King’s BierHaus, the german/american restaurant with communal seating, a huge imported beer selection and full bar, an outdoor Biergarten and gourmet sausages recently opened in League City.

the independently owned Rowdys Dance Hall, which took over the former Big texas Dance hall location in Webster’s Challenger Plaza, recently opened bringing high-energy entertainment, live music, cold drinks and a fun atmosphere for dancing the night away.

Last month, the area witnessed the demolition of the former outriggers building under the Kemah Bridge along

the Seabrook waterfront. But on a positive note, many of the most popular outriggers menu items, including outriggers tacos, burgers and gumbo, have reemerged at the recently opened HooDoo Cajun Kitchen on the new giant 3000square-foot patio next to Voodoo hut at the entrance of the Kemah Lighthouse District.

Congratulations to Mario’s Pizza and Pasta (Seabrook) on their move to their new 2100 e. naSa Parkway location. open for lunch and dinner, regulars will be thrilled that they carried over the tradition of their popular salad buffet. Did you know they deliver not only to homes, but also to nearby hotels and marinas, too? Remember local restaurateur Daniel Costello (formerly of Carrabba’s Webster)? he’s got some big news. Stay tuned to the SCene for an update. Be sure you congratulate all these local businesses, and let them know you saw them mentioned in the SCene!

BIGGEST PERFORMANCE BOAT EVENT IN TEXAS RETURNS

TEXAS OUTLAW CHALLENGE returns to town June 19 - 23

The Texas Outlaw Challenge, the top annual high-performance boat event in Texas and one of the most respected in North America, returns to the Waterfront Capital of Texas for the twelfth installment this month for an action-packed weekend plus of activities on and off of the water. Every year it seems the event couldn’t get any bigger, better or more dynamic, but event founder Paul Robinson always proves his team is up for the challenge with some new tweaks and additions to the schedule. For example, one year they added the now annual Thursday night “STAMPEDE Street Party” in Kemah’s entertainment district. This serves as a great social to kickoff the heart of the weekend activities and it also allows the general public an up-close and personal look at millions and millions in jaw-dropping horsepower for land and sea via an impressive collection of car, bike, truck and boat displays. Another popular past addition to the event schedule is the spectacular “SHOTGUN Parade” of boats through the Kemah/Clear Lake Channel in advance of Saturday’s big “GUNSLINGER Poker Run.” Seeing, and hearing, this awe-inspiring formation of high-performance boats work their way past the Kemah Boardwalk is truly a must-witness event. More recently, in 2017, the event worked a deal with the U.S. Coast Guard and the seven municipalities (Seabrook, Nassau Bay, Kemah, El Lago, Pasadena, Clear Lake Shores, League City) touching Clear Lake to move the popular Friday “National SHOOT-OUT Championship Competition” from the open waters of Galveston Bay to the protected and viewing-friendly waters of Clear Lake. This eliminated the need to catch a boat ride out into the bay to watch some of the most dynamic action of the weekend as spectators were able to witness the action from the shores of Clear Lake, opening yet another aspect of the weekend to a wider audience.

The impact that the Texas Outlaw Challenge makes locally (both in terms of economic impact and supporting local charities) grows every year. The event has donated more than $100,000 since 2008 including $50,000 donated to Harvey Relief through generous event participant and sponsor donations. The proceeds have helped the following local charities: Shriners Children’s Hospital, The Bridge Over Troubled Waters Women’s Shelter, Boys & Girls Harbor, Clear Creek Environmental Foundation, Kemah Lions Club, Seabrook Rotary, Seabrook Marine Group, Galveston-Houston Families Exploring Down Syndrome, and various Veterans groups. The event also has a substantial economic impact that is estimated at well over $1 million each year with a more significant impact anticipated in 2019.

ways Friday night’s “Miss OUTLAW Bikini Contest” will be open to the public, but this year will be split between two waterfront venues (Cabo and Barge 295) in order to better handle the overfill crowds arriving by land and sea. The public will also be welcome to the first (Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack) and last (Topwater Grill) stop of the STEEL HORSE STAMPEDE Bike & Car Rally and Poker Run on Sunday to close out the weekend.

One new addition to the schedule that will be exclusive to guests, sponsors, VIPS and participants is the “OUTLAWS to the MAX Gala & Awards Ceremony” at the huge Marine Max waterfront showroom and marina in Seabrook. “Because the event has gotten so big, the challenge has become which venues can accommodate you,” Robinson explained. “We like to enjoy each other’s company, along with all of our new friends, as a group, but we’ve never been able to do that in a big finale. Outlaws to the Max will allow us to extend Bringing more events that are accessible to the general public, not our hospitality to everybody. It will allow us to do a grand Casino just the boaters coming from all over the globe, is always a priority Night with live entertainment.” for Robinson and his staff. This year, Wednesday’s “SHOOTER PreCheck out the opposite page for a complete lineup of events Party” will kick off the schedule in a now home, Seabrook’s Barge coming this month for the 12th Annual Texas Outlaw Challenge. 295 (formerly the Turtle Club) and will be open to the public. Featured Chef:

Chef Robert Kennedy Opus Bistro & Steakhouse

2500 South Shore Blvd. • 281.334.5225

What’s your Background/experience: i have lived and traveled all over this great nation of ours. growing up in alaska and living everywhere from new York, Los angeles, Chicago, miami, indiana and many points in between.

i joined the marine Corps in 1995 and served honorably for 4.5 years. after my discharge from the Corps, i moved my family down to South Florida where i began working in the travel industry at Carnival Cruise Lines. after a Pot Luck Luncheon i decided i enjoyed cooking and headed off to Culinary School at the art institute of Fort Lauderdale (Florida) where i earned a degree in Culinary arts.

my first kitchen gig was with a classically trained chef from england at Le Bistro in Lighthouse Point, Florida. it was there were that i learned fast and hard what kitchen life was really like as there were only three of us running evening service. Chef / owner put me on the pantry, dessert, appetizers and even as the dishwasher, all at once!

opened americas Backyard and the green Room, two local Fort Lauderdale night clubs before moving onto Steak 954 in the W hotel on Ft Lauderdale Beach in 2009. there i worked every outlet in the hotel from main restaurant (Steak 954), the Pool Kitchen, in Room Dining and Banquet Kitchen. i bounced around between breakfast, lunch and dinner service. i actually fell in love with breakfast service the most and ended up

back at Steak 954 as lead breakfast cook.

Fast forward to 2016 when i moved to texas. my first kitchen job in texas was at the Redneck Country Club in Stafford. i started on the line and rose through the ranks and took over as Sous Chef and eventually the executive Chef of the restaurant. i stayed with them for approximately 2.5 years before joining mr. Felts and helping him relaunch opus Bistro. Your Specialty: During culinary school i found my calling with Steak houses. i've always enjoyed grilling and cooking meat.

Signature Dish: my signature dish i would have to say is Slow Braised Short Ribs with a decadent red wine Demi Sauce. the slow cooking process gives the meat time to tenderize to fall off the bone deliciousness.

Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? i have cooked for many celebrities over my career including Kenny Rogers, Cindy Crawford and Drew Bledsoe and Slash, guitarist. i was also michael Berry (local radio host) personal Chef before joining opus Bistro. Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: taste! taste! taste! its the key to consistency.

GOiNG WiTh ThE fLOW Featured Artist: DiANNE DuGGAN

By Kelley Dawson Born into an artistic family, Dianne Duggan has been going with the flow of her creative relatives and recently with the flow of her alcohol ink paintings. Duggan’s aunt painted portraits and her grandmother designed jewelry. her uncle was a veterinarian who also illustrated vet medicine text books. Duggan told she was often encouraged to create anything she was interested in. her dad would purchase the art supplies for her next imaginative endeavor.

Duggan stated her dad was a chemist. While in high school, he handmade her first set of oil paints. Duggan said her dad built a photography dark room in their garage. he “gesso-ed” (white paint mix) the exterior wall and instructed, “Paint! there you go and if you don’t like it, paint it again.”

Duggan shared she didn’t attend college. “i married young and had kids. i worked in sales and marketing, but didn’t really pursue art for those 25 years,” she informed.

Completely self-taught; Duggan landed a job at naSa Langley Research Center in Virginia. She produced concept drawings for use during Senate appropriations hearings. Duggan disclosed it has just been the last three years she began pursuing art again. She works with many mediums including oils, water colors, acrylics, alcohol and inks. Duggan’s ink creations have become quite popular. She’s even hosting workshops now. “it’s an incredible medium; almost uncontrollable. it’s what makes it so challenging and rewarding. the vibrant colors are spectacular, and the color intensity is delicious,” expressed Duggan.

She explained there is a chemical reaction with the alcohol and ink. She creates the works on tiles or special plastic paper called yupo. “the ink seems to float, and the alcohol displaces it,” instructed Duggan. She said the entire world around her is inspiring. as the niece of a veterinarian and an avid birder; Duggan loves animals, wild-life, and nature.

She declared, “i love all god’s creations. i’m not into painting cityscapes, but landscapes. it may seem limiting, but it’s limitless.”

the effect of light on subjects is another of Duggan’s inspirations. it is reflected in the depth and tangible textures of her paintings.

Duggan acknowledged, “i have so many paintings in my head and not enough time in my life time to do them all.” her fine art pieces are extraordinary. her ink works live and breathe with unique patterns and vivid colors. “art gives me joy,” proclaimed Duggan. She enjoys giving people something that they love; especially a meaningful pet portrait.

the Space Shuttle Program brought reusable spacecraft into reality. By creating a craft that could be relaunched quickly, naSa made traveling to space more accessible and led to the creation of things like the international Space Station (iSS).

SpaceX continues this tradition with its reusable rocket program. as part of its Falcon 9 rocket series, SpaceX has proven it can launch, land and reuse a stage of a rocket. the future of space travel is reusable rockets. thanks to the generosity of SpaceX, visitors to Space Center houston will get an up-close look at that future for yourself.

WABOS Water Sports 2515 NASA Parkway Seabrook, TX 77586 713-501-0516

in a new exhibit coming this summer, the Falcon 9 core, or first stage, B1035 will be displayed horizontally and elevated 14 feet off the ground near independence Plaza. it’s one of only two SpaceX Falcon 9 boosters on display and the first commercial space exhibit for Space Center houston. guests will walk underneath this marvel of reusable space technology and learn more about how it is making space more accessible. the core itself is about 41 meters tall, 3.6 meters in diameter and weighs 27 tons when empty. When full of propellant, it weighs 438 tons. its nine engines merlin 1D help it lift payloads into space and land the core safely on the ground. together with a second stage, it’s known as the Falcon 9 v1.2 (Block 3). the core is equipped with extendable landing legs that deploy as the core gets closer to the ground. as it approaches its landing target, two retro burns are performed to ease the rocket into a safe landing.

our newest addition launched as part of two naSa missions. the first, CRS-11, was a resupply mission to iSS. this core acted as the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket that propelled a Dragon spacecraft into orbit. CRS stands for Commercial Resupply Service and is part of naSa’s contract with SpaceX to provide u.S.-based supply launches to iSS. this mission launched June 3, 2017 and was the first time a Dragon spacecraft was reused.

B1035 flew again Dec. 15, 2017, marking the first time naSa allowed a reusable rocket stage to be reflown for one of its missions. SpaceX had previously reflown a booster, but for private company launches. it was also the first time a reflown core landed at Lz-1, the landing zone at Cape Canaveral. all previous previously flown stage landings were done on SpaceX’s automated drone ships. after this second mission, B1035 was retired.

this marvel of modern technology will open for public viewing later this summer.

Atomic Tiki Bar: From Page 44

not wanting to sound cliché, Suzanne explained, “it really is all about the customer experience for us, we want our guests to feel special, and we cater to their needs; providing special requests for alcohol if we don’t have it, we’re willing to get it for you.” testament to the level of their customer appreciation – one of their regulars, who just recently moved to the area from minnesota and gets homesick every once in a while, was sent a memento from her friends back home; Suzanne had it framed to hang up behind the bar so she can be reminded of home whenever she comes in. the open-aired bar downstairs offers karaoke every other Friday night and a DJ provides the entertainment on Saturday nights. Private parties are welcome. there is an area that can be rented out for special occasions. the main bar upstairs is open seven days a week from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. with daily drink specials.

no reservations are needed to escape and "check in" at the newest addition to Kemah’s nightlife. Be sure to welcome the great Kanakas atomic tiki Bar to the SCene! ------------------------------

iLLumiyachty: From Page 39

and when iLLumiYachty dock next at t-Bone tom’s this month, get ready for an unforgettable party that will bring back memories of late ’70s and early ’80s smooth rock past, playing favorites by hall & oates, Steely Dan, Chicago, the Commodores, Lionel Richie, earth, Wind & Fire, the Doobie Brothers, and Christopher Cross (“Sailing,” anyone?), to name a few.

“these are songs people want to hear but forgot they wanted to hear them. it turns into a big party where we’re kind of like the van guard of the smooth, giving out captain’s hats, all kinds of things. there’s definitely a lot of nostalgia and reminiscing going on,” he said. “Little by little, one by one, we’re converting everyone into the secret society of the iLLumiYachty, and we’re here to celebrate that!”

------------------------------

George Strait: From Page 38

“We went from playing that club to things like the crab festival in Bolivar, and crawfish festivals, and it just kept growing. We do a lot in houston because the band is based out of there, but we’ve now been all over— from Reno and Las Vegas, nevada, to California, Canada, and mexico. We figured texas would keep us busy enough, and it does, but there’s just such a demand because george is the legend that he is,” he said, recalling the most recent show in upstate new York as a marker of just that.

“that show was crazy! By the end of it, security was having to make the crowds back up and get us out of there! But i suppose the good thing about being the tribute is that you’re famous for about an hour and a half, and then shortly after you’re normal again,” he laughed. the pandemonium at this and other shows is undoubtedly due to how seriously Spence and the band take their homage to Strait.

“For a really great tribute show, you need really great music played really well, a little bit of magic, and the acting has to be on point – if one of those things is missing, all you have is just a good cover band. We strive for the ‘wow’ factor, something so close to the real thing that you do just say, ‘Wow!’” he said. “and if you’re going to do a george Strait tribute in texas, you better do it right! We focus a lot on his ’80s and early ’90s music. We pride ourselves in being extremely accurate in the look, sound, and mannerisms from his shows. at the end of the day, it is theater, but it’s theater you can bring to a dancehall, or a corporate function. it’s a one act play of live music,” he said. and the tribute to george Strait has grown so much, that the past three years they have even taken their show on the road to mexico!

So what can audiences who haven’t experienced an iLLumiYachty show expect?

“For the past three years, we have taken a big trip out of mexico. this year it’ll be in early november, for as many people who want to go to Cancun. it’s five days of country music, and will include a toby Keith tribute and much more,” Spence said, adding that those interested can private message the tribute to george Strait page on Facebook to be added to the mexico group for more information.

get ready to set sail and reminisce with iLLumiYachty when they come ashore at t-Bone tom’s in Kemah on June 28 for a smooth rockin’ Yacht Rock Party beginning at 7 p.m.

“We played Jackie’s Brickhouse in march, and it was a great turnout. texas is always a fun gig, and the houston audiences are always the most into it; they come right up to the stage and enjoy all their favorite george songs!” he said. “We really feed off of the audience a lot, so if the crowd is that into it, we really rise to the occasion, and it makes it that much more fun and special,” he said. the tribute to george

“Come and expect the sonic equivalent of chicken and dumplings. it’s like constant hugs in the form of songs. Songs that you’ve forgotten you wanted to hear. it sounds cliché, but it’s true. People are going to remember things about their childhood, about growing up, that they maybe haven’t thought of in a long time,” Yachtin said.

this month, however, the tribute to george Strait will be right here in Kemah, texas!

Strait will swing through Kemah at Jackie’s Brickhouse on Saturday, June 29 at 9 p.m. Prepare for the magic that this tribute creates in honor of the King of Country. ------------------------------

Wake Zone: From Page 38

“We started as a group about two years ago. Some of us go to church together or work together, and we just started jamming together. everyone has been playing music forever—our drummer Kirk has been doing this for years, all over texas. the music is part of who we are – and now we are getting to put music out there that is fun, and across all ages,” said lead singer Jenni hess. the current lineup of Wake zone includes hess on vocals; Chris hess (lead guitar); Chris Kidwell (guitar); Chris easley (bass); Kirk Swann (drums); and george Swann (sax, keys, percussion). Following their debut at outriggers in march of last year, the area-based Wake zone has since been making waves throughout the Clear Lake area. “We bounce around all in this area, it’s really all the places we as a group like to go as well, like the Cock-eyed Seagull and, of course, Railean’s. We love going to see Kelly [Railean] and Kenny [Bradshaw] and everyone over there and have a good time with it. it’s a great group of people. Kelly is fantastic. the people down there are just a lot of fun, and we love the vibes there,” she said.

“We don’t look at gigs as just shows. We see it as, ‘Yes! We get to go play tonight!’” Jenni said. Wake zone covers many decades and genres of fun music, something that each member brings to the table in some way.

“it’s really a tribute to our favorite music. We appreciate all kinds of music and come from eclectic backgrounds and like to change it up. We make sure to honor what they came up with, but put our own twist on it,” Jenni said. “We are known for the song ‘Run Like the Wind,’ for example, which is a crowd favorite because of the unexpected heavy metal influence where the guys start jamming together. i always say i ‘have to let the boys off their leash,’ where they just rock out and give it everything they got. it’s a blast!” she said. “expect to be completely caught off guard from start to finish. We’re like a jukebox in your favorite bar, and could be playing anything from Freddie King to the go-go’s, then some John Cougar mellencamp. Come out to have a good time, a nice drink, and enjoy this beautiful coastal area!” Wake zone returns to make waves at Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar on Saturday, June 8 from 6 to 9 p.m., with more events for both the band and live music throughout the month—so grab yourself a cool summer drink in the waterfront community of sunny San Leon and enjoy the party.

Wood & Wind  @ T-bone Tom’s

PATiO SeASON - is arguably our area’s best time of the year and on a Wednesday in may, it was to t-Bone tom’s i went to catch a set of Wood ’n Wind on the Landshark stage, perhaps out of habit from the time, i started working the SCene beat and covered the popular Kemah Jam, perhaps because i needed to see how the area was faring with the 146 construction project underway. Bobbie Revak was her usual self, wowing new fans, making them realize they actually like live music. Steve Revak was his usual self testing out a new taylor – great people, always good to see them! on the way in, i noticed that traffic into the Kemah Lighthouse District was surprisingly manageable now that driving lanes are in place and the signal light timing reckoned. once safely inside the confines of the Lighthouse District, chaos seems to disappear and you find yourself in a serene setting enjoying the galveston Bay breezes, good food, mindy’s fabulously trained crew, and great live music. i won’t vouch each and every trip into the Lighthouse District will be this peaceful, but if you’re a local, willing to wait until after work rush hour, and capable of driving Friendly the texas way, i say give it a whirl. Your guests will think your genius and wished they lived with you. iT’S A WRAP - Live music was simply smashing with lots of outdoor party action around the SCene. Summer is here, we will be shifting gears, and will be looking forward to catching up with you out there, which reminds me: Please do me a favor and keep Pee Wee Bowen in your thoughts as he deals with some heavy duty medical matters. We look forward to his speedy recovery and a good-as-new Pee Wee. all the Best!

LOOSE NOTES: Continued from Page 34 Metal en español - Deadlines were pressing, and i got the chance to catch up with Sister mary tarantula (Carlos [guitar], e [drums], gibb [vocals], Dave [Bass]) at Scout Bar. according to the band, “Sister mary tarantula started as a jam band, realized it was working, and we became a band! twenty years later, and several member changes, the same core idea remains. give the people a solid hard rock, metal show with a touch of humor. We were products of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s and our music reflects those.”

Sister mary Tarantula @ Scout Bar

i figured catching Smt’s debut performance at Scout Bar was the haul of the month and was ready after the show, to head home and start working this month’s article. Fortunately, the band talked me into staying for the rest of the show, and said i’d have fun. no kidding, were they right! the genre was called hard Rock / metal en español — something i’ve never heard before and the headSanta Oscuridad @ Scout Bar liner was a band called Santa oscuridad (Juan Ramirez [voz], Larry Barragán [guitarras], Rudy Rocha [guitarras], Ray Soliz [bajo], Jaime Recio [tambores]). it’s a unique sound that i would like to hear again before attempting to describe. For now, powerful, majestic, fun, and big come to mind – almost like a hunger show, almost like a metalachi show. Sound meister Reuben Foster was operating the new midas 32 sound board and Stage Lighting by alex Slay was camera friendly “perfect”. and with that good people, we are officially into summer! - Continued on Page 32 Knockturnal madness  @ Scout Bar

NO ReFuND BAND - i recall when Ricky Jackson landed in the area, playing at and soon taking over the open mic action at Katie’s. he went quickly to work out on the live music SCene, and assembled an award-winning Blues/Soul/Funk/R&B group, the no Refund Band. along with Jackson (lead guitar/lead vocal) included Rik Robertson (bass), anthony terry (reeds), Jim Brady (brass/percussion/vocal), and Brannon mcLeod (drums) — Plus they all can solo and sing. Bob emmons described them well, as a “rock trio with top shelf horn and sax.”.Spot on, Bob!

No Refund Band @ Katie’s Bar

this houston band has become a tight act that pulls in an audience with a musical flare with what i would all “a splash of jazz,” onto their originals, and their cover interpretations, creating a sound that is uniquely their own — an achievement by any measure. on stage, you can see each of them keen on putting on a good show yet having a good time. not sure if the words grace and poise fits Rock/Blues but that’s the way the show seemed to me.

NeW BAND ON THe BeAT - i *finally* was able to connect the dots and see a Shotgun Road show at Jackie’s Brickhouse. this Cypress, texas, based band plays “the best hits from yesterday past and today, including original numbers.” Shotgun Road consists of former members of some of houston's biggest bands including Stacey Steele (lead vocals, guitars), Kent newman (lead guitar, vocals), Bubba Scherer (bass guitar, vocals) and gene Luna (drums). their circuit includes the greater houston metroplex and surrounding areas. What struck my curiosity is how the drummer for Diamond Jack happens to be the frontman for Shotgun Road, guitar strumming singer, Stacey Steele. i’m hard pressed to think of drummers who also strum guitar and sing lead vocals - Don henley comes to mind. the place? Jackie’s Brickhouse, of course. the crowd? Fun loving good time, of course. the music? Favorable tilt toward Rocking honky tonk. my research? these guys are well booked the entire year. my recommendation? Jackie’s and Shotgun Road: Party Ready! - Continued on Page 33

OLeANDeRS 2019 - Year in and year out, attendees at the Clear Lake School of Rock @ 15th Annual Oleanders Party oleanders gets treated to musically magical moments when everything is “right.” this was the case several times at this year’s 15th annual oleanders Party. national storm front action held off, and the show was a “go” at the music mecca where everything grows. the full yard of friends and live music lovers were well treated this year with a musical line up that included the Clear Lake School of Rock, Fuzzy Side up, and andy and the Dreamsicles. at first, the idea of seeing a School of Rock show at the oleanders would seem dubious, but in the bigger picture, it made wonderful sense providing a chance for the young musicians to perform for a new kind of audience and a chance for many to see the new guard coming. What i enjoy seeing with these young people is not just their talent and poise, but how effortlessly they go through the lineup changes, playing on various instruments and grooving interchangeably with others and with ease. Fuzzy Side up (FSu) was a returning show appearing at the 2017 oleanders. FSu is one super strong band, with James Brown (lead vocals), Reb Burall (keyboard/vocals, BC anagnostis (bass/vocals), Jim Brady (drums) and greg Varhaug (lead guitar & vocals). not only do they deliver an amazing mix of R&B, rock, soul and pop music, Brown has an ability of singing at “You” with equally compelling support from the boys to get you moving. Catch a FSu show yourself and see!

this year, life’s situations found the need for andy and the Dreamsicles to call up a couple fill ins and man, was the call answered! the departure of one of the original Dreamsicles, Bill Samson, on lead vocals opened a spot for miltonio DeCoronado who has proven to be a natural fit with a strong bright gusto. Forrest Barber filled in this year on lead guitar and brought a bright punch to the lineup, a large Fender Deluxe Reverb, bypassing the mixer board and pumping out delightfully energizing licks throughout the afternoon. additional horn players in the lineup gave provided added depth to the music which too was crazy good to hear — all a reminder that little tweaks that can make a big difference — in music (and life)!

noticing Saturday traffic on i-45 was at a standstill, i opted instead to pull into Floyd’s for their annual parking lot party. this year, huge canopies were set up to guarantee a good event regardless of the weather which was thoughtful, but fortunately not needed on this clear cool Saturday afternoon.

funksion @ floyd’s Parking Lot Party

on the stage was Clear Lake’s powerhouse band, Funksion. What i believe listeners like about Funksion is how band leader Fred Linton has not only assembled a powerful nine-piece group of extremely talented musicians (each with more than 20 years of musical experience), but also has them on a strict lineup of “technically challenging, big sound fun stuff “ which only few bands can even attempt. Funksion does so with such confidence and conviction, that the experience is a joy to listen and party to. on this day, mary Watson rejoined the lineup alongside with michael Laurent and Frankie Stevenson — a powerline vocal trio, creating a musical bliss. Family, Funksion and Floyd’s.

OMG, CABO - We reOmG @ Cabo ported recently the new palapa at Cabo Clear Lake and knew a return visit was in order. Just so happened, omg, a north houston Baker Street circuit band was on the stage and my buddy, Jason Padilla was filling in on the kit. Jason is one of those fun musicians like Ronnie Wood: always on the music SCene and always having fun. more people need to enjoy life like Jason. also sitting in with the band was Denise Vargo on vocals joining original omg members Joey t (lead guitar) and Juan C (bass). i like this band. they’re a hard driving ’80s cover band that goes through their setlist nonstop and if there’s a break, fills the span conversing with the audience. “the band’s arsenal of songs ranges from rock, top 40, pop, R&B, hip-hop, dance, country, Latino, and even long lost favorites you haven't heard in years.” these folks have a good stage presence with the sound nice and big while the volume was perfectly dialed. For awhile, i thought i was at Sherlock’s. Summer is here, keep Cabo on your list of stops for live music!

THe CiTY OF NASSAu BAY - Pulled off a doozie with their naSSau BaY StReet eatz PaRtY in the revitalized office district. While personally, i lean toward preservations of the older building and their unique character, the nassau Bay remake is crisp and should easily carry the area for at least another 50 years. this community is not one i associate strongly with live music entertainment, yet for this festival, organizers pulled out the stops bringing in Bama Breeze Sounds and the mambo Jazz Kings. Bama Breeze Sounds plays

across the greater houston metroplex and has appeared on the SCene at Scotty’s Pub, t-Bone tom’s, Jackie’s Brickhouse and Kemah Boardwalk. the band, Chris holmes (vocal and guitar), zach Duncan (steel pan), Charlie Carlisle (drums), and george thomas (bass), has just released their first single "all Life Long" which was recorded and produced at Lucky Run Studios, houston, texas. this band has a way of turning any song into a beach song, be it Paul Simon or the Police. Jackie’s Brickhouse by Evening! George Strait Tribute returns this month By Sarah Piña

Country star are two words that barely begin to define the legend known as george Strait. With 62 no. 1 hits alone, saying that he is a tough act to follow is an understatement. Still, the love for Strait from texas and across the world was undeniable enough that, in a music industry filled with tribute acts, one for the King of Country was inevitable.

“the real george had been in semi-retirement at the time that this idea was conceived by the manager of [award-winning texas band] Southern County Line,” said Derek Spence, who takes on the role of george Strait for the tribute along with the band. “i have been playing over 25 years, and grew up like many did with his music, so this was something that was really exciting for me,” he said.

What began at a club in Cypress a few years ago has turned into the premier george Strait tribute which now plays texas and beyond.

iLLumiyachty docks at T-Bone Tom’s: June 28 By Sarah Piña

the musical genre termed “yacht rock” has seemingly grown in popularity over the past few years, further revived and growing arguably because of Weezer’s recent success with their rendition of toto’s 1982 hit “africa,” bringing yacht rock to the forefront, embraced now by a whole new generation.

Blaggards

Friday, June 21 T-BONE TOM’S

a love for all things of this genre has inspired something more, however. enter iLLumiYachty, a houston-area premier tribute to those smooth rock tunes that were an essential part of the soundtrack of the late ’70s and early-to-mid ’80s.

“it’s that music that is always there in the background wherever you go in elevators, doctors’ offices—you can’t escape them. You can hear the songs from our set from everywhere,” said front man Jonny Yachtin. “once you really hear it, even some of the Daft Punk and Jamiroquai tracks you hear are definitely in the yacht rock vein. People like this more than they think the like it,” he said.

Jordan Matthew Young

two years ago, Yachtin answered an ad that was in search of a lead vocalist for their yacht rock vision precisely because of his love for the music as well, and thus formed the secret smooth rock society now known as iLLumiYachty, who now frequently play in the Clear Lake, Kemah, and galveston areas. the current lineup now includes Yachtin and misty Sea on vocals, Skipper Stone (drums), Capt. mike (guitar, vocals), K-Smooth (bass), Burnie Brightwork (keyboards), and Kenny Kissinger (percussion, keys, guitar, vocals).

Saturday, June 22 KATIE’S BAY

“Boz Scaggs’ ‘Lowdown’ is the reason i’m in this band. all of us have been in other bands [such as DuBtex, Japanic, todville, Kaos, and Kathy Dare & the Bad Luck Charms], but none of had much experience with yacht rock, actually. i think the guys like it because it’s a challenge. all of these bands that we’re covering were virtuosos, so they really are a challenge. Within this genre that is being called yacht rock, we’re having to play everything from southern rock to jazz, and get to do all kinds of things. there’s really more than one style within the genre,’ he said.

Powerman 5000

Saturday, June 29 SCOUT BAR

the various influences of the members inevitably create their own twist on the yacht rock classics as well.

“Some of like more george Benson, and then some are more metal-influenced like our guitarist who is a big metal head, and that comes through on our takes of the songs,” he said. “there’s room for a lot of different flavors. i’m an old hip-hop head, and i love the idea of mashups. So even though we might be playing Captain and tenille, we might take that in a really different direction. We’re like the punks on the yacht, the ones that get kicked off,” he laughed.

ThE GREAT KANAKAS ATOmiC TiKi BAR

New Tiki Bar in Kemah Offers Polynesian Oasis By Shawn Domingues

Located just a stone’s throw from the Kemah Boardwalk, the great Kanakas atomic tiki Bar (601 5th Street) is Kemah’s newest hot spot. With tiki totems flanking the entrance, it is apparent even before you walk through the doors that the great Kanakas is the epitome of a tiki bar. upstairs, the tiki-themed décor and laid-back vibe help create iNSiDeR TiP: get there before sunset, order the specialty an oasis of sorts where drink Pongo Pongo tongo tongo (island speak for strawguests are immersed in berry lemony goodness) grab a seat outside and enjoy the the Polynesian culture. breathtaking view as you watch the sun go down. With palm trees in the corner, surfboard-shaped tables, bamboo walls and a palapa (thatched hut) over the bar inside adding to the island feel, guests can kick back with an umbrella-laden fruity concoction and relax when they need to get away from it all but don’t have the time or resources to actually visit hawaii.

Specialty drinks like the Wrong Way John e’s Bombastic Punch (coconut rum, fruit juices and a 151 kick) and the Lost Lagoon (their version of a liquid marijuana) are served in a tiki totem glass with, of course, a colorful umbrella. Specialty shots, such as the naked mermaid and the Capri Sun are served in mini tiki totem shot glasses, and they proudly serve galveston island Brewery’s tiki Wheat on tap (they even installed their own tiki totem beer pull for the tap). there’s a surfboard on the ceiling and an alien riding a pink flamingo in the corner, but the description for their ocean Water specialty shot, “if you like it dirty, we can make it a galveston Bay,” offers the biggest clue that owners John and Suzanne Williams are fun-loving people who don’t take themselves too seriously. With a dream of one day opening a tiki bar, John and Suzanne came up with the name when Suzanne discovered the word “kanakas” means “average Joe” in hawaiian. the name personifies their salt-of-the-earth outlook on life and their vision to have a place where everyone feels welcome.
