Comfort Food reimagined
The baCkyard: Giving 100-plus reasons to Visit Seabrook’s Newest hot Spot!
By sarah Piña
a hot new addition has arrived in the bay area, bringing a bevy of innovative meals, a warm atmosphere, and a fine-tuned craft beer and wine list to go with it!
the buzz is all about the backyard, and original doesn’t even begin to describe the eclectic journey guests can explore during their visit, a team effort from owner Jared Klein, general manager zach anders, and Chef erik Janszen.
“i actually came out here from California a few years ago with the idea that i wanted to open my own place, and i began working with (local restaurant) Nobi as a server, really learning about what people wanted, and had a whole education on craft beer,” said brooklyn-born Klein. “it was really like going back to college,” he said. as it so happened, the restaurant merlion on 4th in Seabrook was planning their relocation and expansion, and the pieces began to fall into place for what is now the backyard.
“i fell in love with the location, and decided after my visit there that it had to be the future location of my place. [merlion’s] relocation over the next several months gave me time to find my team and concept. my chef erik was essential for this. one of the main concepts is mac ‘n cheese, but it didn’t stop there,” he said, noting the tom Kha gai (thai Coconut Soup with grilled chicken, coconut milk, chili oil and grilled lime), arbol Corn Chowder (with cheddar and cotija cheeses, chipotle pepper and cilantro), and panko-crusted avocado bites which are now regular items on the menu. “the menu isn’t extensive, because we didn’t want to overdo it—but everything i tasted that erik created, i was just blown away. there is really something for everyone on this menu,” he said.
and who doesn’t love mac ‘n cheese? the more than 100 different recipes (customizable macs using the in-house ingredients, beyond what is featured on the menu) and twists of the classic remain the big, shining stars of the backyard.
“our Viet mac [white cheddar, mozzarella cheeses, fresh ginger, basil, and marinated flank steak] is one of our most popular macs. erik is a big fan of Phở, and he took all of those ingredients and flavors and created this incredible mac ‘n cheese,” Klein said, noting that the NoLa mac (white cheddar, mozzarella cheeses, andouille sausage, jumbo gulf shrimp, and red bell peppers) has also been incredibly popular, along with the elote mac (a blend of cheddar, cojita, grilled corn, and smoked paprika, topped with fresh cilantro, avocado slices and valentina crema)—one which was originally intended as a special mac that is about to become a regular menu item based on its rave reviews. the glowing feedback from guests extend to other delicious dishes as well!

By Kelley dawson League City resident, ashley m. Smith creates art of experiences.
“art has always been an interest of mine. as i got older, it turned into a passion,” proclaimed Smith.
She earned an art minor in college and said she has been doing it in her spare time ever since. Smith told she works with all types of mediums from charcoals and colored pencils to acrylics and water colors.
“i use a bit of everything,” she added. Smith stated creating gives her peace. She expressed, “if i have a hard day, i can let everything out when i am creating.” Smith mentioned she takes a lot of pride in her work. She disclosed, “When i see a finished piece it makes me proud and happy; even if it turned out terrible.” Smith described her artistry style, “it’s an experience thing; drawing and painting from experiences in my life. my favorite part is being able to make those experiences tangible.”
Smith’s creations emanate physical reality and beg to be touched.
She shared, “realism is what others have called my work. i try to capture the reality; to be more refined and not abstract.” her lifelike pieces seize a moment and transport the viewer to that time and place. Smith informed her travel images from around the world and photos from folks close to her are her main inspirations. She revealed her favorite piece is a landscape that captures an encounter she had in Switzerland.
Smith explained, “the actual photo had a cathedral on the other side of the trees. my professor suggested i not include the cathedral and let the nature be the cathedral.” Smith heeded her professor’s advice and removed the cathedral from her painting. “i let the nature speak. the light comes through and the beauty of the place,” she defined. Smith should have many favorite pieces as the majority of her work captures these same intriguing qualities. Smith correctly coined her artistic endeavors as “See Life art.”

The backyard • Seabrook: Cont. From Page 10
“the response has been incredible, on social media, food review apps, everywhere. our wings—and i’m a big fan of wings, so i was adamant about getting that perfect crunch, and great flavor—have gotten some great reviews as well. i had one guest tell me that they must have had over 10,000 wings in their life, and these are some of the best they have ever had,” Klein said, referring to the hot honey garlic Wings, sauced in spiced honey, garlic and gochujang (spicy Korean pepper sauce). other standouts include the Saigon Steak tacos (grilled flank steak, pico de gallo, cabbage, Sriracha crema, and grilled lime), and the Korean Pork Cracklins (crispy pork belly, deep-fried and tossed in Korean spices with hot honey sauce). and as if the innovative twists on mac ‘n cheese and variety of creative dishes weren’t enough, the backyard offers a finely-tuned wine list and a rotating craft brew menu, showcasing some of the newest and best texas has to offer—something with a fun future ahead!
“be on the lookout soon for mac ‘n cheese flights that we will be pairing with beer flights as well,” Klein said. Future offerings will even include rolling out a brunch menu, sandwich specials, and further twists on mac ‘n cheese, because as Klein points out, “the possibilities are endless! there’s just so much you can do with it!” great food and drinks with a twist—what’s more to love? how about a perfect, cozy atmosphere both inside and out where everything can be enjoyed as well?
“So my parents were visiting for our grand opening [on January 19], and during their time here they showed me some videos of me, as a kid really enjoying food,” Klein laughed. “We had a butcherblock table in the house, and our custom tables reflect that as well.
there’s really nothing better than a meal shared with family, conversation, and laughing. i wanted a place that felt like home. i had a vision, and i wanted our backyard to feel like they’re in their own backyard,” he said, adding that the large open patio, complete with a fire pit, games, picnic tables, and soft lighting is also a great place to reserve for upcoming events, and a beautiful space for occasions such as wedding receptions. “We also love giving back, so keep us in mind for future events and fundraisers, as well,” he added, noting that this homey atmosphere and “chill vibe,” as Klein describes it, will also include live acoustic music on a regular basis once warmer weather rolls around. 100-plus recipes of mac ‘n cheese, plus all of this? it’s 100 and more reasons to come and visit the backyard!
“We are just so excited to be here, be in Seabrook and meet new people and see new faces. it really feels like a family already. Come in, come say hi, come get to know us! We look forward to seeing you in our backyard!” said Jared.
the backyard is located at 1301 4th St. in Seabrook (formerly merlion’s on 4th location). Visit thebackyardseabrook.com or keep up with weekly specials and more on Facebook (the backyard Seabrook). So grab the whole family, enjoy a comfort food classic with a twist (and perhaps a new texas craft brew or two)! make sure to tell them the SCeNe sent you!

Local Product “ThaT CaPTaiN” Plans World’s Most ambitious Concert Tour by Sailboat • Part ii
in 2011 local sailor and songwriter (Shark attack, Cassette tape, that Captain) marc borde joined forces with two fellow musicians to form a band named “the Crew” and sailed out of Seabrook in a 26-foot sloop to tour gulf Coast, completing 33 shows in 38 days, covering over 300 miles of coastline. they toured in support of a CD they recorded on the 26-foot sailboat. the adventure was one of a kind, covered here in the SCeNe magazine and documented in the multi-media book “guitar Strings & Sailboat things.” borde, who grew up sailing on galveston bay as a youth sailor for the houston yacht Club, has long had a dream of touring the world by sailboat. Since his tour of the texas coast, borde moved to California to pursue his music career, but still visits the area while touring the country by tour bus with his folk/reggae band “that Captain.”
but everything changed in the fall of 2017, when French singer brisa roché presented borde with an unfinished 50-foot trimaran “tatzelwurm” that her father and a friend started construction on more than 40 years ago. roché inherited the boat and a chance meeting with borde in Northern California ended in marc taking ownership of tatzelwurm in order to fulfill her father’s wishes.
Following 80 “that Captain” shows during two laps of the West and east Coasts through the rocky mountains and back along the gulf Coast ending in Spring of 2018, work started on the massive boat. the work culminated with moving it out of the shed, its home for more than 30 years, and into the water off the coast of eureka, California where it floats today. but the story has just begun. Check back next month for more details about this one-of-a-kind adventure.

Punkstar radio Full Throttle Presents:
Murder at the Masquerade! Looking for something a little (or a lot!) different this Valentine’s Day? this coming February 13, the events presented by Punkstar Full throttle will surely not disappoint! From aerial acrobatics to progressive metal bands, and a “dress to impress” masquerade theme of the bloody Valentine sort, Scout bar will play host to arguably the most unique event happening in houston on Valentine’s weekend! each month, Punkstar radio Full throttle currently presents a big night of bands and special guests. Khris harding, owner and Ceo of Punkstar radio and Punkstar Full throttle has been part of the houston music scene for over 13 years, and has watched the production develop into what it is today.
“When Chris Caldares and i originally started this, we were at a different location downtown. it eventually migrated to Scout bar, where thomas [Wilson, owner of Scout bar] gave us full reign over production. Punkstar radio houston started out as Punkstar Full throttle from the stage at Scout bar houston broadcasting live in 2011, and we eventually went from doing so every Wednesday to making it one big event each month,” harding said, noting that various personnel commonly associated with Scout and/or the houston music scene have all greatly contributed to Punkstar radio and the shows at some point past or present throughout the years, including roland belmarez as a producer; current Cohost and Station Liaison Joey “JoJo” henningsen from houston rock tV; Kevin hamlin with social media and production; as well as Summer house, who serves as Station manager, executive Producer, Vice President and CFo. “Currently, we have these theme parties once a month, with the goal of supporting local music. it’s free cover, supported by our sponsors like Dan’s Pizza who brings pizza every week, and the bands donate their time as well,” harding said. “We like to do collaborations, birthdays, anything we can do to celebrate or to help the community.” this Valentine’s Day, however, harding wanted to do something different for the upcoming event themed “murder at the masquerade.”
“everyone can dress up in however they interpret masquerade to be. For example, since it’s mardi gras season, it’s a great time to try out costumes and masks. Sort of like horror-meets-Phantom of the opera, though it doesn’t need to be scary. you can be pretty with a mask on, or it can be more dark. it’s an event that’s not all necessarily lovey-dovey. it’s metal, and it’s rock ‘n roll. it’s like getting another halloween, but Valentine’s style,” said harding, who also frequently hosts events throughout houston at various venues. in addition to the attendees’ costumes setting the tone for the night, several bands and special guests are slated to make appearances.

“We are really looking forward to progmetal band anova Skyway headlining, accompanied by a progressive fetish model. asleep in the Wake will also perform, sort of like this ‘supergroup’ of houston music. then we’ll have Shadow Council, with darker metal, but with a good vibe and interaction with the crowd,” harding said.
each Punkstar Full throttle event has an initial full sit-down on the stage with each band and special guests, where attendees can learn more about the performers.
“you really get to know the band, and the people performing beforehand. but you never know what is going to happen, it’s truly insane, some of the stories that come out. they have had us laughing, crying, or just in shock at times!” harding said. in addition to the bands at murder at the masquerade, burlesque performer and aerial acrobat Jordan James will also take the stage for the first time in houston for a four-song skit as a bloody ballerina—fitting to the theme of the night— as well as showcase her talent in aerial acrobatics (“it’s going to have a very Cirque du Soleil feel,” said harding).
the broadcast itself begins at 8 p.m., with the sit-down beginning at 8:30 p.m. and the bands at 10 p.m. on www.punkstarradiohouston.com --though all of these events will be best enjoyed live and in person! So dress to impress “murder at the masquerade” style and head over to Scout bar for an unforgettable night on February 13—and when you go, make sure to tell them the SCeNe sent you! - sarah Piña

Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is? the unpredictable work schedule. it's almost impossible to know exactly what you'll be doing, and for how long, on any given day.
if you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow, which brewery would it be, and why? avery brewing. their quality and sensory departments are among the best in the industry, and living in Colorado wouldn't be too shabby!

When we closed the game out, i threw an entire can all our apartment living room. that will be a night that i will never forget.
The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. the most interesting job i have held before being a brewer was working at the Cinemark in Webster. that was my first experience with dealing with the general public. it got awkward/interesting several times an hour.
Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. Prepare to clean… a Lot. The state of the Texas craft beer scene is awesome! the fact that we have been recognized as being a craft beer state along with places like oregon, Colorado and California is amazing. Let’s keep growing!

Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is? Keg CLeaNiNg. you can clean kegs all day and feel like you have done absolutely nothing. there will always be mountains of kegs to clean.

5 words that describe you: Positive, confident, friendly, optimistic, reliable
Favorite thing about the Bay Area? i’m originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. i’m going to go with the mild winters!!! i’ll take the hot over the cold any day! Best tip you ever got: monetarily speaking, $700 was my biggest tip from some Notre Dame fans, while bartending a game day in Lincoln, Ne. however, my best tip was left on a table i served shortly after i had lost someone very close to me. this customer had no idea what was going on in my life. When i went to pick up the check, there was a small, green, glass stone that read, “Stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong.” What do you love about Bartending? Not sitting at a desk! always moving, creating, meeting new people from all walks of life. gaining knowledge, taking and giving advice, learning life lessons from listening and talking to people. the saying, “if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.” For me, that’s bartending. Who inspires you? my kids, everyday!!

acoustic all Stars OVeR The TOP - Scout bar came up with a doozie in January Show @ with the acoustic all Stars Show hosted by Scott easterwood. on Scout bar a dry January evening, a gathering of notorious industrial metal, icehouse, and avante garde musicians came together for something unexpected, an evening of exclusively acoustic music. andy Cortez started the show off, setting the tone for a laid back refreshing evening - gordon Lightfoot came to mind. the trio of easterwood, esther Spring Conolly & alex Slay were able to get in a few tasty originals as the house started to fill, before returning to the task at hand of putting on a show. hats off to alex for running lights, sound and stage setups throughout the evening. in 2018, we enjoyed seeing big Jordan applebe and his band make it onto the regional big stages. Chatting with applebe, he passed along how he enjoys composing as much as he likes to play music and also there’s a patch of serious songwriters in the area from the texas hill Country running up to the red dirt in oklahoma, something i need to run down. his songwriting skills struck my muse - Stories for the every-person in everyday life that are clearly presented, connecting with listeners. When i asked Jordan when will he be recording his works, he says “Soon! right now, richard, our sound engineer (and fiddle player) is building me a new guitar as soon as he’s through, we’ll be getting right on it.” Please hurry with the guitar, richard…. thanks!
the biggest surprise i witnessed that evening was getting to hear SLm Nominees, anthony Puskus and tom rivera of Card Castle Deluxe getting after it. i’ve always known these two as a ferocious electric duo playing on the icehouse circuit but have never before heard the two on acoustic with virtuoso class precision - these guys really need to be on the festival circuit in 2019. the lineup that evening listed Chris hardy (side stage), anthony Puskus & tom rivera, Jak Frost, brian "bC" Carrion, angie & Cisco, red's Xiii, Scott easterwood, andy Cortez, Jordan tydings, Curtis Skelton, Jordan appleby, heidi Lirette, marcus tabet - i’ve no doubt there were others. unfortunately, it was a work week night and i was unable to attend the entire show which is my loss. according to easterwood, there will be more of these types of shows in the future and i wholeheartedly recommend you keep your eye on the watch. before leaving, i was able to catch word Pub Level will be the place for the tune out Cancer music Festival for the texas Children’s hospital. Put this on your calendar for march 30th & 31st as this is a cause definitely worth supporting. the event plans call for three stages, over 30 performing acts and hosted by Khris harding. this should be a doozie - hope to see you there!

iT’s A WRAP - We’ve had a wacky winter with the weather and it’s not over yet. Fortunately, the days are getting longer, the live music SCeNe in January was incredibly good and i suspect it’ll only be getting better. if you’ve a pal or neighbor that’s on the down and out with all that’s happening out of their control, be a champ and lend ‘em a hand if you can. give them a break and take them out on the SCeNe - We’ve lots of good things happening in our area and it’s the texas thing to do. See ya out there!

GALVesTON BAY PARROT heAds - remember the days of flash crowds? they’re still around if you hang out with this flock. they seem like they’re everywhere on the SCeNe and in January, we swooped in with them for the evening at railean Distillery & buccaneer bar with the Detentions.
in 2018, railean landed a spot on my Friendliest hangout List, growing better and betterer each time we stop in. the drinks for this evening included the alamo Pow Wow (agave) and Classic Daiquiris made with fresh juices - None of the syrupy stuff.
the Detentions were every bit the fun we read about in the January issue of the SCeNe. they reminded me of a cross between the bilge Pumps in flip flops. hailing from atX, i’ve a hunch they’ll be spreading word when they get back home about the good times that are had at this nifty San Leon distillery. i know austinites as i used to be one myself - they’ll be jealous and wish they had a place like this. We got a good one.

BROKeN NeW YeAR’s ResOLuTiONs - Didn’t take me long in 2019. the past several years, i have been testing a hypothesis that on any given night at Katie’s when you’ve never before heard of the band playing, it was a good bet you’d catch a good show. this streak had been working well for me for over two years. yet, it seemed that i had become overdue covering the regular acts at Katie’s so in 2019, i made that my resolution.
Josh Garrett @ katie’s
and so it just so happened we were on the neighborhood returning from a fantastic evening at railean Distillery and saw Josh garrett on the Katie’s marquee set to play that evening. i had never heard garrett play before and like an old habit, decided to check him out…. WoW!!!!
apparently, it was only i in the dark as garrett (from houma, Louisiana) has an established strong following in the greater houston region over the decade through his affiliation with the houston blues Society. that night at Katie’s (where there’s never a cover) people from all over the metroplex came to bacliff for this show. even the reclusive Darrell, serial fabricator of competition bbQ rigs, restorer of classic automobiles, and the remodeling contractor for Katie’s current layout was in the house. Darrell should run for mayor…
the opening sound check was not the jazzy vamp i often hear as the musicians and sound guy gets their levels dialed in. this one was a swampy spacey sort of sound like the intro to Shine on you Crazy Diamond, but all played on a singular bending note long enough for the band to get their sonic compass set before launching into an evening of psychedelic swamp rock. Slick & spiffy… the tone this evening was monster with the help of houston’s barry Seelan on the b3. other members of the band listed include matthew Chauvin and terry Cheramie on bass & drum respectively.
his discography includes the titles: honey For my Queen, String of Problems, Live on Printer’s alley, and Changed man. according to his people, “Josh garrett has been entertaining audience all over the country for the last five years with his own style of Louisiana blues. garrett’s style is a mixture of La blues, New orleans Funk, zydeco, and rock ‘n’ roll... he is known for his soulful vocals, emotion infused guitar styling, and that South Louisiana flavor that only comes from those with Louisiana in there blood.” Josh garrett’s on my watch list. Put him on yours.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 39
ARENA ROCK - in 2018 came Diamond Jack who were able to land a spot on my list of New Local bands of the year so starting off the New year catching their show at Jackie’s brickhouse made sense. in their word, they call themselves a “Classic Power arena rock” band. it dawned on me that not all readers may understand what this means. Let me try to describe… there was a time you would have to buy an entire album for $5 to hear the two songs that were the hits. With each album release, you could count on the band going on tour where you could see them play for about a $6 ticket. they called these shows “concerts” and were often held at some fairgrounds/arena setting, along with hundreds and possibly Diamond Jack @ Jackie’s Brickhouse thousands of others in attendance too. to sound pleasing for such an audience, the sound naturally had to be big. one of the paradoxes was that bands in the early stages of their careers would not have had a full playlist of hits to stretch their assigned times (typically an hour) so they would stretch the popular songs they had with extended solos to linger longer. For convenience sake, soloist would play what they felt like playing and being human, other humans ideally would lock on and tune in. if conditions were right, one’s spine would start tingling which i imagine is what a cat feels like when it’s purring. anyway, this is what i call arena rock and if this close to what your ears are needing to hear, give Diamond Jack a whirl… - Continued on Page 37

Loose Notes
Andy and The Dreamsicles @ Kemah Elks Lodge
greetings good People! tis February, the weather is being tricky, crawfish are returning, and the live music at spots on the SCeNe has been incredibly good - it was good catching up with many of you. Let’s take a minute to run down a bit of what all that went down.
by Andy Eng
NYE 10 Year Pin - this year is my 10th year with the SCeNe the adventures have been fun, the people fantastic, and the live music special. it seemed fitting this year to celebrate Nye with the people and at the places i covered 10 years ago, which would be the andy and the Dreamsicles party at Kemah’s elk Lodge and with Wood & Wind at the bayview Duck.
over the decade, the Dreamsicles have cultivated a hardy following of revelers unmatched in my book. their annual Nye parties are always well attended and in my opinion, thanks to Vicky upchurch, the gatherings have grown steadily over the years in terms of class and elegance while andy and the band assures the parties are always bending the needle on the Fun meter.
this year, the setting was the Kemah’s elk Lodge which too has handled the test of time well over the decades. houston has a habit of demolishing older buildings with character for new construction. Lucky us, Kemah’s elk Lodge has held up well with their yard of humungous oak trees - a stately serene setting and a smashing fun party to ring in the new year - you had the tingle you were in a back to the Future place and time.
Down the road on hwy 146, we stopped in another site that should be declared a State historical Site, the bayview Duck with Wood & Wind along with red Xiii. this family affair has been at ground zero for lots of local live music events over the decade, always has a spot for an accompanying artist (tonight, we had rita on percussion) has a unique sound which is truly their own and with the musically inventive angie & Cisco part of the show, extends the music dimensionally into further genres while bridging the generations. Pretty cool, i think. and a great way to start the new year!

Jackie’s brickhouse brings New Music, Menus, and atmosphere in 2019!
By sarah Piña
exciting changes are taking place at one of Kemah’s favorite spots for everything from relaxed afternoons with cold drinks to dynamic live music and nightlife on the dance floor! Fans of Jackie’s brickhouse, now in its ninth year, will continue to enjoy the happy hour specials from monday through Friday (all day on monday!) and spicy, tasty crawfish— but now with a new atmosphere, and so much more!
“over the past year, we began to remodel Jackie’s brickhouse, with a lot of changes that have already taken place,” said general manager John barrera. “We are excited about the growth and rebranding,” he said, noting the new Jackie’s brickhouse logo and the updated modern-industrial feel both inside and out.
as part of the revamping, patrons on their next go-around must visit the brand new Jackie’s Speakeasy upstairs. the rusticmodern wood and metal elements that now adorn the entire bar and grill are also woven into the elegant speakeasy, complete with sophisticated leather couches and chairs, all of which create a perfect space for special gatherings and events. “it’s a ViP room ideal for special occasions. We have already hosted a variety of events here—even baby showers, and it’s an ideal location for booking wedding receptions, engagement parties, and much more,” barrera said, adding that dates are filling up quickly throughout the year, so reservations for Jackie’s Speakeasy are highly encouraged as soon as possible. “We can also create any kind of special menu for your event, from a mashed potato bar to a taco bar—you name it! We can work with you to create your special event,” he said. and speaking of food, guests can look forward to an updated menu at Jackie’s brickhouse as well.
“We are in the process of restructuring our menu and tweaking some offerings. We will be adding on some requested dishes also, so look for a new menu soon!” he said, noting that the updates also include new service training for an even better guest experience at Jackie’s.

on the music front—because Jackie’s is known for bringing in live music that will draw everyone to the dance floor!—guests can look forward to more of the most popular tribute bands in the state.
“We are excited to bring in some great tribute bands at least twice a month. During February, that includes infinite Journey (tribute to Journey) and a tom Petty/Stevie Nicks tribute,” barrera said, noting that beloved bands like the Velcro Pygmies and mambo Jazz Kings will also hit the stage later in the month. “in march, we will also host tributes to george Strait, which we are really excited about,” adding that the renowned KiSS tribute KiSS aLiKe will perform as well, along with rising young stars Nick and the groove who will open an unforgettable evening on march 16. all in all, Jackie’s brickhouse guests can continue to expect quality food, a variety of live music line ups and fun with pool, shuffle boards, and more—but now with a ViP loft not to be missed, and an updated, modern-rustic feel.
Jackie’s brickhouse is located at 1053 marina bay Dr. in Kemah, and is open daily. hours are Sunday through tuesday from 11 a.m. to 10 a.m., Wednesday 11am to midnight, and thursday though Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Call 832-8642459 to reserve Jackie’s Speakeasy for your special gathering! in the meantime, stop by any day for a cold one, some great crawfish, or just to enjoy your weekend with some of the best live entertainment the bay area has to offer. be sure to tell them the SCeNe sent you!

Live Music Spotlight: Zach Tate band
By sarah Piña
From the countryside in ontario, Canada to the gulf Coast shores of Seabrook, texas, the musical journey of zach tate has seen him play everywhere from barns to biker bars—which is not unlike the musical path—with influences of country, blues, Southern rock, and more— one follows when listening zach tate band albums.
Velcro Pygmies
“i was raised in Windsor, ontario, which borders Detroit. When i started playing guitar as a teenager, i was out in the country, so it was more of a barn band than a garage band,” tate laughed. Life would eventually see tate further pursue music in Los angeles, where he recorded three albums with a previous band, and then later as the zach tate band in houston, where he currently resides. the texas connection –and success to follow— ironically seemed to write itself into existence.
Friday, Feb. 8
JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE
“it’s interesting because there’s a famous road in my hometown of urban legend called texas road, which is the name of a song i wrote in Los angeles. it seems within about three months, i came to houston. though internet radio was a newer thing at the time [in 2006], it then went number one on the texas top 40,” he recalled.
Fast-forward to 2019, and the zach tate band’s 6th CD, angels & outlaws was just released on February 1 of this year, and the eclectic nature of the album cannot be understated. though it exudes smoky blues, Southern rock, and country influences, the musical journey is not a linear one. “the song that opens the album, ‘outlaw,’ is rock, and it’s heavy. it’s based on the twin Peaks shooting a few years back in Waco,” tate explained. “but then some tracks later, there are some more Jack Johnson-feeling moments, about love, and about loss. it’s about experiences that resonate with us in many different ways. maybe i just think there’s a certain safety in continuity, but how people interpret it isn’t up to me.”
Sol Flair
Saturday, Feb. 9 CABO
this variation in sound can also be heard at the many places the zach tate band plays in the houston area. the current lineup apart from tate (vocals/guitar/harmonica) includes Lynn raggio (lead guitar/backing vocals); Jody Smith (drums); Drew Schuessler (bass); and gary graham (keys/backing vocals), all of whom are from texas or Louisiana, though the outfit depends on the venue.
“of course you’ll hear more of a harder rock ‘n roll at the biker bars we play, which we love, or the Lone Star biker rally…but it may be more of an acoustic set in other spaces,” he said, such as in a recent gig tate and raggio played in a more intimate setting at the house of blues houston. “either way, my main function is to keep people entertained. i am so thankful to all of the venues and people who continue to support original music and musicians.”
the zach tate band will perform next in the bay area on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Crazy alan’s Swamp Shack - Kemah (acoustic set w/Lynn raggio), with several other dates to follow throughout the area (see sidebar). For further updates on the zach tate band, “like” their Facebook page or visit www.zachtate.com. So get ready for some smoky, Southern rock ‘n roll at a venue near you—and when you go, make sure to tell them the SCeNe sent you!
