LETTErS From TWHbEA PrESIdENT Intro from President Marty Irby My Fellow Members: As I enter my final week of service as your President, I want to thank you for your support, efforts, dedication, and encouragement over the past two years. I am honored to have had the privilege of representing you the members, our great horse, and The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ & Exhibitors’ Association. Your loyalty to the association and horse we love so much is greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten. Over the course of the next few days leading up to our Annual Awards Banquet, General Membership Meeting, International Board of Directors Meeting & Election, you will receive a series of letters and articles I have prepared with my thoughts about our future, after having listened to thousands of TWHBEA members, mainstream equine organizations, other industry organizations, and many of our Past Presidents and leaders over the past two years. I have a few interesting stories, and hope you will take time to read them. Many of our International Board of Directors will be traveling to Tennessee for our annual events, and I encourage each of you to contact your directors and express your views on the future of our horse, registry, and association. We all represent you, and we value your input and communication. The upcoming week, meetings, and election may be the most critical in the history of our breed, and for the survival of the show horse in all divisions. This will be one of the most crucial General Membership meetings to attend and voice your opinions. The future course of our breed will be determined by the outcome of the next week, and we must all set agendas aside for the welfare, protection, and longevity of our great breed. We must all recognize that our decisions will have a major economic impact on our breeders, trail riders, trainers, owners, and exhibitors. Our decisions will have an impact on the physical soundness of our breed, and the fiscal soundness of our registry & association that remains the oldest and largest within this great
Page 32 / The Scoop
breed since 1935. We must make sound choices in every area, and sound business decisions for TWHBEA during these challenging times. I look forward to my final week as President, and am thankful, grateful, and honored to have served something greater than myself by serving TWHBEA and the greatest horse on earth, The Tennessee Walking Horse! All the best, Marty Irby, President The Wisdom of the Past My Fellow Members: Today’s writing represents the second of six such letters during my final week as President of TWHBEA. When I was first elected President in December of 2010, I decided to run from the floor just a few days before the election. The last President who had successfully been elected from the floor was the honorable Mr. Bill Harlin who served as TWHBEA President on two different occasions for two terms consecutively. I only had a few days to campaign, and get the word out, and I knew the odds were against me. The issue of whether to run or not kept me up nearly every night in the weeks before the December meeting of that year. When I finally admitted to myself that I was being called to service, I never felt nervous, and I knew it was the right thing to do. By a small margin of 4 votes, your International Board of Directors elected me at the age of 31. I really didn’t know what to do next. After the election, I spent the next two weeks traveling in Italy on a long planned vacation. I had much time to think and contemplate over what steps I should first take to begin my term in the right direction. I often wondered why very few of our leaders consulted with our Past Presidents, and why their combined knowledge and wisdom was not utilized as a group. Our industry seemed to always make the same mistakes over and over again, and I wanted to keep from making those same mistakes once again. I decided my first order of action as President would be to request a joint meeting with all of the TWHBEA Past Presidents at the association headquarters the first week of the New Year. A large number of these fine gentlemen came, and discussed the last 60-70 years of repeated history. Mr. “Red” Etheredge, who was President when the Horse Protection Act was passed said “you are fighting the same battles we were forty years ago when I was President.” Each member of the group agreed, and gave their words of wisdom. From that and future meetings, I can tell you the best decision I ever made was the first one. I am thankful to each of these gentlemen and would like to recognize their efforts, contributions, and continued service to the association we all love so much. There is no group of individuals I have met that love our association and horse more than these and no group who contains their collective wisdom. With that said I am proud and honored to inform you that on November 3, 2012, our TWHBEA Executive Committee, by unanimous consent, officially formed our TWHBEA Past Presidents Committee under the Immediate Past President on the EC. Please click here to view the official document presented to our Past Presidents at our recent meeting of the group on November 15, 2012. The formation of this group of individuals, who will meet with future Presidents twice per year, will help maintain continuity, provide a tremendous wealth and resource of history and knowledge, and will keep future leaders from making the same mistakes of the past. I am very proud of the formation of this committee, and
NEWS
The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry LETTErS From TWHBEA PrESIdENT, cont’d am thankful to the Executive Committee for seeing the benefits of our past leaders. I am grateful to our Past Presidents for their support, encouragement, wisdom; guidance, lectures, and willingness to help me, a young President who they helped keep from making many mistakes I would have otherwise made. I am honored to become a part of such a group, and will continue to help and serve our great horse and association alongside these fine gentlemen. In service to our horse, Marty Irby, President Where We Are Today My Fellow Members: This will not be the most popular letter of the week, but it is the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts. As the third of my series of six letters this week, I hope the information contained herein will serve you, TWHBEA, and our great horse well. Please keep in mind that I am a very positive individual, and as our Executive Director Mr. Thomas frequently says “I am not being negative, just facing reality.” I am thankful to have been blessed with such a professional, talented, and world class Executive Director as Ron Thomas during my time as President. He is the most straight forward, direct, to the point, and honest man I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I thank him for his willingness to serve TWHBEA, and for stepping out of retirement to help further the breed registry and great horse we all love so much. More than one year ago Dr. Chester Gipson, USDA APHIS Deputy Director traveled to Lewisburg to meet with our TWHBEA EC, and present the hard cold truth that we as a breed were in danger of losing our pads and action devices. He delivered the same message in a joint meeting with the Walking Horse Trainers’ Association (WHTA) the next day, and again later with the Walking Horse Owners’ Association (WHOA). Mr. Thomas was one of the first men to step forward and present the word Dr. Gipson had delivered, and as your President I felt it my duty to deliver the message as well. On a number of occasions, during group meetings of TWHBEA, WHTA, WHOA, & The Celebration I reminded many of what the original intent of our meetings was, and that was to discuss the performance horse pads and action devices, and to help establish “One Voice” for our industry. Dr. Gipson specifically said that he was willing to help us, but the matter was a separate issue from inspections, inspection processes, and inspection services. Over the course of several meetings, a number of our TWHBEA representatives were ridiculed, and slandered for merely delivering a message from the government. A short time later, the USDA held listening sessions around the country regarding pads, action devices, the HIO system & inspections, and the all too common topic of soring. We as an industry and we as a TWHBEA Executive Committee drew our line in the sand and said “no” to making any changes or modifications to the pads and action devices. A short time later came the release of the Jackie McConnell video. When the release came out I was quite shocked, and in the middle of judging the German Championship in Wemding, Germany. Being located in a foreign country while President of TWHBEA when the video was released really showed me a different perspective, and how our horse, breed, owners, exhibitors, and trainers were viewed internationally. Most compared performance horse people to barbarians, and many have thrown all of us in the same category as Michael Vick. Please understand I am not saying they are right, just merely delivering a message that “perception is
reality.”
I recognize and realize many of those in our industry have been in denial about training techniques applied to horses in all divisions of our show horse segment. At the same time, I realize, understand, have enough knowledge, and have been involved with enough truly great and talented animals that I believe we do have sound padded performance horses. What percentage, I honestly don’t know. I do believe in what we have bred over the past 70 years. I believe in our show horse, its talent, ability, stamina, and gifted kindness. The problem does not lie in the performance horse, its pads, or action devices. The problem lies within people who are willing to cheat and abuse a horse to make him mimic or imitate a truly great and natural show horse. How will we ever stop the cheating? We won’t. Someone will always try to cheat. Someone will always try to take advantage of the kindness and love a horse has for them. Please realize and recognize that no law or amendment eliminates a problem, it merely regulates it. That is the unfortunate truth of government regulation and humanity. There will always be people that run stop signs, and there will always be people that will rob banks. I am believer in the old saying “you are what you think.” Far too often we think about the issue of soring and catching people who break the law, when we should equally be focusing on promoting sound horses, education in training, and rewarding those who are doing the right things. Our industry has very little record of being proactive, and has become far too reactive. In the upcoming days you will see the beginnings of a new program at TWHBEA, under our Horse Shows Division that will start the process of rewarding those who are doing the right thing, and those who are showing sound horses. This program is long overdue. The concept of “The Champions Cup” which has been approved in concept by our Horse Show Committee and our current EC will be presented at the upcoming meetings. In recent weeks and months we have seen major veterinary organizations speak out against our show horse. We have few friends, and very little time to work together to save our show horse. So many have asked for “One Voice” and if it is not too late already, that “One Voice” must be the voice at TWHBEA, The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ & Exhibitors’ Association which remains the oldest and largest organization in our industry since its inception in 1935. As a Lifetime Member I stand behind TWHBEA as the leader of our industry, as do thousands of others. I hope you will all stand up for TWHBEA, and voice your opinions and become a vocal part of this association at the upcoming General Membership meeting on Friday and International Board of Directors Meeting & Election on Saturday! Our association and our great horse need you! With truth and dedication, Marty Irby, President The Generation of Change My Fellow Members: Today represents the fourth of six such letters during my final week in service as your President. I have been truly blessed to have had the honor of leading this organization and serving the horse we all love so much for the past two years. When I was first elected to the International Board of Directors in 2005, I asked Mrs. Sharon Brandon for her advice and she said “always put the horse first, and the rest will take care of itself.” When I was first elected as President I recall Mrs. Brandon advising me that this post was “not for the weary or faint hearted.” She

NEWS
The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry LETTErS From TWHBEA PrESIdENT, cont’d was right, and her advice over the past decade has meant the world to me. She is a first class lady, and one who has more knowledge than my generation may ever forget. I have missed Mrs. Brandon tremendously this year, but am thankful that a great friend and able young attorney named Miss Alie Napier stepped in to fill her position as Secretary on the Executive Committee during my final year as President. This seemed to be a very honorable changing of the guard, and I appreciate both Mrs. Brandon’s and Miss Napier’s willingness to work together preparing for the 2012 EC, for betterment of our great horse, and for our great association. Miss Napier is just one of a number of individuals from “the next generation” who have become actively involved at TWHBEA over the past decade or so. I can never thank both of these two ladies enough for all they have done. Seven years ago during my first meeting as a director, I remember looking around the room and seeing very few if any other individuals from my generation or age group other than our current Horse Shows VicePresident, Mr. Tracy Boyd who this year, had the foresight to pair our National Futurity with our World Versatility Show for the first time since their inception. I later remember seeing a young Colonel Dan Starnes attend as a director from Kentucky, and our current Enforcement Vice-President: Mrs. Christy Lantis come to represent the State of California. Over the next few years, we began to see more and more individuals from our generation step forward in leadership positions and overall active involvement at TWHBEA. In December of 2006, I ran from the floor for the position of Marketing Vice-President, and won by a small margin. Newly elected, I entered the board room at our first meeting and noticed I was the youngest by at least twenty years. That was a hard group to gain respect from, and a tremendous learning experience, but nevertheless an experience I would never trade. The 2007 EC was a diverse but dedicated group, who today I have great respect for. They taught a young EC member a lot, and helped prepare me for future leadership. During the past three years I have been fortunate enough to work with more and more individuals from our generation such as our current Admin/Fiscal Vice-President: Mr. Rob Cornelius from Alabama, current Performance Horse Vice-President: Mike Hicks from Tennessee, and our tremendously dedicated International Director from Germany, Mrs. Denise Bader-Keyser. Each of these individuals has contributed countless hours and days of service to our great horse and to our association. Time well spent, and time that will help move our breed forward for the next generation and for generations to come. Today we see highly qualified individuals such as Mr. Jason Bachert and Mrs. Caroline Hoffman serving on our International Board from Missouri, and both nominated for the 2013 Executive Committee. We have been afforded the talents of Director from Tennessee, Ms. Leah Boyd and now see young Dr. Brian Wright representing the Wright Family on the TWHBEA Master Breeders’ Award Committee. Most recently we welcome the addition of Miss Jessica Hlebak from the State of North Carolina to our International Board. More and more young individuals are becoming involved at TWHBEA and it is very exciting to see this. I believe more and more young people have stepped forward because they care about the longevity of this breed and welfare of our horse. They, along with others can see the significant shift in today’s society, and recognize that change within our breed must occur, or we will have little future for the generations that follow. Now is the time for change and now is the time for more individuals from our generation to step forward and work to help support our horse,

and association. YOU are the ones that can change things; YOU are the ones our great horse is waiting on. There are thousands of you out there, and I encourage each of you to become involved. From someone who first became involved in service at TWHBEA seven years ago this week, at the age of 26, I can promise that in a short period of time you can have a long term, lasting impact on our breed, and you can make a difference. Our horse is waiting on the generation of change to move full speed ahead into the twenty-first century. Please know that as members you can become involved by serving on a committee under the Vice-Presidents and Members At Large on the Executive Committee, you can volunteer time at our association, you can help start new horse shows and trail rides, you can represent our breed and TWHBEA at trade shows and fairs around the world, and you can serve our horse in many other areas. All you have to do is contact our International Board Members, TWHBEA staff, or Executive Committee Members, and we will help point you in the direction your talents may be best utilized. We welcome your help and support, and we at TWHBEA need each and every one of you all over the world. We are the generation who can spread the positive aspects of our horse and plant the seeds for the growth of our breed in every country on planet earth. From the generational perspective, I present these thoughts with no disrespect to any other generation, and thank those who have come before us, and those who continue to serve today for the time, efforts, dedication, and talents that have served our horse well. I believe our generation can combine the wisdom of the past, with the knowledge of today, to create a bright tomorrow that our horse has never seen. I can see our horse in every country, I can see our horse being loved by millions, I can see our horse as more than just the number one breed in America; I can see it as the number one breed on earth. How long will it take? It will only take as long as we imagine it will. If we all open up our minds to change and look forward to a new tomorrow then the reality of today will show us the next steps we must take, and give us the vision and imagination to see our great horse move into the future. If it seems hard to imagine such a feat, then I remind you our breed registry, The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ & Exhibitors’ Association was the only equine breed registry in the United States of America to show membership growth in 2011, and our association showed membership growth for the first time in nearly a decade by nearly 1,000. This feat is one I am very proud to have been a part of, and one most would have said seemed unlikely to have been accomplished. It occurred because we decided to just make a few changes. We decided to pick up the phone and begin calling our members. We decided that what we were doing wasn’t working and we had to do something different. In closing I ask you please consider one question: What were AT&T and Apple’s primary products, and primary source of revenue thirty years ago, and what are they today? The answer was once something that is now obsolete, and today is most likely in the palm of your hand. One of the Fathers of our Country, Benjamin Franklin once said “When you are done changing, you are done.” For generations to come, Marty Irby, President TWHBEA The Breed Registry Since 1935

The purpose of the Interim Committee is to investigate the contributions of horse farms to the state’s agricultural economy and examine those industries involved in the breeding and raising of horses. Mr. Irby, Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Starnes presented to the committee information concerning the Tennessee Walking Horse and its history and presence in Kentucky. The information was well received and the meeting proved to be quite productive for all involved.

To date it has gained the support of 22 other legislators. In summary it seeks to: 1. Eliminate the use of a weighted shoe, pad, wedge, hoof band, or other device or material at a horse show, horse exhibition, or horse sale or auction. 2. Eliminate the use of an action device on any limb of a Tennessee Walking, a Racking, or a Spotted Saddle horse at a horse show, horse exhibition, or horse sale or auction. There are several other amendments within this proposition that would negatively impact every discipline of the Tennessee Walking Show Horse. We urge you to contact your representative by visiting this website: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/hr6388?utm_ campaign=govtrack_email_update&utm_source=govtrack/email_ update&utm_medium=email From this site you may read the bill in its entirety as well as instantly send feedback to your district representatives by simply entering your comments and home address. Please take the time to let your representatives know that you are strongly opposed to this bill as written.

GENERATOR’S DOUBLE COIN BROUGHT THE FOOTHILLS OF MORGANTON, NORTH CAROLINA TUMBLING DOWN IN BLUE RIBBON STYLE! MORGANTON, NC – The North Carolina Foothills Jubilee Horse Show was held in Morganton, NC on November 17, 2012. Trainers started gathering just in time to prepare customer’s horses for a very competitive show. Familiar faces could be seen all across the grounds. The announcer called a total of 88 entries to the gate. With 28 classes on the schedule, the Honorable Michael Burton of Cookeville, TN had a night filled with great horses ahead of him. Mr. Burton did a fantastic job of keeping the show moving along. The most anticipated and exciting class of the evening is always the Walking Horse Championship. Two entries answered the call to the gate and after much deliberation by Judge Burton, Generator’s Double Coin and Allen Abee rode to the the blue ribbon for owner Alex Helton. A well deserved reserve in the class went to Lucky Number 7 with David Polk for owner Dennis Abbott. The Scoop would like to congratulate all of the winners at the show and the show management for hosting a successful horse show! For more information, please visit our FREE website at www.thescooponline.com.

CANCER FEARS THE WALKER!
Riding for a Reason….The Tennessee Walking Horse Industry supports so many charities! The trail ride for Riding For Cancer was held on November 18, 2012. The trail ride was held at Dave Coffee’s Farm, located in Petersburg, TN, again this year. There was a large turnout with more than 200 plus riders and horses supporting a great cause! Team Elite Physical Therapy along with the partnership of Corner Cleaners hosted the trail ride. All proceeds to this event went to the American Cancer Society for Relay For Life. Riders donated $10 per horse and for an additional $5, food was provided. Any additional donations were greatly appreciated. Joel Johnson cooked his famous grandfather’s, Hoss Cartwright’s, recipe and everyone enjoyed the yummy chili supper. Shirts were also on sale for $15 at the event. The shirts were printed with Cancer Fears the Walker! It was so neat to see so many riders come out to support the ride and wear the shirts proudly. Elite Physical Therapy has several shirts available for your purchase. You may pick one of these spectacular shirts up at 1116 North Main Street Shelbyville, TN or call 931-684-0027. The ride started at 11:00 am and most riders wrapped it up around 4:00 pm, but many continued riding until late. The trail ride was supported heavily by the Walking Horse and Spotted horse Industries. Our breed does so many wonderful things throughout the year to support many charities, not only at horse shows, but trail rides too. Please make plans to attend the spring ride in 2013 located at Dave Coffey’s Farm in Petersburg, TN. Once again, the Tennessee Walking Horse breed is so versatile and our love for our horse is shown in so many ways. Many winners from the Saturday night horse show got in late and got up early to support the ride. The Scoop is proud to showcase this ride in our publication to show the world just how great our Industry is.
