CANDID OF THE WEEK

The Walking Horse Trainers’ Association is offering electronic voting for this year’s Horse of the Year awards. It is their hope to make the process easier for trainers and have a larger number participating in the voting process. Trainers will be able to login using their trainers’ license number and once in the system trainers will create a login and password that will allow them to vote. This process can be done from a computer, phone, tablet, etc. Simply select the category search the horses’ names alphabetically until you find the horse you would like to vote for. In some categories mares, geldings and stallions will all be listed but you would only select the appropriate horse for the gender of the division you are voting in. The final day for voting will be ecember 1, 2021.

BEYOND THE RING

with Eli Cunningham Eli Cunningham is a third grade student at L iberty School in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Even though he is only nine years old, Eli has worked hard making his mark in the Walking Horse industry. If you don’t recognize his name, you certainly will recognize his talent. His entrance into most show rings is usually accompanied with a mass of cheers for him and his big sorrel gelding, It’s The M edalist. Eli is a victim of “ generation horse fever” , meaning the young e hibitor was born with the s ndro e owing through his veins e is the son of Chase and B rittney Cunningham. B rittney j ust happened to win back-to-back World G rand Championship titles ( 1 9 9 8 & 1 9 9 9 ) in the Y outh 1 1 & U nder division with D elight’s M an Of P ride. She was known then as B rittney Wilson, daughter of Ja mes & M elissa Wilson. Ja mes has also been a familiar face in the Walking Horse industry for years. So if you are following the story correctly, Eli is a third generation Tennessee Walking Horse equestrian, tracing the footsteps of his P awpaw and his mother. It wouldn’t be fair to not mention Eli’s brother R idge Cunningham. R idge also loves horses, and he is a great supporter of his older brother, Eli.

BEYOND THE RING with Eli Cunningham

Eli seems to be an achiever by nature. He is learning that hard wor reall does a e a di eren e e is an honor roll student that also excelled at basketball, baseball and football, but horses j ust seem to be his passion. When he is not showing, he still wants to be at a horse show helping the Callaway Stables crew get the other horses ready. His summer days are not spent sitting inside with the air conditioner and a video game. His vacation days are spent in the barn learning and riding as much as he can. When he does have some spare time, he loves spending it with his family on their far or hunting and fishing Eli’s horse j ourney began two years ago. A t the age of seven, he got his first horse na ed ld l aso, and his trainer was M ickey M cCormick. Eli credits M ickey and his current trainer, Jo hn A llan Callaway for teaching him how to ride. In fact, Eli’s biggest in uen e in the show ring, other than his aw aw, is ohn llan, and that is uite ossibl the reason ustified onors is his favorite World G rand Champion.

In the fall of 2020, the perfect match was found. Its’ The M edalist and Eli came out strong. Since the fall of 2020, this d na i duo has ade five vi tor la s

BEYOND THE RING with Eli Cunningham

Eli & Milo won a blue ribbon in the working dog division at a recent dog show.

These wins were from the FA ST Showcase ( 2020) , Walking In The Smokies, Fayetteville B lue R ibbon Show, N orth Carolina Championship and most recently at the FA ST Fall Showcase. They were also awarded ten reserve championships. Two of those include Eli’s two reserve World Champions from this year’s Tennessee Walking Horse N ational Celebration. Those two accomplishments are his proudest show ring moments, while his favorite win was without a doubt, earning his first set of roses at the 2021 North Carolina Championship in A sheville.

BEYOND THE RING with Eli Cunningham

Eli is proud to be part of the Tennessee Walking Horse industry and he is proud to be carrying on the family tradition as an exhibitor. He has other family members that don’t show, but they participate by coming to his shows and cheering for him. His family being together and supporting him is one reason Eli loves showing horses. Other reasons are those typical of any nine year old. He is quick to mention he loves out-of-town horse shows, because he can miss a day or two of school. Eli is the future of the Tennessee Walking Horse industry. His competitive spirit and his passion for this breed should encourage us all. The Scoop congratulates Eli on his many accomplishments in such a short period of time. It is always a pleasure to greet the Cunningham and Wilson Families in the winners’ circle. We wish you continued success in the 2022 show year.
