To key West and back: Mark Lum Returns with “Good Things Are Coming” Tour!
By sarah Piña
Popular area musician mark Lum has returned to texas—and in a big way! Lum, also known for the 3-piece rock/reggae band alvin and the Slickpunks, will be on tour throughout clear Lake, Kemah, and galveston all throughout December.

Saturday, Dec. 8
“i spent a lot of my time travelling back and forth between Key West and Pasadena growing up, but it’s great to be back,” said Lum. this time spent in both places, however, has been a big influence on his craft, especially Key West.

“my Dad, who l would visit in Key West, was a musician too. though i grew up listening to a lot of punk rock and metal, i became really intrigued by what he was doing and his style of music. So i started to pick it up with him, after he got me a guitar from a pawn shop. he’s the one who really taught me,” he said, recalling memories from when he was younger.
“i’ll never forget the first time he taught me to play ‘hotel california.’ he taped my fingers to the guitar so i would learn a certain chord,” he laughed. “also, anytime i would get grounded, everything from t.V. to video games would be taken away—but he always left the guitar in the corner. that’s just the kind of guy he was.”
Saturday, Dec. 8
“i just decided i would rather be back here at home with all of my family and friends,” said Lum, who currently has a free self-titled album on reverb Nation. and area fans and venues couldn’t be more happy and enthusiastic for his return, which is reflected by his recent nomination for best acoustic Performance for the Support Local music awards taking place at Scout bar later this month, along with a packed tour schedule for December— as well as the big news that alvin and the Slickpunks (complete with Lum on vocals/guitar, Jeremy mallatt on bass, and michael calvert on drums) would be reuniting when they open for metalachi at Scout bar in December.
Guitar Collective III
Sadly, Lum’s father passed last year shortly after hurricane irma, when Lum also lost everything from his house to his guitars in the storm. it was then he decided he would return to his texas home base with his daughter to keep pursuing his music.
“if you’ve never seen one of our shows, we just really like to twist everything up. if there’s a song you know from the radio, it’s not going to be that version. it’s going to be original-sounding, with our own version, our own spin on it. We’re coming back fresh with a new sound, and lots of energy that always seems to spread at our shows,” Lum said, who in turn describes his solo music shows as folky and acoustic, and very much a freestyle mix of country, rap, and reggae vibes.

“We are just trying to play and have fun. the dancing, mingling, having a good time in general— that’s what it is about for us,” he said.

Come Celebrate at Scotty’s Pub – from every Day to the Holidays!
on the bay
By sarah Piña
every night is a fun night to celebrate at Scotty’s Pub on the bay—and with even more reason during this holiday season!
Since the new and improved relocation of the then sevenmonth-old South Shore location less than two years ago, area residents have enjoyed a larger pub, a beautiful patio and an outdoor bar with a stunning water feature that combines both fire and water. this atmosphere—combined with live music events and innovative eats paired with perfectly crafted drinks—have made Scotty’s one of the most unique venues in the area.
“We are a place to take a nice date, but also have a really fun night out with friends with the live music we have, plus DJs and our food and drink menu. We are a place to go and ‘be seen’—but also left alone, if you’re in the mood for a more relaxed atmosphere. it’s just a really nice, warm place to go,” said Scott Sexton iii, owner and manager of the pub.
indeed, every monday night Scotty’s Pub on the bay hosts the wildly popular mama cass Karaoke, as well as live music every thursday, DJs on Fridays and Saturdays, and specials each day for food and drinks. the expertise of Scott and his staff, moreover, speak to a great night out with a special someone.
“Some people may be surprised to see a pub with a really sophisticated wine list. my dad and i went to school for wine, and all three of us owners went to the culinary school together, so we are really passionate about it all,” Sexton said, referring to his dad (Scott Sexton Jr.), and friend Quinton turner. (Sexton iii actually now teaches at that same culinary college.) “We listen to everyone who comes in, too. For example, if you mention how good chili sounds one day, don’t be surprised if it pops up a few days later as the special!” he said. - Continued on Page 44
Publisher’s Note: a ‘craft’ is a profession that requires particular skill and knowledge. and the professional use of ‘Skill’ and ‘Knowledge’ is exactly what i think of when it comes to Scotty’s Pub on the bay. and it all starts with its namesake, Scott Sexton iii. who long dreamed of opening a place of his own and now, along with his talented partners, has two locations. Scotty has a degree in both music and culinary arts (food) and is a certified Level 2 Sommelier (wine) and cicerone (beer). he started in the service industry at age 18 and has never stopped learning or sharpening his skills. it takes just one look at the food or drink menus to see hints of his knowledge, experience, creativity and attention to detail. order and enjoy something off those menus and the full impact quickly becomes clear. but take a minute to visit with Scotty, and you will be instantly sold by his passion to share the delicious product of his skill and knowledge with his guests. - John ennis 47 |

Loose Notes
The Spazmatics @ Scout bar
Did this year go by fast? must mean we had lots of fun! Seasons greetings, good People! November was a fabulous month out on the SceNe and the live music was better than ever. before we take things into the New Year, let’s run down some of what all that went down:
by Andy Eng
NeW OLd sTOCK - one of the funnest bands that comes into town is the Spazmatics, a spoofy ‘80s band that many simply love. in fact, Spazmatic fans go yaya over this band like no others. this group stops by regularly at Scout bar (who always knows how to book shows) and always packs the house with Spazmatic regulars.
i first covered the Spazmatics ten years ago when i started out covering the SceNe and a checkup visit was in order. much to my surprise, frontman al is no longer with the group and has been replaced by the youthful zeek, who looks strong enough for at least a million miles. Filling in for bjorn, on the Les Paul and marshall, this evening was Lester and so the show goes on, not missing a beat. over the years, i’ve come to notice that a Spazmatics show is much like a rocky horror Picture show not exactly in terms of content, but in the audience participation chiming in on cue with the band. crazy zany fun! With the holiday season upon us, may i suggest bringing your out-oftown guests to Scout bar and Pub Level. they’ll not only have the chance to catch high energy show up close on the Scout bar stage, but you’ll also get the chance to catch up on times, upstairs at Pub Level. cheers!

black Dog with Nicholas Connors on guest vocals @ Jackie’s brickhouse
NeW LOOK - the renovations are coming along well at Jackie’s brickhouse and just in time for the holiday Season. this place is good to go for entertaining your out-of-town guests. in November, along with a perfectly packed house, Jackie’s brickhouse brought in a couple new acts from outside of our clear Lake area. We were able to check out black Dog (a Led zeppelin tribute band) and Vht (Van halen tribute). What i like about your typical Led zeppelin fan is how they like their hair long and have the highest per capita of those who know every song by heart. What i like about black Dog was how well they took care of Led zeppelin fans opening the show with the immigrants Song and later played a refreshing rendition of Kashmir along with the other great Led zeppelin classics. invigorating…. as was Vht, a very straight forward bunch having as their basic interests “Van halen, Van Frickin' halen, Frickin' Van halen!” if you liked Van halen, especially during the David Lee roth years, this is your Van halen tribute band. got it? We’ve a New Year coming and Jackie’s brickhouse has a new look. come on out and get yourself into a new game in 2019. got it? - Continued on Page 41

NeW sTOP ON The BeAT - and that would the boldthouse on NaSa road one in Seabrook. this cozy hideaway, complete with a full menu and wide selection of libations, is a live music friendly venue having just completed their 10 week texas Songwriters Series. open Mic @ The boldthouse on a Sunday afternoon in November, we checked out their open mic hosted by Kevin Fenton and got totally treated with a steady stream of area musicians stopping in to share song. the acoustics at the boldthouse carries a bright crisp timbre that sparkles and with the hwy.146 expansion project coming near, this is a great place to hide out. if your holiday guests includes the need to get out of the house for some singing and strumming, put the boldthouse’s open mic on Sundays at 5pm on your schedule. Mark Lum @ sNOWBiRd seAsON - is synonymous with patio season which is our special Crazy Alan’s time of year we treasure on the SceNe. in November, crazy alan’s Swamp Swamp Shack Shack was the place and mark Lum was on the stage. Since his return with his newfound approach toward the music, Lum scores solid connections with his listeners with his gift of heart and wit delivered with lyrical improv you’ll be hard pressed to find. better yet, word is that mark is putting a band together in time for the holiday season. With friends and family in town and needing something to do, catching mark and the band could be just the homecoming. Keep your eyes peeled. it should be crazy fun...
ONe OF OuRs - heads up good people! the annual international blues challenge is happening in memphis in January and houston's representative, mark may, is our guy! Let's all pitch in and help mark out this trip, please? to help cover expenses, Katie's will be hosting a special fund raising show on December 16 from 3-5 p.m. before the regular Sunday Jam. come on out and catch mark may and the band during this special show and let’s chip in what we can to support our man. got it? thank You!!! - Continued on Page 40

The sTReAK - my resolution for 2019 will be to stop in to catch the plethora of known proven musical at Katie’s in bacliff. None-the-less, i was able to reach the two-year mark where i’ve been stopping in at Katie’s on nights when i’ve not heard the act, and left totally impressed. Don’t know who’s playing there? Doesn’t matter. it’s going to be a JW Jones @ good show, katie’s bar and remember at Katie’s, there’s never a cover. in November, i saw for the first time, JW Jones, the veteran maple blues award-winning ottawa bluesman. in the words of 7times grammy award winner, buddy guy, “this young man is one of the people who will keep the blues alive.” Props to the blues hound, James Nagel, for continuing to team up with bob and Katie, bringing in the finest of blues from across the continent into our neighborhood.
as for JW, i was impressed with his creative blues improv. throughout a song, Jones bends tempo, volume, and tone (using a Kempner digital modeller) into jazzy trances taking the ears and head into places unknown that will never be played again. another way to describe his sound is that of a tasteful tornado with snappy clever endings. Speaking of songs….
Jones is quite a prolific writer with 10 cDs under his belt. i scored his last five which were produced regularly on 2 year intervals. his latest, JW Jones Live, was in line with what lured me to the live music scene a cleanly captured recording of vibrant energy one can only find from the live music stage.
“i cranked up my overdrive in concert one night for fun, and it opened up this new world of ideas for me,” admits Jones, “i felt a new sense of freedom.” the holidays are upon us and if you’ve out of town guests itching to check out the live music scene, give Katie’s a shot Your guests will think you’re cool…

PATiO seAsON - Was the SceNe at t-bone tom’s with the Pee Wee bowen band gracing the Landshark Stage. When i first arrived on the SceNe, live music would taper along with the thermometer mercury but these days, music lovers young and old get to enjoy an extended patio season under the t-bone tom’s huge enclosed palapa. Pee Wee bowen is proven area favorite with a massive loyal following and has not let down one iota. With the holiday season upon us know that the folks at t-bone tom’s can handle your hungry gang and with their everstrong live music lineup and plenty of sports on the tube, your guests will make “you” their most favorite one to visit - cheers!
iT’s A WRAP - they say things happens cycles… i arrived in the area twenty years thinking my stay here would be short. ten years ago, a door opened in my life and i discovered this wonderful place called the SceNe, a vibrant place on earth with great food, fun libations, super live music and best of all, lots of really fantastic people. thank you for taking time to share your story. zooming in on the one year cycle, i hope everybody finds that moment of joy and peace that comes with the season: Not everybody i’ve visited with in 2018 has recovered from the ruins of harvey. also, many of you shared of starting new chapters or being near suffering. For all of you and all of us, auld Lang Syne is around the corner - may 2019 be our year…. Deal? all the best and we’ll see you out there, out on the SceNe!

mcguire decided to keep writing songs. he also sold his yacht brokerage and opened another art gallery. While running this gallery, mcguire met an artist who enlightened him on “plein air” or painting outdoors with natural light. it is a well-known style of French painter claude monet. mcguire’s enlightenment turned into remarkable talent. he won a spot at the prestigious taos, New mexico oil Show and his first painting to win an award is in the permanent collection of the bosque county art conservatory in clifton, texas. Yet, mcguire again shyed away from painting knowing how hard it is to make a living with art having run two galleries. “i knew how to make a living at music,” he said.
mcguire thought he’d quit art for just a few years to pursue more radio play. a couple of years turned into 14 years of dry brushes and empty canvas. he revealed, “i did the same with music as i did with art for fear of failure. i opened a gallery as a young man instead of painting. i entertained for 25 years instead of writing my own songs.”
mcguire began travelling the Northwest about six years ago to paint mountains and other landscapes. he paints primarily with oils as it’s the most common medium for plein air style.
mcguire explained, “the point of plein air is to paint what is there, not what your mind and eyes see. they will trick you. You must isolate values and colors. it’s critical to concentrate on relationships between shapes and temperatures.” he added, “You’re painting the light not the subject. You won’t see every little line, bug, or

he shared, “[hurricane] harvey slowed me down again, but now i am ramping back up. i saw ‘brushes by the beach’ event and was motivated to get outside and smear some paint around.”
mcguire described his latest award-winning piece, “Painting one boat is hard. Painting four boats is even harder. gauging the values, shadows, temperatures of the colors and it finally develops into something. it’s very motivating. i took my final work to the show. i was surprised and honored to get any recognition.” mcguire expressed similarities in music and art, “Staring at a blank piece of paper or looking at a blank canvas and knowing i have to create something. there is anxiety thinking you will fail and sometimes you will. but after doing enough of it, the percentage of attempts develops into something good. it’s fairly normal actually.” mcguire divulged another fear of artists and songwriters is no longer being relevant. he shouldn’t have to worry much. his paintings are as prolific as his song lyrics. mcguire said painting was “a state of hypnotism,” so it’s no wonder his works leave us mesmerized.

chances are you have heard By Kelley dawson local music legend, Kelly mcguire singing on the radio, entertaining on stage, or even while rafted up at redfish island. You may not have heard this talented troubadour recently won second place for his oil painting in the g. Lee’s gallery “brushes by the beach” Plein air art contest. mcguire told he’s been involved with art since around fifth grade, but it took him decades to seriously pursue painting. he
grew up in Kansas city, missouri, and visited an art gallery there. “i was enamored with art. i dabbled around with it at home and in school,” said mcguire. he continued art most of his school life and later attended Kansas State University. mcguire admitted, “i thought architecture would be good mixture of my engineer dad and my creative side, but it turned out trigonometry didn’t resonate at all with me.” his second semester, mcguire explored an art course. the following year, he opened an art gallery and frame shop in Joplin, missouri. he stated, “i didn’t sell my own art. i just wanted a gallery. in the meantime, i started playing music more and more.” mcguire then started performing at Shotgun Sam’s Pizza Palace and received an offer to go play music in oklahoma city. “i sold the gallery and went down the music path for 25 years. i was a one-man band; no songwriting back then. i made a good living,” he informed.
it was during the 1980s when mcguire made it down to the texas gulf coast. he disclosed, “after 25 years of music five nights a week; i was burned out. i went into yacht brokerage.”
mcguire continued playing music until he made enough money in the yacht business to quit music. he quit for about a year, but in the process began messing around with music at home, which he had never done before. he declared, “i wrote a song as i always wanted to do. i wrote about boats, beaches, and islands and thus became redfish island, my first cD.”

the history behind NaSa’s historic mission operations control room spans more than 50 years and time took a toll on the room. the historic mission operations control room, used during the gemini, apollo and Space Shuttle eras, was in acute need of restoration. the project is restoring flight control consoles and reactivating mission situational awareness displays to recreate apollo-era use of the wall-size screens. Furnishings such as carpeting, tile, paperwork, coffee cups and ashtrays in the room are being collected and restored to recreate the appearance of an active mission control room during the apollo era. When completed, the room will accurately portray how the area looked the moment the first moon landing occurred on July 20, 1969.

Main 101 Grill and bar
it's All About THe exPeRieNCe at this Hidden Gem in La Porte By shawn domingues & Betsey ennis
main 101 grill and bar is a hidden gem nestled between two vibrant towns, Seabrook and baytown. the freestanding building is an oasis on main Street at the corner of main and broadway in the quaint downtown area of La Porte (101 e. main Street). a fine-dining restaurant with a casual atmosphere, main 101 offers a unique and gourmet cuisine while striving to coordinate the perfect dining experience. owner and culinary creator, Joseph bertuglia has been entrenched in the food industry for more than 50 years, “i was born and raised in the food industry,” bertuglia said. “my dad owned a prime meat shop. i grew up picking out meats, and i gained an understanding of the process that goes into grading meats. With that experience, i have been able to incorporate the same understanding and knowledge into everything i order without being swayed by outside influence (sales reps, for example) about products such as ingredients, wines, seafood and meats.”
bertuglia is selective about every single ingredient and every product he offers to his guests. he only uses the freshest produce and the highest quality of seafood. all of the beef is USDa Prime, the steaks and seafood are all hand-cut in house, the sauces are made at the time they are ordered, and each piece of meat and seafood is cooked with a very specific technique to enhance and showcase its flavors.
“We hand pick everything. our food quality is superb. i make my decisions based what i feel is the best value and quality. i ask myself ‘if i had to use this item for the rest of my life, would it be pleasing?’ the answer has to be YeS!,” said bertuglia, “it's the same with wine. We choose the wine because of the value it has, not because the sales rep says we should buy it.”
main 101 specializes in combining flavors that are not ordinarily paired together to create unique dishes. When coming up with new menu items, bertuglia starts with a specific ingredient. he then starts combining flavors, with consideration of balance and a composed plate introducing different flavors to create the dish that guests will love as much as he does. While the extensive menu offers a variety of items, daily features are also offered to tantalize the taste buds, such as the broiled Salmon (topped with tarragon tomato sauce and jumbo lump crab, served on a bed of chickpea puree, drizzled with cucumber mint fruit salsa, served with zucchini towers stuffed with cremini mushrooms, spinach and feta cheese). all of the sauces are made at the time they are ordered.

Area Plays Role in Development of NASA’s Newest x-plane (x-59)
NaSa is developing the next X-plane, and last month our area was ground zero as NaSa personnel from the armstrong Flight research center (california), the Langley research center (Virginia) and NaSa headquarters (Washington Dc) all converged at ellington airport for a series of quiet supersonic research flights off the coast of the galveston. NaSa test pilots flew NaSa F/a-18 supersonic research aircraft in a unique maneuver that creates a quieter “thump” as part of the Quiet Supersonic Flights 2018, or QSF18, campaign.
QSF18 is a critical step in NaSa’s Low-boom Flight Demonstration, a comprehensive, scientifically-driven effort to provide U.S. and international regulators with statistically valid data that could result in new rules that allow commercial supersonic flight over land. Normally, an aircraft flying at supersonic speeds (faster than mach 1, the speed of sound) produces a sonic boom so loud that, today, commercial supersonic flight is prohibited over land.
Quiet supersonic dive maneuver, creating a quiet thump instead of a louder sonic boom.
creating a supersonic aircraft that doesn't produce sonic booms would be a game-changer for aviation. before being taken out of service in 2003, the concorde's speed was restricted over certain land routes because of disruptive sound waves.
enter NaSa's newest X-plane, the X-59 Quiet SuperSonic technology X-plane, or QueSSt, aimed at providing crucial data making supersonic flight more economical and enable commercial supersonic passenger air travel over land.
the X-planes are a series of experimental aircraft and rockets, used to test and evaluate new technologies and aerodynamic concepts. they have an X designator, which indicates the research mission. the X-1 dates back to 1946 and became the first aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight with chuck Yeager at the controls in 1947. See the list of notable X-planes on the opposite page to learn more about the X-plane program.
the X-59 marks the first time in decades that NaSa aeronautics is moving forward with the construction of a piloted X-plane. this one will be designed from scratch to fly faster than sound with the latest in quiet supersonic technologies. earlier this year NaSa awarded a $247.5 million contract to Lockheed martin aeronautics company to build the X-plane and deliver it to the agency’s armstrong Flight research center by the end of 2021.
but before the X-59 can be built, NaSa’s Johnson Space center and Flight operations were called on last month to provide critical support for a NaSa activity (QSF18) centered around about flight, even if not spaceflight in this case.

“NaSa’s role as a leader into new frontiers paves the way forward towards new technologies, opportunities, and milestones across multiple endeavors, as we have always done throughout our history,” explained mark geyer, director of NaSa’s Johnson Space center. “as our efforts also continue to expand our boundaries and capabilities in space, Johnson Space center is proud to be working with our colleagues at NaSa’s research centers at Langley and armstrong, and to take part in the agency’s aeronautics research efforts to lead aviation into a new era as ‘one NaSa.’”
X-1 • Bell • 1946 • High-speed and high-altitude flight. First aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight in 1947 . Proved aerodynamic viability of thin wing sections.
the goal of last month’s experiments centered around capturing how people and sensors on the ground responded to the quieter supersonic “thumps” made by NaSa test pilots.
“this is a big step in NaSa’s efforts to understand what is required for acceptable supersonic overland flight,” said NaSa’s commercial Supersonic technology Project manager Peter coen. “this is the first time in decades that we have reached out to a large community as part of our supersonic research. NaSa has performed similar tests at our armstrong Flight research center, using similar sounds created by the same F/a-18s. We’ve measured the noise levels and the impact on structures, as well as surveyed people for annoyance, to make certain that these tests are safe and well-planned. We greatly appreciate galveston’s interest and support.”
in galveston, community feedback data was gathered through the use of a survey, in which 500 recruited volunteer residents participated and defined the level at which they were able to perceive the sound. NaSa researchers also used sound-measuring equipment in and around galveston to supplement the public response data. QSF18 data will be used to help NaSa better understand successful data collection methods for future flights using the X-59.

Apollo Legends Reunite, Restored Historic Mission Control Unveiled
it was an historic sight – living legends who worked on the apollo program reunited for a major milestone to the see the unveiling of restored historic mission control consoles used to send humans to the moon. the newly restored units arrived in a return flight to ellington airport by way of NaSa’s Super guppy.
NaSa Johnson Space center and Space center houston are leading the restoration of historic mission control and yesterday marked a major milestone in the ongoing campaign to restore a National historic Landmark before the apollo 11 mission’s 50th anniversary in 2019.
Designed to carry oversized cargo, the Super guppy airlifted the consoles from the cosmosphere, a space museum in hutchinson, Kansas. Luminaries of NaSa Johnson Space center’s apollo program welcomed the consoles under a hangar at ellington airport. together the alumni observed the restored consoles for the first time. Special guests from the apollo-era included Will Davidson, ed Fendell, robert grilli, milt heflin, Denny holt, James Kelly, thomas Loe, glynn Lunney, merlin merritt, bill moon, bill reeves, and milt Windler.
Johnson Space center and Space center houston leadership were in attendance and spoke briefly about the work on the restoration and significance of restoring historic mission control to its authentic apollo-era configuration. those in attendance included NaSa Johnson Space center director mark geyer, Space center houston president and ceo William t. harris, NaSa Johnson Space center apollo mission control restoration project manager Jim thornton, and NaSa Johnson Space center director of flight operations brian Kelly.
the leading science and space exploration learning center aims to restore historic mission control as an authentic learning experience. “We want to keep the legacy of the apollo-era alive and preserve historic mission control,” said harris. “thanks to the combined efforts of so many people, future generations can experience this iconic room exactly as it was when Neil armstrong made his historic first steps on the moon.” restored consoles from the room were unveiled for the first time. the consoles revealed were used by the flight surgeon and capsule communication (caPcom). Located on the far left console of the second row was the flight surgeon. this position was held by a medical doctor, a flight systems officer who monitored the health of the astronauts. immediately next to the flight surgeon was the caPcom. this was the only flight controller allowed to talk to the astronauts.
