The Dix River

FALL CLASSIC

BRODHEAD, KY- The Dix River Classic was held on October 23rd and 24th at the Brodhead Indoor Facility in Brodhead, Kentucky. The two-day horse show was quite successful in drawing numerous entries and a great crowd. The Groom’s Class created much excitement as the finale to the first night’s competition. Chad Curry and Defending The Title took the blue for owner Tom Ware. This was not the only blue for Ware’s stock of horses. Throughout the 51 classes, he took home five blue ribbons. Title Sweepstake and Ware won the Show Pleasure Amateur class and the Show Pleasure Championship. Maci Ware won the Youth 11 & Under class aboard Dollar’s Silver Collector and the Show Pleasure Youth class on Blues For Santana. The David Bullock Family also won big with five of their entries taking home blue ribbons. He’s Remington won the Pro-Am with Ryan Blackburn and Zane Bullock sharing the reins. Other wins for this family included Jazz Line and Zane Bullock- All Day Pleasure Youth; He’s Ballistic and Dr. David Bullock- Amateur Two Year Old; Chiquito and Dr. David Bullock- Trail Pleasure Amateur; I Am Jose Jr and Zane Bullock- Youth Ponies.

The Walking Horse Grand Championship was the last award given for this year’s Dix River Classic. This class had a free entry fee and $1,000 set aside for the winner. These awesome incentives drew lots of anticipation and high hopes of a great stake class, and it was, indeed, great! Five very talented and competitive teams answered the gate call. Riding their way to the grand championship title were Say Cash and Keith Blackburn for Dan and Susan Erwin. Reserve honors went to Whistlin’ Dixie AL and Jordan Caudill for Tim Brown. Rounding out the top three was Ryan Blackburn and Hole In My Pocket for Dr. David Bullock. The Scoop congratulates show management for a stellar fall equine event.

WELCOME COLBY RICE Advertising Sales Representative for Kentucky

My name is Colby Rice. I am from Grayson, Kentucky. I was raised by my mother, Lori Lewis along with Donnie Oppenheimer. Both sides of my family go back generations in the Walking and Racking Horse Associations. I have shown padded horses since I was three years old, as well as, an occasional pleasure horse. I have been honored to grow up showing two great horses, Dark Horse Candidate and JFK’s Protégé. Throughout the years, I got to help my mom when she covered for The Scoop. I am currently a sophomore at Morehead State University where I am pursuing a degree in Agriculture Education and Equine Science. At Morehead State, I am on their equestrian team where I compete on the hunt seat and western teams. I am super excited for the 2021 show season where I will get to show Mr. Joe Gills in the amateur divisions, along with meeting great people while working for The Scoop. The Scoop is delighted to have Colby come on board and help advertise your champions. Feel free to contact Colby at 606-315-5793.

Beyond the Ring with Darden Gladney

Throughout the years, there have been many individuals to participate in different divisions of the Tennessee Walking Horse industry. Often times, there are those who achieve greatly in this endeavor. Darden Gladney is one of these well-rounded individuals. Darden has accumulated an incredible thirteen World Championships (in Amateur Owned and Trained, Amateur and Open- including English and Western), two World Grand Championships (one Amateur and one Open), three Reserve World Grand Championships and five Reserve World Championships. These titles are shared between numerous divisions which include Lite Shod, Park Pleasure and Show Pleasure. Darden not only participates by owning and exhibiting, but he also participates by working behind the scenes. He has served on the TWHNC Advisory Committee and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association and the Walking Horse Owners’ Association. Through WHOA, he is also a licensed judge.

Page 46 / The Scoop

Darden Gladney’s successful story in the Walking Horse industry has been an ongoing journey since he was old enough to climb to the top of his family’s wooden plank fence and jump on the back of a well-trusted horse. It was around this time of his childhood that Darden could be found on a horse’s back riding in front of or behind his older sisters or various adults like his father and aunt. These memories took place in Homer, Louisiana where Darden was born, raised and currently resides.

BEYOND THE RING with Darden Gladney

An encounter in the late 1930’s with a Presbyterian minister is how the Gladney Family became connected with Tennessee Walking Horses. Darden’s family attended the Homer Presbyterian Church. When their new minister, Dr. Lloyd O’Neil, arrived from Columbia, Tennessee, he came with his Walking Horse mare named Merry Belle. Because there was no room at the church’s manse for a horse, Merry Belle was kept on the Gladney’s farm. Darden’s grandfather was impressed enough by the minister’s horse that he wanted to purchase one for his own. Dr. O’Neil knew of a mare, and a deal was made. Hutton’s Red Lady was delivered from Bell Buckle, Tennessee to Homer, Louisiana by train and the Gladney Family owned their first Tennessee Walking Horse.

Elizabeth and Brad Hutchinson at Gladney Farms

Southwestern at Memphis, which is now Rhodes College. Darden’s father’s college friend, Erskin Falls, suggested that the family would enjoy visiting the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville. Darden fondly recalls his first horse show memory; one in which Perfection’s Carbon Copy won the 1964 World Grand Championship.

It wasn’t until 1964 that Darden and his family would attend their first horse show. And yet again, it had a Presbyterian connection. Darden’s father and the majority of his family attended the Presbyterian school,

As time passed, Darden’s passion for Walking Horses grew, and his brother, Dr. John Gladney, became part of the journey, as well as, his daughter Elizabeth. All of the Gladney’s trainers have been influential and become dear friends. The late Wink Groover and his wife Nancy are two that Darden recalls. Darden credits Wink for teaching him many things about competitively working and showing a horse. Wink, in fact, is the one who helped Darden and his brother find such talented horses like It’s Up In Arms, Tijuana Tex and Jose’s No Counting Me Out.

BEYOND THE RING with Darden Gladney

Darden with Margo Urad at the Marshall, Texas show.

Darden also mentions Wayne and the late Bob Westbrooks as being influential. Wayne was always quick to offer encouragement and suggestions, while Bob was a great encourager and helper from the rail. Darden’s first International win happened in 1999. He directed Serious Threat to the International Amateur Plantation Canter Championship title. He attributed this win to Wayne and Bob’s help from the rail, and more importantly, Wayne not participating in the class. Darden also likes to remember his first win at a Walking Horse show. This just happened to take place in his home state at a one day show in Bastrop, Louisiana. He won the Plantation Pleasure class on a horse named Black And Blacker. In recent days, Darden has not been able to show as often as he would like. However, the Gladney stock of horses can still be seen competing because his brother has retired and taken up the slack in Darden’s absence. Dr. John Gladney has had a great year accumulating wins for their horses. Their current list of show horses include Who’s Your Daddy, Light Em Up, Big Time Charlie, Jose’s No Counting Me Out, Tijuana Tex, Moonshine At Midnight, Gen And Everything, Hello Hello and I Am Fearless. The Gladney brothers have been very pleased with a great show year and already look forward to next year under the training banners of Pioneer Stables (Dale and Josh Watts), The Colt Center (Bobby and BJ Richards and Southern Serenity (Patrick Thomas and Howard Hamilton).

BEYOND THE RING with Darden Gladney

The Fourth of July American Flag display at The Gladney Farm. Outside of the Walking Horse industry, Darden stays on-the-go working hard and promoting what he loves. His career is in education and he has served as a school administrator for 35 years. His volunteer schedule is also quite occupied. He enjoys photography and has a small studio. His family is a priority, which includes his daughter Elizabeth Gladney Hutchison and her husband Brad, who are New York state residents. Other important activities and projects consist of church events, The Ford Museum, the Homer Arlington Cemetery Association and he serves on the Louisiana State Arts Council. A project with which he is heavily involved and takes great pride is the American flag display on the family farm. This coincides with the Fourth of July Celebration Picnic that has been held on their farm for many years. As a gift to their community, the Gladney Family displays over 500 American flags, showing their pride and love for their country. Webster defines achiever as a person who achieves a high or specified level of success. If Mr. Webster was alive today, it is quite possible he would have placed Darden Gladney’s photograph with that definition. Because Darden is a humble, southern gentleman, one may not know of the many things he has done. However, Darden’s achievements are numerous and great. He has had great success in the show ring, in his career, in his hobbies and in his circle of family and friends. The Scoop would like to recognize Darden Gladney for his success “beyond the ring” and for being a great and positive influence in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry.
