E D I T O R S LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

ROBERTA DEANNE B. MARTIN Editor-In-Chief

Ever since I was a child, the medals, the certificates, and the laurels have been my standard when I say that I achieved victory. However, growing up I have realized that winning is just an outcome of competition and victory is when I can transform the anxiety, worry, and daily problems of life into remarkable results by keeping things in a positive perspective.

Battles in life are inevitable; we do not know when and how they will affect us. Yet, what matters the most is you pick the slow road to success and see yourself as a warrior. You can overcome, transcend, and attain the unattainable; just believe in yourself. On top of that, keep in mind that failing is part of the journey to success, just rest and afterward get up and uphold your goal. We started from seed; through all the love and support that you shower in every issue of the Scroll, we eventually grew into a blooming tree. As we go through peaks and valleys; I must say that we successfully survived this academic year.

This S.Y. 2021-2022 has taught us valuable experiences and shared treasures of learning moments. All of us have been strong, independent, and empowered students in this mode of learning. I must say that I am so proud of all of us; we may not face each other physically at the moment; I hope someday we will and still get to acknowledge each other. On behalf of the editorial board and staff of The Scroll, we would like to express our utmost and heartfelt gratitude to all of the people who continued in supporting every issue. SUCCESS: The battle of consistency and perfection

© Cayie Martin

According to Merriam-Webster, perfectionism Is defined as 'a disposition to regard anything short of perfection as unacceptable'. Which means that the perfectionist will continue to perform tirelessly until they believe that their work product is perfect. However, is perfection even possible? Is it worth trying to achieve? At some point in our lives, we will try to strive for perfection. But let me tell you that it is not the key to have a successful life. It is a damaging and unrealistic concept. When you have the mindset that you must be perfect with every detail, there are chances that you are going to crack under pressure. It only sets you up for failure, disappointment, and making the progress a whole lot harder than it would be.

On the other hand, consistency helps you to make progress, be better and eventually achieve your goals. Focusing on the progress can motivate you to keep going. It also builds your habit that can positively change your personality. In connection with this, when the pandemic started, a lot of students were not able to cope with changes. There are struggles that we encountered; and adjusting from classroom to online class is quite difficult. But after a period of time, we learned how to get through this situation. We adapted to this new normal. And each day, we become better and seek for more improvements. The activities of Jose Rizal University, Junior High School (JRU-

JHS), were now held through different platforms. Rizalians were still able to shine despite being at home. Remember that consistency is the critical driver for success. It leads to habits; habits form the actions we take everyday; and action leads to success. If you are having a hard time, just relax and contemplate your current situation. No one expects you to be perfect. Mistakes and challenges are part of your journey and your growth. Keep in mind that overnight success does not happen. You have to climb every step of a long staircase to make it happen. You have to dedicate yourself and stay focused on the things that you want to achieve.

Jose Rizal University is committed to the development and growth of the community through various outreach programs --- be it educational, economic, social, civic, or cultural. One of the initiatives of the Junior High School Division is to reach out to the different public schools in the country through book donations. The chosen schools either have a limited variety of books or an almost empty library due to a shortage of funds or typhoons. The books are shipped from the United States of America (USA) through the generosity of the American teachers and philanthropists Ms. Sandra Makielski, a Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms (TGC) fellow, and her sister Dr. Kathleen Wilson. The book donation has become a collaborative project between the USPH headed by Mr. Rufo de Leon, Chair of the English Department and a Fulbright Philippines alumnus, and Ms. Sandra Makielski. This project aims to

develop the habit of reading and elevate the reading comprehension of every Filipino learner. Based on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), in 2019, the Philippines ranked the lowest in reading comprehension among 79 participating countries. Reading is one of the most essential skills of every learner for a wide variety of human activities. Poor reading comprehension affects not only the communication skills but also the analytical skills of the student. In connection to this, last April 22, 2022, the JHS team headed by the Principal Mrs. Grace Marie B. Martin, the project lead for the US-PH Library Builders Mr. Rufo de Leon, and the Student Development Coordinator, Ms. Gemma V. Garcia, together with the English, Math, Social Studies teachers, and the non-teaching staff donated around three-hundred books to three schools in Zambales ---Olongapo City

Literacy is the bridge to nationbuilding. Poor literacy skills impede the success of an individual as well as the growth of the country. Schools have a big role in nation-building. Teachers must intensify the reading habit of students to develop their reading comprehension skills and eventually make them critical and analytical thinkers. Dr. Jose Rizal once said, “The youth is the hope of tomorrow,” This is incongruent with Margaret Fuller’s words, “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader”. During four years in the Junior High School Division (JHSD), blood, sweat, and tears were induced. Struggles and adversities were faced and yet the students have here remained. “Just proceed with going with the flow while maintaining consistency in your work.” — Dannayah Dela Cruz, the leader of 10-A’s Group 3 remarked. As the Guided Research (GRES) kicked off, a fresh challenge was given to the 10nth graders. Diverse research problems and titles were called into question and eventually exclaimed into action. After three quarters of working on the paper, The final research presentation and awarding ceremony took place last May 5-6. The presentation kicked off with the division of each section’s group through clusters where each cluster has one awardee for the best in research presentation title. The teachers from different subject fields of JHS served as the reviewer of the research papers.

In addition, one award was given as the Best Research Paper, where 10-A’s Group 3 brought home the bacon. According to the group, in order to claim success, they overcame struggles such as creating the research title, realizing that mixed research is difficult, finding a lot of loopholes, citing properly, and many more; however, through communication, teamwork, and commitment, they faced these challenges head-on with confidence and willpower. Particularly, they struggled with the methodology, results, and discussion portion of the research paper. “Other than having great minds, the best traits that my group have are that they listen well, act accordingly, and commit decidedly to their work.” stated Dela Cruz. This is not the end yet a journey to a fresh beginning in a new world of education. Indeed, these students have shown exemplary work filled with effort and determination. Thereupon, the grade 10 students certainly grasped new ideas and skills where they developed abundant topics that would be of great help to nationbuilding and open new doors to societal innovation. © Dannayah Dela Cruz

SPORTS JRU’s Heart of Sports: Intramurals 2022 By: Xian R. Dondonilla It’s none other than Junior High School Division’s Mr. and Ms. Intramurals where representatives from all levels compete for the title Mr. and Ms. Intramurals 2022. And for representatives of Mr. Intramurals, we have Zildjian Lopez from Grade 7, Sean Gabriel Simo for Grade 8, Bryan Joseph Arcangel for Grade 9, and Ryle Steven Villanueva for Grade 10. For Ms. Intramurals, our representatives are Savannah Camarines representing Grade 7, Princess Andrei Velasco for Grade 8, Athena Darbin for Grade 9 and lastly, Lorraine Benedicto for grade 10. Lorraine Benedicto of Grade 10 and Bryan Joseph Arcangel of Grade 9 snatched the title of “Mr. and Ms. Photogenic”

© JRU FB page Sports is one of the events that students look forward to, and that’s why intramurals was created.

The champion awarded for Call of Duty Mobile was Team Varmints with students from Grade 9 and Grade 7.

The word “Intramural” was coined from the Latin words “Intra” which means “Within” and “Murus” that means “Wall”.

As for Mobile Legends, it was Team Vendetta Main with students coming from Grade 10 and Grade 9.

Unfortunately, in the middle of this pandemic, all of us are sure that we still can’t do physical sports and that’s why Jose Rizal University decided to implement the Online Intramurals.

Meanwhile in Valorant, Team Rouges brought home the gold with students from Grade 8, 9 and 10.

With the theme “Junior High School Division Intramurals 2022: Breaking The Code Through Sports and Action”, Call of Duty, Mobile Legends, Valorant and Online Chess were the games for this year's online intramurals.

And finally, in chess, Xian Cyren Meriales from 9A was able to take the title as champion. Of course, we can’t forget about the highlight of the event.

The event was hosted by Julian Sarsagat and Rhianna Joy Ruiz from Grade 9 Section C. Former JRU Heavy Bomber, now part of the country’s professional league, Mr. Marvin Hayes filmed a video message for both the students and participants. “Of course it’s not easy but it’s worthy. So just keep believing on yourself to fulfill your dreams” the player stated during his short video message. After Marvin Hayes' message was played, a video montage of all the games played in the intramurals were played. The champions of each game were rewarded with E-Certificate and other prizes prepared by the division.

And crowned Mr and Ms. Intramurals were none other than Lorraine Benedicto and Bryan Joseph Arcangel. The program was followed by a number from one of the BTECH teachers, Mr. Alvin Joe Veloso who was once featured in The Scroll’s first issue. And the program was concluded by our student coordinator, Mrs. Gemma V. Garcia. “This is the last major event for this school year, but of course not the least, but rather, one of the best” the student coordinator stated and ended the program. Always remember, Rizalians, it’s not about winning or losing, but it’s the Rizalian spirit all students have inside.

JRU snatches a breakthrough win over Benilde, 74-68 By: Marcus Dwein Ferrer Jose Rizal University (JRU) created headlines by defeating College of St. Benilde (CSB), 74-68, in the NCAA Season 97 men's basketball tournament, on Tuesday, April 12 at the La Salle Green Hills Gym. JL De Los Reyes recorded a double-double win, scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds and dishing out three assists. Words can’t express how one wants to be Able to express themselves ever so free While others feel like a bird trapped inside a small cage Longing for something in their lives to change But they know, they can do something for themselves They know that one can help themselves But… They are full of buts! Full on anxieties and bad guts… “Oh dear, It’s hard when your enemy is your own mind Sometimes, even if you wanted to, you can’t really unwind I’m trying… I’m doing my best To be active, motivated and determined like the rest” Keep on trying, bear it in mind Do your best, one should remind But don’t be too hard on yourself, it will do you no good Achieving success sooner than expected may be great, but is it really worth it if you’re drowned in your deep emotions and misfits. Life is a tough journey after all It’s not always about happiness, even sadness Even if we feel like everything in our life is a mess There will always be a way to success

Family is a place of safety, but only some feel this way For me family is a double-edged sword, as a result I stay at bay There is no time for gloom or problems around them I was taught that they are the roots that give the necessities And so, I am one to give support as the stem The world is filled with love and happiness But those who think this are told to use glasses This happiness is only a façade People who think otherwise would be considered odd With this, I consider myself odd I see happiness and joy because I pray to God My anxiety and problems are washed away when I'm with my squad Reach your goals and fight Even if you are kicked down onto the mud

The Endless Bed of Blue By: Kennett Gavin Dolomandin

On this planet, there are mountains high as can be Its mighty tip is up high, where the eye cannot see But with all this land there is still one place I can flee It is the blue, beautiful, bewildering sea There is magic in this endless bed of blue I harness it as if it's something I was born to do I love to look at it while eating mom’s stew But the best thing about it is the sunset view The shore is like the tip of our mind Wetting our feet feel like a hug so sweet and kind There are so many things that you may collect and find But if you walk on some shellfish, you could be blind Betwixt the beauty of the sea accompanied with a cup of tea There is chaos and violence in the sea in which anyone can agree The big problems of the three can be the balance’s key Thunder, water, and waves are balance for the beauty of the sea I guarantee

Battle for Peace By: Kennett Gavin Dolomandin

Day ten of the war in Ionia. Food rations are low and squadrons are falling left and right. My battalion has been reduced to only a company in the span of two weeks. I'm covered in mud and blood. The air I breathe is a mix of smog and iron from the death that I sense nearby. It is true that I never wanted to be in this battle, but I do not have a choice. To keep my family secure and happy, I must fight. But if I come home in a box, all of this would have been for nothing. Two months ago, I was just a happy father, son, brother, and friend. I was having breakfast and suddenly men wearing military uniforms showed up and knocked on our door. They told us that the neighboring country was invading our land little by little. Their army took over 10% of our country. And being the only man able to fight and knowing Arcanian magic, I was chosen without a doubt to become a soldier. I was forced to comply, or my family would have to be deported for treason to our motherland. In the base of our military HQ, we were trained to use our magic as weapons and to bind them to our swords and blades. In our training I had the best performance and fastest reaction time out of the 800 new recruits in the base, and so I was appointed as Lieutenant Colonel to lead our battalion. We were deployed on December 21 in the middle of the war. We weren’t scared of losing our lives, our dignity, and pride. We were afraid of the consequences of losing this war. We had to win, to defend our country, our homeland, our family. This is a fight that had to be fought to the end. I will not falter nor surrender. I will lead my company, the rest of my battalion, to fight the invader Noxus with their never-ending rage and happiness towards the cries of help. This is our victory, and I will lead it for the sake of humanity.

My Little Boy By: Jieane Gale Delos Santos

My name is Rosvyn Dacuno, I am currently twenty-four years old, I’m proud to be called a “Lolo’s boy”. My grandfather was the only one who raised me since my parents died when I was just three years old. I was always with my grandpa since then, he loved me, took care of me, and protected me, and I also did the same to him in simple ways. Nothing matters to us except for each other. Until six years ago, I needed to study in Manila. But after I’ve finished studying, I've decided to go back to my hometown and to my beloved grandfather, Gregorio Alcantara Sr., or a.k.a Lolo Goryo.

© Lian Gabriel Niedo

“Well, if it isn’t our favorite grandson! Vyn!” Grandpa shouted from a distance. “Aw, come on grandpa, I’m your only grandchild.” I replied, Grandpa laughed as I walked to him. “I missed you, grandpa!” I said as I hugged him. “ I also missed you very much, Vyn. But as I always tell you, Grandpa will always be with you.” Later on, I went to my room and felt a hinch of guilt. Well… It’s because six years ago, We got into a serious conflict. Grandpa didn’t allow me to go to Manila, for he thought I was still young and that I couldn’t be myself. Of course, I understood where he came from, but it was my dream to study in a prestigious university in Manila as a full-time scholar. I always thought of both our desires, but I decided that it is time for myself, my own dreams and aspirations. I kept on convincing him, but he never listened, so I thought, “Why won’t he support me on this one?” I always followed the things he wanted all my life, always took care of him, I never rebelled against him. So I lost control and said all of those thoughts to him…but in a harsh way. “I always wanted to help the people here! I always wanted to help you! This is also for you, lolo, not only for me! And, I’m not the little boy you’ve always thought of anymore!” Some words I harshly threw at him. “Iho, time to eat!” Grandpa shouted, As I went down the staircase, I heard him coughing… “Lo? Are you okay?’ I asked, “Yes apo, don’t mind this, just the usual cough.” he said, but I still felt like something was off, he quickly moved as he noticed as I was there . But I never minded it at the start. Weeks passed, and I started working at the province’s hospital. I was nervous at first but later on got used to the environment. But, later that night, as I was searching for documents for my work, I was shocked to see Grandpa's medical files… “Positive for lung cancer, stage 4?” I felt devastated when I read the files. While grandpa was sleeping, I was crying on my knees, needing answers and explanations. We talked in the morning, tears kept rolling down my face as I asked “Lo, since when? Lo, why didn’t you tell me? Lo, did you get treatment, will you get cured?’ I begged for grandpa to answer, but he responded “The reason why I didn’t want you to leave is because I was scared that you’ll leave me alone before I die”. As he wiped the tears from my face, I replied 'No grandpa, you won’t die…We’ll get you cured, I’ll do anything to get you cured!’ I cried “You will still be on my 25th, 30th, 40th and if possible on my 50th birthday! I will get your dream vehicle for you, we’ll still be able to go fishing every weekend!” As I said those words, I tightly hugged him, as if I was a toddler gripping on to their parents and not wanting them to leave , and as if it was the last time I'd be able to hug him. “I told you, I’ll always be with you, little boy, it may not be physically, but in your heart. All people will face death eventually, the thing you said years ago made me realize that we can’t prevent birds from spreading their wings, no matter how dangerous the sky is.

You’re at the right age to make decisions for yourself, I shouldn't have hindered you, and I apologize for that, also for keeping this a secret for years. But now, what’s important is we’re together, apo. If I will be able to wish for one last thing, it is for the two of us to spend more time together, before my last breath, and even at the time I’ll pass away, I want you to be by my side. ” He added, I looked him in the eyes…It felt like staring into the eyes of an angel. I felt like he was cleansing all of my negativity away, all the frustration I had. So as I calmed down, he said “Let’s go places this month! I’ve always wanted to go to Baguio with you.” and I nodded. Weeks later, we went to Baguio, and then, we spent another two months wandering in Ilocos, Pangasinan and Pampanga. I was happy, happy because he’s happy. He was the happiest, even if he weakened each day. I watched him everyday, the way he’s getting near the “due date”. Of course, I felt sad inside, losing the most important person in my life, but looking at him, he’s happy with me. It's a great honor to be with him, to be his only grandchild, and the person who he loves the most. One day, he requested me to play his favorite song and to dance it with him. I lent all my strength to help him with his last request. I can’t resist my tears rolling down my face while dancing to him. Grandpa notices it and holds my cheek, then wipes all of my tears. Until his last breath, I was there, just as he was waiting for me to come out from the room during the time of my birth. I could never imagine my life without his existence, but as he said, death is a part of life, it is natural. Heart wrenching and devastating, but all natural. It’s understandable to feel frustrated, confused, and terrible, but we should not dwell on it, because then we’ll forget to do the next right thing, to cherish that person and the time that’s left. Life goes on, no matter what. Lo, I know you’re watching me. Now, I am on a mission to help others feel the love and tender care you gave me. And that experience made me the person I am now, I’m proud to be Doctor Rosvyn Dacuno, twenty-four, Chairman and Founder of the successful Gregorio Alcantara Sr. Foundation.
