News & Notes: openings, Closings, relocations, Anniversaries & More

There is change in the air (as well as a ridiculous amount of pollen). Typically a Spring kind of thing, these changes are happening in the Clear Lake area in the hot summer month of June. Many local area restaurants and hot spots are celebrating anniversaries, experiencing new beginnings, or closing their doors forever. Skallywag Suds & Grub (Kemah) is commemorating their 5-year anniversary with a weekend bash from June 15 to 17 with DJ and live music, food and drink specials and other promos.

Scotty’s Pub on the Bay (Kemah) is celebrating their second anniversary on June 30 with live music, a DJ, giveaways, food and drink specials.

Boondoggles (El Lago) is kicking off their 20th Anniversary celebration in June also; offering 20 days of specials, including 1998 happy hour prices and hosting a community celebration Saturday, June 30.

CoCo Crepes, Waffles & Coffee

2471 Gulf Freeway League City, TX As we were going to press, Outriggers was welcoming friends for their final days on the Seabrook waterfront under the Kemah Bridge. They were forced to close their doors and vacate their location due to the Highway 146 expansion. “It’s the end of an era,” said owner John Schafer. “[We] tried to stay open as long as possible. [We] will not make it to June 2nd. The State is not granting an extension.”

They plan to build a new Outriggers restaurant (4321 NASA Pkwy. in El Lago). They expect to be open before summer 2019.

Tookie’s Burgers (Kemah) has their patio project in forward motion. The patio will be facing the marina for impressive waterfront and firework views.

Another casualty of the 146 expansion, local favorite donald’s donuts (Seabrook) was forced to close their doors May 30; plans are currently in place for a new location to be opened in Seabrook once construction for a new shopping center between Red Bluff and Repsdorph is completed. They ask that you visit one of their other locations (League City, La Porte or Deer Park) in the interim.

Merlion, dubbed Seabrook’s “hidden gem” is not hidden any more with their move to a much larger location, a freestanding turquoise building on Main Street in Seabrook. The new spot opened on May 23.

The SCENE happens to know the skinny on what is planned for the now former Merlion location. It is currently on the down-low, but stay tuned. One hint: Craft Beer.

Also in Seabrook, the impressive piece of real estate once home to Bailey’s American Grille and Blue Palms location has been purchased. More information coming soon.

Marais (Dickinson) is now offering live music at 7 p.m. Saturday nights at the Plank Bar (downstairs on the water).

Opus Bistro (Clear Lake Shores) had to close their doors after Hurricane Harvey came rushing in, leaving a path of devastation and destruction behind, but the building is currently undergoing renovations. We have been keeping the details of the venue’s future plans “close to the cuff” and “hush-hush.” But the City of Clear Lake Shores, obviously excited, recently broke the news that

Outriggers partner John Schafer has signed a lease for the property at 1002 Aspen and plans to open O2 Bistro in “late June.” So between building the new Outriggers in El Lago and opening up O2 Bistro in Clear Lake Shores, Schafer has an exciting and dynamic year ahead of him. dan’s Pizza will be opening a second location called dan's Pizza Wings 'N' Beer deck in Kemah (800 Bradford Ave., formerly Hubcap Grill), sometime in August. Meanwhile, hubcap Grill set to open June 12 in Seabrook. They will be taking over the former Red door Cafe space at 1918 NASA Pkwy. Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there! Be sure to flip through the SCENE for some great suggestions for Father’s Day gifts and stops to include during the celebration of that amazing dad in your life.

WE ARE INTERVIEWING! Media Company/Creative Agency/Digital Shop is expanding and looking for the right person to join our team in sales. BIGGEST PERFORMANCE BOAT EVENT IN TEXAS RETURNS

TExAS ouTLAW ChALLENGE: June 20 - 24

NEW iN 2018: ioGP

formula 1 ChampBoat racing Series

Despite already gaining the reputation as the top annual highperformance boat event in Texas and one of the most respected in North America, the Texas Outlaw Challenge continues to grow, expand and evolve every year. And just when one wondered how the event could not get any bigger, better or more dynamic, event founder Paul Robinson proves his team is up for the challenge.

Last year’s 10th Texas Outlaw Challenge added multiple public and VIP events to the schedule and moved the popular National Shootout Championship from the open waters of Galveston Bay to the protected and viewing friendly waters of Clear Lake. This eliminated the need for a ride out into the bay to watch some of the most dynamic action of the event as spectators were able to watch from the shores of Clear Lake, a huge development in 2017.

But the 11th annual event (June 20-24) will again “up the ante” by hosting the season opening event of the international Outboard Grand Prix Formula One boat racing circuit. At first glance, the appearance of these Formula One boats might remind some local boating enthusiasts of the larger international hydroplane racing that visited Clear Lake in the early 1980s. But these smaller F1 ChampBoats (1,150 pounds, or a sixth of a standard hydroplane) offer an even more entertaining form of racing. While the bigger boats can exceed 200 mph, F1 ChampBoats can still reach speeds exceeding 130 mph thanks to modified engines that produce up to 400 horsepower. But racers and circuit officials will tell you it’s not the speed that makes their version of powerboat racing exciting. The boat’s design might be similar to IndyCar, but there are aspects of other forms of racing, including stock car, motocross and even airplane racing incorporated as well. The start includes a race off the

What is not new in 2018 is the huge impact the Texas Outlaw Challenge makes locally, both in terms of economic impact and supporting local charities. The event has donated more than $100,000 since 2008 including $50,000 donated to Harvey Relief through generous event participant and sponsor donations. These proceeds have helped the following local charities: Shriners Children’s Hospital, The Bridge Women’s Shelter, Boys & Girls Harbor, Clear Creek Environmental Foundation, Kemah Lions Club, Seabrook Rotary, Seabrook Marine Group, Galveston-Houston Families Exploring Down Syndrome, and various Veterans groups. The event also has a substantial economic impact that is estimated at well over $1 million each year with a more significant impact anticipated in 2018 with the added attractions of Formula 1 racing and expanded public events.

dock as drivers sprint for positioning as they reach the first turn. The boats turn on a dime, run 18 wide and fight for every inch and every corner. The boats will hit turns at upwards of 130 mph, make a sharp 90-degree turn in places, generate g-forces of up to five times standard gravity and decelerate to about 90 mph before resuming top speed in about 150 yards. And all this will be happening on Clear Lake thanks to the support of the same seven local cities (Seabrook, Nassau Bay, Kemah, El Lago, Pasadena, Clear Lake Shores, League City) and u.S. Coast Guard that allowed the National Shootout Championship to be moved into the lake last year. Check out the schedule on the opposite page and make your plan to catch both the Formula 1 ChampBoats and the National Shootout Championship on Clear Lake.

By Kelley dawson At the age of 16-years-old, Tassie Marceaux travelled to Europe with a group of students to study art and architecture. She told the trip lasted a few months and that she saw amazing places and art. “It started in my mind to do such a thing,” she revealed about creating art.

But, it wasn’t until Marceaux was in her 30s when she started painting. “I’d always done interior design for homes and businesses,” she said. Marceaux took lessons at Lamar university. She stated, “I had a number of wonderful teachers. I’ve been painting ever since.”

Marceaux painted pieces for clients and some art exhibits. She informed most of her paintings are Impressionism likely from her Europe trip.

“I don’t know why oils is the only medium I work with. I like the depth, consistency, and looseness of it,” shared Marceaux. What she likes about oils shows in each of her works. Her use of shadow and light provides intriguing depth and dimension. Marceaus’s exceptionally detailed brush strokes enhance her subjects’ character and bring them to life. Marceaux makes a challenging medium look easy. She admits, “I like all art even though I only do one style. Artists see something different in the same things; each creates a unique version.”

Marceaux’s interpretations of her subjects combined with uncommon substrates, such as window panes, produce remarkable paintings. She disclosed her window work has “taken off like crazy” due to recent showings at a coffeehouse in Kemah. “I shipped a window to Hawaii of all places,” declared Marceaux. She recalled antique shopping, “What could be done with these great old windows?” Marceaux later remembered a high school friend’s father who was an artist. She explained, “He made a screen out of old French doors and painted each window pane with a different scene.” Marceaux knew then what to do with the windows. She was decorating homes in Bolivar and wanted something different in those homes. “I painted the windows. They like it,” expressed Marceaux.

She definitely knows how to dress up an old window. Marceaux relayed most of her inspirations extend from travel and living on the bay in San Leon. She said, “I see coastal birds often. I also paint from photographs and recreate from them.” She disclosed, “When painting, I work through a lot of joy, loss, all sorts of feelings. I lose track of time. The only thing on my mind are colors and what I’m creating. It’s peaceful to me. A part of life my heart and soul go in each painting.” Marceaux stated, “We are our worst critics. When someone actually buys a painting, I’m still in utter shock sometimes. It’s a part of you.” She added, “A lot of artist are like that. It’s meaningful when someone likes your art so much they buy it. I feel honored and touched when someone buys a painting. It’s putting a piece of my heart in their home.”

View additional Marceaux paintings at www.facebook.com/La-Tasca-Design-215319471885296/. Her works are currently on display at Evelyn Meador Library in Seabrook through the end of June. To contact the artist, phone 409-656-1051 or email lmarceaux61@gmail.com.

Greater Tuna's Jaston Williams in "i'm Not Lying!" at The Grand 1894 Opera house

The truth will set you free. On occasion, it can also get you locked up. Join Jaston Williams as he shares pre-Tuna stories where you will meet the Alaskan cowboy who drove a hearse, have dinner served by the most nervous waiter in Texas and drop in on a Renaissance Fair held at a movie star’s house while dressed in a chicken suit. The title of the show says it all. “I’m Not Lying!” Just about everyone in Texas knows the name of Jaston Williams as one of the two men that brought Greater Tuna nationwide from Broadway to the White House and back to Texas. These stories and ones like these are what made Greater Tuna such a hit and Red, White and Tuna and Tuna Christmas and last year’s hit, A Wolverine Walks into a Bar. The humorous bits this screenwriter delivers will have the audience in side-splitting laughter. Jaston Williams is performing “I’m Not Lying” Saturday, June 23 at 2 and 8 p.m. at The Grand 1984 Opera House. Jaston performs annually at The Grand. The tickets range from $27-$72. For tickets, call 409-765-1894 or 1-800-821-1894 or buy on website, www.thegrand.com. The Grand 1894 Opera House is located at 2020 Postoffice St. in Galveston. Go see this performance: it’s hilarious, “I’m Not Lying.”

Let Dreams Take flight This Summer During Space Center houston’s Days of Elevation

Soar beyond boundaries this summer at Space Center Houston during Days of Elevation. As a leading science and space exploration learning center, Space Center Houston offers family fun, interactive educational activities and a launch pad for adventure. “If you’ve dreamed of flying, come get a bird’s-eye view of the future of flight in our new summer exhibit, blast off in a Mars simulator and camp out under the stars with us,” said William T. Harris, the nonprofit’s president and CEO. “Space Center Houston has something for everyone.”

Elevate your knowledge this summer by discovering concepts that bring the next frontier in space and aviation to life in the all-new exhibit Above and Beyond, presented by Boeing and made possible locally by Coca-Cola. It’s a hands-on experience about aerospace innovation with design challenges, simulations, interactive galleries and immersive videos. Soar like a bird, ride an elevator to outer space, design and fly a supersonic jet and more. Visitors will join the expedition through deep space in the Mission Mars interactive exhibit. Get up close to a real Orion engineering model and learn about the hardware that will get us to Mars. Feel how gravity on Earth compares to that of the red planet. Touch a Mars rock, launch a bottle rocket and step inside our Orion simulator to blast off on your own space exploration journey to the fourth planet in our solar system.

Space Center Houston is the home of the one-of-a-kind Independence Plaza where visitors get a stunning look at the Space Shuttle Program. Enter the high-fidelity shuttle replica Independence to get a feel for what it’s like to be an astronaut. Go inside NASA 905, the historic shuttle carrier aircraft that ferried all six of NASA’s shuttle orbiters. Walk the path of the Orbiter Access Arm, where astronauts made their final steps on Earth before entering the shuttle orbiter and launching into space. Elevate your visit with their special summer events. Become a scientist through engaging, hands-on space and science activities in our Pop-up Science Labs all summer long. Meet real American heroes and hear their first-hand space-exploration stories every Friday and Saturday at Lunch with an Astronaut. Spend a night at the museum and sleep under the wing of the original shuttle carrier aircraft during their Family Campout on June 23.

Save on admission with a CityPASS and explore Space Center Houston plus four other top attractions. Purchase a CityPASS in-person or online at spacecenter.org/citypass. Or, become a member and return free all year long. For more information, visit spacecenter.org.

Lakewood yacht Club hosts Prestigious 2018 Mallory Cup

Last month the Lakewood Yacht Club hosted the prestigious Mallory Cup for the High School Fleet Race Nationals, the premier event for High School Fleet Sailing in America. "Out of seven different districts across the country, the top 20 teams qualified for the event, earning their right to fight to become the National Champion," said LYC Coach Bernat Bali. Throughout two days of beautiful sailing conditions, teams had two sailors racing in each Fleet, Divisions A, and B, and their scores were combined to make the competition as global possible. After 17 races per division (34 races in total) and a great job by the local Race Committee, led by LYC member Dwight Bengtson, Point Loma, out of San Diego, claimed the overall win for the second year in a row. Christchurch High School, from Virginia, finished second, followed by Parker High School in third, also out of San Diego. The South East District of Interscholastic Sailing Association (SEISA) was represented by Clear Falls High School, where all the sailors are part of the Lakewood Sailing Program.

STOP ThE PRESS!!! - Readers are well aware of the upcoming Highway 146 expansion project and the imminent relocation of Outriggers. We got late word that Outriggers’ final Taco Tuesday night would also Southbound @ include the outriggers duo of Jimmy and Steve together once again as Southbound. This was a clear the calendar event, got lucky finding a parking spot, and joined the jammed packed house complete with a flock of Parrot Heads for this last of a lifetime event. We’ve missed Steve and Shirley since their move to Florida to be closer to kinfolk, yet the magic was as if it never left. Steve & Jimmy stirred up the frenzy as they have for us over the decade. Their habit of stringing together song after song into a 20minute experience is unmatched. Enjoying the setting sun at Outriggers with Southbound on the stage – Life is good!!! iT’S A WRAP - May was a doozie… We got gypped short of spring this year but we will survive. The fuse @ T-bone Tom’s

LooSE NoTES: Continued from Page 32

AROuNd ThE hORN - We stopped in a few of the areas popular hot spots in May and then some. In the Lighthouse District, T-Bone Tom’s had their usual packed house for dinner hour and on the Landshark Stage was The Fuse, an inner loop and casino band. Musically, these folks were pretty good despite being in the midst of a lineup change with their lead vocalist Big richard @ Jackie’s slot. Not being from the area, they had the visiting Brickhouse team disadvantage not knowing the crowd as would a local band like The Sharks who once were a staple band at T-Bone’s. On the other side of Clear Lake at Jackie’s, “Mixing things up” was happening as the neighborhood regulars held party in the dining hall and The Big Richard Band playing a strong set on the stage. We’d seen this band before on the Sherlock’s circuit and at Cabo, and we continue to look forward to the new upgrades going down at the Brickhouse.

The Cockeyed Seagull over the years have had the coldest air conditioning happening making this place one of my favorite summer hangouts. In May, we took in the Hourglass Trio, the entire band sans percussion and bass, for an evening of freeform song. To their list has been added several Simon and Garfunkel houglass songs, something you don’t catch Trio @ much in these parts. Cockeyed up north, we stopped in to catch a Seagull couple games at the South Side Roller Derby. Last year, Harvey ruined their practice rink throwing the groove into arrears. It was good seeing these skaters get after it. These are everyday people with everyday lives that can really get it going on wheels – an amazing kind of grace.

With the weather “finally” turning nice, we ditched the yard work and check out the Clear Lake Greek Festival. Like many of you, we’ve enjoyed this event throughout the years. It was nice seeing traditions carry on, be they food, drink, song, costume or dance. It was good seeing many familiar faces and a surprise of sorts meeting new acquaintances. Opa!!!!! Sons of Apollo @ Scout Bar

LooSE NoTES: Continued from Page 33

TOuR STOP CLEAR LAKE - And in May it was the night Sons of Apollo at Scout Bar. Admittedly, I had not heard about this band until I read about them in the April issue of The SCENE Magazine. Holy cow, these guys can definitely put on a show! You can tell lots about a band by who is in the house this evening, musicians from around the area and serious fans were here to check things out. These guys were not shy, performing under the bright lights big and bold. Keyboard player Derek Sherinian treated listeners with what I believe was the first Hammond B3 I’ve ever seen play at Scout Bar. Googling up the drummer, Mike Portnoy, also brings along the likes of Neil Peart, John Bonham and Keith Moon, which describes the Portnoy experience perfectly. Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, former lead guitarist for Guns & Roses (and a lot of other groups) is clearly maestro class and well rounded having a side gig working with “u.S. Embassies around the world on cross-cultural music programs, has his own line of hot award-winning hot sauces, and works with dozens of international charities visiting orphanages and children’s hospitals around the world with guitar in hand.” Bassist Billy felix Sheehan played his speed bass with a finesse Martin and frenzy that I often see from lead guitarists. @ Jeff Scott Soto, former vocalist with Journey, Scout easily makes the case that being front man of Bar your own band is much better than the replacement fill-in for a band that belonged to somebody else. And best of all, each of them can handle the lead break with ease… Five Brothers from Different Mothers – that would be Sons of Apollo…

Big Jordan @ Sylvan Beach festival

LooSE NoTES: Continued from Page 34

RESORT iN LA PORTE - After consecutive years of bad weather, the 62nd Sylvan Beach Festival knocked it out of the park. The new layout following post Harvey repairs are most impressive with a natural amphitheater stage here in our neighborhood. What’s cool about this event is the festival showcasing local talent along with outside regional acts. This year’s local acts included Big Jordan Band, The Sharks, and LC Roots. We caught Jordan and fiddler, Richard Rose at Epicurean Evening and was impressed with how their sound carried the hall. On this Chamber of Commerce day, we got to enjoy the full band. I recall Applebe and Rose at The the Cock-eyed Sharks Seagull open @ mics. It’s alSylvan ways cool seeBeach ing the local festival musicians progressing onto the bigger stages.

The Sharks are a longtime local collection of talent with Rob Rodrigues, Tom Bryan, Ricky Pitts and Rex Rameriz, with their own distinct sound. Within a few measures of listening to The Sharks play live, you know that distinct sound you’re hearing could belong to nobody else. These guys often played Outriggers and would often be the band on stage back when Tom still owned and ran things at T-Bone Tom’s. LC Roots, I understand, used to own the live music SCENE back in their days and people are pleased to hear they’re still around. Most of their shows these days are on the private party tour. It was good for everybody catch LC Roots live!

BACK ON ThE BEAT - Sometimes, the knees simply wear out and after a 30-month hiatus for knee replacement surgery, JJ Dynomite is back, and Katie’s was the place. I had to drive around the block twice to find parking. This is a clue to just how good this is. It was soon obvious that this band didn’t set their music aside during the break as they played with an intensity as if they owned it – very much appreciated by listeners. Word travels fast of their return and these guys are already booked for the upcoming Lonestar Rally, something to look forward to. A JJ Dynomite show is where people show up on a sure bet for a great gathering. This goes along nicely with my long standing bet that you can pick any night and very likely apt to catch a good music show at Katie’s! The streak continues...

NEW STOP ON ThE BEAT And that would be the Garage Bar & Grill in Alvin. We’ve heard many good comments about this place and say the recommendations were spot on. First thing I noticed was A BuNCH of familiar faces at the Garage that I’ve met over the years out on the SCENE. This place is big enough for everybody – be it for food, cold beverages, live music or all of the above and all at the same time! The atmosphere at the Garage was definitely “up,” the service crisp, and the fun down-to-earth. The night we stopped in had full house enjoying Vince King putting on a compelling Elvis show. I’ve a hunch we will be catching quite a few great live music acts at the Garage in the months ahead. This place was SCENE ready before we got here! Check it out!

Loose Notes

Andy & the Dreamsiscles @ oleanders Party

by Andy Eng

The good news is winter’s over and while spring cleaning dragged out longer this year, the live music in April was plentiful and exceptionally good! We enjoyed tagging up with lots of you out there. Let’s run down some of what all that went down...

BENT NEEdLES - On the Fun Meter happened in May at the annual Oleanders Party hosted by Andy and Vicki upchurch. This is always an event I clear my calendar for and from all the friendly familiar faces there, I’m in good company. The gathering was properly attended with the perfect blend of veterans and newbies, plenty of food and spirits for all. Joining Andy and the Dreamsicles was Bama Breeze and The CC Rider Band. Bama Breeze is a new band for me. Andy upBama church informed me he found this group playing at a boat show. I Breeze @ was able to find that Bama Breeze has already appeared at Railean oleanders Distillery with our Parrot Head friends which means we’ll be seeing Party more of this band in the months ahead. Intriguing was zach Duncan, a well schooled percussionist that tastefully and brilliantly worked the steel drum into tunes from the Beatles – Twas clever, light and bright!

The Dreamsicles filled in the middle slot opening their set in jazzy bluesy fashion taking me by surprise. I found it refreshing and thoughtful. upchurch ’fessed to me his love for jazz and I wouldn’t mind hearing more of the same in the days ahead -- the area needs it. Soon enough, though, the band was up to their old familiar tricks which is getting everybody on their feet and dancing like there’s no tomorrow. Another impressive ditty the Dreamsicles rolled out was a medley of traditional Americana numbers everybody knows but never gets to hear played live, complete with six-part harmonies, I found it appropriately moving and spine tingling. Well done!

CC riders @ oleanders Party

35 |

I’m not sure if my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt attended an Oleanders party. I will have to get back with you on that but one thing I’m quite sure of, he covered CC Rider, a Houston-based Classic Motown and R&B dance band who was the headliner for the party. I like the way this band sound checks by vamping a jazzy jam while letting the sound guy straighten out tone and levels. Vital is making sure the channel assignments are correctly labeled at the start. As for the band, CC Rider is perfect for swanky ballrooms, outdoor festivals, and neighborhood ice houses – Book ’em!!!

Dickinson’s Cranky Britches Brewing has earned critical praise for their popular Andromedia West Coast IPA, Damn Skippy Imperial Peanut Butter Porter and Sand Patrol American IPA. But like many breweries across the country, they are aware of the hype craft beer’s newest — and most controversial — style, the New England IPA (NEIPA), is getting. Often called the style created by Instagram and built on social media, the NEIPA features a fruity, juicy flavor and cloudy, hazy appearance. The style offers easy to love characteristics including tropical hop aromas, fruit-forward flavors, barely-there bitterness, and a soft, pillowy mouthfeel. But the key to the style’s success seems to be its appearance as it doesn’t look like any other beers and has been described as “photogenic liquid gold” for social media users. The appearance plus the beer’s usual limited release, short shelf life, and “cool factor,” equates to a shareable social media phenomenon resulting in NEIPAs going viral.

Top beer celebrities including Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Saint Arnold Brewing founder Brock Wagner have referred to the NEIPA hazy craze as “a fad.” It should be noted that just last ALREADY RELEASED month Saint Arnold used a lot of humor on doubling back and releas1. Cranky Britches brewer and co-founder Bill Arning also has approached the NEIPA with a sense of humor by announcing a 7-part "Fad" series of NEIPA releases. “First was Nehru Jacket, then Troll Doll and Pet Rocks,” Arning explained. “It’s not too hard to pick up on the theme. We invite people to come visit our ‘tapway’ and try one of our test batches so they can say ‘I was drinking fad beer before it was mainstream.’ Our most recent limited Poodle Skirt release was the Poodle Skirt, which is made from base Pilsner malt, flakes oats and milk sugar along with heavy additions of Mosaic and El Dorado hops. So far it has moved fast.”

Hip-hop also became a source of inspiration for Jones on many levels.

“Hearing the stories of others through hip-hop made me want to take the life I live and translate it into the music I love, putting my own experiences and voice into the music,” said Jones, who regularly surprises audiences with his signature look.

“I always wear a straw hat when I perform because that’s what we did in Georgia, when it was so hot outside we could melt. It’s a way of bringing who I am on stage,” he said.

Putting forth his experiences and personality into his music has now spawned three solo albums, and as a featured artist on more than two dozen other albums. Jones’ Scout Bar appearance in late June will come on the heels of his newest single release.

“I have a big single that will be released on the 4th of July called ‘Red White Blue,’ which is my effort as a patriotic song. I wanted to do something more patriotic for the people who have made our country possible through all of their sacrifice,” he said. So what can audiences expect when Demun Jones hits the stage at Scout in June?

“They’ll be caught off-guard, and usually are when they see I am a guy with a big beard and a straw hat. Expect lots of energy, as we also have an electric fiddle player and live drummer on stage, too. I just love seeing people lose themselves though, in such a positive mood because they are with you and enjoying what you created,” he said. Demun Jones will perform at Scout Bar on June 29, with local favorites Blackgrass Gospel and Gypsy Reaux opening the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. Grab your tickets early from the Scout Bar website – and when you go, make sure to tell them The SCENE sent you!

Scotty’s 2nd Location Celebrates Their 2nd Anniversary By Shawn domingues

Scotty’s Pub on the Bay is turning two, and they’re throwing a heck of a shindig to celebrate their second anniversary. A fun-filled evening is planned on June 30 (starting at 6 p.m.) with DJ Swift inside, live music by Jarred Reed outside on the patio, giveaways and food and drink specials. They even have a special “Shot Walk” planned, inspired by the cake walks from our youth – think musical chairs but with shots involved, this version might prove to be more difficult than, well, a cakewalk.

It all began in 2011 when Scott Sexton III, his father Scott Sexton, Jr., his brother Craig Sexton and their long-time friend, Greg Castro combined forces and opened Scotty’s Pub on Scarsdale (10943 Scarsdale Blvd.) Fulfilling a lifelong dream they each had, their vision was clear and their goal was lofty: To create the best neighborhood bar in the world. Because they all have a background in culinary arts, they combined their passion for good food with a hybrid bar concept (part nightclub and part pub) to create a “whiskey-heavy, craft beer-centric, foodie haven,” which proved to be a recipe for success. A recipe that Scott III, his father and their good friend and manager from the original Scotty's, Quinton Turner wanted to duplicate. They decided to spread their wings and expand their brand in 2016, and they landed in South Shore (3202 Marina Bay Drive, Kemah). Formerly the home of Claudio’s Piano Bar, they have transformed the space and built a state-of-the-art DJ booth next to the large dance floor, added pool tables, dart boards and video games, as well as an interactive jukebox, and made other cosmetic changes. Guests really enjoy sitting outside on the large patio next to the fountain that offers ambiance from a fire and water feature.

“I have really enjoyed meeting the people out here [in South Shore] over the past two years. Everyone seems to have such a passion for food, drinks and life. They really know how to party,” said Scott III. “I also love that I can be way more adventurous with food and drink specials. If I can get my hands on some nice frog legs or cow tongue to make lengua tacos, I don't even hesitate. They eat it up. It has allowed me to be more of myself, and I am very thankful for it,” said owner, Scott III.

There’s always something fun going on at Scotty’s. On Mondays, Mama Cass hosts Karaoke from 9 p.m. to 2a.m., and they have $3 u-Call-Its after 9 p.m.; on Tuesdays, guests can wine down and enjoy free bar bites when they purchase a bottle of wine; on Whiskey Wednesdays, they offer half off most whiskeys after 9 p.m. and $2 off their Sampler, as well as free snowman poker games at 7 and 9:30 p.m.; on Thursdays, they have live music from 8 to 11 p.m. (See this month’s ad for the lineup.); Saturdays and Sundays, they serve brunch 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and their happy hour is every day from 4 to 8 p.m.

But this isn’t just your average pub, Scotty’s is known for their delicious food with a menu full of unique and fun items like the ever-popular Grown up Grilled Cheese (Texas toast with brie, American and gruyere cheeses, bacon, apple and apricot preserves, served with fries) or the Pork Belly Tacos (10-day brown sugar cured pork belly, roasted and then lightly fried right before they go on tacos to crisp them up). Their pub grub is definitely above the bar and by the quirky names they give their fare, it’s obvious they have a lot of fun creating their menu with names like, The Greatest Samich in the World, Tatortachos and Disco Fries.

Demun Jones hits the Scout Bar

Stage in June By Sarah Piña

Since its inception, Scout Bar has earned the reputation of a rock venue that brings not only the biggest rock acts to town from all over the country and the world, but a variety of different performances ranging from reggae bands from Latin America to heavy metal from Germany. This summer, Scout will continue this tradition in a variety of ways—including having Demun Jones come to the stage for his first performance as a solo artist in Houston.

(w/Gypsy Reaux, Blackgrass Gospel & South) Jones initially got his start in music through influences from rap groups in Macon, north of his native Jones County, Georgia, through performing at numerous talent shows and open mics around town (“I was never scared to get up there, never was,” he recalled). Later, he would join Southern rock/hip-hip/country group Rehab, performing and touring for the well-known group for almost 10 years. Fast-forward some years later, and Jones now has released albums and music videos of his own, while also touring as a solo artist for the last several years, bringing his unique blend of hip-hip and country across the nation. The influences and what brought him to this point are many, however. “I come from a family of artists—of painters, and musicians. My father was a thrift mason; my grandfather even after a mill accident played guitar with just two fingers. I also grew up with all kinds of music around me. My brother was into classic rock, while my mom was more into Motown and Marvin Gaye, so I grew up listening to both the Jackson 5 and Jimi Hendrix, which was very influential on me. And then I hear things like N.W.A. rapping about Compton and life in Compton, which coming from Georgia was really an education,” he said.

months, but here we are in our 16th year and we’re still having a good time playing and entertaining our friends and new folks as much as we did when we first started,” said vocalist Ben Rod. “We’d really like to thank everyone that’s followed us over the years, and appreciate everyone that has come to see us and keeps us busy,” he added.

The current lineup of The Slags include Rod (vocals); Brittney Valdez (vocals); Tony Nalalizio (guitar and vocals); Charlie Carlisle (drums); and John Pruiett (bass). Their influences vary greatly, and this reflects in their diverse musical shows that have drawn audiences for almost two decades now. “We all have various musical influences. Mine range anywhere from ’50s doo-wop to ’70s disco and punk rock, so I’m all over the place. And I’d say that the other are just as open-minded in their tastes. Our motto has always been that ‘a good song is a good song no matter who wrote it!’” said Rod.

And apart from their regular shows in the greater Houston area including Clear Lake and Galveston, the band has had the opportunity to perform at major area events as well.

“Some of the more memorable shows have been the Astros World Series Championship Parade at City Hall, and of course, the Houston Texans Pregame Show, which is always fun,” he said. So what can audiences new to The Slags expect from a show?

BooNDoGGLES PuB to mark 20 years with celebration (Sat. June 30) and more

Boondoggles pub to Mark 20 years with community celebration and 20 days of specials including 1998 happy hour prices

Boondoggles Pub, the locally owned and operated gathering spot known for good times, freshly poured craft beers and award-winning wood-fired pizza, will commemorate its 20th year in the Clear Lake area in this month. In conjunction with the anniversary, the pub will host a community celebration (open to the public) on Saturday, June 30 with live music, food and brew, door prizes and 20th anniversary collectors’ T-shirts and posters.

Picture Book, the Houston Press Music Awards’ “Best Cover Band” nominee who celebrates the music of the British Invasion, as well as American Rock & Roll, will headline the live music lineup in the parking lot, with performances by José Ortega and Lex Kuhl. Twenty days of 20th anniversary specials will follow, featuring 1998 happy hour prices through July 20. Daily specials will include a free beer for mug club members, “Free Drink Friday” (limit one), a free children’s waffle, buy-one-get-one-free pizza specials and more. Originally a boat engine repair shop, the Boondoggles building was meticulously transformed, guided by the owner’s vision, his quest for architectural preservation and a strict budget. Over the course of an entire year, he personally collected and stored salvageable items from demolition projects around the local area, other parts of the country, and as far away as England. All of the structure’s steel came from the demolished Nassau Bay Sakowitz Center. Wooden beams and flooring were reclaimed, as were the air conditioning units. Additional recycle treasures include old warehouse bricks from Chicago, doors from an old school in Lake Charles (Louisiana), church windows from West Virginia and a clock from London’s Victoria Station. Challenging and rewarding, the preservation effort brought forth an environmentally green structure with historic character and charming Old-World feel.

Boondoggles quickly became a source of local pride introducing the area to a superb beer delivery system of nearly 50 taps and a secret dough recipe that has earned accolades for pizza baked in the pub’s brick wood-fired oven, where oak and mesquite produce temperatures of over 500 degrees. The now-famous “Mug Club” was introduced at the main bar. Patrons purchase solid pewter tankards, which are stored on hooks hanging from the ceiling, and fill them with their beverage of choice. The tankard holds several ounces more than a traditional pint in are engraved with any name a patron chooses — from NASA missions to pet dogs. - Continued on Page 44
