A Little Local High-Rise History While it wasn’t the “Space race” of the ‘60s that directly resulted in the growth of our area — the home of U.S. human Spaceflight, there once was a local race into the sky and the winner remains visible from miles away.

By John ennis

in 2007, robin L. parsley’s endeavour holdings inc. beat out a number of other developers hoping to be the first to the Clear Lake high-rise marketplace with the completion of the 30-story endeavour Clear Lake condominium tower in pasadena. the tower (which was completed behind the original construction schedule just as the national real estate market collapsed and has since changed hands) is one of roughly 20 towers once envisioned to rise up from the Clear Lake shoreline. obviously our area’s transformation into a miniature South beach (miami) never happened as the market crash of 2007 changed everything and only the endeavour stands today. but recent conversations about and confusion regarding this area’s flirtation with the high-rise real estate market suggested to me it was time — a dozen years since its “height” of excitement — for a review. especially since ramifications from many of the large waterfront real estate purchases and the demolition of venues such as the parkside marina, Seabrook beach Club, Studio 54 and Lake house apartments that immediately followed are still visible today. the lonely tower currently standing was only the first of five high-rise towers planned to be built under the endeavour brand.

3 El Lago Marina Condos, El Lago

Located just a football field away from endeavour Clear Lake in the same, small stretch of pasadena that reaches Clear Lake’s shores, endeavour parkside was announced in august 2006 and originally scheduled to be completed by late 2007 in the still vacant former home of the parkside marina near Clear Lake park. the $55-million, 34-story residential condominium tower would have been even taller and more upscale than its older sister when completed, featuring a 24-hour fitness center, rooftop lounge and condos priced to $3 million (in 2007). at the same time as the first endeavour was being completed and the land for the second tower (endeavour parkside) was being cleared, endeavour holdings partnered with Sun resorts international, inc. to buy the marker 1 marina in Seabrook and renamed it endeavour marina. today home to many businesses including Sam’s boat, bullock 12 marine, the admiral on Clear Lake and Jet Ski houston among others.

Gio's Flying Pizza and Pasta

Pizza Pies and a Whole lot of Amoré By shawn domingues

on any given day or night, disks of dough can be seen flying through the air at gio’s Flying pizza and pasta. because of the open kitchen design, guests can watch the pizza makers throwing dough up high in the air and catching it with one hand, continuously tossing and spinning the dough until it’s the desired size and thickness. While this performance provides entertainment for the guests, there’s more to this show than meets the eye. hand tossing pizza dough helps to retain moisture and creates a better crust that is light and fluffy. but gio’s is not “just another pizza place.” With an extensive menu that includes italian specialty dishes as well as the classics, and a variety of unique menu items not typically found in the average pizzeria, gio’s Flying pizza and pasta goes way beyond living up to its name. gio’s has been a local favorite in Dickinson for almost ten years, and although some menu items and the décor have changed over the years, their goal to have every customer leave happy, remains the same. owners Steve and Diana gunnett are very hands-on and passionate about their restaurant, their employees and the clientele they serve.

“our mission is to offer our guests authentic italian dishes made with the freshest ingredients,” said Diana, “and we strive to achieve the highest level of customer service possible.” the large dining area has been continuously updated over the years, to achieve an upscale modern décor with just enough tuscan charm to maintain the casual atmosphere their regular customers have come to love, with the capacity to host large parties of up to 40 people. the updated bar area has plenty of cocktail tables and barstools to accommodate the happy hour crowd (monday through Friday 3 to 6 p.m.) and six large hDtVs to accommodate sports fans on game days. every dish is prepared from scratch using only the freshest ingredients and their extensive menu includes classic italian dishes like Fettuccine alfredo and homemade Lasagna, specialty dishes like the blue Cheese Crusted (hand-cut) ribeye Steak and rosemary Chicken Kabobs, original appetizers like the popular gator eggs (named after the Dickinson high school mascot) and the Spicy italian eggrolls, a variety of fresh salads, homemade soups, hoagies, paninis, a large selection of desserts and six flavors of gelato.

“Nothing on our menu is pre-processed,” said owner Steve gunnett, “We hand-cut our ribeyes, our sauce is made fresh daily, we make the dough and roll it ourselves – everything is made with a lot of love and care.”

pizza to go is their most popular menu item, and with gourmet toppings like grilled chicken, meatballs, artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, pesto, provolone, feta and ricotta cheeses, as well as all the usual pizza toppings, it’s no wonder gio’s pizza pies are flying out the door. Customers have the option to dine-in or carry-out, and delivery is available within a six-mile radius from the restaurant; gio’s is happy to fill the order with any of the dishes from their expansive menu as well. - Continued on Page 15

A Little Local High-Rise History

Continued From Page 10 -11

the contiguous waterfront parcel was soon increased to more than 15 acres following the purchase and demolition of the Lake house apartments and two popular waterfront venues including the Seabrook beach Club. the plan was a mixed-use development that would include three high-rise towers. one was planned to house an “international luxury hotel” and 50 condominiums totaling 100,000 square feet. another would be a high-rise office building with 200,000 square feet of Class a space overlooking Clear Lake. the third was to be a condominium tower, branded separately as the endeavour Lofts on Clear Lake, with 200 units averaging 1,500 square feet per unit. the plan also called for 500 new wet slips, public waterfront boardwalks and both high-end retail and fine restaurants, all to be built to the west of the current indoor dry-stack marina and facilities that is today’s endeavour marina.

one reason for this article was the confusion about the shoreline in el Lago that will become the future home of the brand new, relocated outriggers once the popular waterfront restaurant is forced to close as a result of the on-going hWY. 146 road construction.

roughly 15 years ago, i had a chance to visit with developer garson Silvers who literally bet his farm on building the first high-rise tower along Clear Lake. Silvers mortgaged his tomball-area farm to buy the eyesore that was the el Lago marina (before hurricane ike wiped it out) and build the el Lago marina Condos. the project was to include a 144-unit luxury highrise condo, a 44-suite boutique hotel and 10,000 square feet of retail space including a restaurant and spa. Unfortunately for Silvers, there was quite a political uproar caused by a very vocal minority of waterfront home owners in el Lago who feared their waterfront view might be compromised and the plan was put on hold awaiting a zoning change to remove height restrictions in the city. the restrictions were changed but not before Silvers was forced to lease out the property to generate revenue. he remained loyal to his plan to develop the marina as well as another el Lago high-rise project, the

Lighthouse at 4011. but i remember Silvers explained at the time that, “the highrise market is all about timing.” indeed it was. the combination of losing the race to be first immediately followed by the untimely financial crisis of 2007 and its effect on the real estate market and financing industry put a stop to the local flirtation with high-rise development.

the Lighthouse at 4011 in el Lago was to become the first LeeD-certified high-rise condominium project on the texas gulf Coast. plans for the 19-floor structure originally included parking on the first four floors with residential units ranging from $500,000 to $2.9 million starting on floor five. but because of the turmoil in the financing industry, plans changed for the building to become a hotel with a limited number of condos at the top. plans also changed for the beacon island development on the former Lighthouse island across from the South Shore harbour resort in League City. purchased in December 2006 by the Verandah Companies and Crow holdings, Lighthouse island was cleared of trees and renamed beacon island. the original plan was for a 35-acre development including a gated community of up to 800 luxury residences featuring Carolina-inspired architecture and a grand bridge entrance. two 25-story high-rise towers, two 14-story mid-rise buildings and two 6-story condominiums plus additional townhomes. While there has been residential development on beacon island in recent years, it’s been a slow process and far short of what was originally planned (6 buildings totaling 90 stories and 800 luxury residences). Further east from beacon island along the south shore of Clear Lake in Kemah, there were plans to bring a “new era of high-rises to life” with “Luxury, Country Club Condominium living” at a project called Laguna de Levine. Located

beside the Star Fleet marina and behind portofino harbour marina, Laguna de Levine was to include both a high-rise and mid-rise tower connected by retail shops and a rooftop pool. plans called for the taller tower to feature the “Sky bar” on the top floor overlooking the lake and bay. across the channel in Seabrook, twin 20story condominiums were proposed for Jennings island near the Seabrook Shipyard and an 8-story, 99-unit mid-rise was once planned for the point in Seabrook across the channel from the Kemah boardwalk. other planned projects never to get off of the ground locally include the amstel in League City across the marina form the South Shore harbour resort where the marina Village custom home development is today, the Launch at NaSa in Nassau bay and the apollo in Seabrook was to be built where the turtle Club (barge 295 today) was docked. but fear not, if waterfront, high-rise living is calling you as there are units available on the 22nd, 21st, 19th and 18th floor of the endeavour high-rise overlooking Clear Lake. Call one of the two top realtors in the area (Kimberly harding: 281-554-7653 or Priscilla ennis: 281204-1001) to tour one today.

PASSION TO PAINT Featured Artist: JENNIFER CARLILE

By Kelley dawson “i've always had a passion to be able to paint. back in 2003, right before i moved to houston, i had a vivid dream in color. in the dream, i was creating huge colorful paintings that were embellished with lots of jewels,” told local artist Jennifer Carlile.

her adoration for colors began when she was a kid. Carlile’s dad worked freelance in advertising. his studio was located on the top floor of their home. She said the studio had big drafting boards and wonderful colored pencils. Carlile recounted she didn’t know how to draw but practiced with shapes and colors not normally put together. She shared, “my dad said i was so good at putting colors together. one day, you’re going to grow up and be an artist.”

then as an older child, Carlile’s mom took her to a gem and jewelry show. Carlile was intrigued. She taught herself jewelry-making which later became a major part of her life. Carlile expressed a want to learn to paint during her high school years.

She disclosed, “it was like i was scared of it; holding back. maybe it wasn’t the right time. god gives you the door to open.” Carlile’s door first opened 14 years ago when she took a painting class from another SCeNe spotlight artist, Dew harvey. “i didn't follow through with painting for several years after that; because i was so busy trying to start up my jewelry business, trying to make some roots in texas, and starting over. i put painting on hold; knowing one day i would return to it,” admitted Carlile. She spent the next ten years running her jewelry businesses. Carlile revealed, “i kept going back to that vivid colorful dream that i had about painting, and i was easily encouraged to take several more art classes at Dew's paint Drops Studio. i've been painting for almost five years now.”

Carlile declared working with color combinations and putting “god’s beautiful creations onto canvas” are what she loves most about painting. She added, “my inspiration is that i'm following my vivid colorful dream and evolving my god-given gifts and talents more each day while creating art that i love and that's exciting for me.”

Carlile paints realism in oils and abstract works with acrylics. her substrates consist of canvas, wood, or anything she may find. “When i want control, i work with oils and take my time to make [the painting] even more awesome,” informed Carlile. She mentioned abstract pieces formed from flow arts are instant gratification. “there’s not as much control. that’s the part i kind of like. i let it be, and it becomes a masterpiece that makes me happy,” she stated. Carlile’s oil paintings’ depths and unique colors epitomize her patience. the attention to details is captivating. her striking abstract creations embody uncommon color combinations that last in the mind’s eye long after the eyes have closed. Carlile enjoys learning new painting techniques and is constantly experimenting. She explained, “When i create art, it's almost like i'm in a therapeutic, colorful trance and just satisfies my soul. it’s helped me through some hard times.” Carlile concluded, “art is my calling. i hope to fulfill what god has given me and can’t wait to see what’s next.”

Texas Beer Enthusiast On Demand CO2 Delivery

Featured Brewer: MIKE FRIESE

Bakfish Brewing Company in Pearland

Favorite Texas brewed beer? That's tough but right now I might have to go with Moo Caliente from Eureka Heights. Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet

Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? Without a doubt Cheap Sunglasses.

What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? Here in Texas I have to say stouts. I grew up outside of Chicago so I drink them year round but here most people only like them when the temp finally goes down below 90.

Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? Oktoberfest in Germany since I've been able to do CBC and GAB

Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? Being a musician I'd say at a concert or of course on the patio in November

The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. Touring Musician.

Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. Take brewery tours, ask questions, homebrew as much as possible, and brew with other people so you can pick up as much information as you can. If you get the chance to work at a brewery don't be afraid to start low and work up. I started here as the delivery driver The state of the Texas craft beer scene is growing at a ridiculous rate and it's amazing

Favorite perk of working in a brewery is drinking my own awesome beer of course

Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is this Texas summer heat!

If you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? I'd say Urban Forest Craft Brewing in Rockford Illinois. It's owned and run by good friend Alex Cando who taught me most of what I know about brewing from when we worked at a homebrew shop together. The man makes absolutely amazing beer.

sCOTTY’s PuB ON The BAY the SCeNe’s Fb music splash said Six gun Keys was in the house. this was the first time i’ve seen this combination and was curious how these “texas gulf Coast rockers playing all your favorite ’80s Classic rock, including some alternative and Southern Fried boogie” would fare. No problem here!

Six Gun Keys @ Scotty’s Pub

A BiT OF ViNO - a couple months ago, we stopped into a live music friendly venue, Vino e Formaggio Cafe and thought a follow up would be appropriate… We look forward to someday having them fully on board. Until then, we checked out andrew bateman, the cheese plate and pizza. the food is knockout and bateman better than ever opening the evening with a classical Castilian style interpretation of classic beatles music. a safe to wager would be Sir paul enjoying the show, too. this evening, bateman was trying out a new guitar — one with a smaller body, and a much brighter than usual. this guy is dinner theater caliber… i haven’t Andrew Bateman @ seen many people buy a Vino e band’s CD in recent years, Formaggio but more than several Cafe were buying the music tonight. When can we expect another album? andrew says, “Soon. i’ve been working on my flamenco album for six years and really have a big pile of music built up and wasn’t quite ready as i needed time to build up the studio to capture the sound just right.” i think his music would sell well to the cross country motorbike riders - Free and easy with great tone and articulation... iT’s A WRAP - Summer has been a hot one, but we’ve missed out on the big storms which is fine. Word is that not everybody’s finished with their storm damage repairs to whom we wish the best. in the meantime, the live music was good in august with more spots hopping on the beat, the return of talent that’s been absent awhile, and creativity coming along nicely. remember to keep a copy of the SCeNe magazine with your for when friends stop by and need something to do. every show is a good show, and they’ll think you’re a genius. holiday season will be upon us soon, so make September your month! Cheers!!!

Sowflo @ Scout Bar

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 40

TOuR sTOP CLeAR LAKe - and reggae was on the ticket. actually an evening of gothic acid metal rock new wave reggae to be more accurate which was Sowflo brought to Scout bar for a stop on their summer tour. perhaps pushing this show even further over the top was their use of the trombone as an integral instrument for accents, solos and groove. opening for Sowflo was an equally eclectic reggae band, audic empire from austin, texas. these young musicians are extremely well schooled which they all credit to their parents, aunts & uncles diverse musical upbringings. When’s the last time you heard an aretha Franklin song sung to reggae? the over the top moment was a full stage jam with Sowflo, audic empire and our own Joe Serrato all on stage… Splendid! Audic Empire @ OPeN MiC - over the years, i’ve always enjoyed open mics where musiScout Bar cians can try out ideas, collaborate, or simply have a good time. each thursday night, the Cock-eyed Seagull has an open mic, hosted by angie emerson. Open Mic @ i understand she’s started Cockeyed an open mic at StuttgarSeagull den in Kemah. many performers i see here over the years have gone on to score gigs in the area on the bigger stages - it’s always good getting an ear on what’s in the works. if you’re a musician, give it a whirl! NeW sPOT ON The BeAT iii - Which would be rockey’s piano bar. this place is the place you read about in the august SCeNe and a worthy Matt & Zach @ replacement to the void left Rockey’s Piano Bar by the departure of Sherlocks in our area. i caught matt & zach on stage that evening along with a huge birthday gathering and more than several music lovers simply out to get their necessary dose of good live music. get yours, too!

Tuesday, Sept. 18

Vinyl Draught 35 - Country will be held at Preamble Lounge & Craft House (20801 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas 77598) on Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 7-9pm. Vinyl Draught is an upscale business networking event, without the pressure of selling or being sold to. Come out and enjoy some great Music and Draught Beer.

Hope to see you there, Amy Gernaat Robison and Aimee Ravichandran

Chatting with zach, work on their new CD is coming along well. the band keeps extremely busy throughout the region and they’re scheduled to appear again at the upcoming Lone Star rally. i’ve seen the other Swamp Shack on i-10 that is clearly designed to serve lots of food. they don’t have the view of the boats on the water that we do here - We got the better deal.

Zach Tate @ Crazy Alan’s

JACKie’s BRiCKhOuse - mixing things up a bit continues to be the mantra at the brickhouse, and we liked what we saw in august. reading the SCeNe’s Facebook splash on what was happening musically, i saw bC was scheduled to play at the brickhouse - my mind thought brian Carrion, bC…. Wait, what? the bC i remembered was an intense (LoUD & poWerFUL) electric show in a three piece band, starred in his own “real” music video production, went to Nashville to learn the BC @ ropes and went on to Jackie’s asia to see the world. Brickhouse Was this the same bC? this bC was nothing like that bC, playing a one person show with an acoustic guitar and keys (something i’ve NeVer seen bC play before), crafting loops on the fly into catchy arrangements so very much unlike the other bC, yet with an intelligence of invention that was the hallmark of the bC i knew. Still with me? technically impressive with as many as 8 parts working complete with passages and changing dynamics, the music was no longer an in-your-face statement of youth but a tasteful serving ranging from easy listening ’70s to hip hopping new wavey fusion funky looping reggae interpretations of the b-52’s. the bC i recalled played a heady style of music that required a degree of intellect to comprehend. this bC played a pure form of music capturing the muse of the brickhouse audience old and young. our area has been recovering from punches to the gut in several forms - many left to find their fortunes elsewhere leaving the area open for the taking. as my friend Lily said, those of us who stayed will welcome those who return with open arms. Welcome back!

That 70’s Thing @ Tookies

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 43

NeW sPOT ON The BeAT ii - the newly relocated tookie’s has a new patio deck with columns built for stout, as if they must know a thing or three about high water. a deck party was in order and which was the tookie’s anniversary party complete with staff was dressed in full ’70s hippie attire and that Robert Greaney 70’s thing gracing the stage. i think this place is on to something… this band fields a talented @ Crazy Alan’s lineup of pamela Saxon (lead vocalist), Chris Neman, mike mcCulloch, todd Fulks and Joe Cavazos (axe, keys, percussion, and bass/keys). i’m pencilling this band onto the list of bands that we will likely see someday on the big stage at the various community festivals along the 146 corridor. and for tookie’s, thanks for all the great meals and cheers to the years ahead!!! CRAZY ALAN’s sWAMP shACK i - With a successful season of rock the Dock under our belts, it was time to check other stops in the Lighthouse District. a stop into the Swamp Shack was in order where we found a patio full of diners along with Canadian football and the astros on the big screens — life was good. on stage was robert greaney and the live music simply made life much better. this was the third night we enjoyed greaney and each time, his genre playlist has rarely overlapped in terms of tone and content. in earlier shows, he would be predominately parrot head or ’60s electric rock. this evening, robert was delving into blues, Cash & beatles all with a country swing on his acoustic with such ease, you would think he was playing an electric. Keep greaney on your watch list.

Zach Tate @ Crazy Alan’s

CRAZY ALAN’s sWAMPshACK ii - a band that’s been keeping busy in the region that i don’t get to see that often, zach tate, was on the lineup at the Swamp Shack in august. these guys should be the house band in at least four places in the region and the Swamp Shack is one of them. We mostly associate tate and his full electric band playing at rallies and ice houses in the area. a nicely attended crowd came out to see tate and Lynn raggio on this school night — the night time patio crowd was out in force. Lynn and zach were playing a rare unplugged show and still managed to rock the patio and get the dancers dancing. this is a not often seen sight at the Swamp Shack. - Continued on Page 40

JJ Dynomite @ Katie’s Bar

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 45

CONFiRMATiON RuN - a couple months ago, we were tickled getting to see the return of JJ Dynomite, a three piece classic rock band from La porte and knew a return visit was in order and Katie’s, of course, was the place. back then, we had to drive around the block a couple times before finally finding a parking spot, so this time we arrived early. Word has definitely gotten out that these guys are back. this is a good thing, people, as they’ve a faithful following knowing there will be a good time wherever this band plays. there something about bands from La porte, they have a unique grit and energy that is force-of-nature quality. aside from playing their music well, they also were clearly enjoying being back on stage. You would think this band is deafening loud which is not the case. they simply play the music so well, you feel it is louder than it really is. honest… For now, you can catch JJ Dynomite at Katie’s and at the upcoming Lone Star rally. You’ll be glad you did. NeW sPOT ON The BeAT Which would be the bayshore grill & billiards where we stopped by for their grand opening. the place has been completely refreshed inside and out, upstairs and down providing the perfect venue for “entire” family dining. the upstairs floor is a cavernous billiard hall with full-size tables, ample lighting for proper aim, and a big reverberant room that’s well suited for live music. i felt this place had a good feel to it, and let me know if you feel the same. on this grand opening day, billiard players and friends were treated to Jared Waggoner who has played throughout the Clear Lake SCeNe. i remember countless hours in the billiard parlors listening to a jukebox and piped in 8-track music. there’s something about listening to live music while playing that makes incredible sense. more to come...

T-BONe TOM’s i & ii - it was about ten years ago this month i started covering live music at t-bone toms, about the same time ike came to town and left its mess. it seemed fitting to drop by on this Wednesday evening for Wood & Wind playing on the Landshark stage. Lots has happened in these parts in the past ten years. Cheers to the decade Wood & Wind @ ahead! T-bone Tom’s also in august, we stopped into tbone’s to check out the Southern Shanks band where mike has teamed up with rachel Walker, James Shabarekh (drums), michael poulos (bass) and matt peters (lead guitar). i’ve been enjoying watching this group retool and putting together a unique sound which they can call their own. this sound they’re working on is “truly” theirs. this evening, i was impressed with their new guy poulos (wondering if he’s related to Steve) and peters who has tastefully wired in dynamics to his showcase of blessed talent. Texas Flood @ Kemah Boardwalk’s Rock The Dock

Loose Notes i’m having trouble thinking we’re on the back stretch of 2018. this year is rolling fast! it must mean we’re having fun. Checking the action out on the SCeNe, i believe the answer is YeS!!! Let’s take it around the horn…

by Andy Eng

ROCK The dOCK - in august, we saw texas Flood, a Stevie ray Vaughan tribute band from Dallas. We’d seen this band before at Scout bar where they wore full costume which must have been misplaced for this show. We arrived as the band was into the Jimi hendrix and eric Clapton part of the playlist which raised cheers from the crowd. the audio throughout this year’s series was provided by michael Colby of Sound Sound. Colby has a way of making the big open-air sound sound even bigger. book him…. all in all, i score this year’s rock the Dock series as a success without any hurricane interruptions and consistent large crowds attending these free shows on the Kemah boardwalk main Stage — my vote for best show of the season goes also to the newcomer of the year, Diamond Jack. Cheers!

David Thomas @ Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar

RAiLeAN disTiLLeRY & BuCCANeeR BAR - David thomas from Denton came into town in august. thomas plays on tuesday’s at tbone tom’s and this was the first time we heard this old school balladeer at our favorite distillery on the planet in San Leon. this pairing was a perfect fit as were the refreshing vodka cocktails we enjoyed. a musician from the hippie era, thomas sang compelling ditties from arlo guthrie, buffalo Springfield, Lou rawls along with been there, done that assortments of parrothead music. better yet was his lineup of original story-telling songs to strike up one’s muse. this guy’s for real! thomas, a truly gifted musician, got the most notes out of the guitar neck i’ve ever seen in awhile, from his pinky to thumb with finger picking in between. the last time i heard acoustic guitar playing like this was from Steve Shannon and Don eisle. aside from the great songs, thomas passed along a note of relevance, that the musician pay has not changed since the ‘80s so the music you hear being played out live these days are by those who truly enjoy playing and worth listening to when you’re out listening...

NOAh’s ARK - Saturday night was poker night downstairs and the tomz Katz band upstairs in the parrots Nest overlooking on the bay. people pay a lot of money for this kind of view, and we have it here on the beat. a year ago, folks were hunkering in getting ready for harvey. this year was different as patrons were not to be denied this evening as they enjoyed tomz Katz on stage with the warm balmy galveston bay breezes — the breezes that many will be wishing for this upcoming winter.

Shimmy & Shimmer: Ladies Night Out at South Shore Harbour with Abbi Walker! By sarah Piña

Ladies, grab your girlfriends, anything with glitter, and get ready for a rocking poolside party at South Shore harbour resort! “Shimmy & Shimmer” is South Shore harbour resort and Conference Center’s first Ladies Night out this fall, hosted by texas musician abbi Walker who will fill the evening with her unique brand of “Southern soul.”

“there’s no charge, no cover, and it’s open to the public,” said adam Folden, Food and beverage manager of South Shore harbour. “it will take place by our oasis pool, and there will be a DJ as well as a full bar and food menu. this is a really unique event conceptualized by abbi,” he said of the first-time ever event, which has been a long time coming for abbi Walker.

“i have been in the texas music scene for a while, and i just feel like women are under-celebrated in the industry. i felt like this event was something that was needed. i thought that i would love to be able to build a night to celebrate the women i love and play my music. ‘Shimmy & Shimmer’ is about dancing, dressing up, and having fun. a girls-only event where women can really cut loose!” said Walker, whose music guarantees a non-stop party on the dance floor. a fourth-generation baptist preacher’s daughter who grew up in a musical family, Walker was playing piano and singing at the age of 3.

“When you go to church every week you’re exposed to live music each time, even though you don’t realize it. music has just connected with something in me my whole life. i grew up singing in church, took piano lessons, and eventually starting writing my own music and stepped out to do shows on my own. i did several gospel records, then started doing country,” Walker said, though she feels “country” doesn’t really adequately describe her sound.

“my music is texas grit, Southern soul, and spicy heart. it’s very eclectic. it’s a lot of soul and rock with a little country,” she said. - Continued on Page 42

Local Music Spotlight: Cooper Wade &

“Real Country Music”! By sarah Piña

Philip Anselmo & The Illegals Sunday, Sept. 9 SCOUT BAR

in the modern-day era of what is labeled as country music, it seems that pop, hiphop, and rap influences abound, particularly on country radio. as many of these contemporary crossovers and fusions are applauded and awarded, local country musician Cooper Wade and his sound are a definitive breath of Cooper Wade and his “real-countrymusic” hits Jackie’s Brickhouse fresh air—and while it is modon Friday, September 21 ern, the tribute to traditional country music permeates his recordings and live performances. “i like to call it ‘real-country-music.’ real country, and country music, and all three of those together, for a more traditional sound. my band and i pride ourselves on that,” said Wade.

this sound took root early on for Wade, who besides projecting that deep, melodic country sound through his vocals, played several instruments as well, all by a young age.

“When i was 6, i began to play piano, drums when i was 12, and guitar when i was 13. i come from a musical family. my dad was a trumpet player, and my mom was a choir teacher who also had a degree in music,” said Wade, who received a percussion scholarship to baylor University where he later earned a bachelor’s in music (percussion performance) with a minor in piano and voice. it was this time in college when Wade really began to take his talents to the stage. “When i graduated from baylor, i was doing studio work, but that ran opposite schedules with my wife, who was a teacher. So i started playing small venues for the fun of it, and it just kind of took off!” said Wade, who also takes pride in being a husband, father of four, as well as an owner and operator of a successful construction company. “i thought, well, if other people can make a living doing it, so can i.”

Wade’s prediction was right on mark. before long, he and his band, also known as Cooper Wade and Unclaimed Freight, found themselves opening for national acts such as billy Currington.

Chasin’ Tails is ALWAYS in Season! By shawn domingues

Chasin’ tails Sports bar and Cajun Cuisine is exactly what the name suggests. the marriage of these two concepts (Cajun cuisine and sports bar) is the brainchild of owners Ken and geri Wadsworth (who have experienced previous success in the restaurant industry in Colorado). Ken was transferred here by his employer in 2014, but after 34 years in the corporate world, decided he had had enough. he quit his job and he and geri opened the Cajun restaurant/sports bar they had been dreaming of. Chasin’ tails is known for their award-winning crawfish, but they have plenty to offer during “non-crawfish” season, too. With an extensive menu of homemade authentic Cajun dishes, as well as non-Cajun menu items, 24 beers on tap, five daiquiri machines, a full-service bar and 14 hDtVs to satisfy the sports fans, Chasin’ tails has something for everyone; it’s a great place for dinner with the family, lunch with coworkers, watching the game with buddies or meeting new acquaintances at this friendly neighborhood bar. the casual and fun atmosphere, along with the welcoming staff and their emphasis on customer service, are the reason they have many regulars who have become like family over the last four years. but the main attraction is the food!

Cajuns (like Ken who has roots in Lafayette, La.) take their food seriously, and they take pride in their specialty dishes as if they’re in some eternal Cajun cook-off.

the authenticity of Chasin’ tails Cajun cuisine comes from Louisiana family recipes that have been passed down for more than 100 years, with only slight variations. For example, at Chasin’ tails, the gumbo is boneless. they offer chicken and sausage gumbo to guests, plus their seafood gumbo is made to order. guests are able to choose what seafood they want from a list on the menu (like shrimp, crawfish, scallops, etc.)

at Chasin’ tails, everything is made from scratch with only the freshest ingredients of the highest quality. Ken’s motto is, “only the best is good enough,” especially when it concerns ingredients. While they source locally whenever possible, Ken and geri are also committed to providing the best quality ingredients and the most authentic Cajun food, they drive regularly to a Louisiana smokehouse to pick up the sausage boudin and Cajun pork they serve. they even use their own original recipes for condiments and sauces that are made fresh in-house, like their cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, country gravy and their ever-popular Cajun mustard that they serve with fried finger foods, like the fried shrimp, for dipping. their signature Cajun dishes are popular, but other customer fa-

although many Cajuns seem to be of the mindset that there are only two-and-ahalf seasons of the year – Crawfish Season, Football season and a few months of ‘having to do without’ in between; Chasin’ tails can shed some light on even the Cajun-ist of blackened hearts during those dark times. the “under $10” specials on their menu, served all day, 7 days a week. happy hour specials are offered daily for drinks and appetizers from 4 to 7 p.m. During football season, on Saturdays, Sundays and mondays, they have 50¢ wings all day (dine-in only, various flavors to choose from), plus $4 giant domestic draft beers. the Daiquiri Flight (2 samples from each of the five New orleans-style daiquiris) is offered daily for $9.99.

vorites include the Chicken-Fried Steak (large sirloin steak specially cut and tenderized five times, hand-dipped and fried to perfection, served with choice of homemade meaty country gravy or homemade jalapeño gravy, texas toast and choice of one side), the Seafood burrito (a 12-inch flour tortilla packed full of catfish, shrimp, crawfish and homemade dirty rice then smothered with choice of etouffée and/or cream sauce, comes with texas toast), or the thursday special, philly Cheesesteak Dip (ribeye roast cut in-house and slow-cooked for hours, served alongside onions, mushrooms, peppers and provolone cheese melted on a toasted NoLa style roll with au Jus for dipping).

Ken and geri believe in serving generous portion sizes. For example, the Sunday Special consists of Chicken-Fried Steak (topped with choice of meaty country gravy or jalapeño gravy), two pancakes, two eggs and a side of tator tots for $9.99.

but no matter how big the portions are, loyal customers know to save room for dessert, even if that means taking it to go. the Cajun-inspired dessert menu is sure to entice even the pickiest of eaters. all of the desserts are made from scratch. Customer favorites include bread pudding a La mode (homemade, bread pudding, topped with vanilla ice cream and smothered with their original recipe, warm rum sauce); beignets (four large beignets dusted with powdered sugar and your choice of dipping sauce: chocolate, honey, cinnamon or raspberry); Fried bread pudding bites (eight “bites” of their homemade bread pudding fried then dusted with powdered sugar, topped with homemade rum sauce) and Fried pecan pie (dusted in powered sugar). grab the family or gather your friends and head on over to Chasin’ tails. Don’t forget to tell them you saw it in the SCeNe.
