Since last october, Space center houston has been the first of four stops for a brand-new exhibit featuring the apollo 11 command module. this exhibit is the first time the apollo 11 spacecraft has left the Smithsonian's National air and Space Museum since 1971 following an initial national tour. But the exhibit will be moving on this month, ending oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to see the space capsules for both the first and last lunar landings. the apollo 17 command module and other artifacts from the last mission to land astronauts on the moon are part of Space center houston’s permanent collection. completing this ultimate lunar experience, Space center houston’s extensive collection gives guests a close look at the largest collection of moon rocks on public display including one you can touch. it also has astronaut Pete conrad’s moonwalking suit and much more.

“houston is associated with lunar exploration and guests get to trace the steps of the first voyage to the moon in this spectacular exhibit, as well as the last voyage in our apollo 17 capsule,” said William t. harris, ceo.

8th Annual Kemah Crawfish Festival APriL 6, 7 and 8

under The Kemah Bridge

Make plans to attend the seventh annual Kemah crawfish Festival on april 6, 7, and 8. experience the sights of the water, the thrill of a big party with like-minded individuals, the sounds of the best zydeco, country and texas party rock music, and the taste of ice cold beer as it combines with the seasoning on hot, scrumptious crawfish. Whether you plan “to keep calm and peel on,” or “go get your peel on,” partying and having a great time is on the top of the list of things to do. this crawfish celebration will be under the Kemah bridge on third Street where it started. the waterside location provides a better ambience.

Special viP option: Pay $20 and get admission plus 3 pounds of crawfish via a dedicated ViP express line.

“We will be cooking crawfish out of our new cooking units that will be able to produce 6,000 pounds of delicious boiled crawfish per hour!” said Doug Davenport of gulf coast Festivals.

these mudbugs are “spiced right and priced right” at $3.99 per pound. and you better bet they will taste fresh, too, since they are trucked in daily from farms in Louisiana. in addition to the crawfish, the festival will offer other cajun dishes and festival cuisine such as alligator, frog legs, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn dogs, funnel cakes, nachos, fried oreos and twinkies, gyros and much more!

“We are all about eating and music,” said Davenport. he recounted that in the years past, the event became one big dance floor. the live musical entertainment kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

if you have not been to the Kemah crawfish Festival, Davenport offers this advice, “the earlier you get there, the better.” general admission is $8. Kids 12 and under are free. those ready to start the weekend early can enter Friday at 3 p.m. the event hours are Friday from 3 to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Purchase tickets at the gate or at www.gulfcoastfestivals.com. Painter, sculptor, poet, author, playwright, singer, musician, radio talk show host, galveston history guide, gallery owner; what creative hat doesn’t george Douglas Lee wear? he joked regarding being a history guide, “Some of what i say is actually true.”

a genuine renaissance Man, Lee does everything in creative arts. Lee the painter, creates works from abstracts to French impressionism. he doesn’t paint himself By Kelley dawson into a corner or one style. he said folks are surprised to find he painted such different pieces hanging side by side.

“People ask, ‘What are you, some sort of renaissance man?’ guess i’m stuck with that,” said Lee. he and his wife recently celebrated the five-year anniversary of their art gallery in galveston. Lee revealed he feels like a big fish in a little pond as he is often recognized throughout galveston. Lee admitted being competitive brought him to art and he’s been doing it ever since. he explained during second grade he had an assignment to create the alamo for an art contest. he lost to another student. Lee then studied sketching, painting, and even watched an art show on tV in order to learn and grow his talent. he started creating with pastels and went on to paint with oil and acrylics. Lee studied art and earned a fine art degree. he stated he was influ-

enced by surrealism and his paintings reflect it.

his pieces captivate with technique and color. the art is absorbing of thought and holds the viewer’s attention. Lee informed, “My mother wanted me to be a painter and my father thought i should be a writer. So, i did both.” apparently, Lee is a juggler as well. Not only can he accomplish a dozen creative arts; he produces them all at the same time. he takes multi-tasking to a whole other level.

Lee expressed, “in my home; i’ll write upstairs, maybe finish the first act of a play, go downstairs work on unfinished painting, then go to a sculpture i’m working on or a commission piece, and record some music.”

Favorite perk of working in a brewery is meeting lots of fun and interesting people.

Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is when we first started canning it was fun, new and exciting, but now i would be ok if someone else took my place on canning day.

if you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? Waconia Brewing company because my brother is the head brewer there and professionally brewing with him would be quite the endeavor.

A collaboration brew at Galveston Island with Nobi Public House’s Channing Herrin (2nd from left).

Meet The Brewer: eriC WALKer Continued from Page 40

Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is that we deal with some rough chemicals. Be careful, its easy to get a chemical burn. otherwise, even menial type labor, like scrubbing the tun or kettle, squeegee/mopping, hauling off spent grain, is just a part of it, and doesn't take away from the coolness of the whole thing.

if you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? Jester King. a true farmhouse brewery, making in my opinion the best, most authentic beer on wholly their own terms. they are an inspiration of mine.

velcro Pygmies

LooSe NoTeS: Continued from Page 32

Bryan Shayne is a performer you’ve likely seen in the area. i was taken with his originals at the the Song Writers Festival and even more so with his full set. and even more so, Shayne did something i’ve never seen before and that was to get everybody up and dancing on the Monkey Bar patio. ever see that Bryan Shayne before?!?!?!? Bryan is a true local gem and has a great following with people coming in all the way from Fort Worth for the evening. Now that’s a following! Speaking of followings…. VeLCrO PYGMieS - it’s a new year and it was time to see Maximus Hawk, the new bassist Pygmy. Velcro Pygmy fans (Pig heads as they fondly call themselves) have got to be amongst the most sincerely loyal bunch of fans on this planet right up there in the same class as a Spazmatics fan. (You know the type…) this group, in my opinion, is one that centers on putting the entertainment first and use the music to convey the show which clearly works well. another interesting thing about this band is they don’t care velcro Pygmies about saving money on electric bills; Bringing along with them on their nationwide tours, walls of good old fashion flood lamps, the kind hot enough to bake a chicken and great for taking photos. if you’re a band or operate a live music venue, tungsten flood lamps aren’t totally necessary for great looking photos. Daylight LeDs work well, too. as for fans, there are a lot of fine local live music happening in the area. Find yourself a band to follow and be a fan of local live music. if you’ve any questions, be on the safe side and follow as many as you can.

iT’S A WrAP - 2018 got off to a sluggish start with the flu bug and cold weather putting a damper on things. Never fear, spring will soon be here! May your picks go deep in your basketball brackets, may our hometown baseball heroes have a great year, and may tending to our yards not keep us from the important stuff, which is getting out and about to the many great venues, our fantastic service industry, and throughout enjoy some of our great live music. cheers!

Wood ‘N Wind

LooSe NoTeS: Continued from Page 35

VALeNTiNe’S dAY 2018 - this year came on a Wednesday and when i saw Wood ‘N Wind on the card at T-Bone Tom’s, i knew a stop was in order as this intersect is fondly remembered as the place of the Kemah Jam. the jam has since passed as has tom’s huge old oaks but the music remains. Like many, this band has been rebuilding leaving no piece of wood untouched and this evening, joined up with Stix on the kit. one of my favorite indicators of the music at t-Bone’s is not just watching the ViPs, the little ones, getting off to the music but watching how many diners stop eating and tuning into the music while their dinners get cold. there was a lot of both this month. Musically, the house enjoyed their new arrangement from traffic that you’ll never hear played live anywhere else. Special that evening was the dual lead vocals from Bobbie and angie, captivating and in the realm of music power levels where the brothers thomas and Jeff Wilson reside. good stuff!!! SNOWBird SeASON - is arguably our best time of year as we enjoyed February in Kemah. heavy fogs provided surreal settings on our Lighthouse District strolls to the Monkey Bar, Zone 504 and T-Bone Tom’s for some exquisite live music and to spend quality time with friends. Bryan Shane, Ben reyna, and drop dead dangerous were on the lineup at last year’s Song Writer’s Festival and follow-ups were in order. Ben was deservedly feaChristain tured in the February issue of the Weigand SceNe Magazine by the awesome Sarah Piña and this month, we traded insightful tales of what goes into making a professionally produced cD.

Matt Cash

at Zone 504, we caught enjoyable solo sets from Matt Cash and Christian Weigand. the zone was relaxed that night allowing the music to take on an up-close and personal appeal which not comes from simply playing the tune, drop dead but by living the story’s moment as its played. dangerous this is a fine line of talent that not many get trudy Lynn is such a performer and Matt cash is on that list too. catching up with christian, he’s still playing with the Band hennessy and got an interesting project in the works. i can’t think of a better artist to pull it off. Stay tuned!

drop dead dangerous is a dynamite duet of vocalist and guitar player, Kitty Steadmand and Melanie howe, commonly known as “the Djembabe” that was introduced to the area thanks to the Pirate and Poets circuit. this evening, we enjoyed their americana set. this pair is truly musically unique and captivating to the ears. Definitely keep an eye out for when these two stop in for a show. - Continued on Page 31

JACKie’S BriCKhouSe: from Page 48

While the recent ownership change has translated into these updates of food, service, and soon, atmosphere, Jackie’s is also known for the exceptional live musicians and bands that pack the dance floor each weekend. in this regard, they will feature more high-caliber, production-heavy bands in March and beyond!

“We’re really looking forward to having even more of these great bands perform at Jackie’s, such as the KLo:cKS, La roxx, the Velcro Pygmies, that 70s thing, and Vitamin r: a tribute to chevelle,” Williams said.

in addition to so many lively bands coming to perform in the coming months, Jackie’s will also host a St. Patrick’s Day Bash featuring live music from the band Swagger! guests can enjoy live music on the patio with their hot crawfish and cold beer every Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. Jackie’s will also continue to feature several great food and drink specials throughout the week, including $5 whiskeys, steak night on Wednesdays, and happy hour Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“We are not looking to reinvent the wheel – we’re just going to fine tune it a little,” Williams said. “John (Barrera) has continued to do an outstanding job, even with the ownership change. We’re really looking forward to the future and the new horizons ahead!”

Jackie’s Brickhouse is located at 1053 Marina Bay Dr. in Kemah, and is open every day. current hours are Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to midnight, and thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. So stop by for a cold one, some great crawfish, or just to enjoy your visit with some of the best live entertainment the Bay area has to offer – and when you do, be sure to tell them the SceNe sent you! ----------------------------------------------

The WeedS: Continued from Page 47

So what can audiences expect who haven’t seen the Weeds perform before? “expect lots of variety, fun, and aggressiveness, because we play with a lot of passion,” said Damian. “this makes the show really energetic, always. i'm honored to be a part of such talented, driven musicians. i've been in several bands chasing this dream, and i'm honored i was chosen to be a part of the ride. it’s going to be a great time!”

zePPAreLLA: Continued from Page 46

So in a male-dominated musical genre, what does it mean to be a part of an all-female rock band? “it became something that helped to define the band. there’s a real sisterhood with these other incredible musicians,” she said. the all-female aspect has had other effects as well on audiences; zepparella inevitably serve as a source of inspiration for young female musicians and beyond each time they step on stage. “the impression people have said we’ve left on them can be powerful and humbling. Music can have a magical effect, really a true symbiosis. it has the ability to comfort, inspire, unite. if our playing zeppelin inspires or empowers or entertains, that’s amazing. if it gives women idea or permission to do something outside of the more normal paradigm, that’s amazing.”

and when zepparella hits the Scout Bar stage later this month, expect an exciting tribute to Led zeppelin by four musicians who continue to pay homage to their musical heroes—but in their own way.

“clementine is a monster on the drums—we are loud! But don’t expect us to dress or mimic them. We are here to perform heartfelt renditions of music we genuinely love. expect a rock show!”

zepparella will perform next at Scout Bar on Saturday, March 24! Doors open at 8 p.m.; show begins at 9 p.m. So come show a “Whole Lotta Love” to this all-female zeppelin powerhouse, and when you do—be sure to tell them the SceNe sent you!

BACK HOMe - and that would be Mark May at Katie’s. Last year’s run, trying to catch a new and different act each month at Katie’s, kept our paths from crossing, but it’s a new year, and well past due to catch up with this Master guitar channeler. People are wising up and starting to reserve tables for the Sunday afternoon open mic session and for good reason. i’m used to catching May on Friday or Saturday evenings pushing it past the 11’s all night long. on this sunny Sunday in February, Mark took the house down to soulful jazzy 46 db adagietto. once the entire house was safely on board, May plugged into the music cosmos as he always does, and proceeded to take the entire house to a spine-tingling Pretissimo frenzy using every note available on his robin and Naylor “killer vintage” amp. to keep people from falling overboard, Joe Mark May Campise and Bob emmons are there on kit and bass to hold down the fort. i call it musical genius and judging from the ovation in the house, a “WoW” moment also comes to mind! campise tells me that playing with May is a real workout - an entire one-hour set will consist of only five songs. think about that…. We in the house call it a treat! open mics at Katie’s are special, always featuring a strong guest musician lineup. Musicians sign up for a chance to share the stage with these “professors” of the groove making for enjoyable jams. i had a great chat with Mark during the break, catching-up since his return from ohio and what’s on the horizon. Stay tuned in!

FLiCKer BOWL Viii - With the Walter Payton award deservedly in the hands of our hometown hero, J.J. Watts, it was time to get to business and enjoy annual Flicker Bowl at T-Bone Tom’s. We’ve been covering this fun event from day one when Bruce cote started making this event happen. With the two Super Bowl teams this year being from up north, the patio crowd was enjoyably relaxed and the weather at a perfect 68 degrees. over the years, Flicker Bowl has clearly grown with solid competition and keen prize pools from the generous sponsors not just for the winners alone representatives from Karbach, Jim Beam, and Budweiser made sure there was plenty of great swag for all. congratulations to runner up, Ventura Berrones, and to david Cosgrove for taking home this year’s trophy. cheers!!! - Continued on Page 32

Blaggards We joined up with Scarlett Mccaw, whose village of merry mongers restored the storied pirate ship that was once sailed under in the local Krewe du Lac flag. i’ve been watching Mardi gras floats over the years and noticed age having its effect on the once-grand floats from the big time krewes -- not with this ship! rebuilt from the frame up, this float served notice that she was back and in fine form as we threw beads at the aquarius, Babalu, and Fat tuesday parades. over-the-top was having the Blaggards playing live on the ship, a truly gusto filled ride. Now *that* was a hoot! all of the big-time galveston Krewes took notice and welcomed us warmly into the royalty filled Blessing of the Season post parade party.

Speaking of post parade parties, we caught friends from the past and made friends of new while enjoying lots of very good live music shows with Night Wave and the Blaggards at the Drunken Monkeyz and the Line Up at the Buckshot Saloon. Next on the horizon? epicurean evening and crawfish season!

Loose Notes March Madness is upon us, good people! We’ve put up with a yardkilling winter, survived flu season, held our own during Mardi gras, continuing to reckon rebuilding from harvey, cheered our athletes through the olympics, and best of all, we got to hang out with many of you and enjoy some really fantastic live music out and about the area. Let’s run down some of what went down.

by Andy Eng

Almost endless Summer

MArdi GrAS MAdNeSS came early this year with events happening each weekend in our area. the turnout to celebrate the reign of King Barry Terrell, Queen Patty eng and the court of Duchesses partied the night away at the Aquarium with a great showing of past royalty, the Mayor of Kemah, Miss Kemah & Miss teen Kemah, friends of old and new, and perhaps the final showing of galveston’s award winning Almost endless Summer who brought in their Beach Boy european invasion to entertain Mardi gras party.

this year’s annual Kemah Parade and party at T-Bone Tom’s didn’t have to worry about rain this year with the palapa keeping everybody warm and dry. Wood ‘N Wind treated the post parade party to their eclectic style of americana rock. Up the road in La Porte, those good people have realized what a great time can be had by all and starting up their community parade and celebration. i heard some ideas of someday having events throughout the Kemah Lighthouse District and a multiday celebration…. that would be grand!! - Continued on Page 36

Texas Beer Enthusiast On Demand CO2 Delivery

Meet The Brewer: Jason Stromberg Headbrewer at Galveston Island Brewing

Favorite Texas brewed beer? Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? In response to both those questions, it is really hard to pick a favorite beer in Texas and in other states and countries. The beer that is my favorite is the one I am drinking that day.

Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? I really like to fire up our 5BBL system and do one offs to experiment with different styles and recipes.

What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? Sours and wild beers

Galveston Island Brewing

Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? In a bungalow in Bora Bora with my wife.

8423 Stewart Rd. • Galveston, Texas

Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? Driving across Wisconsin and shopping at every disc golf course we could, while pounding 30 packs of High Life. The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. I worked for Midwest Supplies home brew shop which influenced me to become a professional brewer.

Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. Pay close attention to fermentation and keep your yeast healthy.

“The state of the Texas craft beer scene is…. up and coming and making a name for itself. - Continued on Page 30

Meet The Brewer: Eric Walker

Headbrewer at Devil and the Deep Brewery

Favorite Texas brewed beer? La Petit Prince Jester King

Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? Trappistes Rochefort 10

Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? My basic Saison. I love that beer, and it always seems to be a good time when we brew it.

What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? Lighter Saisons, Farmhouse Ales, and other clean examples of some of the more “off-thebeaten-path” Belgian-inspired brews. Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? I want to take a roadtrip and visit the remaining Trappist monastery breweries in Belgium and France. Hopefully in 2019!

Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? Our first full pint off of the sample port of our brite tank when it was carbed. It was our Belgian Rye Pale Ale, and it was great. A couple of the guys and I had one, and toasted the work we had done to get to that point.

Devil and the Deep Brewery (NEW) 2425 Postoffice St • Galveston, Texas

The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. I was in the Navy and Army for 11years prior to college, and was most recently a Vessel Manager prior to going full time at the Brewery.

Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. Keep at it! Make beer, give it to people, seek unbiased critique. And then, make more beer, give it away for critique. Go to every brewery you can, and talk to the brewers. Our industry is excellent in that we have a very close, team-like environment and love to help each other out with questions / answers / concerns / hops / the occasional brewery fitting. “The state of the Texas craft beer scene is…. Growing, and with huge potential and space to do so.

Favorite perk of working in a brewery is the beer of course! Seriously though, brewing is a craft pursuit, and is an excellent trade to enter. It is very multi-disciplinary. Brewing is only a small part. There is carpentry, plumbing, electrical, the business management side of it. And of course you can have a pint when mopping the floors. Perks of the job! - Continued on Page 30

over 10 years ago, one woman set out to create a musical project unlike any other: establish an all-female band with musicians of the highest caliber to pay homage to one of the most iconic rock groups of all time. today, founding member clementine on drums, along with anna Kristina on vocals, texas native holly West on bass, and gretchen Menn on lead guitar continue that mission as zepparella, an all-female band honoring Led zeppelin.

“We have all just always loved zeppelin, and had the desire to learn the vocabulary of some of our favorite players,” said Menn. “i have studied Jimmy Page’s music note for note, because that’s part of internalizing his vocabulary. it’s like learning and trying to master a new language.”

Menn—who also has an impressive background as a former regional jet pilot, and a music degree from Smith college—is much like all members of the group as well: an established career musician with several notable projects under her belt outside of zepparella, including two solo albums, abandon all hope (2016) and hale Souls (2011).

“We all do original music, and it’s all very different from one another. Between the four of us we have a wide variety of influences,” said Menn, who herself has intensely studied Mozart, Beethoven, Steve Morse, and Frank zappa, to name a few. “For example, anna just came out with a gorgeous solo album, which is really jazzy and bluesy called Soul truth. clementine has a number of original bands as well, including Beaux cheveaux, an original project with adrian conner of hell’s Belles. and holly has a solo eP out called Mokita,” Menn said. - Continued on Page 34

JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE

“the movie School of rock, that was really the nail in the coffin. Seeing little kids playing music — i said, i could do that,” recalled addison ruddell of one of his inspirations to play music.

Not too many years later, ruddell, a product of a musical family, and now lead singer and bass guitarist for the Weeds did just that, starting the band in 2013 — while still in the 6th grade. Lead guitarist and backup vocalist Jonathan hales soon joined him, along with drummer ryan Damian a few years later.

“i started playing guitar when i was 10. My dad was into classic rock, and he started teaching me how to play, and then i sort of just picked it up on my own. after a couple of years, i would have him take me to different bars that would let me in, since i was only 12. this led me to playing an open mic where addison’s aunt, a country singer, saw me play. She really liked what she heard, and got me in touch with addison who had just recently started the band,” hales said. “We jammed one song, and we just knew we were going to click,” ruddell recalled of their first meeting.

ruddell and hales have electrified stages and amazed crowd after crowd ever since with their unique fusion of blues/funk/rock/reggae — especially after people realize that both are only 18 years old. though young (ruddell is only nearing high school graduation; hales recently began college for audio engineering), their mature talent beyond their years hasn’t fallen short of recognition.

in august of 2014, after less than a year together, they headlined the texas Buzz, a show hosted by houston’s 94.5 the Buzz. Shortly thereafter, they also won “Best New Band of 2014,” exactly one year to the day of their first performance together. and most recently, the band also took home this year’s Support Local Music (SLM) award for Best Local Band, while individually each member also received awards: hales for Best guitarist, Damian for Best Drummer, and ruddell for Vocals - honorable Mention.

and now with high school graduation on the horizon, the band’s star just seems to be beginning to take off. these musical prodigies, who have already opened for several nationally-known bands and artists including the ataris, Saliva, Sons of texas, Saving abel, Lita Ford, and most recently, Doyle Bramhall ii, already have big plans for recording and more touring in the works, and a self-titled eP available everywhere from itunes to Spotify.

“We do plan on touring a lot more after addison graduates, and have two albums we hope to release this Spring. one is a live studio album which is in the last stages of production,” said hales, who with his audio engineering background will be working to finalize mixing on both albums.

Jackie’s Brickhouse:

your hangout for fabulous food, delicious drinks, Badass Bands & Super Service By Sarah Piña

established eight years ago in Kemah, Jackie’s Brickhouse has made a name for itself as a go-to spot for great food and some of the most dynamic entertainment and nightlife in the Bay area. Serving up everything from mouthwatering burgers, to hot and tasty mudbugs, area residents have enjoyed the mix of fun dining, drinks, live music, along with shuffleboard, pool, darts, and arcade games since 2010. and this summer, thanks to a new ownership group, Jackie’s will unveil some fun upgrades to add into the mix!

“Jackie’s concept is getting a slight makeover while continuing to provide the quality of food and fun that our guests have come to expect,” explained general Manager John Barrera, who has lead Jackie’s Brickhouse since its inception. “We already unveiled a new logo, and we have plans for some outdoor patio renovations/expansions including adding bars to

enhance our guests’ experience. We are bringing in new food items, restructuring our menu and improving our standards of service.”

“at the forefront of all our changes, we have one common goal: quality. if we fine-tune our quality overall, it will enrich our guests’ visit,” said Managing Partner greg Williams, part of the new ownership group. “We look forward to improving quality across the board, from top to bottom in terms of service and as well as the food itself.”

For example, Jackie’s Brickhouse hand-washes and culls their crawfish and season their mudbugs with a custom blend from Southern Louisiana. “We also buy the highest grade oysters available to us and we increased the quality of our beef to certified angus,” Williams explained. “how food is ordered, received, prepared and served — we are really fine-tuning all of these processes,” said Williams.

Palapa Bar Celebrating 15 years of Partying on the Patio By Shawn domingues

Located on the corner of 6th Street and Kipp avenue, just off the beaten path of the busy Kemah Boardwalk, the Palapa Bar boasts of being the original bar on the block, so to speak, and the first to offer a large palapacovered patio in the area.

“there are a lot of bars and restaurants in the area with palapas now – imitation is the best form of flattery,” said owner greg Boaz, “but most of the patios are an afterthought, or an additional area for seating when weather permits… but we have always been a patio bar, first and foremost.”

With heaters blazing during the cold winter month, rain or shine, the party is on the patio at the Palapa Bar, but they also have a bar and dance floor located inside and a live DJ every Friday and Saturday night to keep the party going indoors as well,

a combination that has proven to be successful in an industry sometimes known for shorter life spans. “We’ve always hired experienced bartenders, and i give a lot of credit for our success to the various bartenders we’ve had over the past 15 years,” said Boaz.

in honor of their anniversary, former bartenders will be making guest appearances all month long.

although they offer drink specials every night of the week, the casual atmosphere of the Palapa Bar appeals more to the locals Sunday through thursday, with the “weekenders” joining the party on Friday and Saturday nights.

“anyone that comes in a stranger leaves as a friend, sort of like cheers where ‘everybody knows your name,’” said long-time customer ashley Niederhofer. everyone is always welcome, of course, especially on April 7 (6 p.m. to 2 a.m.) when the Palapa Bar hosts their 15th Anniversary Party. there will be raffle prizes up for grabs, $5 Quinceañera shots and $5 drink specials all night. Stop by, show your support, and tell them the SceNe sent you.
