The staff is excited to be welcoming their friends and neighbors back into their dining room. They expressed, "Thank you for all the kind words of encouragement and gratitude and most of all thank you for your patience and continued prayers! Now come on out and enjoy your breakfast, lunch and dinner with us!" Kimon Psarovarkas told The SCENE they are excited to find some normalcy and are grateful for all the community support since their re-opening on November 16 (at 5:30 a.m.) Established in 1994, the stand-alone restaurant is located at 1026 Marina Bay Drive in Clear Lake Shores and known for their casual atmosphere, friendly service and delicious dishes. MARIO’S PIZZA & PASTA prepares for New Year, New Home By Shawn Domingues Best known for their experienced pizza makers tossing dough high in the air and handing out dough to kids as they walk in the door, Mario’s Pizza & Pasta has provided a family-friendly, fun atmosphere to their guests for more than 40 years, and will continue to do so when they make the big move to their new home in the Seabrook Center building (2100 E. NASA Parkway) in January 2018. The new larger location will offer several exciting changes such as an outdoor patio, brand new facilities, tables, chairs and booths for the dining room, and a few new items will be added to the menu as well. “We are really excited about the new dining space. The important things will remain the same: the employees and the same great food we are known for and our salad bar will still be a great treat for every guest,” said owner Will Whitney. The move to the NASA Parkway location is because of the State Highway 146 expansion that will begin construction in 2018. But that’s not the only expansion on the horizon, as Mario’s will be increasing their delivery area to include parts of Nassau Bay as well. Although there are changes ahead, the Mario’s brand will remain the same; they will still have pizza makers tossing the dough and handing it out for kids to play with, a comforting thought for those who have been eating pizza from Mario’s their entire life. - Continued on Page 18

“Our kiddos really love coming to Mario’s and getting the pizza dough. They have so much fun as they squish, pull, pound and stretch the dough, and it keeps them occupied while we wait on our food,” said customer Ma’arja Rhodes. Of course, pizza is what they are most known for (including gourmet pizzas, too), but their menu also offers many classic Italian favorites such as Lasagna, Ravioli, Fettucine Alfredo and Eggplant Parmigiana, as well as Calzones and a variety of sandwiches. Other standout menu items INSIDER TIP: If you’ve only ordered pizza from Mario’s but want to give their include Penne Con classic Italian dishes a try, go during Gamberi (fresh Gulf lunch and order one of their Daily Lunch shrimp in olive oil, Specials: Monday is Tortellini ($8.95); garlic, basil and Tuesday is Penne Con Pollo ($8.95); diced tomatoes, Wednesday is Lasagna ($8.75); tossed with penne Thursday is Fettuccine Alfredo ($8.95); pasta), Pollo Alla Friday is Chicken Parmigiana ($9.25). Operating from the old “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” adage, Mario’s Pizza & Pasta will not be changing anything about their pizza, or its ingredients and will continue to offer the same lunch specials, extensive salad bar and high standard of service that their loyal customers have come to expect from the employees at the longest running pizza restaurant in Seabrook. “We have a good original staff of people that have always stuck with us,” said employee, Ronald Hoskins. Hoskins, is just one of many long-time employees who have worked at Mario’s for more than seven years – a seemingly rare occurrence in the restaurant business. Head chef, Freddy Ramos, has been working there for more than 30 years and Will Whitney, who is now one of the owners, has been there for 22 years. With such a solid foundation of employees and 40+ years of success, Mario’s Pizza & Pasta will continue to keep the flying pizza pie of the Seabrook landscape alive and well. Mario’s is proud to have been selected for catering for many events from weddings to company lunches in the Clear Lake area and they will continue to be offering full service-catering or pick-up/delivery-only catering when they move to the new location. To contact Mario’s catering, email catering@mariosseabrook.com or call 281-474-5103 for details. If you’d like to dine at the long-time location for old time’s sake, be sure to do so in December. If you’ve never gone in before, now’s your chance! Stop by and wish them luck as they make their transition to the NASA Parkway location. Be sure to tell them The SCENE sent you!
Change is HERE for Seabrook Dining SCENE Highway 146 expansion impacting some of the longest running restaurants in the region, now By Shawn Domingues For commuters who have had to endure the relentless traffic on State Highway 146 for the past decade, or the people living in Seabrook who simply want to get to the grocery store, post office, gas station or anywhere in the immediate area between the hours of 4 to 6 p.m., the Highway 146 expansion is a long-overdue, saving grace bringing desperately needing reprieve. For some of the businesses along 146, however, it’s a bittersweet end of an era.
Neptune Sub’s
The Highway 146 expansion through Seabrook and Kemah has been talked about for years, but always remained off in the distance. But that "distance" has disappeared and the impacts, especially on the local dining SCENE, are now being felt. Gone are Popeye’s and Taco Bell/KFC, though both are likely to return to 77586, possibly near the Repsdorph traffic circle. Whataburger will be closing and relocating, but no final date or new location has been determined. It appears McDonald's may be the final business to close and relocate (in June 2018). But the story isn't the effect this expansion and the "buy-outs" will have on the fast food segment or other corporate brands like AutoZone, Walgreens, CVS and Wells Fargo. This story is the impact on some of the region’s longest running restaurants, all independent and born locally, by locals for locals.
Original Mario’s Location New Mario’s Location
Mario’s Pizza & Pasta (Established 1976): Mario’s has been serving old fashioned, New York style, hand-tossed pizza from its current location on Highway 146 for over 40 years, and although the exact date has not been determined, they will be closing the doors to this location and moving to their new location in January 2018. Details can be found in the Cover Story of this issue on page 10.
Tookie’s Hamburgers (Established in 1975): Tookie’s Hamburgers came about in the mid-1970s. The founders wanted a restaurant with a nostalgic feel and friendly ambiance of a hometown mid-century Americana drug store (picture: soda jerks, ice cream, fountain drinks and home made pie). - Continued on Page 15

HWY. 146 Expansion: Continued From Page 12 For 33 years it was a favorite for locals and visitors, until 2008 when the restaurant took in 5 feet of storm surge from Hurricane Ike. In 2012, with new ownership, Tookie’s was revived with a few modernizations, and outdoor patio and even a room with an operational model train overhead. Tookie’s is best known for their award winning burgers: The Squealer, The 99 and their can’t-miss appetizer Pelican Eggs. TX-Dot is requiring them to move. The closest restaurant space available within the nearby proximity was just on the other side of the Highway 146 bridge in Kemah. (They’ll be moving to the former Ichibon’s location.) Renovations are already underway. General Manager Lynda Hamilton says they are excited about their larger kitchen, larger bar, more seating (less wait time) and they plan on bringing the same nostalgic feel and tasty food to the other side of the Clear Lake Channel. They expect to be in their new location at the beginning of 2018.
Tookie’s
Habanero’s Taco Co.
Tookie’s Seafood, however, will not be going anywhere. (We also confirmed Habanero’s Taco Co. is also not moving.)
Neptune Subs (Established 1978): This legendary sub shop and their fiercely popular “Bald Monday” banners, featuring a famous or local bald person monthly, have been part of the Seabrook landscape for almost 40 years. Offering discounts to those with “a little shine on top” the first Monday of every month, is just one of the unique attributes locals are sure to miss when Neptune Subs closes its doors for the final time on December 3. Owner, Vinny Schillaci, looking forward to his somewhat-forced retirement, is overwhelmed by the love and support he has been receiving from his loyal customers, some of whom now live out of state and have made a special trip back home to have their very last Neptune Sub before the legendary restaurant is gone.
Neptune Sub’s
Just days after this issue hits the streets, Neptune Subs will bid their friends farewell with a party. The restaurant will shut down, but don't declare the Neptune Subs’ brand dead, as Schillaci has been investigating options for keeping the brand alive with ideas ranging from selling to someone else to reopening in another location to helping the right person start a Neptune Subs food truck. Stop by and wish Vinny and the staff well on or before Sunday, December 3.

Laredo’s Tex-Mex Café
Laredo’s Tex-Mex Café (Established 1969): Seabrook’s oldest Mexican restaurant has been serving old family recipes of authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine to local area residents for almost half a century. They will be relocating in Seabrook, but the details have not been finalized. As of press time, they still do not know the exact date they will be closing the doors of their current location. OTHER NOTABLE MOVES Donald Donuts, long-time supporters of Seabrook area schools (as can be seen by the hand-painted mascots adorning their windows), will be relocating further north along Highway 146 in March; they have not been given an exact date for when they will have to vacate their current location. Fatty’s Bar, known for live music and nightly drink specials, will be relocating next to the Shell station on Highway 146 near Red Bluff.
Outriggers
Outriggers, located directly under the current Kemah Bridge, is still waiting to hear from TxDot for an exact date they will have to vacate their premises. They are looking into building another location within the Seabrook ZIP code.
THE END OF AN ERA Although many of the details are still up in the air, with so many legendary restaurants set to close their doors soon, it’s definitely the end of an era for Seabrook. Locals are encouraged to visit their favorite restaurants before they close their doors and show their support to those establishments who have been around for so many years.

ART AWAKENING By Kelley Dawson Separated from her family at the age of seven and adopted; Dew Harvey shared she experienced confusion and depression. A counselor suggested Harvey find art. She found a cheap water color-type set and started painting. Harvey never lost the motivation to paint. Years later after getting married, Harvey attended night school at Louisiana State University to study art. She sold her first painting in 1972. She told, “I was excited and thought one day I will be an artist.” Harvey often gathers artistic inspiration from her surroundings. She was born in New Orleans and the swamps and marshy landscapes dominate her pieces. She informed, “Louisiana seems to sell anywhere. Mountains not so much. A swamp scene is serene and relaxing, not cold.” Harvey moved to Seabrook more than 20 years ago to live and enjoy the boating life. She returned to painting just three years ago and the bay area now also influences her works. Additionally, Harvey paints from photos. She affirmed, “I love to paint beauty or something of meaning. I fall in love with a photo and I have to paint it. Something hits me and I want to put it on canvas to keep it or it’s something people will like and I must share it.” Harvey has painted with different styles and mediums including water color, acrylics, oils, and flow art. She acknowledged when creating abstracts, “You don’t know what you’re going to get. I like to be in control.”
Harvey’s favorite medium is oils. She said, “It’s my preference. I can do so much more with oils.” Plus, she added, “Oils last forever. It will be around for your children’s children.” Her most prevalent painting style is Realism. “I paint as real as I can without spending another five months on a painting,” she admitted. Her museum-worthy pieces are dramatic and full of life. As is her goal, Harvey’s brush strokes read like a book and tell an audible story. The viewers want to test the waters with their toes and can hear the flapping of a crane’s wings or the splash of a dolphin. The depth and vibrant colors are tangible and enticing. They do not allow a quick glance. Harvey expressed, “I paint to wake someone up to art, not for money. My forte is bringing people to art and bringing art out of people.” Harvey incites talent in others. She especially delights in teaching folks who don’t believe they can paint. “Everybody has art in them whether it’s sculpting or guitar. Most people don’t pull it out. Painting helps them wake up and investigate other art forms,” stated Harvey. She insists with the right techniques and tools everyone can create good art. Harvey believes she is affecting her students’ souls when sharing her tips and tricks with them. She revealed some students cry with joy after completing a painting and signing their name. “It lights your heart and hits your soul when someone likes your work,” Harvey said. Her artistic talents reach far beyond her canvases. Learn more about the artist, classes, or to view additional works visit www.dewspaintdrops.com or call 713-447-3586. LOOSE NOTES: Local Live Music Guide
LOOSE NOTES: From Page 33 Co-headlining the threeshow-card and sharing the stage were guitar virtuosos Andrew James, Angel Vivaldi and Scale the Summit with an evening of “progressive metal” - A form of shred metal blended with jazz. “Stretto Presto” was the cadence for the The Guitar Collective evening while audience fixation and awe were the orders as blistering passages were played running end upon end throughout the entire evening leaving few spaces unfilled. The lineup for Scale the Summit had changed over the past year with Killian Duarte and Charlie Engen joining up with original member Chris Letchford. Technically, the newcomers did a great job - Clever use of video helped listeners like myself negotiate the otherwise perpetual bridges. CHEERS TO A NEW YEAR! I’m not sure how history will rate 2017-- Too many of us lost property and loved ones. At the same time, many got the chance at new starts, and got to welcome new family & friends into our circles. Getting to celebrate winning the final game of the year was simply epic. With the holiday season upon us, do take a moment and give yourself a moment, raise yourself some cheer, sing an auld lang syne to those you’ve lost, and reach out a hand to the “too many” still putting their lives back together. Best yet, get yourself out there and take in some of the great live music we’ve got out there - Your soul will thank you! See you out there!

Chinatown
Sol Flair I’ve got to believe as kids, their relatives replaced their Brahams lullaby machines with jam boxes. All night long, this trio didn’t just make music - They made fun times for all through their use of music which is quite the powerful skill to have and highly enabled at the friendly Zone 504 settings. My favorite numbers of the night? The rap tribute to Bo Diddley followed by their heavy metal reggae interpretation of Fleetwood Mac. The new Sol Flair - I believe I’ve found my new band of the year. THE BRICKHOUSE - If you like variety, Jackie’s Brickhouse is the place. With the Lone Star Rally behind us, we caught within a 48 hour span, two regional acts for the first time - A C&W show with The Philip Griffin Band and pop glam dance band, Chinatown. Musically, the PGB gave the house good reason for waltzing away the entire night while Chinatown, with their
glitzy brightly lit stage, provided just the setting for those needing their grind & boogie. I’m working on getting better line up information - To be continued...

The trademark cover art and Chris concert poster reflect the special Hardy nature of the project as well: a red “L” has been inserted into the word “FOOD” to indicate that this would be a special edition Houston Flood Relief fundraiser. Likewise, it is also very “Houston” down to its core: the musicians featured on the download reflect the diversity for which the city of Houston and its people are now recognized on both a national and also international basis, and include Hardy himself; Equatorial Guinea-born, raised in Spain rapper MBA featuring Metrico; reggae-folk-pop favorites The High Mile; as well as Mandi Powell, Badhouse, David Grace, Heights Funk Collective, Aftervibe, Angel Siren, and many more.
Cover is only $10 to attend, which includes free copy of the Will Play for F(l)ood album – and the first 300 people will receive a free commemorative T-shirt! In all, this year’s Will Play for Food: Flood Edition strives for an even greater cause; so, get in that giving holiday spirit, and lend a helping hand to Harvey survivors in need by attending the live event of the bands featured on it in December 17 beginning at 6 p.m. at Scout Bar – and when you do, tell them THE SCENE sent you!
“It’s really a best-of as far as all of the bands in the area. So, in addition to your digital release of these 19 amazing bands and your attendance at the upcoming show, you have a sense that you are helping those in need as well through our local food bank organization,” Belmarez said. Those same 19 solo acts or bands – including The High Mile, who are featured in this current issue – will also play the benefit at Scout Bar. “This show will be in support of the CD, and further help raise funds for the Galveston County Food Bank, which is just an amazing organization. For people still looking for ways to help, attending the show at Scout will be a great way to show your support not just for

ago, I recall he was crazy LOUD. These days, Peters presented a six-string style more along the lines of Nils Lofgren. I’m really keen on what’s happening with this project and putting them on my watch list. Put them on yours. REINVENTION PART II - It was nearly 10 years ago when I

REINVENTION PART I - Over the years, bands have come and gone. Yet, musicians with an internal need to make music often find a way back onto the stage. Sometimes in an entire presentation which was exactly the case in November when we checked out former frontman of the Misfit Toys, Michael Shanks and his Southern Shanks Band at Easy Street Lounge. These days, this reinvention of musicians opts not to wear-out the local neighborhood, choosing instead to venture all over the greater Houston Metroplex; all the while basing themselves at Easy Street Lounge as their testing grounds. We caught them in November along with several other SCENE music lovers and liked what we heard – A southern country swamp rock seasoned extra heavy with Soul. The sound was refreshing, unique, powerful, and possessed a flow reminding me of the E-Street Band. “Reasonably rehearsed but something different and unknown live” is the mantra of this band. Joining up on this reinvention project is vocalist Rachel Naomi Walker who has ditched the digital vocalizer and blew Rachel away listeners with Naomi her natural soul Walker voice that we never knew she had. Rejoining Shanks from the Misfit Toys is James Shabarekh on drums and Telecaster duties are handled by Matt Peters. The first time I heard him years

first happened upon Jacob Sol Flair Casas and Tres Page at Joel’s Ugly Dawg playing a gig as The Playboys. Somewhere in the archives, I’ve still got photos from that show. We crossed paths again five years later at Sherlock’s on Bay Area, this time with their band, Sol Flair. Back then, they were a straight-up Top 40’s group playing in front of packed audiences. In November, I caught up with them at Zone 504 (Kemah’s Hurricane Harvey distribution center) and practically everything about this band had changed. Page was packing what could’ve been a 5 person percussion section on what I believe was the smallest kit I’ve ever seen. Casas was programming loops on the fly making music live that you would expect from a studio setting. Together, Page & Casas is louder and more complex than Local H, a benchmark duet I like to reference. If this alone was not reinvention enough, the addition of Melissa Sterling from the Good Night Copilot’s was on the level of the Astros bringing in Verlander.

The High Mile: Continued From Page 48 “It’s a distinctly American-inflected millennial pop-reggae that sounds centered on live performance,” notes professor Mike Alleyne, a world-renowned authority on Bob Marley, author of The Encyclopedia of Reggae: The Golden Age of Roots Reggae, and professor of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State University. “It’s like a cross between garage-rock attitude and American-styled pop-reggae,” Alleyne continued, noting that he places The High Mile and their distinct sound on a map with some of the biggest reggae acts of this decade. “Their sound further consolidates an American reggae that emerged in the 2010s with bands like Rebelution, Soja, and The Green,” he asserted. The band’s diverse style Alleyne references indeed draws from a variety of musical styles. “We all came from different musical backgrounds,” said Mendoza. “Ryan and I write all of the lyrics, but it’s really a collective effort,” he said, as Torres also recalled that he wasn’t sure how their styles would fuse when they began creating what became The High Mile. “We had the idea and concept of what we wanted once we starting playing together, and playing off of one another. But with so many different styles coming from each one of us – from metal to industrial, to reggae and grunge, and even punk rock, I said, how are we going to do this?” Torres said. This question was answered almost as soon as it was asked. Soon the band began playing several dates in the Clear Lake area, in Houston, as well as all over Texas. Their EP Red Sun dropped recently (which was notably produced by Anthony Santo from Westfall Recording Studios in Austin, and is available on most all major digital platforms), and includes a fan favorite and the first single from it, titled “Empty Words,” also included on the Will Play for F(l)ood digital release that became available for download in October via CD Baby. “Some of us were also seriously affected by Harvey, so we are honored to be a part of Will Play for F(l)ood,” said Mendoza. Indeed, The High Mile were one of only a handful of bands that made it to the final cut of the digital release, and who will also perform at the benefit concert in December at Scout Bar in conjunction with the benefit. So, what else is in the future for The High Mile, and what can you expect at a show? “We’re working on a new EP due for release in Spring 2018, which is being produced by Stephen Bogle of The Hunger, and a music video for our song ‘Exploration,’” said Mendoza. “As far as our shows, expect a lot of humor, and a lot of fun energy!” Come travel The High Mile next at Scout Bar on December 7 when they perform with Th3rd Coast Roots, a Houston-based, selfdescribed “beach/campfire vibe reggae band,” and then again at the Will Play for F(l)ood Benefit, December 16 at 6 p.m. (also at Scout Bar; more details in the Will Play for Flood concert feature!) – and when you do, make sure to tell them THE SCENE sent you!

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 39 Down at T-Bone Tom’s, we enjoyed a Sunday afternoon of baseball cap country with the Shane Barnhill band. Shane, a family man firefighter from Baytown, was unable to appear at the recent Pirates and Poets Songwriters Festival. For those who missed him, Barnhill is a by the book C&W artist with a healthy YouTube presence and draws a respectable following at T-Bone’s. I’d like to learn who is Barnhill’s lead guitarist, whose pedal board is more than half-filled

James Gang, all the good pre ’80s stuff. Donnie’s style is full spectrum and powerfully penetrating as is his Gibson Les Paul and vintage Windsong amp - He handles Joe Walsh with ease. In the words of Chet Atkins, “no guitar player is that much better than the other. The difference is those who take time to play with those who are better”, which is what open mics provides at Katie’s. Holding down the fort and in the box was Joe Campise on the kit along with Bob Emmons having a good time on bass. Ted Jones and Fred Linton stopped in for a few songs and in short order, the open mic jam had the people dancing – needing only a name, I declare this throwdown band to be party ready.
with custom stompboxes and plays studio perfect riffs and licks. My favorite number Barnhill and his boys played was a creative C&W interpretation of Springsteen. DONNIE SIMMONS - The World Series was still playing, the hometown pro football team was retooling, and a quick Sunday afternoon ride to Katie’s Open Mic was in order. I’ve been covering lots of blues here. Today was a day for rock…. Classic ’60s & ’70s rock, Southern Rock, Texas Rock, AC/DC (RIP Malcom Young) Rock, Skynyrd,

When I asked Donnie about his compelling rock solos, he explained, “they’re simply blues licks as it all come from blues anyway…. the trick is accenting it just right to make it sound like the original lick.” An interesting note that evening came from Jones, whose daytime job is at the Baytown Motor Sports Park drag strip. He reports over 36,000 cars are there waiting to be auctioned – shop for used cars wisely, people. The acid test for the evening was if they could handle the Blue Brothers with Linton in the house, the song was Soul Man… Nailed it! Book them! - Continued on Page 35

Loose Notes by Andy Eng
Happy holidays to you and yours! I’m not sure about you, but I’m still savoring my walk on Cloud Nine with our hometown baseball team winning the last game of the season! Like too many of you, we’re still dealing with post hurricane repairs and likely still to be setting things right well into the New Year. Nonetheless, like many of you, we were able to enjoy ourselves with some really great live music out and about. Let’s run down some of what all that went down. PATIO SEASON - Is here and a swing through the Lighthouse District was in order. Pre-Holiday weekends in Kemah are my favorite time to hit the lighthouse district. Schools out, old acquaintances gather. Lovers are out playing. Intelligent conversations are held.
Above: The Guitar Collective @ Scout Left: Josh Wagner @ Crazy Alans Below: Susan Hickman @ Monkey Bar
We started off checking out Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack where they had been hosting some very good live music in recent months. On the stage was Josh Wagner whom we had not seen since the days of the Open Mic at the Cockeyed Seagull. A true to the bone Texas Aggie, I’m not sure Josh knows a soft gentle song. Even his slowest song of the set, Black Crows, “She Talks With Angels” possessed a hard-hitting gusto to go along with his articulate picking. These days, Wagner pretty much plays at the Swamp Shack and the Monkey Bar. Speaking of where… We enjoyed music sets from CMA Texas Female Vocalist of the year, Susan Hickman, on the Monkey Bar patio. Susan is an incredible talent handling requests with ease, without need of a tablet. Her commanding voice makes the audience stop yapping and pay attention during the quiet passages. My favorite from Susan was her convincing C&W interpretations of Fleetwood Mac. - Continued on Page 37

CAPS & CORKS Serves up a little “Retail Therapy” at Baybrook Mall this Holiday Shopping Season By Shawn Domingues Caps & Corks, a cocktail bar located in the food court area of Baybrook Mall, offers shoppers the opportunity to “Sip and Shop” every day of the week. Yes, really! Customers can take their drinks with them as they stroll from store to store inside the mall; or sit down at the bar, take a break from shopping and relax with a glass of wine, a cold beer or a frozen margarita. With three large HDTVs, Caps & Corks is like a sports bar oasis for those who reluctantly came to the mall because they didn't want to miss the game. The bartenders joke that it's a “husband daycare” for wives who would like to keep their significant other content while they shop. “Our customers have been predominately male in the past, but lately we’ve been getting a lot of groups of ladies who prefer to have ‘sip and shop’ days over ‘girls night out’ with their group of friends,” said owner Stephanie Warren. Caps & Corks offers a variety of wines, 12 different flavors of frozen margaritas and a large selection of craft beers including 8th Wonder’s Dome Fauxm, Rocket Fuel, Love Street, and a selection of IPAs, hard ciders and seasonals. The large menu board lists the current specialty drinks and shots (made from premium wine-based liquors) with clever names like, Buyer’s Remorse, Retail Therapy, Cha Ching and Smokin’ Credit Card. “We definitely sell a lot of craft beers, but customers really love the “Shopaholic,” our fancy version of a Long Island Tea, and many have told us our Long Island is the best they’ve ever had,” said Warren. Happy Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11a.m. to 4p.m. and include $2.50 Mimosas, $3.50 House Wine, $4.50 Frozen Ritas and $6 Long Island Teas/Shopaholics. Although they have been around since 2013, they still have shoppers walking up in disbelief, on a daily basis, asking employees if they can really order an alcoholic beverage, walk away with it and then actually stroll around the mall with it. The employees laugh and take it all in stride as they point to their sign adorning the wall that says, “Drink while you shop! Yes, really!” Open year-round, Caps & Corks has been easing buyer’s remorse and lifting shopper's spirits for more than four years now, and they are looking forward to another bustling holiday shopping season. So if holiday shopping isn’t typically your “cup of tea,” stop by Caps & Corks this year, and order your favorite drink to help make your season a little merrier. Be sure to tell them the SCENE sent you.

The “Red Sun” On the Rise in Texas Reggae:
THE HIGH MILE By Sarah Piña The Texas Reggae scene is a phenomenon unto itself; faithful readers of the live music columns of The SCENE magazine, as well as those involved in the local music circuit, are no stranger to the plethora of reggae fusions that regularly perform in Houston and especially in the Bay Area, fitting for the backdrop and inspiration served by calm waters, swaying palm trees, and warm cool breezes.

This emergent SCENE is further illuminated by new local favorites The High Mile, a band which has since its inception in 2016 has already garnered respect from not only their growing fan base, but fellow musicians and authorities in music as well. “Texas Reggae is growing and changing. It’s just different here. Between me and some of the local artists like Soulfiya, Louis Morales from DEM, Jon Clark from Sullivan’s Vessel, and Randy Mendoza from High Mile, we’re all trying to bring a coalition to Texas and to help bring each other up,” Joe Serrato of InDaSkies said as his band dropped their first EP Essential Vibrations back in April. Since then, The High Mile—a group which humbly started between a couple of college buddies, and sprouted from there – has also dropped their first EP Red Sun, further validating Serrato’s assertion. The current lineup of The High Mile includes Randy “Rasta” Mendoza (bass/vocals); Athie Torres (guitar); Ryan Damian (drums); and Ryan Heffernan (keys, guitar, and vocals). Though the current group has only performed together less than a year, they have already shared a stage with the likes of The Wailers, Katchafire, Through the Roots, Inna Vision, 40 Oz to Freedom, Peni Dean, and the Bumpin Uglies, to name a few, and their exciting sound has even caught the attention of internationally-recognized reggae authorities in the music industry. - Continued on Page 36

Ace Frehley Sun., Dec. 17 SCOUT BAR
Scout Bar Saturday,December 16 In October, a new spin on an already great cause took flight: the digital download for Will Play for Food – an annual non-profit venture which showcases the vibrant music and art scene each year at Scout Bar since 2012 – was released. However, this year’s “Flood Edition” (also known as Will Play for F(L)ood) – was released through CD Baby in anticipation of the colossal benefit concert taking place at Scout Bar on December 16. “For the digital release, we sent out a call for submissions, and were overwhelmed to have received over five hours of music. That was narrowed down to 19 local artists and 75 minutes,” said Roland Belmarez of Scout Bar, who along with founder, director, and well-known local musician Chris Hardy helped produce the digital release as well as the benefit concert. - Continued on Page 34
