The amount of knowledg e and ex pertise shared this weekend were second to none, and so many participants are ready to put their lessons to work. 2020
As we look back on 2020, it will be a year that we will always remember. There was confusion with a world-wide pandemic, there was sadness because we lost loved ones and there were smiles because life continued with great friends and family…… and horses. The Walking Horse industry never fails to j oin together and overcome. 2020 was the year to prove there is strength in numbers, there is j oy in friendships, there is love in families and there is hope in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry.

Beyond
the Ring
with Blaise Broccard
In an industry typically dominated by male horse trainers, Blaise Broccard never hesitated to step in and compete with the best of them. Her equine knowledge has been accumulating since she was old enough to sit on a horse. Blaise was raised in Cedar Hill, Missouri, a small town outside of St. Louis. Throughout her childhood, she spent time learning about several different breeds. At age seven she was an experienced Hunter Jumper. This was also the age in which a visit to a horse barn would forever change her life. The barn was Ken Taylor Stables and the horses in training were performance Tennessee Walking Horses. One might call this encounter “fate”. Others may call it “love at first sight”. Nonetheless, Blaise Broccard had fallen in love with Walking Horses and never wanted to ride anything else.

F irst T W H Blaise ever showed, T ouc h’ s G enerator, and he r gr andpa, B ill Broccard. According to Blaise, Ken Taylor was a phenomenal horseman. She also credits the blind trainer for teaching her how to ride. While under the leadership of Taylor, Blaise began molding herself into the skilled trainer she is today. It was around this same time that she had the opportunity to begin showing and competing in Walking Horse shows. Her first show was a catch ride aboard Touch’s Generator. The owner of the horse was scheduled to show, but did not make it in time. This became the perfect opportunity for Blaise to display her skills in the Amateur Stallions class. She didn’t win, but blue ribbons would soon follow. Her first win was on a stallion named Dreams Winning Tradition. This was a special win, not only because it was her first, but also because Dreams Winning Tradition was the first Walking Horse she ever rode. The duo took the blue in the Amateur Specialty class at the HAWHA Fall Show in 1999. As Blaise continued riding and learning, it was finally time for her to have a Walking Horse of her own. When she was ten years old, she became the proud owner of her juvenile horse, Spuns Generationext. As a youngster, Blaise knew she wanted her life to be centered around horses. As the years went by, she observed, listened and practiced and knew those were the components it would take to become a champion. One particular trainer she studied was Jimmy McConnell. When asked who was her biggest influence in the show ring, it was an easy answer- Jimmy McConnell. Blaise fondly recalls one of those great moments. “When I was first getting started showing professionally, we were in Holly Springs, Mississippi and I was showing Gangster’s Hitman. Jimmy rode up beside me and we rode with our legs literally touching a whole lap! I was so nervous, not wanting to mess up and wondering what the heck he was doing. He finally looked over saying ‘Well come on girl!’ and went off doing the running walk past me. This was one of the many times Jimmy was teaching me to be a showman.”

Fast-forwarding to the present, Blaise Broccard has become a trailblazer for female trainers and exhibitors. She has proven it is all about the skills, the work ethic and the end result. There have been numerous “horse moments” for Blaise, but 2017 was the year everyone would hear her name. If one didn’t know Blaise Broccard when the 2017 Celebration started, there’s no doubt they did when it concluded. She made history by becoming the first female trainer to win the Three-Year-Old World Grand Championship. This incredible accomplishment happened on A Gin To Win. The duo won the preliminary and the stake. They returned to the ring in 2020 and won the Show Pleasure Stallions division.

In 2017, there was also another title Blaise had her eyes on- the World Grand Championship. Throughout the year, Blaise and Incredible Machine had made a name for themselves as contenders for the grand title. After they took reserve honors in the Aged Stallions Sec A preliminary, their fanbase grew. For Blaise, the nerves were real as she prepared for the final class. It was during this preparation that she feels she received some of the best advice that helped her in the showring. She was tired and sick from nerves but knew she needed to try and eat lunch. At a local restaurant, she was fortunate to encounter two different trainers. Jackie McConnell encouraged her and gave her some tips while Leigh Stuart gave her some instruction to ensure her gait transitions were smooth. She left feeling motivated and ready to take on the other talented contenders. Blaise and Incredible Machine ended the 2017 Celebration as the industry’s Reserve World Grand Champions. The crowd was behind them and the cheers vibrated the arena.

Beyond the Ring with Blaise Broccard
Today, Blaise has teamed up with Sam McLaughlin, training performance horses at Leatherwood Farms. She continues observing, listening and practicing while training great horses and striving for her ultimate goal of winning the World Grand Championship. She has become a great ambassador for the Tennessee Walking Horse industry, with somewhat of a “celebrity” status. It has become the norm for Blaise to have a trail of fans following her to say hello or simply pose for a candid. She has become a friend and role model to so many. The way she interacts with the public and positively promotes the industry is truly a gift. Blaise is very thankful for her involvement in this equine business, but if the truth is told, the Tennessee Walking Horse industry is thankful for Blaise Broccard. The Scoop congratulates Blaise on her many great accomplishments as a trailblazer, a history maker and a World Grand Champion trainer.
