History

W

ith the Trainers Show here it’s time to get to know some of the Trainers a little better and appreciate their history. Many of the trainers still showing today have been involved in training for the past several decades. The Scoop is featuring several ads this week in our issue of riders showing their THEN and NOW photos. So it seemed fitting to include the Trainers. Many trainers have come and gone, but several have made their lifelong career in the Walking Horse Industry. There are so many good memories of trainers from the good ole days as they would say, but they have worked very hard to modernized their training techniques and style and have overcome so much negative publicity over the years. The trainers today are uniting as one and striving to put a natural gaited horse in the show ring for Amateur and Youth rider’s weekend after weekend. They are presenting a positive image for our breed to the public. We thought you would enjoy seeing some THEN photos of your horse trainer or of some of the trainers you cheer for on Saturday nights. Many trainers that are competing today have accomplishments and World Championship titles from years ago that are worth sharing. Some of the guys have been around for a long time and have won all there is to win. When you see these guys make sure to mention to them you saw some oldie Goldie photos in THE SCOOP and that might just make them confess their ages. Our industry has come so far over the years and it’s a wonderful outlook on our breed to look back on our THEN photos and reminisce over the old days. THE SCOOP is honored to be a part of such a wonderful breed and great group of people. We are proud to have served you for the past 16 years and look forward to publishing our current photos one day in our THEN section of the publication. Also in this article you will see the past Trainer of the Year recipients’, past Assistant Trainer of The Year winners and the past Walking Horse Trainers Association Grand Champion winners. Today we have four trainers that were voted Trainer of the Year from the 70’s that are still involved with our industry as a trainer, owner, judge or ground man. There are eight Trainers of the Year winners from the eighties that are still involved. A few NOW facts about The Walking Horse trainers Association is last year they moved their show to White Pine, Tennessee. This year they are moving back home. The Calsonic arena in Shelbyville, TN will host the 2013 show. This year the Trainers have taken on another horse show and that is the Panama City Horse Show in Florida. The show dates for it are April 25-27. The show will be called the Gulf Coast Charity Trainers Show. So make plans to attend this event and support the trainers. The trainer’s association office is headquartered in the Walking Horse Capital of the World in Shelbyville, TN. Their office, directly across the street from Kroger’s, cannot be missed by anyone driving through Shelbyville. Marcie Allison is always ready to greet visitors at the office. Serving as the WHTA President for 2012 is Mickey McCormick. A fun THEN and NOW fact about Mickey is that he was in 1985 The Assistant Trainer of the Year. Today they have reached an astonishing 850 members to make the Trainers Association. A little THEN facts about the The Walking Horse Trainers Association, Inc. is it was established in 1968 under the first President Mr. Vic Thompson. The purpose of forming this non-profit organization was to promote and develop activities on behalf of and in interest of the protection of the members of their Association. The Walking Horse Trainers Association began with approximately only 200 members in their general membership. This Association concentrates on the positive aspects of the Walking Horse Industry and offers its support to many worthwhile projects.

Any horse show that offers the class can request the medallions and The Celebration will provide them at no charge. Horse show managers are encouraged to add the division building momentum throughout the year leading up to the 75th Annual Celebration. Applicable divisions include amateur stallions, amateur mares & geldings or combined. The Celebration will crown World Champions in both the FiveYear-Old Amateur Mare & Gelding Specialty and Five Year-Old Amateur Stallions Specialty and award World Grand Championship to the Five-YearOld Amateur Specialty winner. “I hope the winners will be as excited to win these commemorative medallions as the Celebration is to award them,” said Celebration Chief Executive Officer Mike Inman. “There will be a very limited number of people to receive these during the year and of course the World Champion and World Grand Champion medallions will truly be one of a kind and never duplicated,” concluded Inman. Show managers need to contact Connie Allen (x.107) or Margaret Eakin (x.106) at The Celebration (931-684-5915) to request the medallions and indicate how the medallions are to be engraved. Each medallion will include the class being offered and include “Inaugural Year 2013.” The Celebration requests photos of each recipient of the medallions to be emailed to the Celebration for inclusion on the new TWHNC Facebook page.

TWHBEA Introduces Incentives Lewisburg, TN - In response to the tough economic times and to the various issues effecting prices in the horse industry specifically, the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ And Exhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA) is extremely pleased to introduce three new incentives for Tennessee Walking Horse owners and enthusiasts the world over. “TWHBEA’s first priority is always to serve its members and the Tennessee Walking Horse community at large. The intent of these new incentives is to better serve and support those that love and enjoy our great breed,” states TWHBEA President Tracy Boyd. Breeders Vice President Mike Hicks, echoing Boyd’s sentiment, relates that, “each of these programs is designed to benefit our industry’s owners and breeders. In other words, our industry’s life-blood.” Family Membership - TWHBEA is proud to introduce a new Family Membership option. This has long been requested as a cost saving option by both members and non-members and TWHBEA is happy to fulfill this request. The new Family Membership fee will be $100 and each Family Membership will include two adults and all household children under the age of 18. Comparable to full adult memberships, benefits available at this time for Family Memberships include one subscription to the Voice Magazine, voting privileges for two, access to all TWHBEA programs, the ability to conduct business at member rates and one free transfer or foal registration per year (Transfer must be executed within 30 days of purchase. Foal registration must be completed within six months of foaling and the applicant must be the owner of the mare at time of foaling.) During this time, any transfer and/or registration, no matter how delinquent, will be accepted at regular stated fees without any late fees. It is hoped that this program will assist all of our members in updating and maintaining those records. Diligent Discount Program - As a reward to our diligent members, TWHBEA will be offering a discount program starting March 4, 2013 and running through July 1, 2013. The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry Nc sneak preview

Unrealized Appreciation Farmland Value and the Hobby Loss Rule By John Alan Cohan, Attorney at Law Appreciation in value of a taxpayer’s farm or ranch property is often a significant issue in the context of the hobby loss rule. Although a “reasonable” expectation of profit is not required, the profit objective must be bona fide. It is the expectation of gain, and not the gain itself, which matters. While the maintenance of complete and accurate books and records is important, it is equally important to consider the effect that repairs to and development of farmland has on the growth and success of an operation.

The North Carolina Sneak preview was held at the Lone Hickory Arena in Yadkinville, North Carolina, March 2, 2013 at 12:00 pm. It was very chilly, but everyone bundled up and enjoyed a fun Saturday afternoon with horse friends. There were many top colts and older horses, both Performance and Pleasure, featured at the preview, that will make a big splash in the show ring this year. The concessions were open, so people could grab a bite to eat along with all the yummy baked goods that the North Carolina Ladies Auxiliary cooked to help raise money. Some of the members were asked to make certain desserts because they were such a hit last year people wanted to buy them again this year! There was an auction held during the preview, that had many great horsy items that had been graciously donated to help the Association. The Calendar/Directory was passed to all members so they can know where and when all the upcoming events are. North Carolina is very proud to be home of the 2012 World Grand Champion, Walk Time Charlie. The Lone Hickory Arena will host the North Carolina Walking Horse Association Spring Show on March 30, 2013. Make plans now to attend this show and kick off the show season! In Fields v. Commissioner, 42 T.C.M. 1220, involving a cow-calf activity, the Tax Court said that the taxpayers’ losses were explainable in part because of costs incurred in developing the property. This case is important for both horse and cattle activities. The taxpayer had a 74-acre farm with residence. Various improvements were made to the land, including pastures, ponds, fences and land clearing. The Tax Court held that the future resale of the developed farmland for a profit must be considered in evaluating the taxpayer’s overall profit motive. The Tax Court also noted the poor market conditions for the sale of livestock, and said that the taxpayer’s losses were “unsurprising” given the poor economic climate. Moreover, the taxpayer’s pastureland was burdened by a drought that curtailed the planned expansion of the cattle herd, and reduced the availability of cattle for sale. This principle applies to any horse or livestock venture under the hobby-loss rule: If the taxpayer’s primary intent is to breed, sell and/or race horses, or to operate a cattle ranch, then unrealized appreciation of the land may be considered as part of an overall intent to profit from activity, irrespective of the actual profits. This principle is set forth in IRS Regulations section 1.183-1(d(1): “The term `profit’ encompasses appreciation in the value of assets, such as land, used in the activity. Thus, the taxpayer may intend to derive a profit from the operation of the activity, and may also intend that, even if no profits from current operations is derived, an overall profit will result when appreciation in the value of the land used in the activity is realized since income from the activity together with appreciation of land will exceed expenses of operation.” In most instances, where the land is integral to overall operations, the holding of the land and the horse or livestock-related activities are considered a single activity. In such cases the argument is that the taxpayers hope to reap an eventual profit from the resale of the farmland, even though there might be a history of losses on the horse or livestock activity itself. The IRS will attempt to refute this by contesting the taxpayer’s valuation of the property. It is therefore important to have an expert appraisal to support the valuation. Also, the IRS will argue that the holding of the land and the horse or livestock operations are two separate activities--in other words, the land was purchased primarily for the purpose of deriving a profit from its appreciation, and that the farming activity was collateral to that purpose. This argument will usually fail, because in most instances the land is integral to the horse or livestock venture. Choose Your Gait Farms Choose Your Gait Farms located in Northern Alabama.

WGC Outta Line and Kelly

In North Central Alabama near Decatur and Moulton, Alabama, there is a new Breeding and Training facility that is as much of a “fairy tale” barn as some of those horses that inhabit it are…. This place is Choose Your Gait Farms. The farm and facility is owned by Kelly Carter Peevy a Huntsville, Alabama business woman, who is a Vice-President of a Defense contracting firm. The farm consists of a state of the art breeding operation for her numerous World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse Stallions and World Renowned Friesians Stallions originally imported from Holland, along with World Champion Racking Horses and Other top stallions they stand for the public. Choose Your Gait Farms is focused on providing a unique opportunity for you to breed your mares to some of the most “beautiful and talented horses” in the world. They currently are standing Exceptional Stallions of different colors and breeds. Each Stallion is fully registered in their respective Breed Registry(s). The Stallion selection consideration at the current time includes World Champion and World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horses, Generator’s Santana, Outta Line, JFK’s Delight (aka Bingo), Grayline, The New York Yankee, 2012 World Grand Champion Racking Horse, Papa’s Final Choice, and WC Racking Horse, The Santini. Berend (Baron) the Friesian, a purebred Friesian imported from the Netherlands, is a STER Stallion, and a World Champion in Saddleseat, who can be crossbred with a mare of a different breed. Cornelius is also a STER Friesian Stallion, and Reserve World Champion. Doekle, the

Chris congratulated Kelly and Outta Line after their World Championship ride at the 2008 TWHNC. newest and youngest of the Friesian Stallions is also a STER Stallion, which Kelly imported in the spring of 2012 to Alabama from Holland. But perhaps the most famous of the Friesian Stallions, is the KFPS Approved Friesian Stallion, Anne 340 Sport, who was bought by Kelly in December 2012. Anne’s (pronounced ON-nah) arrival in Alabama is the first time in the history of the Friesian breed in North America, that a Friesian stallion has ever stood at Stallion in Alabama., not to mention, Anne is the only KFPS Approved stallion located in the Southern United States. There are very few KFPS approved Friesian Stallions alive in the world today, less than 75, with less than 25 of those located in the USA. Anne is truly a one of a kind for the Southern States. These titled stallions can be used for crossbreeding (with the exception of Anne) and will add their unique talents to each mare that is bred to one of them, to produce a foal with beauty, talent, conformation and personality. All Stallions at Choose Your Gait Breeding are offered live cover or fresh cooled shipped semen. All stallions also come with a Live Foal Guarantee. In addition to offering superior Stallions; they specialize in the training and starting of young horses of all breeds. Farm owner, Kelly, spent most of her childhood in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, but having also lived in Jackson, Mississippi where she remembered her first horse shows riding her own pony to the show and competing when she was 6 years old. Kelly has two Children a son, Carter who is a Sophomore at Auburn University studing Chemical Engineering and Kaite age 15, who is a sophomore in High School. Normally, you can find Kaite nearby

Choose Your Gait Farms

Anne 340 Sport as she loves going to the horse shows and cheering her mother on. Kaite also is planning to make her debut on the horse show circuit this year for the first time ever aboard a show horse. Kelly’s interest in horses, especially Tennessee Walking Horses came from her parents, who have always allowed and encouraged her love of horses. Both her parents, Linda and Jerry Carter, have shown over the years, but now her mom is helping Kelly with the business end of the farm, while her Dad is determined to re-enter the show ring again in 2013 after a lengthy recovery from major back surgery and heart surgery. Kelly’s interest in Friesians came almost 3 years ago when she decided to venture into other breeds as a result of some of the frustrations within the Walking horse world. As a child, and even as an adult, Kelly has always drawn portraits of houses, people, and of course, horses. It was the horse that she routinely drew, one with long tails that flowed in the wind, and a mane that would drag on the ground, that made Kelly realize she wanted to have that childhood horse she drew so many times. Berend (Baron) was the horse of her young girl dreams, and Kelly has been captivated by the massive, majestic, gentle giants ever since. After taking a vacation to Holland early in 2012, to study the magnificent black horse, she bought Doekle on her trip in Holland. Kelly’s vacations generally center around horse shows and she list the Friesian IFSHA National and World Championship show in Lexington, Virginia as one of her favorite None Walking shows. Kelly can be found every Saturday night at a horse show. Her favorite win comes from the 2008 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration when she won three blue ribbons aboard Outta Line. One of these titles was the first ever World Grand Championship spotlight ride for Kelly. Outta Line (aka “Otis”) is a grey stallion, and is one of the featured stallions at the farm. Kelly still shows Otis, and as a team, they remain undefeated since winning their title in 2008. Kelly says that she believes that the Walking Horse Industry is in a bad situation caused and brought on by certain organizations and participants that have intentionally harmed the industry, and she is fearful that their harm may be irreparable; but she also said that she is doing everything she can to restore it to its former days of glory. At this time, Otis has his first crop of coming 2 year olds under saddle, and they are all very talented and exciting youngsters.

Choose Your Gait Farms Chris Zahnd, age 46, is the trainer and farm manager for Choose Your Gait Breeding and Kelly’s mentor and best friend. Chris grew up in the area and has been training horses all his life. He learned much of his horsemanship under the guidance of his father, Jerome Zahnd, and except for a two month period when he worked for Steve Dunn of Bud Dunn and Son Stables, he has been training and running his own operation. Chris is the father of two children, Hunter age 16 and Emily, 18. Emily like her father has been showing most her life and is a great equestrian. Chris says that what he likes most about training of his horses is seeing them, and his riders, performing at their best and winning. Chris is a true horseman and perhaps even Chris is a bit amazed at his own versatility… he trains Walking Horses, Racking Horses, Friesians and is even now training and riding in Dressage. He smiles when asked if he ever thought he would be riding a very powerful trotting horse, and posting that trot as if he has been doing it his entire life, when in reality, he learned how to post mainly out of self defense when Kelly purchased Baron for Chris to train. But Chris has proven he is very versatile and will ride a giant, powerful trotting horse, a smooth gaited horse, or will drive a miniature 29” horse to the cart. Some of the great Tennessee Walking Horses that Chris started as youngsters are World Grand Champion, Three Under Par, World Champion, They Call Me Sampson, Escape From Alcatraz, Generators Cashing In, Lots of Luck, Jazz Talking, World Champion, Santa Monica, Lady’s Ebony Ace and he grins as he list that the greatest of them all he has started and been the only one to ever train, World Grand Champion, Outta Line. Outta Line is a result of the greatest advice Kelly says she ever received from Chris. He told her to trade her show horse, The Dance Hall Doctor, for the green, unfinished two year old, Outta Line. She was hesitant to make the trade, as she had just won a Reserve ribbon on Doc at the Celebration, her highest ribbon ever at the Celebration, but she trusted that Chris knew best, as he proved he did, when a less than 2 years later, that green colt, now a 3 year old, carried Kelly to her only World Grand Championship ride, in classes containing some of the industry’s top aged horses. Training horses is something that Chris absolutely loves and has always done. Chris laughed and said he remembers his first show was in the leadline class. He use to go and show with his sister. He says he still today believes something that he was taught a while ago, “That if you know you are right, keep your head up, stay the course,

and right will always win out, regardless of who is attacking and persecuting you.” Words to live by, words that Chris lives by daily. If you are looking for a first class operation, for breeding or training or anything “horsie” related, Choose Your Gait Farm in Alabama is open for business. The Farm has 31 stalls in the main barn, with two indoor riding arenas. The second barn has 16 more stalls, which also houses the breeding lab. A third barn serves as the “mare motel” for those ladies that choose to visit with the boys personally. Chris and Kelly both welcome you to stop by and visit their facility, and meet the Stallions. They are very proud of the operation and are looking forward to what the future holds for 2013.

Tennessee Walking Horse enthusiasts, both young and old, gathered on Thursday afternoon, March 7 to commemorate the ribbon cutting at the Tennessee Walking Horse Museum. Light refreshments, including a beautiful Tennessee Walking Horse cake were served. The museum is located in Wartrace, Tennessee across the railroad tracks from the historic Walking Horse Hotel. Bright blue walls with white trim and the original hardwood floors give the space a warm and inviting feeling. There has been an incredible amount of restoration done since the open house several months ago. However, there is still work to be A young Tennessee Walking Horse lover done and willing and able Tennessee Walking Horse lovers are needed to help with this work in progress. checks out a mare and colt. Anyone who is interested in supporting the museum financially or by volunteering is asked to contact President, Phillip Gentry at twhnmuseum@bellsouth. net.

The Row McLaughlin Benefit The Row McLaughlin Benefit was held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Blue Ribbon Circle in Shelbyville, TN. Country music artist Daryl Whorley performed at the benefit getting everyone’s attention and in the door! He sang several of his number one hits and a special song that was a crowd favorite,”Do You Remember”. A BBQ dinner prepared by Mike Graves and Jerry Sumners along with drink and dessert was served. There was a silent auction following the dinner and it is amazing how much our industry comes together to support a cause like this. There were so many items donated and the bidders paid top dollar knowing that their money was going for a great cause. James Benton Pendleton made the trip to serve as auctioneer. Everyone that knows James, knows how good he is at auctioneering and how he can keep everyone on the edge of their seats trying to buy the next item. James has been a lifelong friend of Sam McLaughlin, so he felt the need to come and support the event. He cleared his schedule and stepped in and did what he does best...auction! Row McLaughlin is the four-year old son of Sam and Jenny McLaughlin. Row is undergoing a kidney transplant. He is loved by everyone in the industry and comes from a family of horse people. His father, Sam, has worked until very recently for Allan Callaway Stables. He trained under Chad Baucom and David Landrum as well as training his personal horses. His parents owned Star Of The Future, one of Chad Baucom’s stake horses and both his sisters, Stephanie and Celia, showed. Jenny is most known for her spotlight rides in the youth division with Sundance Lady. Her family is longtime supporters of the Tennessee Walking Horse. Donations were sent in from all over, even a truck was set up in Monroe, NC at Baucom Stables for the Carolina people to drop off items and they were delivered in time for the benefit. Approximately $35,000 was earned. The crowd was packed with an estimated 500-600 people. This will help greatly towards the medical expenses for the kidney transplant that is estimated to cost around 1 million dollars. Jenny and Sam, along with Row, are amazed at what a wonderful weekend it was. They want to say THANK YOU! They appreciate each and everyone who helped make this possible and so graciously made donations. They can never thank you enough. Make plans for Friday May 3, 2013, to attend the Row McLaughlin/Greg Maupin Horse Show. The show will be held at the Bedford County Agriculture Center in Shelbyville, TN. This show will benefit both Row and Greg who need kidney transplants. This show has been held for the past nine years and was formerly known as the SCHS Band Show.
