Noah’s Ark on Galveston Bay:

More than a restaurant, it’s a destination! By Betsey Ennis

overlooking galveston Bay, away from the hustle and bustle of tourist traffic, find Noah’s Ark restaurant, an ark-inspired building with a 3800square-foot palapa nestled on top and waterfront patio awaiting your next getaway.

What makes the Noah’s Ark and the parrots Nest such a great perch for your next get-awayfrom-the-every-day? here are some things that set this establishment apart from other restaurant/bars:

owners, Fred lyttle, Kellie Verlander and Steven tolhurst have been imagining and reimagining the evolving restaurant-turned-escape-destination into what it is today.

• The View: “Noah’s Ark is the only place for miles around, where you can sit in an upstairs palapa bar or on a waterfront deck, eat, drink, listen to live music and have a awesome view of galveston Bay!” said tolhurst.

on weekends in particular, tolhurst visits each table and personally greets guests. he said, “When i go around and ask guests where they are from i hear that they have traveled for miles to enjoy Noah’s: from the Woodlands, humble, Katy, downtown houston. i also hear that they brought their friends from all over the country and some from overseas. We love that Noah’s is a must-see destination for them!”

“Be sure to try Noah’s ‘famous’ oyster Shooters,” he suggested. the entire menu is available upstairs in the palapa bar, downstairs, and on the three patios. - Continued on Page 26

lyttle explained, “my wife Beverly and i vacation in Belize often, and we’ve modeled the upstairs palapa bar after some of our favorite destinations there.” he said, “i’ve had many people tell me they feel like they are on vacation when they’re in the parrots Nest (the upstairs palapa bar).”

• Diverse Menu: Noah’s Ark’s staff prides themselves on providing a delicious dining experience. the menu offers casual to upscale fare, from handmade hamburgers to grilled red snapper, or wings (nine styles) to hand-breaded chicken strips and shrimp. Newer menu items include the California Chicken Sandwich and the turkey Club with Avocado. tolhurst noted that the most popular appetizers are the hot mermaids (bacon-wrapped shrimp with jalapeño, fried or grilled) and the Fresh oysters (raw or grilled).

RESTAURANT REPORT

RUSSO’S NY PIzzERIA

The Simplicity of a New York Pizzeria with the Quality of an Upscale Italian Restaurant

1660 W. FM 646, Suite C, League City (Located in the Target Shopping Center)

HOurS OF OPErATiON: Sunday – thursday 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Friday & Saturday 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Breakfast Saturday & Sunday 8 – 11 a.m.

renowned chef, Anthony russo, discovered his passion for cooking authentic italian dishes when he was just 12-years-old. growing up in his family’s restaurant (russo’s italian restaurant) in galveston, Anthony spent plenty of time in the kitchen with his family and other influential italian chefs, learning how to prepare classic italian dishes from his family’s recipes passed down through generations. in the early 1990s, Anthony opened his first restaurant, Anthony’s pizzeria in Clear lake. his father’s phrase, “if you can’t make it fresh, don’t serve it,” has been the foundation on which Anthony has built many successful restaurants over the years, including the upscale Café Anthony’s in houston. Wanting to blend the simplicity and casual atmosphere of a pizzeria with the quality and sophistication of an upscale italian restaurant, Anthony opened russo’s New York pizzeria in houston, and it became the model of success for the chain of pizzerias he developed. the league City location is celebrating its 10th year in business, and continues to thrive as it carries out Anthony’s original vision of serving authentic italian dishes using only the freshest ingredients, while maintaining high standards of service.

SPECiALTiES: All of the pizzas are hand-crafted using dough that is made fresh daily. their 28-inch pizzas are perfect for larger parties and can feed up to 10 or 12 people (or 14-16 kids); even more when sliced into smaller-portioned squares. Specialty pizzas include a margherita pizza, the Caprese pizza (Buffalo mozzarella, fresh garlic, roma tomatoes, sweet basil and their homemade pizza sauce) and the greek pizza (fresh spinach, roma tomatoes, italian black olives, feta and mozzarella cheeses, garlic and organic extra virgin olive oil), to name a few. they have a selection of Napoletana pizzas (made with a thinner crust and shaped like a square), including the Spinach, Kale & Artichoke pizza (topped with all-natural mozzarella cheese and roasted garlic, in a creamy Alfredo sauce) and Andrea’s Specialty pizza (grilled chicken, prosciutto di parma, spinach, roma tomatoes and gorgonzola cheese, with extra virgin olive oil and fresh garlic). they also have gluten-free options and build-your-own pizzas as well. their pasta dishes (spaghetti, spaghetti and meatballs and lasagna) are homemade with a traditionally prepared meat sauce or marinara sauce and include garlic bread, and they also have homemade italian soups, fresh salads, classic calzones and sandwiches.

Signature entrées include the Chicken pesto pasta (Al dente penne pasta with grilled chicken, vineripened roma tomatoes and artichoke hearts, tossed in a freshly-prepared pesto cream sauce) and rigatoni rosso (fresh rigatoni pasta, sweet basil, all-natural buffalo mozzarella cheese, with a Bolognese Chianti meat sauce and romano cheese). Customers can pick out their desserts from the display case upfront, so they know how much room they need to leave for dessert, such as the turtle Cheesecake, the pistachio Cheesecake or the popular oreo Cheesecake. russo’s

We were left with heavy hearts early last month after learning that this area lost a true artist, a mentor to many and a great man with the passing of South Shore harbour resort executive Chef roland Kyburz. We at the SCeNe, like many others, lost a friend. Chef Kyburz’s skill and talent touched many in ways they are likely unaware of over the years from fabulous menus at banquets and events hosted by SShr to his awesome annual gigantic gingerbread houses, which was a labor of love. he had a passion for food and a zest for life. he will be truly missed by many. our thoughts and prayers are with the Kyburz family and all who love him.

A Local Media Company & Creative Firm GETTING RESULTS Since 1998

our area lost a good friend late last month when Joe F. Gonzalez iii (or Joe Jr, as we called him) was taken far too early. Chances are if you love mexican food and have lived in this area for a while, he once welcomed you to mamacita’s flagship restaurant on NASA road 1 in Webster. From the first time we met Joe, he was instantly our friend... he was always welcoming, kind, thoughtful and enthusiastic. in the most recent years, we've missed seeing his face and shaking his hand because he had been running one his family's mamacita's locations on the north side of town. our heart is breaking for the gonzalez family: his parents Joe and Alma, his siblings gina, Diane and Christian, his two children, the entire mamacita's and el Jardin extended restaurant family and all those who loved him. rest in peace, our friend. We will miss you.

THE WOOD WHISPERER Featured Artist: BRIAN HARRIS

Brian harris never considered himself an artist.“i’m the least likely artist ever in this magazine. i failed art in seventh grade,” he admitted. he told he took the art elective and was not the best student.

harris’ family consists of homebuilders, cabinet makers, and other artists; though, he insists he can’t draw a straight line. harris teased, “i just try to walk straight without falling over.” it By Kelley Dawson took disbelief to turn harris’ own artistic talent skepticism around. A fellow artist created some wooden fish. A right angle saw had been utilized to produce certain markings such as gills. harris didn’t believe it, and so began his journey into woodworking. harris fabricated a similar wooden fish. he said, “i didn’t follow the pattern, but it came out good. i grabbed some spray paint and painted it myself.”

his family and friends soon wanted his wooden art. “that’s how it all started,” expressed harris. having always been intrigued by machines, harris wanted a wood lathe. he purchased a 30-year-old lathe which came with many hand tools. harris acknowledged, “i never tried one. i can do this.” he started with a piece of found driftwood and turned it. “Not sure what i was going to make; i just turned the wood and tried not to kill myself,” stated harris. he shared he watched several Youtube videos and turned other wooden pieces. “i liked it. i got a new [lathe],” he declared.

harris practiced and honed his wood crafting skills. he gave his creations away as gifts. harris then began fulfilling orders per the request of his gift receivers. “A friend commissioned me. i thought i am an artist now,” he affirmed.

According to harris, wood crafting is relaxing and “cool.” he informed much of the wood he uses is recycled from friends’ trees that had to be cut down or pieces found on their properties. he also barters for wood in exchange for his wooden creations and buys some more exotic wood from internet sites. harris forges wooden bowls, vases, handles for knifes and utensils, and unique pieces. his crafts are made from many types of wood including pecan and mesquite. harris even incorporates cactus pods, watch gears, colored pencils, copper pieces, and more with resins to compose one-of-a-kind wooden works of art. the resin allows him to generate remarkable colors. his wooden productions embody organic artistry with man-made ingenuity. harris disclosed the wood’s patterns exist naturally; yet, his manipulation accentuates each piece.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACES START 40TH SEASON

You don’t need to know the difference between the “main” and the “jib” to enjoy and appreciate the Bay Area’s most beautiful spectator sport, sailing. Few places anywhere on the planet have the kind of sailing community that is found in the Bay Area. this area is home to competitive sailing programs and races run by a number of yacht clubs and local sailing associations. For anyone who loves to sail, who could ask for a better place to live or visit than the Bay Area? But sailing is also a fabulous spectator sport, and our area offers residents and visitors the rare opportunity to enjoy the impressive sight of sailing up-close and personal during the Wednesday Night races on Clear lake. A month of sailing seminars has concluded and the opening party/Skippers meeting is in the books. the 40th season kicked off on the last Wednesday of march. the organizing body is the Clear lake racing Association, an informal association of sailing enthusiasts from all the sailing clubs around the houston/galveston Bay area.

During the months of April to october (during Daylight Savings time), there is enough light left over in the day to get off work, and head for the docks to launch boats and get in a sailboat race. the Wednesday Night races are a wonderful mid-week break, and the short distances between marks provide a great venue to sharpen boat and sail-handling skills.

the best spectator outpost and official host venue is Villa Capri in Seabrook where a crowd gathers to watch the races and listen to the commentary from the race announcer. After the race, all the sailors gather at Villa Capri restaurant to join the spectators for food and drinks and the trophy presentation. other spectator spots include Barge 295 (former turtle Club) and Cabo

there are Wednesday Night Sailboat races held all over the country, but those held in Clear lake are unique because many of the marks are placed close to spectator viewing locations. So close, in fact, the spectators get a really good look at the teamwork required to get the jib up and douse the spinnaker. Yacht races are not known as a spectator sport, but when they are viewed in the comfort and proximity of a convenient dock (instead of the middle of a large body of water), it can be quite entertaining and is an event to check out at least once if not weekly. these races began locally in the late ‘70s and have evolved. major changes continued from the 2016 season include that the number of races have been cut down, and there will be no season ending championship series. one other major change will be a bye week (week of no racing) between each series. Note: After dominating the crowded J-24 class at the races in recent years, skipper of the the SCeNe sailing team Stuart lindow is taking the 2018 Wednesday Night race season off to assist with the SCeNe’s efforts to document the races, and other area events and attractions, from above via aerial drone.

Our Clear Lake Elks Lodge supports the local veterans and special needs children and the community at large. the band also regularly incorporates cover songs with their own reggae spin, many of which have become fan favorites. “We’ll do everything from hip-hip to rock to oldies, all with our own reggae fusion flavor, and those always get the crowd going. our original songs like ‘Sunshine’ and ‘i love my Job’ are favorites as well,” he said. And soon, fans can enjoy their first album.

“We have a live studio recording coming out soon, which really captures our live show well as a band,” he said. “i really believe in our sound, a lot of which is based on emotion. it’s relatable, and it’s raw, that’s really the best word to describe it.” Behind the music, however, there’s also a deeper message, said Abu-pain.

“For us, our music is something that’s really representative of where we live. What i want to do is build bridges. that’s the message we try to send each show. We just want the world to be one big family. it doesn’t matter what side of the fence you’re on,” he said. “every show we leave everything out there we got. it may be a similar set list, but we never do the same thing twice.”

King Baby Familia will perform next in the Bay Area at Scout Bar along with national act through the roots for their Coast to Coast tour, as well as local favorites SataDaze and Kindebudz on April 25. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show begins at 7:30 p.m. And when you go—make sure to tell them the SCeNe sent you!

gether, but i feel healthy and happiness go along with doing what you love. Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. Brew what you love and with passion. good beer will sell itself. i don’t have much experience compared to most, but i would say don’t buy into hype if you don’t love it. “The state of the Texas craft beer scene is…. thriViNg. there’s a local brewery around every corner and more popping up. Favorite perk of working in a brewery is meeting new people and educating them on the beer you brew. hearing that people enjoy your beer is also a really cool feeling Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is..? is there a least favorite thing? i guess the cleaning would be it. Brewing beer is a meticulous process, and 50% or more is cleaning cleaning cleaning. if you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? i would say Jester King, the area alone is awesome. learning how to make the types of beer they do is another level from regular brewing. Would be great to learn that and be able to apply it to my own brewing styles.

So what can one expect if they’ve never attended a grifters & Shills performance? “it’s going to be a guaranteed good time, with good energy. each song we perform really means something to us. it’s an authentic experience,” John said.

grifters & Shills will perform at t-Bone tom’s in Kemah on April 25 beginning at 6 p.m. (a full show list is also available at griftersandshills.com)—and when you go, make sure to tell them the SCeNe sent you!

TOur STOP CLEAr LAKE We caught Zepparella at Scout Bar last July. that show totally rocked the house with precision and ease. in march, band leader and drummer, Clementine, returned with guitarist gretchen menn (on my top female rock & roll guitarist list along with Nancy Wilson). this time around, Anna Kristina returned to the lineup while Noelle Doughty is on break and holly West, the band’s new bass player replaces Angelina Saris who left the band in February. Clear?

on the high side of the evening, fans were very much filled with anticipation for this show and a share of the credit goes to Low Man’s Joe as the warm up act. Anna was a treat with her strong vocal & harp performances along with her ability to connect with the audience which was right up there with Keith Urban.

this time around, Clementine & gretchen were much more relaxed and at home inside the cozy Scout Bar venue. the groove of this four-piece lineup, was noticeably different than their show last July and probably shouldn’t have been a surprise with their recent departure of Saris at bass within only month. Did the show satisfy? Check! Will we see this band again? You bet! i’m sure many of you will, too. See you when it happens!

iT’S A WrAP - lots of good things happening around town these days. our hometown baseball team will be targeted as the team to beat, and i’m looking forward to that challenge. our hometown basketball team will hopefully make it yet even further. ‘tis time for outdoor fun and according to the out of towners i chat with, we’ve got some really fantastic live music in our area that they wish they had. Be a pal and take your out-of-town guests to one of the many fine places we have for food, spirits & live music — they’ll think you’re a genius. See you out there!

NEW STOP ON THE BEAT - Which would be Barge 295 at the site of the former turtle Club. Walking onto this floating bar, you can feel the makeover that’s happening as the place has scored the right new owner. the days of test pilots roaming free have long past but there’s a fresh feel shaping up at the Barge that i found refreshing, that i’m going to keep a secret and not tell anybody… ;-) one notable change is now, the band stage is outside on the upper deck — while we’ve several music venues with music near the water, this is the first and only stage literally on the water.

in march, piledrive productions brought in Six Gun Keys who in my mind made for a perfect fit at Barge 295 with their big-air concert song list of popular rock & roll favorites. i’d seen this band a couple of times playing at the Joe palermo benefits; i was impressed back then to know a follow up was in order. tammie is one of the area’s top-shelf female vocalists in the gusto category. guitarist robert Quintanilla is not only a technically accurate player of the cover song notes, he has an incredible ear and mastery of the signal path, getting a sound which in my mind sounds better than the original cover — a Wizard-Class tone monster. my old favorite spots for watching bands near the water was at the former Clifton’s By the Sea back in the day and the long gone Sundance grill in Seabrook. i’ve a feeling Barge 295 will be one sizzling live music club this summer — to be continued...

NEW SOuND iN SAN LEON - We caught the debut of roger Little and Common Ground on the stage at railean Distillery — the place was packed with their people. Ain’t nobody feeling no pain here! there was a notable good vibe in the place and the mojitos were exceptionally good. they use real juices in the drinks here — not the syrup method... Until now, Common ground, a band of local area musicians, played at private and wedding parties, just now testing the waters on the club scene. thinking about it, wedding bands have to play quite a variety of music for the diverse ages of people which better extrapolates as a guaranteed good fit on the local live music scene — the inverse of a good bar band doing well playing at weddings doesn’t always work as well. going to keep an eye open for roger little and Common ground. - Continued on Page 33

BACK ON THE BEAT - Which would be Signatures at their present location, formerly the site of Cock & Bull and emily’s, where the live music has always flourished. in march, we caught Andy and The Dreamsicles stirring up the house. this band is notorious for bending the needle on the Fun meter, bringing along a their crowd, and making new fans wherever they play — this evening was no different. When we arrived, the place was at capacity meaning we got to hang out with more than several of you - thanks for the party!

BiG BAD SOuND - these days, he goes by the moniker Erock Garza... Seems fitting… thousands have enjoyed garza’s music over the years with pirate radio throughout the area and in march, joined up with local veteran musician Hugo rodriguez on the stage at Jackie’s Brickhouse for a strong modern day dinner crowd show. Just when it seemed we were getting to see more of garza, he put down the microphone and headed north to help others in need while supporting his family. So we look forward to the next time he is back on a local stage. Back to the subject of dinner, the kitchen crew at Jackie’s recently has done a superb job assembling a new menu and dialing in on what people like — makes sense to me!

POST rODEO WiND DOWN - rodeo’s over, spring break’s over, it’s a Wednesday evening and a pleasant 60 degrees outside… traffic into the lighthouse District was a breeze. Walking through the Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack parking lot, a pure country sound mixes with the cayenne aroma in the air. For a moment, i thought the Swamp Shack ditched live music and brought in the C&W muzak. to my surprise, was Chris Hardy on the beach club stage putting out a new sound with his buddy, Larry Looper, and getting a compelling fiddle melody out of his six string, the likes i’ve never heard of before. that schoolnight evening, local families packed Crazy Alan’s patio with little kids galore learning to love texas gulf coast shrimp — the stuff that’s fresher and more flavorful than the farm raised imported stuff. Chris hardy is one of the best when it comes to dialing in the audience. his set this evening featured exclusively his originals complete with singer songwriter story telling - a great way to connect. Someday, i’d like to see hardy on an electric — i’m sure it’ll sizzle... Down the street, we checked into:

PArrOT HEAD iriSH BALLADS COuNTrY STYLE - For the first time, we got to catch live music from Frank Martin Gilligan and Joe Gavido on T-Bone Tom’s landshark stage. gilligan is a parrot head favorite that doesn’t play Buffet. go figure… With ancestry reaching back 4 generations to ireland, gilligan comes to the texas gulf Coast after a stop in New York. gilligan presented, in true irish form, ballads of real world working people, of giving up sons and daughters to the new world and an occasional splash of yodel. good stuff for the soul! While playing throughout the greater houston metroplex, you’ll only catch gilligan and gavido locally at tBone’s — remember that! - Continued on Page 35

Loose Notes

WOW! WAS MArCH A BLAST!!! Awesome weather, spring break, march madness, houston rodeo, baseball opening day, crawfish, easter family fun, spring cleaning, and lots of great live music! there was waaaay too much for us to cover entirely and based on our samplings, march had to have been a fabulous month for many. let’s run down some of what went down…

by Andy Eng

rODEO HOuSTON We scored a last minute ride with the local Houston Livestock rodeo bunch on one of their ten party busses for this year’s Keith urban show. What a hoot! it’s about time i got to see a Keith Urban show as he’s played at seven of these events to date. hailing from New zealand, Australia via tennessee, Urban is a country, country rock, rock, pop-rock performer with a large appeal sweet spot. in my opinion, on this night, he was a tad right of center appealing well to the audience. it’s evident Urban enjoys playing his guitar as much as he enjoys singing and connects with arena audience with a direct eye contact approach much like Willie Nelson but with a smoothness of Jackson Browne. this year, the reports were local fundraising efforts exceeded $1 million and doing the math for all the scholarships given, this calculates one big fundraising operation. thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors who helped make this year’s event a winner! - Continued on Page 36

Texas Beer Enthusiast On Demand CO2 Delivery

Meet the Brewer: DONAVAN HOWARD from Beerfoot Brewery

Favorite Texas brewed beer? Definitely a tough one with all of the great beer being brewed in Texas now. Since I’m a huge fan of a good session beer and I feel I should put something I would drink more than one of…. I will have to go with the Saint Arnold Pub Crawl or Oasis Meta Modern. I know I can’t decide on just one.

Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? Again this is tough, I will go with 2 beers again… one crushable and one not so crushable. Atticus Atlas from Parish Brewing Co or a Paulaner Pilsner. Did I mention I’m a fan of a good German beer too?

Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? I enjoy more pale beers than dark so I would say a beer with wheat and hops mostly. So along the lines of a hazy Pale Ale or Session IPA.

What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? Definitely the session styles. English Mild, Witbier, Cream Ale and German Lagers are some of my favorite. Most local enthusiast is chasing the newest release and value good beer more by how hard it is to find.

Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? I would absolutely one to travel to Europe and try the styles of each individual city and the pubs there. Scotland, Ireland, England and Germany are all on my bucket list. Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? Not really a beer setting, but a Metallica Concert where I did enjoy an Irish Red Ale, IPA, and Blonde Ale would have to be my favorite. Also the Lunar Rendezbrew, our local homebrew club’s annual beer festival is a ton of fun.

Palapa Bar Celebrating 15 Years of Partying on the Patio All April, stop in for a blast from the past - special guest bartenders from the last 15 years By Shawn Domingues

located on the corner of 6th Street and Kipp Avenue, just off the beaten path of the busy Kemah Boardwalk, the palapa Bar boasts of being the original bar on the block, so to speak, and the first to offer a large palapa-covered patio in the area.

“there are a lot of bars and restaurants in the area with palapas now – imitation is the best form of flattery,” said owner greg Boaz, “but most of the patios are an afterthought, or an additional area for seating when weather permits… but we have always been a patio bar, first and foremost.” With heaters blazing during the cold winter month, rain or shine, the party is on the patio at the palapa Bar, but they also have a bar and dance floor located inside and a live DJ every Friday and Saturday night to keep the party going indoors as well, a combination that has proven to be successful in an industry sometimes known for shorter life spans. “We’ve always hired experienced bartenders, and i give a lot of credit for our success to the various bartenders we’ve had over the past 15 years,” said Boaz. in honor of their anniversary, former bartenders will be making guest appearances all month long.

Although they offer drink specials every night of the week, the casual atmosphere of the palapa Bar appeals more to the locals Sunday through thursday, with the “weekenders” joining the party on Friday and Saturday nights. “Anyone that comes in a stranger leaves as a friend, sort of like Cheers where ‘everybody knows your name,’” said longtime customer Ashley Niederhofer.

everyone is always welcome, of course, especially on April 7 (6 p.m. to 2 a.m.) when the palapa Bar hosts their 15th Anniversary Party. there will be raffle prizes up for grabs, $5 Quinceañera shots and $5 drink specials all night. Stop by, show your support, and tell them the SCeNe sent you.

LOCAL MUSIC

Local Music Spotlight:

GRIFTERS & SHILLS  By Sarah Piña

A little over ten years ago, two musicians with vastly different influences crossed paths; John Stoll brought more of the hard rock and metal, while rebecca Stoll delivered her trademark east texas vibe through her music and vocals. And though the musical stylings seemed an unlikely pair, the connection was instant.

The Slags

“We ended up meeting in a bluesy jam band, and there was just an instant chemistry, on every level,” said rebecca. “Not too long afterwards, we began writing our songs and performing as a duo,” she recalled.

Thursday, April 19 T-BONE TOM’S

ever since, the two-piece band and now married couple known as grifters & Shills (“throwback, antiquated terms for swindlers,” rebecca laughed) have become a staple on the local Bay Area music scene with a style of music— ranging from Americana to rock, and bluegrass to ragtime— which is almost indescribable.

“We just have so many influences,” said John. “it’s so hard to name a genre for it, especially with rebecca’s vocals and our use of so many different instruments. She’ll play everything from the bass to ukulele, and many times besides my guitar, i'll play percussion with my feet. that’s partly musical, and partly i think because sometimes i can’t sit still!” he joked.

JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE

this genre-defying sound of the selfdescribed “two-person, dozen-instrument act” has continued to garner a great following in the Bay Area, with fan favorites such as “Keepin’ Score” and “Disappear.”

“there are certain songs where rebecca even plays the kazoo, and the crowd just loves those!” said John.

With such unique musical qualities, it may be no surprise then that to date the duo have also released several albums of their own.

“our latest album to be released this summer is entitled long tongue liars, and we’re very excited about that one. it’s definitely more blues-influenced,” John said. Apart from their own projects, grifters & Shills have also been featured on albums from other popular texas artists such as zach tate and myrna Sanders, as well as numerous compilation albums. Additionally, they regularly play not only the Bay Area and also perform throughout the country.

“We love playing venues like the Boldthouse, t-Bone tom’s, and Chelsea Wine Bar, and we’re also fortunate that at least once a year we play nationally,” rebecca said, noting that they’ve performed everywhere from pennsylvania to Colorado. - Continued on Page 32

the texas reggae music scene is one that has grown greatly in recent years, particularly in the Bay Area. however, until now it has not seen anything like the group known as UPCOMING LOCAL SHOW DATES King Baby Familia. With its members hailing from around the globe, and Wednesday, April 25 • 6pm ......................Scout Bar each one bringing with them their Saturday, May 5 • 9pm....Stuttgarden on the Strand own musical influences, the truly diverse band has established a following in a relatively short amount of time.

the current lineup includes Diego Abu-pain (vocals), mohammed Diab (guitar), robert Andrews (bass guitar), Frank Algae (drums), as well as phil ocifer (keyboards) and Daniel Salazar (guitar), who are also known as part of local reggae favorites the philosophers. together, their journey began only in the past couple of years.

“i had been involved with hip-hop for quite some time—i am more of a hip-hop artist, and along the way, we just all ended up crossing paths and jamming. We just really clicked, and started getting a lot of local gigs that drew diverse crowds,” Abu-pain said. “i think that has a lot to do with the fact that we ourselves are a diverse band—our drummer is from germany, our bass player is from Corpus Christi, and mohammed (guitar) is from egypt. i didn’t even know they sung reggae in Arabic until i met him!” he said. And this international fusion that the band brings together musically initially can stun audiences. “Anytime a crowd sees us for the first time, they don’t really know what to make of us. We are not traditional reggae artists in any sense, and our sound is definitely an alternative, hip-hip/rock and reggae fusion. But that’s part of our mission, to do something different, and put an original sound out there that really stands out. We make sure we don’t sound like anyone else,” Abu-pain said.
