Clear Creek H.S. Graduate returns home as “TOP GUN” League City product ERIC DOYLE is Blue Angels Flight Leader (No. 1 Jet) & Commanding Officer When blue angels Flight Leader and commanding Officer eric C. doyle touches #1 (Jet) down on the runway at ellington airport this month, the League city native will be back home and in a very familiar place. Doyle, who graduated from clear creek high School in 1991 and went to texas a&m University on a swimming scholarship before leaving with a bachelor of Science (civil engineering) in 1996, is no stranger to the runway at ellington airport. his late father flew the F-4 Phantom with the air Force in Vietnam and later transferred to the texas air National guard at then ellington Field, which brought the entire Doyle family to the houston area when eric was 8. he would often accompany his father to ellington Field to watch him fly.

Soon after Doyle was hand-picked to lead the blue angels by a panel at Naval air Station Pensacola consisting of an admiral and nine other Navy officers who all once held the coveted position he sought, he was quoted in media saying “my motivation to become a pilot came from watching the blue angels. We used to watch (them) at the houston air Show,” Doyle explained.

before they are allowed to lead the blue angels, applicants must have at least 3,000 hours in the air and have already commanded a tactical jet squadron. Doyle's most recent assignment was as the commander of VFa-113, an F/a-18 hornet unit based in Lemoore, california. he has several combat deployments under his belt, supporting ground troops in iraq and afghanistan.

after college, Doyle went to Officer candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, where he was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy in December 1996. he was designated a Naval aviator in april 1999 and received orders to the “rough raiders” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFa) 125 at Naval air Station (NaS) Lemoore, california, for F/a-18c hornet training. his first fleet assignment was as a member of the “eagles” of VFa-115 where he flew the F/a-18c and F/a-18e and made two deployments on the USS abraham Lincoln (cVN 72) in support of Operations Southern Watch, enduring Freedom, and iraqi Freedom. in July 2003, he was selected to attend the Navy Fighter Weapons School (tOPgUN), where he remained as a staff instructor.

Upon completing his tour at tOPgUN, Doyle reported to the “ragin’ bulls” of VFa-37 at NaS Oceana, Va where he served as the training Officer and deployed aboard the USS harry S. truman (cVN 75) in support of Operation iraqi Freedom. Following his training Officer tour, eric reported to the “Valions” of VFa-15 as a Department head where he deployed on the USS theodore roosevelt (cVN 71) in support of Operation enduring Freedom. During his tour with the Valions he was selected as the 2009 LcDr michael hoff g. attack aviator of the Year. Doyle then received orders to the 422nd test & evaluation Squadron at Nellis air Force base in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he flew the F-22a raptor from February 2011 to January 2014 as an Operational test pilot. Doyle was then assigned as the executive Officer of the “Stingers” of VFa-113 in august 2014. he deployed with VFa-113 and cVW-17 aboard the USS carl Vinson (cVN 70) in support of Operation inherent resolve. he assumed command of the Stingers in December 2015 and led VFa-113 through the transition to the F/a-18e Super hornet. Doyle joined the blue angels in September 2017. he has accumulated more than 3,000 flight hours and has 600 carrier-arrested landings. his decorations include the meritorious Service medal, seven Strike/Flight air medal, five Navy commendation medal, a Navy achievement medal and various personal, unit and service awards. as blue angels commanding Officer, Doyle leads a squadron of 130 personnel and serves as the demonstration flight leader, flying the No. 1 jet. the blue angels perform for 11 million people annually across the United States and will perform 61 shows in 33 locations this 2018 season.

Wings Over Houston Airshow: Continued From Page 10

“We look forward to welcoming back the U.S. Navy blue angels and give a big welcome home greeting to commander Doyle of League city,” said airshow Director bill roach. “We’re also very excited to have one of houston’s most prominent corporate citizens, Phillips 66, join our show with an exciting performance by the Phillips 66 aerostars aerobatics team. We’re also honored to welcome back Sean tucker, an incredible pilot and supporter of our show, who is coming back to houston to give his last solo performance. the show also will feature modern military aircraft in the air and plenty on the ground for fans to get up close to them. the show will feature one of the largest assemblies of flying and static displays of vintage aircraft in the world.”

• Jack Links “Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco,” a 1929 taperwing Waco bi-plane outfitted with a jet engine flown, will be flown by veteran aerobatic pilot John Klatt. Tommy’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar Goes Through Major Transformation

By shawn domingues

tommy’s restaurant & Oyster bar, located at 2555 bay area blvd., has been a staple of the clear Lake community for 24 years. Owner and operator tom tollett has worked in the restaurant industry for close to 50 years. after overseeing the operations and expansions of several multi-million dollar establishments, tollett decided to go out on his own and opened tommy’s original concept (tommy’s Patio café) in 1994. Since then, the restaurant has evolved with the times and with tollet’s growing passion for food and commitment to outstanding customer service. in 2001, the restaurant was revived and renamed tommy’s Seafood Steakhouse, and in 2009 it became what it is today, tommy’s restaurant & Oyster bar. the concept is an elite oyster bar and seafood restaurant offering fresh from-the-bay oysters, gulf seafood, and prime cut steaks while providing impeccable service in a relaxed atmosphere.

tommy’s has been remodeled four times over the last 24 years, but with each remodel, there was a punch list of things they weren’t able to get done. the ideas have been percolating for the dream restaurant design for quite a while and, determined to get it all done this time, tollett hired a houston design firm to help turn the dream into reality. every square inch of the front of the house has been remodeled with a design concept that reflects the community and draws inspiration from the water that surrounds the area, and tollett is very pleased with the result, “the restaurant has become a much more fluid space, the colors and design are reflections of the water and our connection to the waterfront community,” said tollett. One wall in particular is an image from the inside of an oyster shell; an adjacent wall is a nautical map. New lighting, new flooring and new wall fixtures have all been carefully chosen to blend harmoniously with the mariner theme. the main dining area is now all one level providing a much more open feel.

the Oyster bar is still the main attraction in the new space and guests can watch the chefs as they shuck oysters, and since tommy’s serves around 10,000 oysters per week, these experienced chefs are fascinating to watch. tollett is serious about oysters. he is adamant about serving only the freshest oysters possible that are harvested using the most sustainable techniques.

When 75% of galveston bay’s oyster population was lost due to hurricane harvey, tollett was forced to buy

oysters from mississippi and Louisiana, but the oysters they sent him were spawning, making them more translucent and watery, so not only did they lack the flavor of a full-grown oyster, harvesting oysters while they’re spawning limits the amount of eggs they would otherwise release. (they can produce up to 100 million eggs per year, which can cause devastating effects to the oyster population.) this practice was definitely not in line with tollett’s commitment to sustainability – and he refused to serve them, opting instead to be out of oysters for a few months, tollett would much rather lose money not selling them, than serve an oyster that is subpar and not aligned with the conservation efforts he so proudly supports.

tollett’s passion for conservation serves him well as a board member for the galveston bay Foundation, a position he has held for five years. the foundation’s role is to advocate for galveston bay’s marine life, and the wildlife living along its shores, “and to create an environmentally safe and quality bay for all of us to enjoy,” said tollett. because he is highly involved in the foundation’s oyster shell recycling program, tollett ensures that every shell makes its way back to the bay so the population of oysters can continue to grow. Did You Know? Oysters are found all over the world; each region has its own unique shape, taste and texture. but tommy’s only serves oysters harvested in galveston bay. “Frankly, in my opinion, galveston bay oysters are the best oysters in the United States,” said tollett, always the consummate ambassador for the bay he holds so dear. but even the oysters in galveston bay differ in taste from the varying reefs (appellations). the amount of fresh water or salinity present in the area, the tidal flow and the mineral composition of runoff from the land above the reef all have an impact on the oyster’s taste. each spring, the galveston bay Foundation hosts an oyster tasting event at tommy’s, which allows guests to taste oysters from up to12 appellations.

What is your Background/experience? 10 years at Perry's Steakhouse (Kitchen manager). i opened two Perry's restaurants during that time. i spent 1 year at bubbas and 1 year at Legends, which i opened. i have lots of experience in different kitchens What is your specialty in the kitchen? my specialty is Steaks, brisket & ribs.

do you have a signature dish? i would have to say my Smoked ribs are my specialty.

Please elaborate or describe your smoked Ribs: they smoke for 6 hours with a special rub. also, during smoking i brush them with signature bbQ sauce. they are tender, fall off bone, juicy, amazing flavor and filling.

have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? Who/When/etc. many, but mike tyson at Perry's Steakhouse in 1997 and famous mexican actor Pablo montero at Perry's Steakhouse in 1996 come to mind.

Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: brush garlic butter on hamburger patties about 30 seconds before you remove from grill. that's gives enough time for flavor to soak in patty and gives the meat an amazing flavor.

Featured Artist: CHRIS FOREMAN

COMIC BOOK SUPERHERO By Kelley dawson Local comic book illustrator and advocate, chris Foreman is enamored by the storytelling process and how it can bring you into a different world where you escape the day to day of your life. “You get to simply observe someone’s story and sort of live life through their eyes. You get to essentially be someone else,” declared Foreman. he has always wanted to be a storyteller. Foreman told he found his voice with comics. he said, “i have been a fan of superhero comics and cartoons as far back as i have conscious thought.” Foreman shared he began drawing aquaman and Superman while watching Super Friends cartoon reruns. he mentioned, “my parents still have the original artwork stashed away somewhere.”

Foreman described his grade school self as the “kid who can draw really well,” and, therefore, excelled in art-based projects. he admitted, “With that came the adverse effect of getting in trouble for doodling in class when i should have been studying, but that's natural i believe.” Foreman’s art adventures continued through middle school and high school. “i found i could sell art to fellow students who wanted a Wolverine or Spawn sketch. i, of course, took to that. it was good money for an unemployed teenager,” he said.

Foreman proclaimed it wasn’t until his late 20s that he took his art talents seriously enough to pursue as a career. besides working on his own projects, he has worked as a sketch artist for numerous companies. Foreman disclosed that he is currently work-shopping projects that he will soon present to potential publishers. Foreman explained his illustration tools include various pencils and leads to create different softness. he also utilizes assorted pens such as microns and Pentel brush pens for inking the line work to establish line weights.

“Whenever i color i use various markers, but mostly Prismacolor markers. i appreciate that the right tools, when used correctly, can help to further flesh-out the image you are creating,” advised Foreman.

he expressed, “i love the chance to just create a snapshot of action or emotion and the chance to make something out of nothing.” he added, “i am able to use my art to evoke an emotion and make someone feel something. that's a huge honor to me.”

32ND HARVEST MOON REGATTA: OCTOBER 25-28

the largest port to port race in North america will celebrate 32 years this month when more than 150 sailing yachts gather in front of galveston’s Pleasure Pier for the start of a 150-mile race in open gulf waters to Port aransas. the harvest moon regatta is a US Sailing “offshore” regatta open to all racing cruising spinnaker and non-spinnaker sailing yachts with a minimum length of 27 feet. more than 150 boats are expected to race this year with close to 2,000 racers, friends and family attending the awards ceremony.

2018 SCHEDULE Entry Deadline Sunday, Oct. 7 • 5pm

Late Entry Cutoff Sunday, Oct. 14 • 5pm

Kick off Party Thursday, Oct. 18 • 7pm

Skippers’ Meeting Friday, Oct. 19 • 7:30pm

Laguna Harbor Head Start Party Wednesday evening, Oct. 24

First Start – Galveston Thursday, Oct. 25 • 2pm

Finish Deadline Saturday, Oct. 27 • 1pm

Welcome Sailor Rum Party Sat., Oct. 27 • 4:30pm (BBQ at 5pm)

Awards Ceremony Saturday, Oct. 27 • 7pm

Donuts and Coffee Sunday, Oct. 28 • 7:30am

the regatta is organJohn Ennis photo ized by bay access, a charitable organization supporting amateur racing. it is hosted by Lakewood Yacht club, city of Port aransas and mustang island. it is up for debate among sailors if they participate each year to win or more for the popular Welcome Sailors rum Party following the race in Port aransas and sponsored by bacardi.

What is not up for debate, is the tremendous growth of the regatta since the first year in 1987, when 17 yachts participated. Legend has it that one Friday night in the Lakewood Yacht club bar (following a long board of Director’s meeting), the often discussed topic “we need to use our boats more” evolved into “we need to sail offshore more.”

a few more barcardi drinks and some wild ideas followed that night, but unlike many ideas birthed at a bar and fueled by adult beverages, the concept of organizing a race to take place in the gulf of mexico did not fade away, but germinated into plans for an event to include as many sailors as possible for a late fall offshore sail. the idea was shared with houston Yacht club, texas corinthian Yacht club and the galveston bay cruising association, as well as the LYc board of Directors. after several meetings and lots of discussions it was determined that LYc would spearhead the effort and the harvest moon regatta was born.

“Hydro Therapy at Sea” with Sailing Angels

By diana L. Rodgers

One of the best things locals say about living in the clear Lake area is the opportunity to enjoy boating on galveston bay. another great amenity is the compassion and giving spirit of the people who live here. the members of Sailing angels Foundation have blended these features to create the only non-profit charitable organization in the U.S. that serves the special needs community, military veterans and many others in such a unique way by taking them on a free sailing excursion and immersing them in the joys of being on the sea! Sailing angels provides recreational therapy and education on both sailing and power yachts. While onboard, the participants enjoy a memorable experience of what the volunteers fondly call “hydro therapy,” an opportunity to experience the tranquility of being on the open waters of the bay, to learn about sailing, and to escape their condition for a little while.

Sailing angel’s founder, captain Dave mccabe, is a trans-atlantic sailor and a true humanitarian. his passion has inspired and transcended to the many volunteers who have joined his team. the numerous excursions Sailing angels performs throughout the year would not be possible without these amazing, dedicated volunteers. according to captain Dave, “Our volunteers may get as much satisfaction from this charitable service as do our 'special' patrons. We are truly blessed, being gifted with these skills and empathy, to 'pay it forward' in a very special way!” Long-term volunteers include Debbie hughes and Ken gallia, who serve on the board of directors, and who have been an integral part of their success.

Sailing Angels: Continued From Page 27 the organization now has over 130 volunteers, and a fleet of more than 35 power and sail boats. they have provided excursions for more than 15,000 participants since 2007. the majority of the guests are children with special needs and veterans who have suffered from the violence of military service.

recently they welcomed patrons from the Santa Fe high School tragedy along with first responders, teachers and their families. there are no restrictions; the organization serves everyone in the special needs community: all physical, mental and chronic illnesses and those “at risk” (e.g., low income, broken families, survivors of domestic violence) of all ages are welcomed. Patrons with autism often come with their families to sail. these have been some of the most rewarding experiences. the day occasionally starts out with the child being very reluctant to board the vessel to the point it appears the journey will not occur. however, after about 30 minutes, smiles appear and laughter fills the air as the children settle in. after the return to the docks, the kids do not want to disembark because they have had so much fun. Debbie hughes, chairman of the board and Founding Director says, “Parents tell me that the day spent on the water with the Sailing angels is the best day that their child has had all year. it is the best day for me, too, and i am happy to serve these families and to be a part of the wonderful family of Sailing angels.”

the adventures are on large boats – 35 to 70 feet long – and can accommodate five to 50 passengers. they are thankful for their experienced captains, skippers, and volunteer crewmembers who run all of the boats in their fleet, and they have a perfect safety record. Once everyone is on the boat, the sails are raised by the participants (with the captain’s assistance), and they begin to steer the boat under sail. While at the helm steering the boat, he/she is then the captain (i.e. “the boss”) and, therefore, gets to wear the captain’s hat. Sometimes dolphins appear during the journey. at the conclusion, the patron receives a medal of accomplishment and other awards. “the ocean has long had a healing effect on our 12-year-old son garrett. challenged with autism, the ocean gives the perfect amount of therapeutic input that his sensory-sensitive body needs. and there is never any mistaking what he is communicating with his shrieks and giggles: Sheer joy!” according to his mother.

Kayak Shack 622 Marina Bay Drive Kemah, Texas 77565 832-429-2094

military veterans are also a huge focus for the Sailing angels Program. the therapeutic benefits of these sailing excursions have been widely recognized by the Va hospital in houston, and include them as a part of their therapy program. When the veterans show up for their excursions on the boat, many are suffering from PtSD. Once onboard, each receives a stone from the Veteran’s advocate. When out to sea, the warriors are given guidance to think of a negative experience, person or tribulation that is troubling them. the advocate then instructs them to toss the stone into the bay and let that problem go, forever. guests have said it has been very cathartic and healing for them.

board member Ken gallia shared, “On my first experience, i was able to see firsthand what Sailing angels was all about, and what it meant to the child, the veterans, and the families they service. after one rewarding experience i was hooked. i have been a member of Sailing angels for the past 6 years. every Saturday, you will see me out on the water servicing needy families.”

Seabrook Youth Finished 14th in the World (1st of U.S. Sailors) at Laser Radial World Championships Lakewood youth sailor asher zittrer spent the better part of august in Kiel, germany training and competing in the 2018 Laser radial Youth World championships, where he took 14th overall and 1st among his american peers. Nearly 300 boys and 100 girls ages 19 and under were selected by their respective countries to be their country’s representatives in this event. in the U.S. those selections are based on the radial point system of the North american Laser association.

the US was allocated 15 spots at the championship based on the sailor’s point ranking from the year prior. U.S. Sailing further selected four young men as its official delegation to the event, providing high-level coaching and some cool U.S. Sailing team gear. zittrer was amongst that official delegation.

HYC Turkey Day Regatta Nov 17-18 • Galv. Bay

Sailors competed for six full days with no more than two races to be sailed each day on the open waters of the baltic Sea. conditions varied from mild to a water spout on the water which tossed around a few boats on the last day and wind from nearly all directions over the course of the week. at one point in the event, asher held 8th overall, but could not hold onto his top-10 spot in the final challenging days of gold Fleet racing. Out of 11 races finished, he took 14th place overall and was the top american boy. the club congratulates asher for his hard work in advancing the Lakewood burgee! Harvest Moon Regatta: Continued From Page 26

the first regatta was designed to run for about a week, sailing from the galveston jetties to Port isabel for race #1, then back up the coast to Port aransas as race #2. then there was Port aransas to inside the galveston jetties for race #3 and on to the Seabrook marker two for race #4. Seventeen yachts sailed that first year. in year two (1988), the regatta changed forever when hurricane gilbert blew away the facilities in Port isabel. thus began the tradition of sailing to Port aransas under a magnificent full moon each October.

thanks to mother Nature and hurricane gilbert, the harvest moon regatta steadily grew from the 17 yachts of 1987 to more than 260 yachts in recent years. this was due in large part to the perfect destination, Port aransas. this ideal texas port allows yacht owners and sailors to use minimal days from work to join in on what can be a most memorable overnight sail down the texas coast during what is traditionally, the best offshore sailing time of the year. For further information, please check the race website at www.harvestmoonregatta.com.

COCK-eYed seAGuLL OPeN MiC - it was ten years ago after ike when this local live music haven provided music lovers refuge from that storm and the Open mic sessions at the cock-eyed Seagull was the place. these days, the new guard of angie emerson along with Francisco are stewards of the tunes with these weekly open mic sessions. i must confess to readers that my day time life these days keeps me from properly enjoying this late night session (and others on the live local Scenes) as the musicians often don’t arrive until after the swing shift lets out. these people are truly full of life, invention, and spirit. i’m keeping pulse on this best i can as many who stop in to perform at this Open mic have gone on to play on the big stage. Don’t worry if such a trail is not in your books. if you’re a local college professor, aerospace engineer or an everyday music lover need-

ing to give it a whirl, come on out to the cock-eyed Seagull Open mic and give it a whirl! if you’re not wanting to play but to discuss topics such as capo theory, inverted chords, and songwriting, this is your spot too!

iT’s A WRAP - September was super on the live music front! thanks to the SceNe’s weekend live music guide (via e-mail and social media), we were able to catch some really good shows and better yet, had a great time catching up with many you out there. thanks for sharing your stories and tales of your challenges! Our best days are ahead. Speaking of which, tis time to be rooting for our hometown baseball team. that, and remember, that for our hometown pro football team, there’s nowhere to go but up! and speaking of up, summer is in the rearview mirrors, meaning that patio season lies ahead which is always one of our favorite seasons on the SceNe. See ya out there!

“i want to say this might be the first Japanese alternative/pop punk artist we’ve had in the club,” said belmarez. “but this one should be off the charts also. these guys are more up my alley for sure. i am super excited about this one!”

“i told him we would end up being best friends,” tres said. “he was like, no we’re not and was dismissive. and, he we are today.”

Finally, Skyharbor will round out the global rock scene for the month at Scout on October 18. an indian/american band which counts groups like the Deftones as influences, Skyharbor is composed of members from New Delhi and mumbai, india, as well as cleveland, Ohio, and has been rocking stages with their unique brand of progressive metal since 2011.

“it’s always great for the Scout bar crowd to see something they like, but with little bit of a twist, and something different. i don’t know if people see or know how diverse Scout bar is, but we go from brazil to Japan and india within months with all of these upcoming acts,” belmarez said.

With such a variety of global acts descending on Scout bar in October, it’s time to start planning several nights out with eclectic live music—and when you go, make sure to tell them the SceNe sent you!

he knew he wanted to create with Jacob.

Sol Flair band members include Joshua Lewis (drums), Damen turner (lead guitar), tres Page (bass and lead vocals) and Jacob casas (guitar and lead vocals). covering original songs has allowed Sol Flair to continue their passion for music all over the houston area, including venues like cabo, Jackie’s brickhouse, barge 295, the Kemah boardwalk and more. but they recently began creating original music that will continue to peak their fan’s interests. Songs like Feel the Love, astroworld and Four on the Floor can be heard on Spotify. “We have a lot of versatility, and we want our album to reflect that,” tres said.

their original songs continue the blending of sounds with deep house, drum techniques, an african vibe drum with a tribal dance in between, some Lil Jon and coldplay influences. talk about a unique range!

You can see Sol Flair and all of their finesse at Jackie’s brickhouse on halloween, Oct. 31. tell them the SceNe sent you.

LABOR dAY shOW - Local lore tells of The hunger’s Labor Day Shows as legendary. they were “quite the party.” Over the years, early day attendees have drifted away with obligations such as starting families of their own. While it’s always good seeing many familiar faces at this annual show (many who had to miss out on last year’s show after harvey) along with a steady stream of new faces in the crowd. i was once a new face myself and a part of the pattern which Wilson muses, “it’s great seeing the half of you that have been coming to our parties all these years and also to the half of you The Hunger @ Scout Bar all out there that weren’t around or would understand what we were doing back then, and that’s cool.” indeed...

Personally, i don’t think the Wilson brothers are capable of aging. the hunger shows are always strong, never repetitive by being able to draw from a deep library of material and always gets the house singing along with their plethora of hit anthems. Not often mentioned is that these shows always seem to have along a special cause. this year, it was the houston Zombie Walk and The Purge Party raising scholarship money for area teachers who otherwise would be spending dough out of their own pockets to make better the learning experience for many of you folks with kids in class. great job to all those who pitched in. We caught Black Market Tragedy for the warm up act although this band is fully capable of headlining the local scene on their own. With solid act in the bag, it would be great to see if this local group can come up with some hits they can call their own and see them make it on the national. they’re “hometown,” texas, and are their own show... - Continued on Page 36

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 40

Last year, we caught Bryan shayne on the Singers & Songwriters slate and put him on our watch list. in September, we caught Shayne at Crazy Alan’s swampshack serenading the Bryan Shayne late-night, school-night @ Crazy Alan’s dinner crowd. Like axelson, my belief if that this were the ‘70s, Shayne would be touring nationwide.

The heALeRs - in September, tiger Woods won for the first time after a long time. those following along recalls the gauntlet this phenom had been The Healers through. Watching his @ Katie’s final day round, it was evident there was a massive amount of support from the gallery and players cheering Woods on. Not quite exactly the same but with the same heartfelt spirit, a full house gathered at Katie’s for an evening with The healers. the new man on the six string is area veteran steve hitt. i’ve seen hitt perform over the years with the classix but was even more wowed with his performance with tommie Lee bradley’s band opening for the Little river band. Solid, tasteful, and even Verlander’ish in command of the music. the healers called on hitt to fill in back in July while Luther was still with us.

i’m typically not a writer who always writes down the songs a band plays and my memory of its name is at the moment fleeting ... What i do recall was it was a rock solid simple bluesy number with plenty of solid solos on the keys and strings, the perfect opening number to dial in the levels on the sound system (which i believe more bands should open do). at the end, you could see everybody in the band with an ear to ear “we got it!” grin and the show was one.

With Luther now singing as the new guy in his new band of angels, drummer (Scarface, KC Cartwright) did a masterful job picking up more of the healers lead vocal spots with help from the entire band and shined through with a bright and delightful presentation compared to the soulful smoky raspy voice people remember of Luther.

i recognized many in the audience. these were long time fans of Luther and the healers and their giveaway was their love of dancing. the band was clearly happy to be playing. i can understand why... one thing i notice is if the band is intense, so is the crowd. Similarly it the band is having fun, so goes the house. Fun live music is good. the healers…. Keep them on your party ready watch list… Speaking of watch list….

The Dope Show @ Scout Bar

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 41

The dOPe shOW - We’ve been covering tribute bands enough to know that there are tribute bands, and then there are ‘tribute bands!’ Practically all of the tribute bands i’ve heard are at least capable of playing the music with acceptable fidelity. but better tribute bands also carry forth a visual personna resemblance of the band honored. Further yet, in my opinion, over the top ‘tribute bands’ are those capable of playing the music as if it were their own. in September, we caught the Dope Show, a tribute to Marilyn Manson at scout Bar. holy moly!!!

according to the band, “houston’s erase the Virus is jumping on the tribute bandwagon to present to you ‘the Dope Show - a tribute to marilyn manson.’” Since original bands don’t get payed and tributes/cover bands make all the cash, why not make a tribute band of one of our favorite artists and make some $$$?

People, i’m not really much of a marilyn manson follower, but the Dope Show “really” did this one well. Perhaps the closest i can connect the dots is that this show had me flashing back to the alice cooper’s ‘Welcome to my Nightmare’ tour. my only suggestion would be to go easier on the fog machine for better photos; otherwise, a believable well-done effort!

PiRATes & POeTs - Jon Burns and T-Bone Tom’s has been carrying the Pirates and Poets show for the past several years. in the month of September, we caught a great evening with Brett Axelson, Ben Reyna and don Vickers for clever thoughtful muses. i had thought ben had retired. it turns out he’s actually able to get out and play more these days. Vickers is a solid writer that can pull out some “stop what you’re doing and pay attention” material. i’m looking forward to axelson. i’ve heard several of his numbers back when he wrote with rat ranch. if we were in the 70s, they’d be on the road and nationwide. in towns like austin, series like this would be televised and broadcasted on the PbS channel. Supporters of live music is one thing and those supporting the songwriters are special. Jon is busy putting together more great events. Keep your eye out for them! Folks: Patio season is upon us and it should be good. - Continued on Page 39

Loose Notes it’s real people… While we had lots of rain in September, we made it without getting whammied by a hurricane - unlike the poor souls in the carolinas. We got gypped out of patio season evenings, but that’s okay. the live music was simply superb! Let’s run down some of what all went down...

by Andy Eng

diAMONd JACK - i’ll cut to the chase: this band is on my “New Local bands of the Year” list. they made the rock the Dock circuit this year with authority — quickest of any band Diamond Jack @ Jackie’s Brickhouse i’ve seen in quite a while! these guys arrive, each individually qualified to be considered a ringer, include: Paul Byron (Keyboards, guitars, Vocals); Kent Newman (guitars, Vocals); Rob Jacobs (guitars, Vocals); scott Madigan (bass, Vocals) and stacey steele (Drums, Vocals). Do the math: We’ve got a band that can pull off a five-part vocal harmony and lead on any instrument.

Diamond Jack plays the “classic rock” numbers you don’t often hear and met my challenge i issued months ago, seeking a band able to play the outro to hotel california as convincing as Walsh and Felder. Not only did Newman and Jacobs do so, Jacobs did so with an Sg speed guitar and playing it like it should be played making him the Felder of the group. in the words of my predecessor, the late James Shortt, bravo!!! i’ve watched bryan over the years, and with Diamond Jack, discovered his talents are deep and wide. his efforts on elton John material is convincing and what i’ll bet listeners are craving to hear. more please? madigan and Steele consistently held down the ever so important groove with the proper grip allowing the songs to properly flow as if it were a 235 yard 2 iron shot landing ready for birdie. hope that makes sense… Pass the word: this band is good! ROCKeY’s PiANO BAR - i visited the place for the first time last month and a follow up was in order. this place has a recipe for fun that works. With simply a duet of Mike and Zach on piano and drums, the house was singing and partying as if they were an east coast irish band. the crowd was noticeably larger the evening in September that we saw them, so word is getting out. eyeballing the action, lines to get into rockey’s can be a possibility someday. back to the music. the playlist was a Mike and Zach @ hUge messy assortment of requests with Rockey’s Piano Bar money attached which ventured into all sorts of genres while i was there. to borrow word from music guru, andy Upchurch, this place is ideal for afterwork parties, birthday parties, divorce parties, bachelorette parties, “i got a promotion party” and perhaps even perhaps an “i got fired this week party?!?” the majority of the crowd knew how let their Ya Ya’s out and only a few where acting like this was their first sock hop. rockey’s Piano bar - i call this place good to go!

Vino e Formaggio Café sets the stage for wine lovers By shawn domingues

Vino e Formaggio café, located at 20801 gulf Freeway (Suite 25) in Webster, is both the name of the venue and its description in italian. translated to english, it means “Wine and cheese café.” Nestled in the corner of the bayway Village Shopping center (off of the interstate-45 feeder), Vino e Formaggio is the perfect afterwork or date-night destination. With its close proximity to two movie theaters, it’s easy for couples to complete the “dinner and a movie” scenario and have a couple glasses of wine as well. the ambience at Vino e Formaggio is warm, cozy and inviting – as if you were stepping into someone’s living room. Owner michael Limanni, whose attention to detail can be seen in every aspect of the business, meticulously designed the space and did much of the build-out on his own. From the bar to the kitchen, to the table settings and the bathrooms, and all points in between, everything has been well thought out – including the sound system and acoustics, which allow guests to carry on a conversation without having to raise their voices above the weekend live music.

Outsider Tip: There is additional parking around the back of the building accessed through the roadway between the shopping centers. Look for the number 20801-25 ViNO on the outside of the door.

"Vino e Formaggio was designed to mirror an inviting home in which people can gather and communicate without the distraction of televisions or flashing neon advertising on the walls," said Limanni.

With his background in theater, it’s no wonder that ambience is of the utmost importance to Limanni. he explained he once visited a hotel bar in chicago, which was reminiscent of the post-prohibition bars of the 1930s, and described how he had been immersed in the retro setting until he got to further into the establishment. “there was a tV directly over the bar, and it was so disappointing to me. they completely ruined the experience,” said Limanni.

at Vino, there are no table tents on the tables and no jukebox in the corner. guests are encouraged to engage with each other by playing one of the many board games that can be found in the bookcases and on the coffee table. the attention to detail comes with the intention of creating and maintaining that living room-feel where friends can be comfortable and connect with one another. During weeknights, Vino hosts various events such as a monthly bunko game (with proceeds going to a local animal rescue charity), trivia Night, and a winerelated arts and crafts night. Wednesday is Open mic night for local musicians with live music on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. (arrive early to avoid the kitchen rush) performed by experienced musicians such as chambers and constable, Kevin Fenton, and guitarist greg Stephens. Vino also offers a monthly wine class with detailed information about the various grapes and the regions where the vines are grown. and yes, guests also get to drink the wine while they are learning about it. check Vino e Formaggio’s Facebook page (@vinoeformaggiocafe) for information on upcoming events.

Insider Tip: stop by on the way home from work to take advantage of the happy hour 50 % off select wines (Tuesday through Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.)

theSceNemagaziNe.cOm

Like a long-running theatrical play, Vino e Formaggio appeals to a wide audience. the ambience is the setting, Limanni is the director and playwright, the food shares the spotlight as costar, but the wine is the star of the show. With a wine list that’s sure to impress even the most discerning of wine connoisseurs, it could be possible for this wine bar to receive a standing ovation. Limanni is Level One WSet certified, and his expertise guided him to carefully select each of the 60+ bottles of wine. the state-of-the-art wine cooler ensures that the wine is stored at the proper temperature. every open bottle is preserved with nitrogen at closing to ensure it is as fresh as can be for the next patron. the expansive wine list includes wines from italy, France, australia, chile, and the United States with varying price points ranging from $8 per glass to $69 per bottle. For those who join their wine-loving companions, but don’t particularly love wine, there are several beers on tap as well as bottled selections. - Continued on Page 36

Sol Flair creates blended beats & hyped up party vibes By Twila Lindblade

Sol Flair loves lighting up the room with their positive energy and diversified sound at each of their shows. their goal is for their music to bring the crowd to their feet and onto the dance floor – and leave their fans wondering what’s next! Party-goers won’t hear the same songs at every show or even the same genre!

Sons Of Texas

Saturday, Oct. 20

From avicii to Drake to Simple minds and everything in between, Sol Flair aims to surprise crowds with deep melodies and hyped-up party vibes.

SCOUT BAR

“We play super contemporary music, some pop and even sometimes country,” said tres Page, vocalist and bass player. “Our lead singer, Jacob is influenced a lot by trent reznor, audio Slave, alice in chains, but we tend to listen to all-new music. there are some songs we are really eager to play and we have a large playability.” Sol Flair has a comfort level with one another that allows for a relaxed dance on stage. Dedicating time to their passion has helped create that dynamic.

“We play together at least three or four times a week and see each other more than our own families at times,” tres said. “Ultimately, we’re just dudes hanging out and everyone does what they’re supposed to and loves.” Sol Flair has been making music together for almost three years. their ability to appeal to different age groups and to blend different music styles has helped create their large fan base. they also have a flare for creating mash-ups from songs you might hear on the radio, but with their own flavor. “We can play music in a way that you have a new found respect for,” he said. “there’s a Post malone mash-up that we do that’s 12 minutes long, and it’s really cool blend,” tres said.
