✃ Transforming Churches

“Encounters on the Edge has been a great inspiration to my ministry. I found that they helped me to think through what it means to shape church from the mission context rather than from my previous church experiences. Without the ministry of The Sheffield Centre, I wonder whether I would have had the courage to try planting a cell church in a rural multi-parish benefice... so I really thank God for their work.” Revd Sally Gaze Team Rector in the Tas Valley Benefice, Norwich Diocese “Few people in the UK have as much awareness of our mission context and how church comes into being as George Lings. The Sheffield Centre is a unique resource for all those who want to understand what’s going on and to respond more fully to the great opportunities that God is opening up for all of us in the life of our church and country. I have the greatest confidence in the work and expertise of the Centre, and am more than happy to commend it to your prayers and support.”

Prayer and Support

We value those who pray for us. We believe your prayers assist us to spot, report and interpret the missionary creativity we see. It also influences the climate of acceptance with the wider church that our team enjoys. Our work is making an impact in churches across the UK and in the lives of those who live within those communities. Will you support our work and regularly pray for us, and pray that the church becomes truly shaped by mission? All of Church Army’s ministries, including The Sheffield Centre, need financial support. Will you commit to this vital research work by making a regular gift to Church Army?

Seeing and sharing

The Sheffield Centre is a research team whose role is to discover, develop and communicate our findings to Church Army and the wider Church in the following areas: • Fresh expressions of church and church planting • Evangelism to post-Christian culture • Evangelism to different generations We do this through our relationships with pioneers, through speaking, and publications such as the Encounters on the Edge and Discovering Faith in Later

Life series. Also through updates on our website, like the Research Bulletin. I believe God’s call to us is to pass on the seeds of the future; these tiny signs, often at the edge of the church, are the best hope for re-imagining the whole Church in following the mission of Jesus.

Listening & Connecting

There’s no research without stories. We’re all about helping people to reflect upon their experiences, to learn from that and share it with other people. We are always looking for what we don’t yet know, visiting people in places where we hear God’s mission in Christ is moving forward in fresh ways. We listen to them to help us understand how these ventures work, in the UK and beyond, exploring the dynamics behind the activity or adventure. Our job is to find out how these ideas and projects work, shaping theories to make sense of what we see and hear. We test these theories with further examples that emerge, and so adding to a theological understanding of the Church and Mission today.

Sharing what we find

We speak across the UK and around the world about our research findings, and those of others, in relation to planting fresh expressions and evangelistic engagement with today’s cultures. We communicate our findings in Encounters on the Edge. This is a series researching fresh expressions of church and different ways people are engaging in Christian community with non-Christians. We also write books, sometimes with others, and produce publications online to make training in today’s mission more widely available. Our hope in all of this is to fertilise the imagination of the Church to continue in creative response to the missionary initiatives of the Spirit of Jesus.

The Team

We choose to be accountable to each other for a healthy balance in our lives, also deciding together which invitations to take up and what research to undertake. Together we nurture our calling to watch, observe, question and comment. Watch a short film about us at: www.churcharmy.org.uk/ sheffieldcentre
