Norman Vincent Peale’s quote “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” seems appropriate for this issue of Cordillera Ranch Living. Thanks to the career efforts of folks like Ginger and Toby Barnes (along with past cover couple Karen and Richard Jackson), reaching for the moon (and beyond) became routine… at least they made it look that way to the rest of us. Now, the concept of space tourism doesn’t seem so far reaching with private companies outlining plans to deliver various forms of commercial spaceflight in the not-too-distant future. How fun it is that we live among these rock(et) stars! But that’s what makes Cordillera Ranch so special. Robin Scheel, Ron Bodin, Robert Browning Three-and-a-half years ago, Robin Scheel, Robert Browning and Ron Bodin began working together as the site preparation and land clearing team for Cordillera Ranch. Ron was a newcomer to the Ranch, Robert had been working on parts of the Ranch with Cordillera and a prior employer for 12 years, and Robin had been here since Day 1 of the development. They quickly became known as 3R Construction (pronounced Triple R), enjoying a sense of respect and camaraderie as they worked together on projects. Their varied skill sets and knowledge complement each other. They also share Christian faith and values that not only enrich their daily work relationship but have extended to their friendship off the Ranch as well. “I am privileged to have these exceptional men of character in my life,” shares Robin. For the three, the feeling is mutual. Though their official role focuses on tree clearing and site preparation for new phases of homesites in Cordillera Ranch, men with such hard work ethic and skill sets often find themselves taking on other projects as well. Dave Grinnan, Project Manager for DH Investments (DHI), the developer of Cordillera Ranch, describes the trio as the SWAT Team for any issues that need to be addressed around the Ranch and explains the progression of 3R, “It is an honor to tell you a little about these guys. We jokingly
22 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021
called them 3R Construction for the first letter in each of their names (they made me the Chairman because they say I never get out of my chair!). It quickly evolved into hats with their own logo (3R) as well as rain gear and even street cones with the familiar 3R brand on them. They joke that they only want the jobs others say can’t be done. They can operate heavy machinery and are knowledgeable in civil construction, electrical, utility repair…right down to hanging a picture frame and just about anything in between. Their craftsmanship and pride in their work is second to none. Their main job, however, is to carve out lots here at Cordillera. They are excellent tree guys. They clear the land and sculpt the views. They have a trained eye to make a lot special. If there is a view or a way to improve a lot, they will find it.” If you’ve bought property in Cordillera Ranch in recent years, it’s likely that one or all of these guys helped prepare that lot and likely improved the view or some feature of it, well before you saw it. “It is very satisfying to be the ones to first break ground on an undeveloped area and cut in where the future streets will be and then start cutting into the lots,” says Ron. Robert adds, “We enjoy working with Dave Grinnan and Chris Espinoza at the DHI office. They coordinate the projects, Dave points us in a direction, and 3R takes off to get it done.”
But it involves more than a skid steer. Their main mission is to take a raw piece of property and clear it just enough to highlight the accent points of each lot. As the 3Rs explain, they begin with clearing an entrance into the lot that makes sense given the topography of the land. Next, they clear a building envelope that gives a prospective buyer an idea of the ideal building site for a home. They consider any long-range views the property might have to add value to the lot, and clear around nice hardwoods to show off any heritage oaks the lot might contain. “In doing this, we also try and preserve the privacy factor from one lot to the next. When I look at a lot from the start, I think about what would I do with it if it was mine,” says Robert, continuing, “We work with the sales team to highlight the best-selling points of a lot and still maintain the Cordillera Ranch look.” Just as they each have an innate sense of the land, they also work intuitively as a team. With Robin in charge of the bulldozer, Robert and Ron can anticipate his every need, and they communicate through a series of hand signals that Ron jokingly says, “even my wife doesn’t understand me!” Robert laughs, “It’s like landing a 747!” “I’ve enjoyed seeing these great men grow in their work together over the last few years,” says Charlie Hill, President of Cordillera Ranch, who works closely with the 3R team in laying out upcoming phases of homesites. “Their attention to detail and passion for their craft is very evident if you spend any time with them; they’re artists with large machinery and their work is instrumental in our ability to deliver the finest homesites in the Hill Country — and part of their success is absolutely attributable to their tight relationship and the fact they have such fun together and don’t take themselves too seriously, but they take their work seriously,” adds Hill. 3R also works on a wide range of projects that come up around the Ranch in addition to site clearing. Robert says, “Robin, with his knowledge of the Ranch and experience, allows us to tackle any emergencies that arise.” In fact, when those emergencies arise, everyone knows the 3R secret code is “Rubber Chicken”—their 911 alert that keeps things light but in a serious way. They joke that their “bat signal” is coming soon! Some of these emergencies have included rescuing property owners stuck in the mud at their undeveloped lots to replacing mainlines on the golf course. “Robin knows this property like the back of his hand, and he can excavate precisely, knowing exactly where the line is,” says Ron. “Robin gets called in for the special details,” adds Robert. You see, Robin is so familiar with the natural and built landscape of the property because his career at Cordillera Ranch began before there even was a Cordillera Ranch. After starting a construction company with his father and brother, he worked for the development’s original landowners, Carla and Mac Northington, on their ranch before they decided to develop it. This transitioned into his job with DHI and he has been involved ever since. Robin’s talent lies in his understanding of what an uncleared piece
Robin Scheel of land can look like. In the early years, Robin cut in the first units of Cordillera Ranch, which included site work, paving and septic systems. He has built many trails, berms and other improvements on the Ranch. He was also involved in the boulder placement for the Champions Gallery at the Clubhouse. Mac Northington reflected on his long connection to Robin, “Robin and I have been friends since the late 60s on the old Elmax Ranch. I have never met a man with so much integrity and kindness. His work ethic is beyond compare. He is truly a jack of all trades and a master of most of them.” Robin grew up in Boerne and has been married to his wife, Layne, for 52 years. They have a daughter named Lorin. Robert came to Cordillera Ranch as a contractor before joining DHI nine years ago. He is married to his wife, Stacey, and together they have five kids: Macie, Holley, Scott, Allison and Brandon. Robert has a background in wildlife management and enjoys hunting, fishing and projects with his kids. If you are familiar with Boerne’s Parade of Lights each December, then you have surely seen The Browning’s home, which Robert credits Stacey for and is always a highlight on the tour. Ron joined Cordillera Ranch in June of 2018, after a 30-year insurance career at USAA. He’s an accomplished woodworker, building custom furniture in his spare time, along with welding, playing acoustic guitar and riding his horses with his wife, Lori. They have a daughter named Alex. Ron sums up this group beautifully, “I am honored to be a part of Triple R. We can count on each other both on the clock and off. We are always there for each other. I appreciate these great friends. Cordillera Ranch is a wonderful place to work and I appreciate this opportunity.”

And while this might sound like a description of a pair of 20-somethings in Austin, it also accurately describes a pair of very interesting retirees in Cordillera Ranch, Ginger and Toby Barnes. Ginger’s career was marked with an unusual beginning and many twists and turns. While at Vanderbilt University and then the University of Alabama in Huntsville, she explored majors in math, science, English and French before pivoting to a concentration in Business, majoring in Accounting. After two semesters in Accounting, she received an offer from her first professor. He had moved to The Boeing Company, and Boeing was moving new programs to Huntsville. While she hadn’t graduated yet, she considered the opportunity. She would have to give up two scholarships and return to school part-time, making graduation take at least another year. Ginger calls the advice she received from her counselor one of the first pivotal points in her career. He said, “TAKE THE JOB!” and reminded her that Boeing would pay for her education. Ginger’s first position at Boeing was Cost Analyst in Financial Controls for Military Maintenance Training Equipment, which she says provided a solid and deep foundation of the manufacturing accounting of the business. She made her way through the ranks, finished her degree, and a few years later, Ginger moved

into Program Planning and Control, a position that she loved at Boeing. Approaching her 30s, she decided to pursue her MBA at Vanderbilt. To put things in perspective, Ginger laughs, “Personal computers were just coming available when I started the program, and I was excited to buy a $2,000 laptop that only weighed 27 pounds for my tenure at Vanderbilt!” After graduation, Ginger changed programs to become the International Contracts Manager for Space Station Freedom, where she worked with NASA and International Space Agencies to build the incredible vehicle. She augmented her French studies with Italian and Japanese language programs, making traveling easier and gaining credibility with international participants. She also studied Russian “for fun,” a move that would serve her well. As the Cold War was ending, President Clinton invited the Russians to join the Space Station Program. NASA and all participants came together to design the “new” Space Station, and the nucleus of the program moved to Houston. Ginger was at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta flying her balloon
“Overdew” when she received a call to go to Houston for the next week. That “week” lasted seven years! Ginger was promoted to Program Manager for the first American-Russian element launch, the FGB, which launched in 1998. But her promotion did not come without rebuffs from peers who considered only engineers capable of the position. The Russians, however, always treated her with great respect, and in many cases, more respect than their U.S. counterparts. “The Russians had brilliant women who were engineers, accountants, physicists, etc. The difference was, they would never put them in a position of leadership,” says Ginger. Ginger has countless stories about pioneering business with the Russians and one of her favorites includes their 7-year-old son John. Toby and Ginger coached an Odyssey of the Mind team for boys and one of the tasks was to build a bridge with specific dimensions using 35 grams of balsa wood. At least twice yearly, the Russians and Americans held technical interchange meetings, alternating locations. On one occasion when the Russians were in Houston, Ginger invited a team of Russian engineers over to her garage one Saturday to work with the boys on their project. The Russians spoke little English while the boys spoke no Russian, but it was a magical experience watching the Russian engineers work with the boys to learn design, load dynamics, hand-offs between Engineering and Manufacturing and vice versa, and develop a winning design! The team won locally and went to regionals and, more importantly, had a unique opportunity to share a cultural experience. Ginger retired in 2015 from her 34-year career at The Boeing Company as Vice President of the Space Launch System Program and United Space Alliance as President and CEO. She was responsible for the last five shuttle launches, as well as the retirement of the Space Shuttle Program for NASA. She calls herself a retired rocket scientist, although her career spanned many “products” in addition to the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle and the Space Launch System. Ginger led programs and businesses in weapons, fighters, logistics and army modernization. Toby received his degree in Technology Management from Athens State University in Athens, AL, and also worked at Boeing in Technology Management, Configuration and Change Management. But his passion was always in the garden. He was born into a family of green thumbs. “My family owned greenhouses and nurseries in Alabama so I worked with the family business for a long time before going to Boeing,” he shares. “My experience growing up in the gardening business is the origin of many of my interests today,” he says. The couple’s residential garden space consists of two acres heavily focused on native plants that are selected for their ability to

support the wildlife. “It was interesting, in terms of the garden, to move to a climate we haven’t experienced before. I have really enjoyed learning about all of the plants that are needed to support the wildlife here,” he says. “Our garden is full of hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.” He works in his garden daily, a perfect example of the old saying, “The best fertilizer is the gardener’s shadow.” Ginger is an enthusiastic equestrian student. The Barnes have two palomino quarter horses, Goldie (11) and Sunshine (7), currently housed at the Cordillera Ranch Equestrian Center. The newest addition to their herd is a show horse, “Pursuing the Dream” (3), aka “Mel.” Having horses and riding is a retirement dream come true for Ginger, and well-tolerated by Toby. Under the artful tutelage of the Equestrian Manager, Susie Phillips, and trainers Meghan Moriarty and Taylor Stone, Ginger has learned what she calls “the right way” to ride. Now, life in Cordillera Ranch gives the two sweethearts — originally blind dates at Ginger’s high school prom, then married after Ginger’s sophomore year in college — ample opportunity to explore their interests beyond gardening and riding. “Our requirements for this home were pretty simple,” jokes Ginger: “1) close to our son in Katy, TX, 2) acreage to accommodate a horse, 3) a studio large enough to house my longarm quilting machine, 4) remote yet close enough to the airport, fabric stores, LIVE MUSIC and medical facilities, and 5) a good area to walk dogs. This dream home met all our requirements and more.” It also has a name: The Rocket B Ranch (for Ginger) and The Rock It B Ranch (for Toby)! Toby, a self-taught guitar player, especially appreciated the proximity to Luckenbach, one of the many places they like to visit with friends. They also very much appreciate options very

close to home. “While we were familiar with the amenities of Cordillera Ranch, both within and outside the Clubs, we really learned the value of the community within the Ranch. We have made fast friends at Wine Socials, met great folks walking dogs and enjoy Guadalupe River kayaking and tubing. We are grateful that we have joined an inclusive neighborhood where people embrace having fun and caring for each other. The community we didn’t expect has been a great surprise!” says Toby. Last April, the pair was thrilled to host their son John’s wedding to Nikki Barnes, a STEM educator at a middle school in Houston. Remember the freeze and snow last February? Their beautiful gardens took a huge hit, but the Barnes and a wonderful contractor, Green Space, transformed the space to its former glory just in time for the nuptials. Their son is also a craftsman — a gunsmith by trade and the VP of Operations for Briley Manufacturing. The couple, who were married in the front yard under a copse of old live oak trees, visits Boerne frequently for skeet shoots and Hill Country exploration. Other family members include three rescue dogs and a cat that Ginger inherited from her father-in-law: “Krash Helmet (14) aka the matriarch, Trip (8) aka Porcupine Survivor, and Stitch (2) not of Disney fame…of
the quilting kind. And our home is ruled by one recalcitrant cat, Lord Greystokes (>17),” says Ginger. Ginger continues to actively mentor and advocate for young women in science and engineering. “I am passionate about education and space,” she says. One of the boards she serves on is for AstraFemina, an organization of female scientists, astronauts, engineers and industry leaders who endeavor to open girls’ minds to the possibility of a STEM career. She has also served on a number of not-for-profit boards including the St. Louis Arts & Education Board, the St. Louis University Executive Advisory Board, the Maryville University Board of Trustees, the Challenger Center Board and the Industry Advisory Board of The University of Alabama College of Engineering. “The life we lead at Cordillera Ranch is an interesting yet different pace from our 30+ year careers in the aerospace industry. We are excited, though, to see the world and hopefully someday, spend some time babysitting a grandchild,” Ginger says with a smile.

CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF GREAT GOLF AND FRIENDLY RIVALRY
The annual Cordillera Cup is our take on the Ryder Cup, and much like the Ryder Cup, the results have been a little lop-sided since its inception in 2007. The Cordillera Cup is a battle between Team Hill (captained by David Hill) and Team Northington (captained by Mac Northington). David and Mac have been buddies for over 50 years as they were fraternity brothers at the University of Texas. In the late 90s, they went into business together here at Cordillera Ranch. Most great clubs have some sort of Ryder Cup competition — sometimes it’s one half of the locker room against the other, odd member numbers vs even member numbers, or where I grew up, it was juniors vs seniors. For us, Hill vs Northington fit the bill. It’s a friendly competition with nothing on the line other Mac Northington and David Hill than bragging rights — but to those who compete, the bragging rights are priceless. New Club members are randomly assigned to a team and returning players stay on the team they’ve played for in the past. All in all, the Cordillera Cup is a weekend event full of spirited camaraderie, great food, serious golf, not-so-serious wagering and perhaps a prank or two. The 2021 Cordillera Cup was played on October 2 and 3 with 96 members competing on two 48-person teams. In the 14 years leading up to this year’s event, Team Northington had a commanding lead (11-3), but there’s been a shift in the trend as Team Hill won last year and managed to back it up with another victory this year. The record now stands at 11-4. “Let’s really keep the spotlight focused on the last four years… it’s 3-1 Hill team during that span!” quipped Charlie Hill, co-captain of Team Hill. It was a close race on Day 1 as Team Northington took an early lead of 9.5 to 14.5 in the best ball competition and Team Hill battled back in the afternoon alternate-shot match to leave Team Northington a 1-point lead going into singles matches on Sunday. The low handicappers traded blows as Team Hill and Team Northington split the first 12 matches, then Team Northington won a few but Team Hill came strong through the middle of the pack by winning 11 out of the next 13 matches. Team Hill clinched the victory by blowing out Team Northington in the singles matches with a point tally of 29.5 to 18.5. This was a win to remember for Team Hill as it was their first back-to-back win in cup history and Team Northington will be reminded of it every time they walk past the Champions Gallery.

LADIES’ CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP The 2021 Ladies Club Championship was played on September 15 and 16 with 21 competitors battling for their name on the coveted ‘rock’ in the Champions Gallery. On the net side, it turned into a two-lady race between Diane Pfeiffer and Karen Jackson. Karen fired a net 67 in the first round to take a one-shot lead over Diane and Tammy Hogarth. The second round presented challenges for Tammy but she hung in there for a 3rd place finish. By the turn, Diane had taken a 2-shot lead over Karen but that all changed on #12 — Karen picked up 4 shots with a net 5 to Diane’s net 9. Diane would turn around and net birdie the next hole to Karen’s net bogey. They finished the tournament in a tie for 1st place at 3-under par but the scorecard playoff went to Diane since she had the lowest second round score. On the gross side, it was also looking like a two-lady race after the first round. Sue Bielstein shot 81 in the first round and the 2020 Ladies’ Club Champion, Yana Dommert, was sitting in 2nd place with 83. After 9-holes in the second round, Sue increased her lead to 3 shots and kept the peddle down through the back. In the meantime, Maria Sayers was having a nice bounce back after a first round 93 — she fired a second round 82 to make the race for second tight. Coming up the 18th fairway, Sue basically had the tournament locked up, but to cap off the victory, she buried a 20-footer down the hill for birdie to secure a 10-shot victory and her first Ladies’ Club Championship. MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP The 2021 Men’s Club Championship was played on September 17-19. We started with 10 men in the Championship Flight (3 rounds) and 16 men in the Net Flight (2 rounds). On the net side, TJ Johnson came out hot with a net 65 — for the record, this was TJ’s first round before 11:00am in over two years. Brian Werner was sitting in 2nd place after the first day with a net 71. Day 2 wasn’t as enjoyable for TJ as he was brought back down to reality with a net 82. On the flip side, Brian didn’t waver and backed up his good first round with a great second round of net 69 to capture the net title. Steve ‘Steady’ Wade finished second with net rounds of 73-71. Scott Weisberg and David Cottrell finished T-3 with the scorecard playoff going to Scott as he shot net 72 in the second round. On the gross side, the men were facing a tough test that greatly separated the field over three rounds. Rawley Vines came out strong with a 77 in the first round to take the lead by one over Bart Wilson and two over the 2016 Men’s Club Champion, Ron Trevino. The 3-time Men’s Club Champion, Phillip ‘Flipper’ Earnest, opened with a front-nine 48 and closed with a back-nine 36 leaving him 7 shots out of the lead. Day 2 was moving day and Bart moved his way to the top of the leaderboard with a nice round of 75 giving him an 8-shot lead over Rawley and a 9-shot lead over Phillip and Ron. With a steep hill to climb for the rest of the field, Bart sprinted out of the gates with a 34 on the front-nine to increase his lead to a blistering 14-shots. By the time the final group landed on #18 tee box, Bart had increased his lead to 16-shots. He made a simple par to capture his first Men’s Club Championship. Phillip finished in 2nd and Rawley finished in 3rd.

NET CHIX The Cordillera Ranch Tennis Club is offering Net Chix this fall. Net Chix is not a new program but has been absent for a couple of years. With more members playing tennis, along with an influx of new members, the Tennis Club decided to bring this program back. Net Chix is a program for our lady members, designed to serve a variety of purposes. The program can be for members who have never played tennis but are interested in learning the game. It is great for members who used to play but have not played for a while — some might have played when they were younger but stopped for a variety of reasons like their career path, raising kids or perhaps an injury that sidelined them for some time. It can also serve the member who simply wants a weekly workout or is looking for a basic evaluation of their tennis skills. Net Chix meets Friday mornings and the program consists of basic stroke production and technique combined with cardio drills, with a progression to point and match play. You can sign up through the Club’s website or by contacting the Director of Tennis or Tennis staff.

As you can see, our ladies’ tennis is busy this fall. Approximately 40-50 members participate in tennis programming at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch and as the community grows, so does interest in the Tennis Club. This programming includes but is not limited to private lessons, clinics, USTA league teams, ball machine and open play.
UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION (USTA) Our Tennis Club boasts two USTA Ladies’ teams competing at two different levels on two different days of the week. These teams compete through the San Antonio Tennis Association (SATA), which is the local branch of the USTA. The Cordillera Ranch Aces are a 2.5 level ladies’ team — 2.5 is the entry level for USTA team tennis in San Antonio and the surrounding area. The 10-lady member roster has a 10-week season in the fall and a 10-week spring season. The Aces have been together four seasons and continue to build and improve their roster. The team plays on Friday mornings, and practice on
BOCO BALLBUSTERS
Mondays and Thursdays. Their matches consist of one singles match and two doubles matches, and they compete against Fair Oaks Country Club, The Clubs at Sonterra and San Antonio Country Club, to name a few. The Aces have made great strides over the past few seasons and will compete well this fall. If you are interested in playing competitive tennis in a team format, this is a great place to start. The Cordillera Ranch BOCO Ballbusters are an age 40 and over, 3.0 level ladies’ team with a roster of 16-18 members, and they continue to add new members and strengthen the depth of talent on the team. The Ballbusters season also consists of
10 weeks against various clubs and tennis facilities in the San Antonio area, with matches on Thursday mornings. The team practices on Tuesdays, and several team members participate in open clinics and take private lessons to improve their tennis skills and strategy. In The HOLIDAY SPIRIT(S)! It’s that time of year again when we come together with our loved ones to spend quality time and continue our cherished family traditions. We would like to share our personal, favorite holiday beverages for you to enjoy this season. By Graham House, Clubhouse and Lodging Manager, and Ryan Walters, Dining Room and Bar Manager
KENTUCKY BOURBON EGGNOG From Graham House The best parts of growing up in Kentucky are the Derby and bourbon. During the holiday season, snow would blanket the miles of horse farms as we drove to Aunt Tommie’s home. As kids we loved to go to her home and sneak handfuls of bourbon balls and cups of bourbon eggnog. Oh yes, we paid for that feast! Years later I acquired her recipe, and this continues to be our holiday tradition. Making eggnog the old-fashioned way takes a while but always tastes better than buying a carton. Ingredients 12 Large eggs 1 quart Milk 1 cup Superfine or powdered sugar, divided 1 tbsp Real vanilla extract 2 cups Heavy cream 3 cups Ancient Age (Now Buffalo Trace) Semi-sweet chocolate shavings and nutmeg Method • Separate 12 large eggs into 2 medium-sized bowls. Put the egg whites in the refrigerator (you’ll use them during the final step). • In a large saucepan, stir together 1 quart of milk, 1/2 cup of superfine or powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of real vanilla extract. Bring to a gentle boil, then take it off the burner. • Beat the egg yolks for 2-3 minutes to thicken them. Take a cup of the hot milk and pour it slowly into the egg yolks, whisking constantly. Then pour this mixture back into the saucepan with the rest of the hot milk, continuing to whisk it so it thickens smoothly. • Return the saucepan to the burner and cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes, using a wooden spoon to stir it constantly. You’ll know it’s ready when the eggnog is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon. • Pour the mixture into a sealable container. If you like, you can cover the surface of the eggnog with plastic wrap so it doesn’t form a skin. Refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours). • With an electric mixer, beat the egg whites until soft, white peaks form. Slowly add 1/4 cup of powdered sugar and

continue mixing until the peaks stiffen. Then rinse the mixer blades and whip 2 cups of heavy cream until it thickens, adding another 1/4 cup of powdered sugar as you do. • Pour your chilled eggnog mixture into a large punch bowl. Slowly stir in 3 cups of Buffalo Trace bourbon. With a spatula, fold in (don’t stir) the whipped cream and then the egg white mixture. Put it back in the fridge to chill for at least an hour. Keep chilled until just before serving. Garnish with semi-sweet chocolate shavings and nutmeg as the final touch.
SANTA’S MILK From Ryan Walters We all grew up being told that if we left milk and cookies out for Santa on Christmas Eve, he would eat them. That’s where the inspiration for this drink came from. I thought, if I were Santa, what would I want to have waiting for me when I came down the chimney? Santa’s Milk of course! Ingredients 2 oz Vodka 1 oz Baileys 1/2 oz Vanilla syrup 1/2 oz Heavy cream Rainbow Sprinkles Cinnamon Sticks Method • Coat the rim of a rocks glass with simple syrup (equal parts of sugar and water). • Roll the rim of the glass in the Rainbow Sprinkles. • Fill the glass with ice. • Add the first four ingredients and stir. • Garnish with a cinnamon stick and enjoy! Warning! Santa may not leave if left out for him.

Ingredients 1/2 Orange, halved 4 Cloves 3 cups Apple cider 2 Cinnamon sticks Brandy, to taste 1 cup Heavy cream, whipped to soft peaks Method • Stud the orange halves with cloves • In a medium sauce pan, bring the cider, cinnamon and orange to a simmer • Ladle in the hot cider and add brandy to taste • Top with a dollop of whipped cream

This week I got a ping on my phone from a friend doing battle with some ongoing low back pain. After consulting with a physician and completing physical therapy, my friend was advised to incorporate more “glute and core” exercises into workouts. Being a resourceful person, my friend googled “glute exercises” then forwarded a link to me with these words:“need to work on isolating my glutes, what do you think about these exercises?” My brain immediately and automatically shifted into teacher mode. I had only one thought: Isolate? Please don’t let your glutes work out alone! As a Pilates instructor and a human who has surpassed the half way point in her life, I know that isolating one muscle to create strength comes at a cost. Without help from another muscle group, things can and will go very wrong. I also know that my friend’s mission to strengthen the glutes was well intended. It was the idea of solely focusing on one very specific area without regard to another that raised my concern. Many years ago, when I first started my own Pilates practice, I was struck by how different my body felt moving in a Pilates class versus how it felt in my usual group classes. The biggest difference in my Pilates class was that every single exercise called upon my body to shift what part of me was moving and what part stayed stable — with a very strong emphasis on the stability part. I had no idea how incorporating both mobility and stability in every single move would change how I work out, how I ski, how I hike mountains with my family and how I move through life. In fact, it is safe to say that before I was introduced to Pilates, I had very little awareness of mobility and stability and how that pertains to my body as an entire movement system. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “united” as 1. made
one; combined, 2. relating to or produced by joint action, 3. being in agreement; harmonious. Thank you, dictionary people. I cannot think of a better adjective to describe the perfect Pilates workout. It is the body working in a united state — using both mobility and stability in each exercise, providing an effective and efficient workout. Pilates is a whole-body exercise program. We don’t just emphasize one body part. We address the entire system and how it works together for optimal benefits and better movement! What does that mean? In the context of movement, let’s break it down with a general definition of mobility and stability. Skeletal muscle tissues can hold things together or move parts relative to each other; both parts are equally important. Mobility refers to the ability of a joint to move freely through a certain range of motion without restriction from the surrounding tissues. The stability aspect refers to the ability to recruit the muscles around the joint in order to prevent movement. It is the constant shift between the two that helps us to gain strength and prevent injury. Both are equally important! Many of the most common injuries and complaints that I see and hear begin with problems in assigning the right muscle to the right job. An example of how the synergistic body parts work together is walking. Ideally, the large glute muscles are used along with their connectors from the pelvis to the hip to push the leg forward (mobilizing) as it lifts off the ground while keeping your spine upright (stabilizing.) Pro tip: if you’re shuffling your feet when you are walking, please wake up your glutes and tell them to get to work. Still unsure if your muscles are doing their job correctly? Let’s meet! In a one-hour Pilates session, you will move through a series of exercises created to highlight both mobility AND stability. We know that systems work best in unison; our bodies are no exception. The human body is designed to move, and efficient movement involves numerous muscles and joints working together simultaneously. Limitations in either of these areas leads to compensation somewhere in the system creating faulty movement patterns and increased risk of injury. This is a very common occurrence and happens to most people at some point in their life (myself included!). If you’ve already experienced an injury, don’t worry. Once you’ve been given clearance to exercise, Pilates will meet you where you are. With the right guidance, consistency and commitment, new and healthier movement patterns can be created. Pilates is here for that and I am, too. I can’t promise you six pack abs or that doing “these four glute exercises will erase your back pain!” And in the continued interest of full disclosure, I am known to lose track of counting repetitions. But I can promise that I will be tracking your form and movement. That is my priority. I can also promise that in Pilates, we will work together in a united effort to improve the way you move. The Advantages of Float Fishing Trips By Shane Reynolds, Outdoor Recreation Director & Outfitter
Fishing float trips, either fly or conventional, offer many advantages to both novice and expert anglers. While wade fishing a river or stream is a pleasant way to spend a few hours stalking trout or bass, a float trip down a river gives fishermen opportunities that can’t be matched from shore. For the last thirty years as a guide, I have spent countless hours fishing with clients and I believe float fishing is often the best way to maximize the potential of catching more fish. It’s also a peaceful and easy way to fish.
COVERING WATER The biggest advantage of a float trip is simply the fact that drifting down remote water allows anglers to put their flies and tackle over more trout and bass than is ever possible while wading. Rather than casting to the same fish over and over, from a raft, every new riffle, undercut bank and bend in the river creates new possibilities with trout that are often unreachable by anglers who are limited by walking or by rivers that are too deep to cross safely. Anglers who do enjoy wading are able to get out of the boat to thoroughly fish prime areas that rarely see other wade fishermen. Dry fly fishing and streamer fishing generally require wading anglers to stay on the move to look for new fish, but from a boat, each cast puts your dry fly or streamer into new territory.
FISHING PRODUCTIVE BANK WATER Wading anglers are often standing where the fish would prefer to be feeding. Banks offer both security and food for trout and bass. Grasshoppers, ants, frogs and insects commonly fall into the water near the bank and the fish look for them there, sometimes holding mere inches from shore. From a boat, these productive holding areas can be fished easily without spooking the fish.
MOBILITY ISSUES Some fishermen just have trouble wading safely. Older anglers and young children can be challenged when dealing with moving water and slick rocks. Even experienced anglers can have trouble wading in high, fast currents. Float fishing trips eliminate the risk of trying to negotiate rushing water,

over “greased bowling balls,” logjams and other wading hazards. Anglers can comfortably fish while standing or sitting in a raft and relax to take breaks to enjoy the scenery if they get tired. Often, it isn’t even necessary to wear waders, which makes for a more comfortable day when the mercury rises on summer afternoons.
TECHNICAL ADVANTAGES Fishing from a raft also allows the guide to give his anglers a better shot at catching more and bigger fish. From an elevated position above the water, fly casting is made easier. In addition to casting, mending, setting the hook and spotting fish are all easier from the higher location anglers fish from in a raft. Longer “drag free” drifts can be achieved while the boat drifts with the flies. In the event a truly large, trophy-sized fish is hooked, playing the fish is easier from the boat. The guide is also able to follow the fish should it decide to go on a long run downstream. Rising trout can be approached from upstream. The first thing they see is the fly drifting towards them. This increases the percentage of hookups and decreases the chance of spooking fish.
CARRYING GEAR AND PEOPLE All wade fishermen must carry what they may need on their backs. In a boat, lunch and drinks are kept cold in a cooler. Cameras can be stowed in dry storage, and extra rods can be brought along in the boat. Additionally, two anglers can fish from the same boat. It’s nice to have a buddy to converse with throughout the day. It’s also great to have someone to snap photos of your trophy fish.
WHAT TO BRING Generally, our outfitter staff will have you covered for flies, gear and water, but bring your own equipment if you prefer. As mentioned earlier, waders are often optional. A buff face and neck guard is an excellent way to avoid a sunburn. The technical fabric breathes and beats the sun coming from above and reflecting off the water. A lanyard for tippet, clippers, hemostats and floatant is handy. Don’t forget raingear, polarized sunglasses and sunscreen.
Wading is a great way to get close to the fish and immerse yourself in the environment bass and trout call home. However, it is hard to beat a day of floating down a beautiful river like the Guadalupe, San Marcos, Llano or Devils. All while your outfitter staff rows and offers instruction. The scenery and wildlife alone are worth a float. However, you will cover more water and cast to more trout and bass than is possible on any wade fishing trip.
FISHING TRIPS The outfitter service at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch focuses on a few bodies of water for our fresh water float trips. The trout season on the lower Guadalupe River in Satler runs from November through April. On that particular trip, we are fishing the tailrace below Canyon Lake for stocked Rainbow and Brown trout, stocked by Trout Unlimited and the State of Texas. On the upper Guadalupe in and around Cordillera Ranch, we
are targeting warm water species such as the Guadalupe bass, various species of sunfish and even carp. On the San Marcos and Llano Rivers, we also target warm water species such as largemouth bass, Guadalupe bass, various sunfish and cichlid, as well as carp. On our favorite river, the Devils, which flows into Lake Amistad north of Del Rio, we are targeting smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, gar and carp. Mr. Ellis, a former Air Force pilot and POW, is the author of Leading with Honor: Leadership Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton, in which he details the lessons he learned during his sixty-four months of captivity in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Citing the exemplary leaders he served under who inspired courage through the most horrific circumstances, he relates his experiences to the principles of leadership that we can all apply to our everyday lives. In his book, he states, “In the Hanoi Hilton I learned that leading with honor is about doing the right thing, even when it entails personal sacrifice.”

With roots in the development and building industry, Chris Hill, President and CEO of Meritum Energy Holdings, entered the propane, fuel and lubricant distribution business in 2010 and has compiled an extensive network of operations that service both residential and commercial markets. Operating as Pico Propane and Fuels in the southern U.S., their territory covers everything south of IH-10 from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Beaumont, Texas. “In addition to Pico, Meritum has operations along the east coast from New England to Florida. As a locally based company, we also have the benefits of a much larger scale, which allows us to provide reliability and access to the products we sell that are advantageous to a larger company. CABANA AND KITCHEN EXPANSION AND RENOVATION The many members that have been part of the Club since the early days when the Cabana was the only Clubhouse dining facility — before the Main Clubhouse was built — remember how fun it was to hang out with friends at the Cabana and enjoy a nice meal as the sun set beyond the pool area. As the years have gone by and the Main Clubhouse dining room and Twin Sisters Bar became the main dining venues, the Cabana transitioned to primarily serving as a special events venue. It’s now time to bring it back to life as a regular dining and bar option — albeit with a major makeover and expansion. Though concept planning for the Cabana’s renovation has been under consideration for the past couple years, the plans were expedited this year when the freeze burst pipes in the facility and destroyed it completely — making it unusable even for special events. We have spent the past six months planning a complete renovation, repurposing and expansion of the Cabana that also ties into an expansion of the main kitchen so the facilities will be fully connected, which is critical for quality food service to the new Cabana. There are many other moving parts to the plans and, suffice it to say, this is far more than just a renovation of the Cabana and thus more complex to design. The renovation and expansion of the Cabana is going to provide us stunning new dining outlets and make use of one of the most prime spots on the Clubhouse hilltop. Not only will these plans upgrade and expand your Club dining and bar options, but they will allow for the Cabana to be put into use as a year-round, day-to-day dining facility (with a complete make-over, expansion and modernization of the space). We

wanted a venue that is large enough to host large gatherings but still have an intimate feel and vibe for nightly dining. We’re also very excited to showcase some new outdoor patio dining space around the Cabana and north of the current Pool snack bar, which will provide another breathtaking dining spot for Members to regularly enjoy. Additionally, the planning for the Cabana expansion spurred the culinary team to evaluate long-term kitchen-area needs and it became clear that if we were ever going to expand the kitchen, it had to be done at the same time as the Cabana expansion. In order to continue to deliver great dining experiences to numerous different dining venues from one kitchen, it became apparent that a kitchen expansion was a must. So, the current kitchen will nearly double in size (expanding to the west towards the Pool snack bar), and we’ll be adding much-needed storage space for various Club operations. This expansion will allow the Main Clubhouse to fully connect to the existing snack bar and expanded Cabana. Additionally, the snack bar will be getting some repurposing and renovation as well. We are working as fast as possible to get plans completed so we can move into the construction phase over the winter months and get as much completed prior to summer pool season; however, we do anticipate that some of the work will be ongoing at the Cabana during the next pool season. It is likely a 12–15-month project overall, so the anticipated Cabana opening would be end of 2022 or early 2023 (hopefully the current materials supply-chain constraints aren’t a major delay).
MAIN CLUBHOUSE AND GOLF SHOP UPGRADES Separate from the Cabana work, in the Main Clubhouse this winter we will be replacing the carpet and wood flooring that was damaged during the winter storm. We’ll also be giving a

face-lift to the main restrooms in the Clubhouse near Twin Sisters. Once again, Covid has delayed the time-table for this work as manufacturers have significant backlog; however, we are now on track to have the re-carpeting and other work done by February of 2022. The carpet removal and replacement in the main dining room is anticipated to take approximately a week; during that week the main dining room would be closed and we would operate from the Twin Sisters bar dining area. Then the Twin Sisters and hallway reflooring work would be completed and the main dining room would be open for service while Twin Sisters is out of operation for a week. We understand that disruptions are not ideal but in order to make these upgrades, it’s necessary and we’ve worked with the contractor to make sure we have as minimal disruption as possible. Also, you’ve probably seen some of the improvements that have been under way in the Golf Shop. The first project in the Golf Shop back office is now complete, which removed walls and built-in desks to provide more work space and inventory storage which will allow the staff to better serve Members with the growing amount of special orders. In November, we will be upgrading the Golf Shop main floor area by creating more merchandising area, re-carpeting and removing the existing counter and installing a new counter near the entry door. These changes will give the Golf Shop a beautiful facelift and most importantly create significantly more usable merchandising area to offer more choices and venture deeper into lifestyle categories. As you can see, we have been planning numerous projects and capital improvements which will greatly enhance Member experience at the Club.
