EVEN IT UP: Bringing ‘HEART’ to JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE July 13! By sarah Piña
“Barracuda,” “magic man,” “Crazy on you,” – just merely hearing the titles of these songs brings about the sultry, velvety, powerhouse vocals and melodies that became the soundtracks of many lives, from the late ’70s to present day from the enigmatic band known as heart fronted by sisters ann and Nancy Wilson. and now the Clear lake area will have the chance to relive the memories brought to audiences for decades now!
Chris Hardy & Matt Cash Every Sunday (Downstairs)
Kristy Johnson, a Dallas native with a classically-trained music background, performed and continues to perform in bands and projects in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, including as lead vocalist for an area cover band. however, four years ago, this has shifted with the formation of even it up – the ultimate heart tribute, not to be missed at Jackie’s Brickhouse this month! “music has been a huge part of my family since way back, and i did go to school on a vocal scholarship, singing arias and opera. But it was around 12 or 13 that i got ahold of heart’s music, and it just never let go,” said Kristy Johnson, the “ann Wilson” of the group. “i will always have that certain appreciation for classical music and opera, but rock ‘n’ roll just grabbed my soul, there’s no other way to say it. those things do help me sing stuff like heart, though, which we all know is spectacular and in a class by itself,” she said.
fait was only recently, however, that a heart tribute formed, with Johnson spending several years also with a cover band called Burning Sky.
“the majority of us had been playing in Burning Sky for the last several years,” she said, referring to the current even it up lineup of Johnson on vocals as ann, with Casey Nicole bringing the vocals as Nancy Wilson, and guitar; Phil Scholling (lead guitar); husband glenn Johnson (guitar, keyboards, vocals); Brian Fulenwider (bass); and Pat Calabrese (drums). “When tributes started getting popular, we really sort of fought it tooth and nail, but venues were leaning more toward tribute bands and not just cover bands. and we always had a great reaction to our heart songs—but ultimately, it was like heart was really the way to go, we just had to find our Nancy. and that’s a unicorn right there. i was immersed in the music scene here [in Dallas], but i knew of no one who could truly play, and sing, and harmonize. the harmonizing is when that magic happens, when you get both voices to blend beautifully,” she said.
Johnson then decided to look to a website that connected musicians with specific talents, where she found her “Nancy:” guitarist and vocalist Casey Nicole. “after connecting, she came over one day, and it just worked. She is just so good and so talented. it isn’t easy to find someone who can just pick up and do “these Dreams” just like Nancy did. So after that meeting, even it up was born. this was october of 2015,” she said. having a complete band wasn’t enough, however, for the type of tribute the band envisioned.
“We are so passionate about the music that we didn’t want to half-ass it and just dabble in it. you need the look, the costumes, everything. if we can make someone feel like they stepped back in time, delivering it the way they delivered it, then that is what we want. however, we are still us at the same time, meaning we emphasize being engaging, having that eye contact, going into the crowds, and really pulling them into the show,” Johnson said. - Continued on Page 29

THE BAND HENNESSY:
94.5 THE BUZZ’S NEXT BIG THING! By sarah Piña
What started with a fateful meeting in 2014 between two musical souls resulted in voices that first married in song, and then later in real life.
Flaw
ashley hennessy first traces her eventual meeting with heather hennessy from a musical she sang in, where the original drummer — Chris Piper, of what would later be coined the Band hennessy — was in attendance. Piper took note, as his band needed a replacement female vocalist at the time, and contacted her shortly after.
Sunday, July 21 SCOUT BAR
“he called me up after that performance and let me know that leah [manlove] was having a newborn. She couldn’t do the bar scene or be exposed to the smoke or be in that atmosphere, and was no longer able to fill that position. So they needed a female vocalist that could join their band called Rocket Bayou, which was all cover music. So that’s when i got with them. But our original stuff took place really when this one came along,” ashley said, motioning to her now-wife heather.

Fate would soon have the two meet after heather performed in several area bands herself over the years.
“i did musicals all through high school in la Porte. i always loved and wanted to do my own music. i had my own band called Victims of Virgo. But we were young, and it was hard to get musicians to commit at that age. one night, though, i was in a karaoke bar, and someone noticed me and asked me if i had ever sung with a band. i ended up singing with several bands after that, and the last band i was in was called Pirate Radio,” heather said, noting that she had met many talented and notable musicians in the area during this time, including future band drummer giovanni Capelo — and of course, ashley.
“ashley was another singer i kept hearing about. i said, well who the hell is this girl people are talking about? i need to meet her. We ran into each other; she liked how i sang, and i was impressed with her too. So we sang together one time, and everyone went crazy. they said, you are really good separately but really good together,” she said.

2/5ths on the Galactic Coast Power Hour radio show
Loose Notes
greetings good people! hope everybody is having an enjoyable summer this year and a had restful independence Day holiday. We’re blessed to live in this country and hope you feel the same way, too. last month, we searched for places on the SCeNe with cool aC with great live music and scored both nicely. Judging by the crowds out and about, so did many of you. Nice job! let’s run down some of what all went down:
by Andy Eng
2/5ths - hey folks, if you’re into what’s “really” happening and seeking access to some keen insight out and about on the SCeNe, do yourself a favor and tune into the galactic Coast Power hour. you can find the connection info in the SCeNe magazine and on Facebook. in June, i had the good fortune to have a free evening and dropped in to see this show happen. holy Cow!!! it was easily the best hour i’ve ever spent in quite some while with talk that was crisp, keenly insightful and all in a one-hour format. the show starts off with the table stocked with copious quantities of beer stacked high

and deep of wide variety from craft beers locally available, and gets better from there. even the off-script essays were ad-lib keen, nailing the points you have even thought of i’ve never heard so many dots getting connected so well. musical guests this evening included the members of 2/5ths, mighty mike taylor along with Brad Johnson, of hobson’s Choice fame. - Continued on Page 36

NeW BANd ON The BeAT - For me, which would Wake Zone @ Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar be Wake zone, a band featured in the June issue of the SCeNe and who has been playing in our area for the past year. how in the world have i managed to miss this group for so long?!?! this band is loaded with “great musicians who love playing great music! So watchable. So much fun!” - “they don’t know how good they are!” i honestly lost count of all the songs they played that i’ve not heard in decades — songs from the Clash, gerry Rafferty, men at Work. Perhaps the only number missing was the hit from QuarterFlash, and i’ll bet they do Pretenders, too. everybody in the room loved them. my vocal coach was impressed with the show noting that lead singer, Jenni hess carries at least a four octave range which was sung with authority. along with Jenni, the band includes Chris hess (lead guitar), Chris Kidwell (guitar), Chris easley (bass), Kirsk Swann (drums), and george Swan (sax, keys & percussion). this band is festival ready. the Railean Distillery earned high marks on my annual search for the coolest air conditioning happening. every time we go there, the routine goes like this: Catch up with old friends, meet new friends, enjoy refreshing cocktails made from spirits distilled on location and enjoy some great live music. on this visit, i enjoyed (and highly recommended) their texas Peach and Reef Juice. made of real fruit juices, the Railean Distillery drinks are arguably actually good for your health. Cheers to your health and cheers to new friends!
3X3 - is not quite how the animals came to Noah’s ark but in June, we caught an exceptional trio of professional musicians, Big Jordan applebe on a 12-string with Richard Rose on fiddle joined by Starr Jernigan. this may have been a one-off performance but one i’d sure like to see again with two powerful voices with three inventive musicians performing convincing and compelling interpretations of classic ‘60s covers appropriate for these days we live in. Studio
Big Jordan Applebe, Richard Rose & Starr Jernigan @ Noah’s Ark ready i say with a texas size gusto! the three flowed together well, passing lead breaks amongst them striking my attention and judging by the applause in the perch at Noah’s, they struck many others’ muse. if ever you catch any of these three while out and about, take my suggestion to hang out awhile. your soul will thank you. also, in case you haven’t heard, Noah’s has been the place for live music on Sunday afternoons with a good stream of young talent. if warm summer breezes and a vast waterfront view is - Continued on Page 35 what you seek, then Noah’s ark is your place.

zappa would’ve liked these two.the pair have been collaborating as an acoustic duet freeing attention to explore the world through lyrics into a style uniquely their own: Catchy and witty, waiting to be discovered. after you hear them, you’re likely to say, “What did they just say?!?!?!?” if these were the ‘60s, i’m sure they would’ve been signed by a major label by now with there vinyl records everywhere. either that or on the underground Fm radio circuit. OVeR The TOP this month, i got to join up with a packed house at Katie’s and hear for the first time, the Keeshea Pratt Band, 1st place in the band division of the 34th annual international Blues (Challenge (iBC) held in memphis, tN. Based out of houston, this band plays a busy nationwide schedule and keeps things pretty much at Sambucas when in houston. Since Bacliff isn’t in houston, we were so very fortunate that Bob and Katie emmons were able to bring such a world-class band to the area. What a treat for local music lovers! handling the bar was the ever-able team of Brandi and Desiree making sure everybody was well served.
The Keeshea Pratt Band @ Katie’s Bar
according to Keeshea’s people, “the houston based, international award winning Keeshea Pratt Band possesses the skill and artistry reminiscent of Blues and old school motown a rarity among bands of any genre today. the 9-piece musical collective, lends its energy and passion to traditional blues, contemporary blues and offers a preview of the future of blues. the musical artistry and dexterity of the Keeshea Pratt Band allows it to journey, unapologetically, across the genres of classical, jazz, Southern rock, soul, gospen, country and back again. Keeshea Pratt is the siren featured on the microphone with soaring, soulful, mississippi-inspired vocals. She is supported by a talented and diverse group of singers and musicians representing 5 states (texas, California, louisiana, arkansas, mississippi) and Japan. the fourpiece horn section produces thrilling, chorded, in-sync rhythms that rival those of big bands. the make up of this phenomenal band is Shawn allen (music Director/Bass/Vocals), eugene Botts (B2/Piano), Brian Sowell (lead guitar/Vocals), Dan Carpenter (Saxophone), Juames Williams iii (trumpet), misaki Nishidate (trumpet), Brent Nabrs (Bari Sax) and andy acuna (Drums).” this was one top-notch entertaining evening. i especially enjoyed how Keeshea captured the audience, commanding us to have fun, which we did. Remember, Katie’s on any night, where you and your friends can catch a great music show and where there’s never a cover charge.

AVANT GARde - last month, i went into flashback mode Obsolete August with missing the old Sherlock’s that was once a magnet site for fun Erik Garza @ Cabo and local live music on the SCeNe. Fortunately, a lot of that action migrated down to the water to Cabo where in June, i got to enjoy a set from obsolete august. Kevin holmes was sporting a new Fender acoustasonic with its new sounds while Danny lopez held the groove on hand percussion. high energy was the order of the evening with erik garza and his patented set of titanium vocal chops joined the lineup along with several songs with lori mcCall — it was like a homecoming. over the decades, obsolete august continues to keep busy playing over 200 shows a year. this is a band i like listening to when seeking what’s new in the music world as they “will try anything just to prove they can do it” and while doing so, “adds new influences every week. everything from elvis and the Beatles to margo and the Nuclear So N So’s”. Want to catch what’s new? Check out obsolete august, they’ll be giving it a whirl...

Kelly McGuire Band @ T-bone Tom’s
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 34
2018 TROP ROCK VeNue OF The YeAR - Which would be right here at t-Bone tom’s with Kelly mcguire on the landshark Stage. Pass the word please: Navigating the 146 construction is manageable now that the lane barriers are well marked with reflectors. Just remember to time your arrival to avoid the Boardwalk dinner traffic, to drive friendly (the texas way) and to make t-Bone tom’s one of your destination spots. once off the maddening roads, you’ll be able to decompress on the patio, enjoy a cool beverage, partake of good food and best of all, enjoy some great live music.
We got off track with mcguire’s busy schedule when a vessel mishap snarled past Red Fish island raft up concerts and made up for that in June. earlier afternoon weather was thunderstorm steamy. once the showers fell and the cool front pushed through, we enjoyed a splendid evening as the music went magical. mcguire’s band was in solid refreshing trop rock form and then some. there was fun interaction with the audience all night long. Readers know how fond i am of dual leads, mcguire paired up with Ken Reynolds on guitar was sensational this evening introducing (to my ears) a beach music number deeply infused with a mediterreanean feel — as if they were a duet of matadors with a smooth effortless exactness in full control of the power they were working with. i found this number brilliantly refreshing and convinced it needs to be recorded live for inclusion on mcguire’s upcoming CD. Kelly truly lives a mantra and perspective that many of us should consider. Catch a Kelly mcguire show while he’s in town, find your mantra and live it, too. COOLesT AC OF The suMMeR - tis that time of the year and in June, mentions go to the Railean Distillery, Scout Bar, and Jackie’s Brickhouse. While all felt cool, Jackie’s Brickhouse also looked cool. i failed to take a picture of it, so you’ll have to stop in yourself to check it out, which is what i did in June, catching Side Project X (SPX), a hard rocking local garage cover band that plays around the houston/galveston area. this band includes eric (guitar), mike (guitar/ vocals), Corbin (bass/vocals), Jimmy (drums/vocals). over the years, i’ve made considerable mention of my fondness for duelling guitars in a band. mention goes to this group on how well they pulled off the show with guitar/vocalist, mike, unable to join the band for the evening. the remaining threesome adjusted and the absence was not noticeable. a well-done sign of a tight band. i’ll be looking forward to catching the entire band again down the road. if you’re into “cool” and live music, check out Jackie’s Brickhouse!

Russ Driver Band @ Scout Bar
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 33
COLORed RiBBONs - Whenever i catch a musical performer donating time and talents at fundraiser benefit events, i’ll make note and try my best with a follow up to catch their show. this was the case with Russ Driver. Russ appeared on my radar at Joe Palermo’s fight against cancer circle and again at Slm/Scout Bar’s tune out Cancer show earlier this year. a follow up was in order, and we were able to do just that as the Russ Driver Band appeared at Scout Bar along with the Steve Satchel Band (another talented houston band) as local opening acts for tony macalpine on his 2019 electric illusion tour.
it was a rainy Wednesday, yet the weather didn’t matter with a good turnout of musicians in the Scout Bar house. musicians who came from all across the greater houston metroplex for the show, some even as far as Conroe.
the genre for the evening was instrumental Rock and not a word was sung the entire evening - Just a lot of incredible shredding and note playing. the Steve Satchel Band reminded me plenty of ted Nugent’s, hibernation (tooth, Fang & Claw) which was perhaps my introduction into instrumental rock. headliner, macalpine, an international touring legend who began playing classical piano and violin at the age of 5, displayed his virtuoso skills centered around hard Steve rock/metal with influences of classical, jazz and Satchel fusion. the number of great musicians macalpine has played with is boggling and a Band @ testament to his skills and respect. Scout Bar the Russ Driver show was an extraordinary display of talent i honestly had no idea existed, with sustained runs at a solid 600 bpm, hitting every note on the fretboard. there is an intensity to Driver’s music that is truly his. this guy should be on a nationwide tour. Folks, we’ve really got a great thing happening in our area with Scout Bar when they bring in the national and international acts with our local band getting to share the stage. oh, did i start this with “colored ribbon?” macalpine wears blue and Driver, green; and both demonstrating, as with all survivors, to keep on living...
iT’s A WRAP - the only dark mark on the month was the loss of the Celtic tiger (Kemah Police Chief Chris Reed) who ironically left huge wakes of goodwill wherever he went, only to be taken down by a greater wake.
our loss, so if we can, let’s keep his fire burning. on the good news front, the live music SCeNe has been exquisitely good and the summer cocktails refreshTony MacAlpine ing! i’ve enjoyed @ Scout Bar catching up with many of you out there, and hearing your stories. let’s have a great rest of summer We’ll see you out on the SCeNe.

Budweiser Discovery Reserve: From Page 41
the design of Budweiser Discovery Reserve is inspired by the past while recognizing the future; the 11 stars represent the apollo 11 mission and the alternating bottle caps represent both our footsteps on the moon and our next frontier, mars. the historic anheuser-Busch a & eagle has also been updated to reflect the red planet with the earth in the background. Finally, each bottle features wings and stars inspired by the original Budweiser cans. Budweiser Discovery Reserve is the newest addition to the popular Reserve Collection, preceded by Budweiser Reserve Copper lager – the most successful Reserve Collection variant to date – Budweiser Freedom Reserve and Budweiser Repeal Reserve. launched in September 2017, Budweiser’s Reserve Collection was first created to develop and debut new recipes and packaging tied to premium and relevant moments in time.
Heart Tribute Band: Continued From Page 44
“We also don’t use tracks, and this is really some of rock ‘n’ roll’s most challenging music. that’s why there aren’t a lot of heart tributes out there. We just try to operate in the same space.”
and this is no easy task either, as many may not realize that heart actually has a career catalog that spans over 40 years.
“Since they have such an extensive catalog, we make sure to include the deep ’70s hits, the crazy ’80s, and some of the zeppelin aspects, because that’s a big part of who they are. We try to cover the entire gamut,” Johnson said. the connections don’t end with only the music, however. Casey Nicole has previously attended Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp, working and playing with Nancy Wilson who served as one of the instructors, and most recently, they spent an evening with michael Fisher, former manager of heart, as well as Roger Fisher, the original lead guitarist. additionally, both Johnson and Nicole will have the opportunity to meet both Nancy and ann Wilson when they tour in Dallas in august— which is to say, with all of these close ties coupled with stellar talent, Clear lake should expect a phenomenal show at Jackie’s Brickhouse this month.
“expect true music. as i mentioned before, we don’t use tracks, or take any shortcuts, like on songs such as ‘Crazy on you,’ for example, which has a complicated, very complex acoustic intro that most bands avoid because of that. We have dedicated ourselves to learning these things, and to carrying off a look that together will hopefully bring back some great memories and make you feel like you stepped back in time,” she said. “i am enormously proud of the people in this band and who they are. We are genuinely friends. they are good human beings and great musicians, and you can’t ask for a better scenario than that. i am so grateful, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the show!”

even it up – the ultimate heart tribute will hit the stage as heart Saturday, July 13 at Jackie’s Brickhouse in Kemah beginning at 9 p.m. So grab your spot early, get ready to dance, but most importantly—get ready for a night full of ‘heart!’
The Band Hennessy Continued From Page 43
“that is what we pride ourselves in. in some bands, you have one strong female vocal, but there’s two of us. our one voice – when we sing together is so much more powerful than individually. the vowel sounds are the same, the vibrato matches, and we stylistically play off of one another. i am not exaggerating when i say this, because harmonies were not natural for me. i always took the lead in my previous bands, but it has made me a better singer to be in this band. We bring the best out of each other. When we sing together, that voice is so different than either of ours individually. it’s like one voice. it’s beautiful, it’s so beautiful,” ashley said. this union eventually created a whole new path personally for both heather and ashley when they married two years ago, as well as for the band professionally from the very beginning.
“We became the Band hennessy in 2014. We decided to take an original direction with our songwriting and making albums, with putting things we needed to say for you to be able to relate to,” ashley said, adding that the creative process has always been a collective one from each member of the band. “the beginning stages of the writing process are a collective effort as far as composition. Christian [Weigand, lead guitarist] has an innate, godgiven talent to hear music like it should be played. he is insanely talented and just we clicked from the get-go. he could take anything i was saying or write down, but he would go and pull from that and his own ex-
periences and voilá!” she said, adding that “there’s also a lot of female empowerment if you notice as well. it’s always about the woman, or could be anyone, though, having the strength at the end of the song.” Collaboratively, heather sees it as a collective experience as well.
“every person in this band has their strengths that we look to. When we are all collectively in the studio, it’s kind of a rough draft concept, then we all put in our thoughts and something is created out of that. We all speak the same language – we don’t even know what we’re telling each other, but we understand each other. our music is about telling a story, our experiences, things we’re feeling or we’ve been through, and then we put them in a song. We want to let people know they are not alone and can get past it. We try to make it relatable and real,” heather added. “it’s important that the lyrics mean something. We are telling a story and want you to believe what we’re saying, because we believe it, too.” that connection has been felt time and again by their fan base which has only continued to skyrocket. individually, both heather and ashley have won Bay area idol, and ashley has also clenched the title of Pride Superstar for houston. “this was the coolest accomplishment for me personally coming from a background where, you know, i was 14 and it wasn’t cool to talking about liking chicks if you were a chick,” she said.
as a band, they have since been nominated for “Best New Band of the year” and “Best Rock Band of the year” by the 94.5 the Buzz texas Buzz awards, and “Best Rock Band of the year” by the imea (international music and entertainment associations) in 2015, opened for national acts such as hinder, ty herndon, hunter Valentine, and more, and released their first album So much For love in 2017, which was coincidentally recorded in up/Down Studios, of which Justin Furstenfeld of Blue october is owner and producer. Why coincidental? as fans know by now, the Band hennessy (dubbed “Southern art Rock” by Furstenfeld himself for
their accents and distinctive rock style) was voted just last month as houston’s “Next Big thing” Contest Winner on 94.5 the Buzz‘s Rod Ryan Show beating out more than 60 area bands by fan vote — and with this honor comes a recording contract with the up/Down Studios Record label, as well as an opening slot for Blue october when they hit the stage at houston’s 1st annual music and arts Fest at White oak music hall on July 27. “music is the universal language, so for us to have that opportunity, especially in such an underrated scene in houston, and to get noticed in such a big pool of talented artists and people is mind blowing,” said ashley. “Justin will be the magic behind the keyboards and producer chair this time. i’m intimated, but at the same time, i’m crazy excited, because if you have ever been in that studio and stepped foot in there it is a different world, and there’s no feeling like it. it’s like Disneyland but for musicians!”
“it’s been a journey. as a band and for us personally. and i think it’s just the timing of all this could not have been more perfect. my dad passed a couple of years ago, and some other things have happened…if this would have happened then, we wouldn’t have been able to take advantage of it. We couldn’t be happier and we appreciate everyone who voted and continued to vote. our fans really hustled! We are blessed to have the people support us that we do, because without them we would be nothing,” said heather.
to catch the Band hennessy at their next big performance with Blue october on July 27 at White oak music hall, get tickets now as it will sell out! as of press time, only general admission and limited parking passes are left. give the Band hennessy a “like” on Facebook and make sure to follow for upcoming performances and details on the new album — after all, you won’t want to miss all the forthcoming news on houston’s NeXt Big thiNg!

the 12th edition of the top performance boating event in texas took place last month and was not only another tremendous success, but raised funds for 10 local charities. organizers would like to thank everyone involved, including the supporting cities of Seabrook, Kemah and Nassau Bay, to marine max for hosting the new “outlaw to the max gala,” and to all the sponsors including Kendra Scott, which was on board at this year’s event with a charity “mystery Pull” that was a grand success. the SCeNe wants to send special acknowledgement to the toC Rescue team and Divers as this year, there was a mishap during the outlaw Shoot-out. luckily the rescue team went into immediate action and rescued a disoriented two-man crew from the water. one of whom was face down at the time he was pulled from the water. Both men were rushed to shore to awaiting ambulances. Fortunately, both participants were released by the hospital in time to receive their Shoot-out class award at the gala Rescue team rushing two boaters to shore the following night. great job to all involved!

PAINTER, POTTER, AND PROFESSOR Featured Artist: JENNIFER HERZBERG
By Kelley dawson Jennifer herzberg didn’t pursue art until her college years; now she teaches art at lee College in Baytown. She told, “i wanted to pursue computer science, but i couldn't make it through calculus and math. i was bartending and waitressing. i thought about hotel management; then not so much.” herzberg tried photography, drawing, and ceramics courses. “i decided art was the thing to do and stuck with it,” she declared. herzberg joked she took the seven-year Bachelor of arts plan.
a highly accomplished potter and professor; herzberg is educated in ceramics through her undergrad and graduate degrees. herzberg earned a broad education in pottery glazes and firing. She said potter instructors taught her both wheel and slab techniques. herzberg prefers forming from slab for her own personal creativity; though she still throws on the wheel. She informed her medium of choice is stoneware clay in white and brown; fired mid to high range. her glazes are usually layered one coat of one color and then another.
“it adds depth and makes it more interesting,” revealed herzberg. She further detailed the process of spraying on a clear coat and following with a matte finish. herzberg admitted, “it's a trick to do it enough to get it right.” She mentioned her pieces tend to be more pottery vessels that aren’t to be used. “they are more like sculptures of a tea pot or platter,” she added.
herzberg finds inspiration from patterns of australian aboriginal paintings, mayan architecture, and exposure to everyday life and nature. “ideas come together. i don't methodically or consciously plan. i take those things that are there and they come out in my work,” she stated.
herzberg enjoys how clay moves and working with it like a pie crust. She described, “i roll out the slab, build, and go with the response of the clay. if it won't roll to make a handle; i scrape it off and do something else or try again. i adapt and change. if something works well, i do it more.”

Featured Culinary Artist:
Manuel Chavez “Junior” skallywag suds N’ Grub
600 6th street, Kemah • 281-538-8877
What’s your Background/experience: i first knew i wanted to cook when i used to watch my grandma in the kitchen. i had to stay home because i had been diagnosed with bone cancer (osteosarcoma). So i was homebound from school and spent most of my time next door at my grandparents’ house. my grandma was the best cook in the world! She sold burritos every Satuday to the whole neighborhood. that was before hurricane ike took everything from us. after ike, i went through some tough times and made some bad decisions. But everything changed in 2012 when my daughter was born. i needed to get a real job — no more street stuff. i first started working in the kitchen at a place in laPorte called mainly Drinks. i was there for roughly two years, but i had to quit because it was too far. then irvin told me that Skallywag Suds N’ grub was looking for a cook, so i went and interviewed. No questions asked about my prosthetic — that was in September 2014, and i’m still here. i love it! i love my boss, the management and co-workers. i get along great with all of them, like family.
What do you love about working at skallywag suds N’ Grub? i get compliments daily from our regulars and, man, does that makes me feel bad-ass (excuse my language). that’s why i do what i do because it makes people happy! Food makes people happy. i love our customers, and they show a lot of love back, which makes it very comfortable work here.
Your specialty or signature dish: i love putting together a good burger! our 1955 Cheeseburger is a simple old-school burger, but my signature is the ketchup smiley face on the top bun. The most rewarding part of your job? most rewarding would be the love and compliments that i receive from our customers and the community. 5 words that describe you: Respectful. thoughtful. hard-worker. Caring. Dad.
Favorite thing about the Bay Area? Favorite thing about the Bay area is Kemah because Kemah is my home!
What do you love about working in a kitchen? i love working in a kitchen, especially here at Skally’s, because i get to be creative every day. Plus, each day is different, every day is a new challenge and every day i learn something new.
Who inspires you? What motivates you? my dad inspires me. he is such a hard worker. he’s almost 60 and ran 2 marathons this past year and still plays soccer. i wish i could be like him. my motivation are my babies Carmen (7) and Bubba (5), aka little junior.
Publisher’s Note: Junior recently broke his prosthetic leg and the cost of a new one is beyond his reach. But Junior’s co-workers have started a goFundme page to raise money for a new prosthetic leg. By giving a little, you will help out a lot! Visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/juniors-new-prosthetic-leg-fund to donate.
“For those who don’t know his story, Junior was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 12 and had to have a total knee and femur replacement at the age of 16. Due to complications from the surgery he lost what most of us take for granted every day. the Van Nes rotation plasty was able to rotate and reattach his foot to his remaining limb for a more functioning “knee” joint, but because of this, finding a prosthetic to fit Junior’s leg is not only difficult but more expensive. everyone who knows Junior, knows that he is a hard worker, a great cook, and an even better father. Without a new leg doing everyday things such as taking care of his kids, or working to make an income, will be almost impossible,” explained Skallywag Suds N’ grub coworker erinn Dehoyos who started the fundraiser.

KEMAH: Your Detour To Fun
Kemah, once a small, sleepy fishing town, has evolved exponentially as an entertainment destination over the past decade and into a thriving city on galveston Bay. most people – especially those from outside of the area – typically associate this city with the massively successful Kemah Boardwalk. and although, yes, the Kemah Boardwalk is one of texas’ top attractions, houston’s top attraction and ground zero for fun along the bay, there is so much more in Kemah that compliments the entertainment experience for visitors and locals alike.
More entertainment, dining, Nightlife, Coastline & shopping per square mile than any place on planet earth
although occupying less than two square miles (1.84) of land and home to less than 2,000 residents, Kemah has more than 35 venues to eat and drink and roughly the same number of retail outlets ranging from boutiques to boat dealers to national ‘big box’ brand stores. Kemah houses the only wooden roller coaster in the houston region and an impressive fleet of pleasure watercraft including many available for public rides and charters ranging from small sailboats and fishing charters to the historic 55-foot schooner Capt Kidd and the gulf Coast’s largest luxury charter yacht, the Boardwalk FantaSea. and after a fun day on the bay,
Kemah offers five hotels and 10 bed & breakfasts ready to provide a good night’s rest.
Challenges brought on by Misconceptions tied to Construction
While tX-Dot has started the much-anticipated highway 146 construction, the perception of its direct impact on traveling into and out of Kemah over the Clear Creek Channel seems to be far greater than the reality. Don’t get us wrong, if an “insider tip” to getting to the Boardwalk or lighthouse District from the Kemah bridge was passing the first left turn at 6th Street and continuing further south before turning left south of the construction, it is definitely now the case since the 6th Street turning lane has been shortened. But based on an unscientific study by SCeNe magazine staffers who travel the Kemah bridge up to 10 times a day, getting into Kemah now actually seems quicker and easier along hwy. 146 during most times of the day than it did previous to the construction. But this is likely because the perception of the construction and “fear of potential delays” are keeping more people away, which unfortunately is having an effect on many Kemah businesses. Remember, small business owners don’t just rely on tourist business, and now more than ever, they need locals to step up and engage.
Themed Fireworks over the Kemah Boardwalk
Friday, July 12 ........Broa dway Music Friday, July als 19 .............. ..Apollo 11 Friday, July 50th 26 .............. ......Rock N Roll
the good news is the pace of the construction, especially the work widening the Kemah bridge, is moving forward at an impressive pace. But more importantly there remains multiple ways to get into Kemah from the west, including via Fm 2094, Fm 518 and highway 96.
What’s New in Kemah?
the construction is not the only new development in Kemah. the City of Kemah recently partnered with Vinyl Draught Radio and launched its own digital radio station named Radio Kemah. available online at www.RadioKemah.com or via the Vinyl Draught Radio mobile app (available for free download at the apple and google app stores, the station plays music to compliment the City’s seaside “baycation” profile with a nice mix of local and national artists along with city news and event information. - Continued on Page 19

APOLLO 11 50th Live: An Out-Of-This-World Celebration! “that's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
on July 20, 1969, over 500 million viewers tuned in and heard these words spoken by astronaut Neil armstrong during what was — and for many still is — the greatest adventure in human history, marking the crowning moment of one of the national goals originally set by President John F. Kennedy in 1962: to get a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
Five decades later, this continues to be a cherished moment in history, and houston as the home of human spaceflight is throwing a befitting celebration in honor of the awe-inducing apollo 11 lunar landing. aptly named apollo 11 50th live, an all-day lunar celebration as well as countdown to armstrong’s first steps on the moon will take place on July 20 at Space Center houston. From key speakers to late-night NaSa tram tours, an outdoor festival to a concert with some of the nation’s biggest acts, this is an event not to be missed!
the outdoor ceremony which opens the festival will begin promptly at 9:15 a.m., with speakers from the apollo era and today marking the beginning of this special occasion, along with the golden Knights (uS army official aerial parachute demonstration team) parachuting in! throughout the day, several special panel presentations featuring a variety of those from apollo-era flight controllers will take place, as well as hands-on activities in science and technology related zones, robotic challenges, and various space-themed learning experiences especially designed for family participation.
But wait, there’s more! Rocket Park activities will include a uS army apache helicopter on display, a uS army exhibit trailer focusing on robotics, and an hour-long Jerry Woodfill Rock and Roll Show during the day. For the evening, celebration guests can enjoy a concert from national (space-themed in some aspect) acts WalK the mooN (who can count “Shut up and Dance” among their major hits) and singersongwriter Phillip Phillips, whose debut album the World from the Side of the moon was released the same year he won the 11th season of the hit show american idol.
One Giant Toast - 7/20 @ 3:17pm
See Pages 40 & 41 to learn about Budweiser Discovery Reserve & One Giant Toast
a countdown will then take place — think New year’s eve in NyC’s times Square – counting down to 9:56 p.m. CSt when Neil armstrong took the first official steps on the moon, an event that will coordinate with the first 15,000 ticket-holding attendees who will have received glowing leD wristbands, synchronized especially for the occasion.
tickets are on sale now, but ViP experiences as of press time are limited! those who wish to attend are encouraged to purchase tickets online aSaP to guarantee their spot! Space Center Houston welcomes visitors to the restored Apollo Mission Control Center
it’s mission accomplished for the restoration of NaSa’s apollo mission Control Center. the nonprofit Space Center houston welcomes people from around the world to experience the historic room that helped land humans on the moon. NaSa and Space Center houston leadership, city of Webster officials and apollo legend and flight director gene Kranz joined a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the official unveiling of the restored apollo mission Control Center.
“thanks to the city of Webster and worldwide support, the treasured landmark is now restored, preserving it for future generations,” said William t. harris, president and Ceo of Space Center houston. “We can gain incredible insight through the accomplishments of the apollo era, and the room will continue to inspire people and innovators to chase their dreams.”
Beginning July 1, Space Center houston guests can see the newly restored room as part of the center’s NaSa tram tours and level 9 ViP tours. the restoration of apollo mission Control is complete just in time for guests to experience the legacy of the apollo era as the world celebrates the 50th anniversary of the apollo 11 lunar landing this month.
Designated a National historic landmark in 1985, the room celebrates human space exploration and inspires people from around the world who visit. Space Center houston, the city of Webster and
NaSa Johnson Space Center worked together over two years to restore the room that fueled the space race and innovation that changed the course of history. the restoration project was for the National historic landmark, the apollo mission Control Center at NaSa Johnson Space Center. the room, used during the gemini, apollo and Shuttle eras, underwent restoration beginning in July 2017.
the scope of the restoration project included the mission operations Control Room (moCR), the Visitor Viewing Room, Simulation Control Room and the Summary Display Projection Room (also called the “bat cave”). guests will now see the restored flight control consoles with buttons illuminated and their screens displaying data used during the apollo 11 mission. the five large screens across the front of the room have been reactivated with projections to recreate the exact images seen during the apollo 11 mission. other details include period-authentic coat racks, chairs and a coffee station. Furnishings on the consoles include flight control manuals, ashtrays, pens, maps, coffee cups and headsets. Space Center houston guests will sit in the original viewing room seats, which have been reinforced and reupholstered. the experience displays an accurate look of the iconic room based on the apollo era.
to support the restoration, the city of Webster gave the lead gift of $3.5 million toward the $5 million fundraising campaign. in July 2017, Space Center houston conducted a Kickstarter campaign where thousands of people from around the world contributed to the center’s fundraising campaign which helped achieve the completion of the restoration.
