The VFAA is a non-profit furthering art and creativity in our community. We oﬀer a range of art classes for people of all abilities, gallery exhibitions and sales, monthly meetings, community events and the Suzanne Haskew Arts Center, the SHAC at 125 S. Main Street, downtown Milford, Michigan. Our special needs young adults and adults art group, Peacock Art Club (PAC), meets weekly. That is, when there’s not a pandemic going on. We hope and anticipate life to get back to relative normal very soon. Creativity helps reduce stress and anxiety. Take time and do something creative today. It will do your mind and heart good. The VFAA continues to pursue online alternatives to give all of us creative fun during exceptional, stressful times. Please consider a donation and support our eﬀorts.

The following artworks are presented by the artists as the collection of the Village Fine Arts Association (VFAA) Exhibition and Sale, Poetry Art Night.

PAN 2020 PAN is a juried and judged Exhibition and Sale physically on display as of March 18, 2020 at the Suzanne Haskew Arts Center (the SHAC), in Milford, Michigan. PAN entries consist of an artwork and poem inspiring or inspired by the art. The poem can be original or previously published, but must be acknowledged as so. Only original poems are judged. All art entries are juried and judged.

PAN is a vibrant, creative show. It brings out the best in local artists and poets. Unfortunately, at this time, no one will see PAN live at the SHAC. We hope that changes soon! In the meantime… Unusual circumstances and State of Michigan Executive “Stay At Home” Orders allow for creation and sharing in new and exciting ways.

VFAA PAN 2020 Virtual Exhibition & Catalog VFAA 2020 PAN VIRTUAL AWARDS PRESENTATION Hi – I’m Linda Onderko, President of the VFAA, on whose behalf, along with the Milford Public Library, I welcome you to our 28th Annual Poetry Art Night (PAN) celebration, presented virtually for your stay-where-you-are convenience! Of course, we would much rather have held our usual party where we get up-close and personal - sharing hugs and handshakes, greetings and congratulations – gathering at the abundant table, sipping wine and enjoying live music from Luti and Bobby Pennock. But alas we cannot do that. But neither can we let that stop us from innovating! Being the creative sort, the VFAA has successfully adapted this popular event over the years to make sure the show goes on! A lot can happen over 28 years. Whether we’ve needed to weather the weather, to be powerful in outages, or extract any number of monkey wrenches that get thrown into the mix, we have always looked forward to gathering in love and laughter - even at times celebrating through tears. But this time, it’s virtual! Our tireless volunteers were well underway with PAN, even getting as far as hanging the exhibit at the SHAC when all plans changed! They then went the extra mile this year to make sure that even though we are all experiencing unique challenges, this impressive exhibit, pairing art and poetry (and combining music), will still be available for your appreciation. Thank you to our Executive Director, Sue Gollon – the SHAC Coordinator Lish Brown – Candace Brancik who designed the new awards as well as handling a lot of everything else. Thank me too because I did lots of stuff. There are many more volunteers who were essential to this project and we are grateful to each and every one. Yay everyone! We also love our loyal patrons, sponsors, donors and award sponsors who come through each year, ensuring another successful event. The silver lining may be that you can sit quietly in the pajamas of your choice, with your preferred beverage, click on the music and enjoy the show at your coziest convenience. Look and read carefully because there is a test at the end. It’s called People’s Choice and you know what to do. I’ve been asked about the JURYING process. Just so you know, we had almost 100 entries this year! Three jurors independently scored each entry. The scores were added together and averaged. The top scoring 75 pieces were then accepted into this exhibit. It was no easy task to decline the rest but space limitations made that a painful necessity.

April is National Poetry Month – an opportune time for reading and writing poetry inspired by “whatever causes the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings”, as Wordsworth noted. Poetry is the chiseled marble of language; it’s a paint-spattered canvas – but the poet uses words instead of paint and the canvas is you! W. B. Yeats observed “Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry.” AND THE WINNERS ARE! The Incredible Find By Donna Thompson Walking through the woods one day, the sun was shining bright. Right at the edge I came upon, a most incredible sight. The biggest flower I ever saw, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had to go investigate, Its beauty and its size. Its petal soft and seeds of brown. So perfect and, what grace. I stared and smiled so gleefully. Just couldn’t leave this place. Looking up I said hello, it smiled back at me. I thought that I should pick that flower, for mom and dad to see. It swayed and danced against the sky as if to say, you know, The birds the bees the squirrels will feed, upon my seeds… And so, I’ll talk about my incredible find, I left that flower there It’s standing tall against the sky for everyone to share.

The Cabinet By Geri Ryan-Harden She locked him in her deepest cabinet and would not let him out though I could hear him thumping when I came downstairs. Sparkling sweet sugar had lured him from his hiding place perhaps not spying a trap pasted with peanut butter, he took a chance and was unexpectedly eye to eye with my mother, (never a good position to be in) as she reached for some sweetener to stir in her tar black coﬀee. But really, a bicycle lock, for all the world his kryptonite, pushed between door handles and a note too: DON’T OPEN But of course, I had to.
