70s, would have gone national. Nonetheless, their farewell tour has been one incredible party and in October, we caught their show at Jackie’s Brickhouse. There’s something about this truly multi-purpose location! It’s never stopped changing over the years I’ve stopped by, and it’s never stopped being a place for any and all. Walking through the complex, there are more centers of activity going on everywhere at any one time, making this one Texas BIG entertainment venue. I’ve a hunch we will someday see this place mentioned at national and international circles. In the mean time, go catch a Rat Ranch show... NOW!

mal stage which essentially put the band face-to-face with the audience. The attendance for The Hunger this evening was larger than at the Harvey afflicted show last month. This time, more than many who took in deep water were able to take a break from their recovery to turn out for this show. Despite having taken a recent hit to their homes and pocketbooks, these fans were determined to get their Hunger fix and the band rewarded these stalwart fans with a dynamite show. Their set list was predominantly of their songs from the early ’90s. The evening’s lineup started Richie Hey on the programming/keys along with Slay and Huston on the kit and axe, which allowed the Wilson brothers to deploy their patented dual lead vocal assault. - Continued on Page 32

LOOSE NOTES: Local Live Music Guide

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 33 Their Pre-Labor Day show was “outstanding!” This evening, they clearly knocked it out of the park. And with the audience completely satiated, it was time to settle in for a grooving evening with The Thrill Kill Kult... According to the band, their main interest is simply “Stayin’ alive…” Seemed reasonable… It appears the TKK has accomplished this by playing a music tempo conducive to lower wear and tear on the body. I can see this band going well into the million mile range, and submit to readers to consider likewise. Researching this band, I thought it was interesting how TKK has employed the services of over 40 “dubious” musicians over the decade. Chatting with fans in the crowd, I found at least several who have been attending

live TKK shows since the ’80s. That’s longer in years than many on the SCENE are of age! IT’S A WRAP - Thank you to those who took time to reach out and share stories and your continued optimism. You’re not alone and we will all get through this. Also, thanks again to all of you who continue pitching in helping out acquaintances and strangers alike who are still recovering from their recent losses and keepsakes. Holiday season lies ahead and time to reflect, take stock on this past year, and gather with family and friends. Keep a copy of The SCENE handy, you’ll be the hero when the gang arrives and needing a place to go! See you out there!

Osborne revealed she is most excited about the trip to meet the people and hug them all for making an effort to take a break in their life to meet her and paint with her. She said, “That is humbling.” Osborne confessed as the mother of two boys, she is also excited to catch up on sleep during the ten hour bus ride and 15 hour plane ride to the Bay Area of Texas. “I’m just amazed with everything that has happened. It always stuns me the reactions of people,” stated Osborne. She mentioned one fan called her the “resin queen.” She added, “I’ve not had one negative feedback. I like my paintings, but I see healing. I can see me in a way. It’s normal for me. I can’t understand what others see.” Osborne’s art resin is vibrant and engaging. Her own healing art can be the

It is reminiscent of Pablo Picasso’s quote, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Osborne’s own thoughts on inspiring people is modest. She affirmed, “Inspiring [people], that’s amazing. I’m just being myself. I’m honest and genuine. I wear no mask.” See Osborne paint on her Youtube channel at ‘Monica Osborne International resin artist’ or visit her Facebook group ‘Go With the Flow with Monica Osborne’ or universalartpigments to view additional resin art.

GOING WITH THE FLOW ARTS By Kelley Dawson This month, Norwegian artist Monica Osborne travels for the first time to the United States. The International resin artist will visit Kemah, Seabrook, and other bay areas to share her extraordinary talents and her heartwarming story. Osborne explains resin art or liquid art is rock hard and very shiny. It consists of epoxy resin, a hardener, and pigments (colored powders). The combination of resin with a hardener produces an artistic chemical reaction; that combined with Osborne’s design techniques generates intriguing pieces. She uses a torch to eliminate any bubbles that may form in the resin and a blow dryer to create lacing, movement, and special effects. Her pursuit of creating art began four years ago following an unprovoked assault at her work. Osborne developed PTSD with anxiety and depression.

She told, “The depression was very severe. I needed to do something.” Times were also difficult for her family financially, but they agreed to skip a bill one month in order for Osborne to purchase her first art kit of beeswax and pigments. She experimented with art for three years and then found acrylics and art resin. “I was sold,” she said. According to Osborne painting is healing. She disclosed, “I never ever, ever painted to be famous or sell my paintings. If it hadn’t been for painting, I’d be gone. I wouldn’t have survived.” Osborne joined various art groups to share and learn. She started her own Facebook group and has amassed quite a following with over 800 members from around the world. The group shares ideas, creations, and even posts live demonstrations. Osborne declared she is proud of the group because it doesn’t just encompass art; it’s also personal. “It’s beautiful to see every one care for each other in a world that is sometimes cold,” she shared. A local member of the group, Dew Harvey, suggested Osborne visit her for a painting party and thus initiated Osborne’s first trip to the United States. She expressed, “I was in shock for couple of days. I talked to my husband and he said go for it.” Osborne and Harvey then planned a multi-day “Monica Fest” event with meet and greet and painting party. In just two days, 40 people enrolled. “For me, it’s unreal,” admitted Osborne. She informed that artists and fans from 14 states, South America, and Norway will be attending. - Continued on Page 23

Other menu standouts are the Monte Cristo (hand-battered, fried and served with a homemade raspberry jam that has red pepper flakes in it for that extra kick), BeerBattered Fish and Chips (cod filets hand-battered in Samuel Adams and their own special seasonings served with fries and coleslaw), Buffalo Mac & Cheese (mac & cheese with spicy buffalo fried chicken, topped with cheddar jack cheese, ranch dressing and green onions), housemade Shepherd’s Pie and several different variations of their half lb. burger (make it a Big Arse Burger and upgrade to the 10-ounce hand-pressed Angus beef patty). layout of the room into several different private party areas, which can also include a section on the patio with the floor-toceiling folding windows that open to the outside.

The food is definitely “above-the-bar pub grub,” but this is an Irish-themed sports bar, eat-ertainment restaurant after all, and the bar offers an enormous selection to wash it all down. With 63 beers on tap, an extensive selection of whiskey, wine and signature cocktails such as the Tilted Tea, Caribbean Kilt or Texas Paloma, it’s likely that at least one of the toasts found in the Kilt Crafted Drink Menu will be recited more than once every night. The wine list will be expanding in the coming months.

Which brings us to the massive resort-style patio. With fire and water features, comfy lounge chairs and couches, this outdoor oasis offers guests the opportunity to relax and enjoy the weather. It might be easy for guests to forget they came to watch the game, if there weren’t large HDTVs throughout the patio so they don’t miss a single play. There’s even a bag toss game to help pass the time or entertain the kiddos.

It’s obvious from the custom wood tables and bar that include charging stations next to every purse hook, that a lot of thought went into the design, layout and décor of the Tilted Kilt, giving it that upscale feel. To further enhance the guest experience, Croft designed the keyhole-shaped tables specifically so that groups of 8-10 people could all sit together and still be able to interact with everyone in their group. The 24-top Captain’s tables are curved and custom made to fit the layout of the building. There are booths along the walls in one section and cocktail tables in another making it easy to adjust the

Reservations are available up to a certain time before the game starts, or go “big league” with 20 people or more to receive special VIP treatment that really knocks it out of the park. Because the room was designed to be easily split into sections, Tilted Kilt is a fantastic venue for parties of all sizes. Tony’s Pizzeria: Cont. From Previous Page Jarmash’s passion for pizza comes from his father, who has been popping pizzas in the oven for over 35 years. Jarmash is excited and proud to share his father’s recipes with hungry Texans. Jarmash aims to please. “I’ll make anything. You request it; I’ll make it, no matter how bizarre the request,” Jarmash said. His most recent special order was a poutine pizza! The pizzas are baked fresh in a hot 650-degree stone brick oven. Crust options are thin crust, hand-tossed, stuffed crust, whole-wheat crust, or a gluten-free crust. Tony’s also makes a deep-dish pizza. It’s hard to determine if Tony’s style of pizza is Chicago-style or New York style. “Some people come in and call our slices of pizza New York style and other people think our deep dish is Chicago-style. I just like to think of it as Tony’s style of pizza,” Tony said with a smile.

Breakfast items are available at Tony’s and are served all day. Man’ouche, which is a Lebanese flatbread, is topped with fresh herbs, mozzarella cheese or flavorful ground beef. Yes, this is breakfast! The breakfast pizza is another excellent choice, fully loaded with egg, cheese and bacon, sausage or ham. Tony’s is BYOB so the weekends are busy with guests, bottles of wine and coolers of beer. There is also a secret dessert menu! No menu is posted, so guests must specifically ask for these items. Try a fresh, chewy brownie, triple chocolate pizza, or a cinnamon or s’mores pizza to satisfy that sweet tooth. Delivery is available for orders over $10, and as long as Tony’s is open, they’re delivering. Or get out and stop by Tony’s Pizzeria and become part of one of the newest pizza families by the lake.

Unlike many popular pizza chains, Tony’s Pizzeria makes its chicken wings from fresh, not frozen chicken. Choose from hot, mild, honey garlic or barbeque, and be sure to grab a handful of napkins for these saucy wings! The wings are not breaded and can also be baked instead of fried, upon request. Fresh pasta dishes will soon be added to the menu, so stay tuned!

Tony’s Pizzeria

Clear Lake Hidden Gem Serves up Pizzas & Poutine! By Jennifer Fuller Grab a taste of Italy and Canada all at one little pizza shop! Brick oven pizzas, stuffed calzones and Canadian favorites like poutine, donair and man’ouche are all available at Tony’s Pizzeria off of Bay Area Blvd. Never heard of poutine? Poutine is a mound of crispy French fries covered in brown gravy and melted cheese. The gravy at Tony’s is made from scratch. Other versions of poutine served here add bacon, beef, chicken or donair meat. The donair meat is made in-house with a special mix of spices. The meat is made into a meatloaf and shaved thin with a deli slicer. Donair is very similar to gyro meat. Good old-fashioned love and romance brought Canadian Tony Jarmash to Texas. After years in a long distance relationship, Jarmash decided to move closer to his now-wife, Luciana, and bring his talent to the States. After owning a pizza place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for four years, it felt right to open up shop here. Tony’s Pizzeria just celebrated its one-year anniversary on October 31. This young couple has a passion for food. Every morning, they are in the kitchen chopping fresh vegetables and making pizza dough and marinara from scratch. Even the mozzarella cheese is freshly shredded. - Continued on Next Page

Bring the family for a is an Irish-themed combination of the two; and alfun-filled day (kilts are optional). though the “Kilt Girls” are dressed in the Tartan (plaid) patterned uniforms, this public house is more than just another “breastraunt,” made evident by the presence of male bartenders and busboys, who also wear kilts, although theirs are much longer than the mini skirts worn by the female servers. Regardless of what they are wearing, the Kilt Girls are basically entertainers, eager to put a smile on every customer’s face. “We want to be a local gathering spot for “eat-ertainment,” said owner Dearl Croft, “Our primary focus is on serving fantastic food and creating a fun and friendly environment for guests of all ages and genders.” The scratch kitchen uses only the freshest ingredients and makes every dish to order – no prepackaged pub grub here. NICK IS NOW COOKING GREAT

Restaurant Concept: Straight outta Brooklyn! From the people who brought Pomodoro’s Cucina Italiana to League City, comes this New York-Style Deli. Owner Louis Floridia grew up in Brooklyn and his fondest memories were meeting his dad for lunch when he was working at

the Brooklyn Waterfront. There were a lot of delis to choose from in the area, but Louis’ favorite was the one that served the sloppiest sandwiches. It has always stood out in his mind because their sandwiches were the best he’s ever had. Wanting to recreate the deli he remembered from his childhood, Louis and his wife Jo opened Sloppy Nick’s Brooklyn Deli and decorated it with memorabilia from the city they both grew up in. Louis’s sister, Angelina Tropea, has been brought on board to run this family-owned and operated business and makes the homemade classic Italian cookies from scratch, using their grandmother’s recipes. Specialties: Hot and cold deli sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs with unlimited Sloppy Toppings to choose from. Create your own: Choose the meat and cheese (wide selection of Boars Head brand); choose the bread (Italian, ciabatta, brioche, rye, white or wheat); choose the Sloppy Spread (sundried tomato, pesto, mayo, olive oil mayo, roasted garlic mayo, sriracha mayo, yellow mustard, spicy mustard or Italian vinaigrette) and choose the Sloppy Toppings (sun dried tomatoes, hot peppers, shredded carrots, banana peppers, spicy slaw, artichoke hearts, red onions, relish, pickled beets, roasted garlic, roasted peppers, spinach, sprouts,
