2012 Walking Horse Trainers’ Association The Coolsprings Marriott in Franklin Tn. was the place to be on Saturday December 1, 2012. First on the agenda was the Tennessee Walking Horse Trainers Association meeting. After dealing with business, it was time to have some fun with the silent auction spearheaded by Jeff Givens and the annual banquet on Saturday evening. At 8:30 am, the WHTA Board of Directors met to discuss the year’s events and the organization’s progress, and to identify future goals. Following the Board meeting, the general Association met. The focus of this meeting was to discuss issues that are critical to the Walking Horse industry, and to nominate and vote for the organization’s newest leaders. Trainers were also able to take advantage of this time to renew their licenses and memberships. Following this meeting the trainers enjoyed a holiday luncheon. Leading the pack and advancing from Vice President to President was Mickey McCormick with Bill Cantrell serving as 1st Vice President and David Landrum 2nd Vice President. The new directors for the year will be Dale Watts, Brandye Mills, Philip Trimble, Wayne Dean and Chris Bobo. The Ladies Auxiliary meeting followed the trainers meeting, coming to order at 11:15 am. Open for discussion were events of 2012 and the upcoming plans for the 2013 show season. Sarah Smith was elected president for the upcoming year with Lynn Womack holding the position as first Vice President, Heather Beard as second Vice President, Marquerite Sims was elected secretary and Susan Coleman will serve as treasurer. The Ladies Auxiliary celebrated their 41st year of dedicated service to the Walking Horse industry.

At the awards banquet, President Sarah Smith presented the awards with the assistance of Auxiliary Awards Committee Chairman, Jada Callaway and her daughter Julia. The Celebration Award was presented to Jill Derickson aboard Powerstroke’s Evening Star for their World Championship title in the Trainer’s Auxiliary class. The awards for the high point member of the year went to Olympic Fashion. The gold winner was Heather Beard, silver winner, Susan Coleman and bronze winner, Dru McCormick. The Equitation High Point Awards were presented next by the auxiliary. The youth 12-14 years of age recipient was Kaitlyn Rippy. The youth 15-17 years of age winner was awarded to Allison Thorson. The Rookie of the Year award was given to Kelley Mills. The Mudslide Slim Lifetime Achievement winner was Freda Dean and the Auxiliary Member of the Year award went to Susan Coleman.

Annual Meeting and Banquet The awards banquet began at 6:00pm with a cocktail hour in the hallway outside of the ballroom. At 7:00pm sharp, the doors to the banquet room opened, and trainers, their families and friends eagerly entered the banquet room ready to have some fun and enjoy a three course dinner. The awards ceremony began with opening remarks by Emcee Mark Farrar. Officers, the Board of Directors and the Youth Council were all acknowledged and thanked for their active involvement and service to the Tennessee Walking Horse industry. Following the opening remarks, emcee Mark Farrar thanked several organizations which consistently contribute to the effort that makes the Tennessee Walking Horse such a great breed. The entities recognized include Celebration Inc., TWHBEA, SHOW Inc, and Walking Horse Owners Association. Jeffery Howard and the Walking Horse Report were thanked for serving as the official publication of the WHTA. The Scoop Walking Horse publication and the Voice Magazine were thanked for their continued coverage, with gratitude expressed to What A Horse for their support. A special emphasis was placed on the importance of advertising and promotion of the breed. The Youth High Point winners in the Youth Park Pleasure division was Zachary Sapp with reserve going to Lindsey Landrum. Performance 11 years and under winner was Taylor Strickler with Will Derickson receiving reserve. The Youth 12-17 years age group performance award was given to Lilly Waites with Meghan Davis being rewarded second. The Lite Shod winner was Allison Thorson with Mackenzie Morgan following in second place.
Brock Tillman, Sue Ann and Jo Ann Dowell recognize Allison Becknell and others for being chosen the Dowell/Trainers Association Scholarship recipients.
The Trainers Association and the Dowell Family acknowledged the 2012 Scholarship winners: Allison Leigh Becknell, McKenzie Angelyn GowerHammack, Lindsey Sloan Landrum, Jessica Lynne Popp, Austin Parker Rhoads, Lauren Ashley Shelton, Monica Maurine Thompson, Alexander Spiller Way and Taylor Willis. The scholarships were made possible by the generous donation of the Glenn C. Dowell, Jr. family. In 2013, the Dowell family plans to double their scholarship donation. The Riders Cup awards were presented in each division. This year’s winners were Admission Is A Dollar, The Thug, Jane’s Silver Lining, Dangerous Dillinger, Charmer’s Caretaker, Command On Parole, Those Fancy Leg, Siege, Main Sweetie, Jazz Talkin, Chillin’ The Most, The Colonel Reb, Hello Dollar, GiGi’s Jamaican Generator, BB King’s Jazz and Double Shot of Cash.

2012 Walking Horse Trainer’s Association Annual Meeting and Banquet This year, Tim Smith was named 2012 Trainer of the Year. Tim trains for David Landrum Stables of Franklin, TN. Marsha’s on the Square, presented Tim with a new riding habit as his award. The 2012 Assistant Trainer of the Year was presented to Clay Sanderson of Phillip Trimble Stables. The One Night Show Winner for 2012 was presented to the Money Tree Classic. Reserve went to Woodbury Lions Club. The Multi-Night show of the year was the North Carolina Championship show in Asheville, NC. The Mississippi Charity Horse Show in Jackson, Mississippi followed was a strong second place. The announcement of the newest members of the Friendship Club was another highlight of the evening. Randall and Sadie Baskin, Dr. John Bennett, Mark Farrar, Jack Moorman, Buddy Stasney and Bruce Vaughn make up the new inductees to this prestigious club.
Susan Coleman, Sarah Smith, Margueritte Thomas, and Lynn Womack were excited to accept the One Night Show of the Year award for the Money Tree Classic from Whitlei Green.
This exciting night of awards and recognition was followed by music from a live band. Some danced, some simply partied until the wee hours of the morning. The Scoop was honored to be a part of the festivities and would like to congratulate each and every winner for their successes and achievements. We wish everyone the best of luck in the 2013 show season!

Parents are Terry & Ashley Thomas Jennings. Ron Thomas is the proud grandfather. Both mother and son are doing well. obituary - Herbert McJunkin Herbert Henry McJunkin, age 81, of Dallas, TX, passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2012 in Dallas, TX. He was born on February 10, 1931 in Dallas, TX USA to his parents, Mr. Herbert McJunkn Sr. and Mrs. Marguerite Jones. Herbert married Katherine Hopkins in Livermore, CA on August 2, 1955. They had 3 children. Herb graduated Highland Park High School in 1949 then attended Texas A&M and SMU, where he played football while completing his undergraduate and Masters Degrees in Geology. He served in the United States Air Force playing football and flying photo reconnaissance over Korea. After a few years in the oil and home building business, he founded Dal-Mac Construction and later Dal-Mac Development which together remained in business for over 48 years. His professional and civic duties included serving as a board member for Citizens State Bank of Richardson Texas, board member and past president of Richardson Chamber of Commerce, founding member for North Texas Commission (Richardson), board member for Association of General Contractors, Texas Health Presbyterian Plano board of directors, board member for Circle 10 Boy Scouts of America, He was past president for Big D Charity Horse Show, and served on various fundraising committees for Equest Hospitals and Universities, Mr McJunkin was also a founding member of Spring Valley Athletic Association, member and past president of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, past chairman of Byron Nelson Golf Classic. Herb wanted it known that he did not want to be remembered for his accomplishments and rewards, but to remember him for his service in the building and improvement of the local communities where he lived and conducted his business. Herb will be remembered by his loving wife and their children, son, Brad McJunkin and wife, Deborah, son Kirk McJunkin and wife, Cathy; daughter, Ellen Sale, six granddaughters, Kelly, Morgan, Grace Ann, Jena, Martha, Kate, and Keely. Three grandsons, Blake, Bert, and Herbert, one great-grandson, Isaiah, and a brother Jack McJunkin. He was preceded in death by Mary and Herbert McJunkin and Marguerite and Cecil Swindler. The family wishes to thank Laura Spurger R.N. and Community Hospice for their tireless and loving service. A memorial service was held for Herbert at 2:00 pm on Monday, December 10, 2012 at Highland Park United Methodist Church. The family received guests immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. The family requests memorials to the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, UT Southwestern, Community Hospice, or Highland Park United Methodist Church.
neWS FroM tHe celebration The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration will add a five-year-old amateur division to all of its shows in the 2013 season. The new class will be a specialty class and will be in addition to the Amateur Specialty division and Amateur Canter division. In addition the age restriction of five years and over in the Amateur Canter division will be removed eliminating the age requirement to compete in that class. All of these divisions will have the traditional mare and gelding division and stallion division in the preliminaries.

The Scoop For The Walking Horse industry 2013 TWHBEA ExEcuTivE commiTTEE At the meeting held Saturday, December 1, 2012, the International Board of Directors of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ And Exhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA) elected the following people to serve on the 2013 Executive Committee: President Tracy Boyd (TN) - Tracy is a lifelong Tennessee Walking Horse enthusiast and lifetime member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ And Exhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA). He has spent most of his professional career working in the industry, wearing many hats along the way. Tracy is a former horse trainer and is proud of his record of having had no HPA violations. In addition, he has spent time at two major breeding farms, most recently serving as the breeding manager for Rising Star Ranch. Perhaps his biggest industry contribution came during his seven-year tenure as TWHBEA’s executive assistant. Tracy is an AAAA- licensed judge and has officiated shows throughout the United States and Canada. He has previously served as Horse Shows Vice President at TWHBEA. Senior Vice President Loyd Hall “Buster” Black, Jr. (GA) - A practicing attorney since 1971, Buster has operated his own law firm since 1978. He is currently practicing regionally and nationally in equine law and equine regulation. He has been active in legislative matters related to the Tennessee Walking Horse industry. He is a former director of the Georgia Walking Horse Exhibitors’ Association and he recently completed a two and a half year term as Chairman of its Coalition of State Horse Councils. He has previously served three terms as Member At Large By Laws Vice President at the Association. He is a longtime walking horse enthusiast with plans to become a mounted search and rescue volunteer. Administrative/Fiscal/Audit Vice President Rob Cornelius (AL) - An accountant by trade, Rob brings a wealth of experience to the Executive Committee. He is a longtime walking horse enthusiast who enjoys just about every facet of the breed. He is a member of the Walking Horse Trainers’ Association and he has served the Walking Horse Association of Alabama as a Director and as President. Rob has also volunteered as a 4H youth leader and in several other community oriented positions. He is a multiple term Administrative/Fiscal/Audit Vice President for the Association. Breeders Vice President Mike Hicks (TN) - Mike Hicks has been actively involved in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry for the past 25 years. During this time he has owned broodmares, foals, pleasure and performance horses. Mike’s primary interest has been in breeding and raising foals. Raising his first foal in 1988 and not missing a year since, it has become a passion in his life. He has managed numerous World Champion and World Grand Champion stallions; he currently owns and operates New Horizon Stables in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He has previously served as Enforcement Vice President and Performance Horse Vice President for the Association. Enforcement Vice President Denise Bader-Keyser (Germany) - A native of Wemding, Germany, Denise Bader-Keyser has been involved in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry for over a decade. She has owned and exhibited pleasure, performance, halter and versatility horses and she is currently an owner/operator of a multi-faceted Tennessee Walking Horse facility in Germany. An extremely active promoter of the breed in Europe, she has participated in and/or organized Equitana Germany, the German Championships, Eurocheval, Fierra Cavalli Italy, Cavaladia Poland Americana, the European Futurity & Championship and the Northern German Championship. Equine Welfare Vice President Dr. Linda Montgomery (AL) - A practicing veterinarian for 23 years, Dr. Linda Montgomery enjoys all facets of the Tennessee Walking Horse. She is an owner, exhibitor, and breeder of flat shod, padded, halter, and versatility horses. She is a regular on the trail and in the show ring. This is her second term as a TWHBEA Director for Alabama and last year was her first time serving on the board of an industry organization. This will be her third term as TWHBEA’s Equine Welfare Vice President. Horse Show Vice President Pat Stout (TN) - Pat has been involved in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry for several years, beginning her involvement in Washington State and later relocating to Tennessee. She has owned and exhibited horses in every division our industry has to offer. She is also an active breeder. A multiple-term director, she has previously served as Horse Shows Vice President in 1999, 2000 and 2007. She has also served on the Pleasure Horse/ Youth Horse/Youth and Owners/ Exhibitors/ International committees. Other breed organizations that she has been active in include TWHBEA of Washington, Western International Walking Horse Association, Walking Horse Owners’ Association, Upper Cumberland Walking Horse Association and the Pleasure Walking Horse Association of Tennessee.
Member At Large Youth Vice President and this will be her third nonconsecutive term as Marketing Vice President. Over the years, she has served on the Breeders, Youth, Pleasure, Marketing, Administrative/Fiscal/Audit, and By Laws committees. Always looking to promote her breed of choice, Joyce has represented the breed at a variety of events. Joyce has operated a major accounting service for 37 years. Owners/Exhibitors/International Vice President Jason Bachert (MO) - A resident of Grover, Missouri, Jason is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University who holds a bachelors degree in Ag Business. He has been employed by Manna Pro Products LLC for the past 11 years and currently he currently serves as Vice President, Retail Sales. A lifetime member of TWHBEA, Jason has been involved in all facets of the breed. He and his family enjoy showing and trail riding. He has been instrumental in TWHBEA’s relationship with Manna Pro and he has never hesitated to lend a hand at TWHBEA events such as Equine Affaire and All Youth Day. Performance Horse Vice President Christy Lantis (CA) - The daughter of a professional field trial dog trainer, Christy grew up riding and owning Tennessee Walking Horses. She began showing at the age of 13 and rode her first performance horse under the direction of Russ Thompson. In addition to riding and showing, Christy enjoys breeding Tennessee Walking Horses. She has served as Secretary/Treasurer for the West Coast Walking Horse Trainers’ Association and as a director of the Tennessee Walking Horse Foundation. Christy is a former director for the Tennessee Walking Horse Association of California and the Hesperia Christian School Board. Professionally, Christy manages the Assessment Appeals and Special Properties divisions of the San Bernardino County Assessor/Clerk/Recorder. Pleasure Horse Vice President Rick Wies (MT) - Rick began training and showing the pleasure Walking Horse in the early 70’s mostly in open all breed shows while in his early twenties. He owned and operated a training and show barn in Fort Wayne, Indiana, while earning a mechanical engineering degree, serving in the Army Reserve as a Drill Sergeant in an infantry training unit, working full time as a tool and die designer and beginning a family. In 1984 Rick and family moved to the west shore of Flathead Lake in Montana to take on the management, training and showing duties for the Dr. Taylor ranch where a broodmare band of twenty plus was formed. In 1995 Rick purchased the Montana Ranch and reestablished Rick Wies Stables, which he operates to date. Rick has been elected to the TWHBEA International Board of Directors on five occasions and has actively served on virtually every divisional committee with over seventy appointments. Trainers Vice President Wayne Dean (TN) - A native of Paris, Tennessee, Wayne Dean has been around Tennessee Walking Horses for so long that he no longer remembers his first ride aboard one. His uncle, Master Breeder Audie Dean, introduced him to the breed. A professional walking horse trainer for 35 years, he is committed to promoting every facet of the Tennessee Walking Horse breed. In 2008 - 2009 he served as Performance Horse Vice President and in 2006 - 2007 and 2009 - 2012 he served as Trainers Vice President. He has held a seat on the Walking Horse Trainers’ Association Board of Directors since 1998. He has judged just about every major show including the Celebration. Member At Large ByLaws Dr. David Mullis, Jr. (GA) - A resident of Good Hope, Georgia, Dr. David Mullis, Jr. has been a member of TWHBEA since 1996. He is an owner, exhibitor and breeder of quality Tennessee Walking Horses that have found success in nearly every discipline. He is a supporter of all facets of the Tennessee Walking Horse. Dr. Mullis is the president of Mullis & Associates, Inc., a regulatory affairs and clinical studies consulting firm focusing on medical devices and biotechnology. Member At Large Youth Caroline Hoffman (MO) - Caroline resides in Wellington, Missouri where she enjoys owning, exhibiting and training pleasure, performance and halter horses. She is a breeder of successful Tennessee Walking Horses and an avid trail rider. She is a multiple-term director for TWHBEA and she has served on the Performance Horse, Youth, Horse Show and Pleasure Horse committees. She has held youth camps and is an avid supporter of TWHBEA’s Academy Program. Caroline has served as president of the Tennessee Walking Horse Association of Missouri. Secretary Dee Dee Miller (TN) - A lifelong Tennessee Walking Horse enthusiast, Dee Dee brings a wealth of knowledge to the Executive Committee. She is a multiple term TWHBEA director from Tennessee who served in 2008, 2009 and 2012 as Breeders Vice President for the Association. She is also a former Member At Large Youth and Senior Vice President. She has served as Secretary/Treasurer for the Tennessee Walking Horse Foundation. Dee Dee is a licensed AAA judge and is, perhaps, best known as the owner of 1998 World Grand Champion Masquerading.
Marketing Vice President Joyce Moyer (OH) - Involved in virtually all aspects of the breed, Joyce Moyer has been a member of TWHBEA since 1988 and lifetime member of TWHBEA since 1998. Included in his motion was the idea to name the committee Micah Care in honor of Micah Bialy, a Tennessee Walking Horse Youth Association member who recently lost his battle with cancer. The motion carried unanimously. At the International Board of Directors Meeting, held December 1, 2012, it was announced that the Tennessee Walking Horse Foundation would be taking donations for Micah Care. THE CALVARY COMES TO SHELBYVILLE On Saturday, December 8 at 2 pm, the Cavalry Group hosted a meeting at the Tennessee Walking Horse Trainers Association building. The focus of the meeting was to educate those interested in learning about our rights as animal owners and agriculturists. Mindy Patterson, president and co-founder of the group presided over the well attended meeting, explaining the function of the organization and answering questions regarding the involvement of the government and the HSUS in the Tennessee Walking Horse Industry. For those unable to attend the meeting, following are Mindy’s bio and a brief synopsis of some of the points discussed at the meeting. Mindy Patterson is the president and co-founder of The Cavalry Group LLC, a national leader in protecting and defending the Constitutional and private property rights of law abiding animal owners and animal-related businesses legally and legislatively nationwide. Working with national animal groups, animal agriculture associations and animal related businesses, Mindy leads the charge in defending against the onslaught of anti-private property and antiagriculture animal rights activism in addition to challenging the infiltration of animal rights activism in government at the local, state and federal levels. Her firm, The Cavalry Group, is engaged on multiple fronts including deterring illegal search and seizure of private property and ensuring due process as outlined in the United States Constitution, challenging the Humane Society of the United States’ (HSUS) efforts to abuse the state referendum process, and working with our public policy advisors, Olsson, Frank & Weeda at the federal level to ensure that The Cavalry Group’s members’ interests are protected and served in Congress. On the state referendum front, Mindy recently directed the The Alliance for Truth Campaign in defeating the HSUS’ effort to install “direct democracy” in Missouri through the referendum process. Prior, Mindy had organized and managed the opposing effort to the HSUS directed and funded 2010 “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act” (Missouri Proposition B).

While we lost by a very narrow margin of less than two percent after a hard fought battle, and the measure later went on to be changed in the Missouri state legislature, the fight against HSUS changed my outlook on many things. Having witnessed first hand the power of the bully tactics and propaganda of the Humane Society of the United States, which threatened the livelihoods and private property of hardworking people who happen to make their living raising puppies was shocking to me. Even more disheartening are the challenges which ALL animal enterprises across America face from over reaching state and federal government agencies, whose blatant and outrageous attacks on our private property and individual Constitutional rights, incrementally chip away at our right to own animals. While I do believe that Americans are slowly waking up to the real intentions of the animal rights movement, far too many people who make their living with animals struggle daily with the fear of government intrusion motivated by the animal rights agenda which further regulates farmers, livestock producers, and domesticated animal breeders out of business. With all this in mind, I co-founded The Cavalry Group to protect American citizens against violations of their Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment rights as found in the United States Constitution. These violations manifest as false accusations of animal abuse and the subsequent illegal search and seizure of private property. The Cavalry Group provides its members access to legal defense against such actions, while working on a national level to defeat the radical animal rights agenda through public relations, media consulting and federal lobbying. As a private company staffed with experts in the fight against the animal rights agenda, we have the expertise and capability to act as a surrogate for animal owners, associations, and animal related industries to address the challenges that they face from radical extremists and intrusive government. TWHBEA Holds Year End Meetings

General Membership Meeting The 2012 edition of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ And Exhibitors’ Association Annual General Membership Meeting was held on Friday, November 30, at Association headquarters in Lewisburg, Tennessee. This year the decision was made to forgo formal individual reports from the vice presidents in order to allow ample time for member questions and comments. Following the approval of the agenda, the approval of the minutes from the December 3, 2011 General Membership Meeting, brief welcoming comments from President Marty Irby and Senior Vice President Margo Urad, and the presentation of the results from the Board of Directors election, the floor was opened up for old business, new business and member comments. Under old business Director from Oklahoma Cris Van Horn presented a potential breed standard for the members to review. Later in the meeting a motion was passed unanimously to send the proposed breed standard to the Enforcement Committee for review. Denise Rowland, member from Tennessee, expressed her dismay at the decision to forgo the formal vice president reports. This resulted in a motion being passed to have each vice president present a three-minute report. These reports were condensed versions of the full reports detailed in the coverage of the International Board of Directors Semi-Annual Meeting later in this article. Other issues addressed under old business included the need to address travel reimbursement for officers and directors and the potential re-write of the TWHBEA by laws. Moving on to New Business, Member At Large Youth Linda Starnes informed those assembled that every TWHBEA member can join the Kentucky Horse Council for free. Member from Tennessee Nathanael Jackson made a motion to establish the Micah-Care committee, a hospitality committee charged with helping TWHBEA members in need and named in honor of Micah Bailey, a TWHBEA youth member who recently lost his battle with cancer. The motion carried unanimously and donations for Micah-Care can now be made to the Tennessee Walking Horse Foundation. Returning to the topic of the proposed breed standard, Member At Large By Laws Loyd Hall ‘Buster’ Black, Jr., requested that, for clarity’s sake, it be referred to as a breed ideal instead of standard. On the same topic Director from Illinois Dee Hasler pointed out that the original studbooks published by the Association included a breed description. Member from Tennessee Donna Benefield then addressed the meeting regarding the great responsibility held by the directors for the future of the breed. She reminded everyone that the Association was being closely scrutinized and that the time to end soring was now. She urged the directors to use their minds and consciences when deciding their votes for the Executive Committee. Sheryl Crawford, member from Georgia, then remarked that she had never seen more reform in the industry than she has in the last three years. She asked that everyone work to promote the positives that are happening within the breed. Adding his thoughts, member from Tennessee Nathanael Jackson reminded everyone that the problem of soring has been around for several decades and that, while there has been progress, the final changes that need to be made will be the most difficult to implement. He asserted that the breed will survive even if pads and action devices are lost. Returning to the podium, member from Tennessee Denise Rowland made a series of motions. The first was to request that the International Board of Directors amend their method of voting in the interest of transparency so that all votes cast by the Board at the International Board of Directors Meeting be made verbally and be recorded individually in the meeting minutes to be made available to any member in good standing within 30 days. This motion failed 32 to 43. The second motion sought to make it a requirement that all directors attend the General Membership Meeting. Member At Large By Laws Loyd Hall ‘Buster’ Black, Jr., determined that this issue would have to be addressed as a by laws amendment. Rowland’s third motion initially covered two topics - requiring all board members to sign and have notarized the oath of office and amending the oath of office to require signees to support and positively promote every division and use of the Tennessee Walking Horse and to give due consideration to the minority in matters requiring a vote. Upon review by the parliamentarian, the motion was separated into two motions. The first of the two, to require each director to sign the oath of office and to have the signatures notarized carried 39 to 30. The second motion, to add the above specified wording to oath was determined to be invalid because the earlier amendment required directors to sign the current oath. In her final motion, Rowland moved to close the International Board of Directors meeting to everyone except members. It was determined by the parliamentarian that this issue could only be addressed by the International Board of Directors at their meeting. Following this series of motions, several members expressed their thoughts on the direction of the industry and the eradication of soring. Many praised the progress that has been made and many talked of the work yet to be done. Most agreed that it is not a padded versus pleasure issue, it is a whole breed issue that must be addressed in cooperation by everyone in the industry.
International Board of Directors Meeting The semi-annual meeting of the International Board of Directors of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ And Exhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA) was held Saturday, December 1, 2012. The meeting began with a call to order by President Marty Irby and the roll call by Secretary Alie Napier. Next up the newly elected directors were recognized and the oath of office was administered by President Irby. Following the approvals of the agenda, minutes from the May 26, 2012 International Board of Directors meeting and the 2012-2013 proposed budget, the standing committee reports began. Reporting first, Administrative/Fiscal/Audit Vice President Rob Cornelius explained that year to date, through October 31, the Association showed a negative balance of $6450 but it is anticipated that this will be a break even year for TWHBEA. He also reported Ron Thomas, Executive Di- that the Association’s reserves remain intact and that next year’s budget predicts a modest increase in revenue over expenses. Enforcement Vice President Christy Lantis reported that five complaints had been filed in 2012 of which two were filed improprector TWHBEA erly, one was determined to be invalid, one was withdrawn and one is ongoing. Turning to the rulebook she related that her committee had decided to used the 2006 TWHBEA rulebook as a template or starting point. She said that her committee was 70%-80% along the way to completing the new rulebook and that they were considering a breed standard. Equine Welfare Vice President Dr. Linda Montgomery focused her report on the need for donations for her committee’s efforts and the need for committee members in the midwest and northeast. Reporting next, Horse Show Vice President Tracy Boyd first discussed the National Futurity stating that the move that put it on the same weekend and in the same location as the World Versatility Show was motivated by a desire to create an event that would showcase every facet of the Tennessee Walking Horse. He said that the event was

To close out his report he talked about the International Highpoint Program and its potential going forward. Following Boyd’s report, Oklahoma director Cris Van Horn asked that TWHBEA explore naming its own World Grand Champions. Marketing Vice President Joyce Moyer began by making the point that everyone is a member of the Marketing Committee; that everyone markets the breed, either negatively or positively. She then gave a rundown of her committee’s various activities including the upcoming TWHBEA cookbook, partnership with Stolen Horse International, the Southeastern Trails Conference, Equine Agility, Best of America by Horseback and TTEC. Owners/Exhibitors/International Vice President Stephen Brown reported that the breed is growing in Europe and specifically thanked the Bader-Keyser family and Marianne Zyderfeld for their promotion efforts. He related that he had visited Portugal and Mexico to gauge interest in our breed. He also touched on the horse fair he attended in China, stating that the Tennessee Walking Horse and Quarter Horse were the only American breeds in attendance. He pointed out that the Tennessee Walking Horse booth was one of the most popular at the event. Performance Horse Vice President Mike Hicks reported that his committee was working on assembling information packets that include educational materials on the performance horse. He also discussed a potential economic survey and urged owners to get their trainers a TWHBEA membership for Christmas. To begin his report Pleasure Horse Vice President Rick Wies noted that the World Versatility Show continues to grow. The 2012 edition of the show boasted 557 entries up from only 250 entries three years ago. He then congratulated Tracy Pinson on her second Extreme Cowboy Race World Championship with Skyjacker’s Mountain High. He reported that there were five Adult Supreme Versatility Championships and one Youth Superior Versatility Championship awarded in 2012. In closing he stated that Equine Agility and Western Dressage were on track to be added to the Versatility program. Breeders Vice President Dee Dee Miller started her report by detailing her committee’s accomplishments over the past year including online registration and the Motivated Mares program. Touching on future projects she talked about the EyeD identification system, a program involving the Equine Welfare committee aimed at making it easier to register rescued Tennessee Walking Horses, possible family memberships, a restructuring of the Association’s fee schedule and the feasibility of putting pictures on registration papers. Member At Large By Laws Loyd Hall ‘Buster’ Black, Jr., began by announcing that a $13,000 line item for by laws amendments had been included in the 2012-2013 budget. He then turned to the by laws rewrite, which has been tackled by California Director Fran Cole, stating that the document produced by Fran for the meetings was merely a starting point or first draft. He said that his committee was approaching the rewrite with the philosophy that the by laws should move the Association forward and from the standpoint that the by laws committee should point out policy questions, not make policy decisions. In closing, he explained that the Whitfield amendment, which would ban pads and action devices, mentions the Tennessee Walking Horse but does not define the term Tennessee Walking Horse. He said that this fact meant that the integrity of the registry was more vital than ever before. Member At Large Youth Linda Starnes started by recognizing the outgoing Tennessee Walking Horse Youth Association officers and the various youth award winners. She then discussed her committee’s activities over the past year including the FAST Showcase, American Youth Horse Council, National Trails Day, Youth Camps, World Versatility Show, All Youth Day, 4-H Eastern Roundup and Just Say WHOA. She then urged everyone to share their horse with a youth and announced that the essay topic for 2013 would be “The Tennessee Walking Horse for me is....” In the final standing committee report of the day, Trainers Vice President Wayne Dean discussed the Academy and Certified Riding Instructor (CRI) Program. He related that his committee was exploring ways to increase participation in both programs and that two subcommittees were being formed - one comprised of representatives from the Trainers, Horse Show and Youth committees and one comprised of licensed CRIs. Following the standing committee reports President Irby said a few words about breed historian and advocate Sara Lynn Bledsoe, who recently passed away unexpectedly. It was then time for the election of officers. The unopposed candidates were elected by acclimation. Then each of the other candidates were allowed three minutes in which to talk to the directors before they voted. Once the directors had voted and the votes had been counted it was revealed that the TWHBEA Executive Committee would be comprised of President Tracy Boyd, Senior Vice President Loyd Hall ‘Buster’ Black, Jr., Administrative/Fiscal/Audit Vice President Rob Cornelius, Horse Shows Vice President Pat Stout, Trainers Vice President Wayne Dean, Breeders Vice President Mike Hicks, Pleasure Horse Vice President Rick Wies, Performance Horse Vice President Christy Lantis, Enforcement Vice President Denise Bader-Keyser, Equine Welfare Vice President Dr. Linda Montgomery, Marketing Vice President Joyce Moyer, Owners/Exhibitors/International Vice President Jason Bachert, Member At Large By Laws Dr. David Mullis, Member At Large Youth Caroline Hoffman and Secretary Dee Dee Miller. Following the election, newly elected President Tracy Boyd took over the podium to set the time and location of the next International Board of Directors meeting as May 25, 2012 at Association headquarters in Lewisburg, Tennessee. He then opened the floor for Old Business. Under Old Business Joyce Moyer and Dr. Linda Montgomery discussed the Walkers for Wounded Warriors program and encouraged everyone to consider participating. Moyer also asked Julie Dillon to speak about her experiences competing in Dressage in the northeast. Dillon related that her horse was usually the only gaited horse at the competitions and that she had earned several top honors. She also stated that she and others were working with the United States Dressage Federation to create educational opportunities for gaited horse owners. Moving on to New Business, Mike Hicks motioned to establish an economic impact survey to be sent to the Association’s membership. The survey is to be compiled by January 15, 2013, and returned by March 1, 2013. The motion carried unanimously. President Boyd then announced that the Tennessee Walking Horse Foundation would be accepting donations for the new Micah Care program, which was introduced at the General Membership meeting. As there were no comments from the International Board, the meeting was adjourned.

November 30, 2012 was the date of the annual TWHBEA end of the year awards banquet. The banquet started promptly at 5:30 for cocktail hour with the awards presentation following at 6:30. Dinner on Friday night was held at the Cool Springs Marriott in Franklin, Tennessee. During the cocktail hour many people visited the silent auction room that the Walking Horse Trainers Association was hosting and they made their bids on items that they wanted to carry home! The Master of ceremonies was Mark Farrar. The meal was delicious and everyone enjoyed catching up with each other over a fun evening. The menu included sliced pork, potatoes, salad, green beans, rolls and a specialty cheese cake to finish the meal! Among the 2012 Executive Committee members attending the event were Wayne Dean, Tracy Boyd, Christy Lantis, Marty Irby, Margo Urad, Dee Dee Miller, Dr. Linda Montgomery, Joyce Moyer, Mike Hicks, Rick Wies, Stephen Brown, Linda Starns and Loyd Hall Black, Jr. These members were presented awards for their dedicated work. The past president, Marty Irby was very pleased to welcome new president Tracy Boyd. In addition, Marty was presented a special award for a job well done serving TWHBEA. Both Marty and Tracy presented awards during the evening with the help of Dee Dee Miller and Paulette Ewing. Senator Robin Webb spoke to the crowd and presented TWHBEA Executive Director, Ron Thomas and former TWHBEA president, Marty Irby with certificates for their dedication and contributions to the state of Kentucky. The awards began with noting sponsors for the year and recognizing the Board of Directors. Several special awards were given and they were as follows: Walk Time Charlie was presented the 2012 World Grand Champion award for owners Holland, Kilgore and Callicutt. John and Ann Callicutt made the trip from North Carolina to claim the award for their prized stallion. Victory Trip was presented the overall Show High Point Champion at this year’s TWHBEA’s World Versatility Show with owner Linda Starnes. TWHBEA member Dee Dee Miller was proud to present Linda with this honor. The 2012 National Futurity, The Regional Futurity Premier Sires and Dams of the Year, The Go Gelding Program, Super Motivated Mare and The Distance Program award was presented to the horses that had accumulated the most points for the season. The Senior Pleasure Horse division was won by My Courtney J owned by Barrett Jones. Linda Starnes assisted in presenting the awards to the youth award winners. The TWHYA Members voted Shannon McCaffrey as the Lizzie Umberger Sportsmanship award winner and the TWHYA Youth Member of the year was Shelby Finch. The Youth Ambassador of the Year was Larry Lowman, The Performance Ambassador Award winner was Senator Robin Webb. The Pleasure Horse Ambassador was Sherrie Szucs for 2012. Ernie Brewbaker was awarded the TWHBEA Friendship Award, Sheryl Crawford was given the Reese L. Smith, Jr. Award and the TWHBEA member of the year was awarded to Frank Neal. 2012 Master Breeder Award winner s were Paige Edwards, the late Hoyte Eakes, the late Betty Freeman, the late Larry Gribble and the late Burt Hunter.

Upper Cumberland Awards Banquet COOKEVILLE, TN – The Upper Cumberland Walking Horse Association Annual Youth and Adult Awards banquet was held December 8, 2012 at the Willow Place Conference Center in Cookeville, TN. UCWHA President, Rick Clendenon, began the banquet with a recap of the activities that the club had been involved with throughout 2012. Two scholarships for $500 each were presented to Aaryn Tarver and Annette England. Jerry Swallows announced the high point awards. Officers for 2013 are as follows: President – Jeff Slagle Vice President – Rod Slagle Secretary – Lesa Davidson Treasurer – Pat Stout The highlights of the evening included Too Hot being awarded the Youth Country Pleasure and Pleasure Horse of the Year awards. This horse was directed by Matasia Goodwin in this division for owner Hayley Wisehart. Performance Horse of the Year was awarded to Cassi Slagle. Vegas Folly, directed by Elly Stamper and owned by Allison Stamper, claimed the Youth 11 & Under Performance award. Additionally, Tickle Me Pink was recognized for a great year and was the recipient of the Youth 12-17 year performance division. This horse was ridden by Cassi Slagle throughout the season and is owned by Cassi Slagle. Other award recipients included Doc Pearl, winner of the Yearlings award for owner Ella Kline. Siege, ridden by Scott Beaty was the recipient of the Four Year Old Open award for owner Fred Allred. Pam Sports Edition won first place in the Ladies Amateur Specialty and 15.2 & Under Open & Amateur divisions for owner Pam Hunt. Additionally, the Sportsmanship Youth award was awarded to Cassi Slagle. Jerry Swallows was awarded the Sportsmanship Adult award. The 2012 High Point Trainer award went to Franklin Beaty.
Barron and Karen Witherspoon, accompanied by Scott Beaty were thrilled to win the Walking Horse Stake open division.
After the awards were handed out to the lucky recipients, Rick Clendenon’s band took over and the dance floor came alive.
