‘Party on the Patio’ Season is Here

& CABO’s Beach Bar is Now Open!

By shawn domingues

With the unpredictable weather of april finally behind us, spring is in full swing, and it’s time for parties on the patio. Springtime is an awakening – a time for re-birth, renewal and re-growth – the perfect metaphor for the metamorphosis taking place at Cabo on Clear Lake. Recently, Chef ernie garza was brought onboard as the new general manager, bringing his culinary expertise with him. a local native, garza went to culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu in orlando, where he lived for 10 years working as a chef at some of the finest restaurants and venues orlando had to offer. Coming back to his roots, garza moved back to texas and opened the tasting Room Wine Bar in Kingwood before migrating further south, to Clear Lake where garza has worked at the hilton, Number 13 in galveston and Skallywag as head chef.

Food is his passion and garza plans to add new menu items in the future; in the meantime, he will be featuring various Chef’s Specials, including the specialty burgers he will be creating for the Wednesday night burger promotion each week – Cabo Burgers are $5 every Wednesday night, and for just a little more mullah, guests can indulge their culinary cravings with one of garza’s gourmet burgers like the BBQ Burger (made with a short rib, brisket, chuck blend patty and topped with a few onion rings and homemade BBQ sauce), or the Mexican Burger (made with a chorizo and chuck blend patty with roasted green chili and garlic aioli, black bean purée, and pepper jack cheese). there are menu specials throughout the week, with 50¢ Wings on Mondays, $3 tacos on tuesdays (Friday and Saturday nights, they cook the tacos on the patio from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.) thursday night is the ever-popular Steak Night, starting at 5 p.m., but don’t let the name fool you, this special night isn’t just about steaks. the special Steak Night menu offers Shrimp Scampi, tempura Chicken, tuna Steak and ahi Ceviche Fresco, as well as the Ribeye, Stuffed Filet, and Surf and turf – each entrée comes with a choice of two sides. Cabo’s award-winning crawfish chef (two years in a row at the Big ass Crawfish Bash) Sean Parish is boiling up crawfish three days a week. Monday and Wednesday crawfish are $5.99 per pound, and the pots are boiling from 5 to 10 p.m. on Sundays, starting at noon, all-you-can-eat crawfish is $30 (includes corn, potatoes and sausage) with DJ Bryan Rhymes spinning and drink specials all day ($2 Pabst Blue Ribbon, $3 bloody Marys and mimosas, and $4 gatorade shots), Cabo is striving to put the FUNday back in Sunday.

garza plans to carry on with the “always something fun going on” philosophy that Cabo is known for. there are drink specials every day, DJ Khaos spinning on the weekends, and live music up to six times a week. Plus, take your competitive spirit out to Cabo on Wednesdays when they have the geeks who Drink trivia game going on, or on Mondays when Cabo hosts a winner-takes-all pingpong tournament. - Continued on Page 45

Rock Supergroup SONS OF APOLLO Descends on Scout Bar • Wednesday, May 9 By sarah Piña

Metalachi

Friday, May 11 SCOUT BAR

Fidelity Maxx Friday, May 11

JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE

get ready, Clear Lake! Rock supergroup Sons of apollo are set to perform for the first time at Scout Bar in May, and this is a show not to be missed.

the group, aptly named after apollo, the ancient greek and Roman god of music and poetry, is comprised of members who all come from impressive rock backgrounds that reads like a virtual “who’s who” of rock superstars. the current lineup includes lead vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (trans-Siberian orchestra, talisman, and formerly of Journey, yngwie Malmsteen, and axel Rudi Pell); guitarist and backing vocalist Ron "Bumblefoot" thal (art of anarchy, and formerly guns N' Roses); bassist Billy Sheehan (the Winery Dogs, Mr. Big, and formerly with David Lee Roth); drummer and backing vocalist Mike Portnoy (the Winery Dogs, transatlantic, Flying Colors, Neal Morse Band, and formerly of Dream theater, adrenaline Mob, and avenged Sevenfold); and iconic keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Black Country Communion, and formerly of Dream theater, alice Cooper, Platypus, yngwie Malmsteen, and Kiss). “We’ve all intersected musically over the years,” said Sherinian of the formation of Sons of apollo. “after our time in Dream theater, Mike and i reunited as an all-instrumental touring band with Billy Sheehan. We always wanted to do something like that again, and this past year it was just the right time to come together as an original band.” this timing resulted in their debut album Psychotic Symphony, which was written in ten days and released this past Fall.

“We started writing in March 2016, so by the time we got into the studio a year later we had a lot of starting points to work with. the title of the album is exactly what it is. it sounds like a psychotic symphony—there are a lot of classic, hard rock, fusion elements, and ultimately, we made a really nice mix,” said Sherinian, who co-produced the album with Portnoy. Much of this original sound can also be attributed to the level of musicianship within the band.

Lies of an Alibi Create a “Buzz” and Release Debut Album By sarah Piña

ever since heavy modern rock group Lies of an alibi (Loaa) stepped onto the houston music scene two years ago, they’ve created quite a buzz—literally, even in the past couple of months.

SCeNe readers may recall a music spotlight on the band when they first emerged— not just with dynamic shows, but a music video for their debut single “Freak Like Me” already in the works which now has over 10k views. as Loaa prepared to play with the hunger during Labor Day Weekend 2016 at Scout Bar, owner thomas Wilson and member of the hunger seemed to even foreshadow what was to come, stating at that time: “they’re going to pull their weight and then some.”

The Spazmatics Friday, May 18 SCOUT BAR

Fast-forward two years later, and Loaa’s music was recently featured on houston’s rock station 94.5 the Buzz over the course of several weeks.

“to hear your music on the radio, it never gets old. you get butterflies still. it’s always fun to hear it come on there,” said lead vocalist Jacob, who along with antho (guitar), Will (drums), alex (bass) and Jay (guitar/vocals) are the current lineup of Loaa. Loaa has also since played at venues beyond the Clear Lake area with national acts.

“We’ve been fortunate to also play at White oak Music hall with Puddle of Mud, and Red Sun Rising at the house of Blues. that was a fun show. everyone has been really supportive of us,” Jacob said. “We would also like to thank esoterick guitars, Virus Vodka, all the support we have gotten these last two years from family and friends,” lead guitarist antho added.

additionally, as of press time, the band just celebrated the release of their first self-titled album at Scout Bar on april 28, which is now available on itunes, Spotify, googlePlay, and various other major digital platforms, with physical copies available at all Loaa shows.

“the album is one we have been working on slowly, as we have been busy picking up as many shows as we can get. But it’s done, and the songs are all so different from each other. they are really free-flowing free-stylish songs,” Jacob said, adding that one song in particular is one that hits close to home.

“Ultimately we added a newer song to the CD called ‘Beyond the Clouds.’ it’s a very personal song about my baby brother who died of leukemia after battling it for four years when he was 12, and it’s dedicated to him,” he said. So what’s next for Loaa? “We’re looking to possibly do a couple of acoustic tracks, especially because of ‘Beyond the Clouds,’ which i think would make a great acoustic track as well. We’re also looking to do more touring this year and go into fullon marketing mode, and release a new video every couple of months, too,” he said. “Now is the start of everything in my eyes. this is where we really begin.”

During May, the band will be performing at shows beyond Clear Lake and throughout texas, though they regularly play local venues such as Scout Bar as well and currently fans can enjoy their debut album on a variety of digital platforms. Make sure to “like” Lies of an alibi on Facebook as the concerts update often—and when you go, make sure to tell them the SCeNe sent you!

the tournament starts at 8 p.m. with a $10 entry fee, and the house will match the pot. another popular promotion, “after Work on the Lake,” also known as aWoL, is Cabo’s happy hour on Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. with $2 well drinks and domestic longnecks. With all the fun promotions and drink specials, the giant Connect Four and Jenga games on the upstairs patio, and ping-pong table inside, opportunities abound for good times to be had by all. garza says the overall concept of Cabo will remain the same, but there are some changes on the horizon. there’s a revitalized live music lineup starting in May and new entertainment such as DJ Bryan Rhymes, who will be spinning on Sundays. a palapa is planned for the massive deck upstairs as well as other cosmetic improvements inside. the Beach Bar (downstairs) will be getting new bar tops and garza is planning to have new docks built that will include larger boat slips to accommodate yachts, sailboats and cigarette boats larger than 30 feet.

at the open-air Beach Bar downstairs, guests can get “up close and personal” with the water on Clear Lake, and they can arrive by car or boat. Right on the water, the large wooden swings and casual atmosphere of the Beach Bar provide a great place to chillax with friends and enjoy the view. With live music every Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m., the fun starts early, and boaters needing to give their sea legs a break, can enjoy the party on the shore for a while. When the texas outlaw Challenge returns to Clear Lake in June, Cabo will be hosting the official bikini contest for the third consecutive year, and big plans are being made for Fourth of July festivities. Suffice it to say, the future is looking bright for Cabo on Clear Lake.

Sons of Apollo: Continued From Page 47

“every player is a virtuoso in their own right and has their own signature sound and style – it’s unlike anything that’s out there. the talent level is just incredible,” said Sherinian.

additionally, unlike other groups carrying the supergroup label, Sherinian insists this is not just a side-project for the band.

“i’ve been fortunate to play with and produce some of my biggest musical heroes like Steve Vai, alice Cooper, and Kiss. Playing with Van halen in 2006 was incredible, too. But Sons of apollo is a full-on deal. We are in this for the long haul. We already have a second and third record in the works. We never stop writing,” he said.

Currently, the band has been on their first tour in South america and the United States, and looks forward to performing in houston. “it’s always exciting to take music you started writing in your studio, watch it bloom, and then take it the people. i love playing in houston and texas in general. always good to get that barbecue, too,” Sherinian laughed. So what can audiences expect when Sons of apollo hits Clear Lake in May?

“We are excited to come see you in houston! expect to get dazzled with kick-ass songs, great talent and a great show. We have a lot of killer surprises in store, too!”

Sons of apollo will perform at Scout Bar on Wednesday, May 9 with Venezuelan virtuoso electric guitarist Felix Martin. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show begins at 8 p.m. grab your tickets early, and when you go—make sure to tell them the SCeNe sent you!

Toast Small & Independent Brewers During 2018 American Craft Beer Week • May 14-20

WHAT: For the 13th consecutive year, the Brewers Association has declared American Craft Beer Week (ACBW), a nationwide celebration of the small and independent craft brewers that make America’s beer culture so exceptional. The week long celebration provides a platform for craft brewers and beer lovers to celebrate craft beer. From May 14-20, brewers across all 50 states will hold events including exclusive brewery tours, special craft beer releases, food and beer pairings, tap takeovers and more. WHEN: Monday, May 14–Sunday, May 20, 2018

Quick Hits on U.S. Craft Beer

Brewery Count: There are 6,300 breweries in the U.S. Almost all (98%) are small and independent craft brewers.

Continued Growth for the Segment: In 2017, small and independent craft brewers grew by 5 percent, reflecting the dynamism and a bright spot for the domestic beer market.

Beer Styles / Never Go Out of Styles: IPAs continue to hop up, now accounting for roughly onequarter of craft volume. Of particular interest here in Houston is the New England IPA (NEIPA). More sessionable styles, including golden ales, pilseners and pale lagers, are up 33 percent, totaling nearly five percent of craft. Beer Pairings/Perfect Pair: 73% of craft beer purchasers gave “complements my meal”as a very or somewhat important selection criteria in their beer choice when dining out. Check out the CraftBeer.com Beer & Food Course (there’s a professional chef and enthusiast version) to learn more about the power of beer and food.

WHERE: North to South. East to West. Sea to Shining Sea. Visit the official American Craft Beer Week event calendar on CraftBeer.com for a full – and growing – list of local celebrations in all 50 states.

WHY: ACBW provides hundreds of thousands of beer lovers the opportunity to visit and support their local brewery and beer businesses. It’s the perfect time to recognize the ingenuity of the small and independent craft breweries that have made America’s beer culture the richest in the world.

Loose Notes March Madness extended into April this year - We had april Fools, a Friday the 13th, a blue moon, goofy weekend weather, and yet throughout we enjoyed super outstanding live music with many of you. Starting off the month was….

by Andy Eng

The COLdesT dAY OF APRiL - took us by surprise at this year’s Kemah Crawfish Festival. thank goodness for plenty of hot crawfish and live music! i’ve been following this gathering over the years and gotta say that the current event organizer. the crew at gulf Coast Festivals are definitely the right people to run this event. their team has revamped everything about the event from seating, vendors, food services and live music entertainment bringing in what the attendance wanted - plenty of fresh hot crawfish and quality entertainment. this year, i missed out seeing the Pee Wee Bowen band headline the Friday night stage - i’m sure it was a dandy. on Saturday, a blustery northern wind came through the neighborhood, yet from what i could tell, did not bother those who came out one iota. a huge shout out to the Clear Creek JRotC for keeping the grounds spotless and the picnic area spic and span - clearly well looked after. the single serving line approach used by the original event organizers has been replaced with a three lanes of buying and five lanes of serving that reduced the waiting to civilized levels. For those adverse to mudbugs, the food vendor line was top quality this year. the live music? We started off catching the Bobby D Sawyer Band getting things going. Bobby was perfect in the opening role putting patrons into the right festival frame of mind. Jarrod Sterrett and the hired guns from Conroe held down the middle frames. this is the second year i’ve caught this band at this festival and it seemed like they suited fans fine.

the headliner i really wanted to check out was Wayne toups. the first time i caught Wayne was at a rained out League City Music Fair back when it was a blues music event. the show was saved by moving everything indoors where toups saved the festival unleashing a searing sizzling zydeco that had the fans forget they were soaked to the bone. Chatting with toups backstage and recalling that event, i asked his approach for this blustery evening as his fans streamed in through the gate. he simply smiled and called his band together for a last minute pre-show meeting. once the show got going and much to my amazement, this grammy award winner demonstrated his primary forte as an entertainer that just happened to use music, as he and the band warmed up the crowd with a comforting show of rock and R&B covers which to me, was exactly what his people were craving for. go figure… the only other musician i know of that good at reading an audience is Chris hardy. i’m going to need to see Wayne toups again. We’ll see you there too!

AN ePiCuReAN eVeNiNG - it was indeed as this dandy annual event moved into april. there were several new booths this year to go along with the lineup of veteran eateries, many you’ll be able to find listed here in the SCeNe. the food was fantastic and plentiful this year as person after person i spoke with claimed being filled with so many more booths left to visit. i’m not sure how to top off this culinary event of the year, possibly donating what’s left at the end of the evening to local charity. one thing clearly over the top was the servings of live music - clearly the best in my recollection with four local live music forces making their debut appearances at the epicurean evening. if that doesn’t make a statement about supporting local live music, i’m not sure what does.

our first surprise was catching obsolete august at the Sam’s Boat corner. over the years, i’ve grown accustomed to the duet of Kevin and Danny at the likes of the Sherlock’s/Cabo circuit and now can put them on the good to go list for black tie private parties…. Book ‘em! the Big Jordan Band with Jordan and Richard Rose serving the music where the two halls came together at the Crazy alan’s Swamp Shack booth - this notoriously loud spot in the Space Center cavern was no problem for Jordan and Richard, cleanly cutting through the din. We had a pleasant reunion with Cecil Shaw and his band, a long time local music favorite and this evening, whipping up the frenzy at the Marais booth - i believe they’re the first i’ve ever seen getting people to dance at this event where the food reigns. geoff Fish is a local musician i first crossed paths with at the Kemah Jam, nailed it by outlasting the dining frenzy and with the chatter subsided, dialed in the eQ and reverb perfectly playing his sound off the walls inside the huge Space Center. it wasn’t cranked loud but you could hear geoff and his guitar perfectly throughout the entire main hall which to me was sonic brilliance. Well done to all the local live musicians for making a great musical debut, thanks to all the fantastic fine eateries for feeding the masses. this year’s epicurean evening was a perfect over the top event. Cheers!!!

CRiTiCAL LisTeNiNG - With the weather being goofy in april,we backed away from the outdoor frolicking and sat ourselves down to partake of some exceptionally good music which included the Dylan Bishop Band at Katie’s and at t-Bone tom’s where we caught the Van Wilks and ezra Charles shows.

the first time we caught Bishop, was an impressive treat and a follow up was clearly in order. as we’ve mentioned before, Katie’s often teams with the Blues hound, Jim Nagle, bringing in blues talent from outside the area. according to Katie’s Bob emmons, Dylan is “one well schooled talent and only 19 years old.” throughout the entire evening, he played without the use of pedals plugging his Stratocaster straight into his Super Deluxe Reverb, played exclusively on the bridge, and produced unique sounding riffs in a jazzy sort of way where every note was unique -- as if he was riding a skateboard through the hill Country, in 12 bar 8 beat blues, passage after another. one interesting treat from Bishop was when he set his Strat to a Drop D. instead of playing the entire guitar as i expected with the lower tuning, he played his single guitar as if it were two different instruments - one low and one high in a call & response frenzy. Now “that” was slick…. take a guest and catch Dylan Bishop at Katie’s the next time he’s in town. For that matter, take your guest to see any show at Katie’s for an evening of exceptional talent. We did a follow up in april catching Van Wilks, an atX musician who in my opinion, has successfully fused a number of musical styles indigenous to austin, into a singular sonic presentation that i’ve never heard anybody else pull off - think zz tops, SRV, the Fabulous thunderbirds all into one. there were at times, i swore i heard Wilks voicing through two amps at the same time either one of which would have been good, yet unique and tasty both together. Credit galen Mendlenka for bringing Van into t-Bones - galen seems to be serial when it comes introducing good live music to the masses. Put Van Wilk on your watch list, come check out one of his shows and plan to stay the evening. you’ll be joining a growing following of critical music listeners which is never a bad thing. - Continued on Page 31

Back on the beat is ezra Charles who semi retired from the big band scene and now plays with his son Jake on the kit, at his history of the Boogie Woogie show that you can catch in the downtown theater District - Without his big band, it’s just ezra and Jake. andy Upchurch told me “always keep an eye out for the two piece groups - they’ve got to be strong as they’ve nothing to hide behind.” Folks, this is a musical treat i can highly recommend at t-Bone tom’s each Saturday from noon to 3pm. ezra tells me we can credit (King) Barry for bringing this show to the local stage here in Kemah. thanks!!!

NeW sTRiNGs - guitarist know that a new set of strings is necessary every once in a while else the sound grows old. in april, we caught the Fab 5 at Jackie’s Brickhouse along with their new member, Danny Kristensen in the role of george. in the words of the new owners at the Brickhouse, it’s a good to sometimes “Mix things up,” which is what the fans got to enjoy that evening -- the results were bright, fresh, and enjoyable for all. Mike Colby and the folks at Sound Sound has been continually upgrading their sound rigs and that evening, had the place sounding like a huge concert arena which is always a treat. and the new look wasn’t just with the music as Jackie’s Brickhouse is undergoing a refresh of its own - i guess my take away from that evening is that it’s okay to every so often change your strings...

TOuR sTOP CLeAR LAKe the last time they came through town was 10 years ago. sponge, a band from the ‘90s stopped in for a show at Scout Bar and their fans couldn’t have been happier. this band hails from Detroit, a region that’s given us Bob Seger, glen Frey, and the Detroit Pistons. i got lots of insight on this band from Shawn Pritchard who came so close to getting called on stage by Vinnie Dombroski. the rest of the band - tim Patalan, Billy adams, Kyle Neely and andy Patalan (bass, drums, guitar & guitar) provided a sonic pureness which i wish all garage bands would strive for. the sound had a musical integrity akin to what we get out of the Beaumont/gulfcoast Region, albeit with a Detroit twist influenced with the likes of David Bowie, the Psychedelic Furs, and iggy Pop. the takeaway lesson from Vinnie that evening was that when we go to church, the white choirs emphasize the one and the three where the black choirs hit on the two and the four. and if you want to groove with Sponge, they’re on the two and four. get that people? as for what’s new, some kind of remodelling is happening at Scout Bar - Not exactly sure yet and to be continued...

GALVesTON COuNTY FAiR & ROdeO - this event has been running for 83 years and in april, i had the fortune of going for the first time. the participants at the galveston Rodeo are your local FFa & 4h teams competing from Dickinson, Sante Fe, alvin, and all the nearby towns which qualifies this event as part of our SCeNe. headlining the live music show were the Bellamy Brothers, a country band that flourished on the ‘70s La pop rock scene. i’m convinced this band, much like toups mentioned earlier, can play all genres of music as needed - With the 10:30 pm show start, this particular evening, it seemed to me that they had an aire of Buffett.

iT’s A WRAP - When you read this, i hope we’ll find our hometown pro basketball team playing well in the playoffs and our baseball team tearing things up in the league. We’ve enjoyed catching up with many of you in april and look forward to more of the same in May. School will be out for the summer soon - Do yourself a favor, get your chores out of the way and get out and enjoy our best time of year! See you out there!

Soar with the Future of Flight at Space Center Houston’s New Exhibit: Above and Beyond

Space Center houston newest exhibit above and Beyond gives guests a high-flying experience into the future of aerospace technology.

“earn your wings and discover the innovations that bring flight to life,” said the center’s President and Ceo William t. harris. “Become a part of the future of flight and pilot your own mission in an immersive aerospace experience.” above and Beyond, presented by Boeing and made possible locally by Coca-Cola, explores the advances in aviation and aerospace and the technologies that result when flight and innovation unite.

inside above and Beyond, guests will be welcomed by a wraparound theater that highlights the epic quest to challenge the limits of flight. Stories from past and present aerospace pioneers set the stage for the exhibition’s hands-on, interactive experiences.

a space elevator simulation will take guests to the edge of the universe. they can design and test a supersonic fighter jet to face off in a virtual high-speed flying competition. a flying simulation with motion-sensing technology gives a sense of what it’s like to fly like a bird, all while exploring the forces of flight.

“Sparking an interest in the wonder of aerospace at an early age is a priority for Boeing,” said greg hyslop, Boeing chief technology officer. “above and Beyond provides future engineers, pilots or astronauts with an interactive glimpse into how they can achieve their dreams and inspire them to pursue careers in science and technology.”

above and Beyond is produced by evergreen exhibitions in association with Boeing, in collaboration with NaSa and the Smithsonian’s National air and Space Museum. tickets are available online at spacecenter.org or at the door. Become a member and come back free as often as you like for one year, plus get free parking after the first visit.

RAW TALENT

Featured Artist: CATHERINE STROUD

“i generally start with some kind of line and fill in the line,” said artist Catherine Stroud.

though her lines don’t follow a ruler’s edge, they are organic and unrefined. Stroud told impressionist art and german expressionism inspire her as well as color, lines, and contours. her paintings embody her inspirations depicting her impressions rather than an exact replica. Stroud’s pieces seem almost gnarled images evoking awareness and deep contemplation. her colors call out like sirens in the sea; alluring and tempting.

By Kelley dawson

“i started [art] when i was young; just fiddling around. as i got older, as a shy kid, it gave me the most peace,” shared Stroud. She studied art throughout her school years and continues to learn and grow. She attended the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New york and from there went on to study abroad in Paris.

“During my studies, i was pushed into methods i didn’t like. i had a professor that made our class create entire scenes in 5 seconds. i was flabbergasted and horrified. i always took my time,” Stroud stated. She added, “i took many classes, and that’s all i do now. i look at something, and i create a gesture of it.” Stroud informed her art is an evolution. She explained, “i began as a fine artist; working with sharp pencils and taking time to draw as realistic as possible. and yes, i got to realism, but to me it doesn’t make sense anymore.” Stroud’s primary focus is “keeping it raw.” She said, “i like to see the mistakes we can’t create; the paint skips, different colors coming through, the little accidents that makes it so much stronger.” Stroud expressed her love of creating art. She revealed, “it’s a wordless language. So simple and pure in using color and light to communicate instead of words. anytime, in all situations [having] the successful transmission of feeling. it is amazing being able to share an experience or moment with someone.” Stroud lives in galveston. She has painted many murals throughout her home town. Stroud includes the community in her projects. her friends and fellow artists assisted with a mural in downtown galveston at 25th Street.

She also creates murals with SMaRt Family Literacy which allows children to participate. Stroud disclosed when she gets tired painting and spaces out in the canvas that she picks up her ukulele or guitar. She said, “the balance of the two has been wonderful. they complement each other.” Stroud is currently staying in a small village in France to market her art to european galleries. View additional Stroud works at J Bangle and From the heaRt galleries in galveston or visit www.catherinestroud.com. For contact, email at Stroud11@hotmail.com.

Antonini’s Subs & Steaks: From Page 10

antonini’s best-selling sandwich has always been the Cheese Steak (made with 100% USDa Certified top Round Sirloin, handcut in house, choice of grilled onions, cheese, ketchup, mayo, and antonini’s own blend of peppers), but running a close second is the italian sub (made with genoa salami, Capricola ham, cooked ham, peppered ham, choice of lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, antonini’s special blend of peppers, provolone cheese and italian seasoning). any sub can be turned into a salad or wrap for a little lighter lunch or for those folks with enough willpower to cut down on carbs.

the beer and liquor license is in its final stages of completion to meet the demand of the customer base found on Kemah’s 6th Street (not to be confused with the legendary street in austin), and keeping in step with the party atmosphere the Lighthouse District is known for. Until then, however, customers can enjoy the non-alcoholic beverages they have to offer. Stubborn Soda is a new “indie” type of brand that makes handcrafted sodas with unexpected flavor combinations like Black Cherry with tarragon, Lemon Berry acaî, agave Vanilla Cream Soda and orange hibiscus. Very selective about who they let carry their products, Stubborn Soda is a synergistic partner for antonini’s and their mantra aligns perfectly with the sub shop’s philosophy. Putting a positive spin on the word “stubborn”, the hip soda company explains why being stubborn can be a good thing, “to truly create something great, you’ve got to do it the ‘stubborn’ way. that means having a distinct point of view, never giving up and having unwavering determination to make something worthwhile… never compromising and using only quality ingredients and flavors.”

Nestled right next door and across the street from some Kemah’s current late night hot spots, antonini’s wall of windows lends itself to unintended entertainment. With the counter-style seating facing the street, guests can have a front row seat to the passersby along the always-busy 6th Street, and do some people watching while eating their meal. (Sort of like reality tV without the tV – because real reality can be very entertaining.) So, stop by and check out the new place, order a delicious sub, pop the top on a Stubborn Soda and be sure to tell them the SCeNe sent you!

Farley Girls

Galveston Island Eats: Part 1 By Lauren elizabeth Ware

Many people are familiar with the vast history of galveston island. What a lot of people tend to overlook are the plethora of restaurants offering quality food. i asked the general public on Facebook to provide their top choices to eat on the island and set out on a mission to visit the top ten in three days. i love food, and i love community. throughout my visits, each one of these restaurants delivered 100 percent on both of these qualities. in the famous words of Shaggy, “there’s nothing i love more than food, unless it’s more food.”

Don’t forget to save room for the popular chocolate creme, strawberry creme, and key lime pies! Porch Cafe

Charlie’s Burgers (1110 23rd st.): Since 1965, Charlie’s Burgers has been known for their handmade ingredients. Sit inside or relax on one of their picnic tables outside and chow down on their well-known beef tacos, hamburgers, and chicken salads. Don’t forget a side of fries or onion rings. shyKatz (1528 Avenue L.): Serving breakfast and lunch, ShyKatz is the spot to indulge in their savory Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. Antonini’s Subs & Steaks Opens Third

Location in Kemah By shawn domingues

there’s a new sub shop in town – new to Kemah, that is. Family-owned and operated, antonini’s Subs and Steaks has actually been in business for more than 33 years. in 1984, Mike antonini (Sr.) opened his first sub shop, which was originally located in Nassau Bay and relocated in 1991 to its current location in Webster (17314 hwy. 3 in the medical center area) offering east Coast-style subs for more than 17 years and counting. the second location in texas City (3509 Palmer hwy. in the Kroger shopping center) was opened in 2012 and quickly became a local favorite, gaining loyal customers who can’t get enough of Mike’s special Cheese Steaks. With the success of two locations, the natural progression of expansion has brought the family-owned chain to Kemah’s Lighthouse District (602 6th Street).

Mike antonini grew up on the east Coast where the quest for a perfect cheese steak is a normal part of everyday life. he went to college at St. edwards University in austin in the ’70s where he met his, now wife, teresa. after graduating, the couple moved back to the east Coast so Mike could carry on the family’s mushroom farming business. as the big corporate farms started taking over, family-owned farms like the antoninis’ found it difficult to survive and compete with the huge conglomerates that were squeezing the “little guys out.” While Mike struggled with the farming business, his college buddies were thriving back in austin, founding the thundercloud Subs chain that has been an austin mainstay and local favorite ever since. Mike even gave his buddies advice on how to make east-Coat inspired sandwiches. having grown up in houston, teresa was missing her friends and family in the Lone Star State, so they took a leap of faith and moved to the suburbs of houston to open their own deli-style restaurant. Mike’s Number 1 goal has always been to make the best sandwiches possible. the bread is baked fresh daily, the meats are all hand-cut in-house and only the freshest ingredients are used in order to achieve that goal. Mike’s renowned Cheese Steak has put an end to the quest, having accomplished what he (and most of antonini’s loyal customers) believes to be perfection.

although Mike antonini was the founding force behind the success of this family-owned business, his son Michael has been influential with its expansion. Michael has helped take what his father created to the next level, using social media and his expansive knowledge of the restaurant business, having worked in the industry his whole life, or as Michael tells it, “Been working the business since i could barely see over the counter at my dad’s shop.” Michael operates the Kemah location with a very hands-on approach and is often found in the kitchen making the subs himself, ensuring they maintain the quality their fans have come to expect. he honors his father’s vision and shares his passion for perfection as well. Michael takes pride in the quality of ingredients they use for every sandwich and the fact that they slice the meats themselves.
