Chad Baucom 2012 Trainer of the Year for NC... Photos courtesy of Sandra Hall Photography GREENSBORO, NC- The North Carolina Walking Horse Association is one of the largest in the industry with a membership of approximately 500. Their Annual Awards Banquet was held Saturday, January 18, 2013 at the Embassy Suites in Greensboro, NC. The Scoop’s Publisher, Jacquelyn Elliott, attended the event to capture the winning candid moments. Sandra Hall of Sandra Hall photography was the official photographer for the evening. She graciously photographed presentations and provided pictures for the publication as a courtesy. The cocktail hour kicked off the banquet at 5 PM with everyone in a festive mood. Dinner was served promptly at 6 PM and it was delicious! Chicken, mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables followed a fresh green salad and topped off with a fabulous carrot cake for dessert.. The bidding at the silent auction held during the banquet was fiercely competitive for the calendar pages and other donated items. The four covers of the calendar were auctioned live as everyone began their meals. Thousands of dollars were dispersed in awards and prizes, and several members received their TIP checks. Many professional trainers as well as amateur riders accepted checks for their successful show season.
Chad Baucom 2012 Trainer of The Year award.
The Trainer of the Year award was presented to Chad Baucom, a very deserving trainer. Chad is admired not only for his talent with horses but also for his friendship. He is well respected for his expertise in putting talented horses in the ring in open as well as amateur divisions. This fitting award could not have come at a more perfect time, following Chad’s recent win for the state of North Carolina, on the 2012 World Grand Champion, Walk Time Charlie. 2012 was not the first year that Chad has been selected as trainer of the year for the state of North Carolina. North Carolina owned horses dominated at the 2012 Celebration. Numerous World Champions and Reserve World Champions accepted a special award at the beginning of the ceremony. Walk Time Charlie was also recognized for his World Grand Championship win. The Walking Stake High Point Award went to Watts Zone and David Polk. This team had a blue ribbon season in North Carolina. The Performance Horse of the Year was Vegas Ritz with owner and rider Julia Livingston. The Trail Pleasure Horse of the Year was Princess Power by Gold Power and owned by Terri Smith. It came as no surprise that the Lite Shod Horse of the Year was Little Dumas owned by C.B. and Linda Daughtridge. Little Dumas is trained by Keith Bryant Stables. Ritz Carlton, owned by Kristen McWilliams and James and Dawn Payne was the Park Performance Horse for 2012. Miss Cheyenne, owned by Gordon and Angelyn Ezzell was named the Plantation Horse of the year. The membership of the NCWHA votes for the Junior and Senior Horseperson Awards each year. One of the pleasures of watching our young people show is the opportunity to watch them develop and improve in their horsemanship skills. This year the Junior Horseperson honoree is a young individual who has just begun a show ring career. This individual entered the show ring on several different mounts and competed in more than one division. She culminated her show season with an 11 and Under Championship win at the NCCWHS aboard her new World Champion Mount, Jose’s Delightful Pusher. Following in her mother’s footsteps with her love of horses and a big smile, our Junior Horseperson Award for 2012 is presented to Miss Lilly Riddley. This year’s Senior Horseperson has been attending horse shows for many years. Page 12 / The Scoop
Lilly Ridley 2012 Youth Horse Person of the Year.
Ann Callicutt 2012 SENIOR HORSE PERSON.
While you may not often see this person in the show ring, you will know that she has participated when you hear her number called out in the top ribbons. While she shared her mount this year with her husband and father-in-law, she capped off her show season with a win at the SCWHA Championship. When not in the show ring, you will always find this rider in the background, cheering on her husband, son, and friends. One of the most pleasant people on the NC show circuit, the 2012 Senior Horseperson award is presented to Mrs. Anne Callicutt. The NCWHA is fortunate to have a number of people who contribute time and financial support to further the promotion of the Tennessee Walking Horse. The ability to continue to hold the events that have become established as the forte of this association depend upon support from our membership and corporate sponsors. We have received tremendous financial support for the past 10 years from Buddy Stasney and Stasney’s Buick, GMC Truck in Lincolnton NC. Without the support of this corporate sponsor, our championship show could not have become one of the premier fall events for the Tennessee Walking Horse. At this time, we would like to recognize Buddy Stasney and Stasney’s Buick, GMC Truck in Lincolnton, NC. This year the best One Night Show is not a newcomer to the award. The NCWHA has always excluded the shows put on by our Board of Directors from this voting category and we have many quality one night shows. year. Orchestrated by a group of ladies who work very hard to promote the Tennessee Walking Horse, Repeating last years win, the best One-Night Horse Show for 2012 is the NC Ladies Auxiliary Show. The best Multi-Night Show award goes to a group of individuals who strive to put on a quality show. Changing their date this year may have helped with participation. The best Multi-Night Show award winner goes to our sister organization – the South Carolina Walking Horse Championship in Clemson, SC.
Rufus Dale receiving the Ed Hubbard Sportsmanship award. The Johnny Dysart Award was established to honor a member who contributes to the overall operation of the association on a regular basis and who exemplifies the characteristics that were important to Johnny Dysart. This year, the Walking Horse industry has faced many significant challenges and issues. While most of us concentrated on trying to continue to enjoy and exhibit our wonderful horse, some of our members stepped up to serve on national committees and to work towards securing a brighter future for the industry. This person l devoted his personal time and resources to meet with our state legislators, served on the Board of TWSHO, and kept the NCWHA Board of Directors updated on industry happenings. He has given countless hours to the industry because his daughter loves to show. The 2012 Johnny Dysart Award winner is Mr. Proctor Dean.
The Kenny Price Memorial Sportsmanship Award was established by Ed and Dorothy Hubbard in 1981 to honor Mr. Kenny Price. The awarding of the trophy for 2001 retired the Kenny Price Memorial Sportsmanship Award. After his passing, the Sportsmanship Award was named for one of the founding members of the NCWHA, the late Edwin A. Hubbard. This year’s recipient of the Edwin A. Hubbard Sportsmanship award is being presented to one of the nicest people in our industry. He is not someone who tries to always be seen. He is unassuming, kind, respectful and many other adjectives that are often not used to describe folks in today’s world. He has not only been successful in the show ring, but is successful in his relationships with others in the Tennessee Walking Horse world. He always has a smile and a kind word for everyone at the show. A quiet individual, who is more often seen than heard , a person who always appreciates other’s accomplishments and is quick to congratulate them on their successes, but never boasts of his own accomplishments. A gentleman who is always a pleasure to see and because of his quiet and unassuming demeanor, it is often overlooked that this gentleman has for many, many years been a very competitive and successful exhibitor in the show ring. The 2012 Edwin A. Hubbard Memorial Sportsmanship award to Mr. Rufus Dale.
Proctor Dean the Johnny Dysart Member Award recipient. The NCWHA members may be very competitive in the show ring, but they had tons of fun dancing the night away and celebrating their accomplishments. I believe that the “Wobble” and “Rocky Top” were the two dances that topped the night. Next on the agenda is the Sneak Preview which will be held March 2, 2013.The Scoop is looking forward to meeting you at the gate. The Scoop is proud to represent North Carolina year after year and loves promoting your contenders and nothing is more rewarding than watching the state have such a successful year at the World Championship show. Best of luck to all of our Carolina customers and friends throughout the 2013 show season. The Scoop / Page 13

Breeding Tips It’s time for everyone to start gearing up for the 2012 show season, going through your closets figuring out what needs to be dry cleaned, getting out your boots and probably trying on your show pants to make sure the holidays haven’t done too much damage. As the season draws near, the colt previews and barn parties are making the exhibitors, owners and trainers even more excited about the upcoming year. While everyone is gathered around watching the great upcoming colts and fillies at the previews, we know the question is running through your head “maybe I should breed my mare to that stud”. He is really producing some nice colts this year. While deciding which stallion you want to breed to and which mare you want to cross him with, we wanted to provide you with a little helpful information that is always needed when breeding. The options for whom to breed your mare to are endless. Within our Industry, we have several breeding barns that stand multiple World Grand Champions to the smaller one stallion owners located across the country. Breeders today not only can offer performance horses, but pleasure horses too. Some of the breeding facilities have many options to offer the public such as: size, color, different pedigrees, even specialties such as homozygous, cremellos, buckskins and dapples with splashes of color that people love to make their trail mounts stand out. Deciding who to breed to and which mare is always your first step, but the second most important step is when to breed. Included in this article is the Gestation Cycle of mares, so hopefully it will help you pinpoint the perfect date to fit your breeding guidelines. If you’re a mare owner and know that timing will conflict with your plans, you can always look into farms or vets that offer mare care for foaling. This is a very common accommodation that is offered among our Industry.
Gestation
• The gestation period in horses is approximately 11 months or 340 days. Unlike many animals that give birth relatively close to their due dates, in horses, the gestation period is only a guideline and they may give birth as early as 315 days or as late as 370 and still be considered normal.
Determination
• The most exciting stage in your mare’s pregnancy is the anticipation of learning whether the breeding resulted in a pregnant mare. A mare retains hormones from her estral cycle for weeks, a urine test for pregnancy is unreliable during the first few months. Veterinarians may perform a urine or blood test between 60 days and 100 day. Your mare can have an ultrasound performed that will confirm a pregnancy within four weeks.
Early Term
• You will not see noticeable physical changes the first 100 days of your mare’s pregnancy. The foal is still undergoing rapid development. 30 weeks into gestation, the foal embryo is about 1--inch long with tiny bumps that will develop into legs. The embryo is still very small at 60 days and is less than 3-inches long but has a definable body with legs and a tail. At 100 days, the foal is 7-inches long, its main features are now formed and hair is beginning to develop. Page 30 / The Scoop
Mid Term
• From 100 to 250 days, the mare enters the middle stage of her pregnancy. By the end of this period, the mare will show noticeable abdominal weight gain. The foal weighs 2 pounds and his extremities are fully formed, including tiny hoofs at 150 days. Now, the foal begins an increased growth rate. By 180 days, he weighs nearly 10 pounds. The foal is the size of a small lamb and he has whiskers and eyelids by the end of the Mid term.
Late Term
• After 250 days gestation, the foal continues to gain weight rapidly and his lungs develop. The mare will begin to experience additional changes. The mare’s udder will distend slightly and around 300 days and by 315 days, the udder may produce a sticky yellow discharge that will turn to milk within two weeks of foaling. The mare’s abdomen will also grow heavy and her vulva will relax and lengthen within a week of foaling.
Last Days
• By day 315, the mare’s owner should be prepared for foaling although it may not occur for as long as 55 more days. Observing the mare on a daily basis is always best. Within one week of birth, the foal will “drop,” settling lower in the mare’s belly. The final two weeks the mare’s hind end will relax and it will appear lower in proximity to her tail. The fun part is over, your baby is here and the paperwork begins! I have included information that the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors have listed on their website that I feel is important information you need to know. The information on how to register your horse, how to transfer ownership and how to do blood typing and DNA collecting is included and we hope you find it informative. How do I Register My Tennessee Walking Horse?
1. Application must be completed clearly in ink - lead pencil is not acceptable 2. Suggested names must be submitted. Spacing is required between words. Names cannot exceed 25 letters-including spaces and marks of punctuation. (See Rule 1.04) 3. Foal date is necessary for submitting an application 4. Signatures of the stallion owner of record at the time of service and the mare owner of record at the time of foaling are required for submission of application 5. Stallion Breeding report number must be included. If mare is not on breeding report and the report was filed in a timely fashion, a $10.00 fee is required for her to be added to the report. 6. Description must be completed. If animal is a tobiano, sabino, overo, overo/sabino, pictures are required-front, back and both sides. 7. If foal is to be registered to a person other than the owner of the mare at foaling time, a transfer is required. The transfer must be signed by the mare owner at foaling time, with a date of purchase . There will be a fee due for both the registration and the transfer. Fee for registration is determined by the membership status of the mare owner at time of foaling. 8. Parentage verification kits will not be issued without submission of a completed in order application. 9. Parentage verification kits will bear the registered name and number of the animal to which it has been assigned. DO NOT USE THE KIT FOR ANOTHER ANIMAL. IF AN UNUSED KIT IS RETURNED TO TWHBEA, A REFUND WILL BE MADE. 10. INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING THE BLOOD OR PULLING
HAIR SAMPLES FOR SHIPMENT ARE INCLUDED WITH EACH KIT-PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. DO NOT SEND SAMPLE TO TWHBEA. 11. Processing of sample by the laboratory could take from 10 days - 2 weeks from the time of receipt. 12. Upon receipt of results from the laboratory certificate of registration will be sent to the owner. 13. Gelding Registration Incentive: Registration fee will be $40.00 for members and $100.00 for non members until the animal is 36 months of age; After 36 months the fee will increase to $100.00 for members and $160.00 for non-members; Parent age verification kit fees and transfer fees will be additional; Statement from the veterinarian or person performing the castration must accompany the application for registration, and no foals will be registered from the gelding without exceptions; All registration requirements must be met.
Transferal of Ownership
Reasons to Execute a Transfer Promptly: 1. Accurately reflects “Ownership Of Record” in official files. 2. Reduces liability of previous owner with regard to legal actions (such as USDA and other civil and criminal actions.) 3. Enables current owner to have the horse(s) automatically entered in official show records (which is done only when the owner of record in the TWHBEA files corresponds with the owner listed on the horse show entry form.) 4. Reduces additional expense in transfer and registration fees. 5. It’s required by TWHBEA rules! How to effect a transfer of ownership: • Appropriate block on back of certificate must be signed by seller(s). • Transfer of ownership form must be signed by seller(s) - If mare has been bred, lower portion of form must be completed breeding date, signature of owner of stallion and mare at time of service. • Name and registration number of animal being transferred must be filled in.* • Complete date of purchase. • Signed certificate and transfer form (white copy) must be returned to TWHBEA. • Enclose proper fee and mail to TWHBEA, P. O. Box 286, Lewisburg, TN 37091. • Buyer does not have to sign transfer form unless the form is to be used as a bill of sale. * If animal being transferred is being registered at the time of transfer and the name has not been selected nor the number issued, fill in the year of foaling and the registration number of the dam.
Blood Typing / DNA DNA CONVERSION Beginning January 1, 2007, TWHBEA began requiring the all foals be parentage verified through DNA. In order for parentage verification to be accomplished through DNA, it is necessary that the sire and dam both be DNAed. TWHBEA must have a request for the conversion of the stored blood samples (click here for form) at a fee of $25.00 each. This conversion request for the sire and dam can be made at the time application for registration if a foal is submitted. If the stored sample is not viable or if there is no stored sample a red top tube of blood will be required for 2 reasons: 1) to verify that the sample is from the same horse as originally tested, and 2) to extract the DNA. Upon receipt of a completed in order application for registration of a foal TWHBEA will issue a hair sample kit that will contain a sheet of paper with instructions for the collection of the hair sample, and a self-addressed envelope to the University of Kentucky laboratory. If the sire and dam samples have not been converted you will experience a delay in receiving your completed certificate of registration for the foal until such time as both parents have been converted. We do encourage everyone to request the conversion of their breeding stock before applications for foals are submitted, however, do not let the fact that they have not been converted cause you to miss an impor-
tant fee deadline. Please remember this is a new process and all of the processing is now being done by one laboratory. Please note that the hair kit is designed for the horse whose name and number are listed on the collection sheet, and only 1 sample should be mailed in the accompanying envelop. DO NOT USE KIT FOR ANY ANIMAL OTHER THAN THE ONE SPECIFIED. Please follow instructions provided on the back of the collections sheet. We know that this is new to most everyone, and that there are many situations that can arise, however, we welcome any questions that you may have regarding DNA. If the staff does not have an answer to your questions, we will certainly do everything we can to acquire an answer for you. We value your suggestions and your thoughts regarding this very important program which is being used to help maintain the integrity of our great breed. For more information please call 931-3591574. Forms for requesting the conversion of horses already blood typed can be found here. Blood Typing Blood kits will be issued once a completed, in order application has been submitted to the association. Blood kits will bear the registered name and number of the animal to which it has been assigned. DO NOT USE FOR ANOTHER ANIMAL. IF UNUSED KIT IS RETURNED TO TWHBEA, A REFUND WILL BE MADE. INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING THE BLOOD FOR SHIPMENT ARE INCLUDED WITH EACH KIT-PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. YELLOW COPY OF APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION MUST BE RETURNED WITH BLOOD SAMPLE TO THE LAB. DO NOT SEND SAMPLE TO TWHBEA. Processing of blood sample by the laboratory could take from 4-6 weeks from the time of receipt of sample. Upon receipt of results from the laboratory, a certificate of registration will be sent to the owner. See Rule 6 of the corporation bylaws for more information. Microchips Microchips are available at TWHBEA. The cost at registration is $10 for members, $70 for non-members. You must request and send payment with the registration application. The cost for previously bloodtyped horses is $16. This includes chip and a re-test blood kit. For more info about microchips, contact TWHBEA at 931-359-1574. Color Gene Testing Testing can be done using blood samples submitted for blood typing. A fee of $35 for each test should be sent directly to the University of Kentucky Lab. Tests Available: • Tobiano homozygosity • Agouti (black) • Chestnut • Cream (cremello/buckskin) • Lethal White Overo • Champagne • Gray • Sabino • Silver Dapple For more info about color gene testing, visit University of Kentucky online or call 859-257-4757 ext. 81150. You may also call TWHBEA at 931-359-1574 or visit www.twhbea.com. The 26th Annual Mid-South Banquet Was A Huge Success In 2012! JACKSON, TN – The 26th Annual Mid-South Walking Horse Association Awards Banquet was held on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at the Carl Grant Event Center at Union University. President Howard Hamilton welcomed guests once again to the MSHSA Banquet. The social hour began with lots of laughter, cocktails and an array of delicious homemade h’orderves. Once we were seated, a local comedian, Kevin Hamilton, kept us all in stitches with his witty personality. Board of Director Barry Carter was called to the podium to give a moment of silence for the four members who had passed away during the year. Mike Inman, CEO of the Celebration, invited board members to have a positive attitude and try to help promote the performance horse. He reiterated that if we do this, the Tennessee Walking Horse will not let us down. He asked that if anyone has any questions about our “horse” to please call upon him and he would be more than willing to answer any questions we might have. Mr. Inman mentioned that the Celebration was starting a new class for 2013 called the 5 Year Old Amateur Division. He highly suggested that the show managers for the up and coming shows offer this new division at their shows. The Mid-South Horse Show Association donated all proceeds from its show season to Youth Town which is an organization for troubled young folks. Mr. Mike Roby, Director of Development of Youth Town was in attendance to thank all members of the association for their generous contribution of $11,400 that was raised at the Mid-South horse show held in July 2012.
Fog At The Ritz and Abbey Fleming won the Park Pleasure Specialty High Point Award for owner Jim & Betty Upchurch.
Board members held a brief meeting and it was decided to elect three new members to serve for a three year term. They are Ed Cotter, Jim Roberts and Deborah Woods. Next the High Point Awards were presented. Abernathy Stables took home the highest number of awards for points won during the year. Southern Serenity Ranch came in second and the Wright Stables came in third. The training barn with the highest points of the year was the Abernathy Stables. THE SCOOP wishes to congratulate all winners for the 2012 Show Season and best of luck in 2013!

A highly competitive and successful team in Lite Shod English and Western Open and Amateur Owned and Trained, And Model, they graced countless publications with their style and beauty. Amy wishes to thank replica’s veterinarian, Dr. Jim Baum, his farrier, Jerry Lewis, and the many friends who helped her with him all these years-Scott Benham, Bobby Hugh, Blake Sims, Chad Williams, Grey Barker, Charlie green, Jeff Givens, Candy Green and Dr. Jim Bennett.

tracy boyd retraction Dear Scoop Subscribers, A few weeks ago I purchased a full-page advertisement in The Scoop to promote my candidacy for TWHBEA President. The version of ad that was published contained the official TWHBEA logo along the bottom of the page, which is clearly inappropriate. Although the inclusion of the logo was not directed by me personally, I take full responsibility for the ad and for the misuse of the logo. In addition, the table of contents listed TWHBEA as the advertiser, which is incorrect. In no way did TWHBEA endorse me as a candidate, nor was there any attempt by me to suggest as much. I regret the misuse of TWHBEA’s name and any confusion it may have caused. Sincerely, Tracy Boyd

Highlights of the results reveal that of those that responded 113 were owners and/or exhibitors of padded performance show horses while 230 were not. 280 were owners and/or exhibitors of flat shod show horses while 64 were not. 217 of those that responded were broodmare owners who raise foals. Of those 77 breed primarily for performance prospects, 74 breed primarily for flat shod show prospects and 85 breed primarily for trail/recreation prospects. When asked whether they completely oppose H.R. 6388 as written, 136 responded yes and 196 responded no. 142 respondents support a reduction in the size of the padded shoe worn by performance horses while 199 do not. Similarly, 145 favor total elimination of padded shoes in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry while 198 do not and 154 favor total elimination of the action device in the industry while 189 do not. Finally, 186
respondents support raising the Horse Protection Acts’s misdemeanor criminal penalties to felony level while 156 do not. TWHBEA would like to thank each and every member that responded to this important survey. Effective membership communication is one of the Association’s primary goals.
Tennessee Walking Horse Museum The Tennessee Walking Horse Museum was relocated to Wartrace in late 2010 and after many months of renovations and fund raising, they are officially open. They opened their doors in November 2012. The Museum does not receive financial support for operating purposes from any breed interest group, private individual or public agency. They depend on small admission fees and donations to pay the cost of keeping the doors open. They very much appreciate the donations that have been made to the Museum by individual within the industry. Over the past few years the industry has suffered due to bad publicity. This toll has affected the museum as well. The museum seeks your help to increase the awareness of the museum by sharing their story with your members and by making any donation you can to help them continue their mission and maintain and grow the museum in Wartrace, Tennessee which is known as the “Cradle of the Tennessee Walking Horse”. They are also asking for help with providing public access to documents and photographs which document the history of the breed. Please help us and use us as a tool to promote your business. The Tennessee Walking Horse Museum is located at 27 Main Street in Wartrace, Tennessee. Its hours of operation are Thursday thru Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Next time your in town take time to visit the Museum and support our Industry. Or you can make a donation by sending a check to TWHN Museum PO Box 572 27 Main Street Wartrace, TN 37183. NEWS
The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry An Update from TWSHO Happy New Year! The 2013 show season is just around the corner. Before we turn our attention to 2013 we wanted to take an opportunity to update the supporters of TWSHO’s accomplishments over the last several months. After a successful Celebration, TWSHO committed to pulling the industry together and has met several times with industry groups and associations presenting a plan to unite the industry around a unified inspection protocol. The plan has always been a draft plan and the details would be finalized by the new representative board, including members from TWHBEA, WHOA, WHTA, TWHNC and TWSHO along with independent veterinarians. The plan was developed after meetings with several nationally renowned veterinarians, state and national political leaders and public relation and affairs experts. The concept has not met the board approval of TWHBEA and WHOA, although both have voted to keep open the lines of communication. The WHTA and TWHNC have voted to accept the concept. The concept centers around the following goals: 1.One HIO; One Set of Rules; One Inspection Protocol led by independent veterinarians with regional representation 2.Elimination of soring by utilizing objective inspection methods in addition to the existing HPA requirements for inspection 3.Independent judging program centered around established breed standards 4.Socially acceptable gait and equipment At this point in time, the one HIO concept has not been achieved. It is our strong opinion this must be achieved in order to implement effectively the plan. It is important to note, the plan is for there to be one HIO that inspects both performance and pleasure horses, not a merger of those HIOs that don’t allow performance horses. Lawsuit The lawsuit is complete and awaiting a ruling from the Federal Judge in Fort Worth, Texas. The briefing on the case was extensive and far more than was anticipated. Many of the funds you donated were used to pay the fees to fight this vital case. The lawyers are confident in our arguments however until the judge rules we will not know. Either side can appeal the decision. A decision is expected within 90 days however there is no definitive timeline. Legislation The legislation to eliminate HIOs and all weighted shoes, pads and action devices introduced by Congressman Whitfield (KY) is no longer active. Congressman Whitfield will re-introduce the legislation, potentially with changes, in the new Congress in the coming months. In the meantime, Congressman Whitfield has met with industry representatives and is willing to listen to compromised Page 60 / The Scoop
legislation introduced by the industry. Currently, paid representatives from TWSHO are meeting to determine the best course of action and meeting with industry leadership to stay informed of developments in the industry. Our hope is to put together legislation that is acceptable and helps in the reforms of our industry. TWSHO has learned that any proposed legislation to eliminate soring in the industry will need to entail a unified HIO and inspection protocol. This has been one of the many factors influencing TWSHO to state so strongly its endorsement and mandate of one HIO. It is crucial at this point with Congressman Whitfield’s legislation being introduced again the next month or so that the industry remain as engaged as possible with members of Congress on both sides of the issue. For most members of Congress the only concept or understanding of the industry comes from the Humane Society (HSUS). Also, the industry must engage in a more constructive manner with APHIS and the Secretary of Agriculture. Everyone needs to understand that APHIS and the Department of Agriculture could move forward and implement a number of the sections of Congressman Whitfield’s legislation through the rulemaking process. That is why these discussions and interactions are so important. TWSHO finds itself in a position where it has done a tremendous amount of research and discovery to formulate the best suggestions to move forward. TWSHO urges and remains hopeful that those in positions of authority will consider the plan of action, tweak it to meet the objectives desired and implement a comprehensive plan to move the industry forward. We would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support, whether it be financial, volunteering time or lending a helping hand. Sincerely, TWSHO Board of Directors Proctor Dean, NC Terry Dotson, TN Frank Eichler, TN Nancy Groover, TX Bruce MacDonald, GA Lee McGartland, TX Duke Thorson, OH

SOUTH CAROLINA WALKING HORSE ASSOCIATION ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET Some things never change and in the case of the South Carolina Walking Horse Association, one thing that never changes is the caliber of the annual awards banquet. As always, the event was a thorough success reflecting all of the hard work and attention to detail that went into planning the evening. The 2012 banquet was hosted on January 12, 2013 at the Doubletree Hotel in Columbia. The annual event culminates the show season for the Tennessee Walking Horse. Owners, exhibitors and family enjoyed a fabulous buffet, complete with a decadent dessert table. Peggy Miles, a professional animal scientist, gave an informative presentation on equine nutrition. The Gamble family and the Overstreet family each headed for home with considerable amounts of silver. In addition to awards won by their horses, Eady Gamble was named Junior Horsewoman of the year and Kevin Overstreet was awarded Horseman of the Year. The South Carolina Walking Horse Ladies Auxiliary scholarship went to Nelson Gibbons to supplement his tuition at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC. Larry Brown was named SC Walking Horse Trainer of the year and Larry Kite was the 2012 inductee to the hall of fame. Over the past ten years the hard working individuals of the SCWHA have managed to raise approximately $150,000 for the Ronald McDonald House. Keep up the good work SC, the effort is appreciated!
The South Carolina Walking Horse Association has a large group of dedicated horse trainers. These trainers represented their state well at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration this year. Page 68 / The Scoop

Cottonwood Colt Preview On January 19th 2013, Cottonwood Farms in Corbin, Kentucky hosted their annual colt preview. It was a beautiful day with the sun shining and warm weather. There was a large turnout and several great upcoming two year olds! Several trainersfrom all over Kentucky and Tennessee attended and participated by bringing several crowd-pleasing colts! There were several colts exhibiting all throughout the day on Saturday. It was overall a great success and Cottonwood wishes to thank everyone for participating and hopes to see everyone again next year!!

Kentucky After Christmas Sale The Scoop would like to congratulate the Kentucky After Christmas Sale on the success of the first horse sale in its new location. Also, congratulations go to the former owners and agents who supported the annual event. For the past twenty five years, The Kentucky After Christmas Sale” has been conducted at the Tattersalls Sales Facility. The sale was located at the Red Mile Race Track in Lexington, Kentucky. 2012 was the final year for this location and many attended for the nostalgic purpose of reminiscing. This year, the Alltech Arena hosted the annual sale. Alltech Arena is located on the campus of the Kentucky Horse Park, just north of Lexington, Kentucky adjacent to I-75. The Kentucky Horse Park was the site of the 2010 World Equestrian Games. Making the move to the state of the art location was a monumental change. High quality Tennessee Walking Horses are traditionally offered at this auction. This sale brings the best of the best and gives buyers a chance to purchase a highly competitive show mount. Jerold Pedigo and David Landrum always run a first class sale with a great staff that keeps their sale running quickly and smoothly. For more information on the horse sale visit their website at www.horsesaleslp.com . If you have never been fortunate enough to attend the annual winter sale, mark your calendar in advance and plan to be there next year.
