Historic Tookie’s Relocating to Kemah this month Since 1975, Tookie’s Hamburgers has been serving legendary burgers, onion rings, milkshakes and more from the same location, time and again earning its reputation as one of the top burger spots in the nation — so much so, that it was even featured in the special “Burger Land” TV show on the Travel Channel in recent years.
Expansions and updates have been inevitable, however. In 2008, Hurricane Ike poured 5 feet of Galveston Bay water into the restaurant, and the original owners decided not to reopen. It was then that local restaurateur Barry Terrell breathed new life into the iconic Seabrook eatery, vowing to keep as much of the original recipes, charm and nostalgia that locals and visitors have come to love.
Owner Barry Terrell prior to Tookie’s reopening following Hurricane Ike.
Though Hurricane Harvey couldn’t even keep the iconic spot down, expansions along Highway 146 (along with Seabrook ordinances which state that businesses must be 30 feet from the road) will see Tookie’s Hamburgers in Seabrook closing the doors to their one and only historic location for the last time in January.

Where is the Galactic Coast? It is a question I have gotten consistently ever since coming up with it as a name for the brewery Mike Taylor and I launched back in 2010.
And while few can likely locate the “Galactic Coast” on a map, it is the only region in America with a more diverse and valuable set of assets to the nation than New York City or Washington D.C. — a fact brought up after the 9/11 attacks, then again during the United States Department of Defense’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commission in 2005 and again after Hurricanes Ike and Harvey.
If you are reading this in print form, there is a very high likelihood you live, work and/or play along the Galactic Coast.
The Galactic Coast expands from Galveston north to Houston and east to Baytown with a lot of coastline, industry, technology, retail and tourism in between with the home of U.S. Manned Spaceflight, the Johnson Space Center (JSC), smack dab in the center. As the list on the opposite page suggests, the Galactic Coast is a special, dynamic and unique region that deserves a name to match and one identifiable to all the world over. Sure, everyone knows Houston thanks to Neil Armstrong (“Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”) And Houston’s status on the world stage has only increased since — especially in recent years. But as a Forbes magazine column titled “One Lesson From Harvey: Houston Matters In A Way Other Cities Don’t” displays, Houston is often credited with assets (ports, petrochemical plants, refineries, etc.) found outside the city, but within the Silicone Valley Galactic Coast. Because the Galactic Coast is a region and bigger than any single city, even one as massive and impressive as Houston.
With just two words, Galactic Coast touches on the most unique characteristics of the region, the strong connection to — if not domination of — both sea and space. The ports of the Galactic Coast are the busiest in the nation based on tonnage. And the Johnson Space Center in the heart of the Galactic Coast is the home for all Manned Space Flight — both impressive titles that will only become even more impressive and important moving forward.
If everyone knows where less impressive regional clusters like Silicone Valley on the West Coast and the Research Triangle on the East Coast are, isn’t it time people knew where the Galactic Coast is? — John Ennis
Research Triangle
In addiiton to being a cheerleader for this region, John Ennis is a magazine publisher, father, brewery president, husband, designer, author, internet start-up survivor and former sports writer who played himself in a Discovery Channel made-for-TV movie, has been self-employeed since 1998 and is about to launch a podcast titled “The Galactic Coast Power Hour.” This is a very abbreviated introduction to and argument for the Galactic Coast.
ESTABLISHED “COAST” REGIONS
While GALACTIC COAST is new, there are many well established “Coast” regions around the world. With First Coast, Surf Coast, Treasure Coast, Forgotten Coast, Nature Coast, Emerald Coast and — my favorite — Space Coast (Cape Canaveral, Titusville, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Palm Bay, Merritt Island, etc.) almost every part of Florida’s shoreline has been given a “Coast” name, many by marketers for tourism purSPACE COAST GOLD COAST poses. Florida also has a Gold Coast FLORIDA, US QUEENSLAND, AU that includes Miami and Fort Lauderdale, but I’ve got the Gold Coast region in the Australian state of Queensland and home of the famous Surfers Paradise Beach and a very impressive skyline, on my “bucket list” of places to visit one day.
The GALACTIC COAST is the most economically potent, technologically dynamic and desirable relocation destination in the United States* *Multiple sources including Business Insider, New York Times, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Commerce,Forbes, U-Haul International's Migration Trend Report among others.
The GALACTIC COAST is home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC), Mission Control, the Astronaut Corps and the base for the development, testing, training, and operation of all U.S. human spacecraft missions.
The GALACTIC COAST is home to more Fortune 500 companies than any region outside of New York City. It has the highest pay in the country when adjusted for the cost of living and has been described nationally as an “economic juggernaut,” as the country’s “top job creator” and the “last area into the recession and first out of it.”
The GALACTIC COAST is home to three thriving ports: the Port of Houston, the Port of Texas City and the Port of Galveston which have resulted in Texas being the nation’s top exporting state for 11 consecutive years. Individually, the Port of Houston ranks first in the United States in foreign waterborne tonnage (14 straight years); first in U.S. imports (20 straight years); second in U.S. export tonnage and second in the U.S. in total tonnage (20 straight years). The GALACTIC COAST has been at the forefront of the oil and gas industry from the early 20th century and has since developed into the Energy Capital of the World. This area hosts many of the largest petrochemical complexes in the world and supports the highest concentration of energy and chemicalrelated companies in the nation. No other metropolitan area maintains the nexus of chemical manufacturing resources, technology, and expertise to stimulate economic development opportunities for stable growth.
The GALACTIC COAST is a dynamic tourist and entertainment destination with most of the State’s top tourist attractions including the beaches of Galveston Island, Space Center Houston, Kemah Boardwalk, Moody Gardens, Battleship Texas, San Jacinto Monument, Armand Bayou Nature Center, the Clear Lake Recreation Area, superb shopping, year round sports (golf, tennis, sailing), more than 30 waterfront restaurants, an impressive line-up of live music venues and the nation’s greatest concentration of sailboats, yachts and pleasure craft.
The GALACTIC COAST includes many of the nation’s top healthcare institutions, including the world-famous Houston Medical Center. It has become an international medical treatment destination and is considered the most active life science research and entrepreneurial medical communities in the nation.
Crazy Alan Expands the Swamp Further Out of the Bayou alan Franks – a.k.a. Crazy alan – has been bringing fresh, live crawfish from Louisiana to the Houston By shawn domingues area since 1995. Visiting up to five different farms to ensure he gets the most of the freshest and biggest crawfish available, this 12-hour trip is made at least four times a week during crawfish season, which is just a little bit longer at Crazy alan’s Swamp Shack as they strive to be the first and last to offer fresh crawfish in the area. With crawfish season now in full swing, the pots are boiling overtime as Crazy alan expands his Swamp Shack. Crawfish cravings can be quickly quelled with customers able to order pounds of boiled as well as live crawfish to-go at the drive-thru location next door to the original Swamp Shack (310 Texas ave., Kemah). Food trucks have also been added to further expand the Swamp’s reach. Located in Webster (at the intersection of Bay area Blvd. and Hwy. 3) and alvin (in front of the meadow Park Shopping Center at the corner of Hwy. 35 and mustang rd.), these food trucks are open seven days a week from noon to 9 p.m. with two other trucks also open in various places throughout the year.
Crazy alan will continue expanding the swamp with his hunt focusing in on the Baybrook mall area in the near future. They will be running two food trucks out of each restaurant location as well.
In 2013, Crazy alan’s opened their second location on I-10 in East Houston, but when Hurricane Harvey hit town, the restaurant took on water and was forced to close. not willing to let a little hurricane bring him down, Crazy alan decided to rebuild the restaurant with a new concept in mind. This new venture, called the Blue Bayou Café, will offer similar food as the Swamp Shack in a more upscale atmosphere. Crawfish Myths Busted by Crazy Alan! MYTH: Don’t Eat the Straight Ones” (We’ve heard the expression, and been told the straight ones were dead before they were boiled and aren’t any good to eat.) BUSTED: According to Crazy Alan (and a study from LSU) not all of the straight ones are bad. Sometimes, the crawfish are very crowded in the boil and in the bag and their tails straighten while they are being cooked. If you get a straight one, peel it and check if the meat is firm, it’s good. MYTH: “If the shell is soft, the crawfish is overcooked.” (People typically toss out any crawfish that have a soft shell because they think the crawfish is overcooked. If only one or two crawfish are soft, this is simply not the case. BUSTED: Crawfish are crustaceans and as they grow, they shed their shells and grow new ones. This molting occurs even more during what Crazy Alan calls the “growing season,” so he says the crawfish they get early in the season and late in the season may have more of these softer shells. Again, peel the crawfish and if the meat is firm and easily removed from the head, the crawfish is good and was just going through a growth stage.

From humble beginnings, Crazy alan is a firm believer in the american Dream and said, “Hard work is the key to success.” He said he believes anyone can become successful in this great country as long as they are willing to put in the work. He said he was given an amazing opportunity because of his own hard work and dedication, and that he will be paying it forward, offering a long-time dedicated employee the opportunity to become a managing partner in another location.
While hard work is definitely behind the success of Crazy alan’s Swamp Shack, loyal customers and fans of the restaurant from all over the globe will likely say it is the awardwinning crawfish, and Cajun-inspired menu that has them coming back for more.
With four different spice levels to choose from (mild, Hot and Spicy, Extra Spicy and ultimate Heat), crawfish are the biggest sellers this time of year and are often ordered with the new G-Sauce. Created by Guillermo miranda, the managing partner at the East Houston location, this spicy garlic sauce is becoming famous in Houston as well as the Kemah location. Crazy alan says, “It’s so good you can probably put it on a napkin, and it will taste good. ask for it – you won’t regret it.” although the Swamp Shack is best known for their crawfish and their Seafood Pots big enough to feed the whole family (the Boiled Seafood Feast includes two pounds of crawfish, a half pound of boiled shrimp, two blue crabs, one cluster of snow crab, one cluster of Dungeness, one leg of king crab and a 10-ounce lobster tail); they also serve a variety of other Cajun-inspired dishes, such as alligator Eggs (scallops wrapped in bacon and deep fried), Coon Balls (Boudain balls), Bullfrog Legs, Gator Bites (actual alligator fried or barbecued), Bayou Po-boys (fried alligator, shrimp, catfish or crawfish with cocktail and tartar sauce spread on French bread, served with shrimp slaw, lettuce and tomato) and Cajun classics like red Beans and rice, Jambalaya, Etouffee and Gumbo.

Crazy alan’s Swamp Shack offers several specials and promotions throughout the week, such as all-you-Can-Eat Catfish or Shrimp ($14.99 for lunch, $16.99 for dinner and $19.99 Friday through Sunday) and $4.99 Crawfish Happy Hour Specials (all day on monday and Wednesday and monday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m.) Tuesdays they offer $2 tacos all day, plus $7.99 Snow Crab Clusters from 6 to 10 p.m.; Wednesday is "Buy one, Get one Half off." (ask for details.); Thursday they offer half off appetizers and $7.99 Snow Crab Clusters from 6 to 10 p.m. They have lunch specials monday through Friday with Happy Hour until 6 p.m. with 50¢ off drinks. Kids eat free three days a week. (ask for details.) Visit www.crazyalanswampshack.com to receive a free entrée on your birthday (and other special discounts) when you sign up for Crazy alan’s Birthday club.
For more than eight years, Crazy alan has been serving Cajun food and bringing a little bit of the bayou to the Bay area. With new locations on the horizon and the additions of the drive-thru and food trucks throughout the area, it will be even easier to get what the crazy crawfish customers crave, and Crazy alan will continue to expand the swamp as he lives out the american Dream.

Bakkhus Taverna Greek Restaurant and Bar 605 6th street - Kemah • 281-538-1800
Hours of Operation: monday - Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
restaurant Concept: In roman mythology, Bacchus (or Bakkhus) is the god of wine and agriculture. Bakkhus Taverna touts that this is “not your ordinary Greek restaurant.” This family restaurant offers a fusion of Greek and american fare with a bit of southern twist. owner Demetrios Kouloumoundras said, “We pride ourselves in our home style cooking, but we’re not afraid of trying new things. nothing is set in stone when it comes to Greek cooking, and we’re all about putting new twists on items that we have on our menu. our goal is to offer a menu diverse in traditional and modern Greek cuisine using nothing but the best spices and freshest local produce.”
specialties: Classic Greek cuisine such as Gyro, Hummus, Babaghanouj, Falafel, Tzatziki, a variety of pita selections and more, are served with just a hint of southern american flare. Bakkhus is also well known for offering Greek versions of american classics like the Bakkhus Philly Sandwich (Choice of chicken or beef with red onion, bell pepper, mushroom and fire feta on French bread), the Prime rib Sandwich (thinly sliced, au jus-infused onion and mushroom, grueyere and provolone cheese with a dollop of tzatziki horseradish) and the Fajita Pita (chicken or beef, sautéed pico de gallo and tzatziki in a warm pita.) The burger section of the menu includes Greek versions of classic hamburgers, such as the Spartan (lean american Kobe beef, sautéed spinach, red onion, cilantro, bacon, garlic aioli, Kefalograviera, cheese and spices) or the Bakkhus Burger (red wine-marinated ground beef burger topped with sautéed onions and mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and red onion with feta and Greek spices). using Greek spices in their boiling pots, they serve snow crab legs, boiled shrimp and crawfish (when crawfish season is in full swing) on Wednesdays adding a Greek twist to the Cajun-inspired peel and eat cuisine. menu standouts: Grilled Chicken avocado (marinated grilled chicken breast topped with tomato, basil, garlic, avocado and Swiss cheese, served with sautéed spinach), Duck Breast (sautéed duck breast served with grilled vegetables, lemon roasted potatoes and fig jam), rack of Lamb (full rack marinated with garlic, rosemary and seasoned olive oil, grilled and topped with a garlic feta butter drizzle, served with grilled zucchini and squash), Greek Festival Platter (pastitsio, Greek meatballs, moussaka, tiropita, spanakopita, rice, grape leaves and baked pita) and brunch menu items such as Shrimp & Sausage Grits, Bakkhus Eggs Benedict (with choice of Ham or Smoked Salmon) and the Pita Scrambler (scrambled eggs, bacon, sautéed onion, melted feta cheese wrapped in a warm pita.)

FANTASY ISLA featured artist: ISLA JIANG
By Kelley dawson
Local artist Isla Jiang spent three years as a young child living on moonsong, a 32-foot sailboat. She and her parents sailed around the Caribbean Islands and Guatemala. They once went 11 days without seeing land. Jiang believes that time shaped how she views the world, encouraged her love for travel, and gave her an understanding “that all people are connected in more ways than divided.” The unforgettable tropical travels continue to inspire Jiang as she paints her way back to her childhood. “I paint a little bit of everything, but mostly colorful and bright. a friend refers to my art as whimsical,” said Jiang.
Her vibrant pieces echo the intensely hued scenery and cultures she experienced during her island journeys.
She declared, “I paint stuff I would want in my house; something that makes me happy.” Jiang also paints animals. “They are purer than humans and have nothing to hide. animal forms are just like they are made. They’re not trying to be something else,” she expressed. Jiang started drawing with pen and ink. Even after a turtle she drew was purchased, she was still convinced she couldn’t paint.
on a whim, she bought a large canvas and finger painted a giant world map which recently sold. Her current works include acrylics, some watercolor and bit of digital. many of Jiang’s paintings incorporate a mandala or geometric pattern typically serving as a symbol of the universe. She informed, “I use them in my art, because I think I subconsciously create art to make sense of the world. Even when terrible things are happening, I can create art with balance and proportion that, in a way, represents perfection, represents peace that we don’t get on this earth very often.”

She disclosed, “Taking art from my wall is a good example of the creator’s curse. The point of creating is to spread your art and your love, not to keep it all to yourself at home.”
Jiang stated, “He knows that’s what it’s for; artwork is made to be shared.” She added, “also, if he doesn’t, our house will continue looking like an art gallery.” Jiang revealed taking the paintings off of her wall is bittersweet.
She explained, “It feels a little bit, I imagine, like being a foster mother and giving my children over to new homes, and I’m always ecstatic when I know those new homes will love and cherish the art as much as I did while I had it. I get a certain amount of time with each piece before it goes off to make someone else happy, to make someone else’s house a little brighter, and I try to appreciate every moment I have before that time comes.” Jiang grew up in the Bay area and currently resides in El Lago. She does acquisitions for the library at College of the mainland. View more of her colorful creations at etsy.com/shop/islasgrotto. Contact her by email artbyisla@gmail.com or phone 281-433-5210. ART WALK in Kemah Starts the New Year JANUARY 19
TOOKIES BURGERS: Continued from Page 9
Terrell said the move out of their original location and into Kemah is not something they wanted, but will still have to move just like many other businesses along this strip due to the Hwy. 146 Expansion Project slated to start construction in august 2018.
“We don’t know what day we’ll open in Kemah, but we have to be out by the end of January,” he commented at press time. Terrell also explained that they will be closed for about a week, and then reopen the doors to the new location (a spot formerly home to Ichibon’s).
By domino Taylor
art Walk in Kemah will be January 19, hosted by art of Coffee. The evening of visual arts will be from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at The art of Coffee at 609 Bradford in Kemah. The art Walk will not only have art work from many prominent Texas artists, but wine and live entertainment to add to the festivities. Some of the artists that will be featured in the art Walk are Tassie Polk, Diane Duggon, mary ann Silva, Kelly Halbach, miss Isla, Pam Hatch, Jesse nieto and many more. Take the opportunity to browse the walls of colorful art and also outside in the breezeway and courtyard. additional free parking will be available on the corner of 7th and Harris Street.
“We wanted to find a restaurant spot as close to our current location as possible,” said General manager Lynda Hamilton. and rest assured those familiar with Tookie’s, the restaurant will retain that familiarity of their trademark style and décor — the outside of the building has been repainted green and yellow to match the original Tookie’s location, and the owners are in the process of duplicating as much of the charm they are known for as they can. “We’ll be bringing over all the memorabilia; we’re even installing cedar plank ceilings here, like we have in Seabrook,” Terrell said. “We’re excited about the larger footprint and a more spacious bar, and we’ll be building an even bigger patio with a marina view.”
So if you love the original location – or you’ve never been – now’s your chance to visit and wish Tookie’s Hamburgers well on their move before they close the doors to the original Seabrook location for good. Stay tuned to the SCEnE for updates!
“Come out to our first art Walk of the year and see the beautiful art from prize winning artists and have a glass of wine on us and listen to live music. It will be a lot of fun,” said Jimmy Sims Jr., The art of Coffee manager. For more information on the art Walk, call 281-532-6371.

Harvest Moon Regatta Donates to Port Aransas Hurricane Harvey Recovery
members of Lakewood yacht Club and the Bay access Foundation recently presented a check for $22,638 to the Port aransas Education Fund, and the Seabrook rotary Club presented its own check for $2,000.
Port aransas sustained considerable damage during Hurricane Harvey including the destruction of the new basketball court in the high school gymnasium. The Port aransas High basketball teams were on hand to accept the check as the funds will be used to pay for a portable gym in the Port aransas Civic Center until their school's gym can be repaired.
"Port a has been a gracious host to the finish and post-race festivities of our annual Harvest moon regatta for many years," said LyC Commodore Jim Winton. "as soon as we heard of the devastation in Port aransas, we gathered our resources and started thinking of ways to help. The Lakewood community is very pleased to have worked with Hmr race organizers and volunteers to raise this contribution through various raffles and our Hurricane Harvey/Port a recovery Fund."

King’s X: Continued From Page 48
Pinnick is no stranger to the spotlight on his own, however. Though King’s X have continued success for more than 30 years now, his own solo career has been carved throughout the decades as well. Since the early 2000s, he has released four solo albums and been invited to play on several tribute albums including those dedicated to the music of metallica, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, KISS, aerosmith, aC/DC, Steve Stevens (of Billy Idol and Top Gun theme fame), and Jimi Hendrix, to name a very few. and as one of few african-american lead vocalists and bassists in rock, the latter is a significant one and an influence that is practically inescapable.
“The thing about Jimi Hendrix is, there were very few black rock musicians to look up to when I was growing up. I didn’t like his music at first, actually, and didn’t understand his guitar playing. It wasn’t until Band of Gypsies that I really ‘got it,’ and gravitated toward him. The thing about Jimi and other iconic musicians like The Beatles is that they have been in our lives so long, they influence us indirectly because it’s just universal music everyone knows. I can’t say that Jimi influenced me or I took him as an influence on purpose, but indirectly, 100%. and I could imitate him pretty well,” he said, adding that he also has a Hendrix tribute record to be released. “my Hendrix tribute record is with rat Pack records, and one where I played guitar, bass, and sang on it, too. I’ve called it The dug Pinnick Tribute to Jimi Hendrix: often Imitated, never Duplicated. I called it that because you can’t — you just can’t duplicate such genius,” he said. Pinnick has also been collaborating and performing with side bands that would be the envy of many musicians.
“my favorite so far has been with KXm,” he said, a “super group” comprised of himself, drummer ray Luzier from Korn, and guitarist George Lynch of the Lynch mob, whose self-titled debut release landed at #31 in 2014 on the Billboard Top 200. “The chemistry we have between us, it’s just a whole different ballgame and so much fun. We are a grounded blues band, with one big thing in mind: the blues. We make sure we are solely blues-based. We write everything together, throw it up, twist it together, and drop the beat, a lot like zz Top used to do back in the day, but about three steps lower. We’re getting ready to do a third album. It’s just a whole other challenge for me, and a lot of fun,” he said. So what’s next for Pinnick, and for King’s X?
“a book has just been written about King’s X by Greg Prado,” he said. as of press time, Pinnick himself was proofing the final version of the book. “It’s been really gratifying to see our history chronicled, and have people like Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Sheehan (best known for his work with Steve Vai, David Lee roth, mr. Big, Talas, niacin, and The Winery Dogs), robert DeLeo from the Stone Temple Pilots, and andy Summers from The Police talk about how we influenced them or what meaning our band has had for them. It’s just mind-blowing to think about it, actually,” he recounted.
as for Pinnick, the famed bassist also has a huge release on the horizon — his own signature pedal, which will be released this month as well to certain markets by electronics company Tech21.
“It’s a bass tone that is me, that when I play, everyone knows it’s me. It’s a tone I’ve forged as a bass player. But it’s more than just me having my own pedal. It’s really exciting to get to my age and look back and say: Hey, you never got rich or super famous, but damn, you got everything they got. I’ve been given instruments

What do you do when not at work? When school lightens its load, I usually enjoy playing guitar and performing at a few open mics around Houston.
The most rewarding part of your job? Providing a service the helps people unwind after a stressful week, or helping them celebrate some good news, or just helping them tip a few. What's your number 1 new Year's resolution you are most determined to accomplish? I never really make a resolution for the new near. usually if I want to or need to do something, I just do it. 5 words that describe you: outgoing, easygoing, strange, goofy, driven.
favorite thing about the Bay area? I'd have to say the pace that it is growing. The Bay area is starting to live up to all of its potential.
Best tip you ever got: a regular had a long and great night with a bunch of other bar regulars. The last three at the end of the night had just met that night and were in good spirits and left me around $170. What do you love about bartending? meeting new people and learning new drinks. Who inspires you? / What motivates you? all of the artists that have made it doing what they love.
and amps and pedals the day we got a record deal; we have people who love us and have followed the band for years; we even have a tribute band in countries like India, and just fans in general who continue to want to further the cause. as a musician, what else can you ask for?” Pinnick said.
and those followers in Houston will soon have the chance to see this hugely successful band this month at Scout Bar. as the band called Houston home for some time, it is always a particularly meaningful show for the trio.
“It seems like every time we play in Houston, it’s a good memory. our tours would always end in Houston. We would go on the road — and a lot of bands can probably relate to this — but it was by the end of the tour we really ‘found our jams,’ really found our groove, so by the time you got to the end of the tour, it was always an incredible show. The music we make is a lot of work, so it always feels like a joyous homecoming when we play Houston,” he said, adding that for those who may experience King’s X for the first time (or even seasoned fans can second Pinnick’s words), “There’s never one show that’s alike. I think that’s the strong gamut of emotions that come from the stage when we play – it grabs people from every walk of life and polar opposites. There’s just a wall of things going on, coming at you all at once, and you find your peace of heart in it.” Catch King’s X next reign over Scout Bar on Saturday, January 20, with openers Kings of Spade, Peace & the Chaos, and The Steve Satchel Band. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are limited, so head to www.scoutbar.com to secure your seats for an unforgettable night with one of the greatest rock bands of this century — and when you go, make sure to tell them The SCEnE sent you!

you the best in 2018 with the challenges ahead and the opportunities you seek. remember to lend a hand if you can to those still digging their way out. Looking ahead, our hometown pro football team seems to be underwater like many homes were last year, but we do have hope with our pro basketball team. remember, too, live music is best enjoyed in person. See you out there, and cheers to the new year!
I got to chat with Jonathan Jourdan of this year’s headline act, To Whom It may, and winner of the Best Live Performance. The band finished touring with Candlebox, has a huge backlog of songs to record in the studio, are cruising along great with their management, and next year planning to tour with 10 years. Pretty cool, eh? I recall how strong this band was last year and super impressed with how much stronger they played that night. amazing what seeing the world can do. Back to SLm… The competition this year was thick, the winner list long (and includes several that you probably know), and the voting three times over last year’s participation. Keep an eye out for SLm, the nominees and winners – they’ve got something good happening. IT’s a neW Year - 2017 was epic along many slants. I appreciate hearing your stories and wish

garage bandy sound to them...” me? I like to think of these bands as those capable of taking any cover, and representing the song as if it was their own, like The Bodacious Tatas or Cisco. For this issue, we stopped into perhaps the ultimate garage at ol’ mothers and caught some tasty action from Dance Floor Cartel, an ultimate garage band experience. This nifty band centers around drummer Brian Broussard and guitarist mike Lee, two long time area musicians. one thing that these two do to further foster their unique sound is to record and listen to each and every rehearsal and show – something musicians may wish to consider. over the years, Broussard and Lee kept busy averaging 30-50 gigs a year and include the legendary Balinese Ballroom and Turtle Club on their resumes. recently, they picked up dynamite vocalist Hillary ross from the neon moon open mic action and added Joe Tips on bass. If “Garage Band” is a phrase you prefer not to use, feel free to consider “Party ready” – Dance Floor Cartel.

2017 resOluTIOn - Check… a year ago, I wanted to try something different and throughout the year, cover a different artist at Katie’s each and every month throughout the year. not only different artist, but also to hear performers I had yet seen before. The theory along the way, was that each visit would be one of exceptional talent. I’m pleased to say we went 12-0 and closing 2017 catching Freddie Pate for the first time. you don’t see Freddie’s shows posted often around the area. This master class musician keeps a busy nationwide schedule, making his visit into Bacliff even more special. In Freddie’s early years, he shared the stage with “Buck, merle, Paycheck, Lefty…” which he credits his Granny, “Colonel Parker.” Pate’s resume of acts he’s opened for is impressive and includes ronnie milsap, Willie nelson, Eddie rabbit, Haggard, alabama, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, David alan Coe, Conway Twitty, many many others, and if his name still doesn’t ring a bell, Freddie was Wayne Toups’ guitarist for 30 years.

Galactic Coast Brewing Co. sells original brewery to startup Cranky Britches Brewing Co.
Galactic Coast Brewing (GCB) recently entered a new phase of development by triggering a deal with startup brewery Cranky Britches Brewing Co. (CBBC). As a result, CBBC has acquired the facility, equipment and best selling recipe, the Sneaky Blonde, from Galveston County’s oldest brewery.

The deal sounds like one completed last summer between the established Texian Brewing Co. and startup Fulbrook Ale Works. Similar to how that deal did not signal the end for Texian Bill Arning Brewing, GCB president and co-founder John Ennis explained “This is far from the end of Galactic Coast Brewing as we have ambitious plans for the future and are currently busy having expanded our mission statement in the micro while positioning ourselves for exciting opportunities in the macro.”
The GCB mission statement now includes entering the brewery consulting and equipment manufacturing business and GCB is already working with new clients in those areas, starting with CBBC. According to Ennis, the CBBC team has been training on the GCB-engineered brewery equipment, learning all the protocols developed by GCB and has been working closely with GCB on the federal and state licensing process. “They already have their federal approval and are close with the State,” Ennis explained. “They are hungry, excited and ready to bring some outstanding beers to market.” The driving force behind the Cranky Britches’ lineup of beers is award-winning brewer Bill Arning. Arning is not only one of the most decorated home brewers state-wide in recent years, but he has collaborated professionally using his recipes with multiple breweries to great success and has been working toward opening his own brewery for years. Arning is likely best-known for his Andromeda IPA that he has brewed in collaboration with Saloon Door Brewing on multiple occasions. Arning is teaming up with former motion picture stuntman Jared Klein, who has been working in the craft beer scene since moving to Texas from California and brings business experience. Ennis and his Galactic Coast Brewing cofounder Michael Taylor will remain involved with CBBC once their consulting roles are done as team members.

SCOUT BAR 2018: Continued from Page 48
feBruarY: Following January, February promises even more one-of-a-kind tribute shows and noted rock bands! american hard rock band smile empty soul kicks off the month on the 2nd, followed by Baytown natives saturate on the 3rd. Then, brace yourself for Black sabbitch! This critically-acclaimed all-female tribute to Black Sabbath, whose members were hand-picked by Sharon and ozzy osbourne themselves to open the inaugural ozzfiesta in 2015, is not to be missed on the 8th. national act Trapt (most well-known for their 2002 hit “Headstrong”) will perform an acoustic set on the 10th, while Canadian progressive metal band Intervals will hit the stage on the 12th during part of their international “The Way Forward” tour. Finally, fans of the late Tom Petty should mark their calendars for the 17th, when The damn Torpedoes, a tribute to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, pay homage to one of the most recent huge losses in music.
marCH: american heavy metal band fozzy has been climbing the Billboard charts through the years – more significantly so in 2017 – and are now currently best known for their Top 5 hit “Judas” released just last may, a song with over 11 million views on youTube to date and now the anthem for professional wrestling show nXT Takeover: Chicago! Catch these atlanta natives with their distinctive metallica-Journey-esque blend on the 1st for their Judas rising Tour. Fans of humor and parody won’t want to miss march 4, when mac sabbath, an american parody heavy metal tribute band self-appointed founders of “drive thru metal,” rock the stage again as mcDonaldland characters performing fast-food centered, Black Sabbath sound-inspired songs. But wait, there’s more! This same show is a double-header of parody metal humor, and will also feature StarWars cosplay metal band Galactic empire! For those looking for a
more traditional tribute, however, Ozz (tribute to ozzy osbourne/Black Sabbath) returns to Scout on the 10th.
The end of march proves to be just as eclectic as the year begins at Scout Bar. american rapper mickey avalon will perform later in the month on the Galactic empire 22nd alongside dirt nasty, the alter ego of Simon rex — a name that may be familiar to some as he initially rose to fame as an mTV VJ in the ‘90s — on their 11th anniversary tour marking over a decade of performing and recording together. Cali-based reggae group fortumickey avalon nate Youth round out march on the 25th, while German metal icon udo dirkschneider returns on his Farewell to accept tour on the 28th. rob zombie guitarist John 5 (also of marilyn manson and David Lee roth Fame) closes out the month on the 31st for the John 5 & The Creatures It’s alive Tour 2018.
all in all, the first quarter of Scout Bar’s scheduled performances are an unparalleled mix of rap, metal, rock, burlesque, cosplay bands, noted national acts, and so much more! The Scout Bar website and Facebook page will continuously update fuller lists in the coming months as new acts are announced; however, make sure to take note of your favorite acts using this handy guide — and when you go, make sure to tell them The SCEnE sent you!

ParTY lIKe a ParrOT - along the Galveston Bay lives colonies of monk Parakeets. These bright green birds hang out in large communities and are non-stop – much like our Galveston Bay Parrot Heads (GBPH)… In December, we joined up with this lively flock at Scotty’s Pub on the Bay with robert Greaney on stage for their Holiday Happy Hour. In abundance was good cheer that evening and for good reasons. (1) Scotty’s has been a welcome addition filling in a gap along the 2094 corridor, (2) The GBPH had a phenomenal year at fundraising for worthy causes in 2017, (3) robert Greaney is not only one *really* fine musician with his six-string and sequence box, he is also among the finer entertainers we’ve got on the beat (keep an eye out for his new album in 2018). Pick any one of the above three and you’ve got a winner.

Loose Notes Happy new year!!! Lots of exciting days ahead! I’m definitely looking forward, but before we move ahead, let’s run down some of what all that went down in December:
by Andy Eng
HaIl & fareWell - Folks, I sincerely hope you got a chance to catch rat ranch in December. These guys went out with a blast, playing as if there was no tomorrow and even cooler was the crowds wherever they played, partying as if there was no tomorrow. This is certainly how I saw it the past few months and at Jackie’s Brickhouse in December. That night was not a typical night as many in the audience were clearly there for “one more show”. Sharing good times was happening too. I had an enjoyable chat with James who passed along a piece lore, how the band gave “burning down the house” true meaning at the Piggy Bank. From what I gather, it was an epic show, too.

We’ve enjoyed covering the band through the years, especially how they bring out the fun in their fans. I’ve mentioned on several occasions, while listening to their originals, that had the music business been like what we had in the ’70s, these guys would have certainly made it nationally. Thanks Brett, Kent, Scott and rick for all the great times and best - Continued on Page 45 wishes on your next chapters. Cheers!

By sarah Piña
Since Scout Bar’s inception, they have earned the reputation of bringing some of the nation’s biggest rock acts not just to Clear Lake, but to the greater Houston area in general. Since 1979, dug Pinnick (bass/vocals), Jerry Gaskill (drums/vocals), and Ty Tabor (guitar/vocals) — collectively known as the progressive metal and soul trio King’s X — have been making hit records, playing shows all over the world, and touring with some of the biggest rock bands in music history. The band has since ranked #83 on VH1's 100 Greatest artists of Hard rock, and have also released more than a dozen albums featuring the radio hits “It’s Love,” “Black Flag,” and “Dog man.”

The SCEnE magazine was recently honored with an interview with founding member and renowned bassist dug Pinnick, who recalled some of the band’s most memorable moments throughout their incredible career, as well as the future of a band (and Pinnick himself) that has had a longevity highly uncommon in the music industry and reserved only for other names such as KISS, aerosmith, the rolling Stones — and yes, aC/DC, who they have also performed alongside, as the story goes.
“Touring for four months with aC/DC in 1990 was just unbelievable, and the most incredible time. We did a European and an american tour together. Just imagine being in the rolls royce with these guys...it was just surreal, especially watching one of my favorite bands every night,” he remembered. “Woodstock in 1994 was also huge. Being played on mTV for the first time, in front of an audience like that, was unforgettable.”
