Local Music Spotlight: In By Sarah Piña

the Aftermath

in the growing area list of fresh, hard/metal/alternative rock shows that are not to be missed, the face-melting, high-energy collective known as in the aftermath have quickly risen to the top.

the current lineup of Joe Perez (guitar), Jonathan torres (bass), Ralph Wallace (drums) and J.D. garza (vocals) continue to blow away audiences in the Clear Lake area and beyond, and though various members have known and/or played with one another over the years in different bands, the group as it stands now formed just less than two years ago — and even so, have rapidly achieved a namesake through electrifying performances that place them in a category all their own.

Chris Hardy & Matt Cash Every Sunday (Downstairs) CABO

“We had a mutual friend in high school, and i met Jon at a party,” said guitarist Perez. “it all sort of started back in 2007. he and i wanted to get a band together, but we really didn’t know what sound we were looking for at that time,” he said.

Fast-forward to post-graduation, and several changes through different bands, and ultimately, the band as it stands today came together a year and a half ago.

“that’s really where the band name comes from,” Perez said. “We had all been in different bands with different styles of music, which just didn’t work out – hence the name, in the aftermath, that’s where we sort of place ourselves,” he said. and finding a good combination can sometimes be the most difficult part for bands.

“it’s really hard to find a group of guys that play well and also get along. We all help each other out, especially when we’re writing songs. We really play off of one another and have a chemistry that i don’t see in a lot of other bands, and i really think that’s part of what sets us apart,” said drummer Ralph Wallace.

the distinct sound of in the aftermath is also a definitive part of placing the band in a recognizably different category.

“We all have so many different influences, but many that are the same as well. that’s what really ‘adds the sauce,’” drummer Ralph Wallace added with a laugh. “We get a lot of comparisons to Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust, and Korn,” he said, though among the numerous influences for each member of the band are specific musicians and groups as a whole such as Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland, tool, Primus, Dead Kennedys, alice in Chains, Pantera, audioslave, and the list goes on.

this multi-genre sound has brought them in a short time performing all around the houston area with the likes of Smile empty Soul, the texas hippie Coalition, C.J. Pierce of Drowning Pool fame, and most recently, 10 years. the notoriety gained from such shows has continued to lead in the aftermath on the trail to future success. - Continued on Page 29

the story of Coozablack and Sin City—the name enough on its own to pique one’s interest—is one of trial and error, a series of coincidences perhaps; but ultimately, one of such strong belief, passion, and drive, that success, coupled with a name and a sound that much like the band is like none other, was and is inevitable. the roots of the band trace back to 2008, and tell the story of a musician and entertainer on a mission. “i was a rapper first and always loved to entertain, i wanted to be an entertainer. i worked my way through the underground dance circuit, and opened up for Rick Ross in 2008. Watching the videos back that my brother ‘Big Reg’ always filmed, i eventually noticed an empty drum set in the background after watching it back, and i said to myself, how cool would it be to have a band back up what i wanted to do? i wanted a rock rock band, but also wanted it to be in a category all its own,” said frontman Cooza.

the year was 2009, and Cooza set out to put his vision together. after a series of auditions that he lined up from numerous responses to a Craigslist ad for a keyboard player, a drummer, and guitarists, various auditions were held and a band started falling into place.

“We had 12 variations of my band before it got to the band we know now,” Cooza said, reflecting on the trial and error, that, fast-forward to current day, led up to the current group in 2019 consisting of Cooza as the frontman, tyler Durden (bass), Jt Licious (guitar), and t-Wrecks (drummer). “What was to be our first really big show at that time several years ago, with huge names like Solider Boy and trina at the Verizon Wireless Center (now Revention), was not promoted well, and there was very little turnout,” he said. these hiccups, however, did not stop Cooza and were merely a bump in the road to growing success. through a growing relationship with Rod Ryan of the Rod Ryan Show, other key players at 94.5 FM the Buzz, and songs created specifically for the houston texans that were put in rotation on the show as well as used for when the Superbowl was in houston, Coozablack & Sin City became a name and sound known for being in a category all its own, a hip-hop rock band with a distinctive mix of progressive rock and an aggressive rhyme style.

Cheers to 20 Years of TOPWATER GRILL By Twila Lindblade

there’s absolutely nothing better than enjoying the spring weather on the patio along the galveston Bay with cold drinks, friends and amazing seafood. topwater grill is the prime place to dine along the bay and has an incredible ambience that nothing can replicate.

it’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since topwater grill opened its doors. Robert Jakubas opened the restaurant on May 27, 1999, in San Leon, overlooking the galveston Bay at april Fool Point Marina.

Robert and his wife ginny say they are moved by the support their restaurant has received throughout the years, and said they are happy to remain a staple in the community.

“We’d like to thank our customers for their support in helping us reach this milestone! We still think of ourselves as a small family marina, that with our customers’ support, has developed into a 300+ seat family-style destination restaurant where you can gather your friends and family together for good times and good fresh local seafood overlooking gorgeous galveston Bay,” ginny said. although the restaurant underwent a complete rebuild in the last decade due to hurricane ike, topwater grill has always aimed to maintain its welcoming atmosphere for both its new and veteran patrons. one recent addition to their outside patio is that all outdoor seating is now glider seating along the building and around the marina.

“i could spend hours there, in fact i have,” joked Kim Day, a lifelong Bay area resident. “they have some of the best food, and it is incredibly peaceful and relaxing to dine along the water in comfort.”

topwater grill has also been praised by loyal customers for their specialty cocktails. For their anniversary month, they launched the grand Kamikazetini cocktail, which is a “perfect blend of nostalgia and new, just like topwater grill,” ginny said.

“When we opened the restaurant in May 1999, the Kamikaze was a popular shot in all the bars. So, i thought we’d create an updated version of that shot into a martini,” she said. “tito’s Vodka was happy to help us celebrate our milestone, and they are actually making a donation, in our name, to the charity of our choice. We chose the galveston Bay Foundation, a non-profit we support that has been preserving, protecting and enhancing galveston Bay for more than 25 years.” the grand Kamikazetini is a blend of tito’s vodka, grand Marnier and fresh lime juice shaken to perfection and served as a martini.

< GLIDE THERAPY: Back in 2015, topwater grill began adding to their outdoor seating experience with the addition of a several roller gliders. "the roller gliders are our version of the traditional picnic table and benches together with its own umbrella fabric sunshade that glide together. it's a way to enjoy our fabulous food with a cold beverage in a unique patio setting by the bay!" said ginny Jakubas. More recently, topwater has upgraded all of the outdoor waterfront patio tables and chairs to glider seating.

Wayne Toups @ Kemah Crawfish Festival

Loose Notes

has this spring been a blast? there is plenty reason to believe so with lots happening. Let’s run down a sample of what all that went down to see why…

by Andy Eng

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WEATHER & CRAWFISH Which was the 9th annual Kemah Crawfish Festival. this year’s event was splendid! Recall the maddeningly lines the first couple years and the late winter we had last year? you can forget those days. Despite attempts with the 146 expansion to mess things up, Davenport and his team knocked this year’s event waaaaay out of the park with what i believe was the best setup i’ve ever seen at the Kemah Lighthouse District parking lot. Vendors were plentiful with something for everybody, there was ample food and drink for all, serving lines ran great, the football field-sized dining area was perfect for everybody and the fantastic showing by our CChS JrRotC assured everybody had a comfortable experience. May i please go on? the builder of the biggest Crawfish Cooking contraption on the planet showed up in person and operBobby D Sawyer @ ated his cooking bus creation as it was intended to be operated. oh…. and Kemah Crawfish the live music? Bobby D Sawyer, Jarrod Sterrett and the hired guns, and Festival grammy-winning Wayne toups kept the entertainment flowing the entire event. traffic on 146 had toups running late for the show – as he should have taken the ferry. i was impressed how Sterrett and the hired guns were able to extend their set while toups fought traffic, bringing back Sawyer for a few duets, extended lead solos and the Josh Garrett @ like. Such things happen on the live Kemah Crawfish music circuit, and this was handled Festival well. With the cool breezes of spring flowing through Kemah, toups and his band played their entire show this year. he has an interesting way of sizing up his crowd by vamping on a note or two while his band plays zydeco openers, almost as if he’s drawing energies from the crowd. toups then unleashes, taking the crowd into a higher level of sizzling fun, which i’ve no doubt was how he earned his grammy. other such festivals have been appearing on the map these days. i believe we’ve got the best one here.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 39 TUNE OUT CANCER - it’s a safe bet you either know somebody who has had this hideous disease or have been afflicted yourself. it’s also a safe bet that if called upon to support a benefit to fight cancer, the turnout would be genuine, which is exactly what happened at Scout Bar & Pub Level in april where the Support Local Music community gathered for their tune out Cancer Benefit, a two-day event with proceeds going to the texas Children’s hospital. according to event organizer, Khris harding, “We just posted on social media we were doing this show and all the musicians showed up” with sponsors, vendors and over 40 music acts that crossed the genre spectrum from across greater houston Metroplex.

Tune Out Cancer Benefit @ Scout Bar & Pub Level

We stopped in and caught a several really good acts not typical in these parts: Coozablack and Sin City, Wayne Breez, Jypsey Rose (Nominated h-town "Break-out artist 2019"), Chris hardy (SLM Best Local acoustic Performance 2018), Bronco Junior, and Calling Chase. Based on this sample size of six, all six put on what i would call a headliner show. What this means to me is that while we know we’ve got great live music here in our area, it’s all over. great job people! Support local music!

Jerry Diaz & Hanna’s Reef @ T-bone Tom’s

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 38

TROP ROCK VENUE OF THE YEAR - We missed ezra Charles Saturday afternoon show on easter weekend, but made up for this just fine by catching Jerry Diaz and hanna’s Reef. Jerry and his village of followers were key when it came to bringing the trop Rock Venue of the year honors to t-Bone tom’s – an honor well-deserved. Musically, this band is one of the few that own a sound that’s uniquely their own – easily recognizable while strolling in from the parking lot. this evening, Ken Reynolds was filling in on lead guitar providing a nice sizzle making me wonder is it possible that this band could pull off a few Santana numbers. i’m really not coming up with any Santana songs in the Parrothead circles, though, the two styles of music overlap similar regions; maybe, just maybe. as an established crowd pleaser, a Jerry Diaz and hanna’s Reef’s show falls into the “what the doctor ordered” category when it comes to setting one’s head on straight. Patio season is upon us! Cheers!

TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE - which would mean Scout Bar and in april, was zepparella on their Spring tour 2019. this band, proudly posts of their “intent on bringing the passion, the beauty, the aggression, the musicality of Led zeppelin alive.” you can tell lots about a band by the fans that come to their shows and a zepparella fan gets it. “Followers recount the number of shows they’ve seen, and the regulars notch 40, 50, over 100 shows on their belts, traveling between states to see the shows.” Me? i’ve only seen their show three times but apt to keep an eye out for their return shows in the future. For the rest? of those there, anna Kristina said that we were “such a lovely audience!” Not bad for the rock & roll SCeNe, eh? in my time, i saw the band switch out the important bass position with holly West and the return of lead vocalist anna Kristina. i’ll fess that i really liked the band before the change and like this lineup even better. Band founder, Clementine, on the drums had a kit she was able to rely on this night and pulled off the Zepparella @ Moby Dick Scout Bar solo to perfection. Lead guitarist, gretchen Menn, is an accomplished classically trained guitarist and is brilliant on the stage. My only critique is how she stayed with the Les Paul the entire evening when swapping to a Fender Strat would have better match the tones of a few selected numbers. Doesn’t matter. i’ll be coming to their shows again, and if you like Led zeppelin and haven’t heard this band, may i please suggest you give their show a try? - Continued on Page 35

RESOLUTION BUSTED - Been trying my darndest to catch some of the regular Jay Hooks @ Katie’s Bar talent at Katie’s this year. Feeling a bit derelict with my neglect. Nonetheless, the streak continues where i pick a night, any night, where there’s a name on the marquee playing whom i’ve never heard, and left the Bacliff live music mecca totally impressed. in april, it was Jay hooks. a little sandbagging here, hooks is held in high regard by historians of houston live music over the decades. in Mean gene Kelton’s book, “gigs from hell”, Kelton describes the influence of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan that produced a number of guitarists playing his covers including hooks. Just so happened that hooks already had established a solid foundation from playing the blues on the houston club scene. hooks dropped off the music scene for a while leaving many to wonder about his whereabouts. he appears to have Rip Van Winkle’d a return into this day with little social media presence. to hear of his shows, one would need to follow either the Blues hound or the SCeNe, so here you have it, an inside scoop!. More good news: While hooks was well supported with Bob emmons and Joe Campise (bass & drums) on this evening in april, word is he’s got his chops up with mention that he’s putting together a band again. i’m wondering who will get the nod… Stay tuned!

11TH ANNUAL ’60s PARTY - the ’60s…. What an inter- Hourglass @ Cockeyed Seagull esting era… a time when “groovy” came into being, and we landed on the moon. the era left us with was lots of really good music which was plenty good reason to join up with the happy flock at the Cock-eyed Seagull for their 11th annual ’60s party. always fun! the Seagull house band, hourglass, was on stage taking everybody back to that magical era. Full band? Check… Black lights and velvet posters? Check…. groovy vibe in the air, hip costumes and a fun time? Check and check! Rejoining hourglass this evening was Danny Douglass with guest appearances from John honda and Joey Wainwright helped put the house of Born again hippies in blissful flashback mode. twas a party for the ages!.

Speaking of the magical ’60s, may i indulge and share a moment to reflect on the wonderful 60th surprise birthday party i unwittingly walked in on at Jackie’s Brickhouse. i arrived under the guise that i was attending a family benefit on behalf of my SCeNe bosses. Little did i know my wife Patty had co-conspirators and had invited many of my family and friends to surprise me as i walked into one of the rooms. i'm still unclear from this event. <lol> you guys – friends new and old – blew me away!!! these awesome people took fabulous care to plan and carry out. this gathering that took this humbled shutterbug waaaay out there beyond my comfort zone. thanks to the great people and the many musicians who made it happen. My gratitude! it was a doozie! (Photos on Page 32)

BOU BOY’Z - Last summer, we saw a David Joel solo gig at Crazy alan’s Swamp Shack and knew a follow up was in order and in april,

David Joel Band @ Jackie’s Brickhouse

did just that at Jackie’s Brickhouse. Born in Beaumont and starting his musical playing at age 9, Joel continues the steady stream of music talent from this east texas town. this evening, David had his full band and put on a super show. i like the way Joel opens a show letting the band warm up the audience for a song, taking time to dial in the sound, opening with a crowd pleasing cover and going straight into his strong originals. Before show time, David was busy mixing with the people in the audience. Catching up with old friends and making new ones. his band is a fully seasoned cadre of talented musicians that appears rock solid no matter where the stage may be. We scored two of Joel’s CDs “David Joel” and “the game” which includes songs recorded with Mickey gilley and received a warm reception on the regional airwaves. i enjoyed how easy it was to follow the songs lyrics, well mixed and catchy. May i recommend you catch a David Joel show when he is here on the SCeNe? he’s a busy entertainer around the region and most enjoyable.

PATIO SEASON - With spring upon us in the Clear Lake area, Monkey Bar was a place to be. the Monkey Bar has been for year-in, year-out, a place that has always been a friendly place to hang out on the patio, catch up with friends, loosen up and enjoy live music. in april, i stopped in to catch Randy Wade and Jeremiah Marichalar of twisting tides. Self described as an “acoustic Duo, five instruments, and five genres.” We only had time to catch a couple numbers that evening, caught passages of sonic creativity and will follow up.

We remember when Raf (winner of the 2018 SLM Best Local Bassist) first appeared on the SCeNe nearly a decade ago with Dev electric and later, a stint with the hunger. the man has clearly taken root in the area and recently starring in his new lead role as Dad. as for the whole band? Crisp, clean and fun! Party on!

when you hear it, it’s our spin on this song and that’s the damn song you’ll want in your car!” he said.

For those that haven’t caught a Coozablack and Sin City show yet, the best advice is really to just buckle up and expect your jaw to drop repeatedly. “you’re going to see a band who seems part of an international tour. you’re not gonna say to yourself, ‘oh, those guys will be okay one day.’ No. you’re gonna say to yourself, ‘Damn, who are they? Damn!, what is this, are they on tour?” said Cooza.

Coozablack and Sin City: Continued From Page 43

“it’s been great, 94.5 has been really responsive to us. our song ‘i am’ has been getting a lot of love on the station; it’s one i really like to perform, and it bangs hard in the car too,” he said. as far as the writing process for their songs, it’s definitely a collaboration.

“i pen the lyrics, and the music is done in rehearsal. JP might catch a riff, and then we just go off of it. everything we do is ours, and very personal,” he said. “’Karma’ is an original of ours, for example, that is fun to perform, and one that everyone gravitates to. But it’s actually a true story sprinkled with fiction about a woman who was being physically abused, the individual was caught who was creating the abuse and they came up missing. So there’s that lyric that goes, ‘Don’t cry about it now, the damage is done’… this is what it’s about. it’s about things we believe in as well,” Cooza said.

Coozablack and Sin City will destroy the stage next at Scout Bar on Saturday, May 4, along with headliners (heD) p.e., and co-liners andrew Boss and Kerosene Shores. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show begins at 8 p.m. advance tickets and ViP tables are currently on sale through the Scout Bar website. Day of show tickets are not guaranteed, so grab them now! -------------------------------------------

Who inspires you? Not to sound cheesy, but my wife and kids. i work hard knowing exactly why i do it. i love you Matthew, aaron, and Jennifer!

Co-worker Samra had this to say about Guns: “When i first arrived at Jackie’s Brickhouse years ago, guns was there to guide me through my new territory. She has always been kind, patient and possessed a huge heart then, and even now. She is truly beautiful inside and out.”

Most recently, performance-wise Clear Lake residents at Scout Bar’s tune out Cancer Music Fest 2019 were stopped in their tracks and completely blown away in March — presumably many of whom were seeing the band for the first time — which was further evidenced by the explosive response and excitement of the crowd there, and those wanting to know just who this band was after the show, in addition to the raving feedback and postings on various social media platforms which followed. all of this is really just the beginning of Coozablack and Sin City, however.

“We believe in the vision we have and that’s what has kept us going. an eP may be coming soon. More dates are always coming. But there’s more, we want more. We want to pull up in the back of stadiums, we're looking to arenas. i envision us in those spaces. We study musical icons because that’s where we see this, where we see ourselves. if you don’t have that vision, where will you go?” said Cooza. For now, however, Clear Lake residents should consider themselves lucky to catch a Coozablack and Sin City show locally, while they can. though they regularly play throughout houston, after the tune out Cancer Music Fest 2019 performance, they were quickly asked back to wreck the Scout Bar stage once again in May, where Cooza promises a big surprise.

“We gonna do that song on May 4. it’s undoubtedly classic. you will know it

SPACE CENTER HOUSTON LAUNCHES SNOOPY TOUR

the nonprofit Space Center houston and houston arts alliance, a local arts and culture organization whose principle work is to implement the City of houston’s vision, values, and goals for its arts grantmaking and civic art investments are excited to be a part of a NaSa tour featuring Snoopy. NaSa and Peanuts Worldwide is a multiyear Space act agreement, building on a historic partnership that began during the apollo missions of the 1960s.

Worlds collide in the most wildly imaginative and colorful way as the houston arts alliance welcomes the Peanuts global artist Collective to houston’s expanding public parks, downtown business community, and on its history-making NaSa campus with a new art installation on display at Space Center houston.

this unprecedented partnership between Peanuts Worldwide, the houston arts alliance, houston Parks Board, Space Center houston and Brookfield Properties brings to houstonians public art re-imaginings of Charles M. Schulz’s beloved, iconic characters by four of the world’s most acclaimed contemporary artists. the larger-than-life installations will be on view indefinitely at some of the city’s most popular and visited landmarks.

the Peanuts global artist Collective, presented by Peanuts Worldwide, launched a year ago with an ambitious public art initiative spanning seven international cities: Paris, Seoul, New york, San Francisco, Berlin, tokyo and Mexico City. Curated by the esteemed, leading art curators at Culture Corps, the project features the work of seven elite artists. Four of them—Nina Chanel abney, aVaF, FriendsWithyou and Kenny Scharf—will pepper their creations throughout houston.

appropriately entitled “the heavens and the earth,” the adventure began late last month at Space Center houston during NaSa’s 50th anniversary celebrations of apollo 10. to mark this milestone, Scharf has unveiled his out-of-this-world rendition of Charlie Brown and Snoopy--uniquely-wrapped around an 18’x15’ NaSa iSS Module. the public can watch Scharf paint a piece of art live, participate in hands-on Pop-Up Science Labs to learn about how NaSa explores the cosmos, and meet Snoopy in-person. Scharf’s iconography celebrates the longstanding Peanuts-NaSa partnership, including that famous moment in time when NaSa named the apollo 10 command and lunar modules “Charlie Brown” and “Snoopy,” respectively. (apollo 10, which orbited the moon, served as a dress rehearsal for the historic apollo 11 moon landing in July 1969.)

“We are thrilled to bring an iconic institution like Peanuts to houston,” says Leigh Smith, Board Chair of the houston arts alliance. “Working with Space Center houston on this project is especially exciting, like bringing those characters home. We were also delighted to have Brookfield and the Parks Board as partners. Peanuts characters, as re-imagined through the work of these remarkable artists, will appear all over the city—in a way that lets every houstonian and visitor enjoy them.”

Painting For Pups: From Page 16

How does it make you feel when you see a found rock posting? it brightens my entire day! in just a few short months Painting For Pups is 377 members strong and counting. in what seems to have become a “Me” world; it feels so wonderful knowing that there are still people who are willing to be the voice for those who are unable to defend themselves.

What is the farthest a rock has travelled? Quartzsite, arizona. it’s especially wonderful because a new member found a rock in Kemah. She loved the idea so much that she formed a group with her friends. they are now Painting For Pups in arizona. Several rocks have been found and posted from there. ROCK HIDING TIPS:

1. hide in public places, not on private property.

2. the rocks should be easily seen and accessible. 3. Do not place in grassy areas where mowers and other yard equipment could be damaged.

4. the group is public and is not limited to the texas Bay area. Check it out at www.facebook.com/groups/780931578917059/

Featured Artist: CONSUELA MOYERS

PAINTING FOR PUPS

By Kelley Dawson in September 2017, Dickinson resident Consuela Moyers read the SCeNe Magazine’s article about a painted rock-hunting group. intrigued by the idea of painting, hiding, and hunting rocks, Moyers joined the group. She told she saw potential for the activity to become more than just fun.

What inspired you to start a painted rock hunting group? i have a rescue dog named Bandit. actually, he rescued me back in 2010. he was then trained as a service animal and has easily become one of the greatest things that has ever happened in my life. We spend virtually every moment of every day together, and i can’t imagine a life without him. he’s a local hit with places like Jackie’s Brickhouse and Lonestar grill. i always ask myself, “What if they would have euthanized him?” What a loss it would have been. i decided to start my Facebook group, Painting For Pups. it supports the shelters who do not euthanize; those that give every life a fighting chance.

How does Painting for Pups work? For every rock that is found and posted onto the Painted for Pups Facebook page, one meal will be donated to feed a pooch in a no-kill animal shelter. a card including all the instructions is placed beneath each rock. the finder of the rock joins the Painting for Pups group and posts a photo of the rock. then, the rock is re-hid for others to find and repost. Can community members join your cause? yes! i would really love to have painters join the group, paint, and hide along. anyone can join Painting For Pups on Facebook. Members can copy instruction cards to lay underneath rocks or request a template.

How often do you deliver meals and how many meals have been donated to date? i do not have a schedule on delivery. i drop meals off to a shelter whenever i receive donations or have the weekend to pick up food. i stay ahead of the game though. i can personally confirm 875 meals to date. Do you have assistance? i purchase most of the food, but also there are a couple of members that donate to their local shelter. the company i work for, onshore Pipeline Services, in Kemah recently donated 200 meals.

Opus Bistro & Steakhouse

Makes Encore Appearance at South Shore Harbour Resort By Shawn Domingues

after a two-year hiatus, local favorite, opus Bistro & Steakhouse, has reopened in their new home inside the hotel at the South Shore harbour Resort. originally located in Clear Lake Shores, opus Bistro originally opened January 2010. For seven years, the Bistro thrived, earning a reputation as one of the area’s premiere restaurants until hurricane harvey forced the restaurant to close. Meanwhile, owners Charlie Felts and (the late) Chris Simon had already opened their new venture, opus ocean grille (1510 Marina Bay Dr., Building #124, Kemah) but were looking for a new location for the original opus Bistro & Steakhouse when they were approached by South Shore harbour hotel executives who were wanting a restaurant inside their hotel that could satisfy the dinner crowd. opportunity met desire, and opus Bistro found a new home. Construction was completed in January 2019, and the Bistro reopened their doors in early February 2019.

opus Bistro was known for their five-star continental cuisine and impeccable service, and they are staying the course, playing the hits, so to speak, in their encore performance. and although much of the menu is the same, with classics like their Crab Cake appetizer, Coquille St. Jacques, Red Snapper with Shrimp and Crabmeat and asparagus Parmesan appetizer. the new executive Chef Robert Kennedy has put his own spin on the dishes with plans to add new menu items over the next few months. they will also have featured dishes throughout the week and chef specials on the weekends as well.

“overall response has been great,” said general Manager Brent holubec, “the regular customers from the old opus Bistro (location) are simply thrilled that we have reopened. the fact that it is in the South Shore harbour Resort is basically an added bonus because of the views, the pool, and proximity to the marina and South Shore harbour residents.” Situated in the corner above the newly remodeled oasis pool, the new space is expansive with a long wall of windows in the dining room offering incredible views of the marina and pool below (which is lit up at night adding to the overall ambiance). in addition to regular tables, there is also booth seating in the dining area. a fireplace located next to the extensive wine rack keeps the large space warm and cozy during the cooler months. the bar area is a bit more casual; and given the fact that opus Bistro stocks their well with tito’s, Bacardi, Jack and titanium tequila (typically considered “call” liquors) and a $5.50 price tag for well drinks… the bar stays pretty busy. a large outdoor patio offers additional seating with unobstructed marina views and both water and fire features to set the mood and continue the ambiance outside. Banquet areas are available for private parties, and there is plenty of space in the dining room to host large parties.
