To purchase tickets for the 2019 CAF Wings Over houston Airshow, please visit the airshow’s website, wingsoverhouston.com, or call 888-4-FLYShOW. “We are incredibly excited to bring our fans three stunning demonstration performances this year with the Thunderbirds, Canadian Forces Snowbirds, and the F-35A Lightening II full solo demo that is only performing in 19 shows this season,” said Airshow Director Bill Roach. “We’ve put together a very wellrounded lineup, which will include Air Force heritage and Navy Legacy flights, the legendary Tora! Tora! Tora! Show, and performances by aerobatic pilots Matt Chapman, Debby Rihn-harvey, and Paul Fiala, and much more. Of course, the show will feature one of the largest assemblies of flying and static displays of vintage aircraft in the world. And while there will be a lot in the air to see, we’ll also have a lot of fun activities on the ground, too.”
Produced by the Commemorative Air Force, the non-profit airshow performance line-up includes: • The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will exhibit some of the maximum capabilities of the multi-role F-16 Fighting Falcon, often flying only a few feet from wingtip to wingtip.
• The Canadian Forces (CF) Snowbirds return to houston to wow crowds, flying Canadair CT-114 Tutor aircraft in more than 50 different formations and maneuvers, including 9-plane formations.
• F-35A Lightning II aircraft assigned to Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, and will be doing a full solo aerobatic routine this year. The F-35A Lightening II, the U.S. Air Force’s latest fifthgeneration fighter, features incredible aerodynamic performance and next-generation stealth capabilities. Wings Over houston is one of only 19 shows hosting the demo this season. • World famous aerobatic pilot Sean Tucker and Team Oracle will showcase a special “duet” performance with pilot Jessy Panzer. Wings Over houston is one of only 10 airshows to host this performance this season, and this will be Tucker’s final performance in the Oracle Challenger III biplane before its re-
tirement to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
• Aerobatic performances include: Matt Chapman and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University flying the Extra 330LX aircraft; La Porte resident Deborah Rihn-harvey, world aerobatic champion and one of the highest ranked competitors in the country; and longtime aviator Paul Fiala in his Great Lakes Biplane. • The Navy Legacy Flight program comes to houston this year, featuring modern and vintage aircraft (aircraft to be finalized). • The U.S. Air Force will showcase a heritage Flight formation featuring the F-35A Lightening II and other aircraft (not yet finalized).
• Fan favorite, Tora! Tora! Tora! returns again to wow fans with their explosive reenactment of the bombing of Pearl harbor, which includes an exciting show on the ground, too. • Fans can see and meet pilots of an enormous display of static aircraft of all types and eras and should visit the show’s website to see the full list. Just a few of these aircraft include:
B-17 Flying Fortress, RAF Supermarine Spitfire, P-40 Warhawk, B-25 Mitchell, P51 Mustang, F4U Corsair, P-39 Aircobra, C-60 Loadstar, SB2C helldiver, F6F hellcat, P-47 Thunderbolt, SBD Dauntless, EA-18G Growler, A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-16C Flying Falcon, F15 Strike Eagle, F-35A Lightening II, and the massive Lockheed C-5 Galaxy cargo plane. Also on display will be numerous helicopters, NASA training aircraft, massive cargo planes, and two MIG aircraft, the MIG-17 Fresco and a MIG-21 Fishbed. • The RE/MAX Skydiving Team will open the show
with a performance choreographed to the national anthem.
• The Legends & heroes Autograph Tent will host a very large contingent of distinguished military veterans and astronauts. Several World War II veterans will appear, including ace Marine pilot Col. Dean Caswell who flew off the carrier U.S.S. Bunker hill and Col. Joe McPhail who flew with the Death Rattlers in the Pacific. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, a several esteemed astronauts and NASA leaders will appear.
To purchase tickets for the 2019 CAF Wings Over houston Airshow, please visit the airshow’s website, wingsoverhouston.com, or call 888-4-FLYShOW. Gio's Flying Pizza & Pasta
Flavorful Favorites For The Whole Family
Tasty Appetizers, Flying Pizza, an extensive selection of sandwiches & dishes, Craft Beer on draft, delicious Gelato and much more By John ennis
It is mealtime and while leaving the house is an easy decision, picking a restaurant that satisfies everyone in the family is another story altogether. Yes the struggle to get every family member on the same page or willing to compromise is real. But occasionally, one finds a venue offering a different favorite flavor for everyone in the family that when suggested, ends the debate leaving everyone satisfied without feeling they had to compromise.
One of those venues for the Ennis family is Gio’s Flying Pizza & Pasta, which has been a local favorite in the League City/Dickinson area for nearly eleven years. Owners Steve and Diana Gunnett are very hands-on and passionate about their restaurant, their employees and the clientele they serve.
“Our mission is to offer our guests authentic Italian dishes made with the freshest ingredients,” said Diana, “and we strive to achieve the highest level of customer service and satisfaction possible.”
Satisfying my spirited 6-year-old son Andy starts with the flying pizza. he loves watching the disks of dough flying through the air almost as much as he loves eating the pizza itself. Because of Gio’s open kitchen design, guests of all ages can watch the pizza makers throwing dough up high in the air and catching it with one hand, continuously tossing and spinning the dough until it’s the desired size and thickness. While this performance provides entertainment for many, especially 6-year-old boys, there’s more to this show than meets the eye. hand tossing pizza dough helps to retain moisture and creates a better crust that is light and fluffy. Recently the servers have started bringing our two kids dough to play with while they wait. And I’m assuming I’m not alone in welcoming anything that can keep hungry and often-inpatient kids occupied, making this a very nice touch. But pizza is serious business at Gio’s as pizza to go is Gio’s most popular menu item, and with gourmet toppings like grilled chicken, meatballs, artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, pesto, provolone, feta and ricotta cheeses, as well as all the usual pizza toppings, it’s no wonder Gio’s pizza pies are flying out the door.
But Gio’s is not just a ‘pizza place,’ and this fact is where my wife is won over as she has become a big fan of the extensive menu that includes Italian specialty dishes, sandwiches and a variety of unique menu items not typically found in the average pizzeria. Every Gio’s dish is prepared from scratch using only the freshest ingredients and the wide range of offerings includes fresh salads, homemade soups, hoagies, paninis, chicken dishes, classic Italian dishes like Fettuccine Alfredo and homemade Lasagna, specialty dishes like the Blue Cheese Crusted Ribeye Steak, Mamma Gio’s Meat Loaf, Rosemary Chicken Kebab, Pork Valdostana and her favorite Luca Brazi (grilled salmon with artichokes, capers & lemon sauce with a side of sautéed vegetables) among others. - Continued on Page 16

Gio’s Flying Pizza: Continnued From Page 10 “Nothing on our menu is pre-processed,” Steve explained. “We hand-cut our Ribeyes, our sauce is made fresh daily, we make the dough and roll it ourselves – everything is made with a lot of love and care.”
My wife and I usually split a dish such as the Luca Brazi or Chicken Gio’s (grilled chicken breast topped with provolone cheese, mushrooms and Gio’s special house gravy made with marsala wine) and a panini (options include the meatball panini, bruschetta panini, prosciutto panini, pollo panini and pollo club) served with waffle fries or cup of soup. (I usually push for the waffle fries.) My 10-year-old daughter enjoys the pizza, and usually shares one with her brother, but the attraction for her comes before and after the meal. She is a big fan of the appetizer menu at Gio’s. She started with the toasted ravioli but has gotten more adventurous in recent visits allowing us to enjoy more original appetizers like the popular Gator Eggs (named after the Dickinson high school mascot) and the Spicy Italian Eggrolls, my favorite. But it is the large selection of desserts (tiramisu, Italian cream cake, New York cheese cake, carrot cake, chocolate mousse cake, chocolate raspberry cake) and especially the six rotating gelato flavors that seem to be her true favorite attraction at Gio’s. My favorite attraction to Gio’s? It definitely starts with a happy, satisfied family and as my appearance would suggest, I enjoy pizza, pasta, paninis, appetizers and dessert as much as anyone, and I sure par-

take in all mentioned on every visit. But pushing Gio’s over the top for me is the solid selection of craft beer on draft and a very comfortable setting including six large hDTVs that are always tuned into sports this cord-cutting, cableless sports fan doesn’t have access to at home.
It should be noted that the updated bar area has plenty of cocktail tables and barstools to accommodate the happy hour (Monday through Friday 3 to 6 p.m.) and game day crowds.
But Gio’s goes beyond what happens inside and offers catering packages as well for large gatherings off-site, such as birthdays, weddings, and business functions, church and school events or holiday parties. Diana is the first point of contact and often serves at the event, ensuring top quality food service. For those wanting to pick up large trays of food for an event and feed a minimum of 10 people without busting the budget, Gio’s is happy to also provide plates, cutlery, serving utensils, beverages, ice and cups. And if you can’t pick it up, Gio’s will even deliver. Gio’s also has the capacity to host large parties of up to 40 people onsite.
Diana summed it up best, “We always want our guests to feel welcome and enjoy our delicious food with their friends and family in a relaxed atmosphere. We appreciate everyone who has supported us throughout the years and look forward to continued success for many years to come.”

The largest port to port race in North America will celebrate 33 years this month when more than 200 sailing yachts gather in front of Galveston’s Pleasure Pier for the start of a 150-mile race in open Gulf waters to Port Aransas.
The harvest Moon Regatta is a US Sailing “offshore” regatta open to all racing cruising spinnaker and non-spinnaker sailing yachts with a minimum length of 27 feet. More than 150 boats are expected to race this year with close to 2,000 racers, friends and family attending the awards ceremony. The regatta is organized by Bay Access, a charitable organization supporting amateur racing. It is hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club, City of Port Aransas and Mustang Island. It is up for debate among sailors if they participate each year to win or more for the popular Welcome Sailors Rum Party sponsored by Bacardi. What is not up for debate, is the tremendous growth of the regatta since the first year in 1987, when 17 yachts participated.

Legend has it that one Friday night in the Lakewood Yacht Club bar (following a long Board of Director’s meeting), the often discussed topic “we need to use our boats more” evolved into “we need to sail offshore more.”
A few more Barcardi drinks and some wild ideas followed that night, but unlike many ideas birthed at a bar and fueled by adult beverages, the concept of organizing a race to take place in the Gulf of Mexico did not fade away, but germinated into plans for an event to include as many sailors as possible for a late fall offshore sail.

Harvest Moon Regatta
Continued From Previous Page
The idea was shared with houston Yacht Club, Texas Corinthian Yacht Club and the Galveston Bay Cruising Association, as well as the LYC Board of Directors. After several meetings and lots of discussions it was determined that LYC would spearhead the effort and the harvest Moon Regatta was born. The first regatta was designed to run for about a week, sailing from the Galveston jetties to Port Isabel for race #1, then back up the coast to Port Aransas as race #2. Then there was Port A to inside the Galveston jetties for race #3 and on to the Seabrook marker two for race #4. Seventeen yachts sailed that first year. In year two (1988),
the regatta changed forever when hurricane Gilbert blew away the facilities in Port Isabel. Thus began the tradition of sailing to Port Aransas under a magnificent full moon each October.
Thanks to Mother Nature and hurricane Gilbert, the harvest Moon Regatta steadily grew from the 17 yachts of 1987 to more than 260 yachts in recent years. This was due in large part to the perfect destination, Port Aransas. This ideal Texas port allows yacht owners and sailors to use minimal days from work to join in on what can be a most memorable overnight sail down the Texas coast during what is traditionally, the best offshore sailing time of the year. For further information, please check the race website at www.harvestMoonRegatta.com.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 32
CRAzy ALAN’s sWAMP shACK & ANdy MAC - This was the first time for me to catch Andy Mac on stage. hailing from New York, Mac brings an enjoyable style to our area, and delivers this by packing along a huge single loudspeaker and enough amp for a six piece band for his solo act, altogether delivering a large concert reverbery sound. So what, you ask? I’ll testify that with this more powerful setup, I got to witness something I’ve never seen before - a Swamp Shack dinner audience applauding an extended instrumental solo. Andy Mac @ With that and a play list Crazy Alan’s that includes zeppelin, Swamp Shack Neil Young and Petty, I’ll be following up on this one. In the meantime, may I suggest you catch yourself an Andy Mac show?
NOAh’s ARK, iNWOOd dueT – We wrapped up September on Galveston Bay in the Inwood Noah’s Ark Parrots Nest Duet @ catching a new act for me, Noah’s the Inwood Duet (Dustin harper - Lead Vocals & Ark Acoustic Guitar and Travis Miter - Lead Guitar & Backup Vocals). We’ve said it before and say it again, a two-piece “has” to be good as there’s nothing for the performers to hide behind and the Inwood Duet is a highly effective combination. harper’s powerful big country voice that was pleasant to listen to and Miter played a gentle clean electric lead that sliced through the warm sultry summer night air like a razor clear across the street. I call this a Gulf Coast perfect end to September.
iT’s A WRAP - When you read this, fall will have officially arrived which means it’ll be Patio Season, our best time of the year. We’ve got lots of good things going for us: great dining, plenty of places to watch good sports, and some very exquisite live music on The SCENE. Do yourself and your friends and family a favor - grab a few copies of the SCENE for a rundown of what all is happening. See you out there!

“A few years ago, around 2015, we decided to add original songs into the set. We wanted it to be similar enough to the Eagles, though, to work into the set. At first, we didn’t tell the audiences, and people started asking us afterward, ‘hey, we know all the Eagles stuff, where is that from?’” Bourgeois recalled, laughing. This led to the band’s debut EP of all-original music, The Open Road, released in 2017.
“We’re now in the middle of recording our second album, and a little more than halfway done,” Bourgeois said.
As a SCENE exclusive, fans will read it here first!: The second album will be titled 8Tracks, which carries a lot of meaning for Bourgeois and the band.
“It still has an Eagles influence, and a lot of other ’70s influences, including Queen and Fleetwood Mac—a really retro ’70s CD,” he said. “We’re calling it 8-Tracks because it’s a concept. In the ’70s, the first time you could take music on the road was an 8-track. You couldn’t jump from song to song and really appreciated the albums more as an art form – not just the songs on the album, but the album with a style and a theme, from start to finish; not just this song or that song,” he said. While digital may be the way of the world, “people still want the physical, tangible music, with art, with a theme, that you can appreciate as a whole,” he added. While Already Gone has been busy playing everywhere in Central Texas on to Louisiana, they will be bringing their notto-be-missed Eagles fire to Jackie’s Brickhouse on October 19!
“People really don’t remember how many hits they really had,” he said. And for those skeptical, die-hard Eagles fans?
“The first time we heard our lead vocalist Clint sing, our jaws just dropped. You can close your eyes, and he’s either Don henley or Glenn Frey, depending on the song. he just has an incredible voice,” Bourgeois said. “I also like to tell the story about this couple who came up to us one night and said they had seen the Eagles a hundred times, and we sounded more like the Eagles in the early days, when they were still playing clubs and colleges. We put on a rock show; we don’t just sit there and strum guitars. Rock is not about perfection. It’s about attitude, it’s about energy,” he said. So head on down, take in that attitude and energy of the rock collective that is Already Gone, and “Take It to the Limit” starting at 9 p.m. “In the City” of Kemah at Jackie’s Brickhouse on October 19! Catch them now before they’re “already gone” until next year.

Velcro Pygmies @ Jackie’s Brickhouse
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 33
JACKie’s BRiCKhOuse - The Velcro Pygmies and Pygheads – It’s been two years since the passing of Velcro Pygmy bassist Jacob Sanders in a fishing accident. The band had reached a pinnacle and it was the great folks at Jackie’s Brickhouse that took the chance bringing this in your face, loud and bright act from Louisville, Kentucky into our neighborhood. Sanders has since been replaced with bassist Maximus hawk and has melded well with Frontman Cameron, AxemanChase and Drummer Chris, pretty much picking up where they left off during this glitter filled evening at the Brickhouse If you’re one of the band’s notorious Pyghead followers at the show, you know what I’m talking about. Aside from their ever clever antics, monster electric bill stage, and arena level music, the show featured an extended instrumental medley from Chase of pretty much all of the famous guitar solos from the era, performed with gusto and ease confirming his command of the fretboard. One aspect unique to their show which wins fans over is the sincerity of Cameron when he takes the message even further and delivers to the VIPs of our world – young kids in the classroom. I’m not sure how well this would have went over back when I was in grade school, but I’m all good with what this band is doing and would even consider supporting Cameron’s Presidential Run in 2020 – “Be a difference… Make a Difference.”
KATie’s – It was a Wednesday night at Katie’s, and it was a packed house at 8 p.m. as the audience waited for the master guitarist, storyteller, the legend, the one the only Mr. Bert Wills! Bert has blessed us all for several decades with his wonderful talent on his many guitars, his harmonica and his voice. he connects immediately with his audience and gets you comfortable and settled in for an amazing evening as he engages you with his wonderful stories of his life and experiences. You can be sure you will have some great laughs and will feel like a friend who has been invited into his colorful life. his crystal clear magic on his many guitars Bert Wills @ Katie’s Bar mesmerizes the audience as he plays and sings just as smooth as melted butter, and fills the stage like a one man band. This evening’s show was an easy three hours nonstop and only got hotter and greater as Bert and his instruments became one. I have heard many stories over the years from other musicians of a time in their life when they were lucky enough to play with and learn from this master musician. Needless to say it was an amazing night of great songs, great stories and laughs with a club full of decades many friends and followers in our little Texas town. ~ Paula - Continued on Page 28

friends you know, order a cool fresh drink off the menu (we had Mind Erasers, Russian Pirates and Pain Killers), enjoy the live music (this month, we took in a Bilge Pump show), chat with the new friends you haven't met yet, watch cool contests with winners scoring top shelf rum. Nope, didn’t see any such action out in California. Just here down the road in San Leon at Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar. Noteworthy was the Bilge Pumps awarding the distillery a nice model of a tall ship built on a rum bottle where it now sits in the tasting room. Railean Distillery is one of the Bilge Pumps’ favorite places and one of ours, too. See you there!

WesT COAsT deTOuR – I decided I’d take the to the west coast for a week. The weather, wine and dining was exquisite. Unfortunately, our trip did not include any live music stops; although, we did get to spend a few hours the haight & Ashbury neighborhood and visited the homes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. We made it home in time for a week of Imelda and like many of you, kept things simple. hope everybody made it through safe and dry. After a week of Imelda, people were definitely looking to shake off their cabin fever and onto the SCENE we all went. We checked out fantastic shows at T-Bone Tom’s with Van Wilks, then onto Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack where we caught Andy Mac for the first time, Jackie’s Brickhouse for a blowout show with the Velcro Pygmies, Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar had a full house and the Bilge Pumps, and finally wrapped up the month at Noah’s Ark with The Inwood Duet.
T-BONe TOM’s & VAN WiLKs - Driving into the Kemah Lighthouse District was a piece of cake now that the turn lanes are in place with concrete. I still waited for the Boardwalk dinner rush pass and as usual, drove friendly, the Texas way. The parking lot at T-Bone’s was still filled so I parked in the adjacent festival/city parking lot. hmmm….. While walking to T-Bone’s, the sound was definitely different approaching festival levels – Nice! On the Landshark stage was the return of Van Wilks and a set of the LARGEST JBL mains and subwoofers I’ve EVER seen at this place. hOLY COW! The sound was warm and pure as if I was listening to a set of Koss headphones and as usual, the covered palapa was filled, not only diners but a crowd of Van Wilks music fans he’s grown here over the years as well. Wilks is a guitar monster hailing from ATX. “he has toured internationally with such acts as zz Top, heart, Van halen and Aerosmith to name a few. he has also been featured on recordings with the likes of Willie Nelson, Eric Johnson and zz Top. he has won multiple Austin Music Awards, won awards as Best Guitarist and Best Blues-Rock Band four years in-a-row and has been voted into the Austin Chronicle Texas Music hall of Fame.” Credit goes to Galen Mendlenka from bringing this guitar virtuoso to T-Bone’s. Such a treat! Wilks’ guitar rig featured two vintage Fender amps in tandem for a true sonic experience. I picked up five of his CDs with dates from 1980 through 2012, gave them an audition, impressed with his continued musical evolution over the decades, and convinced this man can play “anything.” his CD, “Running From Ghosts,” scored high on my list in the writing, playing, recording, and listen-ability categories. Come to think of it, all of his CDs scored just as well. Unfortunately, I broke his 2016 CD, “21st Century Blues” while opening it but now get to look forward to scoring a copy next time he passes through. Keep your eyes peeled, you’ll find out about it in The SCENE.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 36 ViTAMiN-R – A TRiBuTe TO CheVeLLe - Like many tribute bands, audiences are sometimes mixed on either observe and appreciate or rock the tails off. Both of which happened when the show came to Scout Bar in September. The sonic fidelity of this four piece act matched up well with the real McCoy and there was some good old fashioned mosh pit action. Refreshing!
The band’s web pages are interestingly silent about the members of this group. I’m assuming out of respect for the music, which is noteworthy. I did recognize guitarist Cody Stephenson from his days with Elysian and award winning days back with A.D. Rowntree hosted the popular Sunday evening series at Scout Bar. Tis good seeing the music play on…. Great job! - Continued on Page 34

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 37
FOLLOW uP PART 1 - Earlier in the year, we caught Bag of Donuts (BOD) at the Baytown 4th of July Festival and knew a Bag of Donuts follow up was in order. In 2019, the BOD became the first cover band inducted into the Louisiana Music hall of Fame – move over Pete Fountain. In September, while hanging out and researching The Southern Shanks Band, they scored opening act duties for the BOD, and we got our follow up. When we saw our first BOD show, they performed on the big stage in an open air setting with the audience spread out across the hillside. In September, we got to see this band put on an in-your-face show in an up close setting. holy Moly what a show! We’ve spoken on several occasions on catching national and international touring acts up close and personal in the cozy places such as Scout Bar. Put this show in the same boat. Crazy fun had by all!
FOLLOW uP PART 2 - We had previously caught Wake zone for the first time at Railean Distillery & Buccaneer Bar. That show was a mountain of fun, and we knew a follow up was in order, which we did in September at the King’s Bierhaus. This is one band that really enjoys playing music, which makes their shows so much fun to watch. With focus on music from the late ’70s and ’80s, this band is party ready. I’m thinking New Year’s Eve Party ready. With their hometown listed as Seabrook, the band’s members include: Jenni hess (Lead Singer with a cool bluesy gristly voice), Chris hess (Lead Guitar), Chris Kidwell (Guitar), Chris Easley (Bass), Kirk Swann (Drums), and George Swann (Sax, Keys, Percussion). In the tradition of Texas garage bands, this group has a good army of followers. I’m looking forward to watching this group grow. Kings Bierhaus is a fun place for patio season events with a family oriented setting. hopefully, we’ll see more of this Wake zone and Kings Bierhaus on The SCENE. - Continued on Page 35

Southern Shanks Band @ Cock-eyed Seagull
Loose Notes
Seasons Greetings Good People! And with that, I mean we’ve survived another houston summer, fared mostly (?) well during tropical storm Imelda, looking strong with the baseball playoffs, and all of our football teams still have a shot. Patio season has arrived! September was a busy month for me, and I’m graced to have gotten help from friend Paula who helped out with this month’s Loose Notes at Katie’s featuring local icon, Bert Wills. Paula is a long-time supporter of local live music and a tuning fork for the good stuff. hope you enjoy her report. Let’s run down some of all that went down:
by Andy Eng
ONe-yeAR CheCKuP - I’ve been following the Southern Shanks Band since their inception and again in September at the Cock-eyed Seagull. This project is the brainchild of Michael Shanks (from MisFit Toys), a person constantly driven to achieve something new. Along side Shanks and includes Rachel Walker (vocals), Matt Peters (lead guitar), James Shabarekh (drums), and Danny Douglass (bass). Their sound is southern BIG with the powerful voices of Shanks and Walker. Rachel has perhaps the best soulful smoky voice happening in the area. hearing her sing makes my spine tingle. I do miss her covering the Eurythmics but “moving on”… Peters first appeared on my radar with earlier metal bands. Along side Shanks, I’ve gotten to enjoy hearing his skillful articulations on the fretboard which are extremely pleasing. Shabarekh is the quintessential Chewbacha every band needs holding down the ship on the kit. he is big, fun, and reliable. Danny Douglass is one of those who can play anything he hears in his head and an inventive head at that. The only genre I’ve never heard Douglass play is Jazz but would not doubt he can dominate in that domain, too. As for the checkup? The Southern Shanks Band has a unique sound that’s recognizable as their own, entertainment suitable for the big festival stages, and one we can call homegrown. Nicely done! - Continued on Page 36

BONEZ Draught House and Sports Grill launches in Clear Lake! By sarah Piña
Looking for a great place to watch your favorite sports teams on a wall of hDTVs, grab a cold one and enjoy some delicious grub? Or maybe a fun spot to hang with friends, enjoy a few shots or mixed drinks and dance away the weekend? how about a draught house offering a great selection of craft beers and ciders to enjoy while shooting some pool, throwing darts or challenging your date to a game of giant Connect Four? Or even just a comfortable lounge at which to kickoff or end your evening? For those scenarios and more, look no further than the new BONEz Draught house & Sports Grill, located at 18301 Egret Bay Blvd Ste A in Webster (upstairs from the popular live music venue Scout Bar). With more than 50 beers on tap (and even more in bottles), 30-plus screens with sports, a variety of games, DJ booth and dance floor and a savory menu, BONEz combines the best of a high-end sports bar, tap house, pub, lounge, game room, and night club and offers a sure-fire recipe for fun and good times.
“BONEz is really an easy place to have a burger and watch the game. We love all of our local teams! But we also make it a fun late night party atmosphere along with DJs, especially on the weekends,” said General Manager Aline Wilson. “And in addition to vintage video games and pool, we also have steel-tipped darts for our dart boards,” she added, especially great news for darts enthusiasts!
BONEz also has an extensive craft beer board – but not just any beer board. The latest in digital bar management, DigitalPour is an electronic menu which tells you everything you need to know about the 52 taps BONEz is offering at any given time. “It gives you a complete description – from the name of the beer, to the style, color, price, and alcohol content,” Wilson said. “It’s great because we do rotate many of the craft beers and keeps it very up-to-date,” she said. The board also has a real-time display of the keg level, and a DigitalPour app is available for phones so patrons know what is currently being offered even before arriving.
The variety of menu items are also on another level. Though BONEz offers everything from mouth-watering burgers to hot ‘n’ crispy chicken wings to tacos, even more exciting items are in the works!
“We will be updating the menu with vegetarian alternatives for burgers, as well as keto, low-carb options,” Wilson explained. “We are excited to offer these selections that accommodate other ways of eating not typically offered by local pubs.”
The innovative establishment showcases sleek, modern design and décor, a spacious dance floor complete with disco balls to get down to the DJs on the weekends, and a stage that alternates with more acoustic and other live sets throughout the week, including open mic nights.
“We now have a private party room available as well. It has screens, so there’s the option of presenting a running slideshow if you like for your event, or a way in which you won’t miss out on your favorite game. There are many possibilities!” Wilson said.
The private room at BONEz is currently booking for private events including holiday parties, corporate events, and more; contact Aline Wilson at 281-532-6570 as dates are filling up quickly, especially for the holidays. A great place to hang out before or after the next Scout concert (refer to The SCENE’s Scout Bar ad in this issue). When you stop by and congratulate the BONEz team on their launch, make sure to tell them you saw them in The SCENE!

Skelton can also trace his roots in music to his childhood, and as an adult found himself playing with some of the biggest names in the music business. “My dad started teaching me Elvis songs when I was 4 or 5, and I was also singing at a Pentecostal church. Fast-forward to some years later, I had moved to Los Angeles, got signed with Universal Records at 18, and released a couple of records,” he said. At the that time, his former band Speak No Evil was playing shows with the likes of Megadeth, System of a Down, Godsmack, Staind, Sevendust, and 311, just to name a few, and one of their songs, “hold Your Breath” was in heavy rotation on rock radio. however, at the end of the day the band wasn’t everything it was cracked up to be, personal life circumstances were changing, and Texas was calling Skelton’s name back home. “At that point, I came back here, played in different cover bands, including Big Richard where we were doing something like 280 shows a year. Eventually we just went our separate ways and were jamming here and there with different people,” Skelton recalled.
Tamborello had his own stints in and out of the music scene, which eventually brought him and Skelton to give it a go for a few shows themselves.
“I took a break of about three years and joined the fire department in League City…at the time, I had gotten burnt out on the music scene, but later decided to get back into it. That’s when I contacted Curtis and we started playing shows here and there,” he said.
“I met R.J. about 6 or 7 years ago. When he contacted me I thought, well, this could work. he’s a friendly guy, I’m a friendly guy. he cuts a joke, I cut a joke. A couple cold beers and some Vegas bombs later, we said, let’s do this!” Skelton laughed.
The duo went a few shows, only forming a few months ago, before getting a name which made it more official. The hilarious name of their duo and how it came to be is in itself a testament to the comedic chemistry that occurs during any one of their shows.

Eagles Tribute Hits Jackie’s Brickhouse on October 19
By sarah Piña What started as a Beatles tribute has ultimately become one of the most successful and popular Eagles tribute bands in Texas and beyond!— and Already Gone will already be back late October for their last show of the year at Jackie’s Brickhouse!
“We first formed as a band in 2004. It was meant to be a Beatles tribute, but many places don’t want three hours of the Beatles, though we didn’t agree,” Jay Bourgeois, bassist and background vocalist of the band laughed. “So we thought, what’s another band that is complimentary? We all loved the Eagles, so we ran with that, and split nights about half Beatles, half Eagles. Eventually, the Eagles tribute eclipsed that of the Beatles, and we retired that band as it was last year,” he said.
The current lineup of Already Gone includes Bourgeois (bass/vocals); Danny Lee (drums/percussion & vocals); harry Ochsenbein (lead guitar/talk box & vocals); Johnny Ono (guitar/keys/harmonica & vocals); and Clint Springer (lead vocals & guitar)—and, as it turns out, all are original artists, and all write their own music, which has also contributed to making them quite the distinguished Eagles tribute.
