BAYSHORE GRILL & BILLIARDS: Full-Service Restaurant & Upscale Pool Hall
By Shawn domingues
misho ivic, owner of one of the largest oyster companies in texas, didn’t set out to be in the restaurant business, it just kind of happened.
Last year, he purchased san Leon’s well-known hidden gem, gilhooley’s simply because he loved the food and he loved the restaurant and did not want to see it close down or sold to someone who wouldn’t keep the essence of his favorite place to eat oysters.
Bayshore grill and Billiards is misho’s latest venture and san Leon’s newest fullservice, family-friendly restaurant. Located at 137 21st street on the corner of Bayshore Drive (previously Casper’s), the building has been extensively renovated to incorporate the look of an upscale pool hall while maintaining a down-home feel. the fun and friendly atmosphere of Bayshore grill is a direct reflection of the ivic family philosophy. misho’s daughters, Frances ivic Jurisich and Annie ivic Kennedy are overseeing the new addition to the family business, ensuring this family-oriented restaurant maintains the ivic’s high standards and carries on with their philosophy. “our employees and loyal customers become our extended family and that is the secret to our success,” Jurisich said.
misho and his family are well known in san Leon for their generosity and love of their community. With Bayshore grill they wanted to give the people of their community a comfortable place for everyone in the family to hang out, have fun and eat a great meal together. the menu was created by restaurant expert mark Collins and Bayshore’s head chef Celestino Flores. Flores got his start at Perry’s steakhouse more than 20 years ago and has been working in restaurant kitchens ever since. With an emphasis on quality, Bayshore’s diverse menu has something for everyone and prices that won’t break the bank – especially on mondays when kids eat free (with the purchase of an adult entrée) or on Wednesdays when wings are only 50 cents. - Continued on Page 13
Bayshore Grill and Billiards is working with Communities in Schools to collect school supplies for the local San Leon school. They will be collecting goods during the month of August. The last day to donate will be the August 25 during their Grand Opening event. Visit the Bayshore Grill and Billiards Facebook page for a list of items needed and more information.

BAYSHORE GRILL & BILLIARDS CONTiNued FROM PAGe 10
on thursdays, appetizers are half off, and there are daily lunch specials as well.
“People love our Billiard sticks, which are baconwrapped asparagus, battered in special batter, fried and topped with our secret sauce,” said general manager, Kendra Davis. “our guests also go crazy for our homemade onion rings which is our secret recipe, and we constantly get praise for our barbecue that is made with a rub – also our secret recipe – and smoked for hours.”
But it’s not all about the food at Bayshore grill and Billiards. there are eight tournament-sized pool tables upstairs where guests can pay to play pool by the hour or enter to play in one of the weekly pool tournaments held on monday and tuesday nights. An interesting fact that many people may not know is that Casper’s was actually the host of many televised pool tournaments on esPN.
Downstairs, next to the main dining area, there are more pool tables and a shuffleboard table for those who want to play just for fun. the expansive building has several different areas that can be reserved for large groups or private parties, including downstairs game room. galveston Bay can be seen from the upstairs patio. meet your friends there or make new ones while playing corn hole, Jenga and hook-and-ring games. every sunday at 2 p.m., enjoy live music, $4 pool and drink specials. upstairs is 21 and up on Friday and saturday after 7 p.m., with the second floor bar open nightly. happy hour is all day on monday and from 3 to 7 p.m. on tuesday through Friday.
the ivic family is proud to offer a fun and friendly atmosphere to all of their guests and genuinely want everyone to feel comfortable and have a great time when they enter the doors at Bayshore grill.

SUNSATIONAL ART Featured Artist: SCOTT STILLMAN
By Kelley dawson solar Pyrography is creating art by focusing the sun's rays through a lens to "burn" images into wood according to local solar carving expert, scott stillman. he learned the uncommon art technique during a retreat at the Redwood National Forest in California.
“one of the instructors there lead a class, and i was hooked. i'm now one of about 20 people in the world who art with the sun,” declared stillman.
he added, “it helps me relax and it’s a lot of fun.” stillman shared solar carving helps quiet his mind. “it is like meditating, but useful,” he said.
his unique meditation method certainly creates “sunsational” works of art. stillman informed the tools for etching with the sun include a wooden base, a magnifying glass, and requires shade 5.0 or better grade welding glasses to protect the eyes. he cautioned engaging in solar pyrography without proper eye protection can cause blindness.
stillman explained he usually sketches the subject or pattern into wood first and then fills it in by moving the lens around. he mentioned the bigger the lens the broader the brush and smaller lenses necessitate more movement.
“it takes a lot of finesse. it’s very patient work,” he advised. As far as the substrate or wooden base; stillman shared, “i think drift wood has the best character, but anything that strikes your fancy will work.”
he expressed he found solar carving interesting since no one else is really doing it. stillman reported that most people are not comfortable sitting out in the sun for hours at a time. other than the heat of being outdoors, the only hot spot during solar pyrography is at the focal point which can cause the smell of burning wood.

“i love making the world just a little better and this is a skill that i'm good at. i love the first reaction that i get when presenting a piece,” stated stillman. he revealed most of his pieces are charity auction items and he tries to use the charity as his inspiration. he said, “it’s a hobby. i don't sell art.”
stillman admitted he’s sold less than 20 pieces. “i do it because i support a cause or because i want to not because someone asked me to,” he disclosed. stillman’s reasons for creating make his sun art even more stellar. Kiss Alike @ Jackie’s Brickhouse
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 31
Let It Rock @ Jackie’s Brickhouse
TRiBuTe BANdS GALORe - Words have been written that some of the top tribute bands in the nation are in the Waterfront Capital of texas. on the final saturday before deadline, we ventured out for a sampling that included Animosity (sevendust tribute) at Scout Bar and on to Jackie’s Brickhouse for Let it Rock (Bon Jovi tribute) and wrapped it up with Kiss Alike. All three did great jobs capturing the audio component. i believe Let it Rock had the largest number of people in the audience singing along. Visually, Kiss Alike took top honors that evening. the overall winner? Why the audience, of course!
Animosity @ Scout Bar
NeW BANd ON The BeAT - And that would be Diamond Jack, who we caught for our first time at Rock the Dock in July. thinking back, i can’t recall a new band getting the call to this big stage perhaps quicker. this shouldn’t be a surprise as this is one talented bunch with plenty of experience. this five piece group includes Paul Bryon (Keys, guitar), Kent Newman & Rob Jacobs (lead guitars), scott madigan (bass) and stacey steele (drums) - And all can sing…. Diamond Jack sports a two lead guitar approach (Newman and Jacobs) allowing the band to take on many of the classic rock numbers we rarely get to enjoy played out live. Another treat is getting to see Paul Bryon of Fab 5 fame, out from behind his keyboard an on guitar for an occasional song. i may have missed it but steele too is known to play guitar and with scott madigan driving the bus on bass, i’m sure there’s a lot more to this band that we’ll be getting to see in shows ahead. Diamond Jack @ Rock The Dock
iT’S A WRAP - the good news is that the days are getting shorter which means things should start cooling down a bit. As it does, we’ve still plenty of summer happening which means fun in the sun and hanging out at one of the many cool spots we have on the sCeNe. Keep a copy of the sCeNe handy at home, at work, and in the car, so you can keep up with all that’s happening in our area.

Dennis DeYoung (Styx) @ Baytown’s July 4th
LOOSE NOTES: From Page 32
The ShOW ThAT WeNT ON - over the years, the Baytown Fourth of July Festival has earned a solid place on my list of local favorite events. i recommend this event to readers without hesitation and more so after this year as cast of hardy live music enthusiasts demonstrated utmost gumption outlasting a texas cloudburst with 60 mph gusts — a truly surreal experience… While many of the other community events were being cancelled, the Baytown Parks & Recreation Department — along with the entire municipal supporting cast — did not let a bit of rain get in the way. Personally, the last time i saw Dennis DeYoung (DDY) was when he was with styx back in 1974. myself and others *really* wanted to see this show.
the opening act went off without a hitch. Cloudy breezy skies things cool during the Rickey Davis Classic Band. even cooler was how this local houston “Frank sinatra” tribute show played stretches of refreshing jazz, both of which i’ve never witnessed in our area, and both clearly delighting festival listeners. then came the colossal cloudburst… it was like the rains in the Woodstock reruns. While we waited, i got to chat with guitarist Jim Leahey who was keeping fans engaged handing out August zadras’ guitar picks to fans in the crowd, on how he has been able to help keep DeYoung still rocking strong at the age of 71 years young. Leahey, shared, “We’ve been together since 2008, time has really flown by. it’s been really fun and makes you appreciate just how precious time is.” take away #1 - have fun….
Fortunately, the organizers with their smart phone weather apps observed and witnessed a break in the storm occurring. the band came out to inspect the well wrapped stage and spotted the crowd still there. According to zadras on his live blog, “We’re in Baytown, outside of houston, and a major storm rolled in... 90 min later, this incredible bunch of thrill seekers remain, and we’re gonna do this!!” these guys likely had fine print in their contract excusing them from having to play. Yet DeYoung and the band put forth a powerful five-song set including their opening songs (Lady & mr. Roboto), Babe, and their encore numbers (Renegade & sail Away). ‘twas over the top!!! Ricky Davis Classic Band the band played as if there was no tomorrow and the fans rocked out in kind. musically, lead guitarists Lea- @ Baytown’s 4th of July
hey and zadras did something interesting playing identical tones on rhythm creating a molten metal pad that was thick, heavy, and complex A sound that normally would have taken a studio to produce which we enjoyed live. Vocals from the entire band, including the Dennis’s inspirational suzanne DeYoung, were powerful and pure. i suppose take Away #2 here is always have your go - Continued on Page 30 to’s to go to should ever life cut you short. Can’t wait until next year!
Alan Ward (Featured Brewer): From Page 46
Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. Live is too short not to follow your passion but be ready for a lot of hard work, long days, and a lot of cleaning.
The state of the Texas craft beer scene is just exploding! there was a time i knew every brewery owner and brewer in texas, now i just can’t keep up. it is an exciting time to be in the industry with a lot of great craft beer out there.
Favorite perk of working in a brewery is the people you get to meet and the brotherhood/sisterhood of brewer. the industry is truly

unique. i have travel the united states and have always been welcomed in to every brewery that i have visited like i was a member of their family.
Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is the constant cleaning that is needed.
if you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? if i had to start working at another brewery and as not to have to pick between my texas friends, i think i would pick sierra Nevada Brewing. they are family owned and operated. they make great beer. they have a great sustainability plan. Lastly i think North Carolina would be a nice place to live if i had to leave texas that is.
Joel Da Silva @ Katie’s Bar
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 33
TOuR STOP BACLiFF - Which would be Katie’s where the “old school vibe” is alive and well. i’m back to following my advice of over two years running: if you see an act you haven’t heard of before at Katie’s, check it out as it’ll likely be a good one. And with that, we scored another win catching Joel Da silva and his brand of Americana soul. hailing from Florida, this international music & entertainment Association Award Winner had no problem handling houston heat, sporting a classy red velvet jacket throughout his show.
one thing interesting was how Dasilva came into town without his band opting to have local drummer and bassist tommy hampton and matt Jaroszewicz sit in. Later that evening, Jason Padilla sat in for awhile on the kit, with matt switching to guitar and Dasilva over to bass. As sir Jagger once said, ‘music has certain conventions that when followed, allows strangers from across the world to gather and create music.’ While these musicians were not entirely “strangers,” they had not played together before, and from what i could tell, nobody in the audience could tell either. Also in the house that evening was KPFt’s Blues hound James Nagel along with his lovely wife Colleen. Both of these two are true champions to the cause. We discussed what would be a good way to release the collection of photos taken by the late Jim shortt — more on that later. Back to the music, the dynamics of the music that evening spanned an incredible decibel range, at times softer than conversation level. the results were a masterful collecting of the audience's attention unlike anything i’ve seen. Dasilva has a guitar tone much like Robin trower — a tone you rarely hear unless you’re listening to Robin trower. he also carries along a playlist of originals with a nitty gritty lyrical edge. During the break, he tells me that gets a lot of his musical inspiration from his father that he never met, who passed away when Joel was a young boy of age 3. his father, an accomplished musician himself, had left behind recordings with a foundation somewhere between Brazilian and what would come to be ukraine along with every place in between. You definitely feel an influence at work when you listen to Da silva’s two CDs, “everywhere From here” and “the midnight howl.” Keep an eye out for Joel Dasilva. he said his houston experience was special. he’s likely to return.

Funkson @ The Garage
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 42 scheduling had us dropping into the garage Bar & grill twice in July. early in the month, we caught Funkson as i was extremely curious how the big building held together the band’s big band sound — Very nicely!!! Funksion’s front team of Frankie and michael had no trouble getting the audience up on their feet and into a boogie woogie rhythm. i’m really loving the spirit and backbone of folks from Alvin. they’re a great bunch that make up our sCeNe. Later in July, we had…
SANTA Fe STRONG - the garage Bar and grill was the center of the universe for this worthy fundraiser. Personal matters (broken car) had me leaving the event early, but not before enjoying the live music fun of Promising Lies from the school of Rock as well as a set from hourglass with Joey Wainwright. i’m sure the other performers (Vince King, David Joel, turning Point & Pee Wee Bowen) made the day magical. the tall building out in the country was well designed for this event, comfortably handling the full house of patrons and riders with ease. Props to the great staff and many volunteers running this event. When i left, the live auctions were happening with plenty of action. Word is the fundraiser landed well into the 5-figure range for the “official charity for the santa Fe” cause. great job people!!! thanks to all who were a part! Santa Fe Strong Benefit @ The Garage

Favorite Texas brewed beer? My Favorite Texas brewed beer is Endeavor by Saint Arnold Brewing. I am a fan of double IPA’s and Brock and the Saint Arnold’s team hit it out of the park with this malty, hoppy rich experience. I also like the Adult size bottle it comes in.

L to R: Brad Rogers and Alan Ward
Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? Picking a nonTexas brewed beer is difficult. I am torn between one that I can get locally and one that is very hard to find in Texas. By far my favorite non-Texas beer that I can find is Belheaven Scottish Ale on nitro. They have been brewing it for almost 300 years. I really enjoy the smooth, rich and nutty flavor of this classic Scottish Ale. The history and simplicity of the beer really brings a warm spot in my heart for this beer. For a hard to find beer I have to go with Traquair Jacobite Ale. It was first brewed to celebrate the anniversary of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. It is based on an eighteenth century recipe the ale is spiced with coriander which gives a remarkably fresh aftertaste. Here again a piece of history.
Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? My L to R: Alan Ward favorite beer that we and Brad Rogers brew is Green Ogre. This is an Imperial IPA with a rich malty complexity.
What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? I truly believe that Pilsners are over looked by most local beer enthusiast. With the heat in Texas a nice German Style Pilsner is hard to beat.
Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? I have never been to GABF and hope to someday be able to make the trip. It falls right at the start of the Texas Renaissance Festival so attendance has always been hard to manage. Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? My favorite setting to enjoy a beer is right off the bottling or canning line no matter the brewery. There is nothing better than grabbing a beer that has just been packaged and enjoying it.
The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. My last job before becoming a professional brewer was as a database/system administrator. In a way it was kind of like brewing in there where always new things to learn and you could build something from scratch. - Continued on Page 31

Loose Notes hello, good people! hope everybody is keeping their cool and holding life together well. this month: it was simply “impossible” to cover every show out there, but based on the shows we sampled, can safely declare that excellent live music was abundant in July. it was good tagging up with many of you out there. Let’s run down some of what all that went down, in no particular order:

AROuNd The hORN - earlier in the year, we caught the Network sound Band at t-Bone tom’s and a follow up visit was in order. this houston band puts forth an eclectic blend of exotico, country, classic rock, blues and jazz. even with the gulf Coast summer heat upon us, the Network sound Band puts on one cool show...
it was a weekday night when saw that Jackie’s Brickhouse brought sick Duck to Clear Lake shores. this was the first time i’ve caught this band in the area, and i was curious enough to check them out. Looking over their schedule, they perform across the region and would be a regular on the sherlock’s circuit if it were still around. Clever and witty, the Ducks mixed it up nicely with medleys of hall & oats, Pink Floyd, Doobie Brothers, george michael and some kind of hip-hop marley-esque reggae... sick Duck... the kids are alright....

JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE
music lost one of its greats early last month with the untimely passing of frontman Luther Rada of Luther and the healers. the texas-based blues band formed by Rada in the early ‘90s became an area favorite in a short span of time.
“he was a master of his craft, absolutely, The Healers will play at T-Bone Tom’s in Kemah on but Luther also had a business degree and a August 29 and at Katie’s in Bacliff on September 8 very sharp mind, so the band became a success pretty quickly. By the mid-’90s, they were playing over 300 dates a year all over houston,” said Larry evans, who has played bass for the band for almost four years and had known Rada for more than two decades in the music scene. “he really knew how to run a band and to make the audience feel appreciated. he always made everyone feel like they were part of the band, always recognizing people and greeting them personally,” he said. musically, the band—whose current lineup in includes evans on bass, KC Cartwright on drums, skip Nallia on keyboard, and steve hitt on guitar—is a blues band, but with a lot of variety.
“Luther did straight blues, but we do everything from Louis Armstrong to earth, Wind & Fire to B.B. King and muddy Waters. At the heart of it, we are a blues band, but play blues, jazz, funk, and R&B,” evans said. And the rich musical legacy that Luther Rada left with Luther and the healers will continue on now as the healers throughout the area. “We can’t be the same band, but we want to have the same level of excellence,” evans said, reflecting on the great memories together as Luther and the healers.

“For me it’s not one specific moment, but i will always remember his professionalism. As far as funnier things... he always wanted the band to move around the on the stage and smile, and sometimes he’d look over at me with this big cheesy grin on his face, and i would crack up laughing,” he said.
“i also think that sometimes you learn more about a person by observing them. With Lu, he would become mr. entertainer. if a family and kids walked by in Kemah, for example, he would become very animated—it was like flipping on a switch for him. it didn’t matter if he was tired or anything else, he was going to put on a show for them. that’s the one thing i will remember most about the man.”

Introducing Rockey’s
Piano Bar
Sing us a Song, Piano Man! The Bay Area’s Only Interactive Sing-along Piano Bar is Now Open
By Shawn domingues
At Rockey’s Piano Bar, audience participation isn’t required, but is certainly encouraged. the sing-along shows are completely interactive and the crowd becomes part of the entertainment as they sing along, clap along or dance along to their favorite tunes. Audience members can call the shots, or songs rather, and create the set list for the night by filling out their song requests for the talented musician behind the red piano on stage who knows just how to keep the energy up and the crowd engaged. “We want everyone who comes to Rockey’s to really want to come back for more and tell their friends how much fun they had,” said David solis, one of the owners of the Bay Area’s only interactive sing-along piano bar.
the original Rockey’s Piano Bar opened its doors in 2016 in Round Rock (texas), which is where Rockey’s first got its name (combining the word “rock” with piano “keys”). the piano bar came about when four friends and business partners, (David solis, Domingo hernandez, mike Lerma and Johnny ontiveros) decided they wanted to open a bar together; but they didn’t want to open just any bar; they wanted a fun bar with a niche.
“We grew up going to piano bars while at ut in Austin and always had a blast,” said hernandez, “We remembered seeing so many people having fun and enjoying themselves and strangers just hugging and dancing and having a great time, and we knew that was the environment that we wanted at our bar. so, we took the idea and ran with it!” And two years later – after the success of the original location – the owners decided to open a second location, and solis – who grew up in texas City – knew this area would be perfect for
their concept, so he convinced the others to give the Bay Area market a try when he discovered a space for lease next to scout Bar (18313 egret Bay Blvd.).
the talented musicians tickling the ivories for the sing-along shows are veterans in the industry and have been hand-selected for their ability to keep the crowd engaged and fully entertained all night. one of these talented musicians, matt Wilson, got his start at the legendary Kenny Luna’s ivory Cat tavern on 6th street in Austin while he was going to school at the university of texas in 1995. he then moved to orlando and worked at the dueling piano bar at Walt Disney World for a couple years before landing a role with the touring company of the Broadway musical, “i’m movin’ out,” a jukebox musical featuring the songs of the original piano man, Billy Joel. Wilson moved back to Austin after touring with the musical for a couple of years and he was instrumental in helping the original Rockey’s in Round Rock become such a big success. Wilson and his fellow talented musicians rotate between the two locations to play the sing-along shows. each one of them knows how to play just about any song in just about every genre.
“i wouldn’t say that we know every song, but we aim to know every song. if we don’t know your song specifically, we will try to fake it, and if we can’t fake it, we’ll play something by the same band or artist or something that’s like it or from the same era. it doesn’t happen often, but certainly, we can be stumped every once in a while,” said Wilson. - Continued on Page 43
