Houston rap on the Map in Clear Lake:
By sarah Piña
big Yogi & paul Wall Hit sCOut bAr saturday, October 5
The Houston rap scene has never been one short of acts notorious throughout the nation and internationally – and Scout Bar will set the stage, literally and proverbially, for a landmark show not to be missed when H-Town’s own Big Yogi opens for paul Wall on October 5. The journey for Christopher Tenney, aka Big Yogi, has been steadfast and skyrocketing ever since his career in rap was born not that many years ago.
“I was born in Houston and raised in pasadena. I have some friends who are involved in the music scene, and one night I went out with a friend of mine who wanted me to come out for a show. It just so happened that show was at Scout Bar. A light turned on for me that night, like, ‘You can do this.’ So I just gung-ho went into this,” he said.

Through some networking and his familiarity with the music scene, it wasn’t too long before Yogi got into the studio himself—but it would take more drive than this to be involved at the level of success he is now.
“I was working, making videos, making music, but no one would book me. So I just started asking other people how they got booked, simple as that. I decided I need to call a venue and book my own shows. From that night, it’s been show after show after show,” said Yogi, who in addition to being a father, rapper, and talented tattoo artist also became a promoter, often times for venues such as 18th Street Bar and Grill and BFE. “I’m pretty unique, and I have my own sound; I can say that,” Yogi said of his own rap style. “But I was raised in the ‘80s and ‘90s in Houston, so the Geto Boys, DJ Screw — you know — all the legends influenced me, so I just go with what I feel,” he said.
Like many successful music stories, however, it’s not one that comes overnight and without a lot of hard work and belief in one’s self.
“This is a job. It’s a full-time job, and you have to want it. The more you invest and the more you put yourself out there, the better results you will get. I paint a picture, that’s what I want to do,” he said. “No matter what, don’t give up. people are going to talk down on you, say you can’t do it, say you’re crazy, that you’re wasting your time. You’re going to lose friends, your family is going to turn their back on you— but don’t quit. This is your dream. No one is going to live your life but you. Just don’t listen and do what you do. I’m 41 years old and never rapped in my life, and in four years in, and I’m all over the United States and Europe on the radio. It just goes to show it’s possible,” he emphasized. Indeed, in four short years Yogi has catapulted onto the rap scene like an unsuspecting comet, recording his first full-length Lp in the legendary SugarHill recording Studios and with a new song out with paul Wall as well, who he’ll hit the stage with on October 5 – a first-time appearance for Wall, too.
For other aspiring artists, however, he cannot emphasize enough that this quick rise to the top doesn’t come without blood, sweat, and tears. - Continued on Page 41

sCOut bAr Debuts New patio Lounge & bar
Scout Bar has always had lively spaces inside to enjoy adult beverages and other cocktails while taking in some of the latest musical and other live acts known both nationally as well as globally. The addition of pub Level upstairs added to this in recent years, with a variety of options for food, beverages and even more space for games like pool, lounging in a modern space, and catching the latest sports events. And now—as of August— Scout patrons have another option—a beautiful new outside patio bar! Equipped with two plasma televisions, roomy modern outside furnishings, and stunning aqua tile covered bar, the new patio is just one more reason to come and see a show, visit with friends, and take in a cold beverage all while beating the Houston heat to boot—it is covered, and there are ceiling fans as well!
“The patio is beautiful. Thomas and Aline [Wilson, owners and operators of Scout Bar and pub Level] did a fantastic job. It’s so nice and lounge-y,” said Jessie rychlik, who you can find at the Scout bars now inside and out many nights. “people love the fact they can get drinks outside, that there are TVs as well, and most definitely that they can hang with friends and family,” she said. Also found throughout the area are several tables (equipped with ashtrays!) for those who may be in need of a break outside. So check out the upcoming live show highlights (also featured in this issue!), plan a great night out with friends and family, and visit the shiny new addition to Scout Bar, now a favorite spot at Clear Lake’s premier rock music venue!

“When you know you’re hungry, when you want to eat, you’ll find anyway to feed that. That’s the same way you have to think about life, about this business. Music genuinely saved my life and I can say that,” he said. “I also want to give a special thank you to all of the artists I work with. It is very important to support your local artists. I wouldn’t be here either without that local support.”
prior to the show at Scout Bar, Lonestar Slab and Lone Star riders will also be present for the event, creating a true showcase for the culture and sound that is integral to the Houston rap scene. ALX Industries presents paul Wall with Big Yogi on Saturday, October 5 at Scout Bar. Doors open at 8 p.m.; show begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are limited and the show is sure to sell out. Get your tickets now from the Scout Bar website, or better yet, reserve a VIp table while they’re still available. See you on the Houston rap SCENE!

The variety continues as Mushroomhead brings their metal, theatrics and artsy masks on October 15, while “Californa’s country hip-hop rebels” the Moonshine Bandits with sara Ross and dalton d’Rich help close out the month on the red, White, and Blue Collar tour on October 24. NOvEMbEr
The head banging continues in November with helmet on November 1st, with their innovative brand of alternative metal rock, while none other than Michael Graves— HELMET best known from the Misfits—hits the stage for his American Monster Tour along with Brand of Julez on November 2. SpicLITTLE MISS NASTY ing things up only a few days later, Little Miss Nasty brings rock ‘n’ roll burlesque alive on the Scout stage on November 6, while the ever-popular (hed)p.e will headline on November 29. Don’t miss their opening act, however!—the Blacklist Regulars, with a vocalist from Ireland and a band from Venezuela will pound the stage with their (HED) P.E. modern twist on the hard rock genre, reminiscent of bands like Soundgarden and Stone Temple pilots. All in all, the next few month’s Scout Bar’s scheduled performances are an unparalleled mix of rap, metal, rock, noted national and international acts, and so much more! The Scout Bar website and Facebook page will continuously update fuller lists in the coming months as new acts are announced; however, make sure to take note of your favorite acts using this handy guide of highlights— and when you go, make sure to tell them The SCENE sent you!

Cold Feet & Friends @ seabrook Community Center
Loose Notes
Greetings! We hope you had a great Labor Day Weekend and survived summer well. We enjoyed a great month of live music, refreshing summer beverages and good times tagging up with many of you. In August, we reconnected with local live music from the past as well as partook of very notable new materials to our ears. The music we listened to was sizzling superb. Based on proportional statistics, if we missed the show you were at, chances are good that the shows you caught were just as good. Let’s run down some of what went down:
by Andy Eng
WheN i’M 64 - A popular Beatles song written by a younger paul McCartney ran its course as a lifelong experiment in August Not in Liverpool, England and with a completely different outcome from what McCartney had suggested. In this case, a full house of revelers from the Seabrook and Laporte Scene gathered at the Seabrook Community Center and celebrated Donny McCorquodale’s 65th birthday not by watching him bounce grandchildren 'Vera, Chuck and Dave' on his knee, rather instead calling together the band, Cold Feet & Friends, for a good old fashion summertime party!
There was no B-flat clarinet played this evening, rather loads of good acoustic and electric rock & roll. Joining McCorquodale was local guitar hero David Hargraves, Danny Douglass (Emeritus of the Garage Bands of Texas) on bass, Freddy Krc (voting member on the Grammy board) on guitar/percussion, Jack Horn (inventor of space hardware) drums. The band included songs with the talented Janet zaborowski (a favorite of my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt), Kevin Taylor, ricky pitts, and Steve Sowell. The Apollo program (which also celebrated a major anniversary date) brought huge changes and a major influx of people to the area. Here already was a robust populus from the local coastal communities which coincidentally “had a strong music program in the schools.” Over the decade, I’ve noticed the strong and steady stream of music talent on the SCENE coming from these programs and to that end, consider it definitive proof that strong budgets towards music in our schools pays back for years. Keep music alive!

LOOsE NOtEs: Continued From page 37 seX WiTh A dRAGON - Now that I have your attention... I was able to make a long overdue stop to catch the paul rameriz Band at Katie’s. paul’s first CD was of the subject title - Thought it catchy... My first encounter with rameriz was with Mark May’s band at the Hart Fest charity benefit for Brandon Hart’s family. Actually, I got to meet with “many” of you at that benefit as a lot of good came about from that event. It was at this event, I realized the region was full of super people and that live music played a part.
paul rameriz band @ Katie’s bar
Over the years, I noticed that rameriz as one of those unique talents that “plugs into the musical Cosmos” and plays at a level beyond mere mortals, and so I arrived at Katie’s early to see if this still held true.
During setup, rameriz passed along that he’s been spending time in the recording studio and enjoying touring with Lisa Morales on the west coast. While restringing his Strat, he also wrecked my “plug into the cosmos” theory as he credits his band for establishing the platform and groove he launches from. Tonight, paul was joined by paul rameriz2 on drums and Sam Weil on bass. We had crossed paths the night before at Scout Bar show as he shared his attempts to learn a solo of Aristocrat’s guitarist, Guthrie Govan, and delighted learning the ‘Crats center around either a 6 or 12 count measure but shift the one-beat to a half-count on either the 5th or 11th. This was a technique I recall often used in the 18th century, but had forgotten. Nonetheless, this simplified and explained things nicely. Never too late to remember….
As for the show, Brandi and Theresa kept the libations flowing, the crowd started arriving a 9 p.m. sharp and the band simply ripped it. rameriz has added pink Floyd’s “run Like Hell” which I really enjoyed and now launches into pinnacle solos off Steely Dan’s “Josie” which was most interesting. pick a night, any night... If live music is playing at Katie’s, it’ll be top shelf. - Continued on Page 35

LOOsE NOtEs: Continued From page 36 FLAshBACKs - Were happening at T-Bone Tom’s when I took the hint from fellow SCENE writer Sarah piña and checked out iLLumiYachty. May I suggest for the inside scoop on bands in the area, check out Sarah’s articles each month in The SCENE Magazine where she provides an early peek at upcoming shows.
iLLumiYachty @ t-bone tom’s
After hearing these folks, I had them pegged into what I would call 8-Track-era Adult rock easy listening music. The tunes you would buy off the K-Tel television ads by dialing the rotary. The tunes you rarely hear live these days. In the words of the band, Yacht rock is “soft rock, chart topping hits from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. It’s a party like no other with good vibes, positive energy and a helluva good time!” I think we’re almost saying the same thing.
One thing I like is how this band brings along their crowd as well as capturing the attention of the audience. Looking over the T-Bone’s patio, I honestly have a hard time remembering so many people there were that were simply smiling and grooving. iLLumiYachty is a relatively new band in the area playing mostly the older materials. That makes them New Old Stock. If you are a tube amp fantic, you’ll know that’s good. If you are young and not sure what Adult rock was, know that it made lots of people happy and is worth checking out. Cheers!

CROssTOWN ReNeGAdes - I first happened upon this Galveston-based band when they played at the Donnie Stimson benefit in San Leon. There was something about this band that struck me, and I knew a follow up was in order. That chance came when the Crosstown renegades played a show at Ol’ Mother’s Speakeasy on Hwy. 146. The last time we had stopped in at Mother’s was at the late Chef Brent’s benefit, and the place was looking good in July. Everything is now on the first floor and a nice softly light stage complete with psychedelic back lights.
Crosstown renegades @ Ol’ Mothers
The live music at Mother’s tends to be toward the grittier end of the spectrum and over the years, has hosted Mean Gene Kelton (scuttlebutt has it that there will be a MGK reunion happening in October. Keep your fingers crossed), The zach Tate Band, Overdrive, The Sharks, and such. Crosstown renegades is a perfect fit. These bands are notorious for not needing a sound guy, yet come across sounding perfect for the audience. Their players possess the talent called “stage presence.” The audience tends to be those not only attending the various rallies, they also live that life each and every day. If you’re not a good musician, they’re honest and will let you now.
The Crosstown renegades, led by Jerry Manetellia (port Arthur native), have been around awhile and currently lists Diamond Lou (a self taught musician with perhaps one of the best musical touches I’ve heard) on guitar, Frank Hinojosa Drums, and Stan “Dupp” Allison (also currently played locally with zach Tate & Card Castel Deluxe) on bass. They sing a good three part harmony suited to their voices. Their covers tend towards pleasing jams, with lots of tones and texture, freeing the mind as if on an open highway ride, dancing in dance halls, or enjoying outdoor festivals. One song, I’ll mention was their Bob Seeger’s interpretation of Turn The page. A few bands in the area are able to pull this off as their own: Wood & Wind with Bobbie’s sax, Big Jordan with richard rose’s fiddle, and CTr with Diamond Lou applying the bow to the Strat, ala Jimmy page, for an incredible melodic sounding piece of work. Cheers! - Continued on Page 33

LOOsE NOtEs: Continued From page 34 TOuR sTOP CLeAR LAKe - In August, we caught International Touring act, the Aristocrats at the Scout Bar concert lounge. Holy moly, what a treat! About the band and in their words, “Over the past eight years The Aristocrats – guitarist Guthrie Govan (Steven Wilson, Asia/GpS, Hans zimmer), bassist Bryan Beller (Joe Satriani, Dethklok), and drummer Marco Minnemann (Steven Wilson, Joe Satriani, Steve Hackett) – have released critically acclaimed albums, toured the world, and established themselves as one of the most musically original, refreshingly irreverent, and astoundingly entertaining instrumental rock-fusion acts on the planet.” Me? These cats are scary incredible mad scientists of sonic wizardry.
Aristocrats @ scout bar
While the stage had three vocal mics, not a single song was sung — unlike instrumental bands at Scout Bar in the past, the mics were used to chat with the audience, explaining the origins and nuances of each song, sharing aspects of the songs fringing into the domain of intellectual license, an insight I’ve not ever heard shared before.
Did I mention this band is a group of sonic wizards? These guys worked the dynamics and rests to where you could hear a pin drop — at Scout Bar, I’ve only seen this done before by robby Kreiger. You can tell lots by the audiences and this evening, the Scout Bar Concert Lounge was packed with musicians who play. You can tell from the look in their eyes and attention to the performance. My theory is from this show alone, stand ready for some great sounds hitting the local stage which will be a treat to listeners ears. One treat for me was getting to hear Steve Howe (Yes) sounds live and loud — something my ears haven’t enjoyed in quite some time.
The point? Scout Bar concert lounge… Check out their weekday lineup. Get there after work and grab a bite from the pub Level menu (upstairs) and enjoy the show. Expand your ears and your head… The next day, your boss and coworkers will notice a new you….

BACK ON The BeAT - Which would be Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack in Kemah and The Tree House. The Tree House was a favorite of my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, and I’ll be checking out their schedule during football season ahead. I say the Kemah Swamp Shack as Crazy Alan now has another location, too, with live music, at Baybrook Mall that’s on my watchlist. A couple months ago, we covered Twisting Tide, a duet of randy Wade and Jeremiah Manchalar playing five instruments at Monkey Bar and reckoned a follow-up was in order and the Kemah CAS was the place. I am reminded of what Dreamsicle band leader Andy Upchurch says “Keep an eye on the two piece groups. They’ve ‘got’ to be good as it’s just the two of them with nobody else to cover any mistakes. I thought their show in August was well played. This duet has created a unique way of handling covers to suit their style and gear, much like the local pairs of Tate and raggio, puskus & rivera, Shannon & Eisele, The revaks, The Stolls, Southbound, and Starr Jernigan with darn near anybody she chooses to perform with. Earlier in the day came thunderstorms typical, this time of the year while the evening was Kemah perfect: Cool & breezy. Diners are playing it smart these days with the Hwy. 146 construction happening, waiting until after rush hour before landing in the Lighthouse District for a local get away evening. Twisted Tides, musical duets, Kemah’s Lighthouse District, and Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack…. Autumn is around the corner... - Continued on Page 31

Diamond Jack @ Jackie’s brickhouse
LOOsE NOtEs: Continued From page 32 ONe YeAR CheCKuP - I enjoy checking out new bands on the beat, especially after a year has passed, as by this time, the groove has settled in, the band is more natural and the timing snappier. In August, it was time for the one-year checkup for Diamond Jack at Jackie’s Brickhouse. Admittedly, this band had a running start with their members already accomplished experienced entertainers. Designed to exploit the arena rock sound, they did so comfortably and
the audience response was tuning fork proof this band dialed it in. The set list I sat in on was top shelf ’70s 8track touching all corners of the greatest hits, carrying on strong through the entire evening.
iT’s A WRAP - Okay folks, like it or not, the days “are” getting shorter but don’t panic, our hometown pro baseball team looks strong this season, college football has arrived, and there’s still plenty of time for the good times ahead. I was told that I seem to always hit all the good music spots in the area. I told them my secret — and I’ll tell you here — Each month, grab a few issues of The SCENE magazine after the first Friday of the month when it hits the rack. Then, leave a copy in the lunchroom at your workplace, on your coffee table, and in your car where you can then read up on what’s happening in our area. It’s what I do, and you can, too. Got it? In the past few Octobers, between 80,000 and 100,000 thrilled spectators have attended each Wings Over Houston (WOH) Airshow at Ellington Airport (EFD) over a designated weekend. These amazing air shows have provided thrills and chills for aviation buffs, historians, and casual fans alike.
What many fans don’t know is that the shows only tell a portion of the Wings Over Houston story. It’s a story worth sharing according to Arturo Machuca, General Manager at EFD and Houston Spaceport. Machuca said he and EFD have been especially pleased to partner with Wings Over Houston over the years. Now in its 35th year, the Wings Over Houston Airshow has had an association with EFD since its inception in 1984.
“This organization is so important to our community and region,” Machuca said, “and is so much more than an exhilarating airshow once a year. Wings Over Houston honors our veterans in a significant way, and they serve tirelessly through fundraising, scholarships, and contributions to many local and national charities, nonprofit organizations, and military recruiting efforts.I’m
truly proud for the City, Houston Airports and Ellington to be associated with them, and I trust it will continue for many years.”
The WOH AirShow is an annual non-profit aviation event presented by the three Houston-area units the Houston Wing, Gulf Coast Wing and Tora, Tora, Tora - of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). The airshow focuses on honoring our military, past and present; our veterans; and on the exploration and joy of flying.
“We are here,” said Natasha Avey, WOH Operations Manager, “to promote aviation, both civilian and military, and inspire the next generation of pilots and crew members through STEM education and pure exposure to many types of aircraft, as well as the men and women that operate them.”
The airshow provides inspiration aplenty, with more than six hours of aerial events and one of the largest ground displays of modern and historic aircraft in North America. WOH was voted the fourth-best Airshow in the nation by USA Today and has been a well-loved and sought-out piece of Houston history for nearly 35 years now. Avey said the staff pride themselves on the many generations of Airshow fans WOH has inspired. Avey said that Machuca has provided valuable help and guidance to WOH, not just the weekend of the show but throughout the year. “We have loved our partnership with Ellington!” she said. “With a rich aviation history, the great new stateof-the-art Lone Star Flight Museum, and NASA in close proximity,

EFD is the perfect place to host one of the most well-respected, well attended and notable airshows in North America.”
“We hope our success and partnership continues for years to come and that we can all move forward for not only our loyal fanbase, but for the greater good of Ellington,” she continued. “ The Wings Over Houston Airshow is a world-class event and a beloved and intertwined piece of the Houston fabric. We look forward to making the show bigger and better for years and generations to come.”
This year’s October show promises to amaze, according to Avey. Two military jet teams, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds, are scheduled to perform. Additionally, the USAF F-35 Demo team will perform, along with local favorite Tora! Tora! Tora! who will reenact that fateful day at pearl Harbor and honor our fallen. There will be these acts and much, much more! The WOH staff is small and mostly volunteer-based. There is a 17-person board of directors along with Executive Director Bill roach and Avey, who work on the show year-round. “We would not and could not ever make the show happen without the thousands of volunteers and staff member volunteers,” Avey said. “They come back year in and year out to make us one of the best airshows on the planet. These people give up vacation days and time with their families to make sure we are safe, organized and running smooth. We cannot put into words how grateful we are for our Airshow faithful. They are truly what makes our show great!” Machuca is excited about the Fall performance and applauds the great work of WOH, with so much occurring behind the scenes.
“I would encourage people to mark their calendars now – it is going to be a special two days that has something for everyone. please make plans to come!”

Edible offers several catering options for year-round occasions as well as for holiday parties and the family Thanksgiving feast. But whatever the occasion, patron invites customers to stop by in person to place the order or call the store personally (281-488-7777) to talk to one of their experienced employees to ensure your arrangement is the best it can be.
“We have a beautiful store front. We love it when our customers come visit and meet the team,” said patron.
