Introducing AXE MASTERS TEXAS Grand Opening Celebration April 6
By Twila Lindblade
United States marine Corp Veteran robin langseth’s ambitious, organized and competitive spirit combined with a love of family and fun inspired her to launch the Bay area’s only climate-controlled axe throwing arena.
the venue, which recently opened its doors in league City, allows families, couples and various groups to come together for axe-throwing competitions. “trained aXe-perts will personally teach you how to throw,” langseth said.
axe throwing is a unique way for families and groups to connect, and it is a sport that men and women can equally enjoy, she said. “i don’t think we take enough time to play. this is something people can do and enjoy together. it’s an equal playing field,” she said.
langseth and her husband richard have a blended family of five children ages 13 to 26 years old. Finding something that all of them enjoy lead to the adoption of the axe masters. the family had scouted axe throwing locations in the houston area, tennessee and Florida before deciding to open their own Bay area business.
“my youngest doesn’t like being outside and he’s not incredibly athletic. But, this is something out of the ordinary that we all like to do,” langseth said. “i don’t like to sit still. there’s not a whole lot of entertainment options in the Bay area outside of bars, bowling and golf.”
Christina gray, a Friendswood resident and mother of two boys, 11 and 12, took her family to axe masters recently and was amazed by the service and the unique idea. “the staff was so nice and patient and taught us all how to properly throw safely and properly. the boys had a great time. We

will definitely go back,” she said. axe masters will host a grand opening event on april 6 at 2 p.m. Booked parties will receive a 30 percent discount and walk-ins will receive a 20 percent discount. Snacks and door prizes will be given away each hour as well. reservations of 10 or more can be made at info@axemasterstx.com or groups under 10 can be made online at www.axemasterstx.com.
axe masters is a unique location for birthday parties, corporate events, bachelorette, bachelor, and divorce parties. patrons may bring their own food and beverages. Beer and wine are permitted on the premises, but liquor is discouraged. While axe throwing can be a fun activity, it can also be a great workout and stress-reliever, langseth said.
“it can really help get anger and frustration out,” she said. “it’s in a controlled environment and we teach you how to throw properly. By the end, you are a bit worn out.”
the axes typically weigh between 1.5 to 2 pounds. the facility is aDa compliant and has targets that are wheelchair accessible. - Continued on Page 7

“We have a family member in a wheelchair, and it’s important to us that those who are wheelchair bound are able to participate, too,” langseth said. in addition to the typical axe-throwing activities, axe masters has also joined the World axe throwing league and will allow local patrons to join in competitive tournaments. axe masters is designed for those ages 11 years and older. they will offer various days of the month where teens and pre-teens can throw for free with their parents in the near future.
axe masters is located at 400 hobbs road, Suite 209 in league City. hours are thursday 6 to 10 p.m.; Friday 6 p.m. to midnight; Saturday 2 p.m. to midnight and monday through Wednesday is open for private parties by appointment only. pricing, reservations and other information can be found on the web site at www.axemasterstx.com. parties larger than 10 people are asked to send an email to info@axemasterstx.com. Escape to Paradise at Noah’s Ark By Betsey ennis
picture yourself leaning back on a beach chair, closing your eyes, soaking in the sea breeze and sipping on an ice cold (possibly frozen) drink or nibbling on tasty appetizers while receiving excellent customer service. You wish you were within driving distance of this waterfront paradise… You are in luck!
overlooking galveston Bay, away from the hustle and bustle of tourist traffic, find Noah’s ark restaurant – an ark-inspired building with a huge palapa nestled on top – awaiting your next escape.
Co-owners Steven tolhurst, Fred lyttle and Kellie Verlander have been imagining and reimagining the evolving Bacliff restaurant-turned-escape-destination into what it is today. if you are a beer lover, they’ve got you covered! their recent addition of 11 beers on tap is sure to please! tolhurst said their goal is to create a little slice of paradise for guests to unwind: waterfront views, chill vibe, delicious food and outstanding customer service. he explained, “Noah’s ark is quite relaxing with wonderful views of the Bay
but without all the traffic.”
Noah’s ark boasts three of the best downstairs waterfront patios in galveston County, but the newest addition – and the pride of Noah’s ark – is their upstairs. the parrots Nest, as it’s called, is a 21-and-up, 3800-square-foot palapa with some of the best unobstructed views of galveston Bay and, most days, the best breeze!
the beautiful cedar tables and bar are paired with bamboo barstools. meet up with friends or pull up to whet your whistle around the bar. there’s not a bad seat in the house – or rather – oN the house! guests are encouraged to sit and stay awhile. everything on the food and drink menu downstairs is also available upstairs under the palapa.
the parrot’s Nest is ready for the warmer temperatures to take “chill” to the next level. Be sure to check out their summer drink line up. Cool drinks for hot days include Blackberry lemon Julip, pineapple mojito, Watermelon mojito, Crown Cure-all and Stoli moscow mule. or enjoy a cold draft beer from the 11 they have on tap.
Noah’s ark specializes in several liquid treats. highly recommended specialty drinks include parrot head punch, Noah’s hurricane and Noah’s Southern tea, also worth a whirl, order the manhattan, Noah’s mojito, Noah piña Colada, Noah’s mudslide or the Dirty monkey (made with real bananas and locally distilled railean rum.) margarita options include the Noah’s rita, Jalapeño rita, Cheetah rita and the Coronita rita. their martini menu includes Noah’s pink Cosmo, James Bond martini (shaken Bond-style!) and the Ultimate makers abyss martini. - Continued on Page 17

3rd Annual Oyster Fest Brings Fun and Festivities to Sunny San Leon – Home of the Half Shell By shawn domingues
the San leon oyster Fest is on Saturday, april 27 at pier 6 Seafood restaurant (113 6th St., San leon). Formerly Bubba’s Shrimp palace, many improvements have been made to the property and the land surrounding it to accommodate the event and the large crowd expected to attend this year, and the new restaurant will open the bar area for the first time during the festival.
the event starts at 2 p.m. with festivities including an oyster-eating contest, professional and amateur oyster cook-offs, a kid’s zone (sponsored by the San leon Church), local vendors and craft booths, food trucks will be on-site offering non-oyster menu options and live music throughout the day with legendary Country Western recording artist, mickey gilley, headlining the event at 7 p.m. the goal of the event is to promote appreciation for oysters and bring awareness to the vital role they play in the brackish waters of galveston Bay, with proceeds going directly toward the continuing enhancement of the public oyster reefs that are crucial for their survival.
oysters need shells in order to grow and spawn and their shells form reefs in the bay that provide shelter and spawning areas for a variety of other marine life, such as shrimp, mollusks, worms, crabs and fish. most importantly, though, the valves in oysters act as filters for the bay, removing organic and inorganic particles from the water, packaging them into bundles and releasing them back into the water where they are then utilized as food by other organisms. With all of the pollution and harmful particles that are now in our bay, the filtering capability of these magnificent mollusks is more important than ever. oysters are also an excellent source of essential nutrients. health benefits of eating oysters include stronger bones, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, increased blood circulation, quicker healing rates and increased metabolism. For centuries, oysters have been known as one of nature’s aphrodisiacs because of their extremely high levels of zinc. eating oysters can increase the libido and enhance sexual performance.

San leon has been called the “oyster Capital of texas” because it is home to two of the largest oyster companies in the state – prestige oysters (owned and operated by Johnnie and lisa halilli) and misho’s oyster Company (owned and operated by misho ivich). Both businesses are family-owned and operated and both were established more than 30 years ago in San leon. But these two families aren’t fierce competitors; they have built a camaraderie based on mutual respect and their shared priority to maintain the sustainability of the oyster population in galveston Bay by replenishing the public reefs that have been devastated over the past 10 years by hurricanes, droughts, algae spores and a lack of salinity in the bay, decreasing the oyster population by an estimated 50 to 85 percent in galveston Bay. restoration of the reefs destroyed by hurricane harvey has cost roughly $70 million to rebuild just 1,400 acres of the devastated oyster beds and it is estimated that it will take $330 million and decades (yes, decades) for the oyster population to fully recover. - Continued on Page 16

a popular attraction upstairs in the parrots Nest is enjoying live music. Kick off the weekends with Karaoke on Fridays (aka Jerry-oke). live music fills the air on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m.; Saturday nights, dance the night away from 8 p.m. to midnight as the parrots Nest hosts bands. this month, catch tom Kats, alvin and the Slick punks, andy mcCarthy and Wood N Wind. inside the ark-inspired structure, diners can choose window seats with water views, sit around the bar, or choose from an abundance of tables in ark-themed interior where kids and the young at heart will be tickled by the numerous Noah’s ark references they find.
tolhurst said, “at Noah’s ark, guests will never be handed a pager.” explaining that open seating is always available, inside or out, and guests can seat themselves to take advantage of the water views, or find a more intimate spot inside to suit their mood. large parties of guests are always welcome.
the three downstairs patios aren’t just family friendly, but pet-friendly. Four-legged family members are always welcome, but Noah’s (like most establishments) requests that pets must be on a leash. the Noah’s ark menu consists of freshly made and original recipes. the fried foods are hand-breaded and made to order. the diverse menu offers “standard” seafood staples, plus various comfort foods such as Chicken Fried Steak, Chicken Fried Chicken meatloaf, Spaghetti, pork roast Fettuccini alfredo and Chicken parmesan and grilled Chicken Breast. must-try items include the hot mermaids (shrimp and jalapeño wrapped in bacon, served grilled or fried), hand breaded onion rings and fried mushrooms, oysters (raw or four flavors of grilled) and the fresh, handmade angus burgers, plus a vegetarian burger option. tolhurst said, “remember, our chefs prepare everything fresh to order from our own recipes.” another must-try recommendation is breakfast, served weekdays 8 a.m. to noon, Saturdays 7 a.m. to noon and Sundays 7am to 11 a.m. Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., also enjoy a breakfast buffet, complete with omelet and egg station plus fresh fruit. Bring the family; kids (ages 4 to 10) eat for $5.99.
No matter your taste or mood, who couldn’t use an adult refuge with some sea breeze therapy? hop in your car and know there’s a place for you at Noah’s ark where you can escape to paradise, sip on a refreshing beverage, eat deliciously and soak in the aaahmazing feeling. (Sunglasses not included.)

She realized the shacks represented the poverty of the country. Yim expressed her motivation to create a 182-piece panel. She explained, “it is a representation of the children in orphanages in haiti. each small piece represents around 176 children in orphanages there. this number totaling to roughly 32,000 children in the small country.”
Yim is hopeful to find a place for the unique and moving panel. She plans to donate any profits to a shelter in haiti. Yim’s impressive portfolio full of museum-worthy abstracts, representational works, and even Western art is certainly a “paigeturner.”
She is destined to make her mark in the art world.

You don’t need to know the difference between the “main” and the “jib” to enjoy and appreciate the Bay area’s most beautiful spectator sport, sailing. Few places anywhere on the planet have the kind of sailing community that is found in the Bay area. this area is home to competitive sailing programs and races run by a number of yacht clubs and local sailing associations. For anyone who loves to sail, who could ask for a better place to live or visit than the Bay area? But sailing is also a fabulous spectator sport, and our area offers residents and visitors the rare opportunity to enjoy the impressive sight of sailing up-close and personal during the Wednesday Night races on Clear lake.
the 41st season kicked off on Wednesday, april 3. the organizing body is the Clear lake racing association, an informal association of sailing enthusiasts from all the sailing clubs around the houston and galveston Bay area. During the months of april to october (during Daylight Savings time), there is enough light left over in the day to get off work, and head for the docks to launch boats and get in a sailboat race. the Wednesday Night races are a wonderful mid-week break, and the short distances between marks provide a great venue to sharpen boat and sail-handling skills. the best spectator outpost and official host venue is Villa Capri in Seabrook where a crowd gathers to watch the races and listen to the commentary from the race announcer. after the race, all the sailors gather at Villa Capri restaurant to join the spectators for food and drinks and the trophy presentation. other spectator spots include Barge 295 (formerly the turtle Club) and Cabo.
there are Wednesday Night Sailboat races held all over the country, but those held in Clear lake are unique because many of the marks are placed close to spectator viewing locations. So close, in fact, the spectators get a really good look at the teamwork required to get the jib up and douse the spinnaker. Yacht races are not known as a spectator sport, but when they are viewed in the comfort and proximity of a convenient dock (instead of the middle of a large body of water), it can be quite entertaining and is an event to check out at least once, if not weekly. these races began locally in the late ‘70s and have evolved. major changes continued from recent seasons include that the number of races have been cut down, and there will be no season ending championship series. one other major change will be a bye week (week of no racing) between each series.

JETSURF HOUSTON OPEN on Clear Lake
First Motorsurf Race in Texas takes place April 13 & 14
motosurf is an exciting new professional motorsport on the water which was born in the Czech republic and is quickly spreading all over the world visiting texas for the first time this month with the JetSurf houston open on Clear lake, april 12-14.
hosted by Jet Surf houston as part of the business’ grand opening Weekend Celebration (april 11-14), the JetSurf houston open will feature racers competing on lightweight, carbon-fiber, motorized surfboards capable of attaining speeds of 37 miles per hour. these ultra-light-weight, high-tech boards are the fastest water machines in the world that are self carried by its riders.
although the action is fast and furious, motosurf is also considered the safest motorsport in the world because the JetSurf boards are lightweight with minimal kinetic energy, and if a rider falls off the board, they cut the engine via the kill switch, so the board stops after a maximum of 5 meters. there is little to no danger to the racers, why other famous motorsport icons such as WrC, F1, motogpp and red Bull air race pilots are training and racing with the JetSurf boards.
the circuit will hit houston next month fresh off an international event the previous weekend at abu Dhabi in the United arab emirates. england, China, russia, South Korean, France, mexico, Brasil, Netherlands and miami, Florida here in the USa are other popular stops on the racing circuit. But JetSurf houston founder Jordan Davlin has long believed houston, as arguably one of the world’s most diverse and dynamic cities, is in prime position to embrace the cheapest, economical and environmentally most advanced and friendly motorsport in the world today.

Mark Chesnutt is one of Country’s true musical treasures. Critics have hailed him as a classic Country singer of the first order and some of Country music’s most elite entertainers from george Jones to george Strait echo this sentiment. mark Chesnutt’s stature is easily gauged: he has 14 No. 1 hits, 23 top ten singles, four platinum albums and five gold records. Country music critics and fans alike need look no further when it comes to Country music basics. When asked, mark Chesnutt will say, “it’s the music that has kept me around this long.” in a world that sometimes confuses style with substance, mark Chesnutt possesses both. remaining true to himself as a traditional country artist while still keeping up with the ever-changing Country landscape,
mark has a knack for picking great songs; delivering them with his world-class vocals; and with real heart-felt emotion. mark has set the bar for his generation not just for his being a consistent hit maker but also because of his love of genuine country music. mark Chesnutt’s personal integrity, as well as his principal to record a genuine Country song, has made him a fixture on radio and in the honky tonks. Chesnutt got his start in the honky-tonks of Beaumont, texas, learning from his father, Bob Chesnutt, a singer, record collector, and major fan of classic country music. playing along side his dad, one set at a time, mark embraced his father’s influence and began making a name for himself. mark sang covers by lefty, merle, george and Waylon to develop his unmatched crowd-pleasing rapport and his authentic Country style.

Navigators @ T-Bone Tom’s
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35
sPRiNG FeVeR - is one of my most favorite ills to succumb to, right up there with the Boogie Woogie Blues. one of my favorite ways of catching Spring Fever is an evening at t-Bone tom’s with the Navigators rocking the stage and in march, we caught it good! the Navigators don’t simply show up to play for the crowd and watch people eat. this band comes out with a premeditated full intentions of rocking out the house and making people move - there *is* a difference, and this band does it. the Navigators are randy hughes (lead guitar), galen medlenka (bass), Jeff hoke (percussion), Curtis Beinhorn (lead guitar), and Don Bonner (brass and woodwinds), and Dave Barnett (sound guy). Noticed the two lead guitars? and they all sing!
COCK-eYed seAGuLL - We’ve been following the open mic action over the years and in march, stopped in to catch a fine job from Jason Wilson with his extended set. asking about it, he shared he’s working on a larger band project and needed to shake out a few loose ends. Sounded fine to me. after Justin was a set of originals from Cisco ruiz and angie emerson that sounded studio ready — just need to fill out a few instrument parts. Open Mic @ Cock-Eyed Seagull according to angie, their recording project is on the near term horizon and something to watch for. We missed open mic stalwart Kevin Fenton, but never fear, the 11th annual ’60s Costume party with hourglass is on Friday, april 19. Bored at home watching streaming tV? go check out the open mic on thursdays and catch the creative efforts as they develop. iT’s A WRAP - my brackets were a mess this year, but that’s okay… our hometown baseball team is at it again for another season and our basketball team is in the playoffs. thanks to all who stopped and shared your stories. For those still behind the eight ball, all the best days will surely come. april is here, and that means patio season! get your chores done, and we’ll see you out there on the SCeNe!

The Damn Torpedoes & Nightbird @ Jackie’s Brickhouse
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 36
The dAMN TORPedOes - a tricky switchy name of the austin band that plays the region in tribute to tom petty and the heartbreakers. We’ve seen this group at the house of Blues, the redneck Country Club. having enjoyed the real petty and the heartbreakers years before like many of you, i find this band’s show to be enjoyable not only sonically but with their visual presentation as well. the band (ty hurless-lead Vox/guitar; tim Veillon-lead guitar/Back Vox; geno Stroia-Bass; James rannefeld-Drums; James reynolds-Keys) often shares billings with houston’s Nightbird — a Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood mac tribute providing listeners’ musical treats from the original petty/Nicks collaborations. When we spotted the joint billing in last month’s SCeNe magazine at Jackie’s Brickhouse, we knew a stop was in order. From the full house of rocking and grooving patrons, i wasn’t alone. Smart readers! ;-) remember the wretched winter we had earlier? turns out both band were playing shared billings in New Braunfels the night before and hurless came down with a case of laryngitis. Not good for a tge singer. luckily, an extended stint by Brooke alyson with Wolff delong helping fill hurless’s vocal absence. From what i could see, the audience didn’t mind one bit. as my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt would say, “Bravo!!!” this blending of these two bands that night displays an interesting ying and yang. i’ve seen hurless back up alyson before when needed and also note mike Campbell joining in on Fleetwood mac’s recent tour. then play on... TOuR sTOP CLeAR LAKe - last month, we checked out through the roots at Scout Bar. this San Diego-based independent label reggae/rock/electronic band sports a respectable following of over 81,000 on Facebook.
ttr is a prolific Cali-reggae band in the studios with 6 eps and 2 CDs under their belt and a packed schedule. i picked up copies of take You there and here to Stay. Both display thought stimulating graphical arts, credits to supporters, and photographic work in dire need of fill flash. musically well engineered and mixed, there’s an easy listening sound (rare these days) on their recordings much like they do live - studio clean.
While pleasant to listen to, missing was a grit that could be recognized clearly as their own. local reggae bands that possessed such uniqueness that come to mind include the likes of mama tried, Black grass gospel, grizzly and Cassette tape. Nonetheless, ttr appears to have withstood the test of time, still performing a packed schedule. ttr is led by lead vocalist evan hawkins and a talented supporting cast in taylor Boatwright (Drums, Vocals), Brady o'rear (Keys), Scott Curtis (lead guitar, Vocals) and Corey groove (Bass). these guys pack a big stage with huge lights and an incredibly capable fog machine.

Folks, we’ve got a jewel of a live music venue here in these parts as the folks at Scout Bar continually bring in what’s happening out on the national scene into our area. Continually bringing in something for everybody, Scout Bar is a live music venue i “know” the rest of houston wishes they had in their neighborhood and we’ve got it in ours!

OVeR The TOP - Which would be Santana at this year’s Santana @ houston livestock Show & rodeo. this year, we joined up Houston with a multi-generation crowd for an evening of the music legLivestock ends “in Search of mona lisa” tour. the playlist included practiShow & cally every one of his classic hits as well is musical muses from Rodeo his new ep. the band played nonstop the entire show and the energy of the performers electrified the entire Nrg stadium. the three main percussionist (that included mrs Santana on a full kit) not merely maintain the beat created a well woven principal layer of music, several time becoming the featured sound. Sanatana directed the nine piece band with merely eye contact through precise breaks and turnarounds. this was music for musicians with thoughtful imaginative videos - a gusto for the ages. a bit of music history: i was informed by readers that Smooth is the No. 2 most successful song ever according to Billboard magazine which says lots (the twist by Chubby Checker ranks No. 1 and Bobby Darrin’s mack the Knife is No. 3).
sCOTTY’s PuB ON The BAY - Folks, this is one cozy hangout along the 2094 corridor that has hosted many good times over the years for people on the SCeNe. last month, we enjoyed two live music shows that rolled in - peace project and an evening with keyboard soloist laura magers.
this is our second time to catch Peace Project @ Scotty’s Pub on the Bay peace project, a galveston/ houston-based band featuring Dave and mary Watson. With the band this evening was mike Solina (bass player from Spicolis) and Scott misner (a ninja caliber drum player whose played the kit for more bands you’d think possible).
i like the songs this band plays. according to one of the listeners in the audience, “this band plays the ‘really good’ old stuff you don’t often hear.” i agree! perhaps we will see peace project at one of the summer festivals along the 146 corridor this year…
laura magers is often seen on the SCeNe playing with myrna Sanders, Kozmic pearl and her own band risky Business. i’m sure if my predecessor (the late Jim Shortt) were to see a risky Laura Magers @ Business show, you’d get to read about it. this Scotty’s Pub was the first time i got to see her pull off a solo on the Bay show, which this music teacher from Soho did in strong fashion. guitarist Darrell masingale stepped in and joined laura for a couple numbers. Speaking of Soho, ever see Soho alums? they’re a friendly vibrant fun loving bunch and always seem comfortable out and about on the SCeNe. much like alums from Dickinson — as if they’re at home here. You think? laura and risky Business: Keep them on your watchlist. Cheers!

dONNie siMMONs - getting the chance to catch march madness and enjoy live music at Katie’s was a great way to welcome spring. this location known for hosting exquisite live music had Donnie Simmons in the house. it had been a few years since we last saw one of his shows and, boy, can this guy play! Donnie’s FB page tells us he’s from lexington, alabama (population ~800), and according to google, this town is a part of the Florence - muscle Shoals metropolitan which for those in the know, a music mecca. according to my ears, this connection makes sense. Katie’s Chief Bartender, Desiree describes a Donnie Simmons show like this, “this will bring you back to high school, back when everybody was pitching in for kegs.” according to drummer Joe Campise, “listening to Donnie is like turning your radio on in the ’70s.” For me, Simmons has a playlist and sound that reminded me of the days with a pioneer 8-track machine and a pair of both Kenwood home speakers and Jensen 6x9s. i seem to want to describe Donnie personally as a fun loving Joe Walsh type, fully capable on the guitar but with a wider range of vocals. these days Donnie travels light skipping the wall of sound for a Fender Blues Junior. the Blues Jr. is a straightforward amp with not many knobs and not often spotted on the live music scene. retired raceway announcer ted Jones was in the house and passed along the late luther rada would modify the innards of a Blues Jr. for his unique sound. randy hughes of the Navigators also gets great sound out of the Blues Jr. with his customized signal path and a specially built telecaster. Loose Notes
Spring Fever edition - hello good, people. i hope everybody made it through winter well. the madness of march was delightful this year. lots happening in the area with plenty of excellent live music. let’s go straight to some of what went down...
by Andy Eng Don Vickers Band @ T-Bone Tom’s
MARdi GRAs 2019 is in the books, and what fun! along with the festivities at this year’s Kemah parade and after party at t-Bone tom’s with the Don Vicker’s Band, we got to ride in two galveston parades with the partY parrotS who did things big, adding live music to the ride with the Black Swans and the Blaggards. Now just Black Swans @ Mardi Gras how cool is that?
the Black Swans is a new irish rock band led by Kristin Coyle (fiddle), Christian Weigand (guitar), Christopher piper (percussion), and Jon hom (Bass). according to Kristin, this band is a relatively new project based out of the mucky Duck neighborhood and chances are that readers have heard both Weigand and piper on the local live music scene,
the Blaggards are a powerhouse “Stout irish rock” band with gusto galore, led by patrick Delin (guitar and vocals), Chad Smalley (bass and vocals), michael mcaloon (drums) and Wes Barlow (fiddle). We’ve enjoyed this throughout the years on the SCeNe most recently at t-Bone tom’s.
When riding in a mardi gras parade, nothing is finer than a frenzied crowd and nothing works the crowd into a frenzy better than a good dose of irish rock to go with tossing stuff! lots of folks came out for the festivities in fine form this year! good show, people!

KEMAH: GATEWAY TO THE BAY • AND FUN!
9th Annual Kemah Crawfish Festival APRIL 19, 20 & 21
make plans to attend one of the biggest and — definitely the spiciest — event in the area as the Kemah Crawfish Festival returns Back to the Kemah for the ninth year on april 19, 20 and 21. City Parking Lot there will be plenty of crawfish, beer, live music, vendors and fun! and as always, in addition to crawfish, there will be plenty of great festival food.
one change this year is the event will be back at the City of Kemah’s recently refurbished parking lot on the corner of 6th Street and Bradford with panoramic views of both the lighthouse District and marina from the festival. Whether you plan “to keep calm and peel on,” or “go get your peel on,” partying and having a great time is on the top of the list of things to do.
“We will be cooking crawfish out of our cooking units and plan to produce several thousand pounds of delicious boiled crawfish!” said Doug Davenport of gulf Coast Festivals. these mudbugs are “spiced right and priced right” at $3.99 per pound on Friday and Saturday; and $1.99 per pound on easter Sunday. and you better bet they will taste fresh, too, since they are trucked in daily from farms in louisiana. in addition to the crawfish, the festival will offer other Cajun dishes and festival cuisine such as alligator, frog legs, hot dogs, hamburgers, louisiana crab legs, gyros, churros, turkey legs, funnel cakes, nachos, fried oreos, twinkies and pickles, and much more! “We are all about eating and music,” said Davenport. he recounted that in the years past, the event became one big dance floor. the live musical entertainment kicks off at noon on Friday. this is a family friendly event with bounce houses and other attractions for the kids.
if you have not been to the Kemah Crawfish Festival, Davenport offers this advice, “the earlier you get there, the better.” general admission is $8. Kids 12 and under are free. Vip tickets are $20 and include one-day admission into the festival and 3 pounds of prepaid crawfish on Friday or Saturday. it also includes an express line to pick up your crawfish pre-paid Vip crawfish. in addition, on Sunday, the Vip ticket gets you 6 pounds of crawfish. guests can buy additional crawfish and any other food and drinks at the festival. those ready to start the weekend early, can enter Friday at noon. the event hours are Friday from noon to 10 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and easter Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. purchase your tickets online at www.gulfcoastfestivals.com. get your tickets today!

Mark May (Katie’s Jam) Sunday, April 14 KATIE’S
the houston area rock music scene continues to make waves in the music industry at large, and a new group on the horizon is no exception. Formed less than a year ago, asleep in the Wake has been ringing a proverbial rock alarm that seemingly continues to sound off and gather more steam with each passing month.
“We’ve known one another much longer than we’ve been together as one group, and there was talk of starting a new project. hector [porras, on bass] started the band, and then we brought in paul Crosby [known for his former band Saliva] for a demo. and it just sort of went from there,” said guitarist and lead vocalist matt Neice.
the current lineup of Neice, mike mexas (guitar), hector porras (bass), and elijah Santucci (drums), draws together former members of well-known groups such as Saturate, treason, and melovine, and together form a powerful, multi-faceted rock sound which they all can trace back to music being ingrained in them from when they were very young.

Some might describe it as Deftones-ish,” Neice said.
Fans, other national acts, and record labels alike have taken notice in a short time. the band made their debut with none other than american postgrunge band Smile empty Soul, along with Dead Set red and the pretty Vacant last fall, and since their inception, they have played to numerous crowds in houston and beyond. - Continued on Page 42

Local Music Spotlight: Sherita Perez By sarah Piña
the story of Sherita perez is indeed one of music, as a local artist who has made a namesake for herself in houston and beyond — but it is also woven with an inspiring, on-going journey of a vibrant soul who has overcome so many odds to arrive where she is today, both musically and personally — though one could argue it’s hard to separate one from the other.

Saturday, April 6 CABO
“a lot of the inspiration for my songs comes from overcoming hardship,” said perez, a texas native whose velvety voice coupled with what could likely best be described as indie-folk, melodic tunes — as perez calls it, “high vibes, postgenre,” drawing on many sounds and styles — have garnered the attention of not only fans throughout the lone Star state, but throughout the country and world as well. “people along the way have tried to destroy me, and they failed. i’ve suffered and been through so much, which has made my writing that much more in-depth,” she said, recalling that this began around the age of 12 and has only progressed since with every journey.
“i’m self-taught. i learned the guitar to make these songs come to life. then when i was 21, i moved to New York City. my time there was so crucial to me as an artist,” she said. “i do remember spending a lot of time on the subway, rocking back and forth, hearing all the tones, and songs would just come into my head. But more than that, it was a steep learning curve. i had so much time alone, and it made me become the artist i would need to be to return to houston. New York is a place i credit as what really made me be a professional. it was hardcore.”

Thursday, April 11 KATIE’S
ten years later, perez returned to houston with many lessons learned and a fresh, strong new take on her musicianship.
“i left a country bumpkin and came back as someone who could really direct their ship. it was in this time i realized i was someone who couldn’t wait around for other people to help make these things happen, that i would have to do it for myself. i believed what i had was unique, and i needed to embrace myself.” this newfound sense of artistry and selflove has led to perez’s biggest endeavors to date. She has since released two eps, including h-town love (2016) and high Vibes (2018), and the single “Blue Skies,” which has had the most magnetic audience reception to date according to perez. Furthermore, as of press time, she had just filmed music videos for her most recent songs, and is currently on tour in New zealand. - Continued on Page 42
