VFAA PAN 2020 Virtual Exhibition & Catalog

The following artworks are presented by the artists as the collection of the Village Fine Arts Association (VFAA) Exhibition and Sale, Poetry Art Night.

PAN 2020 PAN is a juried and judged Exhibition and Sale physically on display as of March 18, 2020 at the Suzanne Haskew Arts Center (the SHAC), in Milford, Michigan. PAN entries consist of an artwork and poem inspiring or inspired by the art. The poem can be original or previously published, but must be acknowledged as so. Only original poems are judged. All art entries are juried and judged.

PAN is a vibrant, creative show. It brings out the best in local artists and poets. Unfortunately, at this time, no one will see PAN live at the SHAC. We hope that changes soon! In the meantime… Unusual circumstances and State of Michigan Executive “Stay At Home” Orders allow for creation and sharing in new and exciting ways.

We hope you like and share this catalog! Enjoy the art and their inspired poetry. These are great, Michigan artists. All sizes are WIDTH x LENGTH. Please contact the SHAC for information and sales inquiries. (248) 797-3060

VFAA PAN 2020 Virtual Exhibition & Catalog VFAA 2020 PAN VIRTUAL AWARDS PRESENTATION Hi – I’m Linda Onderko, President of the VFAA, on whose behalf, along with the Milford Public Library, I welcome you to our 28th Annual Poetry Art Night (PAN) celebration, presented virtually for your stay-where-you-are convenience! Of course, we would much rather have held our usual party where we get up-close and personal - sharing hugs and handshakes, greetings and congratulations – gathering at the abundant table, sipping wine and enjoying live music from Luti and Bobby Pennock. But alas we cannot do that. But neither can we let that stop us from innovating! Being the creative sort, the VFAA has successfully adapted this popular event over the years to make sure the show goes on! A lot can happen over 28 years. Whether we’ve needed to weather the weather, to be powerful in outages, or extract any number of monkey wrenches that get thrown into the mix, we have always looked forward to gathering in love and laughter - even at times celebrating through tears. But this time, it’s virtual! Our tireless volunteers were well underway with PAN, even getting as far as hanging the exhibit at the SHAC when all plans changed! They then went the extra mile this year to make sure that even though we are all experiencing unique challenges, this impressive exhibit, pairing art and poetry (and combining music), will still be available for your appreciation. Thank you to our Executive Director, Sue Gollon – the SHAC Coordinator Lish Brown – Candace Brancik who designed the new awards as well as handling a lot of everything else. Thank me too because I did lots of stuff. There are many more volunteers who were essential to this project and we are grateful to each and every one. Yay everyone! We also love our loyal patrons, sponsors, donors and award sponsors who come through each year, ensuring another successful event. The SHAC depends upon the generosity of donations to keep us going. © VFAA 31 March, 2020

VFAA PAN 2020 Virtual Exhibition & Catalog A very special thank you goes to: PAN PATRONS Harold Haskew Muriel & Bob Herrick Main Street Art Lyle & Denise Tyler Barb & Gary Weisenburg PAN SPONSORS Jerry & Karol Breen Dianne Ervin Dale & Sherry Feigley Andrea & Isaac Perry Gloria Schulte Leslie Watson & Barb Moorhead Many of the above donors also sponsor art and poetry awards. They are named again on the awards lists. Thank you all for your generosity! Thank you to all the artists and poets who provide the substance of this exhibit. The silver lining may be that you can sit quietly in the pajamas of your choice, with your preferred beverage, click on the music and enjoy the show at your coziest convenience. Look and read carefully because there is a test at the end. It’s called People’s Choice and you know what to do. I’ve been asked about the JURYING process. Just so you know, we had almost 100 entries this year! Three jurors independently scored each entry. The scores were added together and averaged. The top scoring 75 pieces were then accepted into this exhibit. It was no easy task to decline the rest but space limitations made that a painful necessity.

VFAA PAN 2020 Virtual Exhibition & Catalog LET’S GET POETICAL! April is National Poetry Month – an opportune time for reading and writing poetry inspired by “whatever causes the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings”, as Wordsworth noted. Poetry is the chiseled marble of language; it’s a paint-spattered canvas – but the poet uses words instead of paint and the canvas is you! W. B. Yeats observed “Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry.” AND THE WINNERS ARE! VILLAGE FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION POETRY AWARDS – PAN 2020 Poetry Judge – Jeffrey Hermann – “I had a great time doing this – it was an honor to read the work of so many creative and talented people. Congratulations to all of our poetry award winners. We thank you for sharing your inner quarrels and outer joys, your clever words and touching observations, reminding us of things we may have forgotten we knew and loved. And remember that even Carl Sandburg admitted that “I’ve written some poetry I don’t understand myself”. A POEM TO INTRODUCE THE ART AWARDS! “Art” by Herman Melville In placid hours well pleased we dream of many a brave unbodied scheme. But form to lend, pulsed life create, what unlike things must meet and mate: A flame to melt – a wind to freeze; Sad patience – joyous energies; Humility – yet pride and scorn; Instinct and study; love and hate; Audacity – reverence. These must mate and fuse with Jacob’s mystic heart, to wrestle with the angel – Art. © VFAA 31 March, 2020

VFAA PAN 2020 Virtual Exhibition & Catalog Congratulations and thank you to everyone with a special nod to those who won awards for both their art and their poetry – Candace Brancik, Ken Evans and K. K. Sparks did that! And Sandra Ackerman and her son Daniel Ackerman are a winning combo with three awards between them! Wow! Don’t forget to vote for People’s Choice – one for Art, one for Poetry. We don’t know when we will be back in regular business, but in the meantime, stay safe, stay home, stay sane, stay creative! Share your creations on social media while social distancing. And please remember that the VFAA/ SHAC still needs your support. Artist David Hockney gets the last word: “What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course, art is about sharing. You wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought. I am constantly preoccupied with how to remove distance so that we can all come closer together, so that we can all begin to sense we are the same, we are one.” Thank you… from the VFAA/SHAC

Wherever the Road Takes Us Dan Stuart Photography 28 x 20 $175

Gypsies of the Road By Dan Stuart We’re moving on in the morning, We’ve seen enough of this place. We’ve met some folks, We’ve learned the ropes. We need to find us some space. We’ve climbed the mountains above us, We’ve hiked the deserts below. We’ve seen both seas Hugged giant trees, We’ve learned there’s always more to know. Desert roads run straight and they’re boring Mountain roads curve round and around. But we don’t care, We take the dare. The highway never lets us down. One day we’ll come to our senses, We’ll act our age and stop this stuff. But ‘til that time, Life is sublime. Don’t think we’ll ever have enough. © VFAA 31 March, 2020

Frost

Sandra Ackerman Oil 26 x 20 $400

Frost By Dan Ackerman when all things are brief and endless and you’re eye to eye with distance when frost in the trees is a million little lenses when rivers divide all walls and concertina fences when the big wave and big lense break together as they’ve been ever since when all that shackles is a chain of events when all things are short and unending when all rain is wave descending when the final act stops pretending when the fist-shaped-earth cracks its knuckles, dancing when the answer to all is always the same and is always unconvincing when trees poke through the fencing when river’s ascending

The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner By Randall Jarrell From my mother’s sleep I fell into the State, And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze. Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life, I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters. When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

Child in Awe Donna Thompson Oil 26 x 32 $500

The Incredible Find By Donna Thompson Walking through the woods one day, the sun was shining bright. Right at the edge I came upon, a most incredible sight. The biggest flower I ever saw, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had to go investigate, Its beauty and its size. Its petal soft and seeds of brown. So perfect and, what grace. I stared and smiled so gleefully. Just couldn’t leave this place. Looking up I said hello, it smiled back at me. I thought that I should pick that flower, for mom and dad to see. It swayed and danced against the sky as if to say, you know, The birds the bees the squirrels will feed, upon my seeds… And so, I’ll talk about my incredible find, I left that flower there It’s standing tall against the sky for everyone to share.

Child in the Garden Donna Thompson Oil 28 x 34 $500

Child in the Garden By Donna Thompson Oh child of innocence what is it that you see, A flower growing strong and bright, among the leaves and trees. It started as a tiny seed, growing perfect, so complete. Like this child that I gaze upon, here at this garden seat. Your treasured eyes, see beauty in the petals and its hue. The same is in your hair and skin, the beauty is in you. Let nature’s love embrace you and keep you always safe, Protected in this garden, so peaceful in this place. You are like the poppy, among the rocks and weeds. Guiltless of all conflict, man’s created through his greed. My hope for you is always stay captive at the site, Of flowers in the garden and always see the light.

Nature’s Tapestry Donna Thompson Oil 36 x 24 $350

Tapestry By John Tatar Upon this meadow I ponder, the beauty that I see, As I crouch down beside the earth in perfect harmony. Vibrant are the colors that fill this very land, Who is this artist, I do not understand. How he could give such meaning to every living thing, And make such precious music for every song that’d sing. Reds, greens, and yellow in a wondrous hew, Glisten like diamonds in the morning dew. The scent of every flower to entertain my nose, The coolness of the grass to titillate my toes. The touch of every living thing dance before my eyes, The comfort of the sun so bright in the big blue skies. Who holds the brush, so tenderly, for all of us to see, Who knows what strokes are needed for perfect harmony. Give us the chance to experience life at our first hand, Thank God for our chance to live upon this land.

When Love is Returned By Carol A. Dean I have learned a few things, Along this road. I feel good when the sun is on my face, And my feet are in warm waters. Love can be tragically lost, Or happily found. When Love Is returned, Life is at its finest. I like to kick up a campfire, And watch the reflections on your smiling face. A Heavenly Place Gwendolyn Roth Digital Art 16 x 20 $199

A Heavenly Place By Gwendolyn Roth A golden carpet meanders along, encouraged by a kindly breeze. It urges me towards a friendly light, smiling through the trees. Silken needles drift slowly down, silencing my steps. The feathered hush bestills my heart, and amplifies my breaths. A halcyon hollow bathed in beams beckons me to stay. Sylvan giants whisper lullabies until all gravity lifts away. Sinewy limbs entreat the sun, inviting perpetual grace. I close my eyes and in repose, I dream of a heavenly place.

Lake Muskoka Linda Pelowski Pastel 15 x 20 $500

Infinity By Jaclyn Rink Time is forever here, endless in this space For as long as I can make, my restless mind Rest. Seeking cessation Lain in the arms of their branches The curves of these trails The land that whispers memories Of dreamy, childhood tales. My foot is rooted in the soil Intertwined with the trees Bound to this place, Calling me from far away Flooding my daily reverie. Finding interlude With sounds that soothe my senses Smells that fill my famine And skies that live atop a water line. A lull in life, an intermission in mine Paired with a vessel, set sail for adventure Awaiting in the bay Š VFAA 31 March, 2020

Lazy Days of Summer Linda Pelowski Pastel 14 x 17 $400

Lazy Days of Summer By A. A. Brown We ride winds lift us Pegasus wings free from earthly bounds to glide limitless. But the moments we love the most are grass between our toes, winds tickle goosebumps onto hot skin, ice cube therapy cooling inside-out, their clinks, seed pod rustles, sometimes a soft whinny crash the quiet. And then the moment strikes! we run we hop grass lush on feet, the best of lazy times in frisky prancing fun horsing around.

Snow Clearing Linda Pelowski Pastel 16 x 20 $350

A Gentle Wanderer By Jaclyn Rink Quiet are the toes that step foot on this diamond blanket. Sand’s cousin from the north, gentle, yet protective of the springtime that sleeps underneath. A home to trees’ lost memories of fallen foliage from wardrobes of the period prior. Now clothed in the dense air of a winter’s unveiling. Accessorized in a pale light that teases the slumbering season to come alive, forsaking the beauty of this wintertime. Don’t rush these months. For the earth falls quiet. The world is still. And my traveling foot feels light on these soft plains. © VFAA 31 March, 2020

Catch of the Day Kelly Mellish Pastel 18 x 24 NFS

Catch of the Day By Heather Ann Belkadi As I watch the sun glisten in her hair I try to imprint this moment on my mind Remember her this gentle, this happy, this fair The last days of innocence in my daughter’s time. Barefoot on the dock, sleep still in her eyes I can’t think of tomorrow on a morning like this I don’t think of graduations, marriage or goodbyes I will enjoy each moment, each butterfly kiss She reels with a giggle, a tug and a pull, And with a squeal, she’s landed her biggest fish yet I beam at my angel, my pride burning full And hide my eyes that are suddenly wet She’s too young to know that these moments aren’t endless That Summer’s not the only thing fading away For me, it’s priceless this unfettered togetherness For her, it’s simply the catch of the day.

Nap Time Paul Tibedeau Oil 35 x 44 $1200

Nap Time By Richard K. Morris Bright sun and the steady hum of insects casts a lullaby a sound of summer that soothes. In the cool shade beneath this roof a drowsy state descends upon us friends. Midway along this alfalfa-scented day hours to go before more sweet hay until then, here we stand: drooping lips, misty eyes swishing tails shooing flies. Sunlight and shadow silence and sound Time passes and stands still all at once Contrasts combine in a somnolent blend. It breathes sleep upon us cradles us in this golden hour. Š VFAA 31 March, 2020

But oh, how these seedlings will grow. Remnants of rebirth From the soil of my kin. Just to be cut down Š VFAA 31 March, 2020

Mouse! Geri Ryan-Harden Mixed Media 12 x 15 $75

The Cabinet By Geri Ryan-Harden She locked him in her deepest cabinet and would not let him out though I could hear him thumping when I came downstairs. Sparkling sweet sugar had lured him from his hiding place perhaps not spying a trap pasted with peanut butter, he took a chance and was unexpectedly eye to eye with my mother, (never a good position to be in) as she reached for some sweetener to stir in her tar black coffee. But really, a bicycle lock, for all the world his kryptonite, pushed between door handles and a note too: DON’T OPEN But of course, I had to. Not one but two pinched faces froze inches from mine whiskers twitching ever so slightly “DON’T OPEN THE CABINET” bellowed from above. I named them Sugar and Spice. © VFAA 31 March, 2020

Hills of Gold Geri Ryan-Harden Mixed Media 14 x 17 NFS

Regrets By Geri Ryan-Harden How many days did I forget to look outside my window? Were there birds flying raindrops falling grass greening? Did a child ask me to play to hold his hand or take a walk? Well, did I? I used to hike in the hills skin dry and brown from late summer sun kick away small loose rocks and hear the scatter. When did the earth began to spin so fast I had to hold on tight my eyes squeezed shut?

Engram 9: fire and water Marissa Cook Artist Book 4x4x2 NFS

Engram 9: fire and water By Marissa Cook I act like I am two people a shining silent reflection, arm on the shoulder of a red tongue one crashing endlessly at walls of their own construction and one drinking ice from a glass of water calmly watching ashy words splinter into smoke as they hit the open air. Must we swirl around the other never mixing dying dwindling at a lukewarm glance? Or have I turned to vapor every consequent clash and never noticed as I floated the sole solution after all the only path had ever been up I was burning. Š VFAA 31 March, 2020

Swans Marsh Spring 2019 Kenneth Evans Digital 30 x 24 NFS

Swan Ethics By Kenneth Evans This is a scene of domestic tranquility, Away from the bounds of raucous civility. That’s just on the surface, and what should disturb us: They’re unwanted immigrants, Definitely contaminants, Replacing the natives, Disturbing conservatives, Threatening the weak, And those who are meek, Uprooting the weeds, And other misdeeds. But then they are beautiful, Noble, aesthetical, Enhancing the landscape, Improving my mindscape. That the natives are suffering is definitely true. And that begs the question of what should we do. This question it seems to me is quite moot. © VFAA 31 March, 2020

Shadows racing ‘round tables and chairs… pandemonium… Then silence as the clock ticked seconds away… Said the mouse, “I know your game!” Said the cat, “Come out and play!”

Coming Warmth Tamera Menard Ovall Oil 20 x 20 $375

Coming Warmth By Jan D. Lamb The early winds of Spring are cold, and chill you to the bone. But none will be as chilling as ice that turns your feet to stone. Now as the sun pours out of a blue sky, leaving warmth in its beautiful wake. Trees are budding and songbirds sing, bringing joy for all to take. To suer such a winter, yet keep faith for Spring inside, makes one feel there must be hope as the Seasons begin to collide. The ache inside from the long cold, melts with the coming Spring. All is well within my soul, as new life begins to take wing.

Ode to Tom Thompson Dan Persinger Oil 15 x 13 $300

Ode to Tom Thompson By Dan Persinger Tom Thompson 1877-1917 Group of 7 Pine trees erect and tall some have already taken the fall As majestic as they stand they are no match for the destruction of man Your skies are ablaze with color gone wild There are shades of a heavenly prism that stretches for miles You are the master of the Canadian canvas Your paintings will endure for years to come What a shame you had to leave so young

Family Silhouette Nancy Ebert Ink & Watercolor on Vellum 11 x 9 NFS

Family Silhouette By Nancy Ebert I directed the grandkids to stand in a row Head-to-head and toe-to-toe. There are mysteries inside each body and head, Objects, patterns, blended colors that spread. Bricks and squiggles, and lines with direction A carousel horse and spherical section, Happiness abounding, joy going viral, Big butterfly and a parabolic spiral. Equations and paisley, T-Rex poised to bite A brain and an eye, Frog and Toad with a kite. A plethora of frogs, favorites of mine A moon and a rocket, a sun with its shine.

I LOVE MY FAMILY goes over my head Surrounding a heart that I colored in red. The insides of a watch, a USA map An alien and singing frog with his cap. The words to a game that we all love to play When Mr. Frog croaks “Midnight” everyone runs away. Graffiti LOVE and more drawn with glee: It’s a family silhouette of the grandkids and me. © VFAA 31 March, 2020

A Season of Reflection K. K. Sparks Photography 14 x 17 $150

A Season of Reflection By K. K. Sparks A quiet night among the stones, no footfalls here, just leaves and bones Rota Fortunae spinning ‘round claiming remnants to the ground Deciphered this repeating game? All riddles, lessons, secrets plain? Flew and sailed and walked the world but when my banner I unfurled, Ashen gray on either side, Faded words, once full of pride

Torchbearers of a New Age K. K. Sparks Photography 16 x 18 $150

Torchbearers of a New Age By K. K. Sparks We pronounce ourselves Prometheus, the torchbearers of a new age, stealing fire from the gods But does the mirror show only his brother Epimetheus, the after-thinker, who gave no gift to man? Who has time to argue? The world will spin as it will. The young must be free to strut and fret their hour upon this stage before they are heard no more In the end, Wisdom will always wait in the hour of long shadows, smiling to herself throughout the ages

Last Light Dale Alcocer Oil 12 x 9 $150

Blue Winter By Robert Francis Winter uses all the blues there are. One shade of blue for water, one for ice, Another blue for shadows over snow. The clear or cloudy sky uses blue twiceBoth different blues. And hills row after row Are colored blue according to how far. You know the blue jay’s double-blur device Shows best when there are no green leaves to show. And Sirius is a winterbluegreen star.

Flowers in a Vase By Matthew Holloway A bunch of flowers Sat in a vase Colourful and lonely A mind looks at them Wondering What is it they have to say Are they a thank you Or a gift of love Are they an apology Or given in remorse Perhaps they are for nothing Given to bring a smile The mind looks on Wondering for a while The flowers sit in their vase Unmoved by thought Or the reason given to them A little water at their base To keep them fresh for a while They are the end of the day Just flowers in a vase (previously published) Š VFAA 31 March, 2020

Life in Water Madhavi Kovuru Acrylic 7X5 $85

Saltwater Waltz By Hannah Perry His petite nose smushed against the thick glass, doe-eyes peering in with a captivated curiosity. A myriad of fish glided through the water, a painter’s pallet come to life. Two clownfish circled each other, a saltwater waltz. His hands, creating sticky fingerprints from the lollipop earlier, longed to break through and swim with them. Shirt pulling from the tugs of his brother failed at getting him to budge, too enamored by the world that was so separate from his own, but still one and the same. Š VFAA 31 March, 2020

Rainbow Sue Wright Photography 18 x 15 $57.99

If I Could Catch a Rainbow By Pamela Joyce Randolph If I could catch a rainbow, I would catch one just for you, and share with you the beauty, of the light so pure and true. If I could build a mountain, that you could call your own, I would build for you a mountain top, where you could be alone. If I could take away your troubles, and toss them in the sea, I would take all troubles from you, and place them all on me. But I cannot catch a rainbow, or build mountains in the air, but know that I will always be, A friend who’s always there.
