In this, the 40th anniversary season of Port Perry MoJacks Junior ‘C’ hockey, the team has reached into its past to help guide its future, with former player Jon Campbell taking the reins as Head Coach. Campbell, a Courtice resident, was hired in the spring of 2012 as bench boss of the team after the resignation of former coach Corey Bricknell. Bricknell had guided the MoJacks for the past three seasons and won the MoJacks’ fifth COJHL Championship in 2011, after an historic comeback from a three-games-to-one deficit in the Finals against the team’s arch rival - the Uxbridge Bruins. Campbell inherits a club that struggled to find consistency last season, never winning more than two games in a row before being ousted in three straight games at the hands of the Georgina Ice in the opening round of the playoffs. Campbell comes to the MoJacks with a solid reputation as a very dedicated and enthusiastic coach who has earned his apprenticeship toiling in the Minor Hockey Coaching ranks for many years at all levels, up to and including AAA Midget in the Oshawa and Bowmanville areas. Last season, Campbell served as Head Coach and GM of the Port Hope Panthers of the Empire B Junior C League, and has previously served as an assistant coach at the Tier II Junior ‘A’ level with Cobourg and Port Hope. “When we interviewed him, he showed that his years as a MoJack player has a special place in his heart for this organization,” said MoJacks GM Murray Parliament. Parliament would go on to address the importance of hiring alumni to guide the team. “It’s not necessary, but it’s the best start you can get, I believe, if you’ve got someone who is familiar with Junior ‘C’ hockey,” Parliament stated. When describing the type of team MoJacks fans will see take to the ice in the fall, Campbell noted that hard work will be a hallmark of the team. “You certainly want your rules in place and good citizens first and foremost,” Campbell said. “They’ve got to be committed to play - if not, it’s a waste of time. I’m not here to waste time and babysit players. I want players who come to play.” Campbell added that his coaching style will remain flexible since every team

A MESSAGE FROM THE MOJACKS PRESIDENT of time to prepare for school the next day. Our Executive Board has been working very hard over the off-season to make this a very exciting and special year, and we sincerely hope that you will enjoy the results of their efforts. As part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, the MoJacks will be hosting a very special day on Sunday, October 28, when we face-off against the Clarington Eagles at 2 p.m., in which we will be celebrating our 40 years with a host of special activities planned for the afternoon. More details will be announced over the next couple of weeks, so we hope that you will keep this day open to join us in celebrating this very special occasion. To our coaching staff and players, best of luck during the 2012-13 season and enjoy the ride. B U TC H S I M M S MOJACKS PRESIDENT
It is with great pleasure that I welcome everyone to this, our 40th year of Junior ‘C’ hockey in Port Perry, which we hope will be an exciting and rewarding season for our players, staff and certainly our fans. I am extremely proud to be part of the MoJacks organization and must pay tribute first and foremost to Marjorie and Dave Jackson for their continued support over the past 40 years which started with the Flamingo Pastries business, and changing later to Mother Jackson’s Open Kitchens. Thus, the MoJacks name is very unique and interesting, not only in our community, but in the hockey world. Thanks again to Marj and Dave and we hope we will make you proud as we journey into another exciting season of Junior ‘C’ hockey in Port Perry. As well, I would like to thank our many jersey and program sponsors for their continued support of our club. We hope that our dedicated fans will identify with these advertisers over the course of the 2012-13 season. New for this season is our revamped game night program and newsletter. Hopefully this will provide our fans at each home game with items of interest about our league, players and organization. As well, this year we have moved our starting time for home games to 6:30 p.m., from the usual 7 p.m. start time, and hope that it will give the youth in our community an opportunity to attend games and still be home with lots

plays a different style, and it’s important to be able to adapt to any opposition. “You want to be able to have guys who, while they might specialize in a specific role, are able to play in all situations, because it’s a long season and you never know what might happen from night to night,” Campbell said. According to Campbell, the team had many tough choices to make in training camp when finalizing the roster prior to the season opener, which was held on Sunday, September 23, where the team fell to the Clarington Eagles by a score of 5-3. “Having so many quality players in camp was actually a good problem to have,” Campbell said. “We feel that we were able to add some very talented hockey players who should compliment the excellent group of veterans we have returning this year.” While the MoJacks may be somewhat short on size this year, one area where they won’t be lacking is heart, according to Campbell. “It’s true that we aren’t an overly big team, but I feel that our speed will make us tough to play against this year. We have a lineup full of energetic players who are more than willing to take on whatever role is necessary to help the club be successful,” Campbell explained.
Over the course of the off-season, the team also added Assistant Coaches Clair Cornish and Chris Seiler, who will aid Campbell this season behind the MoJacks’ bench. Cornish, a graduate of the Port Perry Minor Hockey System, is widely considered to be one of the greatest players to ever don a MoJacks jersey. Prior to spending the last three seasons of his junior career with the MoJacks, Cornish played two seasons in the OHL with the Oshawa Generals, with whom he won a Memorial Cup in 1990. The chance to step behind the bench with the team he grew up watching - then playing for - was simply too enticing for Cornish to pass up. “I told my wife and family that this is one of my goals to get involved with junior hockey, and after the past few years coaching, I felt that this was the right time , and the right opportunity presented itself. I’m sure I’m going to learn a lot from Jon and his experience,” Cornish told The Standard. Seiler, the 2010 COJHL MVP while a member of the Uxbridge Bruins, joined the team last year as a Goaltending Consultant. His experience paid immediate dividends, as the MoJacks’ goaltenders showed great improvement under his tutelage.
