“Racking” Up Awards!

Blake Wester joins Jamie and Connie Lawrence as they view the beautiful picture collage of the 2019 RHBAA World Grand Champion, High Sword. High Sword won RHBAA Horse of the Year and PRHTA Horse of the Year.

DECATUR, AL- It was a busy weekend on February 21st and 22nd for members of the Racking Horse Breeders’ Association and the Professional Racking Horse Trainers’ Association. These two associations joined together for their annual winter meeting and awards’ banquet. The event was located at the beautiful Double Tree by Hilton. Although the night was abundant with food, drinks, music, fun and fellowship, there was still one main focus for the gathering- Racking Horses. Owners, trainers, exhibitors and supporters gathered to honor those individuals and horses that made great achievements in 2019. One very special award was presented to High Sword, the 2019 RHBAA World Grand Champion. High Sword made history in the Racking Industry by becoming the only Racking Horse to win the RHBAA World Grand Championship three times. His wins occurred in 2014, 2015 and 2019. The Scoop congratulates High Sword, Jamie Lawrence and The Roy Wester Family on this remarkable fete. Congratulations are also bestowed on each division champion, trainer and owner. We look forward to meeting you in the winners’ circle as the 2020 show year is just around the corner. Page 58 / The Scoop

SHOW UPDATE If you weren’t able to attend the USDA Public Session earlier this month, this link will take you to the power point presentation the USDA representatives went over. SHOW suggests viewing it to see the changes they are enacting this year. https:// www.aphis.usda.gov/…/public-session-presentation.pdf

If there is one thing about my Dad that everyone can be in agreement on, it’s that what you see is what you get. No fancy bells and whistles, no sugar coating, no pretending, and no holding back when it comes to his opinions on, well, let’s be real, anything. My brother and I will both say loud and proud that we’ve never known anyone like him… most people who know him will 100% agree! Because my Dad is (yes, I am choosing to still use present tense, because past tense just doesn’t fly with me at the moment), the most straight forward and unapologetic person I know, I am going to make sure this announcement makes him proud, makes him laugh, and paints a picture of who he truly is. If I were to ask him right now, is this the kind of write up you’d want? He’d reply with, “YOU KNOW HUGH?? HUGH is right!!” He is the proudest republican you will ever meet. He is a Trump loving, concealed weapon carrying, horse and dog loving, conservative (to the extreme!) man and has never tried to prove himself to be anything else, even when others could be caught off guard by how blunt and outspoken he always is… especially through his Facebook posts! Good Lord, those posts could get out of hand, but he didn’t care and neither did I. I looked forward to go on a good political rant from my Dad, and even though my opinions don’t always match his, I love what he believes in anyway because he is always true to his heart. His love for horses is something I have always had a huge respect for because I carry the same passion in my own life for dance. He knows so much about this animal and would probably choose to spend the weekend in a horse stall rather than at a 5 star hotel if given the option. Hot sauce and jalapeño peppers are some of my earliest memories with him. He let me eat them straight off his fork when I was a little girl, maybe 4 or 5 years old. We have shared that taste for as long as I can remember, so even if you are a stranger reading this, whenever you see a bottle of Texas Pete or the hottest local hot sauce in your friendly neighborhood grocery store, have a laugh and buy a bottle… maybe don’t try it though unless you want your insides to catch fire. Because I have to keep this short, which is absurd because how do you keep something like this brief and concise, I will address his love for family last. I am not about to list all of the surviving family and relatives because if you know my dad, you know exactly who we are and that is all that matters to him. You also know exactly who precedes him in death if you are close to our family, but I will announce one of those names because he respected her more than anyone on this planet, his mama, Shirley Bartholomew, who no doubt was the first to welcome him in to his new home. Family was truly the top of the pyramid for my dad. My brother and me, our spouses, his grandsons, his sister, his nieces, grandnieces, his dad, who is Richard Bartholomew for those who did not know and is the greatest man alive according to Rick, and our wonderful Nanny are everything to him. It was not long ago he added in another person to the top of the pyramid, his wife, Anya. Along with her came more family to add into our circle, and we got the greatest gift of all, a brand new little baby to hold and love. My dad and Anya’s son, Little Ben, is an absolute God-send to our entire family, and God definitely had a plan by giving him to us. Anya, Ben, Anya’s family, and George the bulldog made him the happiest he has ever been in his entire life. For that, I am so incredibly grateful. His last several years were exactly how he would have wanted them to be, and there is no sadness when it comes to that truth. The Scoop sends our deepest sympathies to the Bartholomew Family.

EQUINE OBITUARY GUS MALZAHN Sarah Coffee Burks and Price Stables sadly announce the passing of Gus Malzahn. Gus was foaled on May 10, 2012. His sire was The Coach and he was out of a Jose’ Jose’ mare.

OBITUARY- BEVERLY MCNEILL Mrs. Beverly Marie Crawford McNeill of Andalusia, Alabama died on February 28, 2020 at her residence, surrounded by her family. She was 94 years old. Mrs. McNeill was born on April 9, 1925 to Clayton and Cleo Ammons Crawford. She was married to Mr. Lawrence McNeill for 66 years until his death in 2010. Together, she and her husband had two children, Shirley McNeill and Danny McNeill. Danny preceded both of his parents in death. Mrs. McNeill moved to Florala from Hartford, Alabama in the mid 1940’s and started McNeill Concrete. Three years later they moved to Andalusia and opened another concrete plant. In 1952 they received the Wilbert Burial Vault franchise out of Chicago, Illinois and today the McNeill family still own and operate the business. In addition to her hard work ethic, Mrs. McNeill was very active in the Pilot Club for many years, and on two occasions she was voted the Pilot International Foundation Sweetheart (PIF). Mrs. McNeill, along with her husband, also bred and raised Tennessee Walking Horses. They joined the association in 1977, and she was one of its oldest members. Together, Mrs. McNeill and her husband had several world champion Walking Horses. Mrs. McNeill always stayed active in the family business until her health forced her to retire a few years back. Graveside services for Mrs. McNeill were held on Friday, March 6, 2020 at the Andalusia Memorial Cemetery. Pastor John Hunt officiated. Pallbearers were Larry Stewart, Johnny Stewart, Tony Moose, Toby Freeman, Kenneth Moore and Bobby Surlin.

The stallion’s career began under the ownership of LaRue McWaters, but it didn’t take long for others to notice his talents. Rodney Dick was one of those who saw a great future for the young two-year-old and soon after, JoAnn Dowell and Susan Coleman were the new owners. During most of Gus’ career, Buddy Dick had the privilege of showing him, and in 2016 the powerful duo made a name for themselves in the Four-Year-Old division by winning blues at Manchester, Columbia, Woodbury and Walking For The Angels. 2017 brought on changes upon the passing of Buddy Dick. Taking over the saddle was Rodney Dick, and more blues followed. Gus Malzahn’s final show season was 2019 and his final horse show was the Walking For The Angels show. Susan Coleman had the honor of sharing his final blue ribbon with the talented walker after directing him to the win in the Trainers’ Auxiliary Members class. There were new plans for Gus in 2020 as Sarah Coffee Burks recently purchased the show stallion and placed him at Price Stables with trainer, Nick Price. On February 23, 2020 Gus Malzahn passed away. The Scoop sends our warmest condolences to all who loved this beautiful and talented Tennessee Walking Horse.

OBITUARY- PAMELA HATTON Pamela Jo Tanner Hatton, age 66, Union, Kentucky passed away January 28, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, Kentucky. She was retired from the Boone County Board of Education, having served as the Head of Adult Education. Pam was a very active member of Big Bone Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir there. Some of her favorite things to do included breeding Australian Shepherd dogs, horse riding, and most of all spending time with family.

In addition to her daughter Shirley McNeill, Mrs. McNeill is survived by three grandchildren; Amanda Moore (Kenneth), Chris McNeill, and Lance McNeill, all of Andalusia; four great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. The Scoop fondly remembers Mrs. McNeill and we send our condolences to the McNeill Family.

Her husband, Grover Hatton and mother, Alberta Tanner preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Jason Hatton (Tiffany) and Mandy Leverette (Layne); father, Don Tanner; siblings, Tammy Bixler (Chuck), Donnie Tanner, Jr. (Vickie), and David Tanner; grandchildren Alexis Fyffe, Elizabeth Fyffe, Emma Black, Laynie Jo Leverette, Eli Leverette, and Ryn Leverette.

FAST EVENTS

Visitation was Saturday, February 1st with services immediately following at Big Bone Baptist Church. Interment was at Big Bone Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Big Bone Baptist Church general fund or The Truckers Ministry, c/o Big Bone Baptist Church. The Scoop sends our warmest thoughts and prayers to the Hatton Family and all who loved her.

The following is information released from FAST. FAST Updates on upcoming events: In light of the serious situation with the COVID-19 virus, we have decided to reschedule the Spring FAST Gala. Based on the warnings regarding large gatherings, we feel it is in the best interest of our caterers, auctioneers and supporters to postpone the event to November 12, 2020 with a one day show following the Gala on November 13, 2020. We are committed to making this event as wonderful as ever. Once we are through these trying times, we will have a lot to celebrate. Then we will “Paint the Town Red”! We wish all of you the best of health. Our prayers are with you, our industry and our country. Thank you so much for the support of FAST that you have and continue to show.
